Edna Mae Tietz

Edna Mae Tietz,
91, of Manly, died on Wednesday,
May 1, 2002, at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, at the
Bethel United Methodist Church,
Manly, with the Rev. Robert
Cumings officiating. Interment
was in the Manly Cemetery.
Edna was born on
March 15, 1911 in Cerro Gordo
County, the daughter of William
Aaron and Bertha (Cookman)
Gallion. She graduated from the
Manly High School in 1928 and
attended Mason City Junior
College for one year. Edna
taught in the rural schools for
four years before her marriage
to Richard Tietz on February 1,
1933, at her family's home in
Manly. They farmed west of Manly
before moving into town where
Edna was a homemaker. She also
worked as a cook at the Highway
Café in Manly for
six-and-one-half years.
Edna was a member
of the Bethel United Methodist
Church and a former member of
the Evangelical and Reformed
Churches, where she was a
pianist for many years. She was
a member of the Women's Farm
Bureau, the Camera Club, the
Friendship Circle, the Manly
Senior Citizens Center, Manly
Garden Club, Manly Study Club
and she was a 4-H Leader for
over 40 years.
She enjoyed
sewing, embroidering, latchhook,
ceramics, gardening, candle
wicking, reading and had a great
interest in music.
Survivors include
five daughters and their
spouses, Laura Mae and Robert
Roffman of Postville, Iowa, Rose
Marie and Dale Lamprecht of
Charles City, Darlene and LeRoy
Weitzel of Mason City, Janice
and Richard Cooper of Nora
Springs and Linda Ann and Leland
Lutzke of Big Lake, Minnessota;
19 grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren; one sister,
Violet Vansteenburg of Manly;
two sisters-in-law, Helen
Hartman of St. Ansgar and Nina
Tietz of Griswold, Iowa; one
brother-in-law, Barton
Vansteenburg of Battle Lake,
Minnesota; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; her
husband, Richard; an infant twin
son, Loren Richard Tietz; one
brother, Roy; and three sisters,
Lucille, Mildred, and Hazel.

Derwin "Dewey" Sigurd Dahl

Derwin
"Dewey" Sigurd Dahl, 84, of
Glenville, Minnesota, formerly
of Northwood, died on Monday,
May 6, 2002, at the St. Mary's
Hospital in Rochester,
Minnesota.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, at the
First Lutheran Church,
Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer
and Rev. Allan Stoa officiating.
Burial was in the Kensett
Cemetery. The family of Derwin
"Dewey" Dahl has requested that
memorial contributions be made
to the First Lutheran Church in
Northwood, Kensett Cemetery or
to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church
in Manly, in his memory. The
Conner Colonial Chapel of
Northwood was in charge of the
arrangements.
Derwin "Dewey"
Sigurd Dahl, was born on March
10, 1918 in Decorah, Iowa, the
son of Dr. Sigurd and Imo
(Zachery) Dahl. He was baptized
and confirmed in the Lutheran
faith and attended and received
his education in the Manly
school System. He married Dora
Geneva Loland on July 20, 1941
in LeCenter, Minnesota. She
preceded him in death on August
12, 1996. Dewey farmed all his
life in the Manly area, before
moving to Northwood in 1989, and
in 1998, moved to Glenville,
Minnesota. He married Lila
Ellingson on November 11, 2000,
at the First Lutheran Church in
Northwood.
Dewey enjoyed
fishing, camping, traveling,
wintering in Phoenix, Mesa, and
Apache Junction, Arizona since
1981, playing cards, dancing,
and visiting, with his many
friends at the coffee shop, and
the senior citizens center.
He was a member
of the First Lutheran Church in
Northwood, former member of the
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Manly, Isaac Walton League in
Kensett, Eagles Club in Albert
Lea, Glenville Senior Citizen
Center and the Stateline
Stinkers and Riverside
Neighborhood Club both in
Glenville.
Left to cherish
his memory is his wife, Lila
Dahl of Glenville; three
children, Donavon Dahl and his
wife, Janey of Phoenix, Arizona,
LaVern Dahl and his wife, Tanya
of Mason City and Imogene

Steven P. McArthur

Steven P.
McArthur, 53, of Kensett,
formerly of Mason City, died on
Thursday, May 9, 2002, at the
St. Mary's Hospital in
Rochester, Minnesota.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, at the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Manly, with Rev. David Kucera
officiating. Burial was in the
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason
City.
Steven P.
McArthur, was born on November
28, 1948 in Mason City, the son
of Dan and Marcia (Pacey)
McArthur. He attended and
received his education in the
Mason City Public Schools,
graduating from the Mason City
High School. Steven also
attended a college in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin and N.I.A.C.C. in
Mason City, receiving his
certificate in Mechanical
Drafting. Steven worked on his
parents farm for many years in
rural Mason City, feeding
livestock, and raising register
Herefords, which he enjoyed
showing at county and state
fairs.
He married Deb
(Brennan) Aves on April 5, 1997,
at the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Manly. In the last
five years Steven worked for
Winnebago Industries in Forest
City as a framer.
He enjoyed being
involved in 4-H, boating,
water-skiing, fishing, hunting
elk, fox and pheasants, and also
enjoyed flying single engine
aircraft with his father.

Joyce Louise Hackbart

Joyce Louise
Hackbart, 72, of Manly, died on
Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at the
Manly Nursing & Rehab Center.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, at the
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Manly, with Rev. Randy Nielsen
and Rev. Rose Marie Nack
officiating. Burial was in the
Grafton Cemetery.
Joyce Louise
Hackbart, was born on May 6,
1930 in Republic, Kansas, the
daughter of George and Pearl
(Stradley) Nitcher. She was
baptized and reaffirmed the
faith of her baptism through
confirmation at the Emmanuel
Lutheran Church in Grafton and
received her elementary
education in the Otranto
Community School System and also
attended the Grafton High
School, before receiving her GED
in 1978.
She married Elroy
August Hackbart on July 13,
1947, at the Emmanuel Lutheran
Church in Grafton. He preceded
her in death on November 28,
1991. Joyce was a secretary and
bookkeeper for various
businesses for several years in
the north Iowa area. Joyce also
taught cake decorating at
N.I.A.C.C. in Mason City.
She enjoyed
cooking, baking, dancing, cake
decorating, listening to music,
knitting, crocheting, quilting,
arts and crafts, rosemalling,
calligraphy, collecting dolls,
plates, and souvenir spoons, but
her great love and enjoyment was
her family and friends. She was
a member of the Bethlehem
Lutheran Church in Manly.
Left to cherish
her memory is her mother, Pearl
Nitcher of Manly; a daughter,
Sharon Badenschier and her
husband, Chuck of Rochester,
Minnesota; three sons, Marvin
Hackbart and his wife, Pat of
Mason City, Kenneth Hackbart and
his wife, Kathy of Mason City
and Howard Hackbart and his
wife, Joyce Ann of Grafton; nine
grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; a sister,
Maxine Kruger and her husband,
Ed of Grafton; and two brothers,
George Nitcher and his wife,
Cordelia of Council Bluffs and
Ken Nitcher and his wife, Sandra
of Northwood; as well as other
relatives and many friends.
Besides her

Evelyn M. Kos

Evelyn M. Kos, 87, of Northwood,
formerly of Myrtle, died on
Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at the
Lutheran retirement Home in
Northwood.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, at the
Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Chapel.
Rev. Daniel Baker officiated.
Interment was in the Oakwood
Cemetery in Austin.
Evelyn Myrtle
Kos, was born on July 4, 1914,
to Arthur Joseph and Frances
(Cafourek) Baley in London
Township. She was baptized at
the First Methodist Church in
Austin and attended the Benesh
and Myrtle Schools. Evelyn was a
member of the ZCBJ Lodge #38 in
Austin, the Mother's Club and
the Neighborhood Birthday Club.
She was one of the organizers of
the Myrtle Museum. Evelyn liked
gardening and baking kolaches.
Survivors include
children, Ron Kos of Austin,
Fran Nelson of Northwood and
Wayne Kos and his wife, Barb of
Lutsen; four grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren;
sister, Georgia Oxley of Austin;
brothers, Archie Baley and his
wife, Mildred of Austin and
Robert Baley and his wife, Donna
of Glenville; and nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; her
husband, Charles; her
son-in-law, Dale Nelson; three
brothers in infancy; and three
grandchildren.

Dale Virgil Hrubetz
May 21, 2002
Dale
Virgil Hrubetz, 68, of Manly,
died on Saturday, May 18, 2002,
at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, at the
Bethany Lutheran Church in
Kensett, with Rev. Selmer G.
"Sam" Hernes officiating. Burial
was in the Kensett Cemetery,
with military graveside honors
by the Edward Tosel American
Legion Post #110 of Manly.
Dale Virgil
Hrubetz, was born on July 8,
1933 in Kensett, the son of
Edward and Nina (Helgeson)
Hrubetz. He attended and
received his education in the
Kensett School System. After
completing his schooling he
worked at the Manly Creamery
before entering the service.
Dale was inducted into the U.S.
Army at Ft. Des Moines on
February 16, 1956 and served
with the 6th Infantry Regiment,
behind the Iron Curtain during
the Berlin Crises and was
appointed a Guardian of the
Outpost of Democracy. He was
honorably discharged as a
Specialist 3 at Ft. Sheridan,
Illinois on February 3, 1958.
After his honorable discharge he
came back to Manly and continued
working at the Manly Creamery
and farmed in the Manly area.
Dale also worked for the Armour
Meat Packing Company in Mason
City for 30 years until his
retirement. He married Sharon
Hagen on February 13, 1960 in
Manly. He was a member of the
Edward Tosel American Legion
Post #110 in Manly.
Left to cherish
his memory are his children,
Sheryl Madson of Northwood,
Steve Hrubetz of Manly and his
special friend, Chris of Mason
City, Sandy Grandgenett and her
husband, Kevin of Mason City and
Stan Hrubetz and his wife, Teri

John Nauss, 17,
died on Sunday, May 19, 2002.
Funeral services
were held on Thursday, at the
Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason
City, with interment in the
Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev.
Robert Dodge officiated.
John was born on
March 27, 1985 in Estherville,
Iowa, the son of Steve and Julie
(Wescott) Nauss. His family
later moved to Algona before
making their home in Mason City.
He was currently a sophomore at
the Mason City High School. His
favorite subject in school was
math. He enjoyed playing the
guitar, rollerblading, playing
frisbee golf and playing
hackysack.
Survivors include
his father, Steve Nauss and
wife, Cheryl of Britt; mother,
Julie Nauss of Mason City;
brother, Greg Nauss of Mason
City; two sisters, Jessica
Gutierrez of Mason City and
Stephanie Nauss of Britt;
step-brother, Jared Peterson and
family of Corwith; step-sister,
Beth Peterson of Nora Springs;
maternal grandmother, Marjorie
Wescott of Mason City; paternal
grandparents, Jerry and Sherry
Nauss of Estherville; paternal

Harriett A.
Anderson, 73, died on Monday,
May 20, 2002, in Jacksonville,
Florida.
Funeral services
were held on Thursday, at the
Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran
Church, Jacksonville, Florida,
with burial in the Warren G.
Smith Cemetery.
Harriett was born
on May 5, 1929 in Steele County,
Minnesota, the daughter of
Henrietta C. and Frank E. Adams.
She attended Northwood Public
Schools and graduated from the
Northwood High School in 1946.
Since 1990 she has enjoyed a
summer residence in the
mountains of Graham County,
North Carolina.
Survivors include
her husband, Meri "Andy"
Anderson; children, Rev. Frank
W. (Mary) Anderson of Evanston,
Illinois and Marla M. Anderson
(Alan Aptheker) of Jacksonville;
four granddaughters; sisters,
Frances Guertin, Delores Marsh,
Arlene Adams, Gloria Helgeson
and Marilyn Lagios; brothers,
Frank Jr. and Albert Adams;
aunt, Edith Adams Abrahams; and
many relatives in the Northwood
area.
She was preceded
in death by two children, Ila R.

Ivy Jeanette Ellingson

Ivy Jeanette
Ellingson, 95, of Beaverton,
Oregon, died on Monday, May 27,
2002, at a local care facility.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, at the
Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home,
Hillsboro, Oregon. Private
family graveside services
followed in the Fir Lawn
Cemetery.
Ivy was born on
August 2, 1906 in Northwood, the
middle of five children born to
John and Iva Jeanette (Nelsen)
Berg. She was raised and
schooled in Northwood.
On October 29,
1921, she married Edwin C.
Ellingson. He preceded her in
death on May 27, 1985. Shortly
after they were married, the
Ellingson's moved to St. Paul,
Minnesota, where they lived
until moving to Spokane,
Washington in 1945, where they
were the founding members of the
Green Acres Lutheran Church. A
self-taught pianist and
organist, she provided the music
for the church. She was also a
member of the Green Acres
Women's Club and a lifelong
member of Degree of Honor, which
she joined in St. Paul.
They lived in
Oregon and eastern Washington
for a number of years prior to
their move to Beaverton, Oregon
in 1965.
Longtime members
of Hillsboro's Trinity Lutheran
Church, she was active in the
Lutheran Women's Missionary
League, as well as other aspects
of the church. She enjoyed
sewing and made nearly
everything that she wore. She
also liked gardening and was an
avid reader who read her Bible
through many times. In recent
years, she was involved with her
grandchildren and all of their
activities.
Survivors include
a daughter, Cynthia and her
husband, Harold Anderson of
Hillsboro; four sons, James
Ellingson of Portland, Oregon,
Gerald Ellingson and his wife,
Gwen Knox of Beaverton, Oregon,
Eric Ellingson of Hillsboro,
Oregon and Larry and his wife,
Pamela Ellingson of Portland,
Oregon; nine grandchildren; and
five great-grandchildren.

Myrtle Ella Buechele

Myrtle
Ella Buechele, of Grafton, died
on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at
the Manly Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center.
A funeral service
was held on Saturday, at the
Emmanuel Lutheran Church,
Grafton, with Rev. Wayne
Ellingson officiating. Interment
was in the Grafton Cemetery.
Myrtle was born
on April 5, 1908 in Grafton, the
daughter of Julius and Bertha
Bruesewitz. She was raised on a
farm outside of Grafton until
age seven, when the family moved
into town where Myrtle has lived
all her life. She married Arnold
Buechele on September 17, 1933
in Grafton. Myrtle was a
lifelong homemaker who enjoyed
gardening, baking, and sewing.
She was a lifelong member of the
Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Myrtle is
survived by one son, Jerry
Buechele and his wife, Joy of
Grafton; two grandchildren, Sara
and Steve Moroney of Encinitas,
California and Andy and Lisa
Buechele of Grafton; three
great-grandchildren, Hayley,
Dylan and Briar Buechele; and
many nieces, nephews, cousins,
and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded
in death by her parents;
husband, Arnold in 1975; one
brother, Art Bruesewitz; and two
sisters, Lydia Kuntz and Lora
Walk.
