Alan Fuller

September 28, 2010

Alan D. Fuller, 69, died at his home in Bellevue, Iowa, on Saturday, September 4, 2010. He had been ill with pulmonary fibrosis for a number of years.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 9, in Countryside, Illinois.

Alan Duane was born on May 27, 1941, the son of Mac and Emma Fuller and one of seven children. He grew up in Goodell and attended elementary school there. He graduated from the Belmond High School in 1959 where he played football. At an early age Alan began hammering nails into every available board and he continued to do this his entire life. His avocation was building. As a young man he moved to the Chicago area where he worked for General Motors for 29 years and was active in UAW Local 719. Alan married Helen Luick in 1959 and they had four children, Kim, Brian, Glenn and Jeff. Later he married Nancy Murphy and they were together for 35 years.

Alan loved the river and for many years he vacationed in Bellevue. He taught his children and grandchildren to water ski. Upon retiring ten years ago he made his permanent residence there.

He was preceded in death by his son, Brian; and sisters, Evelyn Jean (in infancy) and Ruth Ann Kling.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; children, Kim, Glenn and Jeff of the Chicago area; step-children, Lisa Murphy, Beverly Millsap and Brian Murphy; 19 grandchildren; and siblings, Loretta Ruppert, Lorraine Ruka, Glenn Fuller and Bruce Fuller.

Larry McAlpine

Rev. Larry McAlpine, 60, of Council Bluffs, died on Sunday, September 5, 2010.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 9, at the Salem United Methodist Church.

Larry grew up in Rowan and graduated from the Belmond High School. He entered the United Methodist ministry in 1976 and served congregations throughout Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Connie; sons, Larry (April) McAlpine and Thomas (Carrie) McAlpine; daughter, Jennifer (Doug) Maaske; grandchildren, Faith and Joel Petersen, Riley and Samuel McAlpine, Jordain, Dylan and Jaden Cooper, Kody McAlpine and Lillian Maaske; and brother, Rex McAlpine.

Faith Mandal

Faith A. Mandal, 89, of Dows, died on Sunday, September 5, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 10, at the Morgan United Methodist Church east of Dows. Burial was in the Morgan Church cemetery.

Faith Alvera, was born on February 1, 1921, the daughter of Ernest and Louise Rankin Hackbarth. She was a graduate of the Dows Community High School. She attended Ellsworth Junior College at Iowa Falls and Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching degree. She taught country school in Morgan and Oakland Townships for six years. On June 30, 1946, Faith married Conrad Mandal, husband and soul mate for 64 years. They lived for a short time in Iowa Falls and two children were born. After the death of Faith’s father, they moved back to the family farm in Morgan Township. In addition to working side by side with Connie on the farm, Faith also worked at the Dows Care Center for 20 years as the laundry supervisor, retiring at the age of 80.

Faith will be remembered by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren for her love and patience and always having the time to sit with them and entertain them. They always loved to go to Grandma Faith’s house. She was a great cook and always had something freshly baked. Her gentle and loving smile and keen sense of humor will be missed by all her family.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Milton and Carroll Hackbarth.

Faith is survived by her husband; daughter, Kathie (Neil) Muhlenbruch; son, John (Cindy) Mandal of Dows; granddaughters, Stacey (Wes) Stover of Huxley and Krystal Muhlenbruch of Vernon, New Jersey; grandson, Tyson (Kendra) Muhlenbruch of Des Moines; step-granddaughter, Heather (Eric) Darland of Eagle Grove; step-grandson, Jeremy (Christa) Nichols of Alden; great-grandchildren, Brady, Trinity and Blake Stover, Jacob and Haley Jo Darland and Lexi and Clay Nichols; and sister, Dolores (Richard) Hicks of Hampton.

Brianne Pals

Brianne M. Pals, 20, of Belmond, died on Monday, September 6, 2010, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 10, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Troy Pflibsen officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.

Brianne Marie, the daughter of Dighton and Krista Kuhlers Pals, was born on September 15, 1989 in Mankato, Minnesota. At an early age the family moved to Belmond. She graduated from the Belmond-Klemme High School in 2008. Brianne then attended NIACC in Mason City where she graduated in 2010 with a medical assistant degree. She was currently enrolled in the Mercy School of Radiologic Technology in Mason City. While in high school Brianne participated in softball, basketball, volleyball and track. She worked at the P&G Market and Kelly’s Beach Club.

Brianne enjoyed spending time with her many friends, going to the Pizza Ranch, getting pedicures, roller-blading and working out. Her true enjoyment came from the time she spent with her beloved nieces as Aunt B. Brianne was confirmed at the First Reformed Church in Meservey. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran in Belmond.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Marlyn Kuhlers; and great-grandparents, Don and Doris Burk, Fred and Phyllis Pals, Ed Kuhlers and Ernest and Florence Kalkwarf.

Brianne is survived by her parents; sister, Julia (Shane) Eckhoff and their children, Emily, Aubrey and Ryleigh of Belmond; sister, Alyssa (Ryan) Snider of Urbandale; maternal grandmother, Pat (Al) Formanek of Clear Lake; paternal grandfather, Dean Pals of Belmond; paternal grandmother, Miriam Kalkwarf of Larkspur, Colorado; maternal great-grandmother, Grace Kuhlers of Belmond; aunts and uncles, Kent and Kim Kuhlers of Meservey and their children, Olivia and Colton; Kari and Mike Mennenga of Meservey and their daughter, Shelby; and Deanna and Dwight Koenen of Latimer and their children, Shaun, Lindsay (Bret) Harrison and Noah.

Mitchel Hartwig

September 14, 2010

Mitchel Dean Hartwig, 67, died on Saturday, September 11, 2010, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Center in Mason City, after a fight with melanoma.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 15, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thornton. Interment will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Mitchel was born in Belmond on June 28, 1943, to George “Tom” and Irene Hartwig. He grew up on a farm outside of Thornton and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran. He married Rosalie Suntken on June 23, 1965 and the couple proudly raised three children. Mitchel was a graduate of the Thornton High School Class of 1961 and counted spending time with his classmates in the years that followed one of his great enjoyments.

Mitchel was very active in the community, serving on the boards of Mason City Gas and Oil, St. Paul Lutheran and the Meservey-Thornton Community School. He was very engaged in the activities of his children, serving as a 4-H Leader, basketball coach and member of the booster club.

Mitchel enjoyed time with his family and especially his seven grandchildren. He was also fond of fishing trips up north, playing in fast pitch softball leagues, playing cards, coffee with "the boys" and collecting farm toys and other antiques from across the Midwest.   

He was preceded in death by his parents. 

Mitchel is survived by his wife; son, Guy (Jill) and grandchildren, Rachel, Emmery and Camryn of Woodbury, Minnesota; daughter, Angie (Rick) Kinseth and grandchildren, Benjamin, Morgan, Elijah and Maya of Belmond; son, Matthew of Washington, DC; sister, Leilani (Ron) Dannen of Mason City; brother, Max (Gaylynn) Hartwig of Lake Forest, Illinois; and aunt, Doris Nicholson.

Gertie Frohling

Gertie Frohling, 96, of Rowan, died on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 16, at the United Church of Rowan, with burial in the Graceland Cemetery near Rowan. The Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond was in charge of the arrangements.

Gertie, the daughter of Bernhard and Helen Pals Koenen, was born on August 12, 1914. She was educated in rural Meservey. Gertie married Herman Frohling on April 26, 1934. To this union four children were born. They started farming north of Belmond, moving south of Meservey in 1940. Later, Gertie and Herman moved to a farm east of Rowan. They worked, lived and raised their family in the Rowan area until retiring from farming, when they moved into Rowan. Herman passed away in 1984. Gertie continued to live in Rowan until entering the Rehabilitation Center in November 2009.

Gertie was a true farm wife, working in the fields side by side with Herman. She milked cows and went back to the house to make delicious meals. She was known for her bread baking skills and won first prize at the county fair with her peach pie. An active member of the Rowan Methodist Church and women’s society, the highlight of her week was Monday quilting at the church.

Gertie was preceded in death by her husband; daughter-in-law, Jessie Frohling; granddaughter, Vicki Frohling; grandson-in-law, Stephen Stork; great-granddaughters, Tiffaney, Sondra and Marcie Stork; sister, Kate Meinders; brothers, Peter, Bernhard Jr. and Johnny Koenen; two brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

Survivors include her children, Eugene (Ardith) Frohling of Clarion, Bonnie (Robert) Leist of Rowan, Diane (Gordon) Sandman of Belmond and Randall (Pamela) Frohling of Belmond; grandchildren, Leslie Stork of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota, Gene (Kristi) Frohling of Rowan, Robin (Bruce) Meyer of Rowan, Roxann (Paul) Swenson of Polk City, Ronda (William) Moss of Littleton, Colorado, Mary (Tom) Whitney of Aurora, Illinois, Lisa (Scott) Madsen of Shawnee, Kansas, Guy Frohling of Rowan and Lucas Frohling of Seacacus, New Jersey; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Grace Larson of Britt.

Tressie Stadtlander

September 14, 2010

Tressie Stadtlander, 88, of Meservey, died on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 14, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey. Interment was in the Meservey Cemetery.  

Tressie was born on March 16, 1922 at Lakota, a daughter of Edward and Alice (Bockholt) Abbas. On October 28, 1939, she married Bennie Stadtlander. They farmed together for area farmers and themselves in the Meservey area. Bennie passed away on May 29, 1989 and Tressie moved into Meservey.

Tressie became a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey in 1940. She was a member of the women’s ministry and was devoted to service of the church. She loved traveling with her brothers and sisters and sharing birthdays and holidays with family.

Tressie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters; and two brothers.

Surviviors include sonsm Edward (Janice) Stadtlander of Meservey and Lee (Cathy) Stadtlander of Ankeny; grandchildren, Annette (Tony) Cockrell, Darcy Lutgen and friend, Dave Ruiter, Shelly Black and friend, Rohn Kuhlers, Danelle Stadtlander and friend, Mike Balek, Troy (Alicia) Stadtlander and Rachal (Mike) Bryan; great grandchildren, Cody, Tristan, Abby, Adam, Grant, Caden, Carlee, Caylee, Olivia and Matthew; sisters, Fannie (Warren) Braund, Edna (Clarence) Isebrand and Esther (Ordel) Dickmeyer; and brother, Teus Abbas.

Memorials may be directed to the church or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Dalton Reineking

September 28, 2010

Dalton L. Reineking, 59, of Mason City, died on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, October 2, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, with Reverend Jim Magelssen officiating. Inurnment will be in the Coulter Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel in Mason City. Memorials may be directed in Dalton’s name to the American Cancer Society, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Dalton was born on August 1, 1951 in Coulter, to Wilbert and Dorothy (Christiansen) Reineking. He attended grade school at CAL Community and later moved to Rowan. He graduated from the Belmond High School in 1969. He went on to graduate from NIACC and Southern Colorado College in Pueblo. Dalton married Kay Cannon in 1979 and to that union two children were born. They later divorced.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lowell; and brother-in-law, James Freeze.

He is survived by his daughter, Sarah (Dr. James) Hsiao of Orlando, Florida; son, Kevin Reineking of Tulsa, Oklahoma; his beloved companion, Jean Bruesewitz and her children, Tracy (Rob) Teeter, Bryan (Nicole) Balduf and Brittney Balduf; his sister, Maxine Freese of Coulter; brother, Loren (Shirley) Reineking of Des Moines; nephew, Norlyn (Lois) Freeze; nieces, Tracy (Scott) Strohm and Kerri (James) Curtis; and dear friends, Jayne and Brian Carlson, Bob and Sarah Kress and Kevin and Mary Jo Griffin.

Everett Smith

September 28, 2010

Everett E. Smith, 101, a resident of The Highlands at Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, died on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, of injuries sustained in a fall.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, September 29, at the Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.   

Everett was the husband of Gladys Kelly Smith, with whom he had shared nearly ten years of marriage. He was predeceased in 1988 by his first wife, former Rowan resident Ann Rietz Smith, sister of Paul, Eb, Karl, Nina and Muriel.

He is survived by his step-daughter, Gwen Kelly (James) Klein.

Gary Gartz

October 5, 2010

SMSgt. Gary R. Gartz, 73, died on Sunday, September 26, 2010, at the Silver Tree Nursing Home in Schertz, Texas, following a three-year fight with cancer.

A Rosary was recited on Thursday, September 30, at the Schertz Funeral Home and funeral services were held on Friday, October 1, at the Chapel 1 on Randolph Air Force Base. Interment with military honors was held in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Gary was born on July 10, 1937 in Belmond, the son of Fred and Henrietta Gartz. He graduated from the Belmond High School in 1955 and joined the U.S. Air Force. He served his country for 33 years in Texas, Alaska, Nebraska, California and twice in Korea. He married his wife, Benita in August 1958.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; sister, Dorothy; and brothers, Leo and William.

He is survived by his wife, Benita; children, Annette (Dennis) Bouressa and Randy (Kathryn) Gartz; grandchildren, Michael (Christina) Carrington, Danielle (Justin) Wilks, Taylor (Jen) Gartz, Faryn (Billy) Carr and Nicole (Jay) Thompson; great-grandchildren, Alex, Noah, Jackson and Jax; sisters, Muriel Hankes of Waverly, Leota Talley of Stillwater, Oklahoma and Maxine McVey Whitty of Belmond; and sister-in-law, Dolly Gartz of Kansas.
