Harald F. "Bud" Goplerud

October 8, 2003

Harald F. "Bud" Goplerud, 83, of Mason City, died on Thursday, October 2, 2003, at the IOOF Home, Mason City.

A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, October 6, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, with Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to the Hospice of North Iowa or the Winnebago Boy Scout Council.

Bud was born in Osage, Iowa, on October 2, 1920 and died on his 83rd birthday of complications from Parkinson's. He was the son of Clifford and Ethel Goplerud and brother to Ann Goplerud Kennedy, Dr. Jane Goplerud and Dr. C.P. Goplerud. In 1947, he married June Adel Kunz from Wesley, Iowa. Together they have four children, Dena of Des Moines, Nann of Dallas, Texas, H.F. Jr. of Los Angeles, California and Julia of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by sons-in-law, Dr. Thomas Zisko, Ben Weaver and Dr. Arland Hotchkiss; 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Leigh, Patrick, Benjamin, Brett and Samuel.

Bud graduated from the Osage High School in 1938 and from Grinnell College in 1942 with degrees in chemistry and economics. During the war years, he worked at the Eastman Company in Oakridge, Tennessee, supervising the separation of uranium isotopes U-238 from Y-235 through an electro-magnetic process. In 1947, Bud established Goplerud Lubricants, Inc. in Mason City. He was owner and president for 37 years until his retirement at age 64.

He was enthusiastically involved in many organizations such as the Boy Scout Eagle Board, Jefferson Boy Scout Troop #2, Director of the First National Bank for 27 years, President of the Mason City Country Club and the Euchre & Cycle Club, and a member of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce and Elks Lodge. Bud will be remembered for his sincere interest in people of all ages and backgrounds. He had many devoted friends and often entertained them with his humor and wit.

He loved golf and other outdoor activities. Bud had an avid interest in music, grammar, agriculture and learning about diverse subjects. He will live on in the memory of many.

John Koenigs

October 8, 2003

John Koenigs, 70, of McIntire, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness.

A Memorial Mass was held at 12:00 noon, on Monday, October 6, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, Iowa. Father Mark Reasoner officiated. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meyer.

John was born on September 30, 1933, to Paul and Marie Bissen Koenigs at Meyer, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Jean Bartlett on September 25, 1954, at the Sacred Heart Church in Meyer. "Big John" was a retired farmer.

His father preceded him in death.

John's survivors include his wife, Bonnie of McIntire; three sons, Larry Koenigs and his wife, Becky of Northfield, Minnesota, Russell Koenigs and his wife, Lee Ann of McIntire and Richard Koenigs and his fiancée, Leanne Knoop of Marshalltown, Iowa; one daughter, Nancy Ann Koenigs and her husband, Kevin Carlson of Lake City, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Marie Koenigs of Stacyville; three brothers, Deo Koenigs and his wife, Joan of St. Ansgar, Roman Koenigs and his wife, Ruth of Waseca, Minnesota and Jerry Koenigs and his wife, Sandy of McIntire; and one sister, Elaine Ramberg and her husband, Dan of Hugo, Minnesota.

Julia Lambaere

October 8, 2003

Julia Lambaere, passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2003, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated on Monday, October 6, at the St. Ansgar Catholic Church, with Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial followed in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Julia was born on October 8, 1914 near Carpenter. She was the oldest child of Jules and Alida Duponcheele. She married George Lambaere on July 24, 1934 at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. They raised their family of four on a farm near St. Ansgar. They retired to St. Ansgar in 1985.

Julia enjoyed farming, traveling, flowers, vacationing with family in Alexandria, Minnesota, cooking for friends, the Democratic party, dancing and helping those in need. She was very active in her Church. Julia became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar in 1997 and the Faith Home in 2001.

Julia will be missed by her children, Joanne (Tom) Wilder of Mason City, George (Terri) Lambaere of Owatonna, Minnesota, Kathy (Russ) McNitt of Wyoming, Minnesota and Mary Lou Kennedy of Osage; grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Wilder, Matthew, Emily and John Lambaere, Craig, Mark and Jeff McNitt and David, John and Steven Kennedy; five great-grandchildren, Phillip, Christine, Taylor and Cassie McNitt and Olivia Kennedy; and sister-in-law, Erma Duponcheele of Stacyville.

Julia was preceded in death by her husband, George who passed away in 2000; her parents, Alida and Jules; her sisters, Martha Duponcheele and Laura Vervaecke; and brother, Robert Duponcheele.

Marie E. "Mim" Johnson

October 15, 2003

Marie E. "Mim" Johnson, age 82, died on Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 11, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. The Reverend Dennis Hanson and Reverend Roy Ott officiated. Interment was in the Rock Creek Cemetery, rural Osage.

Marie was born on January 2, 1921 in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, the daughter of Ole J. and Marie (Beagles) Johnson. She was educated in the Dudley Country School and was confirmed in 1943 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage. She was employed at The Pantry and the Snack Shop in Osage.

Marie was a member of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church and her circle in Osage. She made afghans for all her nieces and nephews and their children. One of Marie's favorite things to do was to work on puzzles.

Marie's parents preceded her in death.

Her survivors include two sisters, Olive (Raymond) Borchardt of Osage and Lola Brandau of St. Ansgar; one brother, Louis (Alice) Johnson of Rudd; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Eugene Ervin Schulze

October 22, 2003

Eugene Ervin Schulze, 79, of rural St. Ansgar, died on Saturday, October 11, 2003, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 16, at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Toeterville, with Rev. Dr. Elaine Siemsen officiating. Burial was in the St, Peter Cemetery, Toeterville.

Eugene was born the son of Ervin and Martha (Hofland) Schulze, on June 26, 1924 in Union Township, Mitchell County, Iowa. He attended schools in Mitchell County. He farmed his entire life. Eugene was an avid fisherman. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Toeterville and remained a faithful lifelong member. He married Evelyn Qualley of Lake Mills at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, on September 1, 1968.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Eugene is survived by a sister, Arlene Anderson of St. Ansgar; a niece, Connie Rosenberg of St. Ansgar; a nephew, Steve Anderson of Story City; three great-nephews; two great-nieces; and one uncle, Gene Hofland of St. Ansgar.

Larry Dean Jensen

October 15, 2003

Larry Dean Jensen, age 65, of Greenfield, Iowa, died at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, on Sunday, October 12, 2003.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 16, at the United Methodist Church in Greenfield, with Pastor John Crosswhite officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 15, from 12 noon until 8:00 p.m., at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield, with family visitation from 6-8:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Greenfield Cemetery at Greenfield. There will be full military graveside rites by the Greenfield American Legion Head-Endres Post No. 265 and VFW No. 5357.

Larry D. Jensen, was born on January 28, 1938 in Adair County, the son of Lyle and Bernice (Peters) Jensen. He attended and graduated from the Greenfield High School in 1956 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1962. He worked for the Hallett Construction Company throughout the Midwest. Larry was united in marriage to Phyllis Sturdy on November 26, 1967, at the United Methodist Church in Greenfield. In 1970, he began working for the Schildberg Construction Company until his retirement in 2000.

Larry was past president of the Adair County Historical Society and enjoyed history and doing genealogy. He was a member of the Greenfield American Legion. Larry was an avid sports fan, supporting the Greenfield Tigers in wrestling and football, along with NASCAR, the Chicago Bears and the Oklahoma Sooners. He loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. Larry was never shy and never knew a stranger. He enjoyed all the people he met at Bon's Bakehouse and the Nodaway Diner.

Preceding Larry in death were his parents; and wife, Phyllis on September 23, 1996.

His survivors include his son, Lyle (Stacey) Jensen and their children, Caitlin and Tyler of Osage; two daughters, C-Kay Jensen of Sioux City, Nebraska and Courtney (Zeke) Chafa and their daughter, Gracie of Greenfield; three aunts, Delphine Jensen of Greenfield, Velma Hamilton of Ames and Byrlee Jensen of Greenfield; two sisters-in-law, Mardelle Porter and Husband, Randall of Greenfield and Helen Jedlicka of Council Bluffs; and many other family and friends.

Arlene Bernice Johnsten

October 22, 2003

Arlene Bernice Johnsten, died of cancer on Monday, October 13, 2003, at the Peace Hospice at Great Falls.

A memorial service was held on Monday, October 20, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Falls, Montana. Burial will be at a later date in the Norway Cemetery, Norway, Iowa. Donations may be made to the Peace Hospice, Great Falls, Montana.

Arlene Johnsten, was born on November 17, 1907, on a farm near Norway, Iowa, to Dr. William and Maude Pirie. She graduated from high school in Springville, Iowa and graduated with an Elementary Education Degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school at Radcliffe, Iowa, where she met Carsten Johnsten, who was the school principal. They were married in 1933 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Their first son, Richard was also born in Norway, Iowa, where Carsten was then school superintendent. A second son, David was born in Waterloo, Iowa and died in infancy. Her husband, Carsten died in 1993.

Carsten and Arlene lived in Osage, from 1947 to 1977, where Carsten was superintendent for 25 years. Arlene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and witnessed her Christian Faith throughout her life.

Her survivors who were blessed by her life and will cherish her memory include a son, Richard and his wife, Margery; three grandchildren, Christina, Jennifer and Christian; a nephew, William Pirie; and a niece, Dee Ann Newman.

Anna M. Rosenberg

October 22, 2003

Anna M. Rosenberg, 95, of St. Ansgar, died on Wednesday, October 15, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 18, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood, Iowa.

Anna M. Rosenberg, was born on March 25, 1908, to John P. and Sina (Rasmussen) White. She was baptized and confirmed on April 13, 1924 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, by the Rev. C. Landdeck. She attended school at the country school west of Grafton. She graduated from High School in Grafton on May 20, 1926. She married George Rosenberg on May 1, 1927. Two sons were born to this union, Raymond and Russell. They farmed for many years on the Rosenberg home farm southwest of St. Ansgar.

After retiring from farming in 1955, they purchased a home in St. Ansgar. Anna then went to work at the Good Samaritan Center. Among many other duties, she operated Anna's Cafe. She owned rug looms and wove many, many rugs for family and friends. She did volunteer work at many churches and also the Good Samaritan Center. Anna had six sisters and brothers.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, George; son, Raymond, Sr.; and one grandson, Raymond, Jr.; brothers, Vern, Art and John Jr.; and three sisters, Mabel Paulsen, Nora Bruesewitz and Clara Kuehn.

She is survived by son, Russell Rosenberg, Sr. and wife, Kathryn of St. Ansgar; 11 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

Craig Leon Ensz

October 22, 2003

Craig Leon Ensz, 16, of Chester, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2003, from a motor vehicle accident near McIntire.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 23, at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite Church in McIntire. Burial will be in the Wayne Cemetery in rural McIntire. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday, from 4-8:00 p.m.

Craig was born on August 20, 1987, to Ronald and Karen Koehn Ensz in Glendale, Arizona.

His memories are cherished by his parents, Ron and Karen; two brothers, Randy and his wife, Sara of Chester and Duane, who is at home; maternal grandparents, Minister Leon and Rose Koehn of Chester; paternal grandparents, Deacon Ervin and Fern Ensz of El Mirage, Arizona, who are currently serving as missionaries in the Philippines; plus by a host of caring uncles, aunts, cousins and spiritual brothers and sisters.

Herbert Ferdinand Feldt

October 22, 2003

Herbert Ferdinand Feldt, 87, of St. Ansgar, died on Sunday, October 19, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 22, at 1:30 p.m., at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, with Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church.

Herbert Ferdinand Feldt, son of Gustave and Alma (Schmidt) Feldt was born on October 20, 1915 on a farm in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, Iowa. He was baptized on November 21, 1915 by Rev. Reinecke. His sponsors were Mrs. George Glassel, Ferdinand Feldt and Wilhelm Schmidt. He and his sister, Helen were confirmed together at the St. John's Lutheran Church in 1932 and he was a lifelong member of St. John's. He attended school in Carpenter. He lived and worked on the parental farm until 1965 and then worked for several area farmers while living in St. Ansgar. In 1970, he moved to Carpenter where he lived until 1997 when he moved to St. Ansgar.

He enjoyed fishing with friends up north, helping at the Senior Saints Center and playing cards. He moved to Worth Living in June 2001, the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in October 2001 and into the Good Samaritan Center in December 2002.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Peterson; brother, Wilmer (Barney); and brothers-in-law, Orvie Severson and Leland Ellingson.

He is survived by sisters, Agnes Severson of St. Ansgar and Irene Thompson and husband, Charles of Austin, Minnesota; brother, Arnold and wife, Joan of St. Ansgar; sister-in-law, Delores Feldt of St. Ansgar; brother-in-law, Fred Peterson of Albert Lea, Minnesota; 18 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to the St. John's Lutheran Church or the Senior Saints Center of St. Ansgar.

Leone Folsom Morrison

October 29, 2003

Leone Folsom Morrison, age 84, of Osage, died on Monday, October 20, 2003, at the Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 24, at the United Church of Christ in Osage, with Rev. Robert Melhorn officiating. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be directed to the United Church of Christ of Osage or to the Good Samaritan Home in St. Ansgar.

Leone was born on November 19, 1918 at Postville, Iowa, in Allamakee County, the daughter of Alonzo and Hazel (Harris) Folsom. She attended schools in Allamakee County until 1934 when she moved with her parents to Osage, Iowa. She graduated from the Orchard High School in 1936 and took post graduate work in the Osage School. She taught country school in Mitchell County, was active in Extension work in the county and was also a 4-H Leader. She was baptized at the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Osage for 69 years. Leone was active in the women's work of the church and held many offices of the church. She taught Sunday School for 20 years. She was also a member of Eastern Star since 1949 and worked with the Rainbow Girls for several years. She was a member of the Grand Cross of Colors of Rainbow and of the Wa Tan Ye Service Club. She married Max Morrison on October 21, 1937 in Mason City and they were the parents of 4 children, Larry, Murray (deceased), Judenne and Richard. They farmed for forty years and retired in Osage in 1979.

Some of her many interests were enjoying her family, flower gardens, traveling, fishing and having a cup of coffee with friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Murray Morrison; a grandson, David Todd Morrison; and two sisters, Mabel Simpson of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Grace Havlicek of Monona.

She is survived by her husband, Max Morrison; two sons, Larry and his wife, Cherie of Edmond, Oklahoma and Richard and his wife, DiDi of Oakland, Minnesota; daughter, Judenne Kocer of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

Howard D. Lovik

October 29, 2003

Howard D. Lovik, 76, of rural Orchard, died on Monday, October 27, 2003, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, October 30, at the St. John's Lutheran Church, south of Osage. The Reverend Christian F. Gugel will officiate. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd, with military graveside services by the Orchard American Legion Post 641. Visitation is from 4-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. Visitation will continue one hour before the services at the church on Thursday.

Howard Lovik, was born to Henry and Anna (Winterton) Lovik on October 1, 1927 at Forest City. He attended rural schools. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Howard was united in marriage to Belvia Wood Ring on August 7, 1976, at the St. John's Lutheran Church. To this union one son, Brian Henry was born. Howard retired from farming and worked in the foundry at Oliver in Charles City.

He belonged to the Orchard American Legion Post 641.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Howard's survivors include his wife, Belvia of Orchard; one son, Brian Lovik and his wife, Lexia of Dawnson Springs, Kentucky; five step-children, Monty Ring and his wife, Twyla of Greene, Teresa Dorsey and her husband, Pat of Osage, Greg Ring of Orchard, Arlys May and her husband, Russ of Kasson, Minnesota and Bruce Ring and his wife, Rita During of St. Paul, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clemons Lovik of Mitchell, Harley Lovik of Sherrill, Iowa and Wayne Lovik of Floyd; two sisters, Ethel Holcomb of Des Moines and Dorothy Harris of Floyd; and many nieces and nephews.

Caroline A. Street

November 12, 2003

Caroline A. Street, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2003, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 31, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Interment was in the Osage Cemetery.

Caroline was born on August 27, 1921 near Scandia, Kansas, the daughter of William and Mabel (Rasmussen) Street. She grew to womanhood in the Scandia community. She attended elementary school in the Pleasantvale (Parkhill) School in Republic County, Kansas. She went three years to the Scandia High School and then went to Republic City School her senior year to get Normal Training. After graduation in 1939, she taught in the Ash Grove School for 2 years. She then moved to Osage, Iowa, with her parents and brothers. That fall, she returned to Republic County and taught in the Center School near Courtland, Kansas. In the spring, she returned to Mitchell County, Iowa and taught 4 years at the Mount Hope School, 1 year at Wardell, 4 years in Burr Oak and 4 years at Rock rural schools.

She received her 2 year elementary degree from Luther College and her BA degree from Upper Iowa University. In 1957, she went to McIntire, Iowa and taught there until reorganization. She then went to Riceville for 26 years until retirement in 1986.

She attended church, Sunday School, and League in the Methodist Church in Scandia, Kansas. She joined the First United Methodist Church in Osage with her family in 1945, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Wa Tan Ye and the retired teachers.

She was preceded in death by her father, William in 1954; her mother, Mabel in 1973; and two brothers, Irvin in 1994 and Alfred in 1995.

Caroline is survived by two nieces, Kathleen (Mark) Gauger of Forest City and Linda (Rodney) Dishman of Charles City; three nephews, Thomas (Mary) Street of Osage, Patrick (Kristi) Street of Morgantown, Kentucky and Roy (Deb) Street of Stacyville.
