Genevieve Opal
Heins, age 94, of Riceville,
Iowa, passed away on Tuesday,
March 1, 2005, at the Riceville
Community Rest Home.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, March 4, at
the St. Peter's Lutheran Church
in Riceville, with Reverend
Michael Parris officiating.
Burial was in the Riverside
Cemetery in Riceville.
Genevieve was
born in Hampton, Iowa, on
September 19, 1910, to Franklin
and Pearl (Blain) Foughty. She
attended Hampton Schools. She
was united in marriage to Harry
Louis Heins on October 15, 1927,
at the Methodist Parsonage in
Mason City, Iowa. She enjoyed 76
years of married life. Harry and
Genevieve started farming in
1929.
Gen and Harry
were devoted members of the St.
Peter's Lutheran Church in
Riceville since 1937, where Gen
taught Sunday School and Bible
classes for many years. She and
her daughter, Barbara started
the Flowerette club in 1952
raising over 500 different
variety of Iris, which were
admired by many, and the club
continues to this day. Gen also
raised all kinds of daylilies.
Gen's generosity was shown in
the church, sponsoring a child
in Mexico and contributing to
the translation of the Bible
from English to Indian for a
mission in the Canadian
northwest.
She is survived
by her children and their
spouses, Lois and Bob Thompto of
Manly, Iowa, Wayne and Ardith
Heins of Cedar Falls, Iowa,
Barbara and Delmar Austinson of
Osage, Iowa and Harry, Jr. and
Jeannie Heins of Waterloo, Iowa;
11 grandchildren; 17
great-grandchildren; and seven
great-great-grandchildren.
Genevieve left us
to be with the Lord and her
parents; her beloved husband,
Harry who passed away in 2003;
three brothers, Blain, Gerald
"Chub" and Verald "Bob" Foughty;
and an infant sister.

Steven Curtis
Foster, age 55, of Riceville,
Iowa, passed away on Tuesday,
March 1, 2005, at the St. Mary's
Hospital in Rochester,
Minnesota, from injuries
received in a car accident.
Funeral services
were held at the Riceville High
School Gymnasium on Saturday,
March 5, 2005. Reverend Michael
Carey and Reverend Dan
Christensen officiated. Burial
was in the Riverside Cemetery,
with military honors conducted
by the American Legion Roy Gue
Post of Riceville.
Steven was born
on February 21, 1950 in
Riceville, Iowa, to Curtis and
Mary (Aspel) Foster. He attended
Riceville Schools and upon
graduation attended two years of
trade school at Calmar. Steven
served his country in the U.S.
Army during the Vietnam War. He
was united in marriage to
Deborah Huisman on September 16,
1978, at the St. Ansgar
Methodist Church. Steven worked
for the Riceville Community
Schools in maintenance and as a
custodian.
Steven's
survivors include his wife, Deb;
daughter, Terri of Riceville;
his mother, Mary of Riceville;
two brothers, Mark of Elma and
Greg of Riceville; two sisters,
Mrs. Roger (Karen) Owens of
Tripoli, Iowa and Mrs. Roger
Lynne Derry of New Hampton; and
special family, Alicia and
Nathan Kinter of Riceville.
He was preceded
in death by his father, Curtis
in 1986; grandparents; and an
uncle, Jim Aspel.

Allison "Jack" Miles
March 8, 2005
Jack Miles, age
96, of Osage, died on Wednesday,
March 2, 2005, at the Faith
Lutheran Home in Osage.
According to his
wishes, his body was cremated.
Private graveside services will
be held in the Saratoga Township
Cemetery in Saratoga, Iowa.
Jack was born on
December 15, 1908 near Saratoga,
Iowa, the son of John and Elsie
May (Watson) Miles. Jack was
married to Vera Louise Bernett
on March 31, 1930. Their married
life was spent farming in the
Riceville Community. The family
business was breeding and
showing award winning Black
Angus cattle that he prized.
He loved singing
and dancing anytime. Vera died
on May 18, 1969. Jack retired
and married Pearl Bublitz
Urbatsch on April 23, 1977. They
made their home in Osage. Pearl
died on September 24, 2004.
Jack was preceded
in death by his parents; his
first wife, Vera Miles; and his
second wife, Pearl Urbatsch
Miles.
Jack is survived
by his daughter, Myrna Garrison
and husband, Richard of Santa
Paula, California; two
granddaughters, Cheryl McGhee
and husband, Donald of Boulder
City, Nevada and Carole Alary
and husband, Stephen of Ventura,
California; five
great-grandchildren, Paul and
Miles Alary, Bonnie and James
McGhee, Jennie Burns and
husband, Ben; two
great-great-grandchildren, Kayla
and McKenzie Burns; two
stepsons, Gene Urbatsch and
wife, Penny of Post Falls, Idaho
and James Urbatsch and wife,
Delores of Osage; five
step-grandchildren, Jamie Smith
and husband, Andy, Jodee

Ellen Genevieve
Schrage, age 98, of Osage,
peacefully entered into eternal
rest on Wednesday, March 2,
2005, at the Good Samaritan
Center in St. Ansgar.
A
Mass of Christian Burial was
held on Monday, March 7, at the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Osage, with Rev. Mark Reasoner
officiating. Burial was in the
Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery
in Osage.
Ellen was born on
June 20, 1906 in Floyd County,
to Matt and Catherine (Kohlhaas)
Frascht. She graduated from the
Charles City High School and
Teacher's Training at UNI. After
graduation, she taught school in
a one room country school near
her home. Ellen married Chriss
Schrage on January 12, 1929 in
Roseville, Iowa. To this union,
6 children were born. Chriss and
Ellen farmed for 47 years until
Chriss passed away in 1976.
She was active in
4-H and her children's school
projects. Ellen loved to
crochet, making quilts and
knitting mittens and hats for
everyone who needed them. She
was active at the Senior Citizen
Center after she moved to Osage
in 1976. She lived in Osage
until she entered the Good
Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar
in 1998.
Left to cherish
her memory are her children,
Eugene Schrage of McIntire,
Kathleen (Bill) Cohn of Mission,
Texas, Maria Diggle of San
Bernardino, California, Pat
(Frank) Kraft of Big Fork,
Montanda, Leon (Carol) Schrage
of Iowa City and Veronica (Dean)

great-grandchildren; and five
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her husband, Chriss;
her parents; five brothers, Leo,
Bernard, Joseph, Louis and Bert

and a great-grandson, Nicholas
Elliott.

Helen Reynolds

Helen Reynolds,
age 92, of Stacyville, died on
Thursday, March 3, 2005, at the
Stacyville Community Nursing
Home.
A
Mass of Christian
Burial was held on Saturday,
March 5, at the Visitation
Catholic Church in Stacyville,
with Rev. Mark Reasoner
officiating. Burial was in the
Visitation Cemetery in
Stacyville.
Helen was born on
August 19, 1912 in Stacyville,
the daughter of William and Amy
(Kinney) Pitzen. She graduated
from the old Visitation High
School in 1930 and then attended
the College of St. Catherine in
St. Paul. After the premature
death of her father in a hunting
accident, she and her mother
moved to Wisconsin, where her
married sister was living. Helen
then attended the Business
College in Milwaukee, after
which she was employed in a
General Motors Office in
Janesville, Wisconsin for
several years.
It was here that
she met her husband, Jim. They
were married on February 18,
1939 and had been happily
together for 63 years when Jim
passed away in August of 2002.
When World War II broke out, Jim
was transferred to a plant in
Bay City, Michigan, where they
lived for five years. Following
a year in Flint, Michigan, they
moved to Milwaukee, where they
spent the next 24 years. While
living in Milwaukee, Helen was
employed for 11 years at the
First Wisconsin National Bank.
Helen loved music
and was an excellent pianist.
Her hobbies included playing
bridge and working crossword
puzzles. After retirement, she
and Jim lived in several places,
including Roswell, New Mexico
and Bellevue, Nebraska, before
retiring to Stacyville in the
fall of 1988.
Helen is survived
by her son, William Reynolds of
Chicago, Illinois; a niece,
Susan Olson-Mandler; and a
nephew, Fred Pospeschil.
Helen was
preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Jim
Reynolds; and a sister, Alice
Pospeschil.
The

Joan Chisholm Cole
March 8, 2005
Joan Chisholm
Cole, 72, of Coon Rapids,
Minnesota and formerly of the
Osage area, died on Friday,
March 4, 2005, at the Unity
Hospital in Fridley, Minnesota,
following complications from
surgery for cancer.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, March 7, at
the Sacred Heart Catholic Church
in Osage, with Rev. Mark
Reasoner officiating. Burial was
in the Sacred Heart Cemetery,
Osage.
Joan was born on
December 23, 1932 in Osage, the
daughter of Daniel and Rose
(Weinberger) Chisholm. She
attended schools in Mitchell and
graduated from the Mitchell High
School. She lived in Mason City
and Manly before moving to the
Coon Rapids area. Joan was first
united in marriage to George
Froning and then to Bob Cole,
who both preceded her in death.
She had worked at Kurt
Manufacturing in Coon Rapids and
later made her home with her
sister, Kay Sloan and husband,
Del. Joan and Kay both worked
for Covenant Home Services,
dealing with Foster care.
She is survived
by three brothers, Leo (Elsie)
Chisholm of Osage, Lawrence
(Shari) Chisholm of White Bear
Lake, Minnesota and Daniel
(Cathy) Chisholm of Mason City;
a brother-in-law, Delbert Sloan
of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; two
sisters-in-law, Inge Chisholm of
Severna Park, Maryland and
Barbara Halladay of Osage; an
uncle and aunt, Lawrence and
Dolores Weinberger of Osage; and
several nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded
in death by her parents; two
husbands; two infant children,
Douglas and Debra Froning; two
sisters, Mercedes Bredehoft and
Kay Sloan; and two brothers,
Robert and James Chisholm.

Jane Elizabeth Pitzen

Jane Elizabeth
Pitzen, age 63, of Stacyville,
entered into the gates of heaven
on Saturday, March 5, 2005, at
the Methodist Hospital in
Rochester, Minnesota, after a
courageous two year battle with
acute leukemia.
A
Mass of Christian
Burial was held on Tuesday,
March 8, at the Visitation
Catholic Church in Stacyville,
with Rev. Mark Reasoner
officiating. Burial was in the
Visitation Catholic Cemetery in
Stacyville.
Jane was born on
August 21, 1941 in Elma, Iowa,
the daughter of Victor and Rose
(Komarak) Praska. She graduated
from the St. William's High
School in Alta Vista, Iowa and
attended Hamilton Business
College in Mason City. On
November 23, 1961, she was
united in marriage to Gene
Robert Pitzen at the St.
Bernard's Catholic Church in
Alta Vista. Jane worked as a
secretary in Ames as a newlywed,
before becoming a full time mom
and working part time at the
Stacyville Nursing Home. She
later worked at the Austin Vet
Clinic after Gene and Jane
dispersed their dairy herd.
Jane's greatest
joys were her six children and
11 grandchildren. She also
greatly enjoyed her pet
companion, Nutmeg. She attended
countless school plays,
musicals, and sporting events.
She loved traveling, family
camping trips, cooking,
gardening and baking pies and
treats for her family. Jane
enjoyed conversation with her
family and friends. Jane was a
member of the Visitation
Catholic Church, past Northwest
Country Circle Leader, member of
the Catholic Order of Foresters
and a member of the Mitchell
County Dairy Promotion Group.
Survivors are her
husband, Gene Pitzen of
Stacyville; her children, Julie
Niess and her husband, Scott of
Osage and their children, Cody
and Cally; Randy Pitzen and his
wife, Janet of Adams, Minnesota
and their children, Adam,
Jessica and Alex; Jeff Pitzen
and his wife, Carmen of Kasson,
Minnesota and their children,
Danielle and Rachel; Rick Pitzen
and his wife, Teri of Dubuque
and their children, Deidre and
Lucas; Lori Ishman of Floyd and
her children, Tyler and Taylor;
and Ryan Pitzen at home; one
brother, Donald Praska and his
wife, Karen of Charles City; and
her mother-in-law, Mary Pitzen
of Stacyville.
Jane was preceded
in death by her mother and
father, Rose and Victor Praska.

Frank R. Pitra
March 15, 2005
Frank R. Pitra,
age 94, of Osage, passed away on
Sunday, March 6, 2005, at the
Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
According to
Frank's wishes, his body was
cremated. Graveside inurnment
services will be held at 11:00
a.m., on Saturday, March 19, at
the Sacred Heart Catholic
Cemetery in Osage, with Rev.
Mark Reasoner officiating.
Military honors at the grave
will be by the Osage American
Legion Post 278.
Frank Pitra, was
born on June 11, 1910 at
Bordulac, North Dakota, the son
of Czech immigrants, Joseph and
Amelia (Popelka) Pitra, who
farmed in the area. Frank moved
to Osage in 1937. He spent most
of his days in Iowa doing
construction work. Frank served
in the Army Air Corps during
World War II, mainly in the
European areas.
Frank was a long
time member of the Osage
American Legion Post 278 and the
Osage VFW Post 7920. Frank
enjoyed playing cards with
friends, especially the game of
cribbage.
Frank is survived
by two sisters, Stacia Balsley
of Lehigh Acres, Florida and
Marjorie (Clarence) Brumm of
Osage; local Osage nephew,
Richard (Karen) Brumm and
family; and other numerous
nieces and nephews out of state.
Frank was
preceded in death by his
parents, Joseph and Amelia; his
three sisters, Annie Riemers,
Mary Fait and Antionette Gorski;
his three brothers, Joseph
Pitra, Bert Pitra and Stanley
Pitra; and one local nephew,
Joey Brumm.
The

Mabel H. Sawyer

Mabel H. Sawyer,
age 89, of Osage, went to be
with the Lord on Monday, March
7, 2005, at the Osage
Rehabilitation and Health Care
Center.
Memorial services
were held on Friday, March 11,
at the Christian & Missionary
Alliance Church in Osage, with
Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating.
Private family burial was in the
Osage Cemetery.
Mabel was born on
October 31, 1915 in rural
Winnebago County, to Carl and
Inga (Thorson) Olson. She
graduated from the Commerce High
School in Detroit, Michigan.
Mabel married Harold R. Sawyer
on November 5, 1939 in Osage,
Iowa. To this union two children
were born. Harold passed away in
1977.
Mabel was a long
time member of the Christian &
Missionary Alliance Church of
Osage.
Left to cherish
her memory are her children,
Jerry R. (Marcia) Sawyer of
Plano, Texas and Sandy K. (Gary)
Gilbert of Osage; four
grandchildren, Michele (Len)
Shultz, Mindy (Jimmy) Schreiber,
Brian (Lynette) Gilbert and

great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her husband, Harold;

Noah Daniel
Graves, 17 month old son of Mark
and Betty Graves of Mason City,
died on Friday, March 11, 2005,
at home.
Funeral services
were held at 1:30 p.m., on
Monday, at the Rolling Acres
Christian Reformed Church, Mason
City, with Rev. Jack Van den
Heuvel and Rev. Thomas Healey
officiating. Burial was in the
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason
City.
Noah Daniel
Graves, was born on October 5,
2003 at the Mercy Hospital in
Des Moines, a son of Mark and
Betty (Oudekerk) Graves. Noah
enjoyed listening to music,
playing with his big brother
Jacob, the friendship of his dog
Buster and he especially enjoyed
being held and loved by his
parents, family and friends.
He is survived by
his parents, Mark and Betty
Graves of Mason City; brother,
Jacob Graves; paternal
grandmother, Judy Graves of
Phoenix, Arizona; maternal
grandfather, Albert Oudekerk of
Mason City; uncle, Keith (Barb)

Russell Thorsen
March 23, 2005
Russell Thorsen,
age 73, of Rockford, Illinois,
went home to be with his Lord on
Friday, March 11, 2005, after he
lost a courageous battle with a
brain tumor.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, March 14,
at the Fred C. Olson Funeral
Chapels, Ltd., East Chapel,
Rockford, Illinois. Rev. Charles
Sensel officiated and interment
was in the Scandinavian Cemetery
in Rockford.
Russell was born
on March 25, 1931 in Osage, the
son of Clarence and Olga (Havig)
Thorsen. He married Sonia Evans
on December 4, 1954 in
Knoxville, Tennessee. He was
employed as an associate
engineer for Sundstrand for 23
years, retiring in 1990. He
proudly served his country in
the U.S. Air Force during the
Korean War.
Survivors include
his wife, Sonia; two sons, Mike
and Doug Thorsen; and one
daughter, Lori Siner, all of
Rockford, Illinois; one beloved
grandson, Shane Siner of
Rockford, Illinois; and a
brother and his wife, Hub and
Wanda Thorsen of Osage.
Preceding him in
death was one daughter, Deborah
Thorsen; his parents; one
brother; and two sisters.

Russell E. Sprung
March 15, 2005
Russell Earl
Sprung, age 79, of Osage, died
on Saturday, March 12, 2005, at
the Faith Lutheran Home, Osage.
Funeral services
were held at 1:00 p.m., on
Tuesday, March 15, at the Little
Cedar United Methodist Church,
with Rev. Jay Amundson and Lay
Minister Gary Gilbert
officiating. Burial was in the
Little Cedar Cemetery.
Russell was born
on February 4, 1926 in Jenkins
Township, Mitchell County, the
son of Fred and Dorothy
(Milbrandt) Sprung. He attended
country school through eighth
grade and graduated from the
Riceville High School. After
graduation, he enlisted in the
Army Air Force in September
1943, and served as an Airplane
Armorer Gunner. He was
discharged in May 1946.
Returning to Osage he was
employed by Oliver manufacturing
Co. in Charles City until he
started farming near McIntire.
He farmed most of his life near
Little Cedar. Russell was united
in marriage to Della Johnson,
daughter of Oscar and Myra
(McPhail) Johnson on March 24,
1951, at the Little Cedar United
Methodist church. To this union
three children were born,
Cheryl, Marilyn and Alan.
He was an active
member of the NFO in which he
served in county and regional
offices. He was a member of the
American Legion, Little Cedar
Elevator Board and Little Cedar
United Methodist Church Board.
Russell is
survived by his wife, Della; two
daughters, Cheryl (Gary) Pearson
of Riceville and Marilyn
(Robert) Waldschmidt of
Waterville, Minnesota; a son,
Alan Sprung of Osage; five
grandchildren; one
great-granddaughter; a sister,
Dorothy Foster of Davenport; a
brother, Fred (Sylvia) Sprung of
LaMoille, Illinois; and many
nieces and nephews.
Russell was
preceded in death by his
parents; a sister, Ione Markham;
and two brothers, Kenneth and
Robert Sprung.
Funeral

Ralph B. Michels
March 15, 2005
Ralph B. Michels,
age 81, of Stacyville, died on
Saturday, March 12, 2005, at
home.
A Funeral Mass
will be celebrated at 10:30
a.m., on Wednesday, March 16, at
the Visitation Church in
Stacyville, with Father Mark
Reasoner officiating. Rosary was
at 4:30 p.m. and a Wake Service
at 7:00 p.m., at the Visitation
Church on Tuesday, March 15th.
Interment will be in the
Visitation Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers the family encourages
that Memorials be made to your
preferred charity.
Ralph was born on
the family farm near Stacyville,
to Anton and Margaret (Hemann)
Michels. Ralph graduated from
the Visitation High School in
Stacyville and then worked on
the family farm until entering
the Army in 1945. He was married
to Marjorie Werner in 1945 and
after discharge from the Army
they started farming near
Stacyville. The couple raised
nine children on their dairy
farm.
He was active in
4-H leadership and showing
cattle all the while he farmed.
In 1970, he started a second
career as a Farm Bureau
Insurance Underwriter while
continuing to farm. He retired
from Farm Bureau in 1986. In
retirement, Ralph was active in
raising, training, and parading
Draft Horses, playing golf, and
traveling.
Ralph is survived
by his wife of 60 years,
Marjorie (Werner) of Stacyville;
children, Russ Michels and wife,
Diane (Tue) of Ft. Collins,
Colorado and their children,
Lisa Michels and her husband,
Scott Stengaard and Melissa and
her husband, Jake Emanual;
Norman Michels and wife, Marcia
(Wilcox) of Lakewood, Colorado
and their children, Tyler and
Mikayla; Mark Michels and wife,
Dianna (Dahms) of New Prague,
Minnesota; Loren (Joe) Michels
and wife, Mary Ann (Nedved) of

Martha Marie
Arndt, was born on June 19, 1933
in Riceville, to Cecil Edwin and
Edna Hilda Ehrenstein Foote. She
attended local schools. In
December of 1950 she was united
in marriage to Joseph Roethler
in New Haven, Iowa. To this
union a son was born, Michael
Joseph Roethler.
She was a member
of the St. Peter's Lutheran
Church in Riceville. She was
united in marriage to Edward
Emil Arndt at the St. Peter's
Lutheran Church on March 2,
1963.
Martha was
preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Edwin in
1994; one stepson; one brother;
and one sister.
Her survivors
include her son, Michael
Roethler and his wife, Barb of
Waterloo, Iowa; grandson, Chad
Roethler and his wife, Julie and
their two children, Hannah and
Nolan; one granddaughter, Jodi
Driscoll and her husband, David
and their child, Colin; three
great-grandchildren; a stepson,
James Arndt of Charles City; and
two stepdaughters, Avis Ann and
her husband, Leonard Jareett and
Margaret Ann and her husband,
Dale Brockney, all of Charles
City, Iowa; three
step-grandchildren; a sister,
Wilma Thurnau Fickess and her
husband, Robert of Osage, Iowa;
and many nieces and nephews.

Ruby Hvattum
Tebben, age 96, of Fruita,
Colorado and formerly of Osage,
died on Sunday, March 13, 2005,
in Fruita.
Graveside
services will be held at 10:00
a.m., on Wednesday, March 16, at
the Osage Cemetery, with the
Rev. Roy Ott officiating.
Ruby was born on
July 26, 1909 in Osage, the
daughter of Paul and Sophia
(Amundrud) Hvattum. She
graduated from the Osage High
School and St. Olaf College in
North Field, Minnesota. In 1941,
Ruby was the first female
accepted in graduate school at
the California Institute of
Technology. She married Jurgen
Tebben. They farmed in the area
until 1952.
Ruby is survived
by two sons, Ronald Tebben of
Berkeley Springs, West Virginia
and Gerald Tebben of Elk Horn,
Wisconsin; a daughter, Marlys
Barrick of San Diego,
California; nine grandchildren;
20 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
Ruby was preceded
in death by her parents; and
husband, Jurgen Tebben in 1982.
The

Elsie Nuehring

Elsie Nuehring,
age 76, of Osage, died on
Monday, March 14, 2005, at the
Mitchell County Regional Health
Center-Hospice Unit in Osage.
Funeral services
were held on Thursday, March 17,
at the Eden Presbyterian Church,
rural Rudd, with Rev. John Bates
officiating. Burial was in the
Eden Presbyterian Cemetery.
Elsie was born on
July 29, 1928 in Belmond, Iowa,
the daughter of Tim and Meta
(Fastenau) Gerdes. She was
baptized on November 4, 1928, at
the Emmanuel Reformed Church in
Belmond. Elsie graduated from
the Klemme High School in 1945.
She was united in marriage to
Dean Nuehring at the Emmanuel
Reformed Church in Klemme on
February 24, 1948. Prior to her
marriage, Elsie had been
employed at a grocery store in
Goodell.
She was an active
member of the Eden Presbyterian
Church. Elsie was an avid sports
fan, loved to sew and quilt,
played cards, helped with
gardening and enjoyed canning
fruits and vegetables. Elsie was
well known for the pies that she
loved to bake.
She is survived
by her husband, Dean Nuehring of
Osage; six daughters, Avon
(Jerry) Rurup of Titonka and
children, Jodi and Jeremy; Donna
(Marloe) Ellingson of Joice and
children, Karen (Brian) Ahrens
and twins, Emily and Tyler,
Jennifer (Randy) Hall and
daughter, Kimberly and Dean
Ellingson; Nancy (Neal) Hirota
of Osage and children, Nicole,
Natalie, Nicholas and Nolan;
Janet (Gerard) May of Osage and
sons, Jonathan and Jeffrey;

Rose Rauen, age
86, of Stacyville, died on
Thursday, March 17, 2005, at the
Stacyville Community Nursing
Home.

21, at the Visitation Catholic
Church in Stacyville, with Rev.
Mark Reasoner officiating.
Burial was in the Visitation
Cemetery in Stacyville.
Rose was born on
June 2, 1918 in St. Ansgar, the
daughter of George Sr. and
Therese (Biederer) Firsching.
She attended the Visitation
Catholic School in Stacyville.
Rose was united in marriage to
Arthur Rauen on December 30,
1941, at the Visitation Catholic
Church in Stacyville. She was
employed at the Stacyville
Nursing Home for 17 years,
retiring in 1984. During her
nine year stay at the Stacyville
Nursing Home she developed many
friends amongst the staff and
residents.
Rose was a member
of the Christian Mothers and a
member of the Visitation
Catholic Circle. She was an avid
reader and enjoyed playing cards
with relatives and friends.
To cherish her
memory includes three daughters,
Dorothy (Nathan) Mullenbach of
Adams, Minnesota, Marilyn
(Larry) Motzer of Eau Claire,
Wisconsin and Ruth Jones of
Chicago, Illinois; one son, Gene
(Marcia) Rauen of Austin,
Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; 21
great-grandchildren; 1
great-great-granddaughter; four

Emma McInroy, 92,
of Osage and formerly of the
Riceville area, died on
Saturday, March 19, 2005, at the
Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles
City.
Funeral services
will be held at 10:30 a.m., on
Wednesday, March 23, at the St.
Peter's Lutheran Church in
Riceville, with Pastor Michael
Parris officiating. Interment
will be in the Riverside
Cemetery in Riceville.
Visitation is from 6-8:00 p.m.,
on Tuesday, at the
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in
Osage and will continue one hour
before the services at the
church on Wednesday.
Emma was born on
February 24, 1913 near Elma, the
daughter of Hugo and Helen
(DeVries) Horstman. Emma worked
as a hired girl for area
farmers. She was united in
marriage to Carl McInroy on
August 26, 1932. They farmed and
made their home in the Riceville
area until retiring in 1973 and
then they moved to Osage. They
enjoyed going to dances. Carl
passed away in 1983. In 1988
Emma was united in marriage to
Charles Hoye. Charles passed
away in 2003. Emma enjoyed
gardening and her many family
and friends.
She is survived
by four sons, Keith (Gayle)
McInroy of Charles City, Orville
(Lisa) McInroy of Robins, James
(Marilyn) McInroy of Cedar
Rapids and Jerry (Jane) McInroy
of Cedar Rapids; a sister,
Lillie Louvar of Cedar Rapids;
15 grandchildren; 30
great-grandchildren; and four
great-great-grandchildren.
Emma was preceded
in death by her parents; her two
husbands, Carl and Charles;
three sisters; and two brothers.

Harold J. (Harry) Kramer
March 30, 2005
Harold J. Kramer,
of rural Adams, died on Tuesday,
March 22, 2005, with courage and
dignity, surrounded by his
loving family, in the same
farmhouse where he was born 73
years ago.
A
Funeral Mass was
held on Monday, March 28, at the
St. John's Catholic Church of
Johnsburg. Memorials preferred
to the Sacred Heart School of
Adams or the American Cancer
Society.
Harry was the
third generation of a strong
family which raised cattle and
farmed corn for more than 125
years along the Minnesota-Iowa
state line. He loved a party and
loved people. The Kramer
hospitality was well known
throughout southern Minnesota
and northern Iowa, especially
during sweet corn season.
Nothing pleased Harry more than
visiting with family, friends
and neighbors. Besides farming,
Harry was a longtime DeKalb
Dealer and a real estate
salesman for Spartz Realty. He
attended school at the District
71 Country School, Johnsburg and
the Sacred Heart Parochial
Schools and the Adams High
School, where he graduated in
1949. He was a natural athlete,
but enjoyed baseball best and
played second base and shortstop
for the Johnsburg town team from
1946 to 1965.
Harry was a
spiritual man who contributed
greatly to his church and
community. He was a mass lector
at the St. John's Catholic
Church. Twice he was grand
knight of the Knights of
Columbus. He was president of
the Mower County Cattleman's
Association, a founding leader
of the Johnsburg Country Aces
4-H Club, a Mower County 4-H
officer, a Korean War era
veteran and a member of the
American Legion. Harry traveled
extensively on five continents
and particularly enjoyed
cruising down the Nile River and
touring Venezuela. He saw world
wonders including the Pyramids
of Egypt and the Great Wall of
China. Harry closely followed
current events and appreciated
the lessons of history. In his
later years, he was a founding
member of the Austin chapter of
Minnesota Storytellers.
Humorist, storyteller and poet,
he regularly enthralled crowds
with tales of local and family
history and poems such as his
country classic "The Old Red
Barn." His optimism and positive
attitude remain an inspiration
to us all.
He is survived by
devoted wife of 48 years, Ruth
(Spartz) of Adams; children,
Michael of Forest Lake, Julie
(Joe Kimball) of White Bear
Lake, Bonnie (Roy Brang) of
Winona, Teresa (Galen Neuzil) of
Mantorville, Lt. Col. Richard
(Oti) of Pusan, South Korea,
Mary of Rochester, Steve (Mary)
of Dodge Center and Kathy (Jim)
Loecher of St. Charles;
grandchildren, Christina Kramer,
Alexander and Andrew Kimball,
Rachel Neuzil, Elizabeth and
Matthew Kramer, Adriana and
Zachary Loecher, Joey (David
Kimdon), Katie (Jake Kimball);
brother and farming partner,
Jerry (Elaine) of Adams;

Hass, 86, of Riceville, passed
away at the Riceville Community
Rest Home, on Wednesday, March
23, 2005.
A private family
service will be held with the
Reverend Michael Carey
officiating. Burial was in the
Riverside Cemetery, Riceville,
Iowa.
Lillian Hass was
born in Spring Creek Township in
Tama County, Iowa, to Herbert
and Linda (Michelsen) Puls on
December 14, 1918. On September
3, 1941, she was united in
marriage to Newall Wilmer Hass
in Waterloo, Iowa. They farmed
in Tama County until 1953.
Newall and Lillian then moved to
Howard County. Newall passed
away on July 26, 1983 and she
moved to Riceville. Lillian
moved to the Evergreen
Apartments in Osage in 2001 and
entered the Riceville Community
Rest Home in 2002.
Her survivors
include one nephew, Jerry Plaehn
and a niece, Diane Olson and
their families.
Lillian was
preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Newall in
1983; one sister, Helen Plaehn;
and one brother, Loren Puls.

John H. Snowgren,
age 94, of Osage and formerly of
Marshalltown, died on Wednesday,
March 23, 2005, at the Mitchell
County Regional Health Center in
Osage.
Memorial services
will be held at 10:30 a.m., on
Monday, May 2, 2005, at the Elim
Lutheran Church, Marshalltown,
Iowa, with Pastor Karen Cluts
officiating. Inurnment will be
in the Riverside Cemetery in
Marshalltown. There will be a
time for lunch and fellowship at
the church following the
memorial service.
John was born on
December 22, 1910 in Madrid,
Iowa, the son of Earl Vivian and
Iva Maurine (Hildreth) Snowgren.
He attended grade schools in
Pella, Perry and Madrid, Iowa.
John graduated in 1928 from the
Rhodes, Iowa High School. He
also attended Drake University
in Des Moines. John was united
in marriage to Ruth Justine
Bretthauer on July 4, 1933.
John's career was in the egg and
poultry business, starting with
him as a partner in the
Melbourne Produce in Melbourne,
Iowa. He then operated Snowgren
Produce in Zearing, Iowa, from
1932 to 1945, after which he was
President of the Central Iowa
Poultry and Egg Company in
Marshalltown until 1955. John
then was vice-president of
Randolph Foods in Marshalltown
and Guthrie Center. In 1963, he
became associated with
Cumberland Farms Stores in
Boston, Massachusetts, after
which he became a full time
associate with Oskaloosa Foods
in Oskaloosa, Iowa in 1965.
Starting in 1975,
he spent winters in McAllen,
Texas and continued to work the
balance of the year at Oskaloosa
Foods. John moved to Osage in
2000, making his home at the
Osage Rehabilitation and Health
Care Center. John was Past
Exalted Ruler, BPOE 312 in
Marshalltown and was past
president of the North Central
States Poultry and Egg
Institute. He was chairman of
the building committee for the
classroom addition at Elim
Lutheran Church in Marshalltown,
where he served as president of
the church council.
He is survived by
a son-in-law, Edwin Maakestad of
Osage; two grandchildren, Nicole
Maakestad of Des Moines and Jon
Maakestad of North Liberty; and
two great-grandchildren.
John was preceded
in death by his parents; his
wife, Ruth Snowgren on November
19, 1996; his daughter, Jacky
Maakestad on August 6, 2004; and
a sister, Adah Hilleman.
The

24, 2005, two days after birth
at the St. Luke's Hospital.

Survivors include
his parents and a twin brother,

Rollins Feldt, age 96, of Osage,
died on Friday, March 25, 2005,
at the Faith Lutheran Home in
Osage.

Savior's Lutheran Church in
Osage, with the Rev. Lance
Kittleson of the Deer Creek
Lutheran Church and Rev. Roy Ott
of Our Savior's Lutheran Church

in the Carpenter Cemetery.
Marion was born
to Fred and Helen Rollins on
January 31, 1909. She grew up in
Waterloo and graduated from the
West Waterloo High School. She
was united in marriage to
Lawrence Feldt on February 19,
1927 in Waverly, Iowa. They
lived in Waterloo until 1935,
when they moved to Mitchell
County and operated a grocery
store in Carpenter, Iowa, for
several years. Following her
husbands death in 1960, Marion
was employed at the Farmer's
National Bank in Lyle,
Minnesota, until her retirement
in 1981. She later moved to the
Cedars Apartments in Austin,
Minnesota, for several years and
in 1998 she moved to the
Evergreen Apartments in Osage.
She moved to the Faith Home
following a short illness in
2003.
Marion is
survived by her daughter,
Shirley Funk and her husband,
Lavern of Osage; four grandsons,
Steve (Elizabeth) Funk of San
Francisco, California, Tracy
(Peggy) Funk of Osage, Todd
(Heather) Funk of Winona,
Minnesota and Spencer (Cindy)
Funk of Onalaska, Wisconsin;
granddaughter-in-law, Paige
Amsler of Wayzata, Minnesota; 11
great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews and special
friend, Sara Ritter of St.
Ansgar.
She was preceded
in death by her husband,

Paul William
Retterath, was born on the
family farm in rural Meyer,
Iowa, on June 21, 1921, to
Joseph J. and Anne (Klockner)
Retterath. Paul attended local
schools. On September 28, 1949,
he was united in marriage to
Mary Catherine Schwieger at the
Visitation Catholic Church in
Stacyville, Iowa. Paul loved
farming and continued until his
passing.
Paul's survivors
include three sons, Charles of
Chester, Iowa, Ronald and his
wife, Terri of Elma, Iowa and
Gary and his wife, Jenifer of
Riceville, Iowa; two daughters,
Sharon and her husband, Robert
Hanson of Fredericksburg, Iowa
and Linda and her husband,
Richard Fagerness of Princeton,
Minnesota; 13 grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren; three
sisters, Marie Rauen, Isabele
Gilgenbach, Margaret Gerber and
her husband, Robert, all of
Adams, Minnesota; and a

officiated. Burial was in the
Riverside Cemetery, Riceville.
Ruth Wells, was
born East of Riceville on
February 27, 1906, to John and
Ida (Reynolds) Fellows. She
attended local school and
graduated from the Riceville
High School in 1926. Ruth taught
school for many years at the
Round Grove School. Ruth was
united in marriage on September
28, 1929, to Aaron Hadley Wells.
Ruth and Aaron farmed the family
farm for many years. Ruth was a
member of the First Baptist
Church of Riceville and loved
gardening and animals.
Survivors include
her son, Howard of Riceville;
and a niece and nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; her
husband, Aaron in 1958; and six
brothers, Howard, Robert David,
James, Franklin and Lloyd.

Ellen was born on

Delia A. Erdmann,
age 90, of Osage, died on
Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the
Faith Home in Osage.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, April 4, at
the Sacred Heart Catholic Church
in Osage, with Rev. Mark
Reasoner officiating. Burial was
in the Sacred Heart Catholic
Cemetery in Osage.
Delia was born on
January 28, 1915 in Platte,
South Dakota, the daughter of
William and Agnes (Quinn)
Overkamp. Delia's mother died
when she was small, after which
she came to live in Osage, Iowa,
with her grandparents, William
and Anna Overkamp. She graduated
from the Osage High School and
then attended business college
in Waterloo. On September 20,
1940, Delia married Harold W.
Erdmann in Platte, South Dakota.
Harold and Delia started the
Motor Inn garage in Osage.
Starting in 1968, Delia worked
as an assistant to the Osage
City Clerk. She became city
clerk in 1973 and held that
position until she retired in
1987. Delia not only served the
city in her job, but also dearly
loved the town and citizens of
Osage.
Delia was very
active at attending social
events around town. She was also
a devoted member of the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church.
She is survived
by two daughters, Laurie Erdmann
Martin of St. Ansgar and Julie
Erdmann of San Diego,
California; one granddaughter,
Tara D. Martin of Tacoma,
Washington; two
great-grandchildren, Marshun and
Delayna Martin of Tacoma,
Washington; and a sister-in-law,
Ruby Erdmann of Osage.
Delia was
preceded in death by her
grandparents; her parents; her
husband, Harold W. Erdmann in
1990; and a brother, Patrick
Overkamp.

Ones, age 83, of Osage, died on
Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the
Mitchell Country Regional Health
Center-Hospice Unit in Osage.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, April 4, at
the Rock Creek Lutheran Church,
Osage, with Rev. R. Dawson
Tornes officiating. Burial was
in the Rock Creek Cemetery.
Justin Royal
Ones, was born to Iver John Ones
and Rhoda Olive (Fods) Ones on
November 16, 1921 in Rock
Township, Mitchell County, Iowa.
He was baptized on February 14,
1922, by Pastor O. C. Myhre of
the Rock Creek Lutheran Church.
He was instructed in the
Lutheran faith by Pastor O. C.
Myhre of Rock Creek Lutheran
Church and confirmed on May 31,
1936, where he was a lifetime
member. He received his
elementary education at the Rock
No. 7, rural school, Rock
Township. On November 20, 1949,
he was united in marriage with
Clara Kroneman of rural Grafton,
at the St. John's Lutheran
Church, Rock Township. They were
married for 55 years. They were
blessed with two sons, Jerry and
Laird.
He served in
various organizations of the
church and was a 4-H Leader for
many years. Justin was a farmer
and also worked as a carpenter
for Andrew Gemaelich for nine
years and for Olsen Implement
for 17 years. They continued
living on the family farm where
he was born. After retiring, he
and Clara worked on many
woodworking projects. They also
enjoyed going to dances. In June
of 1992, they moved to Osage.
Survivors include
his wife, Clara of Osage; two
sons, Jerry Ones of Frederic,
Wisconsin and Laird Ones of
Osage; three grandchildren,
Angie Ones and friend, Dan
Mortenson of Frederic,
Wisconsin, Jessica and husband,
Ryan Tollander of Siren,
Wisconsin and Jeremy Ones and
wife, Renee of Frederic,
Wisconsin; five
great-grandchildren, Jaryd and
Jori Braden, Macy and Morgan
Tollander and Benjamin Justin
Ones; two sisters, Truly Flaaten
of Kensett and Winnie Ones of
Colorado Springs, Colorado; a
brother, Birchard Ones of
Pueblo, Colorado; a
sister-in-law, Garda Ones of
Mason City; a brother-in-law,
Ezra Tebben of Edwardsville,
Illinois; and many nieces and
nephews.
Justin was
preceded in death by his
parents; two brothers, twin
brother, John Ones and Fods
Ones; and two sisters, Janette
Tebben and Esther McClellan.
Funeral

Joseph Hoffman,
91, of Stacyville, died on
Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the
Stacyville Community Nursing
Home, Stacyville.
Funeral service
were held on Monday, April 4, at
the Visitation Catholic Church,
Stacyville, with Rev. Mark
Reasoner officiating. Burial was
in the Visitation Cemetery.
Joe was born in
Meyer, Iowa on February 24,
1914, to Caspar and Margaretha (Huemann)
Hoffman. Joe attended local
schools and the Pacelli High
School in Austin, Minnesota. On
June 17, 1939, he was united in
marriage to Pauline Juenger at
the St. Bernard Church in
Chicago, Illinois. Joe farmed
for most of his adult life, but
also worked in Chicago for
several years and at the
Stacyville Elevator.
He was a member
of the Knights of Columbus, the
Eagles and the Moose Club. He
enjoyed traveling, playing cards
and dancing.
Joe is survived
by one son, Gary and his wife,
Nijole of Chicago, Ilinois; two
daughters, Charlotte Fails and
her husband, Ishmael of North
Hollywood, California and Janet
Chico and her husband, Edward
and their sons, Steven and
Michael of Glendale, California.
Joe was preceded
in death by his parents; his
wife, Pauline in 1997; eight
brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral
arrangements were made by the
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home,
St. Ansgar, Iowa.
