Charles Butler

Charles "Chuck" M. Butler, 84, of Lake Cornelia, died on
Thursday, August 5, 2010, at Arbor Springs in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, August 9, at the Klemme United Methodist Church.
Burial, with military honors, was in the Ell Township
Cemetery, Klemme.
Chuck was born on September 13, 1925 in Humboldt County near
Livermore, the son of Luther W. and Maude (Humble) Butler.
He graduated from the Livermore High School in 1942. He
served in the United States Army during World War II and
attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Charles married
Virginia M. Davis at the Livermore United Methodist Church
on September 2, 1951. They farmed for a time in Livermore
and Bradgate before moving to a farm east of Klemme in 1955.
In addition to farming, Charles and Virginia owned and
operated an Oliver business and later started BMD in Klemme.
They operated the business until 1992, when Chuck retired as
president. His involvement continued until they sold BMD
(known today as A & I) in 1995.
Charles was an active supporter of the community. He had
served as mayor of Klemme, as a board member of the Klemme
School Board, as a fireman and helped with the Slippery Elm
Golf Course and Klemme Ag Days.
Chuck enjoyed hunting and dancing in earlier years. He and
Virginia enjoyed bowling and golfing and were longtime
members of the Slippery Elm Golf Course and the Clarmond
Country Club near Lake Cornelia. They took winter vacations
in Biloxi, Mississippi during January. Charles looked
forward to fishing excursions in Canada and spending time in
the presence of his children and grandchildren. He was a
member of the Klemme American Legion Post and also the
Garner VFW.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Colwell of Tulsa,
Oklahoma and Eva Lou Ferstl of Harriet, Arkansas.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Gwen of Clive, Maggie
(Mike) Gowin of Rochester, Minnesota and Becky (Ed) Lents of
Drexel, Missouri; grandchildren, Devon (Jamye) Mau, Danielle
(Conner) Sears, Dillon Mau, Chris (Raissa Byer) Gowin, Matt
Gowin, John (Jen) Gowin, Ann (Chris) Mattison and Jill Lents
and fiancée, James Howarts; great-grandchildren, Andrew,
Taylor and Cassidy Gowin, Dana and Spencer Mattison, DJ Mau
and Nico Sears; brothers, Ralph (Ruby) Butler of Arkansas
and James Butler of Washington, Iowa; and sister, Linda Bahr
of Livermore.

Wilma Korthas
August 24, 2010
Wilma Jean Korthas, 83, of Fort Dodge, died on Monday,
August 16, 2010, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice House.
Funeral services were held
at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, August 21, at the Trinity United
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steve Peters officiating.
Interment was in the Fort Dodge Memorial Park Cemetery. The
Bruce-Graham Funeral Home of Fort Dodge, was in charge of
the arrangements.
Wilma was born on July 2,
1927, the daughter of LeRoy and Anna (Pochop) Thomas in
Gregory, South Dakota. She graduated from high school in
Plainview, Nebraska and received a teaching certificate. She
taught in a one-room school in the Plainview vicinity. On
June 26, 1949, Wilma was united in marriage to Clarence
Allen Korthas in Plainview, Nebraska. They moved with Al's
work before settling in Belmond, Iowa in 1952. Wilma was a
homemaker while her children were young and worked for
Huddleston's clothing stores in Belmond. The family moved to
Fort Dodge in 1974. She worked at Diamonds Clothing Store
and later at the Fort Dodge Fort Museum. In 2009, Wilma
moved to the Heritage Apartments, Friendship Haven, where
she established many friendships.
Those thankful for having
shared in Wilma's life include her sons, Stanley (Mary) of
Brunsville, Iowa, Kent (Cathy) of Sedalia, Missouri and
Thomas of Belmond; daughters, Karen of Sioux City and Luann
Korthas-Kiesecker of De Pere, Wisconsin; grandchildren,
Matthew (Misty) Korthas, Benjamin Korthas, Chris Korthas,
Kylie Korthas, Kimberly Korthas, Jessica (Mike) Lane and
Nolan Kiesecker; great-grandchildren, Devon Korthas, Daxton
Korthas and Alexis Lane; step-grandchildren, Kelly Freeman
and Dustin Kiesecker; brothers, Lyle Thomas of Norfolk,
Nebraska and Leonard Thomas of Arnold, California; and
sister, Dorothy Pfund of Laguna Nigel, California.
Mrs. Korthas was preceded
in death by her husband, Al Korthas; her parents; two
brothers; and one grandson, Darwin Kiesecker.

Marilyn Duda
August 31, 2010
Marilyn L. Duda, 79, of Dows, died on Tuesday, August 17,
2010, at her sister’s home in Tucson, Arizona.
Marilyn Louise was born on
March 4, 1931 in Dows, to Hiram and Buenetta Vanderlip. She
graduated from the Dows High School in 1948. She married Dr.
Edward John Duda in 1955 in Iowa Falls. They lived most of
their lives in Fairfield, Connecticut. He died in 1979 and
Marilyn returned to Dows in 2001 to retire.
Survivors include her son,
Mark Duda; daughter, Sarah (Steve) Tassinari; and sister,
Madalyn (Jim) Richmann.

Maxine Letzring
August 31, 2010
Maxine Letzring, 93, of Latimer, died on Saturday, August
28, 2010, in Madison, Wisconsin.
Funeral services were held
on Wednesday, in Hampton and burial was in Sheffield.
Maxine was born on January
21, 1917 in Chapin, to George and Hazel Switzer Green. She
married Raymond Letzring and worked at the Latimer Post
Office.
She is survived by a son
in Wisconsin, a son in Ohio, and a daughter in Wisconsin.

Carol Marchant
August 31, 2010
Carol A. Marchant, 62, of Klemme, died on Saturday, August
28, at the hospital in Britt.
Funeral services will be
held on Friday, September 2, at 10:30 a.m., at the Immanuel
Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme. Burial will be
in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. Visitation will be
held on Thursday, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Andrews Funeral
Home in Klemme and continue one hour prior to the services
at church. Carol
Ann, the daughter of Caroline (Schwartz) and Kenneth
Kluckhohn, was born in Mason City on June 28, 1948. She grew
up in Klemme and was a lifelong resident. Carol married Lynn
Marchant in 1981 and they divorced in 1998. She held a
variety of jobs over the years.
Carol is survived by her daughter, Angie Kluckhohn of
Klemme; son, Jeff Marchant of Des Moines; and aunt, Jean
Schwartz of Belmond.

Effie Olson
Effie Olson, 96, of
Alexander died on Monday, August 30, 2010, at the
Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.
Funeral services were
held on Friday, September 3, in the Alexander cemetery
where she was buried.
Effie, the daughter of Henry and Gertie Modderman Bohman,
was born on November 9, 1913, on the family farm near
Alexander. She attended the Alexander Consolidated
School thru the tenth grade, at which time she began to
help on the farm. Effie married Arnie Olson of Meservey,
on June 12, 1935 and they had five children. They lived
on the family farm north of Alexander until 1948, whey
they moved to their farm northeast of Alexander. Arnie
died on March 19, 1997 and Effie continued to live on
the farm until October 2004, when she entered the
Rehabilitation Center. She enjoyed good health and took
part in all the activities until January 2010, when she
fell and broke her hip and was confined to a wheelchair.
Effie was preceded in death by her husband; brothers,
John Henry and Bernard George; sister-in-law, Norma
Bohman; sons-in-law, Jerry Moore and Earl DeMoss; and
infant grandsons, Alan Moore and Zachary Olson.
Effie is survived by her children, Gladys (Lowell)
Peterson of Altoona, Oliver (Eleanor) Olson of Port
Orange, Florida, Arleen DeMoss of Cedar Rapids, Edward
(Karen) Olson of Loveland, Colorado and Arlen (Bonnie)
Olson of Alexander; grandchildren, Carla Clark, Keith
(Rose) Peterson, Laurie (Jerry) Dietrich, Bill (Valerie)
DeMoss, Roxann (Owen) Evans and Travis Olson;
great-grandchildren, Matt Clark, Eric Peterson, Claire
Peterson, Bryce Evans, Abigail Evans and Keaton DeMoss;
and sister-in-law, Alberta Bohman.

Lillian Withers
Lillian R. Withers,
84, of Klemme, died on Monday, August 30, 2010, at the
Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.
A private service was
held on Thursday, September 2, at the Dugger Funeral
Home, with Pastor Donna Buckman officiating. Burial was
in the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme
Lillian Rose, the daughter of Arthur and Louisa Groh
Knoke, was born on March 20, 1926 in Klemme, where she
grew up and attended school. Lillian married Donald
Mourlam in 1945 and they had two sons. Donald died in
1954. Lillian married Faye Withers on October 23, 1956
and they had a daughter. Lillian worked as home-maker
and mother while her children were young. Later she
worked for Winnebago in Forest City, and then was
custodian at the Klemme School until 1999. She was a
member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in
Klemme.
Lillian is remembered for her love of crochet and
handy-work. Her family and friends recall her cooking.
She loved to see everyone enjoying a good meal or
dessert. Lillian also enjoyed gardening, picking
berries, watching the birds and shopping at Aldi.
Lillian was warmly loved as a mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother and school custodian.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don;
husband, Faye in 1982; twin children, Henry and Martha;
and sister, Esther Kaduce.
Lillian is survived by her children, Don (Sue) Mourlam
of Belmond, Robert Mourlam of Belmond and Kathy (Jeff)
Scott of Phillipsburg, Missouri; grandchildren,
Nathaniel (Anna) Lindley, Matthew Lindley, Bob (Anne)
Mourlam, Jenny Mourlam and Dan (Katie) Mourlam;
great-grandchildren, Hayden, Hunter, Harley, Holden,
Emily, Ethan and Henry; and brother, Arthur (Doris)
Knoke of Phoenix, Arizona.

Betty Hegg-Payne
Betty J. Hegg-Payne,
87, formerly of Kanawha, died on Monday, August 30,
2010, in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Funeral services were
held on Tuesday, September 7, at the Kanawha Lutheran
Church. A private family burial will be in the Concord
Cemetery in Garner. Memorials may be directed to the
American Heart Association.
Betty Jean, the daughter of William and Helen Brummund,
was born on February 5, 1923. She graduated from the
Kanawha High School in 1940. On November 22, 1941, she
married Merle Hegg at her parent’s home near Kanawha.
They had four children. Merle died on July 11, 1978. She
married Jim Payne on April 2, 1983. Jim died July 26,
1989.
Betty and Merle raised their family in Kanawha. When
Merle retired they moved to Garner. In Kanawha, Betty
worked at the Strahorn Hardware, Kanawha Schools and
Krietlow Electric. She later worked at the courthouse in
Garner. She moved to Fort Collins in 1999 to be near her
son and daughter.
She was a life member of the American Legion and VFW
Auxiliaries. She especially enjoyed her family, dancing,
playing cards, baking, traveling, picnicking, sewing,
crafting and reading. Betty had made herself the
“Sunshine Lady” by sending greeting cards to anyone she
met. Many people remembered their own anniversaries only
because Betty had sent a card.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husbands;
sister, Florence; brother, Bill; and granddaughter, Angi
Hegg Bronemann.
Betty is survived by her children, Bob (Barb) of Fort
Collins, Ruth Mosher of Fort Collins, Jim (Judy) of
Shell Rock and Mary (Richard) of Sandusky, Iowa;
stepsons, Loren (Marianne) Payne of Belmond and Allen
Payne of Seattle, Washington; grandchildren, Jamie (Ty)
Drage, Carie (Jordan) Aslor, Shawn Mosher, Jeff (Misty)
Mosher, Brian (Holly) Hegg, Kristy (Michael) Baker and
Mark (Kathryn) Bevington; step-grandchildren, Lonnie
Payne of Des Moines and LeAnn (Daniel) Tindall of Akron;
15 great-grandchildren; and three
step-great-grandchildren.
