CARROLL BURRAS
September 12, 1928 - August 27, 2013

Carroll Burras, 84, of Kanawha passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013 in Kanawha.

Funeral services for Carroll Burras were held on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kanawha Lutheran Church, 124 West Fourth Street in Kanawha with Pastors Geoffrey and Char White officiating. Interment was at Norway Township Cemetery in Kanawha. Ewing Funeral Home, Kanawha, was in charge of the arrangements.

Carroll Robert Burras was born September 12, 1928 to Carl and Berthilda (Anderson) Burras on the family farm south of Kanawha. Carroll attended country school and Eagle Grove High School.

After finishing school, Carroll spent a few years doing long distance hauling and working on county road maintenance crews. He soon returned to his farming roots partnering with his brothers Ray and Roger. Together, they farmed for over 46 years.

Carroll was united in marriage to Edith (Johnson) Amosson on June 28, 1972 at St. John’s Lutheran Church south of Kanawha. He was a very loving husband and father to Edith’s children, who thought of him as their father.

Carroll served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was an avid member of the Kanawha American Legion Post for many years.

Carroll was a very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, serving as financial officer until the church was closed, and has been a member of Kanawha Lutheran Church ever since.

Carroll loved spending time with his family and is described as the life of the party. He also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and grew to eventually enjoy the game of golf. One of his passions was restoring and riding antique tractors.

Carroll is survived by his wife Edith Burras of Kanawha; their children Jim (Susan) Amosson of Waverly, Bette (Sandy) Schenck of Algona, Tom (Jeanne) Amosson of Cedar Rapids, and Carol (Lynn) Landin of Marion; grandchildren Kim Amosson, Kelly Amosson, Christine (Salloum) AbouSaleh, Michelle Amosson, Briana Amosson, Nick Amosson, Sarah (Mike) Baker, and Brian Landin, as well as his great-granddaughter Isabelle AbouSaleh; sisters Verna Headrick, Cora Spangler, Opal Neese; brothers Raymond Burras and Roger (Dorothy) Burras and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

CCarroll is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Arlene Burres, and brothers Irving Burras and Stan Burras. The family suggests memorials be directed to Kanawha Lutheran Church.

DOROTHY JOAN ERIKSEN
August 7, 1931 - August 22, 2013

Dorothy Joan Eriksen, age 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday August 22, 2013 at home with her family by her side.

Memorial services for Dorothy J. ugust 24, 2013 at the Presbyterian Church in Dows. Pastor Shawn Hill officiated. Burial followed in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows. Dugger Funeral Home, Dows, was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Joan, the daughter of Albert and Emma Lottman Fink, was born on August 7, 1931 in Ellsworth. She grew up on a farm in Dows. Dorothy attended school in Dows and graduated from the Dows High School in 1949.

Dorothy married the love of her life, Herbert Eriksen on March 31, 1950 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home in Dows, where Dorothy worked as a Homemaker and raised the couple’s five children. From 1977 – 1979, she worked at the Dows Community School as a cook, custodian and teacher’s aide. In 1979, Dorothy started working for Fridgedaire in Webster City. She retired in 1997, and enjoyed very much the time she was able to spend with friends and family.

Dorothy was a member of the Dows Presbyterian Church and American Legion Auxiliary in Dows. She volunteered in many organizations. Dorothy was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. She loved to cook for her family and work in the garden. Dorothy always put others before herself. She would light up a room with her smile. Her strong faith, positive attitude and love for her family helped her fight cancer diagnosed many years ago.

Dorothy is survived by her sister, Delores Crawford of Iowa Falls, her five children, Nancy Bakker of Dows, Kerry Eriksen of Dows, David Eriksen of Rowan, Paul Eriksen of Dows, Shari Osier and husband, Dave of Bondurant, six grandchildren, Nathan, Kara, Faith, Angie, Ashlee, Kendall, six greatgrandchildren, Jaeden, Mason, Blake, Kady, Kaila, Mackenzie and many other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Herb in 1995, and five siblings, Amelia, Richard, Bud, Harold, Robert, Evelyn and a brother-in-law, Donald Bakker.

JESSIE RUTH SHUPE
December 4, 1920  - August 25, 2013


Jessie Ruth Shupe, age 92, died August 25, 2013, at the West View Care Center in Britt.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 7, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at the Clarion United Church of Christ. Reverend Warren Curry will be officiating the service. A graveside service for Jessie will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion prior to the service at 12:45 p.m. Those wishing to express their sympathies in memorials may direct them to the family, Kim Ahrends, PO Box 203, Clarion IA 50525.

Jessie Ruth Littlefield was born December 4, 1920, in Clarion, Iowa, to Mary Alberta (Lester) and Leo Charles Littlefield. Jessie graduated high school and continued her education at the Cedar Falls Teaching College where she received her teaching certificate.

She then moved back to Clarion where Jessie taught country school. In 1942, Jessie married Orren Ahrends and this marriage was blessed with three children Kirk, Kim and Mark. Orren and Jessie raised their young children on the family farm southeast of Clarion. The family then moved to town in 1961. In 1977 Jessie then married Elrid Shupe at the Clarion United Church of Christ. Jessie worked for five years at the Clarion Clinic until 1969 where she began work the Wright County Engineer’s Office where she was a secretary until she retired in 1999.

Jessie was a proud member of the P.E.O. where she held numerous offices and a devoted Christian. She enjoyed church as she sang for the Clarion United Church of Christ. She always enjoyed hosting her Wednesday night church bible study at her home where she was known to have delectable snacks on an immaculate table setting which changed on a regular basis. Jessie always enjoyed hosting celebrations whether it was a friendly gathering or a family holiday. Each of those social functions would include delicious home cooked meals made in her own kitchen. She appreciated her family, encompassed her friends as her own family and had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren.

Those left to cherish Jessie’s life are her children: Kim (Judy) Ahrends of Clarion, Kirk (Lori Lynn) Ahrends of Cherokee, step-son Dean Shupe of Florence, Kentucky; grandchildren: Jessica Christopher and her children Ben and Christina, Christopher Ahrends; sibling: Leona “Teddy” Hill. Along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Jessie is preceded in death by her parents Leo and Mary, husband Eldred, step-son Larry Shupe, infant son Mark Ahrends, brother Philip Littlefield. Andrews Funeral Home, Belmond, was in charge of the arrangements.


LORIN D. FJETLAND
October 28, 1928 - September 5, 2013

Lorin D. Fjetland, age 87, of Apache Junction, Arizona and Belmond passed away Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the Greenfield House Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mesa, Arizona.

Funeral services for Lorin D. Fjetland were held Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Belmond. Pastor Cindy Morrison offi ciated. Burial took place in the Belmond Cemetery. Graveside military rites were provided by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Dugger Funeral Home, Belmond, was in charge of the arrangements.

Lorin Darwin the son of Dan and Sadie VanBuskirk Fjetland was born October 28, 1928 near Rowan. Lorin grew up in the Rowan and Goodell area where he attended school. Lorin graduated from the Goodell High School. After high school, Lorin entered the U.S. Navy. After returning from U.S. Navy Basic Training, Lorin was united in marriage to Avis Ellingston at St Olaf Lutheran Church. The couple was blessed with two sons, Ronald and Dennis.

Lorin was united in marriage to Marcella H. TerBeek Smith. The couple made their home in Britt and Belmond area. Lorin owned and operated the Fjetland Pest Control Business for forty years. He eventually either turned over or started second and third generations of his family in that business. Lorin and Marcella retired to Apache Junction, Arizona in 2010. Lorin enjoyed golf, hunting, boating, and playing “Mexican Train” Dominos.

Lorin is survived by his wife, Marcella, sons, Ronnie and wife, Candi of Lake Cornelia, Dennis and wife, Mary of Clarion; step children, Sandy Lester and husband, Kent, Dan Smith and wife, Paula; grandchildren, Danny, Mark, Valerie, Buffy; step grandchildren, Kevin, Eric, Ashly, Carly; siblings, Eldon Fjetland of Riceville, Iowa, Donna Johnson of Meservey, Iowa, Larry Fjetland and wife, Ruby, of Edgewood, AR, Vivian Pals and husband, Delbert of Belmond, Judy Piel and friend, Robert Modderman of Alxcander, Betty and Scott Dungey of Osage; numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lila; brothers, Dale, Darold, Donald, and Danny.

JANET (HANSON) LICH
November 14, 1960 - September 4, 2013

Janet (Hanson) Lich, 52, entered her Heavenly home on September 4, 2013. She passed away in Belmond from her short battle with cancer with her family and friends singing and praying her to the pearly gates.

Funeral services for Janet M. Lich were held at Monday, September 9, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Belmond. Pastor Patrick Kennedy of the Evangelical Free Church in Belmond offi ciated. Burial will take place at a later date in the Amsterdam Cemetery east of Goodell.

Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond was in charge of the arrangements.

Janet Marie (Hanson) Lich was born November 14, 1960, in Belmond to Merlin and Florence (Bates) Hanson. She lived in the Goodell area for her formative years with her older brother, Duane. She attended school in Goodell and graduated from Belmond High School in 1979.

After graduation, Janet worked many different types of jobs in and around the Belmond area. While working in Garner, Janet was introduced by a co-worker to Randy Lich and later his daughter, Chastity, who she loved as her own fl esh and blood. They were united in marriage on February 14, 1982 at the Goodell Methodist Church. They made their home in Dows for a short time before moving to the family farm in Goodell. While living in Goodell, they welcomed a daughter, Christina (Tina) and later lived in Lovillia in Southern Iowa for two years. They later moved back to the family farm until a house fire took their home in 1991, then moved to Belmond in 1993, where she made her home until her passing. While in Goodell, Janet began working for Amicare as a home health aide. She took care of many people throughout Northern Iowa as well as a few people in her own home, namely a family friend dying of cancer and her mother who passed of cancer also. While in Belmond taking care of family, Randy and Janet’s prayers of being blessed with another child became a reality, as Austin was born. During the time of her children’s growing up she worked at many different jobs in Belmond, including True Value, P&G in the meat department, Accents on Main, and daycare in her home. One job that she loved signifi cantly was being a Creative Memories consultant for many years. She highly valued keeping lasting memories for the next generation and she held many events making many new friends along the way. Janet was also very involved in many organizations and community service projects. She was a 40 year member of the Goodell American Legion Auxiliary, serving in many different capacities (Unit President, County President, and various chair positions) and functions (Watermelon Days, Halloween night and sending off packages to troops) and most recently finished her 2nd term as the 8th District President in July. She belonged to the Belmond VFW Auxiliary for many years. She was a Boy Scout leader and always a faithful supporter of Boy Scout and Cub Scout events. She was a longtime member of BCSW and enjoyed working the Power Show and running the 4th of July cake walk.

One of Janet’s favorite things was volunteering at her church. Janet faithfully accepted the Lord in 1981, since that time, she spent her life trying to be molded and shaped into the person God wanted her to be. Because of her love for the Lord and her willingness to serve her church family at the Evangelical Free Church, she was involved as a Sunday school teacher for many years, was church secretary for a time as well, but the apple of her eye was working with her husband in starting the B.A.F.Y. (Belmond Area Free Youth) Program and leading it for 13 years. Every youth that came was special to her. She always tried to pray and keep in touch with as many youth as she could.

Janet is survived by her husband, Randy, children, Chastity of Terra Haute, IN, Christina “Tina” and husband, Jason of Belmond, Austin at home, two grandchildren, Roger Simpson Jr, Kody Simpson, brother, Duane Hanson and wife, Jean of Goodell, beloved nephews, Ben Hanson and wife, Danielle and their children, Barrin Hanson and his children, Barrick Hanson and his wife, Christina, and numerous other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, child, Casey, niece, Bethany Ann Hanson and great-niece, Haylee.

JEANETTE MAE SCHRODER
July 20, 1922 - August 30, 2013

Jeanette Mae Schroder, 91, passed away on August 30, 2013, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.

Private family services were held September 7 at Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond with internment at the Belmond Cemetery.

Jeanette Mae, the daughter of Elias L. and Hilma (Pierson) Klinefelter, was born on July 20, 1922, in Alexander, Iowa. She graduated from Alexander High School, Class of 1940. On September 10, 1941, she married Ernest E. Schroder in Princeton, Missouri. To this marriage was born four children: Ronald, Steven, Peggy, and Nancy.

She was a longtime member of the Rebekah Lodge, a fraternal order and a service organization. As a Rebekah, Jeanette held various offi ces, including Noble Grand, during her membership. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, embroidering, crafting, and playing bridge with her friends.

Jeanette was a devoted mother and grandmother. For several years she kept journals of weather, daily life, and trials and tribulations. In reading many of those entries, she reminded us of how our family was constantly connected. For her, any time spent together made for a good day, ha!

Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernie; her sisters, Bernadine Chandler, Evenette Eden, Mildred Dorr, LaVonne McCoy; and her brother, E.R. “Shorty” Klinefelter.

She is survived by her children, Ronald (Kathy) Schroder, Steven (Teresa) Schroder, Peggy (Al) Hansen, and Nancy (Lewis) Schaal; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

JAMES CRAMER
March 25, 1926 - September 12, 2013

James Arnold Cramer, the son of Jelske and Helena (Terry) Cramer, was born on March 25, 1926, on his family farm near Blairsburg, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, attending country school and graduating from Blairsburg High School in 1943.

On April 8, 1947, James was united in marriage with Helen Howard in Grand Junction, Iowa. The couple made their home and raised their six children on the family farm. James served as school board director of the Wall Lake #5 country school. The couple enjoyed playing cards - Bridge and 500, going to dances, traveling and after they retired, they would spend the winter months in Arizona. James was proud to be a farmer and loved his life of farming.

James was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and past president of the parish council. He was a member of Knights of Columbus serving as Grand Knight, District Deputy and as a State Program Director. He was also a charter member of the Eagle Grove 4th Degree Assembly.

James passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2013, at the Clarion Wellness and Rehab Center, at the age of 87 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Helen on August 5, 2001; brother, Eugene Cramer and a special friend Mavis Martin.

Survivors include his children: Michael Cramer and wife Linda of Minneapolis, MN, Robert Cramer and wife Jackie of Reading, PA, Paul Cramer of Oxnard, CA, Paulette Cramer of Omaha, NE, Dan Cramer and wife Margaret of Clarion and Joan Cramer and husband Bob Nagel of Hopkins, MN and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove. Visitation was Monday, with a Rosary and Visitation at Foust Funeral Home. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Eagle Grove.

MARY SUE MCCORMICK
January 12, 1929 - September 14, 2013

Mary Sue McCormick, 84, of Clarion passed away Saturday, September 14, 2013, at the Clarion Wellness and Rehabilitation Center in Clarion.

Funeral services for Mary Sue McCormick will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at the Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion with Pastor Doug Love officiating. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion and will continue one hour prior to the service.

Mary Sue was born in Tryon, NC, on January 12, 1929. She was the youngest member in her family. On August 3, 1949, she was united in marriage to Duane McCormick. She enjoyed the outdoors and the four seasons that Iowa provided. She was a loving mother to her three sons.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas J. McCormick located Houston, TX and William O. McCormick located in Fort Mill, SC.; four grandchildren, James A. McCormick and Bridget R. I. McCormick Streeb, Matthew V. McCormick and Vanessa I. McCormick.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas S. Ford and Mattie Matilda Cantrell Ford; sisters, Madeline Carruth and Margret Ziek; brother, Thomas C. Ford; husband, Duane James McCormick and oldest son, Raymond James McCormick.

MARY ANNE WATTS FOLLETT
February 9, 1952 - September 17, 2013

Mary Anne Watts Follett, daughter of Wilber Leroy Watts and Blanche Laura Poolman Watts, was born February 9, 1952, in Clarion, Iowa. Mary passed away September 17, 2013, at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa at the age of 61.

Service of Remembrance was held Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson. Funeral service was officiated by the Rev. Gordon Moen. Interment will be a later date at the Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson.

Mary was raised on a farm southwest of Clarion and graduated from Clarion High School in 1970. Through high school, Mary was active in band, choir and 4H. After high school, Mary attended college at Iowa Central Community College and continued to show milking shorthorn cattle at the Iowa State Fair for several years.

On January 21, 1972, she was united in marriage to Doug Follett at First Congregational Church in Clarion. To this union two daughters were born Lori and Lacy. They made their home in Clarion until 1982 when they moved to Jefferson. Mary worked as a deputy treasurer at the Greene County Courthouse and later as a customer service representative for McFarland Clinic and a receptionist at Greene County Medical Center.

Mary enjoyed animals her entire life, raising small breeds of dogs in the last few years before her death. Mary also loved spending time with her family, especially her grandkids.

Mary is survived by her husband, Doug of Jefferson; daughters: Lori (Tony) Harrah and Lacy (Adam) Follett-Brubaker of Jefferson; 6 grandchildren: Steven Follett, Michael Harrah, Kayleigh Harrah, Jerrett Harrah, Julia Follett and Jacob Brubaker; brothers Leroy (Juanita) Watts of Clarion, IA, Leland (Carol) Watts of Clarion, IA, Dennis (Marlo) Watts of Dows, IA, and Gary (Jeanne) Watts of Riceville, IA; sister Lura (Dwayne) Nelson of Greentop, MO; Brothers-in-law: Jeff (Leslie) Follett of Newton, IA and Jon Follett of Ft Dodge, IA; sistersin- law: Jan Follett of Phoenix, AZ and Dawn (Keith) Holdgrafer of Webster City, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brother Leonard Watts and infant brother Charles Watts; and her father and mother-in-law Don and Colleen Follett. Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home, Jefferson, was in charge of the arrangements.

OPAL DENIO
August 23, 1928  - September 22, 2013

Opal DeNio, 85, of Dows passed away peacefully Sunday, September 22, 2013, at her home in rural Dows.

Funeral services for Opal DeNio will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 1:00 p.m., at the Abundant Life Chapel, 202 Fairview Street, in Dows with Pastor Bruce Klapp officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East, in Clarion and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Opal Viola (Hillman) DeNio was born to Levi and Blanche (Pruitt) Hillman on August 23, 1928 in Lena, Louisiana.

Opal married Verl E. DeNio on July 25, 1952 in Alexandria, Louisiana. They made their first home in rural Dows, and have continued to farm to this day.

Opal was a founding member of her beloved church, Abundant Life Chapel. The Lord gave Opal a love for flowers and she in return ministered to many touching each of their senses with bouquets at the altar, roses floating in rose bowls, and outdoor splendor.

Opal also enjoyed crocheting, painting and photography. She was a “weed’s worst enemy!” She had a “miracle” green thumb and loved spending time in her garden. Her harvest was shared by all who knew her.

The love for her God and her family superseded all.

Opal is survived by her husband of 61 years, Verl of Dows; her 3 children: Judy Cassen of Fort Dodge, Greg (Linda) DeNio of Dows and Nancy (Thad) Boyington of Hampton; her 5 grandchildren: Joel (Courtney) DeNio of Hampton, Susanne DeNio of Minneapolis, Kelli (Josh) Enabnit of Clear Lake, Ryan (Nicole) Boyington of Ankeny and Andrew (Christina) DeNio of Dows; 10 great-grandchildren: Leighton Memmer, McKayla DeNio, Madelynn DeNio, Jaxon Morgan, Sophia DeNio, Ava DeNio, Stella DeNio, Brayden DeNio, Penelope DeNio, Brooks Boyington, along with her siblings, William Hillman, Marjorie Brown and J.T. Hillman.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents Levi and Blanche Hillman and five of her siblings: Rena, Mable, Ray, LeRoy, and Everett. Ewing Funeral Home, Clarion, is in charge of the arrangements.
