Sheri K. Lake

Sheri K. Lake (formerly Hutchison) 50, Fellow of the American Society of Interior Designers (FASID) and owner of METROSPACE, an award winning interior design firm located in Falls Church, Virginia, died of ovarian cancer July 1 at Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia. She was born in Hampton and raised in Dumont. Ms. Lake was a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) since 1986. She was very involved in the design community, serving on the local and national boards, including President of the Washington Metropolitan Chapter in 1994-95. Recently Ms. Lake was named a Fellow of ASID, the highest national honor, for her outstanding work within the Society. Ms. Lake also participated in numerous design-related community activities serving in various capacities with groups such as the Washington Architectural Foundation, Northern Virginia Community College, Marymount University, Mt. Vernon University Graduate School of Design, and the International Furnishings and Design Association. She will be remembered in the hearts and minds of all who visit the ASID National Headquarters building in Washington, D.C. for her dedicated leadership of the building’s renovation in 1998. The four-year project involved extensive pro bono contributions of effort and talent from Ms. Lake and her employees at METROSPACE, Inc. The project was recognized in articles in Association Management, Forbes and ASID Professional Designer magazines. Michael Alin, Executive Director of ASID, speaking of Ms. Lake’s selfless and outstanding leadership said, “ASID’s headquarters will be a long-standing tribute to her talent, creativity and style.” Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Gary, of Arlington, Virginia, her parents Gordon and Beverly Hutchison of Tucson, Arizona, and three brothers, Dean of Storm Lake, Lee of Mesa, Arizona and Mark of Dumont.


Milo A. Wooldridge

Milo A. Wooldridge, Sr., 82, of Ocean Pines, died peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Atlantic General Hospital after a sudden illness. He was born in Clarksville, on November 12, 1917, a son of the late George W. and Florence Hickle Wooldridge. He was a WWII Navy veteran, serving over 20 years as Chief Petty Officer. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and belonged to the VFW, Loyal Order of the Moose, Catholic War Veterans, and the American Legion. He traveled widely and had visited many places here and abroad. His nickname was “Mike”, and he and Frances made friends everywhere they stayed and traveled. He stood ready to assist others in their projects and shared travel and adventure stories with others. Surviving family members include his wife, Frances L. Wooldridge; his children: Donald Wooldridge of Dunkirk, Maryland, Milo Wooldridge, Jr., of Juneau, Alaska; Rosemary Staudt of Dale City, Virginia, Kathy Farrell of Stafford County, Virginia; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Mass was held on Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at 12 Noon at St. John Neumann Church on Beauchamp Road. His burial took place on Monday, July 17 with full Military Rites by the Clarksville Amvets Post #30 at Lowell Cemetery, rural Clarksville, at 12 Noon, the family cemetery in which all his forebears have been interred since te Civil War. Contributions in his memory may be made to Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21803. Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville was in charge of arrangements.


Vernon Leroy Pines

Vernon Leroy Pines, 91, of Shell Rock, died on Friday, July 14, 2000, at the Clarksville Community Nursing Home of natural causes. Vernon was born on April 22, 1909, in rural Butler County, the son of William and Eda (Ehling) Pines. He was baptized on April 4, 1915, in Waterloo, and later confirmed on December 12, 1952, by Pastor Matthias at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Clarksville. He graduated from New Hartford High School and then attended Gates Business College in Waterloo. After his schooling, Vernon worked at John Deere in Waterloo until 1933. On February 20, 1934, he was united in marriage to Edith Kocher in Waterloo. He then farmed in Waterloo and New Hartford, prior to moving to a farm in Coster, where he and Edith have resided for 60 years. On July 5, 2000, when Vernon’s health was failing, he moved to the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville. Vernon enjoyed sports, especially basketball, rock hunting with Edith, but his great passion was his family. Vernon is survived by his wife, Edith, of Shell Rock; four children and their spouses, William and Veda Pines of Janesville, Elizabeth and Luverne Becker of New Hartford, Alice and Larry Schwab of Allison, and Paul and Linda Pines of Waverly; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; three step grandchildren, and five step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Matilda Pines; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and one step great-grandchild. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg with Pastor David Palm officiating. Burial was in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville with Pastor P.C. Matthias assisting. Memorials may be directed to the church. Kaiser-Corson Funeral home in Shell Rock was in charge of arrangements.


Claus C. Hinders

Claus C. Hinders of Waverly died on Sunday, July 16, 2000 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital from natural causes. He was bornton January 5, 1916, the son of Kneal and Minnie (Reiners) Hinders. He served in the Army from 1941 to 1943. He married Marcelite Zweibohmer on March 25, 1944 in Cedar Falls. Claus was a foreman for Kehe Construction for 29 years, after retirement he worked for the Bremer County Conservation. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, playing card games like solitaire, pinochle, checkers, and cribbage. He enjoyed his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Marcelite; two sons Jim and his wife Kathy of Plainfield, and Tom and his wife Mary Ann of Waverly; two daughters Jane Van Raden and her husband Max of Plainfield, and Barbara Parkers and her husband David of Newell, Iowa; two sisters, Anna Arnold of Superior, Wisconsin, and Minne Gilley and her husband Jesse of Fletcher, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Reiner and Kneal Hinders, three sisters Louise Haberling, Florence Poppen and Grace Bishop; an infant sister and infant twin siblings; and infant granddaughter Dawn Hinders and a great granddaughter. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 19, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly with the Rev. Larry Sipe officiating. Burial was in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the family. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly was in charge of arrangements.
