Mary C. Proeger, 92, most recently residing at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond, died December 27, 2013 at Iowa Specialty Hospital - Belmond. Services were held December 30 at the Belmond United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Mary Catherine, the daughter of Thomas Andrew and Grace Crystal (Hartwig) Whelan, was born November 7, 1921 in Belmond. She attended Belmond schools and graduated in 1939. She was baptized and joined the Methodist Church, which became her life-long faith home, on May 20, 1942.

Mary married Luther W. Proeger at the Methodist parsonage on July 29, 1945. They were blessed with daughters Kathlyn Louise and Barbara Ellen. The couple worked and raised their daughters in Belmond.

She was a creative and artistic lady who for many years worked at the Thompson Seed Company office. She did graphic design work, including the development of logos for seed bags, signage, letterheads and marketing materials. At home she enjoyed creating her own cards, letterheads, and other personalized items, and used her keen vision and sense of place in her hobby of photography. She worked in the office at the Belmond Hospital until her retirement.

Mary served a number of terms on the hospital board. She also took great pride in serving as church treasurer, district treasurer of the United Methodist Women, teaching Wednesday afternoon Youth Mission School, and other church roles. Mary and Luther instilled their values and faith in their daughters. Mary, Luther and the kids also spent countless hours caring for the Belmond Cemetery. Their love for a manicured lawn could be seen at their home and large, weed-free gardens. Mary and Luther looked forward to visits with family and spending time with grandchildren.

During retirement it was a rarity to not see the couple together. Their relationship lasted over 66 years. Luther preceded Mary in death on June 30, 2008. Mary maintained an active life until moving to the Rehabilitation Center in June of this year.
