CECELIA (Cec) MCKONE

Cecelia (Cec) McKone, 91, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 at the Parkview Care Center in Northfield, Minn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 North Elm Street, Cresco, with Father Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the funeral home.

Cecelia Anna Wessels was born in Bancroft, on March 21, 1922, the daughter of John and Barbara Wessels. She also lived in Eagle Grove, and Pocahontas, where she graduated from high school in 1940. Cec spent the war years in New Hampton working in a Medical Clinic.

Cec married Nehl J. McKone in New Hampton, on Nov. 17, 1947. Cec and Nehl then moved to Cresco, where they spent their life. They had 5 children: Jim, Tom, Mark, Mary and John.

When most of the children had left home in 1975, Cec started a business career as the owner of the Cresco Davis Paint Store. She was very involved in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church including holding various offices in the Altar Society, and was one of the first women Eucharistic Ministers in the parish. Cec enjoyed bridge, crossword puzzles, golf, family activities, and was active in the bowling league.

She is survived by her children and their families: Jim (fiancé Aleta Alden McCann), his children Ryan (wife Jenn Cammarano) and Katie (husband Andy McDonald); Tom (wife Virginia), children Justin and Stephen; Mark; Mary (husband John Halstvedt) twin sons Scott and Kyle; and John (wife Amy Oriani) children Christopher and Ben. She is also survived by her sister Rosemary Wren.

Cec was preceded in death by her parents, husband Nehl, her sisters Eileen (Sister Elsa), Dorothy Morgan, Francis Mandot, and brothers Larry and Jack (Father Cletus), and Don Wessels.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or Notre Dame Parish in Cresco.


 

L. EUGENE NELSON

L. Eugene Nelson, age 83 of Fredericksburg, Iowa died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at his home.

Memorial services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Fredericksburg with Rev. Mike Christie officiating.

Gene was born February 28, 1930, in St. Croix, Wisconsin, the younger of two children of Leon and Flora (Smith) Nelson. After graduating from high school in Glenwood City, Wisconsin, Gene joined the U.S. Army. He then attended the University of Wisconsin before moving to Fredericksburg in 1952, where he met his future wife Grace Upham on November 11, 1956. They became the first couple to be married in the (new) United Methodist Church. To this union were born a son, Keith, and a daughter, Lynn. Gene worked for the United States Postal Service for 37 years, retiring in 1997. Stamp collecting was a special hobby.

Gene, Grace and their children traveled the United States widely, visiting 47 states. Gene and Grace visited the remaining three states, as well as all seven continents. They shared their love of travel with grandchildren Sandra and Zach Nelson through educational trips throughout the United States and Canada. They related stories of their travels to audiences at schools and other organizations.

Gene became a Charter Member of the local Lions Club in 1955. He held various offices in the club, and became District Governor in 1965. He received many awards for his service to the organization, including the Ralph A. Whitten Service Award; the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Service; and the Lions Club International Foundation Award.

A Master Gardener (ISU Extension) and dedicated volunteer, Gene was actively involved in numerous projects at local and state levels. Of special significance to him was the Butterfly Garden at Mattke Park. He conceived, created, and maintained the garden for several years.

At the state level, Gene was an Ambassador for Trees Forever. As a result of Gene’s yearly grant writing and planting of trees, Fredericksburg was named a Tree City, USA, for 11 consecutive years. In 1995, the Iowa Urban and Community Forestry Council named Gene the Iowa Outstanding Community Forestry Volunteer, for his dedication to the urban forests of his community and state. Locally, Gene was honored for numerous projects by the Fredericksburg Garden Club and by the Chickasaw County Conservation Board. Gene enjoyed working with Fredericksburg students teaching them about plants and nature. Additionally, he served on the Fredericksburg Town Council from 1975-1979, was a top blood donor in Chickasaw County with more than 9 gallons donated, and was a Charter Member of the Upper Iowa Audubon Society.

Gene greatly enjoyed sports. He was a Club Champion of the Fredericksburg Golf Course and President at the time of the Club’s opening. He was scorekeeper for home Fredericksburg High School basketball games for 28 years and timekeeper for FHS football games for 47 years. He was also a runner and a cyclist, completing RAGBRAI six times.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Grace; daughter Lynn, St. Louis Park, MN; son Keith (Lori), Mesa, AZ; grandchildren Sandra and Zachary, Gilbert, AZ; and sister Norma (Wallace) Hammerberg, Ellison Bay, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Flora (Smith) Nelson Dickie, and by his step-father, Albert Dickie.


DANIEL “Danny” D. JANSSEN

Daniel “Danny” D. Janssen, 63, of Nashua, passed away peacefully, Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at his home with his family by his side.

A graveside service for Danny Janssen will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Daniel Dean Janssen was born July 31, 1950 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, the son of Elmer and Dorothy (Rodamaker) Janssen.

Danny graduated from Nashua High School in 1969. On Dec. 6, 1969, he married the love of his life, Maria Elizabeth Leslie at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. From this union three sons were born: Daniel Dean II (Claudia) of Nashua, Jeremy Michael (Melissa) of Nashua and Shawn Everett of Nashua.

Danny is survived by his wife Maria; mother Dorothy; his three sons; his grandchildren: Brittany, Marissa, Kyle, Kristian, Mercedes, Logan and Ava; his great-grandchild, Jesse; a brother, Richard “Dick” Janssen; a sister, Linda (Morris) Dolph; step-mother, Marlene Janssen; mother-in-law, Mary Leslie; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Janssen and his grandparents.

Danny worked for Marigold Dairy in Charles City until he and Maria moved to Missouri. The short while they were in Missouri, he worked at Banquet Foods. When the family moved back to Iowa, he went to work at Kitchens of Sara Lee in New Hampton until the plant closure. During this time, he and his family also ran a dairy farm in rural Nashua. Farming was in Danny’s blood. He took great satisfaction in tilling the soil and seeing the fruits of his labor. Danny enjoyed stock car racing, tractors and was a lover of all animals (especially his dog Ellie). He was great at training horses. He and Maria spent many hours and miles trail riding all over Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota, Wyoming and anywhere they could ride, camp and have a good time with their friends and family. Danny also took pleasure in taking the boys boating when they were younger and then going boating with them when they became adults. Danny and Maria went on cruises, motor cycle trips and horseback riding trips with their good friends Chuck and Ginny Olsen. Danny was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. He would take the grandkids sledding and he and Maria took them on many trail rides. Danny was the happiest when he was spending time with his family and friends.

HELENE DILLER

Helene Diller age 93 of Nashua, died Saturday Oct. 12, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday Oct. 17, 2013 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua with Pastor James Mann presiding. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Helene Margaret Diller was born December 10, 1919, on a farm in rural Floyd County, near Colwell, the daughter of George (Bill) and Minnie (Hauser) Nicholson. When she was six weeks old she moved with her parents to a farm four miles west of Nashua making the move by bobsled. Helene attended rural school close to their Riverton Township farm through the eighth grade and was a 1937 graduate of the Nashua High School, receiving a normal training certificate. She then attended summer school at Wartburg College, Waverly, and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Helene taught in the rural school system in Floyd, Chickasaw and Butler Counties before and following her marriage to Daniel D. Diller on July 6, 1941 in Unionville, MO. To this union five children were born.

Before Dan entered the United States Navy, the couple lived a brief time in Davenport, making Nashua their home in 1943. In 1944, the couple moved to the Diller Farm south of Nashua to care for Dan’s parents and brother. Following Dan’s death in April of 1966, Helene returned to school in Calmar, and obtained her L.P.N. Degree.

Helene worked as an L.P.N. in nursing homes in Charles City, Waverly and New Hampton as well as the former St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton, before retiring in 1984.

Memberships include The Little Brown Church, a charter member of the Ralph W. Nicholson V.F.W. Aux. in Nashua, the Clarksville Rebekah Lodge where she held the prestigious award of “Degree of Chivalry” and the Nashua Garden Club. Helene had been a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader to the Jr. Girls Unit to the V.F.W. Post 6792.

Survivors include one son, James (Pat) Diller of Nashua; three daughters, Jolene (Jerry) Hendrickson of Washington, IN, Janet (Mike)Clark of Barrington, NH, Jayne (Terry) Dunlap of Shrewsbury, PA; five grandchildren, Sara Diller, Melissa Clark, Benjamin Clark, Matthew Dunlap and Julie Dunlap; one great-grandchild, Kay Ellen Clark; one brother, Richard (Glendora) Nicholson of Nashua; two nieces; two nephews; many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dan; an infant son, Jack William Diller in 1955; one brother, Ralph W. Nicholson and a great-grandchild, Jack Andrew Clark.


BOYD EDMUND BOLLMAN
March 4, 1941 - October 15, 2013

Boyd Edmund Bollman age 72 of Cresco, died Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at his home after a short battle with cancer.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2013, at the Heritage Events Center, 229 3rd Ave. West, in Cresco, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. prayer service.

Private family inurnment will take place at a later date at the Kendallville Eddy Cemetery.

Boyd Edmund Bollman was born March 4, 1941, on the family farm in rural Allamakee County, IA, the son of Beacher and Beulah (MCClintock) Bollman. He received his education in rural country schools. On October 12, 1963, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Lourdes, IA, he married the love of his life, Mary Hyke. To this union five children were born. The couple lived in the Cresco area their entire married lives. He will be remembered by his family for his building and repairing skills. He loved all his occupations throughout his life. Boyd's true passions were outdoor activities. He was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He and his wife, Mary, just celebrated their 50th Anniversary together on the Saturday preceding his death.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; three sons, Richard (Carol) Bollman, Ronald (Laura) Bollman, all of Cresco, Donald Bollman of La Crescent, MN; two daughters, Laura Bollman of Byron, MN, Lisa (Zach) Diersen of Solon, IA; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bonnie (LeRoy) Jones of Harpers Ferry, IA, Beverly Bollman of Silverton, OR.

He was preceded in death by his parents.


LULU F BULS
February 14, 1916 - October 13, 2013

Lulu Florence Buls, age 97 of Frederika, Iowa died Sunday October 13, 2013, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday October 19, 2013, at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg with Joel Franzen, Justin Franzen, Brett Franzen, Tyler Hartson, Trenton Hartson, Trey Hartson, Leonard Jarvis, Heath Annett and Dave Bormann serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Heather Van Heiden, Melissa Lacy, Jamie Beatty, Brittany McNeil, Brianna Drewelow, Shannon Wilson, Mandi Collins, Melissa Annett, Alisha Wiggins, Katie Saunders and Morgan Hartson.

Friends may greet the family 4 - 7 p.m. Friday at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg with further visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Lulu Florence Buls was born February 14, 1916, in a sod house in Ansley, NE, the daughter of Robert and Minnie (Clingerman) Coen. Lulu received her education by attending country school. She moved to Iowa at the age of 13. Prior to marriage, Lulu was a housekeeper and homemaker for many years. In 1935, she married Raymond Shannon and later divorced. She was the proud mother of one son and two daughters. After her divorce, she moved to Fredericksburg and worked at Ott & Forsman Produce and Barker’s Grocery Store. Lulu later married Alfred Buls on February 2, 1958. They made their home in Frederika, IA where she lived the rest of her life.

Lulu and Alfred enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and attending potluck dinners. Lulu was a long time member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Frederika, IA and belonged to the senior citizen group. She was a member of a “500” card playing club. Sh e loved watching Iowa Hawkeye basketball as well as solving Wheel of Fortune puzzles over the phone with her friend Grace. Lulu loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Lulu is survived by her son, Duane “Larry” Coen of Davenport; two daughters, LaVonne Hartson of Fredericksburg and Carol (Ray) Annett of Creswell, OR; one brother, Galen “Max” Coen of New Hampton; one sister, Janice (Bud) Theilen of Nashua; one brother in law, Ivan Johannaber of Fredericksburg; ten grandchildren; twenty one great-grandchildren; and sixteen great-great grandchildren with one on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lulu was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred; three sisters, Esther Lange, Gloria Johannaber, and Vivian Coen; three brothers, Clyde, Paul and Dean Coen; one son-in-law, James Hartson; two grandsons, Larry Coen and Mark Annett; two step sons, Clarence and John Shannon, and one step daughter, Allene Roeder.


JUANITA B. GOINGS
June 19, 1927 - October 17, 2013

Juanita B. Goings age 86 of Nashua, died Thursday, October 17, 2013, at the Linn Haven Rehab and Healthcare in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 25, 2013, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, with Pastor James Mann presiding. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua.

Friends may greet the family 4 – 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home - Olson Chapel in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Juanita Burnett Goings was born June 19, 1927, in rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of Fred and Nellie (Lovering) Jensen. She received her elementary education in country schools and was a 1944 graduate of the Nashua High School. She then attended Wartburg College in Waverly, and received a teaching certificate. She taught in the Jackson Country School and during an all-school reunion, met her future husband, Lewis Goings. On December 23, 1946, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua, she married Lewis Burdette Goings. To this union four children were born. Together the couple farmed their entire married lives in the Nashua area, having moved to their current location on Highway 346 in 1952.

She was a active member of the Bradford Homemakers Club and the Pythian Sisters. Juanita was a hostess for thousands of weddings held at The Little Brown Church.

Juanita is survived by her three sons, Richard (Barbara) Goings of Cedar Rapids, Ronald (Susan) Goings of Clifton Forge, VA and David Goings of Waterloo; one daughter, Lewine Goings-Boucher of Nashua; ten grandchildren, Julie (Eric) Perrot, John (Julie) Goings, Rachel (Jamie) Talbot, Joseph (Marin )Goings, Samuel Goings, Peter Goings, Kyle (Katie) Goings, Tyler (Amanda) Goings, Tilleen (Rick) Babcock and David Goings-Boucher; six great grandchildren; one sister, Mavis Madison of Tuscon, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.


NORMAN LARSON
January 6, 1938 - October 18, 2013

Norman Larson age 75 of West Union, formerly of Nashua, died Friday evening, Oct. 18, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Home in West Union.

Norman Duane Larson was born January 6, 1938, in Waterville, the son of Ingvold and Clara C. (Goeke) Larson. He received his education in rural country school near Waterville. On February 6, 1981, in Brownsville, Minn., he married Arlene Olafson. Norman was a 'jack-of-all-trades', having the ability to make and fix everything. He will be remembered by his sons for the great advise he gave them. He enjoyed time with his family, his dogs and working on cars. He spent many years working for the Marrow Salvage Co. in Rushford, Minn.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene; four sons, Rick Larson, Jeremy Larson, both of West Union, Scott (Bridget) Adam of Calmar, Duane (Beth) Adam of Waukon; one daughter, Pam Larson of Waukon; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Melvin Larson of Waukon, Larry (Joanne) Larson of Harpers Ferry.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Virgil Larson and one sister, Dolly Jurgeson.


JOSEPH FRANCIS DEUTSCH
June 24, 1951 - October 24, 2013

Joseph Francis Deutsch, age 62 of North English, died on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013 with Pastor Edwin Jordan officiating. Joseph Francis Deutsch was born on June 24, 1951 to Francis and Marie (Friedhof) Deutsch, New Hampton. He graduated from New Hampton High School and attended Iowa State University and the University of Iowa . On September 30, 1972, he married Margaret Hochstatter at St. Mary’s Church, New Hampton. To this union, 3 children were born. Joe and Margaret were later divorced. Joe met Linda Tippie in Parnell and they were together 31 years, marrying in April 2013. They made their home in the Parnell and Millersburg communities before moving to North English in 2004. Joe’s many talents included: woodworking, gardening, tree trimming, and painting He was generous with his talents and skills, and placed great value on sharing them with his friends, neighbors and community. Joe loved working on his computer, and enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, flea markets, camping and travel. He was a member of the Williamsburg Lions Club. 

He is survived by his wife, Linda Tippie-Deutsch, North English. 3 children, Curtis Deutsch (Amy Hughes), Seattle, Washington, Charis Deutsch, Portland, Oregon, and Ben Deutsch, Portland, Oregon, and 2 grandchildren, Zia and Silas Deutsch Hughes, Seattle, Washington. and siblings: Tom (Rosie) Deutsch, New Hampton, Bill Deutsch (Martha Davis), Decorah, Nancy Fanzen, New Hampton, and Neil (Pam) Deutsch, Urbandale. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and one great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Joseph donated his body to the University of Iowa for research.


ADAM EDWIN BAHLMANN
May 22, 1987 - September 23, 2013

Adam Edwin Bahlmann, age 26 of Waseca, Minn., died on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 at his home.

Born on May 22, 1987 in Waseca, Minnesota, he was the son of Rebecca Mueller and Bruce Bahlmann. He graduated from Waseca High School in 2006 and from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2011 with a B.S. Degree in Exercise Science. Following his schooling, Adam worked at Target in Owatonna for a year and was currently employed at Mediacom as a dispatcher. He also worked part-time doing lawn care for Gary Owens. Adam enjoyed physical activities including weight lifting, basketball, ultimate frisbee and all sports. He also enjoyed fantasy football and watching sports on TV. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waseca.

Adam is survived by his mother, Rebecca Mueller of Waseca; one brother, Immanuel (Victoria) Mueller of Nicollet; his father, Bruce Bahlmann of Owatonna; maternal grandmother, Anna Mae Bahlmann of Nashua; and aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Immanuel and Malena Mueller, paternal grandfather, Elmer Bahlmann, and cousins, Matthew and William Mueller.

If so desired, memorials are preferred to the Epilepsy Foundation.

LYLE GENE STREICH
June 20, 1948 - October 23, 2013

Lyle Gene Streich, age 65 of Kansas City, formerly of Elma, died on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013 at his home.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Father Steve Garner celebrating. Burial will be held at Howard Cemetery in Elma.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma with a 5 p.m. Scriptural Wake Service with a rosary immediately following. He was born on June 20, 1948 to Edwin and Blanche (Kutzbach) Streich at the Elma Hospital in Elma. Lyle graduated from Crestwood High School in 1966. He was united in marriage to Patricia (Enright) Streich on August 1, 1970 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes.

He was a leader in his community including two terms as the Mayor of Elma and President of the Howard County Conservation Board. He was a volunteer fire fighter, active in Jaycees and Elma Community Club. He was a member of the Elma Immaculate Conception Parish and served on the Parish Board. Lyle was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist. He was active in Scouting as a youth, earning his Eagle Scout award. He continued to be active as an adult serving on the local, district and council levels in the Winnebago Council. For his dedication and service, he was recognized as a Vigil Honor member in the Order of the Arrow, was presented the Silver Beaver and the St. George Catholic Scouting awards.

He was employed at Donaldson Company, Inc for 29 years and served as UAW Union President. In 2001, Lyle moved to Kansas City to be with his children and grandchildren where he was a parishioner at St. Gabriel Catholic Church and was employed at Walmart.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children, Brian (Marcy) Streich, Bridgette (Barry) Mueller, Robert (Callie) Streich, and Bradley (Staci) Streich all of Kansas City, Mo. and seven grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Edwin (1991); Blanche (1991) and his brother Robert Streich (1967).


ROGER D. BROOKINS

Roger D. Brookins, age 69, of Cresco, passed away Friday, Oct. 25, 2013 at home.

Visitation for Roger will be held Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013 from 3 until 7 p.m. at the Heritage Events Center, 229 West 3rd Ave., Cresco, 52136, Cresco. American Legion Post 605 of Protivin, will accord military rites at 7 p.m. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 North Elm Street, Cresco, Iowa 52136 is in charge of arrangements.

Roger Dean Brookins was born on Sept. 24, 1944 son of Robert and Isabell (Drewelow) Brookins in Chickasaw County. He worked at John Deere before joining the United States Army. On April 23rd, 1966, he married Elaine Clark in Decorah. Since retiring from active Dairy Farming, Roger still enjoyed working at the Cresco Sale Barn and Farmer’s Mill. Roger was a member of the American Legion Post 605 of Protivin, DHIA, and Howard County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed playing cards and scrabble, watching NASCAR, camping, and listening to polka music. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, and attending grandchildren’s sporting events and various activities.

Roger is survived by his wife, Elaine of Cresco, his children, Lucinda (Mike) Yslas of Colorado Springs, Co., Barry Brookins of Dyersville, Aaron Folkert of Mantorville, Minn., Elizabeth (Kip) Powers of Cresco, Hilory (Craig) Harding of Stockbridge, Ga., grandchildren, Kara Yslas, Adam and Avery Powers, Abigail and Kameron Folkert, Emma and Sarah Harding, step grandchildren, Kayleigh Hock, Jessica Yslas, Brittany and Dustin Shaw, step great grandchildren, Bentley Kidwell, Nolen and Aspen Nelson , Spencer, Alden and Lewis Shaw, and Cayden Yslas, his brothers, Art (Doris) of Chatfield, MN, and Joe (Georgiann) of Ellendale, MN, sisters, Valerie Pettit of Coralville, Judy Brookins of Platteville, Wisc., Joann (Ron Lectenburg) Brookins of Ionia, Alberta (John) Linneman of Mt. Hope, Wisc., and Bonnie Brookins of Washington, and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, Robert and Isabell, and his father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Martha Clark, preceded him.


MARGARET BENNING

Margaret Benning age 88 of Plainfield, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home-Olson Chapel in Nashua. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Friends may greet the family 4 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home - Olson Chapel, in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday. Online condolences for Margaret's family may be left at hugbackfuneralhome.com

Margaret Lenona Benning was born Dec. 2, 1924, in Lisbon, ND, the second of six children to Fred and Stella (Johnson) Lahman. Following high school, she and a girlfriend moved to Rochford, Ill., to work in a factory making firing pins during World War II. On March 10, 1949, at the United Methodist Church Parsonage in Plainfield, she married Edwin Benning. The couple farmed for 35 years near Plainfield and Margaret also worked at the Hartman Locker in Plainfield, Kay’s Restaurant in Nashua and the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Margaret loved to crochet and made many beautiful items throughout her life. She made bed-spreads, tablecloths and hundreds of butterflies. She also had a love for flowers and the Chicago Cubs.

Survivors include one son, Bill (Renee) Benning of Plainfield; three grandsons, Luke (Veronica) Benning of Chino Valley, Ariz., Scott Benning of Charles City, Levi Benning of Plainfield; five great-grandchildren, Nikki, Joshua, Ashleigh, Brooklyn and Kimberly; one sister, Dolores Van Damme of Marlette, MI; two brothers, Mick (Joan) Lahman of Bella Vista, Ariz., Fred (Marie) Lahman of Hines, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1984, one brother, Arnold Lahman and a sister, Jeanne Fraser.
