Lela Doreatha Uhlenhopp, age 96, of Aplington, Iowa, died Monday, November 23, 2009, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington of natural causes.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, November 28, 2009, at the Christian Reformed Church, Parkersburg, Iowa with Pastor Russell Boersma officiating.

Vernon Emil Albert Steere


Funeral services for Vernon Steere were held Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Ethel “Babe” Irene Oldenburger


Ethel “Babe” Irene Oldenburger, age 91, of Parkersburg, Iowa, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2009, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes.

David Matthew Vettel

David Matthew Vettel, 20, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away December 1, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 5, at the Faith Baptist Church in Hampton, Iowa, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.

Lyle C. Wedeking

Lyle C. Wedeking, 83, of Waukon, IA, died Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Memorial services were held Saturday, December 5, at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial of the ashes will be at a later date in Clarksville, IA.

Lyle Carl Edward Wedeking was born on August 21, 1926 in rural Clarksville, IA, the son of Emil Carl and Louise Hattie (Wilken) Wedeking. He was baptized and confirmed at the Pleasant Valley United Church of Christ in rural Clarksville and attended the Clarksville Schools.

Lyle farmed with his parents east of Clarksville following his schooling. On October 8, 1946 he married Dorothy Mae Hurd at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They farmed in Butler and Chickasaw Counties until 1964 when he moved to Waukon where he owned and operated the Surge Dairy Equipment dealership for many years. After retiring from the Surge business, he was a salesman for Pladsen Motors, worked at Cunningham Hardware, and drove truck for RC Tires, all in Waukon.

Lyle was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. He enjoyed fishing with his brother, children, and grandchildren and pheasant hunting in the Clarksville and Nashua areas. He and Dorothy were loyal followers of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. Lyle enjoyed bowling and sponsored a team in the local leagues for many years. His favorite times were those he spent with his family.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Waukon; a daughter, Karen (Jim) Norton of Decorah and their children, Terry (Tiffany) and Travis (Heather) Norton and Tanya (Kevin) Donlan; a son, Stan (Judy) Wedeking of Minnesota City, MN and their children, Chuck, Brenda (Steve), and Steve (Kariann) Wedeking; 5 great-grandchildren, Bailey, Brandon, Taylor, Garrett, and Robert; and a brother, Gene (Delores) Wedeking of Nashua. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Lyle’s grandchildren served as honorary pallbearers.

Roy Fred Wiebke

Roy Fred Wiebke, 79, of Allison, Iowa, passed away December 5, 2009, at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 8, at the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Greene. Private burial took place at the St John’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery following the service with Rev. Mark Walker officiating the service.

He was born August 10, 1930, in Fayette County, Iowa, to Frederick and Dorthea (Heuer) Wiebke. Roy attended Brushy Mound school in Butler County and attended school in Allison. He married Lavon Arjes on January 29, 1950, in Allison, Iowa, and later married Bernita St. John on July 25, 2008 in Allison, Iowa. Roy was a farmer and a Dekalb Seed Corn Dealer, He was a Butler County Appraiser, Roy was a member of the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and was on the Church Board, he was a Board member and an Agent for the Bremer County Mutual Insurance Association and was a 4-H leader for the West Point Township Jr. Farmers.

Roy is survived by his wife Bernita Wiebke of Allison, son Randall (Renee) Wiebke of Ft. Collins, Colorado, daughter Cynthia (Marvin) Schmadeke of Clarksville, three grandchildren Wendy (Dennis) Ralph of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Erik (Megan) Schmadeke of Babbitt, Minnesota, Clint (Terri) Schmadeke of Plainfield, Iowa and great grandchildren Blake & Ryan Ralph and Jordan & Alannah Schmadeke. He was preceded in death by his parents & his first wife Lavon of 50 years. Sietsema Vogel Funeral Homes in Allison was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Beverly V. Moffitt

Beverly V. Moffitt, 81, of Shell Rock died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo of complications of COPD.

Services were held Monday, December 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock. Her body will be cremated with burial on Tuesday, December 8 at 10:00 a.m. in Shell Rock Riverside Cemetery.

Beverly was born April 9, 1928, in Shell Rock, daughter of Kenneth L. and Martha Blanche Austen Hall. On Oct. 20, 1946, she married Travis C. Moffitt at the Shell Rock Methodist Church. He died in 1985. She graduated from Shell Rock Senior High School in 1945. She worked as a bookkeeper, including many years at Epley Bros. Hybrids in Shell Rock. She retired in 1995. She was a life-long member of Shell Rock United Methodist Church, as well as a member of the Shell Rock Riverside Cemetery Board, Shell Rock Library Board, Amvets Auxiliary, Legion Auxiliary, Shell Rock Development Corporation, Shell Rock Trust Board, Shell Rock Business and Professional Women, Shell Rock Care Center Auxiliary and the Care Center Board Secretary. She also volunteered for Cedar Valley Hospice from 1997 until her death.

Beverly is survived by her two daughters, Linda (Ed Deuhr) Bingham of Stout, and Sue (Dan) Hruza of Aitkin, MN; two sons, K.C. (Roxy) Moffitt and Tom (Lisa) Moffitt, both of Shell Rock; six grandchildren, Libby (John Zelle) Bingham, Laney (Bruce) Toenjes, Chris (Barb) Hruza, Jeremiah Moffitt, Lynsey Moffitt, Sean Moffitt; five great-grandchildren, John Toenjes, Rachel Toenjes, Emily Bingham, Paul Zelle, and Dante Moffitt; one sister, Ruthella (Jim) Whiteside of Shell Rock.

She was Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her special friend Gerald Harken. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the family.
W. Eileen DeBower

W. Eileen DeBower, 85, of Waverly, Iowa, passed away December 6, 2009, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa.

Funeral services for W. Eileen DeBower, 85, of Waverly, Iowa, were held on Tuesday, December 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa with Rev. Jeffrey A. Blank officiating the service. Burial took place in the Allison Cemetery in Allison, Iowa.

Eileen was born June 1, 1924, in Bristow, Iowa, to William and Louise (Wiegman) Bochman. Eileen graduated from the Bristow High school and attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. She married Ernest DeBower on November 23, 1944, Allison, Iowa. Eileen worked at Lutheran Mutual and the Butler County Treasurers Office. She was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. Eileen enjoyed spending time with her family and golfing with her husband Ernie.

She is survived by husband Ernest DeBower Waverly, daughter Colette & husband Vernon Harms of Cedar Falls, son Craig & wife Bea DeBower of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, grandson Tim Harms of Owatonna, Minnesota, granddaughter Amy Mosley of Waverly, granddaughter Christina Billings of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, grandson Daniel DeBower of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, great grandchildren A. J. Mosley, Zach Mosley, Christian Mosley, Carter Billings, Caitlin Billings & Jack DeBower.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters Erma Oltmann & Edna Lagnholz. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Homes in Allison was in charge of the funeral arrangements. 
Laura Jean Wubbena


Laura Jean Wubbena, 74, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away December 10, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

She was born May 24, 1935, in rural Allison, Iowa, to Fred and Minnie (Wix) Endelman. Laura attended the Butler Center Country School. She married Duane Kenneth Wubbena on August 31, 1954, in the Lutheran Parsonage in Allison, Iowa. Laura was a member of the Dumont Reformed church in Dumont, Iowa.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Allison Lutheran Church. Laura was a homemaker and a volunteer ambulance driver for the Dumont Ambulance for many years. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren and attending their events, Laura also enjoyed sewing, golfing and bowling.

She is survived by her husband Duane Wubbena of Dumont, daughter Mary VanEllen of Dumont, daughter Marcia (Clark) Speedy of Allison, daughter Billie Jo (Mark) Culver of Ackley, sisters Norma (Darwin) Wubbena of Allison, Ruth (Pat) Feltus of Allison and her brother Fredrick (Robi) Endelman of Allison, grandchildren Steven (Angie) VanEllen, Stephanie VanEllen, Amy VanEllen (Juan Montalvo), Keshia VanEllen (Kirk Servantez), Brianna Speedy, Marisa Speedy, Cale Culver, Marley Culver, Claire Culver, great-grandchildren Brett Marshall, Chloe VanEllen, Kaden Servantez, and many nieces and nephews.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents Fred & Minnie, granddaughter Stephanie VanEllen and her son-in-law Tom VanEllen.

Funeral services were held Monday December 14, 2009, at the Dumont Reformed Church with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. Pastor Jeff Fiet officiated the service. Organist was Jim Siebrands. Pallbearers were John Endelman, Joey Endelman, Dan Feltus, Tom Wubbena, David Wubbena and Bill Prange. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont was in charge of arrangements.


Ernest “Gordon” Nielsen


Ernest “Gordon” Nielsen, 87, of Waverly, Iowa and formerly of Dumont, Aplington and Hampton, Iowa, died on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa.

Gordon was born on August 4, 1922, in Ackley, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Anna (Hansen) Nielsen. Ernest was baptized on January 22, 1925 at Robertson, Iowa. He was a confirmed member of the Lutheran Church in Hampton, Iowa. Most of his life was spent in the Geneva vicinity, where he was educated. Upon graduation from high school he attended the Sheet Metal American Air Force Technical School in Des Moines, Iowa. After graduation he was employed by the Air Research Defense Manufacturing Co. in Los Angeles, California.

He later entered military service with Aviation Engineers serving battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, and Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. His decorations and citations include three overseas service bars, European, African, and Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbons, one silver battle star, good conduct medal and World War II victory medal. He was discharged in December 1945, and returned to Dumont, Iowa, where he was associated with his father in the creamery.

On May 4, 1946, Gordon was united in marriage to Marlis J. Ritzman at the Evangelical United Methodist Church at Dumont. Gordon and Marlis remained in Dumont for 25 years where Gordon was a corn sheller operator. In 1963, he started farming south of Dumont. He farmed for 21 years and retired in the fall of 1984, because of health problems. In 1974, Gordon and Marlis moved to Aplington, Iowa, where they would live for 20 years. They were associated with the First Reformed Church. In 1994, the couple moved to Hampton, Iowa and became members of First Congregational Church. A few years later they moved to their present home at the Ledges in Waverly. Gordon’s strong faith sustained him through many years of serious health issues and his positive attitude was an inspiration to all that were blessed to have known him.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Marlis of Waverly, Iowa; a sister, Margaret (Delmar) Hearn of Hampton, Iowa; a brother, Warren (Betty) Nielsen of Dumont, Iowa: two sisters-in-law, Naomi Ritzman, of Hampton, Iowa; and Audrey Stemmerman, of Allison, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. Marlis and Gordon were never blessed with children, but they have two Godchildren, Rita (Trent) Gerdes of Waterloo, Iowa and David (Dana) Nolte of Olathe, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charles Lyngaard and a sister, Kay Mangan.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Heritage United Methodist Church, Waverly with Pastor Moody Colorado officiating. Burial was in the Dumont Cemetery, Dumont. Betty “Lucy” Miller

Lucy Miller, born Betty Lucille, age 79, of Aplington, Iowa, died Thursday, December 10, 2009, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, from pneumonia after surviving numerous cancers.

Ruth L. Whitaker

Ruth L. Whitaker, 87, of Allison, Iowa, passed away December 17, 2009, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison in Allison, Iowa. She was born on August 8, 1922, in Finchford, Iowa, to William and Sarah (Berger) Polderboer. Ruth graduated from New Hartford High School. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Whitaker in 1941.

Ruth was a secretary for R.E.C. in Allison. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Allison and was a past matron of the Eastern Star. Ruth was very involved in politics.

She is survived by her sons Bruce (Janet) Whitaker of Seattle, Washington, Joel (Janice) Whitaker of Seattle, Washington and Steven (Linda) Whitaker of Altoona, seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband Kenneth, sister Wilma Brenne, brother Emmett Polder and daughter Annette Whitaker.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Allison United Church of Christ with burial in the Allison Cemetery in Allison. Pastor Ralph Wedeking and Rev. Joel Whitaker officiated the service.

Rose Alice Ebling


A Funeral Mass for Rose Alice Ebling, 78, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m., December 31, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Greene, with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, December 30, with a Scriptural Wake and Rosary Service conducted by The Daughters of the Americas at 7:00 p.m. and will continue at the church one hour prior to services on Thursday. Rose died Monday, December 28, 2009, at the Liebe Care Center, Greene.

William “Bill” H. Everts

William “Bill” H. Everts, age 88, died Saturday, December 19, 2009, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center, from natural causes.

Funeral Services were held Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland with Rev. Rick Vollema officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg with full military honors conducted by the Parkersburg American Legion, Post # 285.

Lena Meester

Lena Jeanette Meester, age 91, died on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2009, at the Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, from natural causes.

Chester “Buster” Forry


Chester Emmert "Buster" Forry, age 93, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born at home on a farm south west of Clarksville on November 28, 1916, to Frank and Charlotte (Doty) Forry with twin brother, Lester "Bob" Emmerson, the youngest of seven brothers and sisters. He received his education at Jackson #1 Country School near his home.

He married Glendora Smith on April 9, 1939, at the Forry Farm, rural Clarksville. A double wedding was held with brother Bob and Gracie. Buster and Glendora had two daughters and three sons: Judy Drenth, Dixie Thurm, Bill, Dan and Jim. They were divorced in 1970.

He then married Harriet (VanDeest) Bohlen on November 2, 1975, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. They established their home southeast of Clarksville at the Butler County Conservation Headquarters. They were members at Immanuel since 1967. In June of 2008 they moved to town after their home was flooded.

Buster enjoyed hunting (deer until December of 2008), farming, trapping and fishing, but most of all he enjoyed working for Heery Woods State Park for 32 years. He made many of the trails and first campgrounds in Heery Woods. He received a plaque for his many years of service and support to the Parks Program given in 2006 by the Butler County Conservation Board. Buster was awarded "Wildlife Conservation Lifetime Achievement Award" on March 12, 2005, by Butler County Chapter #64 Pheasants Forever. In 1988 he began serving as a Butler County Reserve Deputy for several years. He was a cancer survivor since 1955, had participated in Relay for Life every year and was one of the oldest cancer survivors in Butler County.

Buster passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2009, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Scott Thurm; his parents; four sisters, Mary (in infancy) and Martha Ciavarelli Purcell, Wava Voss and Lela Biekert Chandler, two brothers, Nathan and Bob; and two sons-in-law, Lawrence Drenth and Gerald Thurm.

Buster is survived by his wife, Harriet, Clarksville; two daughters, Judy Drenth, Decorah, IA, and Dixie Thurm, Denver, IA; three sons, Bill (Becky) Forry, Castle Rock, CO, Dan (Bonnie) Forry, Clarksville, Jim (Jenny) Forry, Grundy Center, IA; and step-children, Randall (Trish) Bohlen, Parkersburg, IA, Sharon (Jim) Leerhoff, Clarksville, and Scott (Jackie) Bohlen, Durant, IA; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Lynne Busch officiating. Organist was Sharon Leerhoff. Vocalist Travis Bouska sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus". Congregational Hymns were "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Casketbearers were Clint Forry, Mark Thurm, Jessi Urban, Alicia Forry, Dawn Wells and Stacy Thurm. Honorary Casketbearers were Deb Drenth, Sandra Drenth, Julie Forry, Amy Klimke, Amanda Bethke and Andrea Routt. Flower Committee was Julie Forry and Bonnie Forry.

Harold Cook

Harold Cook, 86 of Allison, Iowa, and formerly of Waverly and Clarksville, died Friday evening, December 18, 2009, at the Allison Health Care Center, Allison, Iowa, from complications of congestive heart failure.

Harold was born on March 28, 1923, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Harold and Hazel (Everitt) Cook. Harold attended school near Janesville. On September 12, 1943, Harold was united in marriage to Gladys Mosher in Waverly Junction, Iowa. Harold and his wife, Gladys were life-long residents in Clarksville, Waverly, and Allison. His career of over 35 years was at the Carnation/Nestles Corporation in Waverly. On October 30, 2003, Gladys died and Harold continued to live in his home in Allison until August 5, 2009, when he became a resident of the Allison Health Care Center.

Harold is survived by one sister, Lorraine (Ray) Jakel of Nashua, Iowa; one brother, Richard (Fran) Cook of Brooklyn, Iowa; one granddaughter, Tammy (Chad) Miller of Allison; one grandson, Jeffrey Heine of Dallas, Texas; two great grandchildren; Brianna Grantham of Allison; Jeremy Grantham of Clarksville; and a great great granddaughter, Peighton Grantham of Clarksville. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Kathy Heine; his wife, Gladys; a sister, Irene and a brother, Clyde.

June L. Ballhagen

June L. Ballhagen, 64, of New Hartford, Iowa passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2009 at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, Iowa.

June was born on February 28, 1945, the daughter of Lloyd and Marie (Wildebuer) Bush in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1963 and attended Pitze’s Beauty School for a year. On June 21, 1964, she was united in marriage to Jerry Ballhagen at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa. June was employed at Carol’s Beauty Salon in Cedar Falls, the New Hartford Post Office and at Rabo Agri Finance (formerly Ag Services) until her retirement on December 15, 2009. She enjoyed playing cards with her card club group and going to all kinds of car races. Her most enjoyment was spending it with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors are her husband, Jerry Ballhagen of New Hartford, Iowa; two sons, Rod (Carol) Ballhagen of Allison, Iowa and Brent (Janelle) Ballhagen of Parkersburg, Iowa; daughter, Mindy (Bron) Umthum of Waverly, Iowa; her mother, Marie Bush of Cedar Falls, Iowa; seven, grandchildren, Austin, Emory, Olivia, Michael and Jerod Ballhagen, Jayden and Kamryn Umthum and by a brother-in-law, James Aikey of Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her father, Lloyd Bush in February of 1989 and by her sister, Anne Aikey in July of 2009.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa with Pastor Philip Houghen officiating. Burial followed in the Oak Hill Cemetery in New Hartford, Iowa.

Emma Grace (Pete) Rindels


Emma Grace (Pete) Rindels, 82, of Bristow, Iowa, passed away December 27, 2009, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison in Allison, Iowa. She was born November 19, 1927, in Bristow, Iowa, to Fred F. and Kate (Hartema) Schriever. Pete graduated from Bristow Public Schools. She was united in marriage to Alvin James (Lefty) Rindels on August 28, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Pete attended services at the New Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church in Dumont, Iowa.

She worked at the grocery store in Bristow and other local jobs throughout her life. Pete loved fishing, collecting Snow White memorabilia and spending time with her family. She also greatly enjoyed having coffee every morning at her home with the ladies.

Pete is survived by her son Keith and wife Doris Rindels of Montezuma, son Alan Rindels and fiancé Joyce Cummings of Waterloo & daughter Kaye Rindels and friend Charlie Davis of Waterloo; grandchildren Rob Rindels and wife Erin of Iowa City, Melissa and husband Curt Roach of Norwalk, Dave Ross of Pontiac, Illinois, Rick Ross and wife Becky of Pontiac, Illinois, Mike Howe of Waterloo, Stacy Barber of Waterloo and Melissa Hall and husband Bill of Waterloo; great-grandchildren Austin & Tyler Rindels of Iowa City, Bailey, Garret & Madison Roach of Norwalk, Heather, Tyler and Kathryn Ross of Pontiac, Illinois, Ricky Jr. & Robby Ross of Pontiac, Illinois, Alissa & Noah Youngberg of Waterloo and Riley Hall of Waterloo; sister Ida Mulert of Dubuque, sister Deona Van Every of San Diego, California, step-brother John Harms of Bristow, step-sister Lil Itzen of Holland, step-sister Violet Simone of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and numerous other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alvin James Rindels, two brothers Marvin and Harold Schriever, one infant brother Frederick Schriever, sister Jennie Menken, step sister Esther Lumley and daughter-in-law Kathy Rindels.

Funeral services were held Wednesday December 30, 2009, at the New Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church in Dumont, Iowa. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, rural Bristow, Iowa with Pastor Larry Pauley officiating.

Leona Alvina Miller

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, December 28, 2009, at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont. Visitation was held Sunday, December 27, from 2 to 5 P.M. at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont. Burial took place in the Oak Hill Cemetery in rural Bristow. Pastor Jeff Fiet officiated the service.

Leona Alvina Miller, 89, of Manchester, Iowa, formerly of Dumont, Iowa, passed away December 22, 2009, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. She was born on November 4, 1920, in Grundy County, Iowa, to Mann and Lena (Buss) Mennen. Leona graduated from Aplington High School and the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. She was united in marriage to Dale R. Miller on April 3, 1942, at the Bethel Reformed Church Parsonage in Aplington.

Leona was a teacher at a country school for five years. She carried her love for teaching throughout her life, all while being a homemaker and a farm wife. Leona was a member of the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont. Leona taught Sunday School and Bible school for over fifty years and she was a Ladies Guild member for more than sixty years. She also enjoyed gardening.

Leona is survived by her son Wendale L. (Diane) Miller of Dumont, son Gary A. (Sheila) Miller of Dumont, son Dalen D. (Deb) Miller of Dumont, daughter Leann K. Miller and husband Vic Boeding of Monticello, foster son Lonnie (Angie) Wygle of Vinton, sixteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dale, brothers Eddie and Melvin Mennen, sisters Lorraine Schneiderman and Frances Winkowitsch and great grandson Aiden Dale.


Mabel A. Litterer

Funeral services for Mabel A. Litterer, 92, of Greene were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 29, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene with Pastor John Hanna officiating.

Mabel A. Johnson was born December 23, 1916, in Greene, Butler Co., Iowa a daughter of Edward and Kate (Stinger) Johnson and died Monday, December 21, 2009, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.
