Jean Elizabeth McKnight O'Connor dies at 89

Published: Monday, April 25, 2011 4:35 PM CDT

Jean Elizabeth McKnight O'Connor was born on October 10, 1921 in Iowa City, to Hazel and Rufus McKnight, and died on April 22, 2011 in Brookfield, Wisconsin, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Her survivors include Catherine (Dale, deceased 2008) Zeien of Omro, Wisconsin; Daniel (Richard) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Peg Hotchkiss of Bolingbrook, Illinois; Mary (John) Fleckenstein of Olympia, Washington; Terri (Glenn) Geisberger of Brookfield, Wisconsin; Maureen (Don) Barnosky of Edwardsburg, Michigan; and Patrick (Wu Man) of Eugene, Oregon; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward (1994).

Jean was born and raised in Iowa City. Her father died when she was just nine years old. No small part of her personality came from being raised by her very strong, independent mother, who was a noted pianist at the University of Iowa.

Jean was also a musician. In High School, she placed second in the National Cello Solo Contest. She earned admission to the Eastman School of Music to study cello. As an adult, she taught piano in New Hampton and Davenport. Her musical genes passed through the generations; many of her children and grandchildren excel in instrumental music.

She spent her early adult years in Washington, D. C. During the War, she worked at the First Special Services Force – a joint WWII American-Canadian commando unit.

Jean married her childhood friend, Edward Francis O'Connor, in 1945. The family was raised in Iowa, primarily in New Hampton (1959-1972) and Davenport (1972–2006). She was an accomplished homemaker, and created many works of love through her needlework, sewing, knitting and quilting. At the ripe old age of 84, Jean moved to Milwaukee to be closer to family. This proud Democrat was known by her Milwaukee friends and neighbors as “Iowa," due to her many stories of Iowa.

A funeral mass was held at St. Mary Catholic Faith Community in Hales Corners, Wisconsin on Monday, April 25. Burial is at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City.

Memorials to the family, which will be used for a cello scholarship for a graduating senior in Iowa City's City High School, will be appreciated.
