July 5, 2012
Corliss “Corky” Sherman Estergren, 87, of Minneapolis,
Minnesota died on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at the
Minnesota Veterans Home, Minneapolis.
A memorial service
will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, July 9, at the
First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, Minnesota. The
Reverend John Holt will officiate. Interment will be in
the Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation with his family will
be one hour prior to the services. Military honors will
be accorded by the Albert Lea Veteran’s Organization.
Corky was born on
December 1, 1924 in Gordonsville, Minnesota, to Carl and
Hanna (Utabjaa) Estergren. He resided in Gordonsville
and moved to Albert Lea when he was 4, where he attended
high school. After graduation he enlisted in the Navy
where he proudly served from 1943-1946. After discharge
from the service, he moved to Minneapolis where he
attended the Dunwoody Institute for drafting and
estimating and graduated on October 14, 1949. After
taking a job in Osage, he met his wife, Catherine
Lonergan and they were married on June 8, 1957. The two
settled down in Albert Lea in 1964 and resided there
until Corky moved to the Vets home in 2009. He worked
for lumberyards the majority of his life, managing Home
Lumber in Albert Lea. After a fire in 1974, he rebuilt
Home and Farm Lumber where he was a co-owner/manager.
Corky was past
president of the Lumberman’s Association, life member of
the American Legion, member of the Elks, Moose Club and
Falcons Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed fishing, gardening,
motorcycles and car racing. He was a well respected
businessman and a hard worker.
Corky is survived by
his wife, Catherine “Cathy” Estergren of Chaska;
daughter, Cherie Bartz and her husband, Randy of
Shakopee, Minnesota; son, Craig Estergren and his wife,
Julie of Milton, Wisconsin; grandsons, Matthew Bartz and
Gareth Estergren; sister, Helen Weigel of Albert Lea;
brother-in-law, Robert (Jean) Lonergan; sisters-in-law,
Grace Lonergan, Bettylou Lonergan and Laura Lonergan;
and many nieces and nephews.
Corky was preceded in
death by his parents; brothers, Aronld (Monetta)
Estergren and Vernon (Mary) Estergren; brothers-in-law,
Francis Weigel, Roland Lonergan, Kenneth Lonergan and
Dale Lonergan; sister-in-law, Pauline Whalen; 1 niece;
and several nephews.

DeVere Roman Hemann
July 10, 2012
DeVere Roman Hemann, 78, of Keokuk, Iowa, passed away on
Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at the Montrose Health Center.
Visitation was at DeJong-Greaves
at 1212 Concert Street, on Sunday, July 8, from 5-7:00 p.m.
and the funeral was on Monday, at 10:00 a.m., at the All
Saints Parish, Keokuk, with Father Lathrop officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Lee County Hospice or to the
Keokuk Catholic Schools.
He was born on July 10,
1933, to Joseph Hemann and Rosetta Mauer Hemann of McIntyre,
Iowa. He attended school in Meyer. DeVere served in the U.S.
Army from February 1954-February 1957. He married Margaret
Murray on June 30, 1962 in Washington, D.C. DeVere managed hog
farms for almost 30 years, the last being Jerry Grauf’s,
Elvaston, Illinois, prior to his retirement. He also worked
for Cargill.
He was a member of All
Saints Parish, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Knight,
former Grand Knight and District Director. Before DeVere’s
health declined, he loved to spend time with his family,
play cribbage and watch westerns.
DeVere
and Margaret had six children, Kathy (Lowell) Wigant, Cindy
Shank, Theresa (Paul) Sestito, Peggy (Charles) Brooke, Steve
(Theresa) Hemann and Robert (Dana) Hemann. He is also
survived by 18 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, a
sister, Mary Margaret (Gary) Tebben, sister-in-law, Shirley
Hemann and several cousins.
He was preceded in death
by his wife, Margaret; daughter, Mary Hemann; brother,
Charles; two sisters and his parents.

Roger Dean Wilder
July 10, 2012
Roger Dean Wilder, 79, of St. Ansgar, died on Monday, July
9, 2012, at his home.
Funeral services will be
held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, July 12, at the First
Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, with Pastor Paul Weeg
officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 11, from 5–7:00 p.m.
and one hour before the services.
Roger was born on January
21, 1933, to Andrew (Jack) and Elmira (Smith) Wilder. Roger
attended school at Otranto. He was united in marriage to
Barbara Jean Kittleson on June 6, 1954, at the First
Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. The couple had five children.
Roger worked as a mechanic for L.R. Falk for many years. His
lawns and garden were his pride and joy. He spent countless
hours on his lawn mower. He was a volunteer fireman for many
years.
Roger is survived by his
wife, Barb; three daughters, Nancy (Randy) Hackenmiller,
Linda (John Harl) Hatten and Becky (Mike) Dobson; one son,
Kent Wilder; six grandchildren, Molly Hackenmiller, Joe
(Maria) Hackenmiller, Jason Hatten, Brittnae Canfield,
Nathan Dobson and Alton Dobson; five great-grandchildren,
Kimberly, Kenya, Joey Hackenmiller and Danny, Lily Hatten;
two sisters, Jeanne (Butch) Neuman and Joan (Steve) Braun;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Jack and Elmira Wilder; four brothers,
Doyle, Laurel, Marly, Donnie Wilder; and son, Kevin Wilder.

Mary Ann (Lehman) Wagner
July 24, 2012
Mary Ann (Lehman) Wagner, age 82, died peacefully on Monday,
July 9, 2012, at the Evergreen Terrace, with family at her
side.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m.,
on Monday, August 6, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Grand
Rapids. Relatives and friends are welcome.
She was born on December 15, 1929 in
Montgomery, Minnesota. Mary Ann graduated from the
Montgomery High School and attended Wartburg College,
Waverly. She took Home Economics classes and earned her
teaching qualifications in 1949, and taught 3rd Grade at the
Orchard Consolidated School, Orchard.
Mary Ann has lived the last seven years in
Grand Rapids. Mary Ann was an active member of the Zion
Lutheran Church. During her life, she volunteered as a 4-H
Leader and Cub Scout Leader. Mary Ann was a Home Extension
Member and was active in Parent Teachers Organizations. Mary
Ann loved teaching Bible Studies, writing, painting,
knitting, sewing and many other crafts. Her favorite past
times were reading and interacting with her children and
grandchildren. She also enjoyed laughter and time spent with
the Knit Wits.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her
parents, Mary and William Lehman; and her brothers, Carl and
William Lehman.
Survivors include her husband, Robert A.
Wagner of Grand Rapids; children, Reverend Robert (Kathleen)
Wagner of Copperas Cove, Texas, Caryl (Frank) Dahn of Lake
Milles, Mary (William) Schnell of Grand Rapids, Minnesota,
Richard (Sara) Wagner of Burnsville, Minnesota and Elizabeth
(John) Simmer of St. Paul; grandchildren, Robert Wagner,
LeAnn and Rebecca Dahn, Johanna and Laura Schnell, Jessica,
Daniel and Grace Wagner, Eli and Lian Simmer.
Memorial contributions are welcome to Hospice
and/or the Zion Lutheran Church. The family would like to

Joan Kuhn Guest, of Washington, D.C., passed away
peacefully on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, surrounded by
her family.
Visitations were held
at The Shrine of The Most Blessed Sacrament, Washington,
D.C., on Sunday, July 15, from 7-9:00 p.m. and on
Monday, July 16, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The funeral
mass followed at 11:00 a.m., with a reception
immediately afterward. Interment will take place in the
Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
Servants of Mary, 7400 Military Avenue, Omaha, NE 68134.
Joan was born on
August 29, 1924 in Osage, Iowa, the daughter of
Sylvester and Elizabeth (Sullivan) Kuhn, longtime
residents of Mitchell County.
She was the devoted
and loving wife of the late RADM Frank B. Guest Jr. USN;
cherished mother of CAPT Frank B. (Linda) Guest III USN
(Ret), Richard M. (Christine Butler) Guest, Robert H.
(Gloria Caprio) Guest, James B. (Stacy) Guest, Ellen L.
(Alan) Nothwehr, Stephen R. (Karen) Guest, Joan G.
(Robert) Allen and the late Sr. Marcia Guest OSM; adored
grandmother of 19; great-grandmother of four; dear
sister of seven; and godmother of four.

Dorothy M.
Nieman
July 17, 2012
Dorothy Margaret Martha Nieman, 95, of St. Ansgar, Iowa,
passed away on Friday, July 13, of cancer at her
daughter’s home with her family.
Funeral services were
held on Tuesday, July 17, at the First Lutheran Church,
St. Ansgar, at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. Paul Weeg
officiating. Burial was in the First Lutheran Cemetery,
St. Ansgar. The Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home of St.
Ansgar, was in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy was born on
August 27, 1916 in St. Ansgar Iowa, the daughter of
Walter C. and Hedwig (Hattie) A. (Feldt) Gutman. She was
the oldest of nine children and learned to help her
mother early on with cooking, baking and raising the
children. Dorothy was five years old when her family
moved to a farm West of Randall, Minnesota. She married
Harry Herman Nieman on July 17, 1935 at St. Cloud,
Minnesota. They lived on the Otto Nieman farm West of
Little Falls, Minnesota for nine years, then moved to
Britt, Iowa for ten years and then moved to Wells,
Minnesota for two years before moving back to St. Ansgar
in June 1956.
After working out of
the home, she started a greenhouse at her home in the
1970’s since Harry was in poor health. Harry passed away
on June 16, 1975. Her family helped with much of the
work in the greenhouse. And her grandchildren learned
much about growing plants. She sold the greenhouse to
Joyce (her granddaughter) and Tom Crowley on August 29,
1992.
Dorothy retired to a
new home on the South side of St. Ansgar. Here she
crocheted and sewed making doilies, Afghans, and many
quilts for family members and the church. Dorothy
enjoyed having the great-grandchildren come over to
visit, learn to cook and bake. They then would play
games and enjoy the treats that they made. Dorothy
enjoyed having friends and family over to visit making
wonderful diners the family will long remember. She also
enjoyed travelling to visit family from Alaska to
Florida.
Dorothy is survived by
her children, Yvonne Krumm of St. Ansgar and Harry Otto
(Dorothy Jean) of Mapleview, Minnesota; grandchildren,
Donald Krumm of Ocala, Florida, Debra (James) Nelson of
Rosecreek, Minnesota, Joyce (Thomas) Crowley of St.
Ansgar and Pastor Diane Krumm of Mayville, North Dakota;
great-grandchildren, Kristina (Steven) Morische of
Dayton, Maine, Lacey Crowley of Speicher, Germany, Shawn
Crowley of Fairborn, Ohio; two sisters, Delores Mooney
of Baltimore, Maryland and Elaine Little of Punta Gorda,
Florida; one brother, Myron Gutman of Fairbanks, Alaska;
sisters-in-law, Geraldine Barney of Tucson, Arizona and
Frances Gutman of Fairbanks Alaska; brothers-in-law,
Duane Miller of Long Prairie, Minnesota and Jim Lillemo
of Isandi, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband, Harry Herman; three
brothers, Walter, Willard and Donald; two sisters,
Margaret Miller and Marilyn Lillemo; sister-in-law,
Laurene Gutman; niece, Beverly Rae Regnell; and
son-in-law, Clarence Krumm.

Clarice Vance
July 31, 2012
Clarice Arlene (Anderson) Vance, passed away in the home of
her daughter in Iowa City, Iowa, on Wednesday, July 18,
2012, surrounded by her daughters and granddaughter. She was
under the care of the Iowa City Hospice.
Memorial services are
planned for Friday, September 28, 2012, at the Our Savior’s
Lutheran Church in Osage, Iowa.
Clarice was a resident of
Iowa City for ten years. She enjoyed memberships in three
bridge groups and was a devout member of the Our Redeemer
Lutheran Church. She was quoted as saying recently that she
was “a good Norwegian Lutheran.” Her family nods yes to
that! Clarice was born on October 26, 1922, the second of
four children to Gilbert and Stella (Odden) Anderson on a
farm in rural Osage. She married William “Bill” Vance of
Osage in 1946, had 5 children, and lived in many cities
managing home, family and career.
Clarice had a passion for
painting. Landscapes and flowers were her favorite subjects.
In her later years, she included greeting cards in her
repertoire using watercolors to paint the birds and flowers
she new well from the feeder and gardens outside her window.
Clarice was also known for her cookies, especially her
ginger snap cookies. Children and grandchildren looked
forward to receiving special packages of cookies at holidays
and birthdays.
Clarice is survived by her
daughters, Cynthia A. Hanson of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Jody
M. Gates of Iowa City, Lori J. (Tom) Raife of Iowa City and
Jana K. (Ryan Murphy) Vance of Fairfax, California; son,
Mark (Mary Kay) Vance of Shoreview, Minnesota; nine
grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and brother, Gerald
W. (Karen) Anderson of Boone.

Robert Frank
Miller
July 24, 2012
Robert Frank Miller, 78, of St. Ansgar, died on Friday,
July 20, 2012, at his home in St. Ansgar.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday,
July 24, at 11:00 a.m., at the Immanuel Lutheran Church,
St. Ansgar, with Rev. Dr. Byron Northwick officiating.
Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St.
Ansgar. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday morning,
after 10:00 a.m., at the church. The Schroeder & Sites
Funeral Home of St. Ansgar, is in charge of the
arrangements.
Robert F. Miller, born on January 8,
1934, to Sanford and Jennie (Van Werven) Miller in
Chicago Illinois. His mother passed away when Robert was
18 months old and his father later married Helen Cramer.
Robert knew Helen as his mother and had a very close
relationship. Robert has one sister, Sandra (Earl)
Barnes of Phoenix, Arizona. Robert married Nancy A.
Huber on October 5, 1957. Robert and Nancy together
raised three children, Robert M. Miller of Stacyville,
Lisa A. Haskins of St. Ansgar and Jennifer L Metz of
Crystal, Minnesota. Robert and Nancy greatly enjoy three
grandchildren, Keith Haskins of Marion North Carolina,
Kendall Haskins of Visalia, California and Cathy Haskins
of St. Ansgar. Robert and Nancy also have four
great-grandchildren, Seth, Mason, Abby and Aiden, whom
they loved very much and enjoyed spending time with.
Robert was preceded in death by his
father, Stanford; his mother, Jennie; and his
step-mother, Helen.
Robert worked as a machinist in Chicago
for many years and also farmed. Robert later farmed full
time. Robert’s greatest enjoyment was dairy farming.
Robert had a second lease on life when he received a
heart transplant on August 8, 1997 in Iowa City. Bob and
his family are grateful to the transplant team at the
University of Iowa Hospital. Bob became focused on and
championed organ donation. He spent his remaining years
enjoying family, friends and travel and life in St.
Ansgar.

Hugh M. Hudson
July 24, 2012
Hugh M. Hudson, died on Sunday, July 22, 2012, in Montrose,
California, while in the Montrose Healthcare Center.
Funeral services were held at the St. James
Catholic Church, La Crescenta, California on Thursday, July
26, at 10:00 a.m., followed by graveside services in the San
Fernando Mission Cemetery.
Hugh was born on July 24, 1921 at his family
farm in Osage, Iowa. He was the first son of Pearl Mae
(Baker) Hudson and Maurice Marshel Hudson. Hugh served in
the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot in WW II before returning
to California to start a family with Phyllis.
Hugh was predeceased by his wife of 34 years,
Phyllis Marie (Glass) Hudson.
Hugh is survived by his three children,
Sheryl Ann Hudson of Glendale, California, Hugh Baker Hudson
of Santa Clarita, California and Valerie Sandra (Hudson)
Munch of Kent, Washington; sister, Elaine Hudson-Hamilton of
Des Moines.
A true highlight of Hugh’s life was to enjoy
watching his three grandsons grow up to be fine young men.

Robert Grimm
July 31, 2012
Robert Allen Grimm, age 63, currently of Lake Mills and
formerly of Mitchell, died on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at
the V.A. Medical Center in Des Moines.
Visitation was held from
2-5:00 p.m., on Saturday, July 28, at the Champion-Bucheit
Funeral Home in Osage. Following the visitation, cremation
will take place. Inurnment services will be held at a later
date in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Mitchell, with military
honors.
Robert was born on
December 20, 1948 in Austin, Minnesota, the son of John and
Norma (Stanton) Grimm. He attended Mitchell schools. Robert
served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam as a radio communication
specialist from October 1969 to October 1970. On August 23,
1969, he was united in marriage to Marjo Koster. To this
union, three children were born, Ken, Travis and Jason.
Robert was employed at Winnebago, White Farm, St. Ansgar
Mills, Dammen Farms and Norsemen Trucking, retiring in 2011.
He enjoyed truck driving,
camping, fishing and NASCAR. He had a passion for Chevrolet,
especially Corvettes. Robert especially enjoyed spending
time with his family and friends.
Robert is survived by two
sons, Ken (April) Grimm of Little Cedar and Jason Grimm of
Waterloo; eight grandchildren; Marjo Grimm of Charles City;
special extended family, the Don and Marilyn Helfter family;
sisters, Marge Olson and Shirley (Dick) Frank; brothers,
Jiggs (Janet) Grimm and Chuck (Jackie) Grimm; and many
nieces and nephews; half- brothers and sisters, Jake (Betty)
Grimm, Gladys (Gail) Garrison, Ileen Mostek, Sonny (Bonnie)
Grimm, Dottie (Virgil) Counsell, Roger (Leta) Grimm, Willy
Grimm and Betty (Arly) Ward.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, John Grimm and Norma Grimm Wells; his son,
Travis Grimm in 1999; and his half-brother, F.C. “Curly”
Grimm.

Eugene “Gene” E.
Sellon
July 31, 2012
Eugene “Gene” E. Sellon, 88, of Mason City, died on Friday,
July 27, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City.
Funeral services will be
held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, July 31, at the Nora Springs
United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, with the Reverend
Jerry Avise-Rouse officiating. Interment will be in the
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where full military
honors will be provided by the Nora Springs American Legion
Post 449. Visitation was held from 5-7:00 p.m., on Monday,
July 30, at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs. The
family suggests memorial contributions be designated to the
Hospice of North Iowa or Opportunity Village, Clear Lake,
Iowa.
Eugene E. Sellon, son of
Wayne and Hazel (Francis) Sellon was born on January 3, 1924
in Randolph, Nebraska. Gene attended schools in Randolph
before moving to Nora Springs with his family in 1938,
graduating from the Nora Springs High School in 1942. He
worked for the Rock Island Arsenal and enlisted in the
United States Navy in 1942. Gene was a landing craft crewman
serving on the U. S. S. Thomas Jefferson during World War
II. He and his shipmates participated in invasions of
Algeria, Sicily and Salerno, Italy. Gene was a severely
wounded in an action in the English Channel just prior to
Normandy and had not recovered in time for his ships
participation in the Omaha Beach landing at Normandy. Gene
however returned to duty in time for the invasion of
Southern France. The ship was transferred to Pacific duty
off Okinawa and later landed troops on the Japanese home
islands after their surrender. Gene was a distinguished
service man, earning two purple hearts and was honorably
discharged from the Navy in March of 1946.
Following his military
service, Gene was united in marriage to Lois Apel on
September 1, 1946. To this union, three children were born,
Tom, Steven and Terri. Gene and Lois raised their family in
Nora Springs for over 47 years. Gene farmed on the family
farm while Lois was a homemaker taking care of their
children. Gene and Lois moved to Mason City in 1993,
building their new home on North Carolina Avenue.
Gene’s passion was
farming, from raising cattle and hogs to growing crops. He
also acquired a passion for horses, having a pony when he
was younger and having horses for his daughter and
granddaughter. Gene was a member of the Nora Springs United
Methodist Church and the Nora Springs American Legion Post
449.
He will be dearly missed
by his wife of 66 years, Lois Sellon of Mason City;
children, Tom (Mary) Sellon of Janesville, Iowa and Terri
(Jim) Patchen of Mason City; grandchildren, Matt and Erin
Patchen of Mason City; brother, Duane (Ruth) Sellon of
Albany, Oregon; sister, Glenafa Vrchota of Mason City; along
with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; son, Steven Sellon; father and
mother-in-law, Elmer and Katie Apel; brother, Keith Sellon;
sister-in-law, Shirley Sellon; and brother-in-law, Lester
Vrchota.
