Alden Girl Dies in Crash Near Franklin County Line

May 4, 2011

A car accident May 3 at an uncontrolled intersection of Hardin Street and Dogwood (or C) Avenue, between two Alden residents left one dead and one injured, according to the Iowa State Patrol crash report.

Around 7:40 a.m., Victoria Westfall, 17, of Alden, was driving a 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix eastbound on Hardin Street and Marlo White, 57, of Alden, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Dogwood Avenue. Both were wearing shoulder and lap seatbelts.

The intersection is uncontrolled for all but northbound traffic on Dogwood, which has a stop sign. Dogwood is a gravel road coming south to Hardin Road from Franklin County. Both vehicles entered the intersection. Traffic northbound, or coming from the south, has a stop sign, according to the detailed patrol report.

The White vehicle collided into the driver's side of the Westfall vehicle. An airbag deployed in front of White, in the 2002 Silverado. He remained in the vehicle. There was no airbag in the Grand Prix Westfall was driving. Due to the severity of the damage to the Grand Prix, Westfall was thrown from the vehicle despite seatbelt use, the report said. She was air-lifted to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines and died that day.

Alden Ambulance crews took White to the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. The Franklin and Hardin county sheriff's departments assisted. The accident remains under investigation.

Victoria Westfall was a student at the Iowa Falls-Alden High School.
