Mabel A. LaHaug dies at 73

Mabel A. LaHaug, age 73 of New Hampton, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2012 at New Hampton Care Center surrounded by her family.

Memorial Service for Mabel will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton with Pastor Glen Smith officiating. Burial will be held at New Hampton Cemetery in New Hampton.

Friends may greet the family from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton.

Mabel Ann Hawkins was born February 14, 1939 in Dubuque, to Russell and Florence (Schemmel) Hawkins. She graduated from New Hampton High School in 1956. On August 27, 1956 Mabel was united in marriage to Hiram Norman LaHaug at St. Olaf’s Lutheran Churchin New Hampton, where the couple made their home. To this union four children were born, Laurine, Norman, Laura and Christy. Mabel worked for 10 years at the A&P Egg Plant, later known as Hillandale Farms, 25 years for Sara Lee, as well as driving school bus several years. Mabel was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Hampton. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, gardening and her pets. Mabel especially loved her grandchildren and attending their activities.

Mabel is survived by her children, Laurine (Robert) Hackman of Lawler, Norman LaHaug of Seabrook, TX, Laura (Leon) Reicks of Postville and Christy (Mark) Gary of Omaha, NE; one brother, Louis (Norma) Hawkins of Lawler; her grandchildren, Tyler Hackman, Lindsay and Lucas LaHaug and Drew and Nash Reicks; as well as, two nieces, Susan Hawkins and Michele (Chad) Fritz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hiram on September 3, 1997; and one brother in infancy, Anthony.


Wayne Abbott dies at 90

Wayne Abbott, 90, of New Hampton, (formerly of Greenfield,) passed away on Friday, June 29, 2012, at the Sunrise Cottages in Rochester, Minnesota.

Funeral Services: Will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield with burial in the Greenfield Cemetery with full military graveside rites by the Greenfield American Legion Head-Endres Post 265 and V.F.W. Post 5357. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Family Visitation: Will be held on Thursday one hour prior to services at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield.

Wayne Elmer Abbott was born April 5, 1922, in Union County, Iowa, the son of John Elmer and Sarah Agnes (Gray) Abbott. He passed away on Friday, June 29, 2012, at the Sunrise Cottages in Rochester, Minnesota, at the age of 90.

Wayne was raised in Greenfield and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1942. On April 5, 1942, he was united in marriage to Ruth LaVonne Bolger in Carmeron, Missouri. He served his country in the United States Army. He served in the Medical Corp during World War II in Australia, New Guinea and The Philippines from 1942 to 1945. After he was discharged from the military, they moved several times in the Midwest following Wayne’s work as an engineer. In 1970, the couple moved to Frederic, Wisconsin, where they lived for 20 years. In 1990, they moved to New Hampton, Iowa. In 2010, Wayne moved to Rochester, Minnesota.

Wayne enjoyed woodworking, gardening, riding his bicycle and taking walks. He especially loved being with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth Abbott in 2010; four brothers, Franklin, Roland, Earl and Verl Abbott; and four sisters, Thelma Ridler, Dorotha Berry, Velta Price and Lucille Stark.

He is survived by his daughter, Jayne Yamriska and husband Tim of DeForest, Wisconsin; son, Jerry Abbott and wife Denise of Rochester, MN; granddaughter, Jenna Abbott; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


 

Scott Dwane Honken dies at 42

A funeral service for Scott D. Honken was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hartley. Father Tim Hogan officiated.

Pallbearers were Shawn Honken, Grant Honken, Rodd Knapp, Cameron Knapp, Greg Cotter, Terry Remillard and Wally Tschopp. Internment was at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Sanborn and Hartley Funeral Homes assisted with the arrangements.

Scott Dwane Honken, the son of Everon and Marilyn (Geerdes) Honken, was born on October 2, 1969, at the Sibley Hospital in Sibley, Iowa. He attended grade school in Sibley and in 1982 Scott moved with his family to Hartley and finished his education by graduating in 1988 from Hartley-Melvin High School. Scott went on to attend Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg, and graduated with a degree in Hotel-Motel Restaurant Management.

On May 30, 1992 he was united in marriage to Amy Sue Stolfus at the Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton. Following their marriage the couple lived in Estherville, Spirit Lake and then in 1994 moved to Hartley. Scott worked at the Handy Shops Convenience Stores, Evertek, and later Med-Equip Pharmacy.

Following a nine year courageous battle with cancer, Scott passed away on June 19, 2012 at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley at the age of 42.

Scott was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hartley, and he also had served on the Hartley Chamber of Commerce. He loved vegetable gardening, making homemade soup, home improvement projects, working on the computer and a can of coke.

He was preceded in death by his father Everon Honken, an infant brother Shane Honken, father-in-law Lowell Stolfus and both of his paternal and maternal grandparents..

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Amy, the love of his life for 20 years; mother: Marilyn Honken of Hartley; a brother: Shawn Honken of Minneapolis, Minn; his mother-in-law: Linda Stolfus of New Hampton; three sisters-in-law: Lisa Sullivan of Frisco, Texas, Ladine Knapp and her husband Rod of New Hampton, and Dena Honken of Hartley; nieces and nephews: Grant and Eli Honken, Cam and Maddie Knapp, and Tori Sullivan; many other relatives and friends.


 

Marian L. Bahlmann dies at 90

Marian L. Bahlmann, age 90 of New Hampton, died on Tuesday, July 3 2012 at New Hampton Care Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Frederika United Methodist Church, Frederika, with Pastor Sheryl Hull officiating.

Burial will be in Alcock Cemetery at rural Frederika, with Brian Bahlmann, Todd Bahlmann, Mark Bockhaus, Austin Reding, Tyler Reding, Lee Bahlmann and Tyler Bahlmann serving as casket bearers.

Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m., Friday, July 6, 2012 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton and one hour prior to the service at the church. Online condolences for Marian’s family may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com. Memorials may be given to Frederika United Methodist Church.

Marian Leone Treloar was born on December 13, 1921 to Edward and Laura (Smith) Treloar on a farm nearSumner. She attended country school and graduated from Sumner High School in 1938 and after her graduation she taught country school. Marian was united in marriage to Stanley Bahlmannon June 24, 1941 at Faith Church in Tripoli. The couple farmed near Frederika and later moved into Frederika where they lived the rest of their lives. She was a cook at Frederika High School, New Hampton Care Center, Tripoli Nursing Home and Congregate Meals in Tripoli. Later she was an aide at Bremer County Care Facility. She enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, cooking, baking and playing cards. She was an active member of Frederika United Methodist Church and the Red Hat Society.

Marian is survived by her children Gary (Gayle) Bahlmann of Lansing, Marilyn (Vern) Bockhaus of Ionia, Dennis Bahlmann of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc., Jeffery Bahlmann of New Hampton, Judy Houston of St. Louis, Mo., Debbie (Denny) Reding of Dysart, and Martin Bahlmann of Cedar Falls; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brothers Jack (Judy) Treloar of Waucoma, and Don (Mary) Treloar of Hawkeye; sister Joyce Ellicsonof Decorah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Stanley on February 22, 2010; sisters Beth Wireman and Catherine Flaig; and brothers George and Clayton Treloar.


Roy Sires dies at 77

Roy Sires, age 77 of Waverly, died Tuesday July 3, 2012, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield. There will be no public visitation.

Charles D. Vickers Jr. dies at 85

Charles D. Vickers Jr., age 85 of New Hampton died Thursday, July 5, 2012, at the New Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Fredericksburg with Pastor Shirley Will officiating. Music for the service will be provided by Gail Allison as organist. A special CD of Charlene Burgess will be played, "Remember Me". The Allison Family will sing Grace Alone" and the congregation will sing, "I'll Fly Away" and "Amazing Grace". "Anchors Away" and "Keep America Singing" will be played during the recessional. Military Rites will be given by the Fredericksburg AMVETS Post 90.

Private family interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta, Wisc., with Shane Pugh, Travis Pugh, Jeremiah Pugh, Tonya Zeien, Kendra Pongracz, Steve Crawford, Leslie Anne Crawford and Laura Raye Crawford serving as bearers.

Friends may greet the family 3 – 6 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2012, at Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. Visitation continues an hour prior to the funeral at the church on Monday.

If so desired, memorials maybe made to Iowa Hospice or the family.

Charles Danes Vickers Jr. was born October 25, 1926, in Rochester, NY, the son of Charles Danes and Myrtle (Taylor) Vickers Sr. He received his education at the Westfield Technical High School in Springfield, MA, graduating in 1944. In his youth he sang in the school and church choirs and performed with the school's drum and bugle corp, playing the snare drums.

He was inducted into the United States Navy on September 4, 1944 serving aboard the USS Chenango aircraft carrier during WW II. He was honorably discharged as a Radarman Third Class on June 2, 1946.

Charles had attended Northland College in Ashland, Wisc., where he met his future wife, Barbara Jeanne Burkitt. The couple were married on January 29, 1947. To this union four daughters were born.

Charlie had been a tool & die worker in Cudahy, Wisc. and later the owner and operator of the Maple Theater in Mapleton. While in Mapleton, he had been the school board president and local chamber president. He had worked as an engineer for The Zenith Corp. in Sioux City, Deluxe Manufacturing in Lake Mills, and the AMF Corp. in both Des Moines and Jefferson. Charlie and Barbara lived in Florida from 1987 until 2002, when they moved to New Hampton to be near their daughter and family. He moved to Whispering Willow Assisted Living facility in Fredericksburg in August of 2009 before going to the NH Care Center. He was a member of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church.

In every community they lived, Charlie and Barbara were members of the local Methodist Church Choir. Throughout his life, he was actively involved in barbershop singing, including the River City Chorus in Mason City, The DesMoinneaires, and several Florida choruses. He was honored for starting a chorus in Florida and for establishing several quartets in his musical days. He was involved in the Society for the Preservation & Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America and was Past-President of the Des Moinneaires Barbershop Chorus. He was an avid golfer a member of the Fredericksburg AMVETS and Mercy Medical Center Auxillary. He was honored to travel to Washington DC in September 2010 on the Winnebago Honor Flight.

Survivors include four daughters, Jeanne Braun of Medina, OH, Francie (Steve) Crawford of Fredericksburg, Charlene Burgess of Grants Pass, OR, Bobbi (Shane) Pugh of Woodward, IA; six grandchildren, Tonya (Rob) Zeien, Kendra (Matyas) Pongracz, Leslie Crawford, Laura Crawford, Jeremiah (Sarah) Pugh, Travis (Shae) Pugh; ten great-grandchildren, Jordon Coleman, Dallas Coleman, Tristan Wright, Jeremiah Pugh, Aidyn Pongracz, Avery Pongracz, A.M. Pongracz, Carter Pugh, Holden Pugh and Mckinley Pugh.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Barbara on April 8, 2009, one brother, Gilbert Vickers; one sister, Elizabeth Miller.

Craig Queel dies at 91

Craig Queel, age 91, of Decorah, died on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 15, 2012, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue in Decorah, with Rev. Allen Vik presiding. Burial will be in the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery, Decorah.

Friends may call from 2- 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2012, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home. There will be a VFW Memorial Service at 4 p.m., on Sunday at the funeral home.

Craig Junior Queel was born on June 2, 1921, the son of Martin and Sadie (Bronner) Queel in Cresco. Craig graduated from Cresco High School in 1938. He entered the US Navy in March 1941, and served during World War II. Craig married Corinne Kohl, from Decorah on March 30, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA, and to this union, they had one daughter: Cindy. Craig then continued in the Navy, serving as Chief Warrant Officer, retiring in 1970. Craig and his family lived in Orlando, Florida for five years, before moving to Decorah after the death of his first wife in 1975. Craig was an avid sharp shooter and enjoyed shooting in tournaments; where he received many medals and ribbons over the years for his excellent marksmanship. Craig married Iverna “Gary” Moen, on March 17, 1990 in Carpentersville, Ill. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards. Craig was a member of the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

Craig is survived by his daughter: Cindy Jirak and husband Jeff, of Lawler, IA. Three grandchildren: Craig, Martin “Marty” and Debbie Jirak. One sister-in-law: Colletta Vick, Decorah, IA. Three nieces: LuAnn McKenzie, Nancy Vick and Marilyn Bonjean.

Craig was preceded in death by his parents: Martin and Sadie (Bronner) Queel. His first wife: Corinne (Kohl) Queel in 1975 and his second wife: Iverna “Gary” (Moen) Queel in 2004. One brother-in-law: Marvin Vick in 2008.

 

Joanne McGrane-Kulp dies at 73

Burial services for Joanne McGrane-Kulp, wife of Leo C. McGrane (deceased) will be held on Monday, July 23, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s cemetery in Elma. 

Joanne passed away on October 28, 2011.  Reverend Steven Garner will preside and a luncheon will follow at noon at the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma.

Joanne H. Gigrich was born in St. Paul, Minn. on January 20, 1938 to Richard & Agnes Gigrich.  She attended St. Joseph’s Academy, graduating in 1956.  She is survived by her sister Donna, and her brothers Richard and James.

She married Leo C. McGrane on July 12, 1958.  After living in St. Paul, the McGranes moved to Aberdeen, S.D. where they raised their children:  Kevin, Brian, Colleen (Carlson), Maureen (Kuiper), Paul, Daniel (deceased), Eileen (Pulse), Dennis, Juleen (Nieto) and Mark.  Joanne & Leo regularly returned to Iowa to visit Leo’s family in Deerfield and Ionia.  Many summers were spent visiting Leo’s mother Nellie (deceased); his brothers Walter and Earl (both deceased), Merle (surviving); his sisters Allene Welch (deceased) and Edna Cox (surviving); their in-laws; and numerous nieces and nephews.

After Leo’s death in 1992, Joanne spent winters snow-birding in Arizona where she met Donald Kulp.  Joanne & Don were married on September 5, 1998 and lived in Seattle.  After several years they relocated to Colorado where Joanne was able to spend time with her youngest grandchildren. She was extremely proud of her nineteen grandchildren:  Dirk, Cara, Kyle, Adam, Karla, Chase, Brianna, Riley, RaeAnne, Chas, Erik, Alanna, Luka, Daniel, Hazel, Emily, Cassandra, Sarah and Leo.

Descendants of the Melbourne & Nellie McGrane family will be gathering together for a family picnic at the park in Ionia on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at noon.  Family and friends are welcome to attend the potluck picnic, please RSVP to Jane McGrane ionialibrary@windstream.net or Kathy Beckman rpbeckman@hotmail.com.

 

Wayne Richter dies at 55

Wayne Richter, age 55, of New Hampton, died on Sunday, July 15, 2012 at his mother's home in New Hampton surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph’s Center in New Hampton with Fr. Mark Osterhaus celebrating.  Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at New Hampton with Philip Utley, Tony Utley, Bill Richter, Dan Heit, Kye Richter and Brett Franzenserving as casket bearers.  

Friends greeted the family from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton.  Visitation continued at the church one hour prior to the funeral mass.  Memorials may be directed to the family.  Online condolences for Wayne’s family may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com.

Wayne Allen Richter was born August 1, 1956 in West Bend, Iowa, the youngest of six children, to Bernard and Delores (Gade) Richter.  When he was young, Wayne moved with his family to the New Hampton area where he attended St. Joseph’s school and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1974. After graduating he worked for Larsen’s Jack and Jill prior to working for St. Joseph’s Hospital in New Hampton.  Wayne then worked at Beatrice in Fredericksburg and Featherlite in Cresco.  He was most recently employed at Allen College of Nursing in Waterloo. 

Wayne was a member of Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph’s Center.  Wayne enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, bowling, playing pool and spending time with family and friends.  He was a tried and true fan of the Dallas Cowboys and especially loved his dog, Buddy.  

Wayne is survived by his mother, Delores; his sisters, Linda (Allen) Heit of New Hampton, Karen (Don) Utley; his brothers Larry (Linda) Richter; Dennis Richter, Gery (Cherry) Richter all of New Hampton; his nieces and nephews, Joleen (Mike) Hayden, Lisa (Steve) Strecker, Dan Heit, Philip (Michelle) Utley, Tony (Jennifer) Utley, Shelly (Dave) Daly, Jill (Jamie) DeSloover, Jennifer (Chris) Hovey, Kye (Tiffany) Richter, Kerrie (Brett) Franzen, Sondra (Brian) Heit, Kalee Richter, Bill Richter, KaitlynRichter and several great nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard in 1993 and his maternal and paternal grandparents.


 

James H. “Jim” Rosauer dies at 82

James H. “Jim” Rosauer, 82, died Tuesday, July 17 2012 at Allen Memorial Hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 21 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with inurnment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery at a later date.  Public visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m.  Visitation also for an hour preceding services at the church on Saturday.

He was born June 15, 1930 in Ionia, son of Julius C. and Susan Glaser Rosauer.  He married Lucille A. Beard on October 16, 1954 in New Hampton.

Jim worked at Chamberlin Mfg., then SchoitzEngineering and finally as a machinist at John Deere Tractor Mfg. Co.  

He is survived by his wife, Lucille; two sons, Mike (Jeanette) Rosauer of Bonney Lake, Wash. And Tim (Sheryl) Rosauer of Evansdale; three daughters, Debbie (Craig) Walton, Diane (Jeff Edgar) Edgar and Joan (Brian) Shepard all of Waterloo; twelve grandchildren, Randall Walton, Nicholas Walton, Lacey Rosauer, Tristan Perkins, Mindy, Megan and Josh Edgar, Alex and Audrey Shepard and Ashley Fairchild; eight great-grandchildren,  Emma, Lydia, Nora, Ira, Colton, Rylie, Cordé and Alayna; a brother, Vince Rosauer of Ore.; six sisters, Fran Neville of Wash., Rita (Ski) Weber of Colo., Dolores Ungs of Iowa, Terri (Jack) Duffin of Calif., Lucy Ferguson of Hawaii and Patty (Rick) Stoddard of Wash.

Jim was preceded in death by three brothers, Jerry, Joe and Bobby; three sisters, Marie Mendenhall, Lou Rawdon and Judy Vickers.

Memorials may be made to the family, with beneficiary to be decided at a later date.

Lillian Joslin dies at 73

Lillian Janet Jones Joslin died July 18, 2012 at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City due to complications resulting from heart surgery.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua with Rev. Okitakoyi Lundula officiating. Interment will be in Riverton Cemetery, rural Nashua, with Jamey Welter, Tim Fisher, Mitch Rosol, Benjamin Kostka, Robert Beatty and Aron Beatty serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Michael (Casey) Jones, Brett Jones, Scott Jones and Justin Beatty.

Friends may greet the family 4 – 7 p.m. Monday at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home, Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Lillian was born February 2, 1939 at her Aunt Lillian Fisher’s home in rural Chickasaw County to Neal Clifford Jones and Mary Lillian (Rodamaker) Jones.

Lillian was known as Jan to her family and friends. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1947 and worked as a caregiver at the Floyd County Home until she married Rodney George Joslin Jr. on September 12, 1964 at the Faith Bible Chapel in Charles City, Iowa.

From start to finish, Jan’s life revolved around helping others. Everyone who had the privilege to know her all have said that she was the least selfish person they had ever known, and no one had a bigger heart.

Throughout her life Jan’s love of family and its history is evident in the geneology work that she did for many years. The roots of where her family began and its growth was something Jan treasured and she showed the same love to everyone.

Though she will be missed by all, her life is one her family and friends will celebrate forever.

She will be missed by her remaining relatives including her husband, Rodney G. Joslin of Charles City; one brother, Thomas (Sandra) Clyde Jones of NV; nieces and nephews, Kimberly (Jones) Roby, Scott Jones. Lillian was preceded in death by her grandparents Jacob Leslie Jones and Araminta Charlotta (Carter) Jones and Myron Henry Rodamaker and Clara Eugenia (Wiltse) Rodamaker and her parents, Neal Clifford Jones and Mary Lillian (Rodamaker) Jones, siblings, Alice Wilhemine (Jones) Deyo, Theran Stuart, and James Kyle Jones.


 

Roy L. Volker dies at 84

Roy L. Volker age 84 of Frederika, died Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at St. John Lutheran Church, Frederika with Pastor Dale Halverson officiating. Edith Kolthoff will be the organist accompanying the congregation singing, "Amazing Grace" and "In The Garden". A special CD will be played, "When I Get Where I'm Going".

 

Interment will be in the church cemetery with Dennis Niemeyer, Dale Mathias, Chuck Mai, August Throndson, Dennis Shurtleff, Dennis Volker and Duane Mueller serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Stanley Feuchtwanger, Lavern Anhalt, Lloyd Mueller, Jimmy Lemke and Faron Swehla.

Roy Louis Volker was born November 29, 1927, on the Volker Family Farm north of Sumner, IA, the son of Fred and Sophie (Zell) Volker. He received his education in rural country school. As a boy and a young man, Roy was active in the family farm operation working in the field as well as milking cows. On January 19, 1948, at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika, he married Maxine Bahlmann of Frederika. To this union one son was born. Following their marriage, Roy worked at the Frederika Feed Mill for nearly twenty years before he decided to farm for himself. Roy, Maxine and their newborn son, Bob, moved to a farm northeast of Frederika where they farmed for several years and then farmed near Tripoli until 1960. In 1960, Roy took a position at Chamberlain Manufacturing in Waterloo and the family moved into the town of Frederika. He retired in 1985 after working for Chamberlain for 25 years.

Throughout his life, Roy loved being outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed camping and gardening. Roy always kept active and enjoyed working on lawnmowers and making many wood craft projects.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Maxine; one son, Bob Volker (Pat Lukes) of New Hampton; two step-grandchildren, Faron (Tracy) Swehla of Kearney, MO; Jackie (Jimmy) Lemke of New Hampton; five step-great-grandchildren, Tyler, Brianna and Dillon Swehla, Logan Finnegan and Lola Lemke; one sister, Evelyn Rewoldt of Cedar Falls; three sisters-in-law, Iola Buchholtz of Tripoli, Eldora (George) Hagan of Marshalltown, LaDonna (Kenneth) Lampe of Waverly; one brother-in-law, Virgil (Wilma) Bahlmann of Clermont.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one step-great-grandson, Kyle DeVries; three brothers, Bill Volker, Jim Volker and Fredrick Volker; two sisters, Sophie Mueller and Lucille Buckendal

 

Larry Elenz dies at 64

Posted: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 Larry Elenz, age 64, of Vinton, formerly of New Hampton, died Saturday, July 21, 2012 at his home in Vinton.

A private family graveside service will be held, with burial in New Hampton Cemetery at New Hampton.  Military rites will be provided by New Hampton American Legion Post 38 and New Hampton VFW Post 5238.

Lawrence Leo Elenz was born on February 13, 1948 to Lawrence and Marie (Papenheim) Elenz in New Hampton.  He attended school in New Hampton and later, Larry enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam.  He received his honorable discharge in 1969.  Larry traveled around the U.S. working at various jobs.  He lived in Lincoln, NE and then moved to Waterloo and finally to Vinton.

Larry is survived by his sisters, Theresa Stremcha of New Hampton, Rita Cummings of Waterloo, Rose Meirick of Jesup, Maggie Faber of Algona, Tillie Havlik of Elma, Katie Schmit of New Hampton and Alice Kintzle of Waterloo; his brother, Mike Elenz of Reno, NV; sister-in-law, Marilyn Elenz of New Hampton; his aunt, Henrietta Elenz of New Hampton; his uncle, Eugene Papenheimof Waterloo and numerous nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leo and John and his sisters, Mary Ann Webb and Barb Bormann.


 

Francis M. Schwickerath dies at 83

Francis M. Schwickerath, 83, of Nevada, died Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the Story County Medical Center in Nevada.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Saint Patrick’s Church with Father Rick Daggit officiating.  Interment will be in the Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Nevada.

Visitation with the family present will be 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church with a Christian Vigil Service at 7:45 p.m..

Memorials may be made to Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Francis was born November 10, 1928, at Colo, Iowa, the son of Leo and Catherine (Coleman) Schwickerath.  He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in North Washington.  Francis farmed with his father and later started Francis’ Refrigeration.  He moved to Nevada in 1968 and owned and operated two laundromats, the Lincolnway Laundry in Nevada and the Dime-a-Time Laundry in Boone.  Francis was a member of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada where he enjoyed helping in various ministries. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.  Francis enjoyed visiting with his nephews and nieces and with his parish family.

Francis is survived by two brothers: Donald (Donna) Schwickerath and Merle (Karen) Schwickerath, both of New Hampton; three sisters: Marianne Mashek of Rockwell City, Kathleen Sullivan of Charles City, and Dorothy (Michael) Carlin of New Hampton, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers-in-law: Donald Sullivan, Donald Mashek; and one nephew, Jason Schwickerath.

Fabian E. Friedhof dies at 86

Fabian “Fay” Freidhof, age 86, of Elma, died on July 25, 2012 at Regional Health Services in Cresco.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 30, 2012 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes, with Father Steven Garner as celebrant.  Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery at Lourdes with Matthew Freidhof, Chris Freidhof, Daniel Freidhof, Heather Gamm, Malissa Freidhof and Joshua Heying serving as casket bearers.

Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Conway-Markham Funeral Chapel in Elma, with a 7:30 p.m. scriptural wake service.  Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the funeral mass on Monday, July 30, 2012.  Memorials may be directed to the family.  Online condolences may be left for Fay’s family at www.conway-markhamfh.com.

Fabian “Fay” Freidhof was born on July 21, 1926 to Edward and Helena (Diederich) Freidhofon the family farm near Alta Vista.  Fay attended and graduated from St. William’s Catholic School in Alta Vista.  He worked as a farm hand near Roseville, for 3 years.  He was united in marriage to Berenice Nibauron October 8, 1946 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes.  Fay and Berenice farmed near Lourdes.  In 1962 Fay became a carpenter and also continued to farm.  He retired from farming in the early 1980’s and continued to work as a carpenter until he was 82 years of age. Fay enjoyed carpentry, fishing, dancing, playing cards, gardening, traveling and feeding and watching birds.  He was a member of Our lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus to which he was a fourth degree Knight.

Fay is survived by his loving wife, Berenice of Elma; his children, Norb (Roxanne) Freidhof of Assaria, KS, Alan (Norma) Freidhof of West Union and Colleen(Mike) Heying of Elma; his grandchildren, Matt (Amy) Freidhof, Chris (Kara) Freidhof, Dan (Teresa) Freidhof, Heather (Blake) Gamm, Malissa Freidhof, Josh Heying, Annette (Arlen) Kriener and Scott (Kelley) Mikesh; his brothers, Adrian (Helen) Freidhof of New Hampton, Cyrus (Jeanne) Freidhof of Alta Vista, Robert (Lorraine) Freidhof of Cresco; one brother-in-law, Roger (Marilee) Nibaur of Elma and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jerome and his sisters, Edith and Gertrude.


 

Diane Marie Ishmael dies at 41

Diane Marie Ishmael, 41, Ossian, Iowa, died, Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at her home in Ossian. She was born July 26, 1970 in Wagner, South Dakota to Marion and Linda (Pavlis) Ishmael.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 29, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. at Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Ossian, and one hour before services at the school on Monday.

Celebration of Life Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 30, 2012 at the Turkey Valley High School, Jackson Junction.

Inurnment will be on August 4, 2012 at the Wagner Z.C.B.J. Cemetery in Wagner, South Dakota.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Diane Ishmael Memorial Fund.

Diane graduated from Colome High School, Colome, South Dakota in 1988.   She then graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. During this time of her education she spent a semester at Oxford University in England.  Her quest for learning pushed her to continue her education.  She received a master’s degree in English from Iowa State University in 1995 and a master’s degree in Education from Drake University in 1998.

Diane taught school at Des Moines Lincoln, Waukee, Starmontand Turkey Valley, she was currently teaching at Forest Trail Academy and Northeast Iowa Community College.  This remained Diane’s one true love. Her students.Diane inspired many students to increase their knowledge and challenged them to exceed their own highest expectations.  Her compassion and intensity for the written word has left an incredible impression on so many young minds.

Diane was united in marriage with Stephen Wright on May 24, 1994 in Des Moines, Iowa, they were later divorced. She then married Dr. Patrick Boe on January 1, 2011 in San Diego, California.

Diane enjoyed spending time with her children, reading books, conversation and traveling.

Diane is survived by her husband, Dr. Patrick Boe, Ossian, Iowa; two children, Brennen and Jason Wright of Ankeny, Iowa; three step-children Domenic, Mahogani and Kaelan Boe, all of Calmar, Iowa; her parents, Marion and Linda Ishmael of Clearfield, South Dakota; her sister, Denise Ishmael and Karl Tonsager of Harrisburg, South Dakota; her maternal grandmother, Clara Belle Pavlis of Gregory, South Dakota; her first husband, Stephen (Ginger) Wright of Ankeny, Iowa and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Diane was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Lawrence Pavlis and her paternal grandparents, Ralph and Viola Ishmael.
