Ralph P. Brumm

March 5, 2003

Ralph P. Brumm, 78, of Osage, died on Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 4, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. The Reverend Philip Recker officiated. Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage.

Ralph Brumm, was born on April 11, 1924 in Stacyville, the son of Joseph and Sophia (Halbach) Brumm. He was educated and graduated from the Visitation High School in Stacyville in 1941. Ralph was united in marriage to Evelyn May on August 7, 1948, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, Iowa. They farmed near Stacyville until 1954 when they moved to a farm west of Osage, farming there until 1963.

Ralph was a co-owner and operator of Brumm & Canny Livestock until 1971. He then drove semi for Mitchell Transport in Mason City for 15 years. In retirement he was custodian for the Home Trust and Savings Bank in Osage.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Martha Weber, Genevieve Lindberg, Mary Ann Kleespies and Adelaide Brumm; and brothers, Edward, Herbert and Albert.

His survivors include his wife, Evelyn Brumm of Osage; three sons, Michael (Janet) Brumm of Wayne, Nebraska, Loren (Margaret) Brumm of Iowa City and Tom (Heather) Brumm of Ames; seven daughters, Lois (Rick) Przywojski of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Cheryl Davis of Des Moines, Mary (Michael) Hughes of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, Susan (Philippe) Fortin of Seekonk, Massachusetts, Jeri (Bryan) Wheeler of Savage, Minnesota, Barbara (Larry) Vareberg of Rochester, Minnesota and Janelle (David) Kerr of Des Moines; two brothers, Clarence Brumm of Osage and Othmar Brumm of Stacyville; one sister, Joan Dworschak of Champaign, Illinois; and 23 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sacred Heart School in Osage or to Catholic Charities.

Rachel Hurst

March 5, 2003

Graveside services for Rachel Hurst, stillborn daughter of Abraham and Fern Hurst of Riceville, were held on Monday, March 3, 2003, at the South Osage Mennonite Church, rural Osage.

Rachel was stillborn at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Henry William Bruggeman

March 12, 2003

Henry "Hank" William Bruggeman, 86, died on Monday, March 3, 2003, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center, Osage, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 8, at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Toeterville, Iowa. The Reverend Dr. Elaine Siemsen and Reverend Barbara Finley-Shea officiated. Burial was in the St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Toeterville. Military rites were provided by the Walter T. Enneberg Post No. 358 of the American legion, St. Ansgar.

Henry "Hank" William Bruggeman, was born on September 19, 1916 at St. Ansgar, Iowa, to William H. and Martha (Glienke) Bruggeman. He farmed all his life raising cattle, sheep, hogs and horses. There were always big gardens on the farm. He enjoyed fishing, especially for bullheads at Morristown. He looked forward to holidays and birthdays, as well as the St. Peter Lutheran fish fry. Hank enjoyed spoiling and spending time with the grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Ernest; and sister, Alma.

He is survived by grandchildren, Renae and Duane Henaman, Zebadiah Henaman, Zacharian and Cathy Henaman, Heather and Willi Clennon; great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Logan, Ashley and Taylor; special friends, Nick Tolan, Harm and Lola Loverink, Dean Duenow, Lawrence Bruggeman, Jr., Robert Gleason, Karla Schaefer, Glen Buntrock and Dean Buntrock.

Sonia Ann Bates

March 12, 2003

Sonia Ann Bates, age 64, of Osage, died on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 10, at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. Reverend Dennis Hanson and Reverend Roy Ott officiated. Interment was in the Osage Cemetery.

Sonia Ann Bates, was born on August 28, 1938 in Osage, the daughter of Martin and Julia (Gunderson) Hultman. Her mother died when Sonia was nine years old and she went to live with Amy Walling of Orchard. She graduated in 1956 from the Orchard High School. Sonia was united in marriage on December 22, 1956 to Gordon Bates at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage.

They lived in Burchinal for 10 years before moving to a farm southwest of Osage, where she spent the remainder of her life. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage.

Preceding Sonia in death were her mother and father; and a brother, Don Cox.

Her survivors include her husband, Gordon of Osage; one daughter, Julie Bierbrodt and husband, Sterling of Osage and their children, Brandie, Douglas, Victoria and Jesse; one son, Todd Bates and Sherry of Osage and children, Ashley, Ethan, Jacob, Anna and Rebecca; one great-grandchild, Hannah; one sister, Gloria Thompson of Oregon; and many cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Germaine Mullenbach

March 12, 2003

Germaine Mullenbach, 78, of Ames, Iowa, died at the Mary Greeley Medical Center, on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, of a heart attack.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 8, at the St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames. Father Terry Rassmussen presided. Burial was in the St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Gilbert, Iowa. Memorial Contributions may be made to the St. Cecilia Catholic Church.

Germaine Mullenbach, was born on March 11, 1924 in Stacyville, Iowa, to Fred and Bertha (Huemann) Mullenbach. He was raised in Osage and was a self-employed mason for over 35 years in Osage.

He was married to Helen Uthe on April 22, 1957, at the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Gilbert, Iowa and was a member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church and Moose Lodge #520. They later resided in Ames and he was employed by Ames Lab from 1981-1989 when he retired. He enjoyed gardening and yard work.

Preceding Germaine in death were his parents' four brothers; and one sister.

His survivors include his wife, Helen Mullenbach of Ames; sons, Bob Mullenbach of Grimes, Iowa and Jon (Suzanne) Mullenbach of Gilbert, Iowa; daughter, Marjorie (Scott) Anfinson of Rochester, Minnesota; five grandchildren; and a brother, LaVerne Mullenbach of Osage, Iowa.

Gerald W. Adams

March 19, 2003

Gerald W. Adams, age 63, of Osage and formerly of Stacyville, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 17, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with Father Mark Reasoner officiating. Interment was in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Stacyville.

Gerald W. Adams, was born on May 10, 1939 in Stacyville, the son of Benedict F. and Caroline (Weber) Adams. He attended and graduated from the Visitation School in Stacyville. After graduation, he worked with his father in the family business, Adams Motor Company, in Stacyville and took ownership of the business when his father retired in 1967. Gerald closed the car dealership in the mid 1980s and he and his brother, Melvin converted the space to a four-lane bowling alley called Imperial Lanes. Gerald ran that business from 1987 until he sold it in 1994.

He then moved to Osage and worked at Cooper's Osage Chrysler as a bookkeeper. He retired last year and had enjoyed retirement with his family and friends.

Gerald was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Austin Eagles Club. As an Eagles member Gerald hosted many fund raising events in Stacyville as part of their annual Cancer Telethon.

Gerald opened his home as a host to two foreign exchange students from Bulgaria. Mitko Mitev graduated from the Osage High School and has returned to Bulgaria. Miroslav Jelev graduated from NIACC and is currently attending college in Pennsylvania. Because of Miro's involvement in the boxing club of Rudd, Gerald became involved with the Hummel Boxing Club of Rudd. He also enjoyed going out to eat with friends, spending time with family and chatting on-line.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Raymond and Melvin.

He is survived by one sister-in-law, Jennie Adams of Osage; five nieces, Pat (John) Fisher of Dale City, Virginia, Mar Adams of Osage, Colleen Upton of Garden Grove, California, Sue (Don) Weber of Stacyville and Liz (Rick) Stevens of Osage; one nephew, Mike Adams of Osage; eight great-nieces and nephews, and three great-great-nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth C. Popp

March 19, 2003

Elizabeth C. Popp, age 99, died on Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at the Faith Home in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 15, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with Reverend Philip Recker officiating. Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage.

Elizabeth Popp, was born on January 18, 1904 near Osage, the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Hovel) Popp. She contracted polio at the age of four and was unable to attend school. Her siblings home schooled Elizabeth. She made her home with John and Frances Popp until 1976, when she became a resident of the Faith Home. Family was important to her, and she was involved with three generations of the John Popp family.

Elizabeth was a lifelong member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Guild. Prayer and the Rosary were the foundations of her life. She enjoyed crocheting doilies, embroidery and music, playing the harmonica and keyboard.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Orvin and John; four sisters, Mary Pelleymounter, Edith Meitner, Anna Meitner and Rose Ginder; and nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth is survived by 20 nieces and nephews.

Robert Buckingham

March 19, 2003

Robert Buckingham, 77, of Stacyville, Iowa, died on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, Stacyville.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 18, at the Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville. Father Mark Reasoner officiated. Burial was in the Visitation Cemetery. Military honors were given by the Hale Penney Fuller Post #569 of the American Legion.

Robert was born on January 1, 1926 in Albia, Iowa, to Howard and Amanda (McBride) Buckingham. He served in the United States Army as a tank driver during the Korean Conflict. Robert married Phyllis Durben on December 30, 1952 at the Queen of Angels Parsonage in Austin, Minnesota. He liked working on and building roads, going from job to job in a house trailer. Robert worked for Oliver in Charles City for many years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Robert's family always came first. The last two years were spent in the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Glenn and Jack.

His survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Stacyville; five sons, David (Anne) of Casper, Wyoming, John (Vicki) of Byron, Minnesota, Joe of Granby, Colorado, Tim (Laura) of Byron, Minnesota and Richard of Rochester, Minnesota; five grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mary Buckingham of Albia, Iowa and Dorothy Buckingham of Ottumwa, Iowa.

Keith Irwin Funk

March 19, 2003

Keith Irwin Funk, age 79, of Osage, died on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at his home, from renal cell cancer.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 18, at the United Church of Christ in Osage. Rev. Robert Melhorn officiated. Interment was in the Osage Cemetery.

Keith was born on December 12, 1923 in Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Roy and Mabel (Olson) Funk. He attended the rural Burr Oak #3 School and graduated from the Osage High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army in 1945 and 1946. On August 13, 1947, he married Helen Marie Perkins of Lyle, Minnesota, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church. Keith worked at the St. Ansgar REA and he was an Austin, Minnesota City Firefighter for 21 years.

Upon retirement in 1977 he built their home on a small farm in the Osage area where Keith enjoyed planting trees and gardening.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Keith's survivors include his wife, Helen Funk of Osage; two daughters, Marlene (Norman) Hopkins of Rochester, Minnesota and Margaret (Loren) Brumm of Iowa City; three granddaughters; one grandson; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Lavern "Bud" (Shirley) Funk of Osage; one sister, Lavonne (Keith) Morse of Mason City; mother-in-law, Selma Perkins of St. Ansgar; one brother-in-law, John (Ludmilla) Perkins of Cresco; and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn H. Brumm

March 19, 2003

Evelyn H. Brumm, age 83, of Stacyville, died on Sunday, March 16, 2003, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, March 19, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with Father Mark Reasoner officiating. Interment was in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Stacyville.

Evelyn Brumm, was born on September 19, 1919 in Stacyville, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Thome) Mueller. She was baptized at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, where she also attended school. Evelyn was united in marriage to Urban L. Brumm on February 10, 1942 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer. After their marriage they farmed together in the Stacyville area, retiring in 1984 and moved from their farm into Stacyville in 1989.

Evelyn enjoyed playing cards, bowling, bingo and crocheting afghans. She was a member of the Visitation Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and the National Catholic Order of Foresters.

Preceding Evelyn in death were her parents; sister, Viola; and two brothers, Marvin and John.

She is survived by her loving husband, Urban Brumm of Stacyville; five children, Elaine (James) Havlovic of Stacyville, Kenneth (Judy) Brumm of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Vernon Brumm of Mason City, Audrey (Roy) Stefan of Cedar Falls and Jean Brumm of Osage; five sisters, Cyrilla Rockers and Maxine Halbach, both of Austin, Minnesota, Mary Ann (Jerry) Mullenbach of Adams, Minnesota, Irene (Herbert) Hemann and Anita Adams, both of Stacyville; four brothers, Emil (Margaret) Mueller of Mesa, Arizona, Elmer (Mary) Mueller and Delphin (Mary Ann) Mueller, both of Austin, Minnesota and Lavern (Gloria) Mueller of Osage; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dale Lawrence Irvin

March 26, 2003

Dale Lawrence Irvin, age 84, of Riceville, Iowa, passed away at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Hospital in Osage, Iowa, on Monday, March 17, 2003.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 20, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville. The Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiated. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery, Riceville.

Dale was born on May 9, 1918 in rural Acme, Iowa, to Arthur Chester and Harriet Seavy Irvin. He attended rural schools in the Acme area and graduated from the Riceville High School in 1936. Dale joined his family in farming. He was united in marriage to Jean (Marr) Irvin on March 5, 1946, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville.

Dale enjoyed time spent with his family, camping and traveling. Dale worked as a sales representative to North Iowa Grain Equipment. He lived on the family farm until his retirement. In his retirement years he hauled livestock until 1997.

Preceding Dale in death were his parents; one brother, Adrian; and a sister, Lu Ann Saathoff.

His survivors include his wife, Jean of Riceville; two sons, Larry and his wife, Clare and Scott and his wife, Angie, all of Riceville; a daughter, Carol of Ankeny, Iowa; three grandsons, Jared of Riceville, Bryan of New Ulm, Minnesota and David of Riceville; one sister, Ione Stephens and her husband, Willis of Fairfax, Virginia; and nieces and nephews.

James Joseph Quinn

April 2, 2003

James Joseph Quinn, 68, died on Monday, March 17, 2003, in Arlington, Texas.

A Funeral Mass was held on Friday at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Arlington. Burial was in the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

James Joseph Quinn, was born on August 18, 1934 in Riceville, Iowa. He was a retired military hydraulic mechanic, a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Thomas and Marguerite Quinn; and a brother, Gerald Quinn.

Quinn's survivors include his wife, Clara Quinn; a son, Richard O. Arbuckle and wife, Theresa; daughter, Terri Butler and husband, Justin; sisters, Evelyn Blashill and Colleen Boyle; grandchildren, Cameron Burris, Jennifer Arbuckle, Richard Sean Arbuckle and Jonathan Arbuckle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Phyllis Eileen Barker

March 26, 2003

Phyllis Eileen Barker, age 75, of Little Cedar, died on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at the MCRHC-Hospice in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 21, at the United Methodist Church in Osage. The Reverend Jay Amundson and Reverend Karen Nichols Dungan officiated. Interment was in the Osage Cemetery.

Phyllis was born on August 16, 1927 in Hutchins, Iowa, to Dale and Marion (Francis) Thompson. She attended a country school in Sexton, Iowa, a school in Algona, Iowa and graduated from the Rudd High School in 1945. She graduated from the Pixie's Beauty School in Waterloo, Iowa. She worked at Hansen's Beauty Shop in Osage, before opening her own business, "Phyllis's Beauty Shop," in Osage which she ran for five years. Phyllis married Gregory Barker on July 15, 1951, at the United Methodist Church in Osage. They made their home south of Little Cedar.

Phyllis was a member of the Little Cedar United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of her church circle. She also was a member of the "Just A Mere Club."

Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents; and two brothers-in-law, Darrell Sletten and Charles Young.

Her survivors include her husband, Gregory Barker of Little Cedar; daughter, Linda (Neil) Schroeder of St. Ansgar; three sons, Galen (Audrey) Barker, Gorden (Kim) Barker and Glen (Carrie) Barker, all of Osage; nine grandchildren, Martin (Allison) Schroeder of Scottsdale, Arizona, Stacy Schroeder of Ames, Garrett, Brittany, Dustin, Colin, Brandon, Brett and Breana Barker, all of Osage; a sister, Shirley Sletten of Osage; two brothers, Dean (Irene) Thompson of Osage and Marvin (Pat) Thompson of Mason City; one brother-in-law, Dean (Charlotte) Barker of Osage; one sister-in-law, Helen Young of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.

Ellen Ruhde

March 26, 2003

Ellen Ruhde, age 33, of Osage, died on Thursday, March 20, 2003, of cardiac failure, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 24, at the United Church of Christ in Osage, where she was a member. Reverend Robert Melhorn officiated. Interment was at Manilla, Iowa, on Tuesday, March 25.

Ellen was born on February 19, 1970 at Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Don and Jan (Pettigrew) Ruhde. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1988 and from the University of Northern Iowa in 1993. She was united in marriage to David Kutz on September 3, 1994 in Iowa Falls. Ellen taught Spanish and English at the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne High School and at the Osage High School. She also coached speech activities and was a sponsor of the National Honor Society.

Ellen was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma women teachers society, PEO and the Osage Education Association. She enjoyed school activities, stamping, scrapbooking, collecting and corresponding with family and friends.

Ellen's survivors include her husband, David Kutz of Osage; parents, Don and Jan Ruhde of Iowa Falls; sister, Erin Peterson and husband, Jason of Des Moines; nephew, Brice Peterson; parents-in-law, Don and Julie Kutz of Clare; brothers-in-law, Keith Kutz and wife, Jennifer of Atoka, Tennessee and Phil Kutz and wife, June of Jacksonville, Florida; and four nephews, Michael, Thomas, Dakota and Matthew.

Germaine Ann Michels

April 2, 2003

Germaine Ann Michels, age 65, died on Friday, March 21, 2003, at the Monterey Pines Skilled Nursing Facility, Monterey, California.

Private family services will be held following cremation under the direction of The Paul Mortuary. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meyer, Iowa.

A native of Meyer, Iowa, Germaine was born on August 8, 1937 and had made her home in Pacific Grove and Marina, California, for the past 25 years coming from San Francisco. Ms. Michels was employed as a lab technician at the Lawrence Livermore Labs for 25 years.

She was an active volunteer with Handicapables while living in San Francisco, enjoyed sketching, painting and was a music lover.

Her survivors include her brothers, Leo Michels of Des Moines and Bob Michels of Sauk Centre, Minnesota; her sisters, Joan Hemann of Osage, Iowa, Ann Marsolek of Lakewood, Colorado, Rose Bock of Des Moines, Iowa and Jean Brandt of Northfield, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

Contributions are suggested to the Carmelite Monastery, Carmel, California.

Carol R. Nemgar

April 2, 2003

Carol R. Nemgar, 70, of Fayal Township, died on Sunday, March 23, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, at the Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home Chapel in Eveleth. The Reverend Susan Faunce-Zimmnerman of the Community United Church of Christ officiated. Interment was in the Eveleth Cemetery.

Carol Nemgar, was born in Fairfield, Iowa, on October 31, 1932 to Ralph and Mildred (Freshwater) Maxwell. She graduated from the Fairfield High School, received her Bachelor's Degree from Parson's College in Fairfield and her Master's Degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She had been an English teacher and counselor at the Biwabik High School. She was married to Fred "Fritz" Nemgar on July 28, 1979.

Preceding Carol in death were her husband, Fred "Fritz" in 1983; her brother, Alan Maxwell in 2002; and her parents.

Her survivors include sisters-in-law, Shirley Maxwell of Osage, Iowa and Marianne (Bud) Vlaisavljevich of Eveleth; nieces, Susan Maxwell, Shari (Jay) Wells, Cynthia (Tracy) Johnson and Nancy Vlaisavljevich; nephew, Robert (Vicki) Vlaisavljevich; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Harold Marlin Wigant

Harold Marlin Wigant, age 71, of Osage, died on Monday, March 24, 2003, at the Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

Military graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., at the Osage Cemetery on Saturday, April 26, 2003.

Harold was born on December 6, 1931 in Stacyville, Iowa, to William and Maude (Gwin) Wigant. He attended the Stacyville Public School through the 8th grade and then moved to Austin, Minnesota. Harold joined the U.S. Army on March 6, 1951 at the age of 19. On the 1st of August, he got his orders. It was then that he joined the 7th Cavalry Regiment Company I (it was General Custer's old outfit the "Garry Owen" Regiment.) On November 10, 1951, he was wounded by a mortar round and a shrapnel hit his left forearm. While in the Army, Harold was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, W/2 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Metal, National Defense Service Metal and the Purple Heart. He was also authorized the Republic of Korea Presidential United Citation Badge. He was honorably discharged from the Army on the 6th day of March 1954.

After serving in the Army, he worked in Waterloo until 1966. He then drove truck over the road until he retired in Portland, Oregon in 1994. In the year 2000, Harold moved back to Iowa and lived in Osage. He enjoyed the time spent with his nieces and nephews and having connections with old army buddies and school friends from years ago.

Preceding him in death were his parents; seven brothers, Samuel, Edward, Dean, Ervan, Orville, William and Louis; and his sister, Mary.

Those that survive him include his brothers, Raymond W. Wigant and his wife, Catherine of Austin, Minnesota, Vern R. Wigant Sr. and his wife, Jeannette of Canby, Oregon and Robert K. Wigant and his wife, LaVona of Salem, Oregon; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Harold Bauer

April 2, 2003

Harold Bauer, 85, of Riceville, died on Thursday, March 27, 2003, at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 29, at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville, Iowa. The Reverend Michael Parris officiated. Burial was in the Wayne Cemetery in rural McIntire, Iowa. Military honors were conducted by the Roy Gue Post of Riceville.

Harold Bauer, the son of Carl and Orpha Philamalee Bauer was born on January 4, 1918 in Loretta, Nebraska. He was united in marriage to Clarice DeMaris on June 25, 1942 in Mason City, Iowa. He served in the Army during World War II and was a retired farmer. Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, especially his tomato plants.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harvey; two sisters, Alice and Lucille; and one great-grandson, Devan Winfield.

His survivors include his wife, Clarice Bauer of Riceville; two sons, Kenny Bauer and his wife, Velma of LeRoy, Minnesota and John Bauer and his wife, Robin of Riceville, Iowa; two daughters, Jeanie and her husband, Lee Foster of Riceville and Linda and her husband, Leu Winfield of LeRoy, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and his mother-in-law, Agnes DeMaris of Riceville, Iowa.

Daniel Jay Smith

April 9, 2003

Daniel Jay Smith, age 55, of Parkdale, Oregon, died on Friday, March 28, 2003, at the Hood River Care Center.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Anderson's Tribute Center.

Daniel Smith, was born on November 21, 1947 in Mason City, Iowa, to Paul and Rita (Koran) Smith. He grew up and attended school in Mason City and then attended the DeVry Technical School in Chicago, Illinois. He then moved to Parkdale, Oregon in 1977.

Dan enjoyed fishing, hunting, photography and practical jokes and cats. Dan had a small business crafting hunting knives. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying and anything having to do with planes.

His survivors include his mother, Rita Smith of Osage, Iowa; two sisters, Linda Viani and her husband, Joe of Penrose, Colorado and Jean Arndt and her husband, Gerald of Osage; nephew, David Viani of Parker, Colorado; and nieces, Leslie Busing of Windsor, Colorado and Gina Miklas of Omaha, Nebraska.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Gorge, Hood River, Oregon.

Charles R. Hungerford

April 2, 2003

Charles R. "Charlie" Hungerford, age 79, of Osage, died on Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center Hospice Unit in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 1, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Reverend Philip Recker officiated. Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage, with military graveside services conducted by the Osage American Legion Post 278.

Charles Hungerford, was born on March 5, 1924 in Osage, the son of Roy and Mary (Schloff) Hungerford. He graduated from the Osage High School in 1941. Charlie served with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific during WW II. After his medical discharge from the Marines in 1943, Charlie attended Iowa State University in Ames. Later he graduated from the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Charlie was united in marriage to Neva Fuhrman on February 14, 1952, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They made their home in Osage.

He was a postal carrier in Osage for 28 years, retiring in 1979. He enjoyed farming, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, fishing and being with his children and grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Jean Hungerford.

His survivors include his wife, Neva Hungerford of Osage; three sons, Tim Hungerford and friend, Lisa of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Mark Hungerford and his wife, Cyndi of West Burlington, Iowa and Todd Hungerford and his wife, Tina of Sierra Vista, Arizona; two daughters, Ann Kienzle and friend, Philip of Riceville and Mary Mackelprang of Tucson, Arizona; brother, Jim Hungerford and his wife, Wilma of Osage; sister, Betty DeMar of Bloomington, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Nikki, Jared and Gavin Hungerford, Shane and Samantha Mackelprang; and two step-grandchildren, Travis and Mandy Dodd.

Sidney Stott

April 9, 2003

Sidney Stott, age 76, of Mesa, Arizona, died on Monday, March 31, 2003, of heart failure.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 3, at the Apache Wells Community Church. His body was cremated and interment will be held at a later date in Mesa. A memorial service was also held on Wednesday, April 9, at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, Iowa, with visiting with the family at 9:00 a.m., followed by the celebration service at 10:00 a.m.

Sidney Stott, was born in Mason City, Iowa, on June 10, 1926, the son of Sidney Stott, Sr. and Avis Wineman. He graduated from the Mason City High School. He was married to Shirley Leaman on January 5, 1946 and had a wonderful 57 years of marriage. He served in the Army during World War II.

After his military service, he attended and received his Masters Degree from Iowa State Teachers College in 1951. He taught instrumental music at the Cal Community Schools before moving to Osage, where he retired after 37 years of teaching. His love for music and his students was well known. His students were known as "Sid's Kids" for many years and he touched many lives.

Sidney belonged to the American Legion, Rotary International and was Past President of the Iowa Bandmasters Association. He served as church organist for the United Methodist Church in Osage for many years. He continued his passion for music in recent years by providing keyboard music for many community functions and parties. After his retirement from teaching, Sid and Shirley decided to give up the cold winters of Iowa and move to sunny Arizona where they have resided the past seven years.

Sid's survivors include his wife, Shirley of Mesa; two sons, Thomas and his wife, Karen of Bettendorf and Stephen and his wife, Deanna of Omaha; a daughter, Shelley Grimm and her husband, Robert of New Haven; five grandchildren, David Stott and wife, Samantha of Omaha, Jennifer Stott of Waukee, Michael Stott and his wife, Angie of Omaha, Rebecca Stott of Urbandale and Jackie Muller and her husband, Justin of Osage; three great-grandchildren, Samuel Stott, Peter Charles and Hayleigh Charles, all of Omaha; and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Nettleton and her husband, Terry of Mason City.

Gaylord Torney

April 9, 2003

Gaylord Torney, age 72, of Riceville, died at his home on Monday, March 31, 2003.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 3, at the Conway Funeral Home and burial was in the Riverside Cemetery, both in Riceville. Reverend Dan Christiansen officiated. Military rites were conducted by the Roy Gue Post #244 at the cemetery.

Gaylord Torney, was born on April 3, 1930 in Riceville, Iowa, the son of Glendon G. and Mary (Buttolph) Torney. He attended and graduated from the Riceville High School. Following his schooling, he moved to Waterloo and began working as a wiring machine operator at the Rath Packing Co. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo, where he was united in marriage to Marilyn Wilson on August 26, 1951. On September 7, 1951, he was inducted into the United States Army and served until his honorable discharge on August 20, 1953. Following his discharge from the Army, they lived in Waterloo. In 1963, they bought the Kakac Store in Saratoga and in 1966 he started working for Howard County as a maintainer operator, retiring in 1992.

Gaylord was a member of the American Legion, Roy Gue Post in Riceville. He liked to fish, play cards, go to the casinos and spend time with his daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On January 12, 1989, Marilyn died and on September 15, 1990, he was united in marriage to Doloris Brockney at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Marilyn; one great-grandson, Austin; and one brother, Ronald Torney.

Gaylord is survived by his wife, Doloris; one daughter, Debbie Smith and her husband, Larry of Riceville: four stepchildren, Roger, Rick, Jerry and Sandra Brockney; five grandchildren, Lisa, Shannon, Jeremy, Jill and Robin; eight step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gary Torney of Riceville, Iowa.
