Thelma Estaline was born June 11, 1920 in Webster City to Harry and Ethel (Jones) Sefton. She graduated from high school in Clarion and continued her appreciation for education at Drake University in pursuit of her teaching degree. After graduating from college Thelma taught in a country school. She had a strong passion for education which was surrounded with love of her school children. She took great pride in her profession and valued the needs of her students. Thelma taught in Galt, Popejoy and Dows where she retired after 35 years in the teaching profession. She continued as an educator by volunteering as a Sunday school teacher at the Presbyterian Church in Dows. Thelma had a fondness for traveling, and she participated in senior bus trips to venture around the countryside and see the sights with her friends and family. Thelma also had a passion for sewing and gardening. She enjoyed volunteering her time to be an active part of the community. Thelma was an outstanding instructor, a caring neighbor and a loving family member. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Irene, Evelyn and Cleo; brother Evert; nephews Harry James and Eugene “Nick” Nicholson and his wife Shirley. The memory of Thelma will be in the hearts and minds of her many nieces and nephew and with her extended nieces and nephews, along with her neighbors and friends. KEITH LOUX THURMAN DENIO

Thurman E. DeNio, 94, formerly of Dows and Lake Cornelia, died January 21 in Duluth, MN. Thurman Earl was born December 8, 1918 in Wright County. He attended school near Galt and then in Dows. He operated an implement dealership and later farmed. He was preceded in death by his wives Carolyn (Drury) and Colleen (Eckvall Sullivan) and his son David. Survivors include his son Douglas (Lynne) DeNio; daughter Susan (Ron Heneley); his sister Doris (Chuck) Kessler; and brother Verl (Opal) DeNio. James Charles, the son of James
C. and Elizabeth Christie
Peterson was born on August 11,
1918 near Goodell. Jim grew up
in the Goodell area. He
graduated from Goodell High
School in 1936. In 1942, Jim was
drafted. He served his country
during World War II in New
Guinea. After the war, he
returned to Goodell where Jim
owned and operated a grocery
store.
Jim was united in marriage to
Eleanor Leebrick on May 11,
1954. The couple made their home
in Belmond, where they were
blessed with four children. Jim
deliverered frieght for several
years in Belmond. He also was
employed as a carpenter for a
time. Jim retired from Winnebago
Industries Saw Mill in Forest
City in 1981.
Jim enjoyed taking things apart
and putting them back together
again, even if they were working
fine. He liked working on
tractors and was able to assist
his son Max in restoring a John
Deere. The family even remembers
him converting several school
buses in campers. Jim was a
member of the EUB Church in
Goodell and later the United
Methodist Church in Belmond. Jim
served the church as trustee, as
well as other positions. He was
also a member of the American
Legion in Goodell.
Jim is survived by his children,
Rex, Theresa Crotty and husband,
Morris, Calista Henry, Max and
wife Jennifer, seven
grandchildren, Luke (Melissa),
Ruth, Adam, Sara, Kaitlyn,
Kelsey, Kinslie, and numerous
other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his
wife, Eleanor and two brothers,
Edward and Donald.

passed away February 2, 2013 at
Bethany Manor surrounded by her
family. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 1:30 p.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial followed in the Story City Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday from 4 to 6 at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City. Pauline “Polly” was born on October 3, 1919 on a farm near Goldfield, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Myrtle Hilderbrand. She graduated from Goldfield in 1937 and from the American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines, IA. She worked as a county clerk at the Wright County Courthouse in Clarion, IA; as a stenographer – typist for the US Employment Service in Fort Dodge, IA; as a stenographer – secretary for the Army Air Force Bombardier School in Big Spring, TX; as an accountant for Gambles in Oelwein, IA; and from 1961 – 1984 as an interviewer, clerk, secretary for the Newton Job Service in Newton, IA. On August 28, 1941, Pauline married Bill Henry. Bill’s promotions as a Rock Island Railroad Agent allowed for Pauline’s numerous jobs. After they retired, Pauline and Bill traveled to many countries and enjoyed most of the states and Canada with their Sunday School pals from Newton. She was an Elder at the United Presbyterian Church. She loved to bake cookies, pies, muffins, cinnamon rolls, and deserts. She and Bill delivered her sweet treats and meals on wheels in Newton for many years. She loved babysitting her grandchildren and holding her great grandchildren. After 40 years in Newton, Pauline and Bill lived four years at the Meadows in Clarion and lived 13 years at the Timberland Village in Story City to be closer to her daughter and family. Survivors include: her daughter, Vicki and John Kruger, her son-inlaw; three grandchildren, Kristine (Devin) Fuhrman of Ankeny, Michael (Heather) Kruger of Huxley, Kimberly (Eric) Mueggenberg of Des Moines; five great grandchildren, McKenna and Kaylin Fuhrman, Braden and Breanna Kruger and Lilly Mueggenberg; and two sisters, Rose Mary Byrd of New Hampton, IA and Rodean Frakes of Goldfield, IA. She was preceded in death by Bill in 2011, her parents, her sister Marjorie Whyte and brothers-in-law John Whyte and Charles Byrd. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church Choir. Ric, the son of Jim and Jean White was born February 28, 1955. He graduated from Dows High School in 1973. After a year long trip to New Zealand, he worked as a mason in Iowa Falls, Indiana and Texas. Ric was a free spirit who loved his family and friends. He met life’s challenges head on. He enjoyed bluegrass concerts, camping, hiking, canoeing, and vacationing in the Colorado mountains. He is survived by his wife, Cinda of San Marcos, Texas; son, Josh of Dallas, Texas; mother, Jean of Dows; sister, Pat (Bob) Drury of Belmond; brother, Jim (Jan) White of Ankeny; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Jim White Sr.
FRANCES NEUBERGER Frances B. Neuberger, 93, most recently of Garner, formerly a longtime resident of Klemme, died February 21, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City. Services were held February 27 at the Klemme United Methodist Church. Burial was in Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. Memorials may be directed to her daughter Claudia Neuberger, 2508 Unity Avenue North, Golden Valley, MN 55422. Frances, the daughter of Frank and Gertrude (Geddes) Schulz, was born on a farm near Miller on January 4, 1920. She attended school in Miller and graduated from Garner High School in 1937. She married Lester Neuberger of Klemme on August 9, 1942 at the Klemme United Methodist Church. Their union was blessed with three children. Frances and Lester lived most of their married life on a farm east of Klemme. She was a devoted wife and partner in the duties of the farm, and focused her energies and love on providing a nurturing home. She worked hard and always raised a large garden and chickens. She was a wonderful cook and was known for her fried chicken, canned foods, and baking. Frances was a member of the Klemme United Methodist Church, UMW, church circle, and the Grandmother's Club. Her pastimes were reading, coffee club, playing cards and bingo, bird and horse watching, writing letters and dancing. Frances never missed the opportunity to send a card or note to her family and friends. Frances and Lester enjoyed traveling with their children across the U.S. In recent times Frances and Claudia looked forward to trips and occasions together. After Frances and Lester moved into town they spent 24 winters in Weslaco, TX where they made countless friends. Lester died in June 2004, and Frances made her home at Prairie View Apartments in Garner. Frances will be remembered for her love for others, her warm personality, quick wit, bountiful faith, and gentle nature. She loved to be called Grandma and cherished times spent with young people. She loved to share stories of growing up and was always up for an adventure. She was preceded in death by her husband; son Mark (1975); son Franklin (1988); and brother Robert Schulz and his wife Muriel. Survivors include her daughter Claudia; grandchildren Kari (Neuberger-Eidemiller-Gatlin) and husband Jason of Apollo Beach, FL, Kyle (Beth) Neuberger of Mason City, Aaron Opheim of Allison, and Megan (Opheim) Bagley and husband Brent of Ames; daughter-in-law Sinva (Neuberger) Ophiem and husband Randy of Mason City; and great grandchildren Tyler and Trevor Eidemiller, Ella Rose Bagley, Destinee Gatlin and Jaxon Tate.

Memorials may be made in Don’s name and sent to Dugger Funeral Home, Box 233, Belmond. Donald, the son of Harold and Erma Felton Nielson, was born April 19, 1918 in Belmond. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1933 and then attended the University of Minnesota, earning a bachelors degree. During World War II Don served his country as a Classification Specialist and was stationed in Wyoming. After the war Don returned to Belmond where he would make his home. He worked as a bookkeeper, first in Fort Dodge and later with a family business in Osage. All the while, Don maintained his home in Belmond. Upon retirement he worked for a lumber company in Belmond. Don lived at the Belmond Community Apartments for 20 years, and in the last years he resided at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Don belonged to the Belmond United Methodist Church. He enjoyed his life at the apartments and made many special friends both there and throughout Belmond over his lifetime. He very much enjoyed cooking, and would make cookies and candy to share with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, a brother, and a nephew. Donald is survived by nephews Tom McSweeney of Pickering, MO and John McSweeney of Cedar Falls; and great nieces Natasha Hegmann and Brenna McSweeney. TOM FINNELL
Per Tom’s request cremation rites have been accorded and no services are planned. His cremated remains will be spread on a ranch in Arizona at a later date. Tom’s pride and joy was his family. He loved horses and he was happiest when he was in his Wranglers, cowboy hat and boots. Tom had a great sense of humor which he continued sharing until his passing. Tom was the youngest and only brother to six sisters, four of whom have preceded him in death. Tom is survived by his wife of 39 years, Marilyn (Bohy), step daughter, Deanna (Mark) Ziino of Indianola, his children, Christopher (Sue) Finnell of Winfield, Scott Finnell of Dallas, TX and Amy Finnell of Chariton; five grandchildren, one great grandson, his sisters, Betty Sjulin of Oregon and Rose Howell of Beatrice, NE; sister-in-law, Barbara Hoffman of Des Moines, brothersin- law, Wade Dimmitt of Red Oak and Paul Fletcher of Chandler, AZ, many nieces and nephews, and his very close friend, John Ferguson of Hamburg, IA. Funeral services for Hilda Akers were held on Wednesday February 20, 2013 at First Lutheran Church of Dows. Pastor Ron Nelson officiated. Burial wasin Otis Grove Cemetery east of Dows. Dugger Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows was in charge of arrangements. Hilda, the daughter of Jens and Lillie Peterson Christensen was born September 22, 1916 near Dows in Oakland Township. She grew up there and attended country school. Hilda then attended and graduated from Popejoy High School in 1934. She moved to a farm north of Hampton. It was during this time, Hilda worked at a Bakery and Grocery Store in Hampton. Hilda was united in marriage to J. Maurice Akers on October 12, 1941. The couple made their home on the Aker’s family farm near Dows. Hilda worked at home as a housewife and mother. Maurice passed away in 1973, and soon after Hilda moved into Dows. She lived there until moving to Hampton assisted living in 2011. Hilda was a devoted member of First Lutheran Church in Dows. Hilda sewed numerous quilts at the church and was still knitting blankets at the time of her death. She is remembered as an avid reader. Hilda is survived by her children, Joyce Davis and husband, Michael of DeSoto, Wisc., Linda Dow and husband, Curtis of Dows, Janet VanOvermeer and husband, Al of Sioux Falls, SD, John Akers and wife, Ann of Charleston, NC, son-in-law, Phil Borleske of Vinton, nine grandchildren, six step grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, sister, Ethel Spencer of California, sister-in-law, Ilene Christensen of Charles City and numerous other nieces and nephews. PATRICIA BENSON Patricia (Jaacks) Benson, 82, died February 27, 2013 at the Garden Valley Rehabilitation and Care Facility in Kansas City. Services are tentatively set for 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 4 at the Alexander United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Amsterdam Cemetery, Kanawha. Esther Louise Nelson Keith was born October 10, 1922 to Norman John Nelson and Louise Hansina Nelson. Norman had immigrated in 1910 from Norway thru Ellis Island. He married Louise (of Danish descent) in 1915. They resided in Eagle Grove, Wright, Iowa, where Esther was born. She had two older sisters both preceded her in death, Eileen Sullivan and Dorothy Sherman. One younger brother, Robert Nelson also preceded her in death. Her youngest sister Ruth Eudy of Eagle Grove and her younger brother Harold and wife Betty Nelson of Virginia survive her. Esther married Howard Martin Keith on January 6, 1940 and they started their family of three, Jon Howard, Anita Jo Cowen, and Mary Louise Sullivan. The family moved to California approximately 1945 and have made their home in Bakersfield, Kern, California. Howard preceded her in death August 14, 2001. Esther loved to fish and travel in their RV. Her favorite fishing spot was Lake Meade, Nevada and Arizona. She taught many a person how to correctly filet a large mouth bass. She was a seamstress, loved to crochet, and really loved to cook. As Esther gradually lost her sight she would remember her favorite recipes and was still able to cook. Esther is survived by her three children, Jon and his wife Kay Keith of Bakersfield, their two boys David and Paul and three great granddaughters, Isabell, Lexy, and Chloe Keith. Daughter Anita Jo of Bakersfield, and daughter Mary Louise Sullivan and her husband Henry of Mt. Mesa and their three children, Mike, Brian and Tina. In addition to her sister and brother, she has many caring nieces and nephews many of whom reside in the Iowa area. She died peacefully on Saturday morning, February 16, 2013 at age 90 at Evergreen where she had been a resident for five years. A big
