Rose M. Nystel dies at 80

Rose M. Nystel, age 80, of New Hampton, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 at New Hampton Nursing and Rehab. 

Funeral services will be held for Rose at 10:30, Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating.  Burial will be held at New Hampton Cemetery with Duane Stansberry, Ronald Olson, Irvin Nystel, Brandon Wegner, Spencer Wegner and Shawn Wegner serving as casket bearers.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton and will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday.  Memorials may be directed to the family.  Online condolences for Rose’s family may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com

Rose Marie was born on March 12, 1932 in Chickasaw County to Ulysses and Anna (Rohrick) Stansberry.  She attended country school in Devon Township.  After school she worked on the family farm.  On August 14, 1950, Rose was united in marriage to Kenneth Nystel at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton.  The couple resided in Chickasaw County where they raised their two children.  Throughout the years she worked at several jobs until becoming a homemaker.  Rose enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, needle pointing, as well as spending time with her brothers and sisters.  She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Rose is survived by her son, Marlin “Boomer” Nystel; her daughter Sue (Steve) Wegner, all of New Hampton; her grandchildren, Shawn, Ashley, Brandon and Spencer Wegner; her great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Madison Wegner and Jake Milder; one brother, Lawrence Stansberry of Waterloo; one sister-in-law, Lois Stansberry of New Hampton and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth on February 23, 1978; her siblings, Ervin Stansberry, Sylvia Nystel, Orella Schwickerath and Edna Maklenburg.


 

George Robert “Bob” Tuttle dies at 86

George Robert “Bob” Tuttle, age 86, of Elma, died on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for George will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 at Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, Elma.  Private family burial will be held at a later date.

John Marvin Chandler dies at 69

Kathleen Marie Hackman dies at 69

Kathleen Marie Hackman, age 69 of New Hampton, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Sartori Memorial Hospital, Cedar Falls.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday Dec. 8, 2012 at Holy Family Parish, St. Mary’s Center, New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus officiating.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton with Chris Cartney, Jason Cartney, Joe Jacoby, Richard Jacoby, Jr., Scott Hackman,and Paul Hackman serving as pallbearers and Cortney Anderson, Nick Anderson, Brent Anderson, Zach Hackman, Dalton Hackman and Connor Hackman as honorary pallbearers.

Kathleen Marie was born July 8, 1943, in Elma, the daughter of Merle and Leona (Hooverman) Jacoby. She attended the Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Elma. Later she attended New Hampton High School where she graduated in 1966 .

On November 26, 1960, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma, she married the love of her life, Donald Bernard Hackman. To this union two children were born: Connie and Bob. The couple made New Hampton their home.

After completion of her high school degree Kathy became employed at Hillandale Farms. Some years later she purchased the Bo-Peep Shop and Clothing Store in New Hampton. She was well known for her children’s fashion talents. Many New Hampton natives loved walking into her beautiful shop with high quality children’s clothing. Kathy loved her store, but after several years sold her business and worked part time at the Manges Jewelry Store.

Kathy and Don purchased a cabin in Ventura, Iowa on Clear Lake. They loved fishing and boating together, but having the grandchildren come to stay with them at the cabin was a special joy. Many family memories were made there.

Kathy really enjoyed playing cards and board games. She was a collector and had a passion for Beanie Babies. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she had a vast collection of Santa Figurines, totaling over one thousand. Kathy was a CCD Teacher for many years and participated in the The New Hampton Chamber while owning her business.

The couple loved to travel the United States and would go to Las Vegas and Branson regularly, as well as many other destinations. Family members and old acquaintances were never surprised when Don and Kathy called or looked them up on a vacation. Family and friends were very important to them and taking the time to stop and call were normal kindnesses they showed everyone. If someone needed help or an encouraging word, they were there to help.

Kathy had battled Dementia for many years and just recently moved into the Cedar Health Nursing Home. Her beloved Don had passed away on May 13, 2012. Kathy and Don were always together in their journey through life and now are together again. They will be forever missed by their family.

Kathy is survived by her daughter, Connie (Steve) Anderson of Dalton, Wisc; her son, Bob (Kim) Hackman of New Hampton; six grandchildren, Cortney Anderson, Nick Anderson, Brent (Michelle) Anderson, Zach Hackman, Dalton Hackman, Connor Hackman; one great-granddaughter, Ariana Grace Hackman; four brothers, Francis (Myrna) Jacoby of Waterloo, Richard Jacoby of Victor, Jim (Shirley) Jacoby of Evansdale, and Danny (Mary Jo) Jacoby of Waterloo; two sisters, Sandy (Bob) Quinn of Albert Lea, Minn. and Mary Jean Carney of Farmington, Minn.


 

Margaret A. Brogley

Margaret A. Brogley, age 97, of New Hampton, formerly of Fort Smith, AR died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 at New Hampton Nursing and Rehab.

Services for Margaret will be held in Fort Smith, Arkansas. 

Margaret Ann was born and raised in Fort Smith where she attended school and later graduated from the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville.  She earned her degree in Home Economics which she used as a home economics teacher.  Her passions were politics, reading, and gardening on her hilltop property overlooking the Arkansas River.

Margaret is survived by her brother-in-law, Paul Hassman of New Hampton, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Glynn Reavis, and sister, Lucille Hassman.


 

Elmer A. Wickman dies at 91

Elmer A. Wickman, age 91, of New Hampton, passed away on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral Services for Elmer have been set for 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating.  Burial will be at New Hampton Cemetery in New Hampton.

Elmer Albert Wickman was born on June 5, 1921, on the family farm east of New Hampton to Albert and Ida (Deetz) Wickman.  He attended country school until the 8th grade and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1940.  After graduating he began farming with his mother.  He also worked at White Farm in Charles City for 18 years.  On September 2, 1945, Elmer was united in marriage to Opal Ruby Mau at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in New Hampton.  The couple made their home on the family farm where they raised their five children, Duane, Diana, David, Deborah and Denise.  Elmer was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on church board.  He was the president of the rural school board, served as the Secretary of the Farm Bureau Board of Directors.  Elmer and Opal were active in the Chickasaw Trail Riders for several years.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, BBQ’s, dancing and playing cards. 

Elmer is survived by his children, Duane (Kathy) Wickman of New Hampton, Diana Speltz of New Hampton, David (Lori) Wickman of Clear Lake, Deborah Christensen (Joe Erb) of Fredericksburg, Denise Straw of New Hampton, 13 grandchildren, Chris (Shelly), Mark (Beth), Brian (Stacy) and Stephanie Speltz, Chad (Libby) and Stacy Wickman; Tracy Straw; Annette (Adrian) Montano, Sara (Greg) Schmitt, Paul (Toni) Wickman, Jeff Wickman (Amanda Davis), Marea (David) Baker, Matt (Angie) Christensen, 27 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Opal Ruby, his sisters, Helena, Florence and Alice.


 

Marie K. Speltz dies at 87

Marie K. Speltz age 87 of Lawler, died Saturday morning, Dec. 8, 2012, at the Linn Haven Rehab and Healthcare Center in New Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Nick March celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed by Steve, Joe, Tim and O.J. Speltz. Bob Huinker will be the organist with Deb Speltz, cantor. Mandy Lechtenberg will sing the prelude of “Ave Maria”. Lector for the service will be Joe Scally. Mass Servers will be Pat Sheridan and Jack McKone. Presenting the offertory gifts will be Allie Waugh, Liz Flanders, Jenn Deeny, Trish Mikota and Ann Reuter.

Interment will be in the church cemetery, with Ryan Lechtenberg, Greg Lechtenberg, T.J. Lechtenberg, Chris Speltz, Mark Speltz, J.W. Creighton, Nick Speltz, Craig Speltz, Brian Speltz and Max Jirak serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Ruth McKone, Madonna O’Connell, Shirley Carolan, Shirley Murray, Diane Blazek, Shirley Blazek and Effie Lienau.

Mary “Marie” Katherine Speltz was born May 14, 1925, in Lawler, the daughter of Ray and Katherine “Kit” (Connery) Woods. She attended the Mt. Carmel Grade School and graduated from the Lawler High School. While in high school Marie was a sports enthusiast, playing basketball and being on the cheerleading squad. Following graduation she worked briefly at the Rath Packing Company and also as a dental assistant.

On September 15, 1945, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, she married Norman “Red” Justin Speltz. To this union eleven children were born. While taking care of her children and family Marie also helped her husband Red at their hardware store. Her family was her priority in life and she always made certain they were well loved and well taken cared for.

Marie loved watching her children and grandchildren in all their sporting events and activities regardless where she had to travel to attend. They knew that her smiling face would be in that crowd watching and encouraging them with everything they were participating in.

Marie was an active bowler and also enjoyed dancing. She watched and followed many sporting teams, including the Hawkeyes, Cubs, Packers and Bulls. She also enjoyed an occasional day spent gambling.

Marie was an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Legion Auxiliary. Her family legacy is large and her memory will live on forever through them.

Survivors include her husband, Norman “Red” Speltz; four sons, Steve Speltz, Joe (Mary) Speltz , Jim Speltz, Tim (Deb) Speltz, all of Lawler; seven daughters, Connie (Paul) Deeny of Charles City, Cathy (John) Lechtenberg of Bettendorf, Norma (Dave) Creighton of Des Moines, Jenny (Bob) Millota of Sigormey, Mary (Bryan) Mikota of Green Bay, WI, Theresa (Brian) Jirak of Oklahoma and Rose (James) Armstrong of Arizona; twenty nine grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren;

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Kenneth Speltz.


Elvin G. Hanson dies at 88

Elvin Glen Hanson, age 88, of Nashua, died Dec. 9, 2012, at the Linn Haven Rehab & Healthcare Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday Dec. 13, 2012, at The Little Brown Church in Nashua with Rev. James Mann officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua.

Elvin Glen Hanson was born January 2, 1924, on the family farm in rural Chickasaw County, the son of Glen and Olive (Wesp) Hanson. He attended grade school at the Republic country school until eighth grade. Elvin graduated from Nashua High School in 1941. After graduating, Elvin returned home to work on the family farm. Elvin followed the footsteps of his father and started playing the trumpet when he was a little boy. His love for the trumpet continued to grow as he got older. He played in many different bands over the years including, “Mac & the Buckaroo Buddys”, “Happy Jake”, the “B Sharp Combo”, along with many others.

Elvin met his future wife Marlene Beach, while playing at a wedding dance. They were married on March 21, 1954, at the Little Brown Church. Their first home was near Republic and this is where they welcomed and raised their three children. Later they moved to Elvin’s family farm in the Republic area. 

Elvin had a passion for woodworking and building things with his hands. He was very skilled with a shotgun, and won many trap shooting events at the local gun club. As a young man he enjoyed trapping animals, and liked to travel to the Mississippi fishing, as often as he could. Elvin loved working on his farm and tending to the land and his animals. Farming was a very important part of his life. 

He was an active member at the Little Brown Church, an Eastern Star Member, and was a Master in the Masonic Lodge. Elvin worked for Hydrotile in Nashua for 24 years. 

Survivors include his wife of 58 years Marlene; one son, Robert Hanson of La Crescent, Minn; two daughters, Mary (Wayne) Hollenbaugh of Ft. Lee, Va. and Ann (special friend John) Freiberg of Charles City; 5 grandchildren, Chris (Briannna) Freiberg, Maddie Freiberg, Amy (Kenny) Gillespie, Mark (Michelle) Hollenbough and Aaron Hollenbaugh; 2 great grandchildren, Noah and Elijah Gillespie, with a baby great granddaughter on the way.

Preceding Elvin in death were his parents, Olive and Glen Hanson.


 

Wayne R. Swinton dies at 71

Wayne R. Swinton age 71 of Cedar Falls, died Thursday morning, Dec. 6, 2012, at New Aldaya Lifescapes, Cedar Falls after a lengthy illness.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2012, at Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua. There will be no public visitation.

C. Merle Rochford dies at 99

C. Merle Rochford age 99, of New Hampton, died Friday morning, Dec. 7, 2012, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed by Abby and Carie Knowlton, Olivia Rochford and Katie Gonzales. Lectors for the service will be Paul Trewin and James Rochford. Eucharistic Ministers will be Karen Ellsworth, Glenda Laures and Sandy Rochford. 

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton with Keith Rochford, Justin Elliott, Tim Trewin, Joel Rochford, Nathan Rochford and Andy Rochford serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Merle Roths, Jim Holthaus, Chuck Galligan, Norb Steffen, Bill Weigel, Jim O’Connor, and John Winter.

Charles Merle Rochford was born April 23, 1913, in Fredericksburg, the son of John and Nina (Brannon) Rochford. He attended the Stapleton #6 Rural Country School and was a 1932 graduate of the Lawler High School. Merle worked as a hired hand/laborer around the Lawler area, until the time of his marriage, when they started farming. 

On November 25, 1939, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, he married (Gertrude) Berniece Finnegan. To this union seven children were born. The couple began farming in the Lawler area and after eleven years moved to a farm two miles west of New Hampton. The couple retired from farming in 1975 and moved into New Hampton in 1980. Merle was a life-long farmer at heart. As with most farmers, Merle was handy tinkering with motors, and somewhat of an engineer. The couple raised their family on the farm and had enjoyed many trips to Texas as well as to Ireland. Merle and Berniece were married over 74 years at the time of her death on June 8, 2011. 

Merle was a die hard Iowa Hawkeye fan, loving many sports He had a passion for gardening and loved to share his produce with family and friends. After losing his battle with glaucoma and macular degeneration he wad forced to give up gardening, but still enjoyed being in the outdoors. 

He had been a member of the New Hampton Golf and Country Club, the National Farmers Organization, a Dayton Township Trustee and a director for the Federal Land Bank. He was also a member of the Knights Of Columbus #1697. 

Survivors include four sons, Charles (Connie) Rochford of Rochester, MN, Jerry (Jean) Rochford of New Hampton, Michael (Sandy) Rochford of Cedar Rapids, Rock (Peggy) Rochford of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Sharon Trewin of New Hampton, Patricia Knowlton of Ionia, Roxann (Karl) Podratz of Rochester, MN; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Josephine Rochford of Sumner. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Berniece on June 8, 2011; siblings, Ralph Rochford, Frances “Claire” Billmeyer, John “Bud” Rochford, Anna “Rose” Rochford and James Francis Rochford.


 

Rita Marie Guthart dies at 85

Rita Marie Guthart age 85 of Greene, died Thursday morning, Dec. 6, 2012, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday Dec. 11, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greene with Msgr. Walter Brunkan celebrating the mass. Lector for the service will be Kathie Peters. Mass servers will be Maria and Isabelle Derdzinski. Giftbearers will be Becky Poe, Jacque Poe, Brendan Poe, Connor Poe and Connie Poe. 

Interment will be in St. Boniface Cemetery, Ionia with Dale Poe, Seth Poe, Dean Bergman, Joe Thraenert, Mike Gansen, and Rich Backer serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Ron Venz, Rick Sadler, Rich Hansen, Dennis Edwards, and Don Daiker.

Rita Marie Guthart was born December 28, 1926 in rural Elma, the daughter of William and Margaret (Bilek) Thraenert. She received her education in a county school near Elma. After completion, Rita helped on the family farm for several years. Rita started waitressing in a local café in Cresco and it was while working at the café her friends arranged a blind date for her. This is when she met her future husband Harland. The couple were married May 22, 1954, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Shortly after marriage, they moved onto the family farm near Bassett and soon after moved into their new house in Bassett. It was at this time they were blessed with their two children. 

Rita was a devoted mother, taking care of Marita, her daughter with special needs. She was the quintessential mother, helping her husband on the farm when needed, cooking and taking care of the house, and tending to her children. Rita did whatever was necessary for the family. 

Yearly, Rita would have a large garden filled with a variety of vegetables. She was an exceptional seamstress, making clothes for herself and her children. She spent hour after hour lovingly crocheting and quilting for her family. Rita was also a very good cook and was known for her famous potato salad recipe. 

Rita is survived by her daughter, Connie (Dale) Poe of Greene; one brother, Vincent (Sadie) Thraenert of Cresco; two grandchildren, Becky Poe and Seth (Jacque) Poe; and two great-grandchildren, Brendan and Connor Poe. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harland on May 27, 1988; one daughter, Marita Guthart; one brother, William Robert Thraenert; and one sister, Kathleen Thraenert.


 

Caroline Menken dies at 90

Funeral services for Caroline Menken, 90, of Greene, will be Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher and Rev. Jane Fryda officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene where there will be a Public Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Caroline Poppe was born April 24, 1922, on a farm in rural Chickasaw County, the first child of Edmund A. and Wilhelmina (Sievers) Poppe, and died Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

She started school at the age of four and a half to keep the rural school running. The first two years at Nashua High School she walked six miles home in the summer and roomed in town in the winter. Through High School she played the trombone and in the summer she played in the town band.

In 1945 she married George J. Ellis and lived on his farm north of Greene. To this marriage was born a daughter Mildred. In February of 1948 they got word that they would be getting electricity. George Ellis was trimming a tree getting ready for electricity and a large limb broke knocking the ladder down and the limb on top of him killing him.

The next 14 years she was able to raise her daughter Mildred. They did a lot of traveling all over the United States, Canada, and Europe. She was also involved as a 4H leader; church worker at St. Peter as Sunday School and Bible School teacher, Women of the Church officer, adult Bethel Teacher , in Vision Circle, visiting the sick, the shut-ins, and inviting others to come to Church. She was very active in the community of Greene as president of Federated Women’s Club, president of Handicraft club, on various Women’s Club committees, Garden Club; and a member of a special prayer group.

In 1963 she remarried to George Menken and moved back on the farm. With this marriage came two step-children Galen (Carol) Menken and Lois (Jim) Babcock and grandchildren.

After moving back to the farm she enjoyed farming; raising ducks, geese, chickens and lambs.

She planted trees, shrubs, and perennial flower, each year planting something and trying to see what would grow. She planted black walnut, pecans, and peach trees from seed. She also planted mammoth and native hickory nut, butternut, sugar maple, and black oak trees, fruits; apples, plum, grapes, raspberries, gooseberries and currants, She always had a large garden and did a lot of canning and baking. She always said that you needed to plant two trees for every one that is taken down.

She was married to George Menken for more than 20 years. He died in 1988.

She took care of her mother Wilhelmina Poppe for several years. They enjoyed making quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She enjoyed walking with the exercise group at the high school.

In 2005 she moved to Cedar Vale Assisted living in Nashua (that was built on the land that her mother lived on for many years) because of declining health. In 2011 she moved to Liebe Care Center.

Living family members include her daughter Mildred (Jim) Deike, Greene, stepson Galen (Carol) Menken, Greene, and stepdaughter Lois (Jim) Babcock, Pueblo, CO

Theresa A. Baumler dies at 91

Theresa A. Baumler, age 91, of Fort Atkinson, died on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, with Rev. Nick March presiding.  Burial will be in St. Luke’s Catholic Cemetery, St. Lucas. 

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, and also after 9 a.m., on Friday morning at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel, 201 Main Street, in Fort Atkinson. 

Theresa Ann (Franzen) Baumler was born on October 31, 1921, the daughter of Joseph Sr. and Kathrina (Boyer) Franzen, Theresa was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas and attended school in St. Lucas.  Theresa married Raymond H. Baumler on June 24, 1940, in St. Lucas, and to this union, fourteen children were born.  Together they farmed near St. Lucas for many years until Ray’s death. In 1982, she moved into Fort Atkinson.  Theresa will be remembered for her quilts, pot holders and for her baked goods, especially her homemade bread.  She loved to play cards and Chinese checkers.  She was a wonderful mother and her greatest joy was hearing her children laugh.  Theresa was an active member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, St. John’s Catholic Church, and the Fort Atkinson Senior Citizen Club.  In 2004, Theresa received the Governor’s Volunteer Award. 

Theresa is survived by her twelve children: William Baumler, Ossian; Dale (Mick) Baumler, Anamosa; Dennis (Pat) Baumler, St. Lucas; Darlene (Gene) Olberding, Dyersville; Irene (Donald) Lynch, New Hampton; Daniel Baumler, St. Lucas; Glen (Hopper) Baumler, Fort Atkinson; Jay (Renee) Baumler, Irvine, Calif; Leon (Gail) Baumler, St. Lucas; Ann (Dean) Schaufenbuel, St. Lucas; John (Anjie) Baumler, Buckner, MO; and Terry (Carl) Schmitt, Fort Atkinson;  along with thirty-five grandchildren, forty-five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.  Siblings: Carl Franzen, Irvin Franzen, Francis Franzen, Helen (Ronald) Palmersheim, LeRoy (JoAnn) Franzen.  Sisters-in-law: Marion Franzen and Eleanora Franzen.  

Theresa was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph Sr. and Kathrina (Boyer) Franzen, Her husband: Raymond “Ray” Baumler in 1981.  Two children: Theresa Ann in infancy in 1944 and Nancy Havel in 2007.  Three grandchildren: Sarah Olberding in 1979, Jeanna Lynch in 2007, and Joseph Baumler in 2010.  One son-in-law: Joseph Schirmer in 1971 and one daughter-in-law: Shirley Baumler in 1978.  Siblings: Catherine (Roy) Tierney, Marie (Lawrence) Bruening, Leonard (Mary) Franzen, Raymond Franzen, Theckla Franzen in infancy, Louis (Arlene) Franzen, and Lawrence (Pat) Franzen. Vernon Stuart Swinton dies at 83

Vernon Stuart Swinton, 83, of Waverly, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospital, after suffering a stroke.

Vernon was born on May 5, 1929, near Charles City, the son of Fred and Hattie (Knutson) Swinton.  He attended school in Nashua and Plainfield, graduating in 1948.  Vernon was a lifelong dairy and crop farmer, north of Waverly, until retiring in 2002.  Following retirement, he worked at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Waverly, as a maintenance engineer.

Vernon was confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Nashua, and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly, in which he was a long time, faithful volunteer.  He was a kind, hardworking and giving person.  He enjoyed attending sporting events for his children and grandchildren.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Donna (Niemeyer) Swinton; daughter, Sandra (Terri Davis) Swinton of Waverly; son, Scot “Opie” (Lori) Swinton of Waverly, Teri Sanders; eight grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; siblings, Doris White of Emmetsburg, Donald (Dorothy) Swinton of Waverly, Herbert Swinton of Waverly, Maurice (Alice) Swinton of Dixson, IL, Helen Ascher of Clarksville, Lois Brodt of Waverly, and Roger (Marlys) Swinton of Shell Rock; sister-in-law Bernice Swinton of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Swinton; granddaughter, Kendra Swinton; his parents; sisters, Mildred Schulz,  Wilma Breand, and Alfreeda Albaur; and brothers, Harold, Willard,  and Dale.

Vernon’s body has been cremated, and visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, from 5 to 7 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly.   On Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at 10:30 am, there will be a luncheon and time of fellowship at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, to celebrate Vernon’s life.   A private family committal service, with pastors Val Swinton and Curt Schneider officiating, will be held on a later date at Harlington Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.

Ernest C. Ferch age 66 of Nashua died Thursday, December 13, 2012, at his home.

Ernest Charles Ferch was born December 27, 1945, in Charles City, IA, the son of Leland and Dorothy Mae (Delap) Ferch. He received his education in Charles City and graduated from the Charles City High School in 1964. He served as a Military Policeman in the United States Army for two years and was honorably discharged. On November 8, 1969, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, he married Shirley Billings of Charles City. To this union three children were born. The couple initially lived in Charles City and Bassett before purchase their acreage north of Nashua in 1971. He had worked for many years at Skyline Harvester until the company closed. He then worked in maintenance and the foundry at F & H Aluminum in Charles City. His health forced his early retirement in 2006. He was an avid stock car racer, and also performed in several demolition derbys and figure-eight races. He loved hunting, playing cards and Nascar. He will be remembered by his family for being a terrific mechanic and his dedication to work.

Survivors include his former wife, Shirley of Nashua; two sons, Aaron Ferch, Adam (Amber) Ferch, all of Nashua; one daughter, Renee (David) Williams of Alta Vista; six grandchildren, Austin Ferch, Ashley Ferch, Adrianna Ferch, Zachary Ferch, Charles Edward Williams and Carly Harper; one brother, Darrell (Jane Marie) Ferch of Charles City; two sisters, Darla (Roger) Throndson of Galveston, TX, Debra (James) Willner of Wells, MN.

Ervin Joseph Sabelka dies at 96

Ervin Joseph Sabelka, age 96, of New Hampton, died on Monday, Dec. 17, 2012 (on his birthday) at New Hampton Nursing and Rehab in New Hampton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at Holy Family Parish – St. Mary’s Center in New Hampton.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery at New Hampton, with Paul Sabelka, Billy Buckridge, Loran Steinlage, Gary Steinlage, Luigi Rausch and Ron Sabelka serving as casket bearers.

Visitation will be 4 -7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 22, 2012 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton, with a scriptural wake service at 6 p.m.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home the day of the service.

Ervin J. Sabelka was born Dec. 17, 1916 in rural Chickasaw County son of Joseph and Mary (Adank) Sabelka.  He married Wilma Riehle on January 22, 1940 at. St. Wencelaus Church in Spillville.  He attended Chickasaw County Schools and farmed near Reilly Ridge before retiring to New Hampton in 1988.  He and Wilma liked to travel by bus, he was an avid gardner, liked to fish and was a Funks G seed corn salesman.  Ervin entered New Hampton Nursing and Rehab in March 2004.

Ervin is survived by his wife Wilma of 72 years; one son Joe (MaryJo) Sabelka of Lawler; three daughters Leona (Florian) Steinlage of West Union; Linda (Bob) Buckridge of Waterloo and Laure (Bob) Rausch of Fort Atkinson; one daughter-in-law Norma Sabelka of Lawler; 19 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one sister Ethel Maracheck of Cresco.

He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Mary Sabelka; one son Bill Sabelka; two great granddaughters Haley and Hana Buchheit; one brother Jerome Sabelka; four sisters Eileen Cooney; Florence Shileny; Angeline Riehle and Margaret Balk.

Louann C. Kleiss dies at 78

Louann C. Kleiss age 78 of Fredericksburg died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, surrounded by her family at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. 

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at Peace United Church of Christ, Fredericksburg with Pastor Burt Williams presiding. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg with Dustin Kleiss, Adam Kleiss, Samuel Kleiss, Timothy Kleiss, Sheriton Dettmer and Lucas Lenhart serving as pallbearers. 

Friends may greet the family 2 - 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church. 

Louann Clara Kleiss was born June 16, 1934, in Sumner, the youngest child of Ernst and Clara (Bruns) Boedeker. Her mother died when she was two years old and was raised by aunts and a sister in the area. She was a 1952 graduate of the Fredericksburg High School where she met the love of her life, Hadwen Kleiss. 

On February 15, 1953, at the Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg, she married Hadwen Arnold Kleiss. To this union three sons were born. For over 59 years, Louann was an integral part and a cornerstone to Stardell and HMCI farms near Fredericksburg. She was extremely skilled at milking cows and bookkeeping. Louann made everything run smoothly. Louann was driven and full of energy and pursued excellence from keeping track of the herd to keeping her husband well dressed. She will be remembered by her family as a great wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and farmer. 

Louann was an active member of the Peace Church having been president of the Ladies Circles, a president of the ‘Stop & Go Club’, a winner of the Distinguished Holstein Breeder Award, was a member of the Holstein Auxiliary and the Chickasaw County Women’s Pork Producers. Louann had served on the Dairy Day Board and was active in supporting the local school house project. 

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Hadwen; three sons, Dale (Judy) Kleiss of New Hampton, Doug (Lisa) Kleiss, Gene Kleiss, all of Fredericksburg; eight grandchildren, Dustin (Emily) Kleiss of Lawler, Kaity Kleiss (Brad Theis) of Alexandria, VA, Emily (Lucas) Lenhart of Iowa City, Adam (Kayln) Kleiss of Fredericksburg, Sally Kleiss (Ben Timmer), Samuel Kleiss, Timothy Kleiss, all of Cedar Falls, Sheriton (Liza) Dettmer of Fredericksburg; three great-grandchildren, Harper Lenhart, Luis Rivera and Damian Rivera; one brother, Paul (Evelyn) Boedeker of Fredericksburg. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, Margaret Boedeker; one sister, Marion Boedeker; one brother, Roland Boedeker.

Barb K. Lawson age 74 of Nashua, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at the Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Barb K. Lawson was born November 17, 1938, in Fairfield, the daughter of Harold and Jeanette (Wichart) Buchanan. Barb was raised on a farm and she received her education in rural country school near Libertyville, IA. While working as a waitress in Fairfield, she met a customer and the future love of her life. On June 30, 1956, in Kahoka, MO, she married Thomas M. Lawson. To this union six children were born. Barb was a full-time mother and caretaker for her continuing growing family. She loved cooking and baking and making sure the holidays were special for her family. A very memorable trip was a ‘late honeymoon’ she and Thomas took to the western United States visiting Yellowstone National Park. She especially enjoyed watching and spending time with her grandchildren.  

Survivors include five daughters, Linda Lawson (Ray Bryan) of Horton, Nancy (John) Birmingham, Sheryl Rollins, Judy (Chris) Lee, all of Nashua, Joyce (Travis) Bohy of Eagle Grove; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Donna Lankford of Sac City. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on November 5, 1995; a daughter, Sandra Lawson in infancy and a step-son, Keith Brown. 


 

John F. Schnurr dies at 88

John F. Schnurr, 88, of Mason City, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.

John was born February 6, 1924 in New Hampton, the son of Art and Lillian (Roarty) Schnurr.  He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1942.  Football and basketball were his favorite team sports.  He was a member of the First Team All-Conference North East Iowa Football League during his junior and senior years of high school.  He continued his education at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska on a football scholarship where he was a member of the final Creighton Bluejay’s football team.  John also played basketball for Creighton.  He enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 and attended Officer’s Training School at St. Ambrose College in Davenport and DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.  He served on the USS Rawlins in the South Pacific during WW II, and was honorably discharged in 1946.  John married Wilma Klassen May 2, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer.  John and Wilma resided in Spencer, Oelwein, and Mason City where John served as a senior partner with Arnold Motor Supply.  He was also a member of the Arnold Motor Supply and Merrill Company Advisory Board.  He was known for his wit and “one-liners” that put a smile on everyone’s face.  John was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and attended many post season bowl games.  He was also a Golden Hawk member of the University of Iowa I-Club for many years.  After retiring in 1993, he and his wife Wilma traveled extensively throughout the world and enjoyed many adventures.  They spent most winters in Fountain Hills, Arizona.  His special interests included fishing, walking along the Wapsie River while duck hunting with his greyhounds Tanna and Blue Belle, golfing, boating, snowmobiling and traveling.  He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, American Legion, and the Mason City Country Club. 

John is survived by his wife Wilma of 63 years; daughter, Christina “Tina” Schnurr (Robert Lemon) of Mason City; sisters-in-law, Helen Schnurr of Lawler, Marg (Jim) Ashley of Bassett, Mary Ashley of Charles City, and Bonita (Larry) Boggess of Charles City; brother-in-law, William (Faye) Klassen of Ionia; nieces and nephews, Pam (Harvey) Schmitt of Raleigh, North Carolina, Paula Schnurr of Cedar Rapids, and Larry (Mary) Schnurr of Mason City; aunt, Marjorie Ferry of Lafayette, Louisiana; many special cousins.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian who passed away when John was one week old; father, Art; sister, Virginia Clem in infancy; brother, Walter; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends, and his beloved poodle, Jocko.

Robert (Bob) Soukup dies at 69

Robert (Bob) Soukup, age 69 of New Hampton, lost his 12-year battle with cancer on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at his Arizona home with his wife at his side.

Bob was born to Harry and Clara (Busta) Soukup on Sept. 15, 1943, in New Hampton.

He attended New Hampton Schools, graduating in 1961. He was a well-respected athlete, excelling in football, basketball and baseball.

In 1964, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. It was determined by military doctors that his Non-Hodgkin lymphoma was a result of his exposure to Agent Orange during that service. He was first diagnosed in 2000 and fought hard for twelve years with the help of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.

Bob and Betty Leuenberger were married in 1968 by Father Carpenter in Fairbank. They were blessed with three children: Hans Peter, Zachary Jon and Sybil Brooke.

He worked various jobs in the New Hampton area until 1987 when he joined the staff of Congressman Dave Nagle. He then worked in Des Moines for U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin and this led to his appointment by President Clinton to be the Midwest Region director for the United States Department of Agriculture. Following Al Gore's defeat in 2000, Bob became the economic development director for his beloved City of New Hampton.

His devotion to his hometown is reflected through numerous city parks, the ice skating rink, baseball field and many successful businesses and industries. Two of his proudest accomplishments were securing federal dollars for the Highway 63 expansion and seeing his tireless efforts lead to Progress Casting locating in New Hampton and employing 150 of his fellow citizens.

Left to cherish Bob's memorable life are his wife Betty; daughter Sybil Soukup, Clear Lake; sons Hans (Peggy) Soukup, Eau Claire, WI; Zachary Soukup, St. Louis, MO; and three precious grandchildren who gave him enormous pleasure: Carson Soukup, Taylor Soukup, Brooke Soukup. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Bill Straw, New Hampton and nieces Christine Straw and Stephanie Maske.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Ruth (Soukup) Straw; Margaret (Soukup) Hoge; and numerous aunts and uncles.

In honor of his wishes, his remains were cremated in Arizona and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held in New Hampton at a later date. John William Chenoweth III dies at 72

John William Chenoweth III, of Estero, Fla., died on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, after a mighty battle against pancreatic cancer. John fought to the end and passed peacefully with his wife, Susan by his side.

John was born Oct. 5, 1940, in Bethany, Mo., to the late Dr. John William Chenoweth and Dorothy Chenoweth.

John grew up in Harrison County, Mo., where he attended the same school for 12 years.

John served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve.

John was married to Barbara Jane Noe in 1961.

He received his undergraduate college degree from Northwest Missouri State University in 1963 and subsequently a master of accounting from the University of Kansas.

Professionally, John was a certified public accountant.

In 1978, John and his family moved to Florida. For 17 years he was the regional reimbursement manager for the Humana Hospital Group. John then became engaged in several business and professional ventures.

After a prolonged illness, Barbara passed in 2007.

John married Susan Carol (Misner) Chenoweth in 2009. John spent his final year’s actively embracing life by dancing, traveling, riding his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycle and playing golf.

John is survived by his wife, Susan; children, Brooke Ann Chenoweth and Brian Scott Chenoweth, both residing in Hollywood, Calif.; and sister, Tyra Seymour of Palm Desert, Calif.

John was preceded by his parents and brother, Scott Chenoweth.

A memorial service will be held at the Estero Methodist Church, 8088 Lords Way Street, Estero, Florida 33928, on Thursdsay, Jan. 4, 2013 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Joanne’s House at Hope Hospice, 27200 Imperial Parkway, Bonita Springs, Florida 34135, or your local hospice.


Richard "Dick" Allen Stolfus Sr. dies at 67

Richard "Dick" Allen Stolfus Sr. age 67 of Lawler, died Saturday evening, Dec. 29, 2012, at his home.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton with Rev. Kevin Frey officiating. Private family interment will be held at a later date.

John Kraft, Colton Kraft, Gatlin Kraft, John Huber, Richard Stolfus and Michael Stolfus will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Archie Trower and John Rosonke. Full military honors will be conducted by the New Hampton American Legion and VFW.

Friends may greet the family 3 - 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Online condolences for Dick's family may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.com

Richard "Dick" Allen Stolfus Sr. was born April 17, 1945, in New Hampton, IA, the son of Herbert "Barney" and Ella Mae (Ingalls) Stolfus. He received his education in New Hampton. In 1965, he was inducted into the United States Army and served in Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged in September of 1967. On March 20, 1967, at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton he married the love of his life, Diane Munson. To this union two sons were born. Dick worked for over 41 years at the former Supersweet Feeds Company in New Hampton. Dick considered himself a simple man who worked hard and enjoyed his family and the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and could be found outside at anytime of the year.

Survivors include his wife of over 45 years, Diane; two sons, Richard (Marilou) Stolfus of Lawler and Michael (Elmar) Stolfus of Ft. Irwin, Calif; three grandchildren, Elijah Stolfus, Jaden Stolfus and Angel Marie Stolfus; his mother-in-law, Betty Munson of New Hampton; one brother, Edward (Val) Stolfus of Sumner; two sisters, Janice Hesse of Sumner and Darise (Jim) Donat of Maynard; four sisters-in-law, Helen Stolfus of Fredericksburg, Linda Stolfus of New Hampton, Joan Stolfus of Utah and Shirley Stolfus of Fla; one aunt, Betty Ingalls of New Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Lowell Stolfus, Lyle Stolfus, Herbert Stolfus and Loran Stolfus.
