Doris Marcella Davis dies at 89

Doris Marcella Davis passed away at home with her son and daughter-in-law in Chisago City, Minn., on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012.

Doris was born on September 23, 1922 in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, the daughter of Mike Richard and Olga Amanda (Thram) Saathoff. She was married to Derold Lowell Noland, who passed away due to an accident, and Harry James Davis.

Doris resided in New Hampton, Iowa for 45 years before selling her home and moving to Chisago City, Minnesota. Her favorite pastimes included quilting and gardening (especially flowers). She made quilts for everyone she knew and loved.

Doris was an active member of Jehovah’s Witnesses since she was baptized on May 16, 1954. She was known to never have missed a religious meeting.

Survivors include her sons, Derold (Charlotte) Davis, Steve (Brenda) Davis, Jim (Wendy) Davis, Mike (Cecelia) Davis, Gary (Sandi) Davis and David (Evonne) Davis, her sister Adeline Grossnickle, and 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother (Mike and Olga Saathoff), husbands (Derold Noland and Harry Davis) and sisters Dorothy Saathoff and Delores Bonebrake.

Many Thanks to Mike and Cecie Davis for taking such GREAT care of Mom for the 15 months she stayed with them, to her other sons and families that helped Mom in so many ways while she lived in New Hampton, to Faye Leichtman and her family for watching over and caring for Mom all the years she lived in New Hampton and after she moved to Minnesota, her good neighbor Frank Holschlag and the hospice caregiver, Lila Christy.

She will be deeply missed by all those that knew and loved her.

Doris was cremated per her wishes. Visitation and a memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in New Hampton. Mike Vote from the New Hampton Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses will officiate.


Agatha Burke dies at 84

Agatha Regina Burke was born on December 6, 1927, to Henry and Margaret (Kleve) Wenthold.

Agatha was united in marriage to Leo Burke on April 10, 1951, at Our Ladies of Seven Dolars Catholic Church in Festina, Iowa. Eight children were born to this union.

Agatha was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma, Iowa, where she was a member of the rosary society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and enjoyed crocheting, puzzles and card games.

She passed away on September 17, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton, Iowa.

Those left to cherish her memory include her eight children, Carol (Don) Kapler of Cresco, Iowa, Peggy (Mike) Bennett of Atlanta, Georgia, Dan Burke of Alpha, Iowa, Bonnie (Dennis) Humpal of Calmar, Iowa, Randy (Diane) Burke of New Hampton, Iowa, Marilyn Burke of Dike, Iowa, Gloria (Tim) Chelf of Muscatine, Iowa, and Shelly (Jeff) Seehafer of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; five brothers, Greg Wenthold, Raymond (Marsha) Wenthold, Francis (JoAnn) Wenthold, Linus (Connie) Wenthold, and Ronald (Marlene) Wenthold; three sisters,Evelyn Wiltgen, Margaret (Gervase) Hanken and Norine (Robert) Drahozal; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Steinlage and Agnes Meyer; fifteen grandchildren, Kathy Kapler, Steve Kapler, Mark (Jessica) Kapler, Michelle (Brian) Howley, Chris Bennett, Casey Humpal, Kayla Humpal, Skyler Burke, Kyle Burke, Cody (Sammi) Cummings, Dilan Cummings, Shantell Chelf, Brody Chelf, Ally Seehafer and Emma Seehafer; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Leo; parents, Henry and Margaret Wenthold; brother Edwin (Leona) Wenthold, sisters Rita (Francis) Wiltgen; a sister, Teckla (Oscar) Ott; and four brothers-in-law, Ralph Wiltgen, Edward (Lucille) Shatek, Theodore Meyer and Ferdinand Steinlage.


E. Lucille Smith dies at 88

E. Lucille Smith age 88 of Nashua died Saturday morning, Sept. 1, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, Nashua, with Rev. James Mann and Ben Sholl presiding. Interment was in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield with Chad Smith, Casey Smith, Sara Shaw, Matt Hasenwinkel, Megan Hasenwinkel, Brooke Jones, Kelly Crouch, Shane Link, Cade Demro and Cole Demro serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Scot Demro and Alan Haskenwinkel. Military honors will be conducted by the Nashua V.F.W. Post.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

E. Lucille Smith was born November 24, 1923, in Minburn, the daughter of Guy and Bertha (Smith) Nourse. She received her education near Minburn and was a graduate of the Washington Township High School in 1941. After high school, Lucille worked for a brief period at a munitions factory in Ankeny. On November 25, 1943, she enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. She served during World War II and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on January 24, 1946.

Following her service to her country, she began working for a real estate office in Kansas City, MO. Lucille met Mark L. Smith after the war while they were working and going to school in Kansas City. The couple were married on November 30, 1947, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. To this union three children were born. The couple lived in Waverly for a short time before moving to Nashua in 1949. She and her husband were co-owners of Smith Jewelry in Nashua and Smith Jewelers in Charles City for many years. Lucille enjoyed playing cards, golf, her church group, the Majels and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Women’s Club.

Survivors include her husband, Mark; two daughters, Nancy (Alan) Hasenwinkel of Cedar Falls, Shirley (Scot) Demro of Nashua; ten grandchildren, Chad (Shayna) Smith of Clive, Sara (Adam Streigel) of Windsor Heights, Casey (Eric Burmeister) Smith of Des Moines, Matt Hasenwinkel of Des Moines, Megan (Mike) Hasenwinkel of Eagan, Minn., Brooke (Rhys) Jones of Woodinville, WA, Kelly (Chris) Crouch of Davenport, Shane (Lischia) Link of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Cade Demro, Cole Demro both of Nashua; thirteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Gary Smith; one sister, Dorothy Brooks; two brothers, Verne Nourse and Russell Nourse.

John P. Kout dies at 89

John P. Kout age 89 of Lawler, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2012, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler, with Rev. Nick March celebrating the Mass. Placing the pall will be John Kout, Margaret Nolte, Mary Kruse and JoAnn Mahlstedt. Bob Huinker will be the organist and cantor for the service. Melanie Kruse will be the lector and John's four children will present the offertory gifts.

Interment will be in the church cemetery with Mark Kruse, Mike Kruse, Matt Kruse, Myron Kruse,Marvin Kruse, Dean Mahlstedt and Dale Mahlstedt serving as pallbearers.  Honorary pallbearers are John's granddaughters, Marie Pleggenkuhle, Melanie Kruse, Marjorie Eberling, Ellen Hunley, Jolene Harding, Alicia Rose Imbouathong.

Arrangements are with Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Lawler.

Friends may greet the family 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. parish scripture service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Friday.

John Peter Kout was born November 15, 1922, in Lawler, Iowa the son of Mathias and Clara (Denner) Kout. He received his education in Lawler attending the Mt. Carmel Catholic School. As a young man, he worked alongside his father on the family farm.

On April 4, 1945, at St.Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, he married Helen Balik.  To this union four children were born.  The couple lived on a farm near Lawler for many years before selling their farm in 1963 and moving into the town of Lawler.  Early in his marriage, he began working as a carpenter and enjoyed it so much he made his career building and remodeling many projects throughout northeast Iowa. He semi-retired in 1984.  

John and Helen loved to travel throughout the U.S. and took several cruises together.  They also has a passion for attending polka dances and traveled as far as needed to enjoy them.  Helen died suddenly on January 21, 2002 at the age of 82.

John enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing cards whenever he had a chance. He especially enjoyed going out to eat and never passed up a chance to tell his stories and visit with friends at coffee.

Survivors include one son, John (Carol) Kout of Lawler, three daughters, Margaret (George) Nolte of Nicholasville, KY, Mary (Melvin) Kruse of Lawler and JoAnn (Darold) Mahlstedt of Clear Lake; thirteen grandchildren, Mark Kruse, Mike Kruse, Matt Kruse, Myron Kruse, Marvin Kruse,Dean Mahlstedt,  Dale Mahlstedt,  Marie Pleggenkuhle, Melanie Kruse, Marjorie Eberling, Ellen Hunley, Jolene Harding and  Alicia Rose Imbouathong; twenty-three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; and one brother, Frank Kout.
