Eleanor Erdmann

Eleanor Erdmann,
age 77, of Osage, died on
Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at
the Mitchell County Regional
Health Center in Osage, of
injuries she received in an
accidental fall.
Memorial services
were held on Monday, February 7,
at the First Baptist Church in
Osage, with the Rev. Douglas
Brown officiating. Inurnment was
in the Osage Cemetery.
Eleanor was born
on the family farm near
Morristown, Minnesota, on
October 10, 1927, the daughter
of Jesse and Adelaide (Tolzman)
White. She was the second of 12
children. Eleanor attended
country school and graduated
from the Morristown High School.
Eleanor was united in marriage
to Gilbert E. Erdmann on July 4,
1948, at Faribault, Minnesota.
They made their home in Osage,
where they raised five children.
Eleanor loved to
entertain and always made sure
that the table had an
appropriate centerpiece for the
occasion. Cooking was her
interest, her whole life,
starting with helping to feed 11
siblings, to caring for her own
five children, to preparing
meals at the Mitchell County
Memorial Hospital. No one ever
left her house hungry. Eleanor
came from a very musical family
and loved to sing a lively hymn.
She also possessed the very
unique ability of playing the
saw. She had a very strong faith
in God that guided her, her
whole life. Eleanor was a member
of the First Baptist Church in
Osage and was a member of the
Ann Judson Circle.
She is survived
by her husband, Gilbert Erdmann
of Osage; three daughters, Judy
(Joel) Voaklander of Osage,
Cheryl (Alan) Adams of Osage and
Christie (Troy) Levenhagen of
Mason City; two sons, Ken (Mary
Kay) Erdmann of Plymouth and
Kevin Erdmann of Osage; 12
grandchildren, Doug and Dawn
Erdmann, Ben, Darin, Brent and
Nathan Voaklander, Travis and
Christopher Adams and Stephanie
(Adams) Thompson, Courtney, Jona
and Cameron Levenhagen; one
step-grandson, Jordan Beier; and
six great-grandchildren, Haley,
Will, Adam, Lauren, Gwen and Ava
Voaklander; 11 brothers and
sisters, Arlene Engler, Thelma
Derby, Jean (Ivan) Ludeman,
Jerome (Betty) White, Elaine
(Dale) Laun, Ione (Lloyd)
Doerbaum, Genevieve Delk, Fred
White, Ruth Ann (Karl) Pearson,
Arvid (Shelly) White and Philip
(Kathy) White; and a
sister-in-law, Eveline Sorg.
Eleanor was
preceded in death by her
parents.

Kathy J. Thoms,
51, of Waverly, Iowa, died on
Friday, February 4, 2005, at the
Waverly Health Center, Waverly,
after a fifteen year battle with
cancer.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, February
8, at 11:00 a.m., at the St.
Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly,
Iowa. Burial was in the
Harlington Cemetery, Waverly.
Memorials may be directed to the
American Cancer Society, St.
Paul's School or to the Bremer
County Fair.
Kathy was born on
July 22, 1953 in Riceville,
Iowa, the daughter of Harry Lee
and Rosa P. (Pflieger)
Warburton. She was baptized at
the St. Peter's Lutheran Church
in Elma, Iowa and was confirmed
at the Trinity Lutheran Church
in Osage, Iowa. She graduated
from the Nora Springs-Rock Falls
High School on May 26, 1971 and
went on to graduate from the
Spencer School of Business in
1972. She also attended Wartburg
College and the University of
St. Thomas. On June 29, 1974,
she was united in marriage to E.
William (Bill) Thoms at the St.
Luke's Lutheran in Nora Springs,
Iowa.
She worked for
the Vernon Company from 1976 to
1997. From 1989 to 1996 she was
the Bremer County Auditor. In
1997, she became the Bremer
County Director of Finance and
Management and continued with
that position until the present
time.
She was a member
of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority
(XI Gamma Nu Chapter); WWAS Red
Hat Society; Bremer County
Breast Cancer Support Group;
Iowa State Association of
Counties; 4-H Bremer Ranchers
Leader; A-Z Coffee Group; a
former member of the St. Paul's
Church Council and School Board
as well as being a former Sunday
School Teacher. Kathy enjoyed
collecting angels and elephants.
She was also very involved in
politics.
Kathy is survived
by her son, Adam W. Thoms of
Waverly, Iowa; her brothers and
sisters and their spouses, John
(Mel) Warburton of Janesville,
Iowa, Terry (Stan) Sprung of
Plymouth, Iowa, Ann (Jerry)
Arndorfer of Spokane,
Washington, Martin Warburton of
Mason City, Iowa and DeLaine
Warburton of Britt, Iowa; and
many nieces and nephews.
Kathy was
preceded in death by her
parents; her grandparents; and
her husband, Bill on July 21,
2003.

Barker-Schroeder, 86, of
Wheeling, Illinois, formerly of
Osage, died on Tuesday, February
8, 2005, at McHenry, Illinois.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, February
12, at the Our Savior's Lutheran
Church, Osage, with Rev. Dennis
Hanson officiating. Burial was
in the Osage Cemetery. Memorials
may be given to the American
Cancer Society.
Frances was born
on January 30, 1919, to Theodore
and Ruby (Woodward) Gunderson in
Osage, Iowa.
She is survived
by her children, Mert (Marci)
Barker, Willie Barker, Russell
(Linda) Barker and Clete Barker;
18 grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren; her
brothers, Laverne (Maxine)
Gunderson and Lauren (Phyllis)
Gunderson; and sister-in-law,
Jenny Gunderson.
Frances was
preceded in death by her
parents, Theodore and Ruby
Gunderson; a son, Ronald Barker;
a daughter, Cheryl Duda; a
brother, Eugene Gunderson; and a
sister, Dorothy Gunderson.

Robert Ellsworth Hinzman

Robert E.
Hinzman, age 82, of Riceville,
passed away at his residence on
Wednesday, February 9, 2005.
Memorial services
were held on Saturday, February
12, at 3:00 p.m., at the
Lindstrom Funeral Home in
Riceville. Burial will be at a
later date in the Riverside
Cemetery, Riceville, Iowa, as
Robert made an anatomical gift
to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota.
Robert was born
on November 20, 1922, to William
Ford and Lera (Dunton) Hinzman
in Riceville, Iowa. He attended
local schools and graduated from
the Riceville High School in
1940. Robert was united in
marriage to Lola Thompson on
July 1, 1942, north of
Riceville. To them was born a
daughter, Connie Rae. As a young
man, Bob enjoyed hunting and was
an excellent trap shooter. Bob's
biggest enjoyment was attending
any kind of car races and he was
a regular spectator most
weekends with his special
friend, Gabby Howland.
Bob worked with
his father in the Hinzman Pool
Hall in Riceville and later
attended barber's college in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Robert and
his wife, Lola operated the
Hinzman's Hair N Care in
Riceville until health caused
Bob to retire in 2003. Lois
continues to operate the salon.
His survivors
include his wife, Lola of
Riceville; a daughter, Connie
and her husband, Jerry Kilts of
Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and a
granddaughter, Kimberly O'Hara
of Iowa City, Iowa.
Robert was
preceded in death by his
parents.

John "Jim" Hungerford

John "Jim"
Hungerford, 74, of Osage, died
on Thursday February 10, 2005,
at the Mitchell County Regional
Health Center in Osage.
A
Mass of Christian
Burial was held at 11:00 a.m.,
on Saturday, February 12, at the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Osage, with Rev. Mark Reasoner
officiating. Burial was in the
Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery,
Osage, with military rites by
the Osage VFW Post 7920 and the
Osage American Legion Post 278.
Jim was born on
December 26, 1930 in Osage, the
son of Roy and Mary (Schloff)
Hungerford. He was educated in
the Osage Schools and graduated
from the Osage High School in
1949. After graduation, Jim
served in the U.S. Air Force
during the Korean Conflict. Jim
was united in marriage to Wilma
Bechtum on October 4, 1969 in
Osage. He was employed as a meat
cutter for 40 years, retiring
from Steele's Super Valu in
Osage.
He was a member
of the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Osage, the Osage VFW
Post 7920 and the Osage American
Legion Post 278.
Jim is survived
by his wife, Wilma Hungerford of
Osage; a son, Loren (Barb)
Bechtum of La Crosse, Wisconsin
and their children, Sarah
Bechtum, Amy Bechtum, Amanda and
her husband, Nick Rouch and Levi
Bechtum; a sister, Betty DeMar
of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a
sister-in-law, Neva Hungerford
of Osage; and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Jim was preceded
in death by his parents; two
grandsons, Matthew and Andrew
Bechtum; and two brothers, Jean
and Charles Hungerford.

Rev. Wilbur Troge
February 23, 2005
Pastor Wilbur
Albert Troge, went home to
heaven to be with his Savior,
Jesus Christ on Tuesday,
February 15, 2005, at the age of
89 years.
The Christian
funeral was held on
Monday, February 21, at the
Mount Olive Lutheran Church in
Appleton, Wisconsin, with Rev.
Robert F. Raasch officiating.
Interment was in the Peace
Lutheran Cemetery, Oshkosh. In
lieu of flowers, memorials may
be directed to the Fox Valley
Lutheran High School, Grace
Christian School or to the Mount
Olive Ev. Lutheran School.
Wilbur was born
on February 6, 1916 in Mitchell
County, Iowa, to Albert and
Minnie (Hartwig) Troge. He was
baptized and confirmed at the
St. John's Lutheran Church,
Mitchell County, a church that
grandfathers on both sides
helped to establish. He attended
the public grade and high school
in Osage, Iowa. He graduated
from the University of Iowa with
a bachelor's degree in business
and was planning to attend law
school. However, God called him
to the preaching ministry and he
enrolled at the Wartburg
Lutheran Seminary in Waverly,
Iowa. His first parish was in
Garden City, Kansas. He served
there for two years. On January
10, 1948, he married the former
Helen Brockdorf in Milwaukee.
They celebrated 50 years of
marriage in 1998. God blessed
them with five children.
Wilbur and Helen
enjoyed camping, traveling and
serving the Lord together in his
church. In 1948, Pastor Troge
was called by Grace Lutheran
Church of Appleton, Wisconsin.
He served the rest of his
ministry there. During those 33
years Pastor Troge helped the
congregation in two building
projects and the establishment
of the Grace Christian Day
School, PK to 6th grade. During
his retirement he and his wife
moved to Oshkosh where he served
the Bethel Lutheran Home as a
chaplain and also several
pastoral vacancies in the
Oshkosh area. His last years
were spent at the Greenfield
Manor, Little Chute and at the
Renaissance Assisted Living,
Appleton, where he held a weekly
Bible class for his fellow
residents. He currently resided
at the Rennes Health Center,
Appleton, and was a member of
the Mount Olive Lutheran Church,
Appleton.
Survivors include
four children, Christine
Gallipeau of Spring, Texas and
her fiancée, Adrian Luecke, Eric
(Arlyss) Troge of Hortonville,
Melissa (Howard) Estervig of
Jacksonville, Florida and
Gretchen (Pastor Stephen) Gallo
of St. Peter, Illinois; a
daughter-in-law, Debra Troge of
Manitow; 17 grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; a former
granddaughter-in-law, Renee'
Gallipeau-Aguiluz; a sister,
Harriet Trusty of Osage Iowa;
three brothers-in-law, Carl
Brockdorf of Mecosta, Michigan,
William (Berniece) Brockdorf of
West Bend and Robert (Jeanette)
Brockdorf of Milwaukee; and
cousins, nieces and nephews.
Wilbur Troge was preceded in
death by his parents, Albert and
Minnie Troge; his wife, Helen in
1998; a son, Kurt in 2004; a
brother-in-law, Charles Trusty;
and a sister-in-law, Beverly
Brockdorf.

David John Warrington

David John
Warrington, died suddenly on
Thursday, February 17, 2005,
while at work in Cheyenne,
Wyoming. Arrangements are
pending.
David, the son of
Harold and Bonnie Warrington of
Osage, was born in Annapolis,
Maryland. He attended schools in
Nora Springs, Iowa, Phoenix,
Arizona and Salem, Virginia. He
also attended one semester at
the University in Johannesburg,
South Africa and received his
bachelor’s and master’s degrees
at Radford University in
Radford, Virginia. David was a
producer/director at Wyoming
Public Television in Riverton.
He married Darlene Stewart in
Norfolk, Virginia in 1979.
David enjoyed
fishing and flying. He had a
single-engine pilot’s license
and a balloon pilot’s license.
He was very active in the
Riverton Balloon Club and the
local amateur radio club.
His survivors
include his wife, Darlene of
Riverton, Wyoming; his parents
in Osage; and aunts, uncles and
many cousins.

Ruth Gilbrech Henning

Ruth Gilbrech
Henning, age 97, of Osage, died
on Thursday, February 17, 2005,
at the Faith Home in Osage.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, February
21, at the Champion-Bucheit
Funeral Home in Osage, with the
Rev. Dr. J. Samuel Subramanian
officiating. Cremation will
follow the services with
inurnment later in the Osage
Cemetery.
Ruth, the
daughter of Henry and Edna
(Snyder) Tottenham was born on
June 26, 1907 in Kossuth County,
near Algona. She graduated from
the Minneapolis School of Beauty
and Culture. She married Alvin
Gilbrech on March 9, 1926 in
Minneapolis. They moved to Osage
and together operated the Mari
Posa Beauty Shop for 47 years.
Alvin died on October 2, 1972.
Ruth married Lars Henning of
Latimer on May 24, 1975, at the
First United Methodist Chapel in
Osage. Lars died in 1980. Ruth
wintered in Texas for many
years.
Ruth is survived
by a sister-in-law, Dorothy
Ackland of Minnesota; two
step-sons, Owen (Juanita)
Henning of Marco Island, Florida
and Wayne (Eva) Henning of
Latimer; seven
step-grandchildren; several
step-great-grandchildren and
step-great-great-grandchildren;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by special
friends, Ed and Beverly Boehmer
of Osage and their family, Sandy
Roll and fiancée, Rod Harang and
family of Lake Mills, the late
Merle Boehmer, wife, Laurie and
family of Osage, Ken Boehmer and
wife, Kathy and family of Osage,
Donna Forsyth and husband, Mark
and family of Charles City, Mary
Bethke and husband, Carl and
family of Osage and Jim Boehmer
and wife, Angie and family of
Lake Mills.
Ruth was preceded
in death by her parents;
husband, Alvin Gilbrech and

Miller, age 86, of Rochester,
Minnesota, formerly of New
Haven, Iowa, passed away on
Monday, February 21, 2005, at
Rochester Health and Rehab.
A
Mass of Christian
Burial was held on Friday,
February 25 at the St. Peter's
Catholic Church in New Haven.
Reverend Ray E. Atwood
officiated. Burial was in the
St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in
New Haven. The Champion-Bucheit
Funeral Home, Osage, had charge
of the arrangements.
Mary Miller, was
born on December 6, 1918 in New
Haven, to Peter and Rose
(Byrnes) Miller. She was
educated at the St. Mary's
Academy in New Haven and
received her normal training and
teacher certification at the
Seminary in Osage. Mary taught
school at Douglas Number 2 and
Mt. Hope in the rural school
system. She continued her
education at the University of
Minnesota while in Minneapolis.
Mary lived in the Minneapolis
and Rochester, Minnesota areas
for most of her life, where she
was employed as a stenographer.
She lived for a time with her
sister, Agnes in Mt. Vernon,
Missouri. Mary always felt a
close attachment to her many
nieces and nephews.
She enjoyed
sewing, knitting and family
genealogy.
Her survivors
include her sister, Ruth
(Miller) Sullivan and her
husband, Don of Waterloo;
sister-in-law, Marguerite Miller
of New Haven; and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded
in death by her parents;
brothers, John and Maurice
Miller; and sister, Agnes
Meirick.

Maxine M. McSweeney
March 8, 2005
Maxine M.
McSweeney, 86, of Cedar Falls
and formerly of Osage and Fort
Dodge, died of heart failure on
Friday, February 25, 2005, at
the Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community in Waverly, Iowa.
Memorial services
will be held at 10:30 a.m., on
Saturday, March 12, at the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church,
with inurnment in the Sacred
Heart Catholic Cemetery, both in
Osage. A celebration of her life
will be held at the K. C. Hall
in Osage, immediately after the
services. There will be no
visitation.
Maxine Marie
Penney, was born near Little
Cedar, Mitchell County, Iowa on
October 4, 1918, the eldest
daughter of Clinton Henry (Joe)
and Thelma Lois McPhail Penney.
She attended Little Cedar
Schools, graduating in the Class
of 1936. After briefly attending
Iowa State Teachers College, now
the University of Northern Iowa,
she married Robert Francis
McSweeney, whom she had met in
the first grade on November 25,
1936, in Cresco, Iowa. The
couple set up housekeeping in
Little Cedar and through the
years, worked on a number of
farms in the county. During WW
II, along with their only
daughter, Kay, the couple
relocated to Bangor, Maine,
Portales, New Mexico and
Portland, Oregon.
Following the
war, the couple returned to
Mitchell County, settling on a
farm north of Little Cedar. They
ended farming in 1962, moving to
Fort Dodge, Iowa, where Maxine
worked for many years at the
Friendship Haven Retirement Home
before retiring in 1984. In
1985, they moved to Mason City
where they lived for 15 years.
The couple returned to Osage in
2000 where they lived until
moving to Cedar Falls in 2003 to
be near their daughter. Her
husband of 67 years, Robert,
passed away on February 20,
2004. Maxine moved to Bartels in
Waverly in November 2004.
Maxine had a
great love of her family and
friends. Her door was always
open, the coffee always brewed
and the table always full. She
will be missed by all whom she
touched during her 86 years.
She is survived
by her daughter, Kay McSweeney
of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and her
grandson, Michael Higgins of
Indianapolis, Indiana; and many
nieces and nephews.
Maxine was
preceded in death by her
parents; two brothers, Dean and
Rex Penney; a sister, Ruth
Penney Arnold; and an infant
granddaughter.
Funeral

Keith E. Stille

Keith E. Stille,
age 81, of Pocomoke City,
Maryland, died on Friday,
February 25, 2005, at the
Peninsula Regional Medical
Center in Salisbury, Maryland of
complications of emphysema.
A private
graveside service for family
members was held on Thursday,
March 10, 2005.
Keith Stille, was
born on August 26, 1923 in
Klemme, Iowa, the son of Harvey
and Blanche Liljenberg Stille.
He was a parachute rigger (PRC)
and a veteran of World War II.
He completed 30 years of active
and inactive service in the U.S.
Navy.
He was a member
of the Fleet Reserve
Association, American Legion and
Veterans of Foreign Wars. He
also worked at the Pocomoke
River State Park, Shad Landing
area, retiring from the Maryland
Forest and Park Service,
Department of National Resources
in 1983.
He is survived by
his wife of 59 years, Audrey
Stille; a daughter, Patricia
Stille Lederman and son-in-law,
Cary of Salisbury, Maryland; a
brother, William Stille and
wife, Maxine of Osage, Iowa;
sister-in-law, Bonnie Johnson
and husband, Paul of Thompson,
Iowa; and several nieces and
nephews.

Glen A. Christiansen

Glen A.
Christiansen, 87, of Nora
Springs, died on Saturday,
February 26, 2005, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City.
Funeral services
will be held at 11:00 a.m., on
Wednesday, March 2, at the St.
Luke Lutheran Church, Nora
Springs, with Reverend Ruth
Hansen officiating. Burial will
be in the Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City. Visitation
will be held on Tuesday, March
1, from 5-8:00 p.m., at the
Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora
Springs.
Glen Arthur
Christiansen, was born on July
23, 1917, on a farm in West
Cedar Township, Mitchell County.
Glen is the son of Hans and
Augusta (Wohlert) Christiansen.
Glen attended a country grade
school, graduated from the Nora
Springs High School and attended
Iowa State University. He was
united in marriage to Anna Belle
Deets on June 18, 1944 in Nora
Springs. Glen farmed his entire
life north of Nora Springs until
Glen and Anna Belle moved to
Nora Springs in 1994. They moved
to Summit Heights, Nora Springs,
two weeks ago.
Glen was baptized
and confirmed at the Rock Creek
Lutheran Church. He became a
member of the St. Luke Lutheran
Church in Nora Springs, where he
served on many boards and
committees over the years. His
faith was very evident by the
way he treated his family and
friends. He was an avid baseball
fan, playing baseball as a child
and throughout his life. He also
enjoyed bowling, which he
participated in for many years
on leagues and in tournaments.
He is a member of the Mason City
Bowling Association Hall of Fame
and was a former President of
the State Senior Citizen Bowling
Association.
Glen is survived
by his wife, Anna Belle
Christiansen of Nora Springs;
three children, Cathy (Bob)
Charleston of Pomeroy, Terry
(Pat) Christiansen of Nora
Springs and Jay (Dianne)
Christiansen of Nora Springs;

Coonradt May, 83, of Norfolk,
Virginia, passed away on Sunday,
February 27, 2005, at the Bon
Secours DePaul Medical Center.
Funeral services
were conducted in the funeral
home chapel on Thursday, March
3, by Rev. Clifton Whitlock.
Burial followed in the Woodlawn
Memorial Gardens. In lieu of
flowers, memorial donations may
be made to the Parkinson's
Disease Foundation, Washington,
D.C.
June, a native of
Osage, Iowa, was a daughter of
the late Warren and Alma Runge
Coonradt and the beloved wife
for 58 years of Richard Russell
May. She had been a member for
45 years of the Saint John's
United Methodist Church.
In addition to
her loving husband, Richard, she
is survived by two daughters,
Mary Jo Lund and Susan M.
Mauldin and husband, Robert, all
of Norfolk; two sisters, Bonnie
Church and Gloria Moore, both of
Osage; and three granddaughters,
Melissa Martino, Shelley Martino
and Katherine Lund.

Lester N. Rowe,
age 92, of Osage, died on
Monday, February 28, 2005, at
the Faith Lutheran Home in
Osage.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, March 4, at
the Our Savior's Lutheran Church
in Osage, with Rev. Dennis
Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott
officiating. Burial was in the
Osage Cemetery.
Lester was born
on February 8, 1913 at Orchard,
Iowa, the son of Ray and Tena
(Nelson) Rowe. He attended rural
school at Rock No. 7, and
attended the Osage High School
through the 12th grade. Lester
then worked as a hired man and
at the Oliver Company in Charles
City. He was married to Dallas
Nack on November 17, 1936, at
the Baptist Parsonage in Osage,
Iowa. Lester and Dallas first
set up housekeeping and farming
in Rock Township, after which
they moved to the Little Cedar
area in 1944. After one year,
they moved to the Mitchell area,
where they farmed Dallas's
mother's farm for four years.
They then moved to the Mildred
Goplerud farm in Rock Township.
Lester and Dallas remained on
this farm for 33 years, before
retiring and moving to Osage in
1982. Dallas died on June 14,
2003. They had been married for
66 years.
Lester served as
President of the Board of
Directors of the Osage Elevator.
He also helped break ground for
the parish hall of the Our
Savior's Lutheran Church in
Osage. Lester enjoyed
woodworking, refinishing
furniture and gardening in his
retirement years. He also helped
his son, David, with farming
during the planting and
harvesting seasons.
Lester is
survived by two sons, Jerald
Rowe and his wife, Pat of
Seward, Alaska and David J. Rowe
and his wife, Jane of Osage;
eight grandchildren, Bryan Rowe,
Leslie Altac, Donna Leffler,
Lynn Swenson, Thyra Burke,
Christopher Rowe, Mary Anna Rowe
and Joseph Rowe; nine
great-grandchildren; a brother,
Alan (Phyllis) Rowe of Seattle,
Washington; and a sister, Marvel
Kubicek of Osage.
Lester was
preceded in death by his
parents; his wife, Dallas Rowe;
a grandson, Jon David Rowe; and
three brothers, Paul, Clyde and
Earl Rowe.
Funeral
arrangements were made by the
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in
Osage.
