Services for Kenneth Price

August 6, 2009

Graveside services for Kenneth Price, who died on December 19, 2008, will be held on Friday, August 7, 2009, at the Boone Township Cemetery, east of Stilson, Iowa, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Joel DeBoer officiating.

Military rites will be conducted by the Britt American Legion Post # 0315.

Casual dress is encouraged and please join the family for a meal and reminiscing at the Price farm following the services. No memorials please.

Ruth "Ivene" Nelson, 78

August 11, 2009

Ruth “Ivene” Nelson, 78, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday August 2, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 7, at the Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake, with Rev. Kent Wagner officiating. Interment was in the Brush Point Cemetery, rural Fertile. Visitation was on Thursday, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake and also one hour before the services on Friday at the church. Family suggests memorials to the Clear Lake Evangelical Free Church Missions or to the Hospice of North Iowa.

Ivene was born on August 27, 1930 in Forest City, the daughter of Leo H. and Synneva Sophie (Hjelmeland) Elthon. She graduated from the Fertile High School in 1948 and continued her education at Hamilton Business College. Following school she went to Des Moines to be her father's secretary in the Iowa Legislature in the Senate. Ivene married Les Nelson on May 8, 1949, at the Fertile Gospel Mission Church. They lived in Northwood, later to her father's farm rural Fertile, in to Fertile then to Mason City and then to Clear Lake.

She enjoyed sewing, interior decorating, knitting, crocheting, cooking, traveling, shopping, Christian Women's Club and having coffee with her friends. She was very active in the Republican party. She was a member of the Clear Lake Evangelical Free Church.

Ivene is survived by her husband, Les Nelson of Clear Lake; three children, J.D.  Nelson and his wife, Debbie of Clear Lake, Robert Nelson of Clear Lake and Ann Weitzel and her husband, Tom of Estes Park, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Sara Briggs and her husband, Andy, Andrew Nelson and his wife, Jill, Aaron Nelson, Erika Weitzel, Lindsey Wietzel, Breanna Weitzel, Jason Weitzel and Chelsea Weitzel; six great-grandchildren, Jenna Nelson, Samuel Nelson, Ezekiel Nelson, Jada Nelson, Kenneth Briggs and Harrison Briggs; two sisters, Dorothy Davis of San Clemente, California and Amy Mahoney and her husband, Wendell of Clear Lake; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Elthon and Evelyn Juvet; and a brother-in-law, Jim Lemon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, David and Alan Elthon; and one sister, Sylvia Lemon.

Marjorie D. Johnson, 82

August 11, 2009

Marjorie D. Johnson, 82, of Forest City, died Monday, August 3, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Rev. Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa or to the Good Samaritan Society in Forest City.

Marjorie Delores Johnson, the daughter of Arthur and Goldie (Holloway) Austin, was born on January 17, 1927 at Detroit, Michigan. At an early age she moved with her family to Forest City where she graduated from high school in 1945. On September 13, 1945, she was married to Curtis Swanson. They made their home in Forest City. In January 1959, Curtis passed away. On August 26, 1961, she was married to Howard Johnson at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. They farmed west of Forest City until 1979 when they moved to Leland. Marge had worked at Fowser's Department Store and later Hanson's Fine Jewelry in Forest City. In 2006, after celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary, Marge and Howard moved to the Forest Plaza Assisted Living in Forest City.

She enjoyed reading, cooking and traveling with Howard throughout the U.S. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, WELCA and Birthday Club. She also was a past 4-H Leader and member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Marge is survived by her husband, Howard; four daughters, Penny (Richard) Knudson of Alexandria, Minnesota, Deb (Gregory) Sprau of Stanchfield, Minnesota, Shelly Johnson of Mt. Vernon, Iowa and Trudy (Chuck) Tessaro of Seattle, Washington; and grandchildren, Scott (Sue) Knudson, Eric Knudson, Chris (Jenny) Sprau, Brian Sprau, Will and Clint Ambroson, Ali Hagarty and Cora, Cleo and Eva Tessaro.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Curtis; parents; twin infant brothers; a brother, Gene Austin; and grandson, Antonio Tessaro.

Linda F. Lunning, 63

August 11, 2009

Linda F.  Lunning, 63, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at her home.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 7, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Madison Township Cemetery. Visitation was held on Thursday, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and continued one hour prior to the services at the church. 

Linda Frances Lunning, the daughter of Bjarne and Dorothy (Hornor) Haugland, was born on June 28, 1946 at Garner. She grew up on the family farm near Woden and graduated from the Woden Crystal Lake High School. Linda continued her education at Mankato Community College in Minnesota. On December 19, 1963, she was married to Roger Lunning at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. 

They made their home in Forest City where they raised their two children, Teri and Todd. Linda had worked at Winnebago Industries as a secretary, the Forest City Summit and for the past 28 years as a media aid at the Forest City High School.

She loved her husband, grandchildren, spending time with family and friends, her home, playing cards, games, fishing, dancing, camping, crossword puzzles, traveling and was an avid Elvis Presley collector. Linda sponsored and was involved with Ducks Unlimited for the last 20 years. She enjoyed meeting new people and when they met her, her smile and laugh were an impression you would never forget. Linda and Roger enjoyed traveling with Winnebago Itasca Travelers and going to rallies in other states. They especially enjoyed their travels to Las Vegas, Lake Havasu and most recently to Mexico. 

She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and WELCA.

Linda's life and memory will live on in the lives of her husband of 45 years, Roger of Forest City; her children, Teri (Dan) Vermedahl of Lake Mills and Todd (Sherri) Lunning of Forest City; grandchildren, Matt, Kayla, Hayle and Linzy Vermedahl and Maranda and Cody Lunning; her mother, Dorothy Haugland of Woden; brothers, Dean (Doris) Haugland of Crystal Lake and Dale (LaRae) Haugland of Eldridge, Missouri; brother-in-law, Paul Lenz of Spencer; mother-in-law, Anola Lunning of Mason City; brothers-in-law, Verdell Lunning of Forest City, Darryl (Wanda) Lunning of Austin, Minnesota and Jerry (Mona Rae) Lunning of Forest City; sisters-in-law, Denise (Doug) Rogers of Forest City, Deb (Scott) Loge of Forest City and Connie Lunning of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bjarne; father-in-law, Virgil; sister, Jean Lenz; sister-in-law, Leola Lunning; and brother-in-law, Lynn Lunning.

Gene “Hank” Veldhouse, 61

September 22, 2009

Gene “Hank” Heiko Veldhouse, passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, in Boise, Idaho, at the Veterans Community Living Center Hospice Unit, after a recent cancer diagnosis.

A memorial service was held on Friday, August 14, 2009, at the Allen Nobel Hall of Fame, Bronco Stadium at Boise State University. A full military honor service was held at the Idaho State Veteran's Cemetery.

Gene was born on August 2, 1948 in Belmond, to Daniel Veldhouse and Shirley Nall Holck. He served in the U.S. Navy for more than 20 years as a missile specialist. He toured many parts of the world. He loved his tour to Hawaii where his three children were raised. He was involved in their soccer team as a coach and referee and accompanied one daughter to win a national championship.

Gene loved his family and friends very much. He enjoyed camping, attending BSU games and spending time with his grandchildren. Gene's memories will never die.

Gene is survived by his wife, Mary; his three children, Nick (Noelle) Veldhouse, China (Jeremy) Gum and Marquita Veldhouse, all from Idaho. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Kaija, Jerry, Reisa, Max, Scarlett and Charlize; brothers, Richard Veldhouse of California, Daniel (Deb) Veldhouse of Britt, Doug Veldhouse of Idaho, Curt (Sondra) Holck of Ankeny and Mark (Jodi) Holck of Clear Lake; and sister, Mona Bauer of Kanawha; and many nieces and nephews.

Doris M. Isaacson, 96

August 11, 2009

Doris Marie Isaacson, 96, of Northwood, died on Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at The Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Memorial services were held on Monday, August 10, 2009, at the United Methodist Church of Northwood, with Rev. Wendy Gillan officiating. Private inurnment will take place in the Sunset Rest Cemetery. In memory of Doris, those who wish may give to the Northwood United Methodist Church or to the Northwood Meals on Wheels.

Doris Marie Gelner Isaacson, was born with twin, Donald Gelner on July 20, 1913, to Amelia and Ferdinand Gelner on a farm south of Forest City. She attended rural school in Madison Township, graduated from the Forest City High School with a normal training certificate and taught rural school in Ellington Township for three years. She married Floyd Isaacson on November 1, 1934. To this union were born Joan, Judith and James. Doris and Floyd lived in Forest City for four years, Lost Island for two years and Greene for 10 years and moved to Northwood in 1952.

She was a bookkeeper at both the Graettinger and Northwood Creameries and worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for the Worth County Co-op Oil Company for more than 26 years. She retired on August 31, 1986.

She was an honorary 4-H member and a member of the United Methodist Church and Ada Circle. She served as a trustee on the administrative church board and was a member of several commissions and committees. Doris was an active member of the Semper Fidelis Study Club. Her hobbies were flower gardening, quilting and bridge. She was an avid sports spectator. She walked daily with her friends, which was a source of great pleasure.

She is survived by her children, Joan Isaacson of Bloomington, Minnesota, Judy (Claude) Gianetto of Boulder, Colorado and Jim (Edna) Isaacson of Woodridge, Illinois; six grandsons, Mark (Jody) Gianetto, Jim (Doris) Gianetto, Dan Gianetto, Brian (Christina) Isaacson, Chad (Brienne) Isaacson and David Isaacson; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; brothers, Leon, Donald and Harvey Gelner; and sisters, Bernice Dalhauser and Ruth Brown. Those who knew her and loved her will always miss her.

The Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, is handling the arrangements for the Isaacson family.

Arlo B. Carson, 95

August 11, 2009

Arlo B. Carson, 95, of Forest City, died on Sunday, August 9, 2009, at Forest Plaza Assisted Living in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with Rev. Jerry Swanberg officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church Foundation, Heritage Park Church, YMCA or to the donor's choice.

Arlo Bruce Carson, the son of Dr. George and Ethel (Dannatt) Carson, was born on April 11, 1914 at Lake Mills. He attended school at Lake Mills, Thompson and Albert Lea, Minnesota, where he graduated from high school in 1932. Arlo continued his education at Waldorf College. While in Albert Lea, he was active in Boy Scouts. During his youth, he spent time with his father on his veterinary calls and in his Lake Mills office. While living in Thompson, he began spending weekends and vacations at his grandfather's farm near Leland, where he gained an appreciation and the skills for the farming life.

In the spring of 1936, he accepted a job with the Albert Lea Seed House and later with Gulbranson Hardware in Albert Lea. On March 19, 1939, he married Joy Ione Lenning at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, after which they began farming east of Thompson. In the spring of 1949, they purchased a farm south of Thompson. During his five decades on the farm, Arlo raised hogs and cattle along with grain crops. He was the first farmer in the area to adopt narrow row crops.

Arlo served on the Elevator, Locker and Winnebago Cooperative Telephone Boards. He joined the Winnebago Rural Electric Cooperative Board in 1957, served in all the offices of the board and was President at the time of his retirement. He was active in the Thompson scouting program when his sons were in Cub Scouts. He enjoyed flying his Piper J-3 Cub and later his Cessna 172, when work and weather permitted. In 1987, the Carsons' sold part of their farm and built a home in Forest City.

Arlo continued his public service after retirement because he enjoyed helping people. Arlo became active in the YMCA, delivered Meals on Wheels for several years, helped at the Neighborhood Food Bank and served on its board of directors and served on the Manufacturers Bank and Trust Advisory Board. Arlo was on the Kum-Along Club Board for seven years. In 1996, the Club crowned Arlo and Joy as king and queen and named Arlo as Volunteer of the Year in 1997.

Both Forest City Lions Clubs awarded him their Citizen of the Year Award. Arlo and Joy were the grand marshals for the 2000 Puckerbrush Parade. In 2001, the Forest City Chamber of Commerce honored him with its Volunteer of the Year award. The Waldorf Boosters Club honored him as Super Fan of the Year for the 2006-07 academic year. Arlo was a life member of the Heritage Park in Forest City and helped with its construction during the park's early years.

Arlo became a member of the United Methodist Church in Forest City in 1945 and served on various church committees and boards during most of these years. He was one of the original organizers of the Foundation Board.

Arlo is survived by his twin sons, Ronald of Ames and Robert (Maggie) of Springfield, Illinois; granddaughters, Cassandra (Jeremy) Cox of Raleigh, North Carolina, Emily of Springfield, Illinois, Chloe of Ames and Sara of San Diego, California.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and sister, Veneta Hollett.

Darlene B. Hanna, 75

August 18, 2009

Darlene B. Hanna, age 75, of Forest City, died on Thursday, August 13, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 17, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City, with Rev. Kevin Olson, pastor of Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church in Joice, officiating. Burial was in the Grant Township Cemetery in Woden. Visitation was held on Sunday, August 16, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and an hour prior to the services at the church.

Darlene B. Hanna, was born at the Beadle House in Hancock County, southeast of Forest City, Iowa on September 1, 1933, the daughter of Osmund and Bessie (Olson) Torkelson. She attended country school until the seventh grade, when she began school in Forest City, graduating from the Forest City High School in 1951. On October 15, 1952, she was united in marriage to Marvin Hanna at the Beadle House. Darlene helped Marvin on the farm and raised her children. She worked at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City for more than 20 years. In 1962, she accepted Christ as her personal savior.

Darlene loved to garden and was a talented seamstress. She enjoyed quilting and could patch-up blue jeans like new. She and Marvin liked to share fresh donuts with their neighbors. Darlene wanted her whole family in Heaven with her. She was the family “prayer warrior” - always caring more for others than herself.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin of Forest City; five children, Daryl (Cindy) Hanna of Forest City, Gloria (Mike) Gruis of Forest City, Bernal (Kathy) Hanna of Forest City, Eileen (Dean) Holland of Buffalo Center and Janelle (Jay) Erdman of Duncan; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Orrin (Marian) Torkelson of Forest City; three sisters, Thelma Sunde and Julaine Albertson, both of Forest City and Louise Jermeland of Mason City; and two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Torkelson and Linda Kesler, both of Forest City.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and five brothers.

Terry E. Hagen, 53

August 18, 2009

Terry E. Hagen, age 53, of Garner, died on Thursday, August 13, 2009, as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in rural Garner.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, Augudy 18, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City, with Pastor Eric Weaver officiating. Burial was in the Ellington Township Cemetery in rural Forest City. Visitation was held on Monday, August 17, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and an hour prior to the services at the church.

Terry E. Hagen, was born on January 17, 1956 in Mason City, the son of Ray and Lavonne (Jenson) Hagen. He received his elementary education in Hanlontown and graduated from the Forest City High School. On July 6, 1982, he was united in marriage to Dawn Anderson in Mason City. Terry attended Waldorf College and finished his four-year degree at Wartburg, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a double major in business and economics. He worked in the Accounting Department at Winnebago Industries for six years. He then pursued a law degree at the University of South Dakota and graduated with a Juris Doctorate degree. He then continued his employment at Winnebago as a corporate lawyer until the present.

He had a love for motorcycles and collecting old John Deere tractors and treasured time spent with his parents and family.

Terry is survived by his wife of 27 years, Dawn; two children, Jeremiah, 18 and Justin, 14; his parents, Ray and Lavonne Hagen; mother-in-law, Doris Anderson; brother, Ron (Becky) Hagen of Forest City; sister, Melissa (Doug) Knudtson of Worthington, Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Mike (Patti) Anderson of Chandler, Arizona and Mark (Chris) Anderson of Fertile; and sister-in-law, Deb Anderson of Phoenix, Arizona; and by many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Robert Anderson; and grandparents.

Charles R. Franklin, 91

August 25, 2009

Charles R. Franklin, 91, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at his home in rural Forest City.

As per his wishes, his body has been cremated and there will be no visitation. A memorial service was held on Monday, August 24, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Miller, Iowa, with Lay Pastor Rose Visser officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ellington Township Cemetery in rural Forest City. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Arlin L. Zingg, 85

August 25, 2009

Arlin L. Zingg, age 85, of Leland, died on Friday, August 21, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, August 26, at the Center Lutheran Church in rural Scarville. Burial will be in the West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery in rural Leland, with graveside military rites by the Forest City American Legion Post 121. Visitation was held from 4-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, August 25, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City and an hour prior to the services at the church.

Arlin L. Zingg, was born on a farm near Leland on July 20, 1924, the son of Grover and Helen (Peterson) Zingg. He attended rural school near his home and graduated from the Leland High School in 1942. Arlin served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to the area. He began farming with his brother, Dale in 1948. On April 16, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ruth Okland at the Center Lutheran Church. The couple lived on the Peterson home place near Leland, the family farm since 1884. Arlin loved farming and treasured every day he could be out working.

Arlin was a pilot and enjoyed flying his Piper Super Cruiser on short trips visiting friends and to attend flight breakfasts. He liked to golf and spend time with his golfing buddies. Arlin was a meticulous woodworker, building pieces with an eye for perfect form and finish.

He was a member of the Center Lutheran Church, where he had served as Treasurer and a member of the American Legion Post 121 of Forest City.

Arlin is survived by his wife, Ruth; his brother, Dale; three sisters, Arleen Sorenson, Mavis Holt and Ruth Charleson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joseph “Joe” Frank Korsa, 73

August 25, 2009

Joseph “Joe” Frank Korsa, 73, of Crystal Lake, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 26, at 1:30 p.m., at the Evangelical Free Church in Britt, with Pastor Jason Boomgarden officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m., on Wednesday, in the Crystal Lake Cemetery. Visitation was held on Tuesday, August 25, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and continued one hour prior to the service at the church.

Joe, the son of Edmund and Bessie (Volf) Korsa was born on January 6, 1936 in Fort Dodge, Iowa.  At a young age Joe moved with his family to the Crystal Lake area. Joe attended country school and graduated from the Hayfield High School in 1953. Following graduation, Joe went to an Auto Mechanic School in Chicago. Joe served his country with the Army for two years beginning in 1956 and was honorably discharged. 

Joe was united in marriage with Josine Benson on May 5, 1959. The couple made their home in the Forest City area. He opened a garage in Crystal Lake, which he ran for a short time, he then worked for Winnebago Industries in Forest City. Joe was employed by Hancock County for 25 years, in road maintenance. After retirement he was employed for the city of Crystal Lake for ten years.

Joe was a member of the Upper Flat Evangelical Free Church, where he served as an usher and trustee. He was a member of the Z.C.B.J. Fraternal Association for over 50 years. Joe served on the Crystal Lake Town Council and was a fireman and served as Chief for a short time. Joe and Josine loved to travel and attended numerous fairs through out the years.

Joe is survived by his wife of 50 years, Josine; two sons, Jeff (Laura) Korsa of Crystal Lake and Jim (Angie) Korsa of Lakeville, Minnesota; six beloved grandchildren, Kasey, Caleb, Michaela, Allie, Tyler and Trevor; two brothers, Bob (Myrna) Korsa of Franktown, Colorado and Bernie (Sandie) Korsa of Garner; one sister, Fran (Al) Tvedt of Fair Grove, Missouri; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Clarine Boyken, 92

August 25, 2009

Clarine Boyken, died on Sunday, August 23, 2009, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.  She was 92.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 27, from 4-7:00 p.m., at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Titonka. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 28, at 10:30 a.m., at the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Titonka, with Reverends Tom Hunt, Herbert Hanson and Wayne Garman officiating. Burial will be in the Good Hope Cemetery.

Clarine was born on July 31, 1917 in Ellsworth, Iowa, the daughter of Jesse and Mathilda (Ringstad) Johnson. In her early years, she went to the Spring Valley Country School and later attended the Ellsworth High School, graduating in 1934. After high school, Clarine enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa), graduating in 1936. She taught for three years at the Titonka Consolidated School before she married. On June 28, 1939, Clarine was united in marriage to Edward Boyken at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. The couple lived in Titonka, where Ed worked at the Titonka Savings Bank and Clarine was very active in the community and church.

Clarine served on the Library Board for 22 years, serving as Chairwoman and later as a District Chairwoman in the Iowa Library Association.  Along with her husband, Clarine was instrumental in finding a building for the library. Since education was a high priority for Clarine, she developed a story hour program and worked to increase the services the library could provide. She was also very active in the Women's Federated Club, organized and wrote copy for a community brochure, spearheaded the organization of the Community Betterment Council on which she served as an officer and was very involved with the organization of three annual community fundraisers. She was recognized by Governor Terry Branstad with the Distinguished Citizen Award in 1989.

She also put in many hours raising funds and securing grants for numerous projects around Titonka, such as the restrooms at the park, the purchase of a vacant building to house the Community Center and building and street improvements. Clarine also helped originate the Community Improvement Fund, overseen by the town, which is used for betterment projects. She helped develop a Titonka Tourism Brochure and was an active member of the Parent Teachers Association.

Clarine enjoyed writing and has written or helped compile four different books: Whistle and a Spur, a diamond jubilee history of Titonka, published in 1973; Echoes of Spring Valley, about rural school of yesteryear, published in 1978; Hey, Grandma, a guide to helping children succeed in school, published in 1990; and The Whistle Blows at Noon, a centennial history of Titonka, published in 1998. She also enjoyed oil painting and traveling to their lake home, known to the family as Penbjork on Deep Portage Lake, in Minnesota. She was a very active member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, choir member, member of numerous different committees and served as the State Conference Chairperson of the American Lutheran Church Women.

Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Edward Boyken of Titonka; five sons, Allan and Joy Boyken of Titonka, Jeffrey and Carolyn Boyken of Viera, Florida, Mark and Barbra Boyken of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, Karl and Diane Boyken of Iowa City, Iowa and Quentin and Inez Boyken of West Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Aaron, Marshall, Lucas, Wade, Grant, Jon, Steven, Frances, Edward, Scott and Eric; 12 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson of Ames; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Merlin and Curtis Johnson.

Gary L. Bridger, 65

Gary L. Bridger, 65, of Clarion, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2009, in Clarion.

Memorial services were held on Friday, September 4, at the United Presbyterian Church in Clarion, with Pastor Bill Kem officiating. Visitation was held on Thursday, September 3, at the Ewing Funeral Home in Clarion and continued one hour prior to the services at the church.

Gary Lee Bridger, son of Raymond and Onetah (Schrader) Bridger, was born on November 11, 1943 in Griswold. He was raised in Griswold, attending school and graduating from the Griswold High School in 1962. On October 26, 1963, Gary was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Davis in Papillion, Nebraska. The couple lived in Griswold, Harlan and numerous other towns: Ida Grove operating a flower and gift shop; Forest City operating a greenhouse and flower shop; Webster City operating a gift and flower shop; and finally returning to operate Theo's Gift Shop in Atlantic.

After Marilyn passed away on March 29, 1998, Gary started a few more gift shops with the last one being located in Clarion with his daughter, Angie.

Gary was baptized and confirmed at the St. John Evangelical Reformed Church in Lyman. He was also a member of the Iowa Society of Florists. Gary loved spending time with his family and friends especially his grandson, Kyle. He enjoyed watching sports and was a huge Atlanta Braves fan.

Gary is survived by his mother, Onetah Bridger of Griswold; his daughter, Angie Frink and Mike Marshall of Clarion; grandson, Kyle Frink and his girlfriend, Josie Torres Duran of Clarion; sister, Gloria Younkin and her husband, Bill of Torrance, California; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; father, Raymond; sister, Jadene Rudig; two infant brothers; and his grandparents.
