Nancy L. Rogers,
age 66, of Osage, died on
Monday, September 4, 2006, at
the Mitchell County Regional
Health Center-Hospice Unit in
Osage, surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at
10:00 a.m., on Thursday,
September 7, 2006, at the First
United Methodist Church in
Osage, with Rev. Dr. J. Samuel
Subramanian and Pastor Mike
Augsburger officiating. Burial
will be in the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-8:00
p.m., on Wednesday, September 6,
at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral
Home in Osage, with a short
prayer service at 7:00 p.m., and
will continue one hour before
the services at the church on
Thursday.
Nancy was born on January 2,
1940 in Scranton, Pennsylvania,
the daughter of Norris and Leah
(Bartelson) Scott. She was
united in marriage to Lawrence
A. Rogers on July 20, 1957 in
South Sterling, Pennsylvania.
Nancy and Lawrence farmed for
many years southwest of Osage.
She worked for the last ten
years at the west Casey's in
Osage as a pizza maker until she
recently retired. She was a long
time member of the First United
Methodist Church in Osage.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Lawrence in 1995; her
father, Norris; and her brother,
Jim.
Nancy is survived by her
children, Larry (Deb) Rogers of
Altoona, Tim (Jolene) Rogers of
Ringsted, Julie (Larry)
Fredrickson of Manly, Danny
(Lisa) Rogers of Osage, Melody
Rogers of Osage and Scott
(Kellie) Rogers of Osage; 17
grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren; her mother,
Leah Scott of Tobyhanna,
Pennsylvania; one sister, Judy
Evans of Tobyhanna,
Pennsylvania; several nieces and
nephews; and many relatives and
special friends.

La Mar Emerson

La Mar Emerson,
age 66, of Little Cedar, passed
away on Thursday, September 7,
2006, at the Mitchell County
Regional Health Center in Osage,
as the result of a battle with
cancer.
Funeral services were held at
10:30 a.m., on Monday, September
11, 2006, at Our Savior's
Lutheran Church in Osage, with
Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial
was in the Little Cedar Cemetery
in Little Cedar.
La Mar was born on September 17,
1939 at Osage, Iowa, the son of
Clell and Sara (Jensen) Emerson.
He graduated from the Little
Cedar High School in 1959, and
then attended the Reisch College
of Auctioneering in Mason City.
On December 26, 1960, La Mar
married Helen Thompson at Our
Savior's Lutheran Church in
Osage. He farmed and was
employed as a truck driver by L.
R. Falk Construction, Heartland
Asphalt, and Carlson
Construction. La Mar enjoyed
raising Black Angus Cattle, ice
fishing, and telling stories.
He was preceded in death by his
parents.
La Mar is survived by his wife,
Helen Emerson of Little Cedar;
three sons, Keith Emerson of
Little Cedar, Kirk Emerson and
his wife, Lisa of Osage and
their children, Sara, Amy, and
Alex, Ken Emerson and his wife,
Diane of Osage, and their son,
Derik.
Funeral arrangements were made

Norman E. Watson,
age 86, of Osage, died on
Saturday, September 9, 2006, at
the Faith Home in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at
11:00 a.m., on Wednesday,
September 13, 2006, at the First
United Methodist Church in
Osage, with Rev. Dr. J. Samuel
Subramanian and Rev. Thomas
Franklin officiating. Burial
will be in the Osage Cemetery,
with Military Honors at the
grave by the Osage American
Legion Post 278. Visitation was
from 4-8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at
the Champion-Bucheit Funeral
Home in Osage, with the family
present from 4-5:00 p.m. and
from 7-8:00 p.m. Visitation will
continue one hour before the
services at the church on
Wednesday.
Norman was born on July 20, 1920
in Ironwood, Michigan, the son
of Edward and Marion (Lutey)
Watson. Norman graduated from
high school at Hurley,
Wisconsin. He served in the
United States Marine Corps
during World War II. Norman
graduated from the University of
Wisconsin-Stout in 1948.
On June 6, 1948, he married
Phyllis Anne Johnson at the
Methodist Church in Monroe,
Wisconsin. Norman and Phyllis
taught school at Black River
Falls, Wisconsin. They then
moved to Humboldt, Iowa. During
this time, Norman taught at
Gilmore City, and Phyllis taught
at Luverne. In 1967, they moved
to Osage, where Norman taught
Industrial Arts, and developed
the CVE program. Norman retired
in 1989. He was involved with
the Boy Scouts, and was a past
District Governor of the Iowa
Lions Club. Norman enjoyed music
and loved to sing. Norman was
dedicated to education and
helping young people through his
teaching.
In lieu of flowers, donations
may be given to the Iowa Lions
Eye Bank, Iowa City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; a son, Thom; a brother,
Billy; and four sisters, Grace,
Ruth, Dorothy and Margaret.
Norman is
survived by his wife, Phyllis
Watson of Osage; a son, David
Watson of Minneapolis,
Minnesota; a daughter, Joan
(Katie) Watson of Brooklyn Park,
Minnesota; and a sister, Jean
Coble of Greenville, South
Carolina.

Jeanette C. Baty

Jeanette Carlson
Baty, 85, of Cedar Falls, died
on Sunday morning, September 10,
2006, of injuries suffered in an
automobile accident on June 27.
She had been a patient at the
University of Iowa Hospitals and
Clinics since being flown there
from Independence following the
accident. A celebration of life
service will be held at a later
date at the University of
Northern Iowa.
Mrs. Baty was born on August 20,
1921, in rural Pocahontas
County, Iowa, the daughter of
Grace Alberts Carlson and John
Francis Carlson. She was
educated in the rural schools of
Pocahontas County, graduated
from the Pocahontas High School
in 1938 and from Cornell College
in Mt. Vernon in 1942.
A highly regarded teacher of
English and Literature, she
taught in Norway, Iowa, Flint,
Michigan, Newton, Iowa and Osage
Iowa.
On June 29, 1956, she was
married to Jackson N. Baty in
Pocahontas. They lived in Osage
for 21 years, and then moved to
Cedar Falls.
Mrs. Baty was the first woman
ever elected to the Osage City
Council, where she served for
two terms. She was news editor
of the Mitchell County
Press-News for a brief period
before returning to her "first
love" the classroom, in Osage.
She retired from teaching in
1987.
She is survived by her husband
of 50 years, Jackson; by her
son, Corliss (Suzanne) of
Maquoketa; her daughter, Jean
Annette (Sean) Young of Westby,
Wisconsin; her four
grandchildren, Emily K. Baty of
Centennial, Colorado, Erin Jill
Miller of Loveland, Colorado,
Timothy N. Young and Kathleen G.
Young, both of Westby,
Wisconsin.
Memorials may be
given in her name to the Iowa
Foundation for the Blind,
National Rivers Hall of Fame
(Mississippi River Museum) and
the University of Northern Iowa
Foundation.
Funeral arrangements were made

passed away at her residence in
Yuma on Sunday, September 10,
2006.

Saturday, September 16, 2006,
with the Rev. Ray E. Attwood
officiating. Burial was in the
Calvary Cemetery, Riceville.
Sybil was born on October 10,
1915 in Riceville, to Walter and
Winnifred Wentworth Lonie. She
attended local schools and
graduated from the Riceville
High School in 1934.
Survivors include sons, Marvin
(Kathy) and Roger; and a
daughter, Barbara (Bill) Martin
of Riceville.

Brandau, age 94, of Osage, and
formerly of Rudd, died on
Monday, September 11, 2006, at
the Faith Lutheran Home in
Osage.
Funeral services will be held at
10:30 a.m., on Thursday,
September 14, 2006, at the Eden
Presbyterian Church, Rudd, with
Rev. John Bates officiating.
Burial will be in the Eden
Presbyterian Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5-7:00 p.m.,
on Wednesday, September 13, at
the Champion-Bucheit Funeral
Home in Osage and will continue
one hour before the services at
the church on Thursday.
Clinton was born on February 20,
1912 near Rudd, Iowa, the son of
John A. and Gertrude (Mausehund)
Brandau. He was baptized in
April of 1912 and confirmed in
April of 1926 at the Eden
Presbyterian Church, rural Rudd.
Clinton attended schools in
Rudd, and was a 1931 graduate of
the Rudd High School. He
participated in baseball and
basketball, with each of those
teams making it to the state
tournament.
Clinton married Dorothy Brandau
on May 7, 1940, and they were
devoted to each other for 66
years. Clinton lived 76 of his
94 years on his family's Century
Farm. Farming was not only his
livelihood, it was his passion.
He was a life long member of the
Eden Presbyterian Church, where
he served as an Elder and a
Deacon. Clinton enjoyed his
family and friends, and will be
remembered for his great sense
of humor. He loved playing
cards, especially "500". He also
enjoyed watching the Minnesota
Twins and Iowa Hawkeye
Basketball.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; his daughter, Sandra
Krull; a sister, Emma Kupker;
two brothers, Elmer and Lloyd
Brandau; and all of his cousins.
Clinton is survived by his
beloved wife, Dorothy Brandau of
Osage; three grandchildren,
Marlan Krull and his sons,
Brandon and Jordan of Mason
City; Pamela Carman (Eric) and
their sons, Sam and Zach of
Minnetonka, Minnesota; Kenneth
Krull (Christine Schrage) and
her son, Carter of Phoenix,
Arizona; and a son-in-law,
Marvin Krull of Mason City.

Dorothy Ehlke,
age 71, of Arlington, passed
away on Thursday, September 14,
2006, at the Gaylord Lakeview
Home.
Funeral services were held on
Tuesday, September 19, at the
Zion Lutheran Church in
Arlington. Memorial services
were also held at the St. Peter
Lutheran Church in Toeterville,
at 3:30 p.m. Burial followed in
the St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery.
Dorothy was born on March 23,
1935, to Brodie and Bertha
(Smolik) Mitchell in Casey,
Illinois. She attended and
graduated from the Osage High
School in 1954 and married
William "Bill" Ehlke on January
14, 1956, at the First Baptist
Church in Osage. Dorothy was a
wife and mother for many years.
In 1986 they moved off the
family farm in Iowa and moved to
Arlington, Minnesota.
Dorothy was a Sunday School
Teacher for 35 years and an
active member of the church and
women's groups of St. Peter
Lutheran in St. Ansgar and Zion
Lutheran in Arlington,
Minnesota. She later worked at
the Kramer Meat Market and
cooked for 10 years at the
Arlington-Green Isle (Sibley
East) High School. Dorothy
volunteered at the St. Ansgar
Good Samaritan and Arlington
Good Samaritan Centers. She was
President of the Mitchell County
Farm Bureau and a member of the
VFW and American Legion
Auxiliary in Arlington.
Preceding Dorothy in death were
her parents; parents-in-law;
son, Paul William; sister, Mary
Berge; and brothers, Charles
Mitchell and Lloyd Mitchell.
She is survived by her husband,

Esther (Schulz)
Ruble, age 91, of Albuquerque,
New Mexico and formerly of
Osage, passed away peacefully
into the loving arms of Jesus at
11:30 a.m. on Friday, September
15, 2006, in Albuquerque. She
was at home with her family
comforting her.
Funeral services will be held at
1:30 p.m., on Thursday,
September 21, 2006, at the
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in
Osage, with Rev. Robert Melhorn
officiating. Interment will be
in the Osage Cemetery in Osage.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to
1:30 p.m., on Thursday, at the
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home,
Osage.
Esther was born on the family
farm north of Osage, to Emery
and Ella (Manning) Baker on
April 16, 1915. She grew up in
Iowa and was the 6th of 10
children. She attended school in
Mitchell and Osage. Esther
married Harold Schulz in 1935.
They farmed near Osage for six
years and then near Waterloo for
another six years, before moving
back to Osage, where they were
in the cafe and restaurant
business until Harold's death in
1970.
They had four children,
Marjorie, Patricia, Ronald and
Terry. After Harold's death
Esther moved to Napa,
California, where she met and
married Paul Ruble in 1973. They
resided in the Napa area for
many years and did a lot of
traveling in their motor home.
They mostly spent their summers
in Osage. They retired to their
permanent home in Desert Hot
Springs, California, but
continued to travel and maintain
a home in Osage until 2003. Paul
passed away in October of 2005.
Esther lived in her own home
next to her daughter, Pat in
Albuquerque until her death.
Preceding her in death were her
husbands, Harold and Paul; her
precious granddaughter, Laurie
Angell; and her three precious
great-grandchildren, Pacer,
Aaron and Naomi Power; her
parents; infant brother, Roger;
brother, Albert (Bud) Baker; her
sisters, Grace, Ruth, Cleo,
Bernice and Alta; and her
son-in-law, Manuel Cabral.
Esther leaves behind to love her

Leonard John
Mayer, 81, of Mason City, died
on Monday, September 25, 2006,
at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
A funeral mass was held at 10:00
a.m., on Friday, September 29,
2006, at the Holy Family
Catholic Church, Mason City,
with Rev. Jon M. Seda
officiating. Burial was in the
Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery,
Manly, with military honors
being conducted by the Osage
VFW.
Leonard John Mayer, was born on
June 24, 1925 at Stacyville, the
son of Paul and Anna (Meyer)
Mayer. As a young boy Leonard
moved with his family to
Riceville, where he attended
school. He enlisted in the US
Army and served his country
during WW II in the Philippines.
After his honorable discharge in
1946, he returned to Riceville.
He was united in marriage to
Charlene Van Every in 1949.
Leonard farmed in the Riceville
area and worked at Oliver
Implement in Charles City for
several years. He retired from
farming full time in 1973 and
continued to hobby farm for many
years. In 2004, he moved to
Mason City.
He loved his family, country,
and church. Leonard enjoyed
fishing, dancing, camping,
traveling, and playing cards. He
was a life long member of the
Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church, Riceville, and most
recently the Holy Family
Catholic Church, Mason City.
Leonard was a member of the
Osage VFW and Riceville American
Legion.
Leonard is survived by his
special friend, Claretta Riha of
Mason City; four children, Jerry
(Janet) Mayer of Winterset,
Carol (LeRoy) Janssen of Osage,
Randy (Dorothy) Mayer of
Riceville and Crystal Pope of

Albina Wolf

Albina Wolf, 93,
of Stacyville, Iowa, died on
Friday, September 29, 2006, at
the Stacyville Community Nursing
Home.
Funeral services will be held on
Friday, October 6, 2006, at
10:30 a.m., at the Visitation
Catholic Church, Stacyville,
with Rev. John Moser
officiating. Burial will be in
the Visitation Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the
church on Thursday evening from
6:00-8:00 p.m.
Albina Wolf, was born on
December 6, 1912 in Lonsdale,
Minnesota, to Frank and Albina
Franek Bastyr. She attended high
school in Faribault and
graduated from the Austin High
School.
Albina married Ralph J. Wolf of
Stacyville, on August 31, 1936
in Austin. She worked at
Hormel's in Austin before her
marriage and assisted Ralph at
his insurance, bookkeeping, and
real estate office after they
moved to Stacyville in 1948. In
1964 they moved to Mason City
and Albina became a stay-at-home
mom and an avid fan of her sons'
many baseball and basketball
games. In 1970 Ralph and Albina
moved to Florida, where Albina
developed interests in flower
gardening and golfing. They
returned to Mason City in 1986.
The last years of her life she
was a resident of the Stacyville
Community Nursing Home. Albina
will be remembered by her family
with the motto she lived by:
"Life is what you make it."
Preceding her in death were her
parents; husband, Ralph J. Wolf;
son, Paul in January of 2006;
son, John in infancy; a grandson
in infancy; brother, Robert
Bastyr; and sisters, Mary
Peroutka, Helen Wehner and
Martha Lynch.
Albina is survived by her

Shanahan, 46, of Blaine,
Minnesota and formerly of Osage,
died in late September 2006,
while on a fishing trip on Mille
Lacs Lake in Minnesota.
Memorial services were held at
2:00 p.m., on Sunday, October 8,
2006, at Our Savior's Lutheran
Church in Osage, with the Rev.
Dennis Hanson officiating.
Inurnment was in the Little
Cedar Cemetery. Following the
services, a time of fellowship
took place at the home of Jeff
and Jayne Olsen, Osage.
Chris was born on October 17,
1959, in Osage, Iowa, the son of
Carol (Hill) Shanahan and
Michael J. Shanahan. Chris
graduated from the Osage High
School in 1978, and attended the
University of Northern Iowa and
the University of Iowa. He was a
self-employed carpenter and an
avid sportsman. Though his death
was untimely, Chris's family and
friends find solace in knowing
that he died doing what he loved
best.
Chris is survived by his mother,
Carol Shanahan formerly of Osage
and now of Jacksonville, North
Carolina and his father, Michael
J. Shanahan.
He is also survived by his
brother, Michael and wife, Kelly
and their children, Casey and
Lindsay of Jacksonville, North
Carolina and Michael Shanahan of
Davenport; a special friend,
Connie Beck and children,
Stephanie and Nicholas of
Blaine, Minnesota; an uncle,
Ronald Hill; aunts, Kay Hill and

Maurice J.
Kleckner, 86, died on Saturday,
September 30, 2006, after a
brief stay in Mercy Hospital.
Memorial services were held on
Friday, October 6, 2006, at 2:00
p.m., at the Visitation Catholic
Church, Stacyville, with Rev.
John Moser officiating. Burial
was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.
Maurice was born on February 2,
1920 in New Haven, Iowa, the son
of Ernest J. and Florence (Fox)
Kleckner. He was baptized in the
St. Peter Catholic Church, New
Haven and confirmed and married
at the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church, Osage.
Maurice enlisted in the U.S.
Navy in 1939 and served six
years. He obtained the rank of
Chief Petty Officer and was
honorably discharged in 1945. He
was assigned to the U.S.S.
Helena and was a Pearl Harbor
survivor. He stayed with the
Helena until it was sunk during
the Battle of Kula Gulf in the
south Pacific. Maurice was
extremely patriotic and his
service to his country was one
of his valued accomplishments.
On May 7, 1949, he married Leona
Pattyn and six children were
born of their union. They made
their home on a farm near St.
Ansgar. He received extreme
satisfaction from cultivating
the land to support his family.
In his free time Maurice enjoyed
fishing, cards and visiting with
friends. His greatest pleasure
was his grandchildren.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; four
brothers, Adrian, Arnie, Bob and
Ray; and two sisters, Helen and
Patricia.
Maurice is survived by his wife
of 57 years, Leona; his six
children, Mark, Steve (Janet),
Nancy (Tom) Schrag, Ernie
(Mary), Sally (Bob) Hertel and
Patrick (Marianne); ten
grandchildren, Matthew, Luke,
Christina, John and Emily
Kleckner, Adam and Spencer
Schrag and Jess, Jenny and
Jackson Hertel; one
great-granddaughter, Madelyn;
two brothers, Jim and Bill
Kleckner; and two sisters,
Bernice Paulson and Mary
Schwable.
The Schroeder & Sites Funeral
Home, St. Ansgar, was in charge
of the arrangements.
