Center in Ames.

Army for two years, attaining the rank of sergeant. Part of

for nearly 38 years, spending two years operating a
mechanic's shop in Eldon, Missouri, following their marriage
before becoming the owner of Keeling's Auto Repair in
Belmond. He had also worked for a time for Wright County.

plumbing, wiring, and a variety of other handyman tasks. He
was always willing to drop what he was doing to help others.

Belmond-Klemme High School job shadow program, teaching the
skills and knowledge of his trade.
Foremost in Verlyn's life were times spent with his wife,
sons and their families. He cherished each and every
opportunity to be with his grandchildren. He loved to watch
Robby in snow cross races and the boys' other activities. He
spent time square dancing and raising wild flowers in
"Keeling Park" at his home.
Verlyn loved hunting pheasants, deer and other game with his
family and friends, using a gun or his compound bow. His
favorite past time was fishing. He looked forward to
excursions to Canada, Minnesota, Wisconsin, river fishing in
Chamberlain, South Dakota, salmon fishing in Lake Michigan
and trout fishing in northeast Iowa. He looked forward to
hours of friendly, yet competitive games of 500 and other
card games. Verlyn was always a people person and loved to
host gatherings of friends and family. Friends would stop by
his shop for pizza, pies, biscuits and other cuisine on his
famous grill. He enjoyed auto racing, and Saturday he was at
the track in Newton with his sons. He and Joyce and had just
returned Friday from an Alaskan cruise.

Barbara Watne
August 25, 2009
Barbara E. Watne, 62, of Belmond, died of cancer on
Saturday, August 22, 2009, at the Rehabilitation Center of
Belmond, surrounded by her family.
Services were held on
Tuesday, August 25, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with
Rev. Troy Pflibsen officiating assisted by Stan Watne.
Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Barbara Ellen, was born on July 13, 1947 in Belmond, to
Stanley and Beulah (Trott) Ahlstrom. She was baptized in
Hyattsville, Maryland in December 1947. After graduating
from the Belmond High School in 1965 and Hamilton Business
College in 1966, she worked for Leland Jenison, Consulting
Engineer for two years. In the earlier years of her life
Barb was an active member of the E.U.B. (Methodist) Church
in Goodell as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher.
On September 22, 1968, she married Ted Watne at the Goodell
United Methodist Church. She transferred her membership to
the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, where she was
involved with WELCA. She was also involved in the Belmond
VFW Auxiliary, the Goodell American Legion Auxiliary and the
Belmond Community Service Women. She held the treasurer
position in many of these organizations as her bookkeeping
skills were impeccable.
Barb was a Tupperware representative, a stay at home mom and
then worked at True Value in Belmond for over 25 years
before illness forced her to retire. She enjoyed road trips
with Ted, their children and grandchildren; going to work
every day at True Value; bus trips with her friends; and
trips to Florida, Georgia, the East Coast to visit family,
and her Alaskan cruise. Barb looked forward to any
opportunity for a shopping excursion, and if the outing
included the grandchildren, they would definitely have to
include a stop at Mc Donald's.
Many knew Barb as a giver and not a taker. She always
worried that her family was happy and did whatever it took
to make that happen. She gave from her heart and never
expected anything in return. During her illness it was hard
for her to become the receiver. Barb never wanted to be the
center of attention. A woman of strength and faith, she was
the glue that kept the family together. Saturday afternoon
family dinners, her baking treats (especially Kringla),
bargain shopping, unbelievable memory, strong-hearted
compassion, perseverance and positive attitude are the
things that will never be forgotten by her family and
friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her
mother-in-law and father-in-law, John and Evelyn (Case)
Watne.
She is survived by her husband, Ted; sons, Troy (Heidi) and
Lance (Melysa); grandchildren, Cody, Paige, Brandon, Kyle
and Kendra; and sister, Sonja (Brett) Lobdell, all of
Belmond; sisters-in law, Marcia (Earl) Kolbeck of Ashton,
Susan (Leland) Halfpop of Goodell, Phoebe (Charles) Soma of
Belmond and Norma (Jerry) McNertney of Nevada;
brothers-in-law, Jon Watne of Clarion and Craig (Connie)
Watne of Belmond.
