Velma Kruger

August 10, 2005

Velma Marie Kruger, 72, of Riceville, Iowa, passed away on Friday, August 5, 2005, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, August 10, at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville, with Rev. Michael Parris officiating.

Velma was born on May 17, 1933 in Riceville, Iowa, to Julius and Gertrude (Lubbert) Kapka. She was baptized and confirmed at the Maple Leaf Lutheran Church. Velma graduated from the Riceville High School in 1952. She worked in the First National bank in Riceville after graduation from high school, until she married Donald Kruger in 1957. To this union two sons were born. She moved about the USA and overseas with her husband until he retired from the Air Force in 1982. They returned to live in Riceville in 1986.

Survivors include her husband, Donald of Riceville; two sons, Keith A. Kruger of Wichita Falls, Texas and Eugene and his wife, La Nell Kruger of Wichita Falls, Texas; one brother, Orville Kapka of Riceville; and two sisters, Wilma Gesell of Elma, Iowa and Velda Myers of Riceville.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, La Verne in 1986.

Harlan Lee Bell

August 10, 2005

Harlan Lee Bell, 66, of Cedar Falls, died on Friday, August 5, 2005, at the Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada, after suffering a stroke while on vacation.

There will be a Masonic Service at the Masonic Temple in Cedar Falls on Thursday, August 11, at 7:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 13, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 12, from 5:00 until 7:30 p.m.

Harlan was born on March 5, 1939 in Mower County, Minnesota. He was the oldest of three boys born to John and Ena (Nagle) Bell. Harlan graduated from the St. Ansgar High School in 1958. He then attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, receiving his Bachelors Degree in 1963. He went on to receive his Master of Arts at the University of Iowa in 1971. During his teaching career he taught at the Vinton School for the Blind, Vinton Public School, Charter Oak-Ute and Blakesburg. He was a principal in Urbana and Professor at the Council Bluffs Jr. College. He finished his teaching career in Traer, Iowa where he retired in 2001.

Harlan was a member of the Vinton Masonic Lodge #62 and the secretary for the Black Hawk Lodge #65. He also served as the treasurer of the El Kahir Shine Unit 101. He loved to travel and spent many of his trips visiting family and friends.

He is survived by his brother, Jim (Nancy) Bell; sister-in-law, Sandy Bell; five nieces, Gail (Steve) Smith, Renae Wason, Susan (Dave) Pearl, Dawn (Chris) Standing and Karen (Chad) Smith; and one nephew, Dean (Becky) Bell.

Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ena Bell; and his brother, Russell Bell.

Gertrude Mauer

August 10, 2005

Gertrude Mauer, age 94, of Stacyville, died on Monday, August 8, 2005, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, August 11, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 6:45 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the services at the church on Thursday.

Gertrude was born on August 7, 1911 in Cohasset, Minnesota, the daughter of William and Sophia (Miller) Wolf. She moved to Osage, Iowa, when she was a child. Gertrude married Raymond Mauer on February 4, 1937, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, Iowa. She taught in rural school for a year before her marriage to Raymond. They lived and farmed outside of Stacyville for 28 years. Gertrude moved to Stacyville in 1965. She worked at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Gertrude was a member of the Visitation Catholic Church and Christian Mothers.

Gertrude is survived by three sons, James (Mary) Mauer of Lisle, Illinois, Don (Bonnie) Mauer of Naperville, Illinois and Jerry (Carol) Mauer of Dunlap, Illinois; four daughters, Janice (Clem) Loecher of New Haven, Dorothy Klimek of Hayfield, Minnesota, Carol (Paul) Tilkes of Austin, Minnesota and Joyce (Rich) Hanke of Lakeville, Minnesota; one daughter-in-law, Joanne Mauer of Stacyville; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Sister Mary Wilma Wolf of Cedar Rapids, Agnes (Rollie) Frye of Rockford, Illinois, Catherine Wolf of Loves Park, Illinois and Monica Berg of Greenville, South Carolina; and one brother, Vincent (Xoa) Wolf of Chillicothe, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Robert Mauer; a grandson, Eugene Mauer; her parents; two brothers, Clement and Fidelis Wolf; one sister, Bernice Smith; an infant sister, Wilma Wolf; and one son-in-law, Will Klimek.

Nadine Hernan

August 17, 2005

Nadine Hernan, age 87, of Osage, died on Monday, August 15, 2005, at the Faith Home in Osage.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, August 19, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, in Osage, where there will be a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 6:00 p.m.

Nadine was born on November 1, 1917 in Bokn, Norway, the daughter of Eric and Dina Loden. Nadine immigrated to the United States at the age of nine. The family lived in New Sharon, Iowa, before moving to the Little Cedar area, where they farmed. Nadine graduated from the Little Cedar High School. Nadine was united in marriage to Glen Hernan on September 30, 1936, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They started farming in the New Haven area and northeast of Osage. In 1943, they purchased a farm southwest of St. Ansgar. Nadine was an active partner in their farming operation. After their retirement from farming in 1981, they moved to Osage.

They were active members of the Sons of Norway. Nadine was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed fishing, dancing and chocolate. She passed along to her children and grandchildren her love of Norwegian cooking and her Norwegian heritage.

Nadine is survived by one daughter, Janice Duren of Osage and her five children, Deb Pederson of Raymore, Missouri, Julie (Ken) Gabby of Byron, Minnesota, Vicki (Steve) Johnson of Osage, Marlin (Kelli) Duren of Osage, John Duren and friend, Araceli Angel of Chandler, Arizona; two sons, Montel Hernan and wife, Kay of St. Ansgar and their five children, Christine (Ervin) Follmuth of Mason City, Charlene (Jim) Pajer of Carpenter, Carolyn (John) Werner of Osage, Darlene Niess of Osage, Geri (Dan) Angiulli of Appleton, Wisconsin, Neil Hernan and wife, Theresa of St. Ansgar and their three children, Jessy Hernan of St. Louis, Missouri, Jill Hernan and fiancée, Matt Fee of Coralville, Becca Hernan of St. Ansgar; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Emma (John) Seckar of Charles City and Ruth (Jack) Fritcher of Saratoga; one brother, Don (Millie) Loden of Buffalo, Wyoming; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen Hernan in September of 2002; six sisters; and one brother.

Alma L. Davis

August 24, 2005

Alma L. Davis, age 97, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died on Monday afternoon, August 15, 2005, at the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A Celebration of Her Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, October 15, 2005, at the Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services in Maquoketa, Iowa, with visitation from 1-2:00 p.m. Chaplain/Celebrant Rev. Ruth Ann Scott will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Alma L. Estey, was born on November 18, 1907 in Delmar, Iowa, to William Estey and Mary Ann (Kinrade) Estey. She was a graduate of the Maquoketa Community High School. She married Franklin L. Davis on March 29, 1931 in Morrison, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 17, 1971. Alma had worked at the former Jackson State Bank, now U.S. Bank, in Maquoketa as a teller for many years. She then became the bookkeeper for the family business, Davis Clothiers in Maquoketa for many years, working alongside her husband until his death in 1971.

Alma was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Maquoketa. She was an avid bridge player and loved her friends and family. She also enjoyed doing needlepoint and gardening.

Alma is survived by her children, James (Marilyn) Davis of Coral Springs, Florida and Linda (Mrs. Milton) Owen of St. Ansgar, Iowa; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one sister, Ruth Risser.

Joseph E. Anderson

August 31, 2005

Joseph E. Anderson, age 89, of Orchard, died on Monday, August 15, 2005, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 18, 2005, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage, with Rev. Bruce Kaltwasser officiating. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery.

Joe was born on October 18, 1915 near Rudd, Iowa, the son of Albert B. and Elizabeth (Yonish) Anderson. He attended school in Glenwood, Minnesota. He moved back with his family to the Osage area. On May 7, 1939, he married Olga Marie Schallock. In early years, Joe was a farmer. He owned Anderson Radio and TV in Riceville, dealing in television sales and service. He also ran a service station in St. Ansgar.

Joe liked to fish with family in Minnesota and enjoyed taking trips to Indiana to visit his son and family. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Olga Anderson of Orchard; a daughter, Sharon Rawn of Osage; a son, Merle Anderson and wife, Ann of Larwill, Indiana; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a grandson.

Alda L. Rogers

August 24, 2005

Alda L. Rogers, 95, of Osage, formerly of Charles City, died on Wednesday afternoon, August 17, 2005, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, August 20, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage, with Rev. John A. Moser presiding. Interment was in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Osage.

Alda Lou Rogers, was born on June 17, 1910 in Osage, the daughter of William H. and Bertha (Weinard) Rogers. Alda attended and graduated from the Osage High School, class of 1928. Alda had lived in Osage, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Riceville, and Charles City. She was dedicated to and devoted to her family and faith. Alda attended the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Alda was employed as a certified nursing assistant throughout her working life.

She was active in the TOPS organization, the Grandparents Club and enjoyed working with children at the Washington Elementary School in Charles City for 20 years. She treasured her family and the time she spent with them. Alda was always willing to help and assist anyone at anytime. Alda will be best remembered for being a very hard worker.

Alda will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her. Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Alda's life are several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Alda in death were her parents; grandparents; two sisters, Bernice Gnewuch and Ruth Martin; and three brothers, Oswald, Paul and William Rogers.

Veda S. Donald

August 24, 2005

Veda S. Donald, age 88, of Osage, died on Saturday, August 20, 2005, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday August 23, at the Osage Cemetery in Osage, with Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating.

Veda was born on December 13, 1916, on a farm near Osage, the daughter of Roy and Hazel (Russell) Seaton. Veda attended the Osage Schools and graduated from high school in 1934. She was united in marriage to Verl C. Donald on August 25, 1936 and they had one daughter. Verl was a teacher and coach. The couple lived in Melvin, Rockwell, Floyd and Plainfield, before retiring to Osage in 1979.

She started the school lunch program in Floyd and headed the program in Plainfield, after they moved there. Veda was a member of Eastern Star, an avid Bridge player and had a passion for reading.

She is survived by a brother, Dean Seaton of Osage; her daughter, Phoebe Snittjer and her husband, Charlie of Marietta, Georgia; a granddaughter, Melissa Gerace of Marietta, Georgia; and two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Mia Gerace of Marietta.

Veda was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Edwin Seaton; and her husband, Verl C. Donald on May 14, 1989.

Carol Arickx

August 31, 2005

Carol Ann (White) Arickx, age 63, of St. Ansgar, died on Monday, August 22, 2005, at the Muse-Norris Hospice in Mason City, concluding a courageous seven-year battle with cancer.

Memorial services were held on Friday, August 26, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with Rev. Paul Birkedal officiating. Inurnment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery at Mitchell.

Carol was born on May 6, 1942, the daughter of Everett and Ferne (Bowen) White. She grew up in Rock Falls, Iowa, with the family moving in 1954 to Mitchell, Iowa. She attended school in Mitchell and graduated from the Osage High School in 1960. Carol married Raymond Arickx, Jr., on April 20, 1963. Together, the couple raised three children from their home in Mitchell. Carol excelled in teaching her children the value of family while maintaining a sense of individuality and privacy.

Carol enjoyed making crafts for her loved ones and these gifts have become treasured heirlooms to their recipients. She took great pleasure in watching her grandchildren grow. Her love for her family is only surpassed by their love for her. She will be sorely missed.

Carol is survived by her husband, Ray Arickx of St. Ansgar, Iowa; a daughter, Angela Arickx of St. Ansgar; two sons, Paul Arickx, his wife, Kelly and their children, Emma, Samuel, Sadie and Margaret of Nora Springs, Iowa; Dan Arickx, his wife, Dawn and their children, Sydney, Madison and Makenna of Rock Falls, Illinois; siblings, Lucy (Dale) Jackson, Margaret (Mike) Byington, Don (Novella) White, Janice (Don) Abrahamson and Jim (Sharon) White; mother-in-law, Juanita Arickx; and a multitude of in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister at birth; a niece; her father-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.

According to the family's wishes, memorials may be directed to the Mercy Cancer Center Foundation, Mason City, Iowa or to the Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Kurt S. Sprau

September 7, 2005

Kurt S. Sprau, age 41, of Osage, died on Saturday, August 27, 2005, at his home in Osage of natural causes, pending medical examiner's investigation.

Memorial services were held on Thursday, September 1, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with Rev. Dr. J. Samuel Subramanian officiating. Inurnment will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Kurt was born on November 13, 1963 in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Sterling and Norma (Oakland) Sprau. Kurt graduated from the Meservey-Thornton High School in 1982 and graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa in 1986. He passed his C.P.A. examination on his initial sitting in 1986. Kurt lived in Pella, Iowa until 1992, when he moved to Osage. He was currently employed as chief financial officer at Curries/Graham in Mason City.

Kurt was a member of the Iowa Society of CPAS. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Osage. Kurt was a loving father, who enjoyed coaching and attending his children's sporting events. He was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins fan. Kurt enjoyed playing poker and returning to help on the family farm.

Kurt is survived by two daughters, Amanda Sprau a student at Iowa State University in Ames and Casey Sprau at home; a son, Sterling Sprau at home; his mother, Norma Sprau of Mason City; a sister, Pam (Bob) Carlson of Meservey; a brother, Scott (Jenee) Sprau of Meservey; six nieces and nephews; and a special relative, Zoe Myers of Meservey.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sterling Sprau in 1990.

Rueben Kroneman

August 31, 2005

Rueben Kroneman, 84, of St. Ansgar, died at his home on Sunday, August 28, 2005.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 31, at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Township, Osage, Iowa, with Rev. Wayne Ellingson and Aim Intern Irmgard Ellingson officiating. Burial was in the St. John's cemetery, Rock Township.

Rueben was born on July 9, 1921, on the family home place east of Grafton, Iowa, to Emil and Mary (Neuman) Kroneman. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Township, where he was a lifelong member. Rueben attended rural country school. Rueben was united in marriage to Betty June Lundene on June 26, 1949 at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, Iowa. They were married for 56 years and blessed with 6 children, 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Rueben served on various organizations at the church. He was also a 4-H Leader and served on the Mitchell County Co-op Board for 18 years. Rueben's vocation of farming and feeding cattle were also his hobby and passion. Upon semi-retirement in 1997, Rueben and Betty moved to their present home in St. Ansgar where Rueben still participated in farming as his health permitted.

Rueben is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Darwin (Vicky) Kroneman of Osage, Dennis Kroneman of Osage, James (Vicki) Kroneman of Osage, Marjean (Jeff) Gordon of St. Ansgar, Mark (Kristi) Kroneman of Clear Lake and Kathleen (Lance) Chandler of Belmond; grandchildren, Joshua Kroneman, Keith (Bonnie) Kroneman, Tim (MariAnn) Kroneman, Melinda (David) Penfold, Lori (Doug) Schonhorst, Lisa (Brian) Kruse, Katie Gordon, Jenni Kroneman, Jalissa Kroneman, Jordan Chandler and Stephanie Chandler; great-grandchildren, Nolan Schonhorst and Brenna Kruse; two brothers, Lloyd (Wilma) Kroneman of Grafton and Glen (Delores) Kroneman of Carpenter; one sister, Clara Ones of Osage; one sister-in-law, Twila Kroneman of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Laura Wilde, Grace Tabbert and Myrtle Miller; and brothers, Alvin Kroneman and George Kroneman.
