Alfred “Al” Swenson

May 8, 2012

Alfred “Al” Swenson, age 91, of Osage, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the Faith Home in Osage. 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, May 7, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with Father Jack McClure, CPPS, officiating. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, with military honors at the grave by the Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation was from 4-8:00 p.m., on Sunday, at the Sacred Heart Gymnasium in Osage, with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 4:30 p.m. Visitation continued in the gymnasium one hour prior to the funeral mass on Monday. The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa or the Osage Education Foundation for scholarships.

Alfred Oliver Swenson, was born on January 3, 1921 in Calmar, Iowa, to Adolph and Molla (Njus) Swenson. He attended country school near Lawler and graduated in 1942 from the New Hampton High School. Al enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served his country during World War II as a B-26 bomber pilot. He married Virginia Farrell on August 19, 1946 in Iowa City. Al graduated from the University of Iowa in 1949 with a Master’s Degree. He then taught social studies at Brooklyn, Iowa, until 1955 when they moved to Osage. He was the principal at the Osage High School until his retirement in 1983. Al also was principal at the Sacred Heart School from 1990 until 1994.

He was active in school, church and community activities. Al enjoyed golf, playing cards, reading, gardening, visiting, music and dancing. He dearly loved his grandchildren.

Al is survived by his wife, Virginia Swenson of Osage; his children, Kris (Ron) Markham of New Hampton and Molly (Patrick) Gould of Middleton, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Jared (Mindy) Markham of New Hampton, Liz Markham of New Hampton, Anna Gould of Washington, DC and Pat (Jenny) Gould of Valencia, California; great–grandchildren, Sidney, Madison and Griffin; brothers, Carl Swenson of St. Francis, Kansas, Don (Lorraine) Swenson of Alta Vista and Joe (Barbara) Swenson of Pecos, Texas; sister-in-law, Bernice Swenson of Columbia, Missouri; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Harold.

The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, was in charge of the arrangements.



Gale E. Cook

May 8, 2012

Gale E. Cook, age 89, of Osage and formerly of Manly, died on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Urbana Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by the Walter J. Meycoks American Legion Post #264 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. There will be no visitation, according to his wishes.

Gale was born to Vernon and Pearl Cook, on June 11, 1922 in Vinton, Iowa. The family moved to Manly and then later to Charles City where he graduated from high school. He joined the Army Air Corps in October 1942 and was discharged in May 1946, after serving in India and Burma. Gale was united in marriage to Norma L. Hepker on August 9, 1947. Gale was recalled to active duty in October 1950, serving in Japan, the Philippines, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Illinois, and California, retiring in August 1969. After the military, he worked for Procter & Gamble in California and retired in 1984. Gale and Norma moved to the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, living there ten years before returning to Iowa. Norma died on March 27, 1996.

Gale married Beverly Metzger in November 1997, and she died in March 2002. He then married Nova Kobernusz in July, 2003. They had recently moved to the Apple Valley Assisted Living in Osage.

Gale was a life member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Gale is survived by his wife, Nova Cook of Osage; daughter, Carol (Kenneth) Patterson of Lafayette, Indiana; 3 step-daughters, Gloria (Alan) Ganshert of Osage, Racinda (Cindy) Metzger of Howell, New Jersey and Ranita (Ron) Derocher of Westfield, Iowa; three grandchildren, Scott (Toni), Brett (Heather) and Krista Minton (Troy); three step-grandchildren, Cassie, Cory and Ryan; and eight great-grandchildren, Christian, Tyler, Isaak, Ashlyn, Andrew, Luke, Dylan and Amelia.

The Phillips Funeral Homes in Vinton, is in charge of the arrangements.



Harold "Tub" Miller

May 22, 2012

Harold "Tub" Melvin Miller, age 70, of Leland, died on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

A memorial mass will be held at the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City, on Friday, June 29, at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

Harold Miller was born on April 8, 1942, to Wilbur and Vera (O’Donnell) Miller. He attended high school in Osage and served three years n the Navy. Harold worked at various jobs throughout the years including Bell Telephone, Ford manufacturing, Winnebago Industries, assistant manger at the bowling alley, and drove a limo in Chicago. He recently delivered the Sunday Des Moines Register and had a candy machine route.

Harold enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping, old cars, old 50s/60s and country music, and playing softball. For the last 28 years he enjoyed being with his special friend, Jan Blankenship, playing penny cribbage, gambling, gardening, watching birds and traveling to the gulf in their motorhome. Harold had a great love of dogs and growing roses.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur Miller; and step-daughter, Susie Storgaard.

He is survived by his mother, Vera (Miller) Ross of St. Ansgar; brother, Duane Miller of Boaz, Alabama; sister, Annette Bryan of Florida; daughter, Maria (Joseph) Sgarbossa of Illinois; sons, Harold (Laurie) Britt Jr. of Florida and Michael (Gina) Britt of Illinois; step-son, Dean Storgaard of St. Ansgar; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a special friend of 28 years, Jan Blankenship of Leland and her children, Leslie Grothe, Todd (Joni) Blankenship and Robin (David) Peterson and their children and grandchildren.



Johnny William Palmer

May 22, 2012

Johnny Palmer, passed away at his home on Friday, May 18, 2012, at the age of 73.

Funeral services were held at the St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, Minnesota, on Tuesday, May 22, at 10:30 a.m., with Fr. James Seitz officiating. The organist was Patty LeClaire. The song leader was Allen Palmer. The pallbearers were David Wagner, David Schreier, Bruce Haken, Branch Haken, John Risacher and Joe Risacher. Interment was in the St. Ann’s Cemetery, Slayton. The Totzke Funeral Home of Slayton was entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial may be directed to Our House Hospice of Slayton or to the Murray County Relay for Life.

Johnny was born on June 13, 1938 in Osage, Iowa, to James and Zelma Green Palmer. He grew up in New Haven, Iowa and attended the St. Mary’s High School in New Haven. At a young age Johnny began working with his father in the hog buying business helping to manage their buying stations in New Haven and Elma. They also operated Palmer Trucking. On July 22, 1961, he and Betty Chambers were married at the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma, Iowa. In 1962, the family moved to Tracy, Minnesota and Johnny worked for Armour’s. In 1963, he was transferred to Armour’s in Worthington and he also worked for Markman and Ausham Trucking of Worthington. In 1976, he began managing the hog buy station in Slayton and in 1978 they moved to Slayton. Johnny retired in 2004. Following his retirement Johnny worked for the State of Minnesota as a state livestock weigher at the plant in Worthington.

Johnny loved farming. Every spring and fall you would find him out in the field-driving tractor for area farmers. He enjoyed all sports especially his St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes. Johnny played baseball for many years and when he felt he was to old to play he then started umpiring and did that for 27 years. He instilled the love of the game in his children and at one time Johnny, Melissa, Tim, Scott, and Kevin were all umpires. He was a member of the St. Ann’s Church in Slayton and served as song leader for many years. Johnny enjoyed fishing especially his yearly trip to Canada. This was something Johnny loved to share with his family taking his dad, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a special nephew over the years.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Palmer of Slayton, Minnesota; five children, Melissa Curry of Slayton, Tim Palmer and his wife, Teresa of Verdigris, Oklahoma, Scott Palmer of Brewster, Minnesota, Melody Palmer-Arizola of Austin, Texas and Kevin Palmer and his wife, Carrie of Worthington, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and three on the way; five brothers and sisters, Beverly Bryan of Galesville, Wisconsin, Patricia Schweiger of Dodge Center, Minnesota, Paul Palmer and his wife, Cindy of Phoenix, Arizona, Jerome Palmer of Greeley, Colorado and Charlene Samolewicz and her husband, John of Reading, Pennsylvania; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Bennett and her husband, Marlowe of Rochester, Minnesota and Karen Oster-Chambers of Federal Way, Washington; one brother-in-law, John Chambers of Wausaukee, Wisconsin; and several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Anna Chambers; son-in-law, Brian Curry; brothers-in-law, Tom Chambers, Paul Laufle, Frank Bryan, Clayton Schweiger; sister-in-law, Sharon Chambers; and one nephew, Craig Schweiger.

Dale Beyer

May 22, 2012

Dale William Beyer, age 74, of Charles City and formerly of the Mitchell area, died on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, May 25, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with Pastor Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10-11:00 a.m., on Friday, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

Dale was born on November 11, 1937 in Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of George and Elfrieda (Hackbarth) Beyer. He graduated from the Mitchell High School. Dale married Shirley Hutzell in 1959. In his early years, he worked as a caretaker at the Osage Cemetery. Dale was a big fan of Elvis Presley and enjoyed Christmas. He had a lot of love for his family and will be greatly missed.

Dale is survived by two daughters, Candace Beyer of St. Peter, Minnesota and Kim (Craig) Reed of Fairmont, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Blake Engelby, Dustin Schwebke and Kristina Smith; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dennis (Judy) Beyer of Fredericksburg, Dean (Anola) Beyer of Mitchell and George (Kris) Beyer of Mitchell; and two sisters, Dallas (Glen) Heinzerling of Osage and Delores Hucke of Ottertail, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Todd Beyer and Robin Engelby; one sister, Dorothy Clayton; and three brothers, Delbert, Darrell and Donald Beyer.

Edward Charles Moore

May 29, 2012

Edward Moore, age 58, of Riceville, passed away at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville, on Saturday, May 26, 2012.

Funeral services will be held at the Riceville United Methodist Church, at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 30. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery in Osage, with military honors conducted by the Roy Gue Post #244 of the American Legion.

Ed was born on March 10, 1954 in Osage, Iowa, to Charles and Millie (Randall) Moore. He attended local schools graduating from the Riceville High School. After graduation he attended John Deere training as a mechanic. Ed served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a big fan of auto racing and was active in the Riceville American Legion.

Survivors include two daughters, Denise (Scott) Hockens and their children, John Ellis and Amanda of Osage and Jolene (Drew) Newman and their daughter, Harmony of Knoxville, Tennessee; his father, Chuck Moore and Neva Whitmore of Osage; a sister, Barbara (Marvin) Voight of Osage; three nieces and their families; many aunts and uncles; and best friend, Marshall Korte of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; and his mother, Millie in 2002.

Robert E. Stueve

May 29, 2012

Robert E. Stueve, 74, of St. Ansgar, died on Saturday, May 27, 2012, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, after a ten week battle with brain cancer.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, May 30, at 2:00 p.m., at the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, with Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery. The Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar, is in charge of the arrangements.

Bob was born in rural Missouri Valley, Iowa on December 27, 1937, to Roland and Eva (Porter) Stueve. He attended school in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Bob was united in marriage to Patricia A. Phelps on February 23, 1958 in Emmetsburg. To this union three children were born. Bob enjoyed being a meat cutter for 48 years. He cut meat in Iowa, Minnesota and California. He owned and operated meat processing lockers in St. Ansgar, Joice, Ackley and Thompson, all in Iowa. After his “2 day” retirement, he took the position of head of the Mitchell County Transit Bus Service. He put on many miles for 10 years. Bob made numerous friends along the way. He will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pat of St. Ansgar; daughters, Cheryl and husband, Martin Lemmon of St. Ansgar and Jill Kroneman of St. Ansgar; son, Dave Stueve of LaPorte City, Iowa; grandchildren, Carson Coordes and Cooper and Sam Randall.

Bernice Reding

June 5, 2012

Bernice Reding, 85, of Stacyville, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2012.

A Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, June 4, at the Visitation Church in Stacyville. Visitation was on Sunday, from 4:30-7:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and also one hour prior to the services at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Visitation Church or to the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Bernice, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Juenger) Mullenbach, was born on December 26, 1926 in Johnsburg, Minnesota. She graduated from the Adams High School and worked as an office manager for JC Penney. Bernice was united in marriage to Melvin Reding on November 23, 1950. They operated a store in Watkins, Iowa, until 1954. They then farmed near Stacyville until 1980.

She enjoyed the company of and visiting with family and friends, as well as playing cards, gardening, fishing and quilting. She was an active member of the Visitation Christian Mothers, Lady Foresters and Catholic Aid Society.

Bernice is survived by her husband, Melvin Reding of Stacyville; five children, JoAnn (Albert) Farnham Jr. of Rochester, Minnesota, Douglas (Janet Crossley) Reding of Marshfield, Wisconsin, Jan (Dan) Moretz of Hanlontown, Richard (Gloria) Reding of Stacyville and Robert (Linda) Reding of Fort Madison; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leon (Johnnetta) Mullenbach of Red Wing, Minnesota and Nathan (Dorothy) Mullenbach of Adams, Minnesota; and three sisters-in-law, Johanna Mullenbach of Adams, Minnesota, Dorothy Mullenbach of Rochester, Minnesota and Helen Mullenbach of Adams, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Edmond, Erwin and Roman; and twin sister, Beatrice.

Dennis Frederick Barenz

June 5, 2012

Dennis Frederick Barenz, 63, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2012. 

A celebration of Dennis's Life will be held on Tuesday, June 12, at 1:00 p.m., at the Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Osage. Burial will immediately follow in the Osage Cemetery.

Dennis was born on August 9, 1948 in Osage, Iowa, the son of Clinton and Fern (Streich) Barenz. He proudly served in the United States Army. He was a barber in Iowa Falls for a period of time. He then became an Iowa Highway Patrol pilot and dispatcher for many years. He then became a postal carrier in his sleepy little Iowa hometown of Osage for many years. But that wasn't good enough for him and he went back to school and became a paramedic as a 2nd profession. He retired from the post office a few years ago and moved Brenton and him to Fort Myers, Florida. He was currently active with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and was so proud of this accomplishment.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his mother, Fern; 2 children, Brenton and Nicole; his granddaughter, Alana; sister, Jan; and partner, Patty Morris of Las Vegas; brother, James and wife, Michiyo and daughter, Jennifer of Osage. His family also includes, Merlyn and Sue Thorson of St. Ansgar and their children, and Jerry and Kay Thorson of Waverly and their children.

He was preceded in passing by his father, Clinton; and brother, Thomas.

We will never forget Dennis and his "Sunday Morning Cinnamon Rolls! A special thank you to all of his loving friends in Fort Myers and Osage who are standing by our family through this very emotional time. A very special thank you to Pam and Dennis Friskey, as I could not have done this without you.
