LORRAINE HELEN LOHR
May 29, 1921 - January 23, 2014

Lorraine Helen Lohr, age 92, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Edward and Viola (Smith) Homan on May 29, 1921, on a farm in Franklin County Iowa.

Due to the Depression, the family made a succession of moves, to Iowa Falls, Ackley and Parkersburg, Iowa. Lorraine graduated from the Parkersburg High School in 1939. She stayed on for a year of Post graduate work, helping to establish the first school library.

The following two years she attended Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls, graduating in 1942 having obtained an Elementary Teaching Certifi cate. She then taught school in Avery, Shell Rock and Colfax, Iowa.

On December 2, 1944, Lorraine was united in marriage with Robert Lohr at Tremont Temple in Boston, Massachusetts, where Bob was currently stationed while serving in the United States Navy. To this union four sons were born, James, Robert, Thomas and Kenneth. After the war they established their home in Parkersburg, where Bob worked as a Funeral Director and they owned and operated Lohr Furniture Store.

In 1952 Lorraine was disabled by Polio. Lorraine and Bob closed the furniture store in 1981 and moved to Clarksville, Iowa to manage the funeral home for Dick Schwartz where they continued to live until 1989 when they retired and moved back to Parkersburg.

Along with helping out in the furniture store, Lorraine was active in guiding home Bible studies, a member of Sunshine Society, and church librarian in the Calvary Baptist Church where she was a member.

Lorraine died Thursday, January 23, 2014, at Parker Place Retirement Community in Parkersburg of natural causes.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bob Lohr on February 17, 2010; a son, Robert Arthur Lohr in 1954; her parents; one sister, Blanche Dahn; and one brother, Merle Homan.

Lorraine is survived by three sons, James Alan Lohr of Hopkins, MN, Thomas Ronald Lohr of Grimes, IA and Kenneth Edward Lohr of Cedar Falls, IA; and six nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held Monday, January 27, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg with Pastor Joe Romeo offi ciating. Organist was Renise Aswegan. Special music was provided by Tom Teeple as he sang “The Lord’s Prayer” and Roma Ries as she sang “O Love that Wilt Not Let Me Go.” Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg and Tom Blevins, Lyle Huisinga, Jerry Junker, Tom Hoogestraat, Bryon Aswegan and Larry Kluiter served as Casketbearers.

GESINA C. BRINKMAN SCHNEIDERMAN JUNGLING
March 24, 1920 - January 27, 2014

Gesina C. Brinkman Schneiderman Jungling, 93, of Allison, Iowa, passed away Monday, January 27, 2014, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison in Allison, Iowa.

She was born on March 24, 1920, in East Frisia, Germany, to William and Alma (Kampman) Eilers. Gesina attended rural Butler County schools.

She was married to Chris Brinkman in 1941, he preceded her in death; she married William Schneiderman in 1963, he also preceded her in death and she then married Henry Jungling in 1989, he also preceded her in death.

Gesina was a homemaker and worked for the ASC offi ce in Allison for many years. She was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, where she sang in the choir for over thirty years, taught Sunday school, taught Adult Sunday Classes and lead Bible study.

She was involved with the community of Allison and was active in the Legion Auxiliary, where she was passed President. Gesina was on the Butler County Red Cross board, Allison Cancer Society Board and the Allison Library Board.

She is survived by her two sons Mark (Linda) Brinkman of Janesville and Darrel (Janell) Brinkman of Hampton, granddaughter Michelle Lehr of Waterloo and her daughter Shelby Lehr, grandson Kris Brinkman of Waverly, granddaughter Sara Mullinix of Hazleton and her children Dawson Mullinix, Lillian Folsom and Jameson Folsom, sisters Alma (Lester) Bettenga of Clarksville, Grace Arends of Janesville, Margareta March of Oelwein and Adeline Johnson of Clarksville, sister-in-laws Barbara Eilers of Allison, Betty Eilers of Webster City and Georgia Eilers of Clarksville, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Gesina was preceded in death by her parents William and Alma, husbands Chris, William and Henry, brothers Chris Eilers, William Eilers, George Eilers and Edward Eilers.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 29, at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, with Rev. Jeffrey A. Blank officiating. Burial took place in the Allison Cemetery. The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Allison was in charge of the arrangements.

ELIZABETH ANN WEDEKING
March 29, 1936 - January 29, 2014

Elizabeth Ann Wedeking, age 77, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Charles and Katie (Dose) Henning on March 29, 1936, rural Greene, Iowa.

She received her education and graduated from Janesville High School in 1954, where she enjoyed music and played basketball.

On March 28, 1954, Elizabeth was united in marriage with Joe Wedeking. The couple farmed for many years in Butler and Bremer Counties before operating a rental property business.

Elizabeth was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville where she enjoyed singing in the church choir for many years. She loved her family, especially enjoying the grandbabies. She enjoyed working, family birthdays, yellow roses, and listening to and singing to country music. She also enjoyed going to fi gure 8 races and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Elizabeth died Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at the Waverly Health Care Center, in Waverly, Iowa, of natural causes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and six brothers and in-laws, John (Alice), George (Elvera), Andrew, Adolph (Ila), Charlie (Annie) and Rudolph (Annette) Henning, and Clancy Lundberg and Roger George.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband of 59 years, Joe Wedeking of Clarksville; six children: Pamela Hulsey of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Joe (Linda) Wedeking of Clarksville, Brian Wedeking of Clarksville, Wendy (Brad) Cruse of Plainfi eld, Bradley (Aimee) Wedeking of Fruitland, IA, and Jeff (Amy) Wedeking of Clarksville; 12 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren: James, Brittany, and Destiny Hulsey; Katie, Kimberly, and Kori Wedeking; Bethany (Jon) Myers; Brandon and Michael (Jenny) Cruse; Justin (Megan), Nathan, and Alison Wedeking; Brian and Kelli Hinrichs; four great-grandchildren: Jordan, Bailey, and Jenna Myers; and Reagan Wedeking; two brothers: Harold (Margaret) Henning of Shell Rock; and Bill (Jean) Henning of Waverly; and three sisters: Alice Lundberg of Waverly; Jennie Henning of Waverly; and Ann George of Waterloo.

Private family funeral services were held Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, with Pastor Jesse Tink officiating. Pianist was Linda Miller and special prelude music was provided by Bill Henning. Vocalist, Renee Tink sang “And He Touched Me” and “The Long Journey Home”. Burial was held at Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville with James Hulsey, Brandon Cruse, Michael Cruse, Brian Hinrichs, Justin Wedeking, Nathan Wedeking and Jordan Myers serving as Casketbearers.

DORIS JOHNSON
February 24, 1928 - January 30, 2014

Doris Ardean Johnson, age 85, of Allison, Iowa, was born the daughter of Henry and Helen (Wubbena) Frey on February 24, 1928 at home in rural Allison, Iowa.

She was baptized into the Christian faith at Fairview Evangelical Church, rural Allison. She received her education from Ripley Township School near her home. She was confi rmed at the Kesley Presbyterian Church, Kesley, Iowa.

On October 29, 1947, Doris was united in marriage to Lawrence Johnson at the Kesley Presbyterian Church in Kesley. They made their home and farmed south of Allison. This union was blessed with three children, Ronald, Larry and Wendell. Doris was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison. She enjoyed going trout fi shing with her family. They brought a special joy to her life and she treasured being a part of their lives. In her spare time she enjoyed quilting, crocheting and gardening.

She was a wonderful, wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother who devoted her life to care for them.

Doris died Thursday, January 30, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinic in Iowa City, Iowa, from natural causes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence on March 30, 2013; a granddaughter, Carissa Capper; and her parents, Henry and Helen Frey; a brother-in-law, Alfred Johnson; and a sister-in-law, Viola Johnson.

Doris is survived by three sons, Ronald (Nancy) Johnson of Clarksville, Larry (Sue) Johnson of Clarksville, and Wendell Johnson of Allison; seven grandchildren, Dawn (Scott) Capper, Chad (Staci) Johnson, Lisa (Eric) Trees, Justin (Lisl) Johnson, Joshua (Renae) Johnson, Megan Johnson (Colt Kielman), and Hailey Johnson; 14 great-grandchildren, Colton, Chase, Chelsea, Mason, Alana, Jade, Deric, Jeni, Jacob, Kiya, Lincoln, Breslynn, Cameron and Kyson; one brother, Donnie (Alda) Frey of Allison; four brothers-inlaw, Harry (Hannah) Johnson of Allison, Stauffer (Bendena) Johnson of Parkersburg, Fred (Christina) Johnson of Clarksville, and Vern Johnson of Hampton; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Johnson of Parkersburg, Frances Johnson of Shell Rock, and Adeline Johnson of Allison.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Trinity Reformed Church in Allison with Pastor Gary Mulder offi ciating. Keyboardist was Sandi Minders and she accompanied the congregation as they sang “Abide With Me” and “How Great Thou Art”. Deanne Ubben and Cassie Price provided special music as they sang “It Is Well With My Soul”. Burial was held at Allison Cemetery with Jeffrey Johnson, Tim Ubben, Mark Berends, David Johnson, Dean Johnson and James Johnson serving as Casketbearers.

Visitation was held one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville was in charge of arrangements.

ALMA SCALLY
December 14, 1921 - January 31, 2014

Alma Margaret (Balk) Scally, 92, of Allison, Iowa, passed away Friday, January 31, 2014 at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison in Allison.

She was born on December 14, 1921, in St. Lucas, Fayette County, Iowa, to Ulrich “Ole” and Mary (Hageman) Balk. At the age of three the family moved to Pittsville, Wisconsin, where they lived for twelve years before returning to Iowa. Alma attended school while living in Wisconsin.

She married Thomas “Bill” Scally on September 6, 1938, and they initially made their home in Waucoma, Iowa. Alma worked in the Poultry business, cooked at various restaurants and was a house keeper for a priest in Northeast Iowa for twenty-eight years.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. Alma enjoyed cooking, quilting, fl owers, playing the organ and teaching music. She had a love for ceramics and animals, especially birds.

Alma is survived by her son, Ron (Jan) Scally of Allison; grandchildren, Ron Scally Jr., Heather (Ty) Mathew of Cedar Falls, Mandy (Luke) Gabel of St Paul, Minnesota, and Tiffany (Dirk) Westerly of Des Moines; step-granddaughter, Jennifer (Tom) Rooney of Hampton; brothers, Donald of Dubuque, Floyd of Lime Springs, Francis of Osage, and Ronald (Jeanne) Balk of Cresco; sister, Patty (Oscar) Melver of Lime Springs; sisterin- law, Irene (Kringle) Balk of Dubuque, six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill on February 14, 1976; son, Robert “Bob” Scally on May 7, 2004; step-grandson, John; brothers, Julius, Walter, Arthur “Art”, Reuben, James “Jim”, and Robert “Bob” and sisters Leona (Balk) Wenthold and Rita (Balk) Rang.

There will be no services held. Burial will take place at a later date in the Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery – Wexford, in rural Lansing, Iowa. The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Allison is handling the arrangements.


DONALD  COATES
March 30, 1929 -  February 8, 2014

Donald Torval Coates, 84, of Parkersburg, died Feb. 8th at ManorCare Nursing Home in Waterloo Iowa. Died of cancer.

There will be no service as per Don’s request he was immediately cremated (Iowa Cremation), and will be buried with his wife Esther in Oak Hill Cemetery, New Hartford Iowa.

He is survived by, his sister Darlene (Verdell) Thomas of Arizona, his brother David Coates of Fort Dodge, three sons Craig (Dawn) Coates of New Hartford, Kenneth (Diane) Coates of New Hartford, Keith (Carla) Coates of Parkersburg, one daughter Connie Ayers of Holland, nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: his wife Esther Jean Coates, his mother Mabel, his father, Don, his stepfather Harley, and his great-grandson Ethan.

Donald was born March 30, 1929 in Waterloo, son of Mabel and Donald Coates. He served in the United States Navy: 1946-1947. He retired from Viking Pump after 39 years. There will be no formal gathering although any memorials can be sent to Cedar Valley Hospice.



MARVIN EVERTS
June 26, 1927 - February 7, 2014

Marvin George Everts, age 86, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of George and Jennie (Syhlman) Everts on July 26, 1927, on the Everts family farm near Buck Grove, rural Parkersburg, IA.

He received his education from a country school near his home and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1946.

On November 22, 1948, Marvin was united in marriage with Marcedes Jean Allan at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa. The couple made their home on the Everts family farm. Marvin farmed his entire life and also raised dairy cows, cattle and hogs.

The couple moved to Parkersburg in 1989. Marvin never offi cially retired as a farmer, but continued to help Bob where ever was needed. Marvin was an active and faithful member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, where he had served as church council president, was a youth group leader and played on the church dart ball league. Through the years he always enjoyed playing cards with friends and family. He especially loved his family and spending time with them all.

Marvin died Friday, February 7, 2014, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Grundy Center, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jeanne Brown; a greatgranddaughter, Nevaeh Everts; two brothers, William and Fred Everts; and a sister, Alice Church.

Marvin is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marcedes Everts of Parkersburg; two sons, Randall (Debbie) Everts of Corryton, TN, and Robert (Brenda) Everts of Parkersburg; two daughters, Lorri (David) Hodgden of Oxford, IA, and Linnea (Joe) Leto of Parkersburg; one son-in-law, David Brown of Leander, TX; 10 grandchildren, James & Matthew Everts, Nathanial (Noelle) Everts, Nicholas (Nikki) Everts, Ben Hodgden, Joey & Shelby Leto, Elizabeth (Robert) Hicks, Monica (Daniel) Harper, and Sean Brown; eight great-grandchildren, Carter, Colton, Camryn, Adam, Becca, Sam, Makenzie, and Natalie; one sister, Esther (Rev. Charles) Stickley of Hurley, NY.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, with Rev. Dr. David Hagstrom offi - ciating. Organist was Janet Mennen and she accompanied the congregation as they sang “Just As I Am” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”. Special music was provided by Matthew Everts. Burial was held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg with Nicholas Everts, Nathanial Everts, Matthew Everts, Kyle Poppens, Ben Hodgden, Glenn Everts and Jim Everts serving as Casketbearers. Memorials may be directed to the family.

GENE MILLER

Gene LeRoy Miller, 82, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away Monday, February 10, 2014, at his home in Dumont with his wife and loved ones by his side. He was born on July 19, 1931, in rural Butler County, Iowa, to Ebel and Onita (DeArmoun) Miller.

Gene graduated from Dumont Community Schools in 1949. He drove school bus and worked for Lloyd White Trucking until he served two years in United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was united in marriage to Dora Mae Homer in 1953, they had two children Troy and Lisa. Their marriage later ended in divorce.

Gene rejoined farming with his dad and brother, Arnold Miller, upon returning from Korea, and continued farming his entire life.

On March 4, 1984, Gene married Patricia Hudson and they moved to the family home in Dumont in 1987, where he continued farming with his nephews Mike Day and Mike Myers. In addition to farming, Gene also worked part-time farming with Art Wagner and Robert Heilskov and drove truck for Stock Trucking from 1999 to 2010. Besides his lifelong love for farming, Gene also enjoyed wood crafting, riding around on his lawn mower and spending time helping his neighbors. Many friends and family members continue to enjoy the beautiful wood pieces he lovingly created. He was a member of the New Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church -Dumont Center, the Vulcan Lodge in Bristow and the Dumont American Legion.

Gene is survived by his loving wife Patricia Miller of Dumont, son Troy Miller of Mesa, Arizona, daughter Lisa (Michael) Lasch of Austin, Texas, step-son Lonnie Steenhard of Cresco, step-son Martin Steenhard of Cresco, step-son Danny Steenhard of New Hampton, step-daughter Lori Kummer of Charles City, grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ebel and Onita, brother Arnold Miller and sister Geraldine Day. Funeral services were held at Saturday, February 15, 2014, at the New Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church - Dumont Center, with Pastor Ann Donat officiating.

Burial took place in the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont was in charge of arrangements.
