Osage Woman Found
Deceased in Home
April 10,
2007
When fire
fighters first arrived a
310 Vine Street late
last Thursday morning,
they expected to find a
fire. What they found
instead was evidence of
a previous fire, along
with a deceased victim
who lived at the home,
Dianne Trusty, age 56 of
Osage.
After
hearing the results of
the autopsy this past
Monday afternoon, local
authorities stated that
Trusty's death was
caused by smoke
inhalation.
Osage
Police Captain Mike
Neimeyer, who was with
an official from the
State Fire Marshal's
office Monday, noted
that the cause of the
fire was a kerosene
lantern that was
accidentally knocked
over.
It is
speculated that because
the home was sealed so
well, the fire that
originated in the
kitchen/dining room
area, extinguished
itself because of lack
of oxygen.
It was
also speculated that
Trusty had been sleeping
when the fire occurred,
but couldn't make it to
the door after being
awakened, as she was
overcome by smoke.
Further
reports by local
officials speculate that
phone lines in the
kitchen were compromised
by the fire, therefore,
any calls or emergency
signals from the home
did not go through.
Also lost
in the fire were a dog
and cat, who apparently
died of smoke inhalation
as well.
It all
began at 10:55 a.m. last
Thursday, when a worker
from Mitchell County
Home Health, who was
making a call to the
house, discovered
evidence of a fire and
contacted emergency
responders. She reported
seeing what looked like
soot and ashes on the
windows and doors.
The Osage
Fire Department and
Osage Police Department
responded to the scene
at 11:00 a.m. Hoses were
drawn to hydrants and
axes and pry bars were
made ready.
Firefighters broke in
the front door and found
Trusty inside the home.
She was pronounced dead
at the scene.
Osage
Fire Chief Kurt Angell
said there was no fire
or smoke when the
department arrived but
there was evidence of a
fire the night before.
