LuAnn M. Glaser dies at 50

LuAnn M. Glaser, age 50, of New Hampton, died on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011 at her home surrounded by her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 at Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph’s Center in New Hampton with Fr. Mark Osterhaus celebrating.  Active casket bearers will be LuAnn’s brothers and sister.  Honorary casket bearers will be LuAnn’s coworkers at First Citizens National Bank of New Hampton.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Alta Vista at a later date.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 from 3-8 p.m. with a scriptural wake service at 4 p.m. at the Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton.  Visitation will continue on Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the service.  Friends may leave condolences for LuAnn’s family at www.conway-markhamfh.com.

LuAnn Marie Heying was born on October 19, 1961 to Francis “Mike” and Arlene (Schwickerath) Heyingin New Hampton.  LuAnn attended school in New Hampton graduatingfrom New Hampton High School in 1980.  She started working at Alta Vista State Bank immediately following high school for several years before transferring to First Citizens National Bank in New Hampton where she has been employed to the present.  LuAnn loved life, fishing, the outdoors, family, friends, her work and coworkers.  She always wanted to be on the go and she never gave up.  She was a member of St. Joseph Center – Holy Family Parish.


LuAnn is survived by her parents, Francis “Mike” and Arlene Heying of Alta Vista; daughters Tiffany Glaser (Brian Fisher) of Nashua, Tara Glaser (Mitchel Hardy) of Waterloo, and Kelsey Glaser of New Hampton; grandchildren Josslynn Glaser, Trevin Hardy, and Elizabeth and Bailey Fisher; Special friend Matt Beckman and his sons Jacob and Tyler of New Hampton; sister Shari (Dale) Blocker of Ionia; brothers Roger (Irene) Heying, Larry (Cindy) Heying, Greg (Nancy) Heying, Ken (Luann) Heying and Randy (Jenn) Heying all of New Hampton, Don (Jackie) Heying of Byron, Minnesota and Michael (Dawn) Heying of Ionia; special niece Missy (Scott) Hackman of New Hampton; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by one brother Edward Heying and her paternal and maternal grandparents.


Robert J. Mussehl dies at 89

Robert J. Mussehl age 89 of Nashua died Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at the Muse-Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at St. John Lutheran Church, Nashua with military interment honors in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua.

Leonard J. Goodrich dies at 85

Leonard J. Goodrich age 85 of Fredericksburg died Saturday morning, Nov. 26, 2011, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Fredericksburg with Pastor Shirley Will officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg.

Leonard John Goodrich was born June 29, 1926, on the Goodrich family farm, southwest of Fredericksburg, the only child of Leonard Earl and Ollie (Reay) Goodrich. He received his education in Fredericksburg and was a 1944 graduate of the Fredericksburg High School. On May 2, 1948, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, he married Betty A. Fisher. To this union four children were born. Leonard and Betty raised their family and farmed southwest of Fredericksburg. In 1976, they moved into Fredericksburg where Leonard drove truck for both the Woodring and Drewelow fur farms. Betty died on June 14, 2004 at the age of 74. Leonard enjoyed his grandchildren, farming, chatting with friends, reading newspapers and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes.


Survivors include three sons; Roger (Pat) Goodrich of Frederika; Allan (Diana) Goodrich, Dale (Denise) Goodrich, all of Fredericksburg; one daughter, Jean Hicks of Waverly; thirteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son-in-law; Denny Hicks.



Robert 'Bob' Clites dies at 83

Robert "Bob" Clites, age 83 of New Hampton, went to heaven on Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center, Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 28, 2011, at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed on the casket by his wife and four children. Kathy Beckman will be the lector and the offertory gifts will be presented by Dave and Paula Clites and their children, Niki Fielder and Brian Clites. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Hampton with Brian Clites, Ross Burgart, Jay Clites, Brad Wylam, Noah Clites, Niki Fielder, Erica Clites and Cara Clites serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are the New Hampton Mayor and City Council, Harry Zipse;, Duane Wheat, and IDOT staff; Stan Perkins, Bob Beckman, Dan Steenhard, Brenda Steenhard, George Feazel, Steve Timmerman and Glen Uglum. Military honors will be conducted by the New Hampton American Legion and V.F.W. Posts.

Robert Leonard Clites was born April 5, 1928, in New Hampton, IA, the only son of Leonard and Ora (Jacobson) Clites. He received his education in New Hampton and was a 1946 graduate of the New Hampton High School. Bob served in the United States Marine Corp as a corporal from 1946 – 1948. On October 23, 1950, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Hampton, he married Geraldine “Geri” Paulson. To this union four children were born. He had worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation beginning in 1948 and retiring in 1992. On September 10, 2002, his wife, Geri died at the age of 70. On November 28, 2003, at Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph Center in New Hampton he married Diana Crooks-Reams. Bob was an active New Hampton resident having served on the City Council from 1986 until present. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, on the Landfill Board, the AFSCME Council 61, INRCOG Board member and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling to see his children and grandchildren, attended spring training baseball in Florida and enjoyed all sports.


Survivors include his wife, Diana; three sons, Greg (Anne) Clites of Ann Arbor, MI; Dave (Paula) Clites of Lakewood, CO, Dan (Deb) Clites of Garner, IA; one daughter, Cathy (David) Wylam of Waverly; three step-daughters, Danette (Jim) Kukkendal of Charles City, Dawn (Jeff) Hawbaker of Floyd, Dixie (Luke) Blickenderfer of Floyd; eight grandchildren; five step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; three sisters, Lorraine (Neal) “Tucker” Flatjord of New Hampton, Lucille (Vernon) Johnson of Rochester, MN, Joan (Chuck) Vikdal of New Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Geri.


Erma Oriette Johnson dies at 80

Erma Oriette Johnson, age 80 of Fredericksburg, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. 

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 25, 2011 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg with Pastor Ronnie Koch officiating.  Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg with Tyler Schmitz, Spencer Schmitz and Peyton Schmitz serving as honorary casket bearers. Active casket bearers will be Ryan Steege, Alex Steege, Andra Johnson, Lisa Haugen, Kara Haugen, Jamie Steege and AlissaJohnson. 

Friends may greet the family from 4 - 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton.  Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Erma Oriette Johnson was born December 2, 1930, on the family farm north of New Hampton, the daughter of Clarence and Cora (Sanderson) Haugen. She received her education in New Hampton and was a graduate of the New Hampton High School Class of 1948.  On November 11, 1951, at Crane Creek Lutheran Church, rural Lawler, she married Spencer Johnson.  To this union two children were born.  She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg.  Erma loved children and served many families in the Fredericksburg area with their child care needs.  Many of those children and families became a part of her and Spencer’s extended family.


Erma is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Spencer of Fredericksburg; one son, Larry (Gail) of Butte des Morts, WI; one daughter, Janet (Calvin) Steege of Fredericksburg; one brother, Donald (Betty) Haugen of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Alissa Johnson of Oakland, CA, Ryan (Jamie) Steege of Fredericksburg, Andra Johnson of Richmond, VA, Alex Steege of Cedar Falls; one great-granddaughter, Erin Steege and many very special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Doris Haugen; one brother, Clarence Haugen Jr. and many loving relatives and friends with whom she is now reunited.



Juanita H. Mehmen dies at 86

Juanita H. Mehmen, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Juanita Mehmen will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Pastor Jane Keel will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and Friday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Juanita Helena White Mehmen was born October 10, 1925, at Nashua, the daughter of Matthew and Eva (Guhlow) White.  She graduated from Nashua High School.  On January 23, 1946, she was united in marriage to William Mehmen at Charles City.  Over the years Juanita worked as a cook at various locations.  She was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Saint John Lutheran Women’s Ministries, Ladies Aide Circle and Christian Ones.  Juanita was also past president and currently chaplain of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, first president of Cedar Rock chapter of School Food Service, Heritage Club, Senior Citizens, Christian Ones, Charles City Women’s Club, Moose Lodge and had been a “Pink Lady” at Floyd County Medical Center.


Living family members include three children, Robert Mehmen of Nashua, Galen (Debra) Mehmen of Cedar Rapids and Debra (Jim) Tucker of Windsor Heights; a daughter-in-law, Janie Holub of Swisher; eight grandchildren, Lisa (Chris) Garden, Bill (Beth) Mehmen, Jenifer Mehmen, Brett (Angie) Mehmen, David Mehmen, Eric (Jillian) Faille, Andrew Mehmen and Grant Mehmen; 16 great grandchildren; two sisters, Cleo (Francis) Weisenstein of South Bend, Ind. and Laurel White of Waterloo; three brothers, Gil White, Art (Mary) White and Bruce (Carman) White all of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on February 21, 1994; a son, Terry Mehmen; a grandson, Lance Mehmen; a daughter-in-law, Vicki Mehmen; and a brother, Stanley White.

Conrad John Sabelka dies at 57

Conrad J. Sabelka was called to Heaven to join his mother and father on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011.

He passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Heritage Residence in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday Nov. 26, 2011 at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton with Rev. Nick March presiding. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Reilly Ridge, rural Lawler, with Ralph Sabelka, Antonio Sierra, Mike Knudson, Bruce Clawson, Jack Orvis and Nick Yordanoff serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Staff and Residents of the Heritage Residence of New Hampton.

Conrad John Sabelka was born August 9, 1954, in New Hampton, the oldest child of Julian and Dolora (Hackman) Sabelka. He was baptized into the Catholic Faith at Sacred Heart Church – Reilly Ridge, rural Lawler, where he also received his First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Conrad attended Turkey Valley Community School and also attended special education programs in Fredericksburg and New Hampton. Conrad became a resident of Comprehensive Systems in Charles City in the 1970’s. He then moved to The Heritage Residence in 1988, and they became his second family.

Conrad loved the freedom of life on the farm. He enjoyed listening to music as well as traveling. Each summer he looked forward to a day trip to either Minnesota or Wisconsin. He also enjoyed county fairs and amusement parks. Conrad participated in bowling in the Special Olympics and attended Camp Courageous near Monticello. Conrad dearly loved spending time with his family, especially his mother and father.

Survivors include one brother, Ralph Sabelka of Apple Valley, MN; five sisters, Clarene (Antonia) Sierra of Savage, MN, Madonna (Mike) Knudson of Blair, NE, Doris Sabelka (Bruce Clawson) of Rock Springs, WI, Verna (Jack) Orvis of Lawler and Ellen (Nick) Yordanoff of Pleasant Hill; seven nieces; three nephews; aunts and uncles, Jack (Shirley) Sabelka of Little Turkey, Mary Ann Hackman of Decorah, Hugo Hackman of Fredericksburg, Hilaria Kipp of Festina and Leona Hackman of St. Lucas.

He was preceded in death by his mother, on November 19, 2009; his father, on November 15, 2011; his grandparents, John and Clara (Meier) Sabelka and Henry and Clara (Rausch) Hackman; also several aunts and uncles.


Scott Anthony Doyle dies at 50

Scott Anthony Doyle, age 50, of Marion, died peacefully on Nov. 18, 2011 at his home, after a year long struggle with throat cancer.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Scott will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 at Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph Center in New Hampton, with Father Mark Osterhaus celebrating.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at New Hampton.  Military rites will be provided by the New Hampton American Legion Fae Stine Post 38 and the New Hampton VFW Post 5238.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the St. Joseph Gathering Space on Tuesday. Friends may leave condolences for Scott’s family at www.conway-markhamfh.com.

Scott was born in Dubuque, on August 2,1961 to Donald and Cecilia Doyle.  After school he joined the Army Reserve in Decorah and played drums with the Cheyenne band formed by Scott and his brothers Mike and Brian. Scott worked in construction and later moved to Marion, to be closer to his parents and be able to help them whenever necessary.


Just as Scott helped them, his mom and aunt (Sister Marie Barth of the Presentation Sisters), have given Scott the best possible care over his last few weeks. And gracious thanks to the crew of nurses and doctors from Saint Luke’s and hospice workers that helped above and beyond.  Scott was blessed with the lifetime friendship of Brent Nordhus and Shirley Koshatka.

Scott is survived by his mother Cecilia of Marion; brothers Mike (Pam) Doyle of Texas, Brian (Bonnie) Doyle of Montana and Chris (Kathy) Doyle of Cedar Falls; sister Donna (John) Burgart of New Hampton.

Scott was preceded in death by a brother Patrick and his father Donald, paternal grandparents Jerome and Marie and maternal grandparents Fred and Veronica. 

Scott will be missed by all of us for his kindness, his ability to listen, and his generosity.


Mary (Mahoney) Roethler dies at 81

Mary (Mahoney) Roethler, age 81 of rural Nashua, Iowa died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Ionia, with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass.   The pall will be placed on the casket by her children and serving as lectors will be Sr. Carla Popes P.B.V.M.,  Theresa Buss and Mike Mahoney.  Presenting the offertory gifts are Collen Mahoney, Maggie Mahoney, Megan Mahoney, Kara Buss, Audrey Maynard, Lindsey Tilkes, Lisa Tilkes and Michelle Reicks.

Mary Elizabeth (Mahoney) Roethler was born Feb.21, 1930, in Charles City, the daughter of Carl and Laura (Merfeld) Popes.  She attended rural county school and was a 1948 graduate of the Nashua High School.  On February 8, 1949, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua, she married James B. Mahoney.  To this union eleven children were born.  The couple farmed south of Ionia for over fifty years.  Mary raised her family on the farm and enjoyed having large vegetable and flower gardens, raising chickens and loved to host large family get-togethers.  On July 30, 2001,  James Mahoney died at the age of 74.  On October 2, 2003, she married Herb Roethler of Ionia who died this year on May 9.

Mary enjoyed quilting, playing bingo, cards and had been a longtime volunteer at the food pantry in Nashua.  The St. Catholic Boniface Church in Ionia was important to Mary, as she was a very active member throughout her life.  She will be remembered as a loving and generous person, who was always there to lend a hand to those in need.

Survivors include five daughters, Susan (Bob) Kriener of Brooklyn, Theresa (Brad) Buss of Waverly,  Virgene “Jean” (Neal) Huegel of New Hampton, Laureen (Dean) Nelson of Plainview, MN, Kathy (Randy) Mitchell of New Hampton; six sons, Stephen (Sue) Mahoney of Ionia, Patrick (Judy) Mahoney of Kersey, CO, Michael (Brenda) Mahoney of Nashua, Phillip (Mary) Mahoney of New Hampton, Timothy (Rose) Mahoney of Martinsville, IN and  Matthew (Marie) Mahoney of Ionia; thirty three grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; one brother, Glen (Billie) Popes of New Jersey; two sisters, Rita (Charlie) Swinton of Nashua, and Sr. Carla Popes P.B.V.M. of Strawberry Point.

 She was preceded in death by her parents;  both husbands; two grandchildren, Christopher Kriener and Jennifer Mahoney; one brother, Howard Popes; one sister, Patty Shimek.


Theodore E. "Ted" Steege dies at 91

Theodore E. "Ted" Steege age 91 of Fredericksburg died Tuesday evening, Nov. 15, 2011, at the New Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg with Pastor Burt Williams officiating. Yvonne Lienau will be the organist accompanying the congregation singing, “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Rock of Ages”.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg with T.J. Steege, Darcy Fair, Luke Steege, Nicole Steege, Blake Steege and Steven Chambers as pallbearers.

Theodore Erwin Steege was born August 12, 1920, in rural Fredericksburg, Iowa the son of Theodore John and Elizabeth Ruth (Mohling) Steege. He was baptized and confirmed at the Peace Evangelical Church in Fredericksburg. Ted received his education from Rural Country School and the Fredericksburg High School, graduating in 1938.

On September 29, 1940, at Peace Evangelical Church in Fredericksburg, Ted was united in marriage to Jean Chambers. To this union one son, Theodore Steege III, was born on the family farm. Ted raised livestock and farmed his entire life. He was a former member of the Church Board, Chickasaw County Farm Bureau Board, Farmers Butter and Dairy Board, Fredericksburg School Board, Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors, Fredericksburg Development Board, nominated as Grand Dairyman in 1982, member of the Fredericksburg Lions and the Plum Creek Golf Course.

He enjoyed bowling, traveling, fishing and playing cards. In his later years he loved to watch Chicago Cubs Baseball.

Ted is survived by one son, Theodore Steege III and his wife Karen of Fredericksburg; three grandchildren, T.J. Steege of Fredericksburg, Luke (Kim) Steege of Prescott Valley, AZ and Darcy (Steffen) Fair of Elma; ten great-grandchildren, Nicole, Blake and McKenzie Steege of Fredericksburg, Sully, Watson, O’Malley, Ryder, Tillotti, and Fennegan Fair of Elma, Karsten Steege of Prescott Valley, AZ; one sister, Ella Nelson of New Hampton; brother and sister-in-laws, Keith (Marlene) Chambers of Denver

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean on August 18, 2007; three brothers, Laurence, Everett and John Steege; two sisters, Olinda Weidler and Lenore Dresch.



Carol Anne Hoffman dies at 64

Carol Anne Hoffman, age 64, of Alta Vista, died on Monday, Nov. 14, 2011 at her home in Alta Vista.

Funeral services for Carol will be 10:30 a.m, Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista, with Pastor Vincent Fricke officiating.  Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Alta Vista.

Visitation will be from 4 - 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday.

Carol Anne Olson was born on July 2, 1947 to Ralph “Pal” and Eileen Olson in Sioux City.  She attended school in Osceola.  Carol was united in marriage to Richard Brand in Osceola, and to this union three children were born.  She latermet and married Carl Hoffman on December 15, 1970 in Missouri.  The family moved to Alta Vista in 1978 where she has lived ever since.  Carol surveyed for Northern Natural Gas pipeline for several years.  Later,Carol was employed as a clerk at the Corner Station in Alta Vista.  She enjoyed reading, Scrabble, Facebook, playing cards, especially spending time with family and being “Granny” to all her grandkids, related and not.

Carol is survived by her three children, Barb (Jim) McAvoy of Alta Vista; Clem (Sandi) Brand of Indianola, and Jenny (Pat) Carroll of Russell,  her grandchildren, Mandi and Levi McAvoy, Justin, Jeremy and Jordan Brand and Ashleigh, James and Carlee Carroll; one great-grandson, Knyle Dotts; one sister, Jeannie (Keith) Hansen of Greeley, NE; brothers, Gary Olson of Meridian, MS, Bobby (Pam) Olson of Evening Shade, AR and Ralph Olson of Midland, TX and special sister-in-law, Joanne (Melton) Kinney of Bunker Hill, WV.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Carl.
