Herbert Plagge

Herbert Frederich Dietrich Plagge, 88, of Latimer, died on
Thursday, August 4, 2011.
Services were held on
Monday, August 8, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in
Latimer. Burial was in the Marion Center Cemetery.
Herbert Plagge, the son of Louis and Louise Immerman Plagge,
was born on March 7, 1923, on the family farm north of
Latimer where he grew up. He married Margaret Myli on August
20, 1948, at the Northwood Lutheran Church. They lived near
Latimer where Herbert farmed.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2005; infant son,
Darrell; and brothers, Laverne and Wayne.
He is survived by sons, Curtis (Beverly) and Gary; and
sisters, Lorena (Don) Koch and Elaine (Don) Reinke.

Robert McAllister
August 9, 2011
Robert M. McAllister, 93, of Dows, died on Friday, August 5,
2011, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, August 10, at the Dows
Presbyterian Church. Burial will take place in the Fairview
Cemetery in Dows. Military graveside honors will be provided
by the Dows American Legion Watson-Beach Post #523.
Visitation will be held from 5–7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the
Dugger Funeral Home in Dows and will continue one hour prior
to the services at the church.

Irene McMannus
August 9, 2011
Irene McMannus, 89, of Belmond, died on Friday, August 5,
2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond, with her
daughter at her side.
Services will be held at
10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, August 9, at the Belmond United
Methodist Church. Burial will take place in the Belmond
Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m., on
Monday, August 8, at the Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond and
will continue one hour prior to the services at the church.
Irene, the daughter of Emil and Tena Groen Trager, was born
on September 15, 1921, on the family farm near Meservey. She
married Melvin McMannus and they lived most of their married
life in the Belmond area. She worked for many years at the
Belmond Hospital and then for Winnebago Industries before
her retirement in 1982.
Irene was a member of the
Belmond United Methodist Church and was a 50-year member of
the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary in Belmond. Irene enjoyed doing
puzzles, knitting and crocheting. Her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren are all proud owners
of her beautiful crocheted afghans. She was a wonderful
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be truly
missed by all.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin;
son-in-law, Jerry Dorr; brothers, August, Henry, Carl and
Fred; and sister, Henrietta Kaduce.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, JoAnn
Dorr of Belmond; son, James McMannus of Tehachapie,
California; grandson, Mark A. (Ruth) Dorr of West Des
Moines; and special great-granddaughters, Nina Ann and Amara
Grace Dorr of West Des Moines.

Ervin Meyer
August 16, 2011
Ervin J. Meyer, 91, of Latimer, died on Tuesday, August 9,
2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.
Services were held on
Saturday, August 13, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ
in Latimer.
Ervin John Ernest, the son of Arthur and Mary Immerman
Meyer, was born on November 27, 1919, on the family farm
north of Latimer. He attended country school. Ervin married
Margaret Bessman on December 12, 1940. They made their home
in the Latimer and Alexander areas, where they farmed and
raised their family. He was a self-taught pilot and a member
of the Flying Farmers of America and the Civil Air Patrol.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2010; son-in-law,
Paul Armento III; and brother, Ivan in 2011.
Ervin is survived by his children, Lawrence (Janet) of
Alexander and Marianne Armento of Springfield, Illinois;
four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ivan Oleson
August 16, 2011
Ivan R. Oleson, 73, died on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at
the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
A graveside service was
held on Monday, August 15, in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Dows.
Ivan Russell, the son of Russell and Viola Meyer Oleson, was
born on December 2, 1937 in Hampton. He grew up in the Dows
area and graduated from the Dows High School in 1936. He
then began farming. He was a member of the First Lutheran
Church in Dows.
Ivan is survived by his sister, Deanna (Dennis) Fahrmann;
and brothers, Marvin (Carolyn) and Dennis (Linda).

Arlene Allen
August 23, 2011
Arlene Jeanette Allen, 89, died on Sunday, August 14, 2011,
in San Jose, California, surrounded by her family.
Services were held on
Saturday, August 20, at the Oak Hill Funeral Home in San
Jose. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery on Saturday,
September 24 at 11:00 a.m.
Arlene Jeanette was born on July 5, 1922 in Belmond, to Erma
Meacham and Arthur Leonard. She graduated from the Belmond
High School in 1940 and went on to get her teaching
credential and teach in a one-room country schoolhouse. She
moved to Oakland, California, where she worked many jobs,
including childcare for mothers working to support the war
effort, Mare Island Naval Ship Yard and Kahn’s Department
Store. She married Carl Taylor in 1950 and had two children,
Art and Linda. She was an accomplished seamstress, having a
dressmaking business at home. In 1960, the family moved to
Saratoga, California. She and Carl divorced in 1963 and she
worked at O’Connor Hospital as an assistant to the
dietician.
She later married Don Allen and they had a loving
relationship for 44 years until his recent death. Don and
Arlene loved camping and water skiing at Lake Berryessa.
They spent their retirement years traveling the country,
spending a lot of time in Arizona in the winter. Arlene was
a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She
was a direct descendant of Miles Standish.
Arlene was preceded in death by her sisters, Lova, Cleona
and Icle; and brother, Art.
The highlight of Arlene’s life was her family, daughter
Linda (John) Bernal and son, Art (Shelley) Taylor;
grandsons, Joe (Nicole) Gresham, Brandon (Nicole Bricker),
Brett Taylor and Ryan Hover; step-grandsons, John and Jeff
(Laura) Bernal; and many nieces and nephews. There was
nothing she loved more than being a mother and a
grandmother.
Memorials may be made to the Daughters of the American
Revolution or the Red Cross.

Edgar Mayhew
August 31, 2011
Edgar “Junior” Mayhew, 83, died on Tueday, August 23, 2001,
at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond of complications
from a stroke.
A private graveside
service will be held at a later date. The Andrews Funeral
Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Edgar was born on the family farm near Goodell in Hancock
County, on March 30, 1928 to Edgar V. and Leona F. (Sandry)
Mayhew. He attended school in Goodell from first through
eleventh grade, and graduated from the Belmond High School
in 1946. Junior worked on the family farm up until 1989 at
which time his father had a stroke. He spent the next few
years caring for his elderly parents. His father passed away
in May 1993 and his mother in March 1995. Junior continued
living on the farm until failing health caused him to enter
the Rehabilitation Center in June 2005.
Junior enjoyed numerous things including watching
television, playing bingo, doing crosswords and jigsaw
puzzles. He also loved to talk about John Deere tractors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Dr.
Charles Sprugel; and great-nephew, Justin Hendricks.
Edgar’s love and memories will continue on with his sister,
Gladys Marie Sprugel of the Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls; and
nieces, Vicki L. Sprugel of Marshalltown and Beth (Brent)
Hendricks of Grinnell and their sons, Isaac B. and Zachary
W. Hendricks.

Armin Passehl

Armin W. H. Passehl, 90, of Latimer, died on Sunday, August
28, 2011.
He was born on December 14, 1920 in rural Latimer, the
youngest child of Edward and Martha (Meyer) Passehl. He
married Viola Larsen on October 1, 1941 in Alexander. He was
the third generation on the family’s Century Farm.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Howard; sisters,
Irma Yakel and Bernice Dreyer; and son-in-law, Verle
Hackbarth.
He is survived by his wife of Latimer; son, Gordon (Denise)
Passehl of Latimer; and daughter, Jeanne Hackbarth of
Waterloo.

Esther Cooper
August 31, 2011
Esther Cooper, 88, died on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at the
Franklin General Nursing Facility in Hampton.
She was born on January 30, 1923 in Belmond, to Fred and
Marie (Lorenz) Gabel, Sr. Esther attended the Alexander
Schools and married Emory Cooper in 1940. They lived in
Hampton.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers;
and four sisters.
She is survived by her son, Larry (Judy) Cooper of
Fairfield; daughters, Karen K. Cooper of Cedar Rapids and
Diane (Ron) Paine of Hampton.
