Leslie Dokken

Leslie Dokken, 72, of rural Kensett, died on Wednesday,
April 4, 2007, at his home.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, April
7, 2007, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett, with
Reverend Tom Martin officiating. Burial was in the Elk Creek
Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation was from 5-7:00 p.m.,
on Friday, at the Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood. Visitation was also held one hour prior to
service time on Saturday at the church.
Leslie Dokken, was born on October 1, 1934 in rural Kensett,
the son of George and Wannie (Elam) Dokken. He attended the
rural Brookfield Township #7 School, and graduated from the
Kensett High School in 1952. Leslie worked at the Sugar Beet
Plant in Mason City, and also worked for the Iowa Department
of Transportation in the road maintenance department for 21
years until his retirement. He was united in marriage to
Donna Cockram on August 19, 1972, at the Zion-St. John
Lutheran Church in Sheffield.
Leslie enjoyed puttering around the garage, working on his
cars, John Deere tractors, fishing, playing 500 cards, and
socializing with family and friends.
He was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, was
custodian at the church for many years, and was on the
church council.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Donna Dokken of
rural Kensett; nine brothers and sisters, Mary (Merle)
Klinge of Clear Lake, Hazel Erickson of Austin, Minnesota,
James (Arlis) Dokken of Alexandria, Minnesota, Truman
(Donna) Dokken of Blue Eye, Missouri, Donald (LaVonne)
Dokken of Austin, Minnesota, Wilford (Karen) Dokken of
Alden, Minnesota, Rueben Dokken of Alexandria, Minnesota,
George (Vicky) Dokken of Kensett and Juanita (Dutch)
Bollinger of Alexandria, Minnesota; several nieces and
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
His parents; and a brother and sister who died in infancy,
Sam and Barbara Dokken, preceded him in death.

Lincoln Nesset
April 18, 2007
Lincoln W. Nesset, 78, died on Saturday, April 7, 2007, at
the St. Petersburg General Hospital in St. Petersburg,
Florida.
He was born in Gordonsville, Minnesota. He lived in
Northwood, Iowa, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Albert Lea,
Minnesota and Los Angeles, California. At the age of 17 he
enlisted in the U.S. Navy, spending time in Arabia,
Afghanistan and many other countries. He returned to finish
his education and graduate from the Northwood High School in
1950.
Lincoln was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of the
VFW, American Legion and the First Lutheran Church. One of
his first jobs was as a theater projection operator and as a
teenager he enlisted in the Civil Air Patrol. He worked as a
crew chief surveyor in Worth County and as chief gardener at
the Curtis Hotel in Minneapolis. One of his first loves was
music. He was a leader and drummer of The Convertibles, a
very successful band that traveled all over the United
States.
Lincoln is survived by his beloved daughter, Tanyier Malai
Joan Prechl and other children; his caregiver, Victoria
Cossette; his sister’s, Bette Perkins and Kathryn Olson; and
other beloved family members.
He was preceded in death by first born sister, Ardis Elaine
who died at birth; mother, Olga C. Sanvold Nesset and
father, John T. Nesset; sister, Lorraine Touberg of Austin,
Minnesota; brother, Orville Nesset of Glenville, Minnesota;
and sister, Beverly Kral of Faribault, Minnesota.
Lincoln will be sadly missed by family and
friends. Lincoln’s remains will be interned at Fort Snelling,
St. Paul, sometime in August.

Mabel Severson

Mabel Marie (Ellingson) Severson, 87, of Northwood, died on
Easter Sunday, April 8, 2007, at the Lutheran Retirement
Home in Northwood.
Funeral services was held at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, April
11, at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Reverend
Barbara Wills officiating. Burial was in the South Shell
Rock Cemetery, rural Northwood. Visitation was from 5-7:00
p.m., on Tuesday, April 10, at the Conner Colonial Chapel,
Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to
service time on Wednesday, at the church.
The family of Mabel Marie Severson has requested that
memorial contributions be made to the South Shell Rock
Cemetery Association, or to the First Lutheran Church Hymnal
Fund in her memory.
Mabel Marie (Ellingson) Severson, was born on September 18,
1919 in Silver Lake Township, rural Northwood, Iowa, the
daughter of Ole E. and Anna (Benson) Ellingson. She was
baptized at the Bristol Lutheran Church, and reaffirmed the
faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Sion
Lutheran Church, all west of Northwood. She attended and
received her education in the Northwood Community Schools,
graduating from the Northwood High School in 1938.
She was united in marriage to Leighton Severson, Sr., on
December 31, 1938 in Gordonsville, Minnesota at her parents
home. He preceded her in death on December 8, 1999. After
their marriage they lived west of Northwood until they moved
to town.
Mabel worked on the family farm and then at Fallgatters
Market in Northwood for many years. When they moved to
Northwood, she worked at the Lutheran Retirement Home as a
CNA, and baked bread, lefse and cookies for J & D Market and
many families in the area. In her retirement years, she
helped her husband mow two-cemetery lawns State Line
Cemetery and South Shell Rock Cemetery. On September 4,
1999, she became a resident of the Lutheran Retirement Home
in Northwood.
She enjoyed gardening, flowers, baking, and sewing, but her
great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.
She was active in the First Lutheran Church, serving as FLW
President during the building of our present church. She was
girl's 4-H Leader for many years. She was a member of the
Green Thumb Garden Club in Northwood winning many awards for
her arrangements and also the Kensett Friendship Garden
Club, until she could no longer participate.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Myra (Lonnie)
Harris of Northwood, Judith Johnson of Stewartville,
Minnesota and Clair (Linda) Severson of Hastings, Minnesota;
a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Severson of Northwood; 11
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nine
step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren;
and three step-great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Alvin
(Claire) Ellingson of Lake Wiley, South Carolina; and a
sister-in-law, Lila Ellingson of Glenville, Minnesota; as
well as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ole and Anna
Ellingson; husband, Leighton; their son, Lee; and a brother,
Kenneth Ellingson.

Robert Arrett
April 18, 2007
Robert Arrett, age 65, of Northwood, died on Thursday, April
12, 2007, at his home in rural Northwood.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, April
l6, at the Northwood United Methodist Church, Northwood,
Iowa, with Rev. Wendi Gillan officiating. Burial took place
at the State Line Cemetery, rural Northwood. The family
greeted friends from 4-7:00 p.m., on Sunday, at the
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South, Northwood,
and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
Robert Arrett, was born on May l, 1941, to Lawrence and
Evalyn (Barber) Arrett in Freeborn County, Minnesota. He was
baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in
Gordonsville, Minnesota. He attended rural school in
Minnesota and Iowa. He was united in marriage to Jean Nelson
at Hutchinson, Minnesota, on January 5, l963. They farmed
their entire married life in rural Northwood, Iowa.
Robert loved the outdoors, farming with his father and
grandson, camping with friends and family, taking family
vacations, fishing and snowmobiling and the good old days of
playing cards at Gertie's. He loved to spend time with his
grandchildren and tell stories about his days growing up.
Robert is survived by his wife, Jean Arrett and mother,
Evalyn Arrett of Northwood; two daughters, Teresa Stehn and
husband, Rod of Northwood and Mary Branstad and husband,
Brian of Kensett; seven grandchildren, Danielle and Rachel
Taylor, Cassidy Stehn, Josh and Michael Walker, AJ and Brody
Branstad; two sisters, Karen Hove and husband, Chuck and
Lois Patterson and husband, Richard, both of Northwood; two
brothers, Donald Arrett and wife, Debbie of Glenville,
Minnesota and James Arrett and wife, Sharon of Independence,
Missouri; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Arrett;
father and mother-in-law, Vernon and Louise Nelson; and
nephew, Todd Hove.
The Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, Iowa handled
the funeral arrangements.

Laurel "Buzz"
Gordon

Laurel "Buzz" Gordon, 76,
of rural Northwood, died on Monday, April l6, 2007, at the
Mercy Hospital–North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, April
20, 2007, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church near Carpenter,
with Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial was in the St.
Ansgar Cemetery in St. Ansgar. Visitation was held from
4-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral
Home, Northwood.
Laurel Gordon, was born on March l, 1931 in rural Northwood,
the son of M. Luellyn and Ada (Pike) Gordon. He attended
the Otranto public schools. Laurel worked for Christian and
Pete Hanson for a few years. He also drove truck for Wallace
Coleman and LR Falk. Laurel served his country during the
Korean War. He joined the army and was sent overseas, where
he faced active combat in Korea.
He was united in marriage to Beverly Thistlethwaite Lee on
November 11, 1960, at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua. Laurel later adopted her son, Kenneth.
After his marriage he farmed for himself for the rest of his
life. He also drove trucks in later years instead of milking
cows. Throughout his life he enjoyed visiting with people
and helping them whenever he could. He loved driving on the
road.
He was a life long member of the Deer Creek Lutheran
Church, Carpenter.
Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Vernon Gordon
and wife. Agnes of Northwood; sister-in-laws, Jean Langbehn
of Rochester, Betty Hinders of Albert Lea and Nancy
Scholljigerdes of Owatonna; several nieces and nephews,
other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy
(stillborn); his wife; son; mother-in-law; a sister-in-law;
and a brother in law.

Adrianne Gibbs
May 2, 2007
Adrianne Johanna Gibbs, 70, of Lebanon, Oregon, died on
Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at the Samaritan Lebanon
Community Hospital.
She was born in Kensett, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Amy
(Hove) Van Sabben. Adrianne graduated in 1955 from the
Northwood High School in Iowa, and then entered the U.S.
Navy.
While serving in the Navy, she met Leland Gibbs. Following
her discharge in 1957, they married on September 12, 1957 in
Bentonville, Arkansas. The couple lived in Kansas and
Missouri from 1957 to 1964, then they moved to Lebanon. In
Lebanon, they owned and operated Gibbs Furniture for 28
years, and Adrianne worked for the Linn County Sheriff's
Office as a records clerk until 1996. Later that year, she
had open heart surgery and a major stroke.
She was active in her sons' school activities while they
were young and loved life up to the end.
She is survived by her husband, Leland of Lebanon; sons,
Ronald, Dennis and Dean, all of Lebanon; brother, Jon Van
Sabben and sisters, Rosie Broderson and Bonnie Smith, all of
Iowa; grandchildren, Jennifer, Joshua, Jamie, Amber, Matthew
and Lyle; and great-grandson, Lucas.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Anne Van
Sabben and brother, Phillip Van Sabben; and her parents.

Jerry Colby
April 25, 2007
Jerry Lee Colby, 40, of Northwood, died on Friday, April 20,
2007, from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday,
April 26, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, with
Reverend Wendi Abrahamson, of the St. John’s Episcopal
Church, Mason City, officiating. Inurnment will be in the
Kensett Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to
the service on Thursday.
Jerry Lee Colby, was born on October 2, 1966 in Sioux City,
Iowa, the son of David and Darlene (Plante) Colby. He
graduated from the Mason City High School. Jerry was united
in marriage to Connie Grimm and to this union two daughters
were born. Jerry was currently working at Woodharbor, in
Northwood.
He enjoyed a simple life with the things he loved the most,
his family, friends, and his motorcycle. Jerry also enjoyed
bowling and fishing with the two girls.
Jerry is survived by his father, David Colby of Manly;
significant other, Cheryl Cooper of Northwood; daughters,
Danielle Colby and Megan Colby; step-sons, Alan Cooper and
Mitchell Rainey, all of Northwood; sister, Jeanette Smith of
Northwood; brother, Jeffery Colby of Fernandina Beach,
Florida; soon to be granddaughter, Madylyn Marie; two
nieces; four nephews; three great-nephews; along with
several aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, Darlene Colby;
son, Specialist First Class Dustin Colby; grandparents,
Wallace Plante, Stella and Frank Oppman, Charles and Bernice
Colby.
