Kevin Wayne Gunsallus

February 7, 2012

Kevin Wayne Gunsallus, 54, of Clear Lake, passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at his home.  

Funeral services will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, on Tuesday, February 7, at 10:30 a.m., with Pastors Dan Gerrietts and Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery, Osage. There will be a visitation at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake, from 5-7:00 p.m., on Monday, February 7, and then one hour before the services on Tuesday, at the church. Family suggests memorials to the Kevin Wayne Gunsallus Memorial Fund.

Kevin was born on October 22, 1957 in Osage, the son of James and Phyllis Gunsallus and he was the oldest of their three children. He grew up in rural Osage before moving to Clear Lake in 1983.

While Kevin was not working in his chosen profession, Design Engineering, at IMT in Garner, he enjoyed many things in life. His passions included motorcycles, cars-Corvettes in particular, snowmobiles, Vikings, Hawkeyes, and the Minnesota Twins. He often tried to enjoy many of these activities on the same weekend. When he wasn't out enjoying those activities he always enjoyed his other passion, spending time with his family. Kevin often visited his parents on the weekend and cherished many days spending time with his daughters and their families. From play dates with his grandchildren to going to help work on his daughters' homes or out to sporting events with them, work or play, any excuse to spend time with his family was a treasured day.

Kevin is survived by his parents, James and Phyllis Gunsallus; a brother, Michael Gunsallus; a sister, Venita (Denis) Chezik; three daughters, Jacqlyn (Bill) Ferjak of Minneapolis Minnesota, Jennifer (Tom) Faber of Clear Lake and Jessica (Pete) Cash of Ventura; and by three grandchildren, Lorelei and James (Jessica) Cash and Kennidy (Jennifer) Faber; and by three nieces and nephews, Jeremy, Daniel and Megan (Venita) Chezik.

Cordella Firsching

February 7, 2012

Cordella Firsching, 91, of Stacyville, died on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at the Stacyville Nursing Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 4, at 10:30 a.m., at the Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with Fr. Jack McClure, CCPS, officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville. Visitation will be after 9:00 a.m., on Saturday, at the Church. The Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar, is in charge of the arrangements.

Cordella was born on May 18, 1920 in Spring Grove, Illinois, to John and Susie (Miller) Miller. In Spring Grove she married George Firsching on November 27, 1940. They farmed there until 1956, when they moved to Stacyville, Iowa. They farmed there till they moved to town in 1976.

Cordella was active in Christian Mothers and Foresters. She along with George were very supportive to all of the town's functions, the church, school, library, fire department and nursing home. She enjoyed fishing, quilting, cards, scrabble, people and the rosary. She loved anything to do with Mother Earth; gardening, yard work and even weeding. She also loved farming, working with her husband side by side. Cordella's greatest joy was her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; parents, John and Susie Miller; two daughters, Irma and Donna; and sister, Cecelia Miller.

Cordella is survived by a daughter, Karen (John) Marsh; brother-in-law, Joe Firsching of Mason City; sisters-in-law, Gert Retterath of Austin, Minnesota and Theresa Ungaro of San Pedro, California; and many nieces and nephews.

Carol Fisher

February 7, 2012

Carol Fisher, 68, of Springfield, Missouri, died on Saturday, February 4, 2012, at her home. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Pastor Mitch Wright of the Glendale Baptist Church, Springfield, will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8:00 p.m., on Tuesday and on Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the services.

Carol Rae Marreel Fisher, was born on February 24, 1943 at Osage, the daughter of Ray and Huberta (Knight) Marreel. She was the second oldest of four siblings. Carol grew up in and around the Osage area graduating from the Osage High School. In 1961, she joined the United States Navy but her Navy career was short due to a medical condition. On July 20, 1963, Carol married the love of her life Cyron "Bud" Fisher. In 1987, they moved to Missouri to run a convenience store. After 13 years they retired from the convenience store business. Carol then went to work in the Home Health Care field up until her diagnosis of Mesothelioma. She was a member of the Brookline Baptist Church. Her interests included painting, golfing, bike riding and reading.

Living family members include her husband, Cyron "Bud" Fisher of Springfield, Missouri; a son, Cyron "Buddy" Fisher of McAlester, Oklahoma; three daughters, Jacque (Mike) Walden of Lynn Creek, Missouri, Dana (Mark) Jones of Minooka, Illinois and Kelli (John) Peak of Springfield, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Michael and Preston Walden, Krystal and Mark Jones, Jordan and Jacob Fisher and Chelsea and J.J. Peak; and three great-grandchildren, Maya Walden, Marie Miller and Ebony Fisher; a brother, Larry Marreel of Long Beach, Mississippi; and two sisters, Maralee (David) Crooks of Evansdale and Sue Burreson and friend, Terry Squier of Ionia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Doug Fisher.

Elsie Rachut

February 9, 2012

Elsie Rachut, 87, of St. Ansgar, died on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 11, at 11:00 a.m., at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Dr. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. There will be no visitation. The Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar, is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Immanuel Lutheran Sunday School, St. Ansgar Fire Department or to the St. Ansgar Rescue.

Elsie was born on April 25, 1924 in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, at the farm home of her parents, Henry and Ida (Groth) Pagel. She was baptized on June 1, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, by Rev. Paul Brammer and confirmed on April 11, 1938. She attended the Newburg #5 Country School for eight years and graduated from the St. Ansgar High School in 1942. She went to Iowa State Teachers College for one year and then began teaching at the rural school, Newburg #6.

On September 26, 1948, she was married to Arthur Rachut at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, by Rev. Theo Eickelberg. They made their home on a farm southwest of St. Ansgar. They became parents of Joyce and Jerry. In 1964, the family moved to St. Ansgar. She continued her education by taking summer classes and night classes. At the end of the 1970 summer session she received her BA from the University of Northern Iowa. Elsie taught fourth grade in the St. Ansgar Elementary School for thirty years. Following retirement she was a substitute teacher for seven years. She served as a Resident Advocate at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar for twelve years. Elsie also served on the Nissen Library Board and on the St. Ansgar Heritage Association Board.

She was a lifetime member of the Naomi Circle and a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher for many years. Elsie was a member of the Alpha Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority for educators. Her hobbies were reading, genealogy, traveling and sewing quilts for her family. Her great joys were her Savior, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; parents, Henry and Ida Pagel; and brothers, John and George Pagel.

Elsie is survived by her two children, Joyce (John) Westrem of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Jerry (Donna) Rachut of St. Ansgar; four grandchildren, Kelly (Adam) Beyer, Amanda (Jay) Melcher, Kris (Mandi) Rachut and Allison (Scott) Huston; four great-grandchildren, Jaidyn, Bailey and Cade Beyer and Luke Melcher; two sisters, Alfrieda Crooks and Dorothy Pahl; sister-in-law, Luella Page; and several nieces and nephews.

Alice "Nana" Malmin

February 14, 2012

Alice Helen (DeLano) Malmin, age 88, of Osage, peacefully passed away in her home with the care of the North Iowa Hospice and Rose Mustain, on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, February 18, at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with Rev. Roy Ott and Pastor Edward Bard, Chaplain at the Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation is from 7-9:00 p.m., on Friday, February 17, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Alice was born on December 3, 1923 in Stacyville, Iowa, the daughter of Hugh and Rose (Adams) DeLano. She was married in Richmond, California, to Ernhart Malmin on October 14, 1943 and they were blessed with five children. They resided in California for 41 years until 1984 when they retired back to Osage, in Alice's home state of Iowa. Alice was a beautician and caterer.

She loved to dance, play cards and bingo, and was an avid baker specializing in Norwegian pastry. They were life members of the Sons of Norway. Alice was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, V.F.W. Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, the Senior Center and other community related clubs.

 The surviving family members are a son, Allen (Lorraine) Malmin and their children, Mike B. Malmin and Sandy (Keith) Miller; a son, Karl (Donna) Malmin and their children, Kelly (Bryan) Malgradi and Karla (Scott) Hirayama; a son, Kevin (Nancy) Malmin and their children, Lindy (Ben) Cannady, Michael A. Malmin (Jill Malmin-Krebsbach) and Kyle J. Malmin (Brandi Malmin-Hansen); a daughter, Rose Mustain and her children, Joseph Mustain and Carrie Hinders; a granddaughter, Kristina Malmin; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Hugh DeLano; one brother, Edward; one sister, Irene and husband, Earl Benton; her husband, Ernhart; her son, Tom and wife, Julie; son-in-law, David "Ranch" Mustain; and granddaughters, Krystal Mustain and Jessy Malmin.

Jane Ellen Eastman

February 14, 2012

Jane Ellen Eastman, age 60, of North Mankato, Minnesota, died on Thursday, February 9, 2012, at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in North Mankato, Minnesota.

Saturday, February 11, marked the day to celebrate her life. The celebration was led by Pastor Randy Leib from the Fountain of Life Church (Panora, Iowa) where Jane enjoyed worshiping God.

Jane was born on April 18, 1951 in Osage, Iowa, to Herbert Blaine Eastman and Lorene Mae (Cockrum) Eastman. She was married to Arie J. Oudekerk for 27 years and later divorced. In 1998, she met Phillip L. Henry and lived in North Mankato, Minnesota since. Jane started her adult life as a cosmetologist and was a homemaker raising three children. She was proud of her success raising dogs in her "No-Nose Kennel" that was USDA certified. Later on, she graduated and became a travel agent at Sterling Travel in Austin, Minnesota. She then moved to St. Louis Park, Minnesota, to successfully complete her degree as a Veterinarian Technician. Jane was also an excellent child care provider, helping to raise numerous children throughout her lifetime.

Jane enjoyed her family, grandchildren, gardening flowers and vegetables with Phillip, baking/cooking/canning, bird watching, traveling and reading.

Jane was preceded in death by her mother, Lorene in 2004 and newborn brother, Kevin Lane.

She is survived by her significant other, Phillip L. Henry of North Mankato, Minnesota; father, Herbert Blaine Eastman of North Mankato; sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Tim Schoenwetter of Stewartville, Minnesota; children, Trenton J. Oudekerk of Wollongong, Australia and James J. (& Tammy) Oudekerk of Madison Lake, Minnesota and Arianne J. (Oudekerk) (& Ryan) Steenblock of Panora, Iowa; and five grandchildren.



Susie Block Voigts

February 14, 2012

On Sunday, February 12, 2012, Susie Block Voigts, age 91, heard her Savior say, "Today you will be with me in Paradise."

Services are pending at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Vilmar.

Susie was born on December 12, 1920, to Henry and Bena Hovenga Block on a farm near Hansell, Iowa. She graduated from the Dumont High School in 1937 and attended Iowa State Teacher's College. She taught rural school both before and after her marriage to Merlyn Voigts in 1945. They farmed in the Vilmar (Greene) community. Together they raised four children, Susanne (Steve) Cooper of Osage, Bruce (Joan) Voigts of Clarion, Brenda (Dennis) Schmadeke of Cedar Falls and Kevin (Kate) Voigts of Kabul, Afghanistan. Merlyn passed away in 1977.

In 2001, due to crippling Rheumatoid arthritis, she moved to Osage to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She remained there until last month when she entered the Bartels Home in Waverly. Writing was one of her many passions, so she joined the Osage Alpha Writers group. Her poems were included in "Lyrical Iowa" the last four years and at age 90, she completed a book telling her grandmother's immigration story.

Susie is survived by her four children; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.



Arnold K. Hanson

March 6, 2012

Arnold K. Hanson, 95, died on Monday, February 20, 2012, at the St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Sunday, March 4, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage, by Pastor Torens. The Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, is in charge of the arrangements.

Arnold Kenneth Hanson, was born on January 5, 1917 in Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Kristine (Framstad) Hanson. He graduated from the Plymouth High School. Arnold was proud of his service in the Army Air Corps. During that time, he was sent to Detroit, Michigan, where the Air Corps trained him to repair Mersedes-Benz airplane engines. While there, he met Betty Ann McPherson and they were married on July 13, 1947. The couple farmed near Osage. Following retirement from farming, the couple moved to Nora Springs. Arnold spent his remaining years near Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Arnold could always find time to bowl and pitch horseshoes. He shared these contests with Betty and challenged many family members and friends in tournaments. His trophies grace the homes of his children and grandchildren. Arnold holds the 1989 National Championship title in his class. Arn, Arny, or Grandpa Arnold, he answered to all of these names. He had a special place in his heart for all the little children. Arnold always had a book at his side and read many a western. Thanks to his friends at the Nora Springs Public Library.

The Rock Creek Lutheran Church in rural Osage, played an important role in Arnold's life. The family request memorials to be directed towards its ministry. Arnold would want to say "Mon Tusen Takk!" (Many thousand thanks).

Survivors include three children, Donald (Jo) Hanson of Center Point, Linda (Willard) Maas of Parkston, South Dakota and Richard (Pat) Hanson of Des Moines; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Olaf (Dorothy) Hanson of San Jose, California; and many extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; brother, Glen (Alvira) Hanson; and sister, Myrtle (Carl) Christiansen.

Helen A. Jellum

March 6, 2012

Helen A. (Skogsmark) Jellum, age 95, of Osage, died on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 25, at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage, with Rev. Stephen Bohling and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment was in the Osage Cemetery.

Helen was born on March 28, 1916 in Turtle Lake, North Dakota, the daughter of Iver and Minnie (Stinson) Skogsmark. After the death of Helen’s father, the family went to live with her maternal grandparents, Andrew and Brita Stinson, on their farm near Cresco. She graduated from the Cresco High School in 1934. In 1938, Helen received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Luther College and in 1946 received her Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Iowa. After completing her Master’s Degree, she taught piano and music theory at Luther College. She then took teaching assignments at several towns in Minnesota. Helen moved to Washington state in 1952 where she worked as an administrative secretary for the Army Corps of Engineers.

Helen enjoyed the mountains, the ocean and being outdoors. She especially enjoyed hiking. Throughout her life, she was active in her church and continued to express her love for music by serving as a church organist in a variety of congregations. Later in life, Helen married Lloyd Jellum and they made their home in Osage.

Helen is survived by two stepsons, Mark (Christine) Jellum of Osage and Eric (Annette) Jellum of Osage; step-grandchildren, Trula Schafer of Edmonds, Washington, Jeff (KT) Schafer and their sons, Samuel and Joseph, of Cedar Rapids and Joshua (Kristina) Schafer of Kent, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Inez Jellum; and her husband, Lloyd Jellum.

Sarah Ann Stang

March 6, 2012

Sarah Ann Stang, age 78, of Osage, died on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage. 

Sarah donated her body to the Mayo Clinic with the hope that her gift would assist education and research.  Memorial services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, February 25, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with Pastor Sam Mack officiating. A gathering of family and friends was held at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Sarah was born on June 16, 1933 in Spencer, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin and Ruth (Langland) Hudtloff. She graduated from the Kamrar High School in 1951, from the University of Iowa in 1956, and from Mankato State University in 1980. Sarah married Dale Stang on June 7, 1958, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage. Sarah was a music teacher at Osage, Little Cedar, Mitchell, and Sacred Heart and taught students with learning disabilities in Belmond Schools. She also was a corn detasseling supervisor.

Sarah was a member of the Methodist Church, where she was a choir member and director, a member of the United Methodist Women, and the Naomi Circle. She was also a member of Eastern Star, Alpha Writers, and was a member and director of the Sweet Adelines Music City Chorus. Sarah was a home school supervisor and exchange student coordinator. She enjoyed golfing with friends and family, riding with Dale on the motorcycle, puzzles of all kinds, knitting, visiting nursing homes with their dog, Pepper, gardening and taking care of her grandchildren.

Sarah is survived by her husband, Dale Stang of Osage; her children, Mark (Marcia) Stang of Dover, Arkansas, Eric (Ellie) Stang of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, Alan Stang of Phoenix, Arizona and Jeanne (Gary) Swenson of Kelley; five grandchildren, Joshua Prince, Kaleb Prince, Ben Stang, Brendan Stang and Timmy Stang; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Strackbein of Gibbon, Minnesota and Louise Young of North Liberty.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Vernon G. Amundson

March 6, 2012

Vernon G. Amundson, age 85, of Osage, died on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at the Faith Home Assisted Living in Osage.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 25, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Osage, with Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Burial was in the Rock Creek Cemetery, with military honors at the grave by the Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation was at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Vernon was born on November 22, 1926 near Osage, Iowa, the son of Adolph and Gustava (Erickson) Amundson. He graduated from the Osage High School and then served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in Japan. After returning from the service, he attended Hamilton Business School. He then worked for Western Union as a relief office manager in the midwest and as an office manager in the Omaha office. After his retirement, Vernon moved back to Osage.

He was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. Vernon was an avid collector of antiques.

Vernon is survived by nieces and nephews, Edna (Marvin) Norby of Osage, Gary (Lavonne) Cockrum of Osage, Patricia (Ron) Thompson of Waterloo, Jim (Lodema) Cockrum of Osage, Mary (Keith) Lugg of Casper, Wyoming, Connie (Ken) Eagen of Osage, Alice (Charles) Olswold of Muscatine and Dean (Lu Ann) Cockrum of Osage; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alvin and Hilmer Amundson; two sisters, Marian Cockrum and Alice Nack; and two nieces, Norma Jean Olson and Arla Wherry.

Dr. Roland E. Loudermilk

March 6, 2012

Dr. Roland E. Loudermilk, 70, of No. Hollywood, California, passed away on Friday, February 24, 2012, at his home. He lost his life due to a battle with cancer.

Services were held on Saturday, March 3, in California.

Rollie was a 1959 OCHS graduate, then entered the U.S. Marine Corp. and served four years. He returned to Iowa and attended NIAAC in Mason City, University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona and later went to become a Dr. of Chiropractic in 1974.

Left to cherish is memory are his wife, Margit; daughter, Betina and son, David, all of California; his siblings, Della Cordle, Clarissa Johnson, Frances Johnson, Thelma Scharper, all of Osage and Paul Loudermilk of Louisiana.

He was preceded in death by his father, Delber Loudermilk in 1963 and mother, Elleanora Loudermilk Rex, in 2010; brothers-in-law, Merwin (Irish) Comisky and Kenneth Johnson.
