Osage youth killed in
tragic accident
Family, friends mourn
the loss of 14-year old
Cody Mobley
November 7, 2007
by David Namanny
Press-News Editor
A
14-year-old Osage youth
died on Friday after
being ejected from the
sport utility vehicle he
was riding in with his
16-year-old brother.
According
to reports from the
Mitchell County
Sheriff's Department,
the accident occurred at
5:15 p.m., just east of
Quail Avenue on 410th
Street west of Osage.
Cody
Mobley, was pronounced
dead at the scene as a
result of the accident.
His brother, Benjamin
Mobley, the driver,
sustained injuries and
was transported to the
St. Mary's Hospital in
Rochester for medical
treatment. He has since
been released.
According
to a separate report
from the Iowa State
Patrol, the boys were
traveling east on 410th
Street when the vehicle
in front of their 1998
Ford Explorer slowed so
its passengers could
look at a deer standing
in the ditch.
Apparently, Benjamin
Mobley did not notice
the car's speed change
due to dust. By the time
he saw the vehicle, he
was forced to swerve to
avoid a collision.
The left
wheels of the Mobley's
SUV dropped off the side
of the road, and the
Explorer rolled as it
came back onto 410th
Street.
Assisting
the Sheriff's Department
and Highway Patrol at
the scene were officers
from the Osage Police
Department, Mitchell
County Regional Health
Center Ambulance and the
Mayo One Helicopter from
Rochester, Minnesota.
According
to his obituary provided
by the Champion-Bucheit
Funeral Home in Osage,
Cody Mobley was a
ninth-grader at the
Osage High School.
He took
part in many school
activities, including
band, football,
wrestling, track and
baseball. He was an
active member of Sacred
Heart Church in Osage
and liked to hunt and
fish.
He tended
to gardens and mowed
several lawns in the
Osage area during the
summer.
Steve
Williams, superintendent
of the Osage Community
Schools, said students
and staff mourned the
passing of Cody Mobley
throughout the weekend.
Counselor
were available at the
high school on Saturday,
and spoke with grieving
friends of Mobley again
on Monday. Counselors
will continue to be
available throughout the
week.
"It's
always very difficult
any time you have a
crisis like this,"
Williams said. "I'm sure
we'll band together, but
right now the healing is
kind of slow and
challenging."
Funeral
services were held at
10:30 a.m., on Tuesday,
at the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in
