Harold J. (Harry) Kramer

March 30, 2005

Harold J. Kramer, of rural Adams, died on Tuesday, March 22, 2005, with courage and dignity, surrounded by his loving family, in the same farmhouse where he was born 73 years ago.

A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, March 28, at the St. John's Catholic Church of Johnsburg. Memorials preferred to the Sacred Heart School of Adams or the American Cancer Society.

Harry was the third generation of a strong family which raised cattle and farmed corn for more than 125 years along the Minnesota-Iowa state line. He loved a party and loved people. The Kramer hospitality was well known throughout southern Minnesota and northern Iowa, especially during sweet corn season. Nothing pleased Harry more than visiting with family, friends and neighbors. Besides farming, Harry was a longtime DeKalb Dealer and a real estate salesman for Spartz Realty. He attended school at the District 71 Country School, Johnsburg and the Sacred Heart Parochial Schools and the Adams High School, where he graduated in 1949. He was a natural athlete, but enjoyed baseball best and played second base and shortstop for the Johnsburg town team from 1946 to 1965.

Harry was a spiritual man who contributed greatly to his church and community. He was a mass lector at the St. John's Catholic Church. Twice he was grand knight of the Knights of Columbus. He was president of the Mower County Cattleman's Association, a founding leader of the Johnsburg Country Aces 4-H Club, a Mower County 4-H officer, a Korean War era veteran and a member of the American Legion. Harry traveled extensively on five continents and particularly enjoyed cruising down the Nile River and touring Venezuela. He saw world wonders including the Pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China. Harry closely followed current events and appreciated the lessons of history. In his later years, he was a founding member of the Austin chapter of Minnesota Storytellers. Humorist, storyteller and poet, he regularly enthralled crowds with tales of local and family history and poems such as his country classic "The Old Red Barn." His optimism and positive attitude remain an inspiration to us all.

He is survived by devoted wife of 48 years, Ruth (Spartz) of Adams; children, Michael of Forest Lake, Julie (Joe Kimball) of White Bear Lake, Bonnie (Roy Brang) of Winona, Teresa (Galen Neuzil) of Mantorville, Lt. Col.
