Eva Henning

Eva M. Henning, 93, of Latimer, died on Sunday, May 2, 2010,
at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in
Hampton.
Funeral services will be
held on Wednesday, May 5, at the Immanuel United Church of
Christ in Latimer. Burial will be in the Marion Center
Cemetery north of Latimer.
Eva Marjorie, the daughter of Frank and Nora Harlson
Carpenter, was born on December 13, 1916 in Thompson. She
was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Eva
attended school in South Dakota and graduated in 1934 from
high school in Letcher. She graduated from Augustana College
in Sioux Falls and received her South Dakota teaching
certificate. After moving to Iowa, Eva graduated from
Waldorf College in Forest City and obtained her Iowa
teaching certificate. Eva's life work was education. She was
the diligent and innovative teacher so many children
remember as their favorite. Eva married Wayne Henning on
April 16, 1944, at the St Paul's Lutheran Church in Latimer.
To this union were born Jacquelyn, Susan and twins, Steve
and Sally.
During her life-time she
belonged to many organizations and gave her best in all
phases of office and work. Eva belonged to the Hansen-Have
American Legion Auxiliary Post 658 of Latimer, Franklin
General Hospital Auxiliary, Latimer Parks Society, Koffee
Klub and Over Sixties Club. Eva was an active member of the
Immanuel United Church of Christ. She served on the
Christian Board of Education, flower committee, kitchen
committee and in other capacities. Eva also worked as a
long-time receptionist for the Willim Funeral Home in
Latimer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne in
2008; three brothers; and one sister.
Eva is survived by her children, Jacquie (Mike) Murphy of
Newton, Susan (Randy) DeBour of Latimer, Steve (Dawn) of
Latimer and Sally Eicher of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren,
Shelly and Brad Worthington, Brian and Shanda Murphy, Cara
and Brian Folkerts, Elizabeth and Eric Podolan, Tyler DeBour,
Casey Henning, Clint and Christie Henning and Andy and Sarah
Eicher; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Pearl Wolf of
Latimer; in-laws, Helen Carpenter of Hampton and Owen and
Juanita Henning of Marco Island, Florida.

Beverly Thorson
May 12, 2010
Beverly A. Thorson, 76, of Klemme, died unexpectedly on
Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason
City.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, May 10, at the Klemme United Methodist Church.
Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.
Beverly Ann, the daughter of Elmer and Faye (Bridges) Beier,
was born on August 2, 1933 in Beltrami, Minnesota. When she
was a young child the family moved to Iowa. Bev attended
Klemme rural schools and graduated from the Klemme High
School in 1950. Then she was employed for a time with the
First National Bank in Klemme. Beverly married Russell Wayne
Thorson on March 14, 1954. Their union was blessed with a
daughter and two sons. Beverly was employed as the Klemme
City Clerk for 37 years before retiring in 1999. In addition
she was the first director of the Klemme Public Library,
until 1996.
Bev was a life-long homemaker, loving wife and partner to
Russ and nurturing and caring mother and grandmother. Her
interests focused on her family foremost and she gave her
time and talents to the betterment of the community. In
addition to her service as city clerk and library director,
Bev served for a number of years on the Klemme City Council,
the Grandmother's Club and the Klemme Garden Club. She loved
to watch over City Park and the countless youth who played
there.
Bev loved her flowers and
always kept a yard filled with beautiful colors. She had a
passion for music and sang in the Hancock County Chorus and
the Music City Sweet Adelines. Bev and Russell attended the
Clear Lake Concert Series and the Clear Lake Municipal Band
concerts. Bev was an excellent cook and had numerous
specialties, including kumla, maidrites and kringla. Beverly's
faith was important to her. She was active in the Klemme
United Methodist Church, where she had been the church
financial secretary, in the UMW, sang at funerals and sang
in the church choir.
Bev was preceded in death by her parents; husband in June
1995; brothers, Eugene and Gordon Beier; and sister, Shirley
Doolittle.
Survivors include daughter, Barbara (Erling) Shultz of Mason
City and children, Sarah, Tom and Nathan; sons, Tom Thorson
of Klemme and Don (Michelle) Thorson of Rockwell
and children, Tyler and Laura; sisters, LaVonne Simon of
Winterset, Janis Smith of Webster City and Joann (Roger)
Hansen of Kanawha; brothers, Robert (Donna) Beier of
Pleasantville, Ronald Beier of Leonardville, Minnesota,
James Beier of Newtown, Pennsylvania and Roger (Linda) Beier
of Mason City; brother-in-law, Doug Doolittle of Webster
City; and sisters-in-law, Lorraine Thorson of Ankeny and
Jane Beier of Klemme.

Marie Stecher

Marie Stecher, 92, of Belmond, died on Friday, May 7, 2010,
at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, May 11, at the Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond.
Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Marie, the daughter of August and Anna (Eimbrink) Traeger,
was born on January 15, 1918 in McIntyre, Minnesota. At a
very young age Marie moved with her family to Iowa. It was
here that she attended country school at Pleasant Township
#8. Marie married Fred Stecher on February 26, 1942 in
Macon, Missouri. The couple made their home near Renwick
where they farmed and had three children. In 1949, they
moved east of Belmond where they farmed. In 1967, the couple
moved north of Belmond. After retiring from Winnebago in
Forest City, Marie was employed by Logan Design for many
years.
She enjoyed sewing and gardening. Marie is fondly remembered
for socializing with friends and family and playing cards in
later life. Marie moved to the Belmond Community Apartments
in 2006 and entered the Rehabilitation Center in 2008. Marie
attended the Belmond United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sister, Louise;
and brother, Carl.
Marie is survived by her children, Kay (Sharon) of Semora of
North Carolina; Dennis (Helen) of Lime Springs and Carolyn
(Kenneth) Mellott of Fairfield; grandchildren, Jami Dolan,
Jodi Braun, Jeff Mellott, Ann Pritchard and Kathy Stecher;
great-grandchildren, Alex, Shelby, Paityn, Kenna, Kate and
Emma; and sister, Edna Mae Willey of Belmond.

Eldon Pals
May 18, 2010
Eldon A. Pals, 64, formerly of Belmond, died on Saturday,
May 8, 2010, at the Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, May 20, at the Andrews
Funeral Home in Belmond, with Rev. Troy Pfilbsen
officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be in the
Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to
the services.
Eldon was born on September 27, 1945 in Hampton, to Dick D.L.
and Margaret (Kalkwarf) Pals. He graduated from the Belmond
High School in 1963. He enlisted in the United States Marine
Corps in 1966 and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. After
his honorable discharge in 1968 he attended NIACC in Mason
City, graduating in 1970. He worked at several area
companies, including Winnebago Industries in Forest City.
During his several years as a resident of the veterans home
he enjoyed crafts, bingo and watching TV.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother,
Keith; and brother-in-law, Roy Johnson.
Eldon is survived sisters, Shirley (Ronald) Johnson and
Marilyn (Larry) Suntken of Belmond; brothers, Marlin Pals of
Lincoln, Nebraska and Howard (Connie) Pals of Scottsdale,
Arizona; five nieces; and two nephews.

Herman Beek
May 18, 2010
Herman D. Beek, Jr., 76, of Belmond, died on Monday, May 10,
2010, at the Belmond Medical Center.
A private memorial service
was held. Burial was in the Amsterdam cemetery near Goodell.
Arrangements were handled by the Dugger Funeral Home.
Herman Donald Jr., the son of Herman and Cora Van Osten Beek,
was born on December 26, 1933 in Hancock County. He
graduated from the Goodell High School. Herman held several
jobs during his working life. He started out as a farmhand,
then worked in construction and later moved to Winnebago
Industries. He worked for several seed companies: Tomco,
Acco, Paymaster and Cargill. Herman last worked for North
Iowa Woods before retiring.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother,
Henry.
Herman is survived by a sister, Linda; and brothers, John
and Larry, all of Belmond.

Lola Schulte
May 25, 2010
Lola E. Schulte, age 78, of Belmond and Alexander, died on
Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center of
Belmond.
Memorial services were
held on Friday, May 21, at the First Reformed Church in
Alexander. A private family burial was in the Alexander
Cemetery.
Lola Ellen, was born on December 22, 1931 on a farm in
Franklin County, to Tom Oscar Markwardt and Margaret Ellen
Nicholson. She attended country school in Richland Township
and high school in Alexander, graduating in 1949. She
married Calvin Schulte on January 15, 1950. Calvin and Lola
farmed in rural Alexander and were blessed with three
children. Lola loved her family and cherished her role as
wife and mother.
She took pleasure in
gardening, cooking and traveling. Upon retirement, the
couple spent summers on the farm and winters in Mesa,
Arizona. Fishing trips to Canada, as a couple or with good
friends, were favorite times. She was a member of the First
Reformed Church and the Reformed Church Women. Lola's walk
of faith was exemplified in her life. In 2009, she and
Calvin moved to the Belle Haven Apartments in Belmond.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ina (Laurell)
Burger; two infant brothers; daughter, Barbara Lynn Peil in
1996; and sister-in-law, Arlene (Merlin) Bier.
She is survived by her husband; son, Corwin (Carla) of
Alexander; daughter, Nancy (Tim) Green of Columbus, Ohio;
grandsons, Adam, Sean and Ian Green of Columbus, Rob (Cindy)
Peil of Coulter and Jeff Peil of Johnston; great-grandsons,
Evan and Camden Peil of Coulter; son-in-law, Loran Peil of
Alexander; and sister-in-law, Evelyn (Foster) Barkema of
Olathe, Kansas.

Owen Dale Van Buskirk, 87, of Osage, died on Saturday,
February 6, 2010, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health
Care Center.
Inurnment services will be
held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, June 2, at the Amsterdam
Cemetery near Goodell, with Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating.

Tena
Sandry

Tena F. Sandry, 95, a longtime resident of rural Goodell,
died on Monday, May 24, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Center
of Belmond.
A private funeral service
was held on Friday, at the Andrews Funeral Home, with burial
in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell, with Rev. Paddy
Druhl of the Goodell United Methodist Church officiating.
Tena Florence, the daughter of Klaas and Maggie (Harms)
Gruis, was born on May 21, 1915, on her parent's farm near
Meservey. Tena attended rural schools in the Meservey area
before taking on responsibilities on the family farm. Tena
married William B. Sandry on May 31, 1932. They had three
sons and a daughter. The couple farmed and raised their
children near Goodell. In addition to being a homemaker,
wife and mother, Tena had worked for a time at Acco Seeds,
sorting corn and detasseling. On the farm she helped with
the dairy operation and raising hogs, chickens and crops.
Tena was an excellent cook
and baker. Her children fondly remember her homemade rhubarb
and sour cream and raisin pies, along with her carrot cake
and kringla. Tena enjoyed get togethers with her many lady
friends, an occasional outing with her husband and kids to
area county fairs, bingo, reading nearly anything she could
get her hands on and doing crossword puzzles.
After becoming a resident of the Rehabilitation Center, she
enjoyed activities including Jokereno and bingo, and time
spent visiting with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sisters, Margaret,
Minnie, Karry and Anna; and brothers, Ernest, Jake and
Harm.
Survivors including her sons, Donald Sandry of Goodell,
Calvin (Lorene) Sandry and their children, William (Deb)
Sandry of Blue Grass, Dale (Karen) Sandry of Orange City,
Florida and Debbie (Rick) Rette of Lakeville, Minnesota
and Marvin Sandy of Britt and his son, Michael Sandry of
Thornton; her daughter, Sharon Sandry of Belmond; her
great-grandchildren, Aaron, Becca, Amy, Lee, Chris, Eric,
Rachael, Jacob and Angelica; and great-great-grandchildren,
Jordan and Carly.

Linda Manasco
June 8, 2010
Linda Lerdal Manasco, of Great Falls, Montana, died on
Sunday, May 30, 2010, of lung cancer.
She was born on August 12,
1955 in Clarion, and was raised in Belmond. She married
Glenn Manasco in 1986 in Dallas, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2002; and her
mother, Shirley Lerdal.
Survivors include her father, Kenneth Lerdal of Harlingen,
Texas; daughter, Jennifer Manasco of Great Falls; sisters,
Janet Nellist and Judy Lerdal of Texas; and brothers, Terry,
Roger and Mike Lerdal of Thornton.
