Craig E. Hackbarth

Craig E. Hackbarth, 64, died on Sunday, April 10, 2011, at
the Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton, following a courageous
battle with cancer.
Services will be held at
10:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 14, at the Phillips Funeral
Chapel in Vinton, with Rev. John Karrick officiating. A
private committal service will be held in the Evergreen
Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call at the funeral home
from 4-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be given to the Craig Hackbarth Scholarship
Fund.
Craig was born on January 29, 1947 at Hampton, to Milton E.
and Anne P. (Keepf) Hackbarth. He graduated from the Iowa
Falls High School and then attended mechanics school in Des
Moines. He served in the Army National Guard from 1967 to
1971. Craig farmed in the Iowa Falls area before beginning
his 42-year career with Fareway Stores. He was manager of
the Fareway (Fastco) Store in Belmond for a time. He became
manager of the Vinton Fareway in 1989 and worked until his
retirement on July 18, 2009. Craig married Judy K. Hinton.
On February 8, 1992, he was united in marriage to Brenda
Freese at Vinton.
Craig was a member of the Vinton Country Club, the Vinton
Kiwanis Club and the Izaak Walton League.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother,
Darreld.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda; daughter, Robin
(Patrick) Dorr of Belmond; son, William Hackbarth of Boone;
grandchildren, Skylar (special friend Kyle), Nicholas and
Kassidy Dorr; sister, Sharon Anderson of Independence;
brother, James (Judy) of Roseville, California; the Freese
family; and his Fareway family.

Sid Severson
April 19, 2011
Sidney R. Severson, 69, of rural Clarion, died unexpectedly
on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, while visiting his daughter in
Texas.
Services were held on
Monday, April 18, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church west of
Belmond. Burial was in the St. Olaf Cemetery. The Andrews
Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Sidney, the son of Kenneth Pershing and Icle (Leonard)
Severson, was born on June 29, 1941 at Belmond. He grew up
in Grant Township, Wright County, where he attended rural
schools. He graduated from the Clarion High School in 1960.
While in high school, Sid participated in various activities
and excelled at wrestling. He placed third in the state
wrestling tournament in 1959 in the 165 pound weight class.
Sid was a lifelong farmer who truly loved to work the earth
and raise animals. Sid had a lifelong passion for horses. He
served on the Iowa High School Rodeo Board of Directors as a
district director in the 1970's. He spent 25 years working
with the Iowa Cutting Horse Association where he held every
position, including multiple terms as president. Sid was
inducted into the I. C. H. A. Hall of Fame in 2006. Sid
was united in marriage to Sherry German on January 13, 1986,
at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They enjoyed life on
the farm in rural Wright County and looked forward to times
spent together in the garden and attending the many
activities of their children and grandchildren.
Sid retired from full time
farming in 1993, but never truly retired. He continued to
pursue his passion of horses. Sid also loved to spend time
tinkering in his shop making items out of steel and other
materials. He worked for seven years during retirement at
North Central Co-op in Clarion and recently had done some
driving for Hagie Manufacturing in Clarion.
Sid was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of Clarion and her children, John
(Jenna) German and their children, Desiree and Ethan all of
Belmond and Nick (Stacy) German and their children, Paige
and Justin all of Clarion; Sid's children, Troy (Beth)
Severson of Clarion and their children, Allison, Clayton and
Knuton all of Clarion; daughter, Traci Gorton and her
children, Alaina and Landon all of Clarion; and daughter,
Tanya (Kenny) Scribner and their children, Paige and Jarrett
all of Sanger, Texas.

Barbara Crafton
April 19, 2011
Barbara Jo Crafton, 54, died on Wednesday, April 13, 2011,
at her home in Dows.
Services were held on
Monday, April 18, at the United Church of Rowan, with burial
in the Graceland cemetery near Rowan.
Barbara Jo, the daughter of Verle and Pat Ketchum Crafton,
was born on January 28, 1957 in Belmond. She grew up in the
Rowan area, attending elementary school in Rowan. She
graduated from the Belmond High School in 1975. Barbara
married Galyn Cross in 1975, and they had two children.
Later, Barbara was married to Paul Vulgamott for a time.
Barbara worked in various capacities. First and foremost she
was a housewife and mother. She worked at the Belmond and
Dows Health Care Centers, Dows Pharmacy, Dows Grocery Store,
Caseys and other businesses in the Dows and Williams area.
She enjoyed volunteering with the Dows Ambulance as a first
responder. Later, Barbara worked for Winnebago in Hampton
and Haps Air Service in Ames. Most recently she worked as
the office manager for Parks of Iowa in Ellsworth prior to
her illness.
Barbara is remembered most importantly for the love she had
for her family. She was devoted to attending her children's
activities. She enjoyed researching her family genealogy,
crocheting, tatting and was a recreational golfer. Barbara
had a special golfing group which she enjoyed both on and
off the course. As a child she belonged to 4-H and was a
baptized and confirmed member of the United Church of Rowan.
Later, Barbara served as secretary for the Dows United
Methodist Church and served on the Williams City Council.
She belonged to the Dows American Legion Auxiliary, helping
with numerous monthly dinners. Barbara enjoyed staying busy,
and was always looking for ways to help others. She was
instrumental in the recent fundraiser for the family of and
baby, Ava Braun.
She was preceded in death by her brother, James in 1988 and
her grandparents.
Barbara is survived by her children, Jennifer (Steven) Scott
of Osceola and Adam of Williams; parents, Verle and Pat
Crafton of Rowan; step granddaughters, Amanda Jo Schrad and
Anthony, Jessica Scott; step great-granddaughter, Reagan;
sister, DeAnn (Robert) Merrilees of St Charles, ON; brother,
Randall (Joann) Crafton of Ft Madison; sister-in-law, Jolene
Crafton of Norwalk; and nephews, Jason and Matthew.

Anna Mae Brinton
April 19, 2011
Anna Mae Brinton, 88, died on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at
the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.
Services will be held at
10:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 21, at the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Belmond. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 20, from 5-7:00 p.m.,
at the Andrews Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to
the services at the church.
Anna Mae, the daughter of Andrew Morgan and Anna Georgena (Satre)
Hill, was born on August 2, 1922 in Stanhope. She was
educated in the Stanhope School District and graduated in
1940. She married Marshall "Homer" Brinton on October 23,
1941, at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Stanhope. Anna
Mae and Homer farmed at Stanhope and Fertile from 1941-1963.
They purchased the Belmond Hotel in 1963 and operated it
until it was destroyed by the tornado on October 14, 1966.
Anna worked as a soil technician for U.S. Steel in Belmond.
From 1966-1998, Anna and Homer drove Winnebago motor homes
for Morgan Drive Away in Forest City and for Lifetime in
Mason City.
Anna and Homer lived in Apache Junction and Queen Creek,
Arizona, for 14 winters and resided in Belmond during the
summers. Her husband, children and grandchildren were the
most treasured parts of her life. She was a terrific cook
and when her children and their families visited her home,
they could always count on wonderful aromas of their
favorite meals and desserts coming from her kitchen. In
recent years, Anna Mae was a resident of the Hampton Care
Center and the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.
Anna Mae was an active member of the Fertile and Belmond
Lutheran Churches, participating in circles, ladies aid,
Bible study and teaching Sunday School and Bible School.
Anna Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband;
grandchildren, Emily Morgan Knoll and Benjamin Scott Meints;
sisters, Olive Fardell, Gladys Pierson and Fern Hill; and
brother, Idres Hill.
Those left to cherish Anna Mae's memory are her children,
Diane M. (Lance) Burtness of Branson, Missouri, Donna
Brinton (Ron) Hawkins of Belle Plaine, Minnesota, Mark
(Margaret) Brinton of San Diego, California, Mary Brinton of
Grand Junction, Colorado, Deborah (Kevin) Knoll of Belmond
and Lisa (Rodney) Meints of Belmond; and her in-laws, Gene
(Nola) Brinton of Wilmar, Minnesota and Lucille Brinton of
Chandler, Arizona.

Dorothy Waddington
- Visitation April 22

Dorothy Waddington, 96, died on Wednesday, March 30, 2011,
at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Visitation will be
held on Friday, April 22, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Andrews
Funeral Home.
She was born on November
21, 1914 in George, the daughter of Peter and Gertrude
Barendregt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; sister,
Elizabeth Naplolitano; and brother, Cornelius Barendregt.
She is survived by her son, Neal Waddington; grandchildren,
Ryan Waddington and Angela Selseth; and seven
great-grandchildren.

Howard Tulp

Howard R. Tulp, 83, a longtime resident of Goodell, died on
Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at his home in Belmond.
Services were held on
Monday, April 25, at the Goodell United Methodist Church,
with Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial with military
honors preceded the service.
Howard Roy, the son of Herman and Effie (Olson) Tulp, was
born on January 6, 1928 at Wimbledon, North Dakota. He moved
with his family to Rowan and attended country school. At age
seven Howard's inquisitive mind and interest in things of a
mechanical nature led him to disassemble and reassemble a
John Deere tractor. Following his education, Howard was
employed at the implement shop in Rowan, the Clarion Pontiac
dealer, at Banwell Co. and at various other businesses. He
married Barbara Lee West on July 5, 1947, at the First
Congregational Church in Forest City. They were later
divorced.
Howard entered the United States Army on October 25, 1950.
He was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He was honorably
discharged as a PFC with a specialty as Master Mechanic and
transferred to the Reserves on November 7, 1952.
Howard married Lyola L. Pals on June 19, 1953, at the
Presbyterian Church in Clarion. This union was blessed with
four children, Paula, Harlan, Joy and Harvey.
Howard's careers led him down many roads. He farmed for a
number of years and worked as a mechanic during most of his
life. He operated Tulp’s Repair, ran semi tractors, owned
Tulp’s DX Station in Belmond and Tulp Motors in Goodell. He
dabbled in businesses such as a Toro dealership, snowmobile
sales, fertilizer sales and seed corn. He remained active
throughout his life and tinkering on one of his many
inventions such as his pontoon paddle wheel boat, delving
into his love of engines as he helped with a family race car
engine, assisting with a family construction project, or
spending time involved with his love of flying and
experimental aircraft. His passion for flying was rekindled
recently as he was looking forward to assisting his
son-in-law with the construction of an airplane.
Howard and Lyola enjoyed many travels, including trips to
Hawaii and the Dominican Republic and regional treks to
places like New Ulm, Minnesota, where Howard enjoyed the
polka festivals. He enjoyed car racing, especially the
events his family was involved in. He was a NASCAR fan.
Howard was a member of the Goodell United Methodist Church
and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He was very proud
of his country and was a longtime member of the military
service organizations in Klemme and Goodell, including time
as post commander.
Howard was united in marriage to Esther L. Tiggemann on June
22, 1994, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple
enjoyed traveling. Esther became a resident of the
Rehabilitation Center of Belmond in September 2006.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Carol
Barrick and her husband, Harry and Karna Brinkman and her
husband, Garland; and his wife, Esther Tulp on April 14,
2010.
Survivors include his daughter, Paula (Terry) Johnson of
Kanawha and their family, Shawn Shahan (Billie Jo) and their
children, Jaiden and Jenna and Chad Shahan; son, Harlan
(Karen) Tulp of Belmond and their family, Elizabeth (Seth)
Malek, Holden (Tracy) Tulp and their daughter, Taryn, Kyle
Tulp and Heath Tulp; daughter, Joy (Kurt) Gines of Logan,
Utah and their family, Nicholas (Ana) Gines, Emily Gines,
Aaron Gines and Katelin Gines; son, Harvey (June) Tulp of
Goodell and their family, Heather (Justin) Tompkins, Danie'l
(Nicholas) Johnson and their family, Mary Ann and Mary Jane,
Hadley Tulp and Crystal Goeman.

Jackie Williamson

Jackie Sue Williamson, 64, of Belmond, died on Monday, April
25, 2011, at her home of a sudden illness.
Services were held on
Friday, April 29, at the Belmond United Methodist Church,
with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial was in the
Belmond Cemetery. The Dugger Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
Jackie, the daughter of Leroy and Dorothy Kemmis Drake, was
born on July 10, 1946 in Battle Creek, Michigan. She
graduated from the Battle Creek Central High School in 1964.
Jackie married her high school sweetheart, Joe Williamson,
on September 18, 1965. They made their home in Battle Creek
and started a family. Jackie worked at the Cut Rate Grocery
Store and operated an in-home daycare service. In 1983, Joe
and Jackie moved to Belmond, following work for the Eaton
Corporation. Jackie worked in various capacities. In
addition to caring for young children in her home, she
worked at Printing Services in Belmond and volunteered at
the Lyric Theater. Jackie’s favorite job, though, was caring
for her children and grandchildren and following their
activities.
She enjoyed golfing,
bowling, ping pong and playing cribbage. She loved her Shih
Tzu Stinky. Jackie was a member of the Belmond Country Club
and the Belmond United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her life-long
love, husband, Joe.
Jackie is survived by her children, Stacy (Dave) Rooney of
Center Point and Jeff (Jessica) of Belmond; grandchildren,
Logan, Drake, Colten, Shania, Alex and Camryn; sister, Sandy
(Ron) Jones of Battle Creek; brother, Jerry (Shirley) Drake
of Battle Creek; niece, Kelly (Scot) Lenz of Battle Creek;
and nephew, Kurt (Rosa) Jones of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Eloise Prescott

Eloise R. Prescott, 86, of Clear Lake, died on Saturday,
April 30, 2011, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake
surrounded by her family.
Services were held on
Friday, May 6, at the Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond, with
Associate in Ministry Carolyn Pflibsen of the Trinity
Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was in the Memorial Park
Cemetery in Mason City.
Eloise Ruth, the daughter of Joel L. and Nellie V. Walden
Dimmet, was born on February 6, 1925 in Kansas City,
Missouri. To say Eloise lived a lifetime as a young girl
would be an understatement. She suffered from polio and had
treatments and surgery at the Shriner’s Hospital in Chicago
multiple times. She attended grade school in Clinton, Iowa
and high school at a Bible College in Clinton. She moved to
Gary, Indiana, where she graduated from the Emerson High
School in 1943. Influenced by a woman who helped raise her,
Eloise was a devout member of the Nazarene Church, sometimes
attending 3-6 times a week.
Eloise married Roger L. Prescott on December 30, 1942 in
Gary. The couple moved to Mason City and later to an acreage
north of Clear Lake. Eloise lived on the acreage from 1949
until after Roger died in May 1990. She then moved to an
apartment in Clear Lake. She entered Oakwood Care Center in
2003.
Eloise belonged to several organizations in Clear Lake: the
DAV Auxiliary, where she served as Auxiliary Commander;
Senior Citizens, the Oakland Club, and the North Iowa Travel
Club. She loved doing crafts, crocheting, gardening and
camping. Eloise’s life was her family, and she greatly
enjoyed their get-togethers throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son,
Gerald on June 26, 2010; grandson, Billy on April 30, 1982;
and great-grandsons, Nathan and Joshua Eckard.
Eloise is survived by her children, James of Waukesha,
Wisconsin and Dennis (Lavonne) of Belmond; daughter-in-law,
Sandra of Sheffield; grandchildren, Monica Eckard of
Sheffield, Brian (Mollie) of Galesburg, Illinois, Cathy
(Chad) Bingman of Williamsburg, Virginia, Joel of Belmond,
and Kristin of West Des Moines; great-grandchildren,
Nicholas Prescott and Matthew Eckard; brothers-in-law,
Ronald (Helen) of Raceland, Kentucky and Dale of Mission,
Texas; and sisters-in-law, Marlys (Ray) Christenson of Clear
Lake and Maxine Westover of Clear Lake.
