Daryl J. Greiman

Daryl
J. Greiman, 72, of Garner, died on Monday, September 3,
2012, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5:00 p.m., on
Wednesday, September 12, at the Garner Golf and Country
Club. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner is in charge of the
arrangements.
Daryl John Greiman, the son of Norman and Margaret (Engstler)
Greiman, was born on February 15, 1940 at Waterloo. He
graduated from the Garner-Hayfield High School in 1958 and
attended the University of Maryland. Daryl enlisted in the
U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Greece. He lived and
worked in Greece for fourteen years before returning to
Garner, where he lived on the Maple Hill Farm east of Garner
until his death. Daryl had worked in graphic design at Iowa
Mold Tooling and then opened his business, The Final Frame,
where he met and enjoyed his many customers.
Following retirement,
Daryl enjoyed good music, traveling, playing tennis and golf
and delivering trucks and motor homes.
He is survived by his companion, Barb Eisenmenger; a sister,
Linda (Jim) Rapp; three brothers, Patrick (Jane) Greiman,
Russell Greiman and Joseph Greiman; and several nieces and
nephews.
Daryl was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers,
Thomas and James Greiman; and a nephew, Joshua Greiman.

Ralph E. Muth
January 5, 1939 - September 3, 2012
Ralph
E. Muth, 73, of Garner, died on Monday, September 3, 2012,
at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday,
September 8, at the United Methodist Church in Garner, with
Rev. Paul Evans officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial
Park Cemetery in Mason City. Visitation will be held from
5-7:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in
Garner and will continue one hour prior to the services at
the church.
Ralph Eugene Muth, the son of Melvin and Bernice (Beery)
Muth, was born on January 5, 1939 at Mason City. He
graduated from the Mason City High School in 1958. On March
2, 1957, he married Marilyn Roth at the Little Brown Church
in Nashua. They lived on an acreage south of Mason City,
where they raised their three children. Marilyn passed away
on June 13, 1989. On February 20, 1993, he married Shirley
Burke of Rock Falls at the Old Stone Methodist Church in
Rock Falls. They made their home in Garner. Ralph was
employed at Case IH, John Deere, Power Pro in Belmond and
American Crane in Garner until his retirement. He then
worked part-time for Chuck and Tony Whitt until his health
failed him.
Ralph loved working on the
farm and fixing machinery. He enjoyed gardening, gun
collecting, camping, country western music, dancing, going
to antique tractor and car shows and also the Britt horse
show. Ralph liked to plant tomatoes and give to friends and
neighbors. He enjoyed fixing large family dinners and
especially spending time with his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He was a member of the United Methodist
Church in Garner and the Ventura Gun Club. He was also a Boy
Scout Leader for years.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Shirley of Garner; three
children, David (Brenda) Muth of Dougherty, Debora (Chuck)
Buland of Mason City and Janet (Chip) Francis of Oxford,
Iowa; step-daughter, Cindy (Terry) Stanley of Rock Falls;
grandchildren, David, Jr. (Natalie) Muth, Jim Buland
(friend, Kisha), Scott Buland (friend, Minnie), Shawn (Jill)
Buland, Amy (Lynn) Reihman and Stacy (Chris) Henley;
step-grandchildren, Jamie (Mike) Jensen and Joshua Stanley;
great-grandchildren, A.J., Madisen and Hannah Buland, Amelia
Reihman, Gracie and Landry Muth; step great-grandchildren,
Zachary Schmidt, Dylan, Reawna and Isabel Jensen, Gaven
Stanley, Shaylynn and Terrhyn Stanley-Kral; his step-mother,
Merilayne Muth of Mason City; two brothers, Roger (Bette)
Muth of Garner and Fred (Linda) Muth of Clear Lake; a
sister, Carol (Leon) Lewis of Vinton; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; and parents.

Lillian B. Thiemann
December 29, 1916 - September 11, 2012
Lillian
B. Thiemann, 95, of Clear Lake, died on Tuesday, September
11, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday,
September 17, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church,
with Rev. Bernie Colorado officiating. Inurnment will be in
the Ell Twp. Cemetery, Klemme. Visitation will be on Sunday,
from 3-5:00 p.m., at the funeral home and then one hour
before the services on Monday at the Church. Family suggests
memorials to the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
Lillian was born on December 29, 1916 in rural Garner, Iowa,
the daughter of Andrew and Anna (Meinecke) Brown. She
attended the Ventura Elementary School and graduated from
the Klemme High School in 1934. Lillian married Edwin
Thiemann on April 14, 1937, in her parent's home at
Thompson, Iowa. They took up residence on the Thiemann farm
near Klemme, where they farmed for 40 years. The farm just
recently was designated as a Century Farm. While living
there she was active at the Immanuel Reformed United Church
of Christ, where she served in the women’s ministry and was
a Sunday School Teacher. She was named a Master Farm Home
Maker in 1969 and was a member of the Hancock County
Historical Society, the ODO Homemaker's Club and a 4H
Leader. She and Edwin retired to Clear Lake in 1977, where
she was an active member of the Clear Lake United Methodist
Church, Garden Club and Crescent Club.
Lillian especially enjoyed writing and was an inspiration to
many as she wrote on topics such as heritage, growing up on
the farm and her faith. She enjoyed cooking and baking and
always wanted to have something on hand for the visitors she
loved to have stop by for a brief or extended visit.
Lillian is survived by her daughter, Joyce (Dale) Sorensen
of Clear Lake; daughter-in-law, Alice Thiemann of Davenport;
grandchildren, Mark Thiemann of Davenport, Sara (David
Schwellenbach) Thiemann of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Nathan
(Avery) TenHaken of Joice and Heather (Michael) Chapman of
Glendale, Arizona; step-grandchildren, Michael (Catherine)
Sorensen of Calabasas, California, Mark (Jenny) Sorensen of
Raleigh, North Carolina, John (Lynnette) Sorensen of West
Des Moines and Susan (Ben) Haupts of Waukee; six
great-grandchildren; eleven step great-grandchildren; and
two step great-great grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edwin; son, Larry
Thiemann; and three brothers, Leo, Percy and Donald Brown.
The
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Charles "Red" Baker
March 22, 1929 - September 15, 2012
Charles
R. "Red" Baker, 83, of Garner, died on Saturday, September
15, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday,
September 18, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner,
with Fr. Dennis Miller officiating. Visitation will be held
from 4-7:00 p.m., on Monday, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel
in Garner, with a Scriptural wake service at 7:00 p.m.
Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at
the church.
Charles Rolly "Red" Baker, the son of George and Lillie
(Spicer) Baker, was born on March 22, 1929 in Decatur
County, Iowa. He graduated from the Leon High School in
1947, where he participated in football. He continued his
education at the Iowa Barber College graduating in 1948. Red
made his living barbering for sixty-one years in towns in
the north Iowa area including Belmond, Klemme, Garner and
Britt. He was united in marriage to Romana "Skeets" Jacobs
in 1949 and they had four children. Skeets passed away in
January of 1983. In 1985, he married Rose Mae Pletcher at
the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They made their
home in Garner. On May 5, 2010, Rose Mae passed away.
Red enjoyed
his dog, Meiko, camping, dancing, traveling, telling jokes,
card playing, but most of all, barbering. Family was a very
important part of his life. Red had a huge zest for life and
wanted to experience everything that life had to offer. He
was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Garner
Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus.
Red is survived by his children, Barbara (Randy) Helps of
Grimes, Deb Baker of Urbandale, Mike Baker of Garner and Tim
(Sheri) Baker of Grimes; step-children, Lynn Pletcher of
Sacramento, California, LeAnn (George) Anderson of Belmond,
Perry (Trish) Pletcher of Garner, Darla Pletcher of Garner,
Brenda Stoner (fiancé, Jim Anderson) of Iowa City and Brad
(Joyce) Pletcher of Garner; grandchildren, Christopher (Eva)
Helps, Cali (Chris) Jermier, Lacey and Dylan Schmidt, Jacob
Baker, Lucas and Hanna Baker, Jesse Pletcher, Justin
(Heather) Helin, Holly (Shane) Fibikar, Jamin (Holly)
Anderson, Cody Fundermann, Ashley (Brett) Matern, Andrea
Ohrt (fiancé, AJ Youngblut), Alexis Farley, Taylor Stoner,
Lauren Stoner, Brandon (Melissa) Pletcher, Meagen (Jayson)
Jay and Courtney Pletcher; and twelve great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Skeets;
second wife, Rose Mae; and two sisters, Louise and Duen.

Paul Peterson
November 2, 1925 - September 18, 2012
Paul
Newell Peterson, 86, formerly of Nevada, Iowa, died on
Tuesdatm September 18, 2012, at the Concord Care Center in
Garner, Iowa.
A celebration of Paul's life will be held at 12:00 noon, on
Saturday, September 22, at Hickory Grove Lake, Oriole Ridge
Lodge in Colo, Iowa. Lunch will be provided. Graveside
burial of the cremains will be at 9:30 a.m., on Saturday,
September 22, in the Greenwood Cemetery, east of Ellsworth.
Paul was born on November 2, 1925 in Story City, Iowa. A
lifelong resident of Story County, he graduated from the
Randall High School. One of the hardest workers and family
provider, Paul was a proud farmer and a valued employee for
Story County Conservation. Paul loved spending time playing
his guitar at jam sessions, taking photographs, touring the
Story County countryside and reading farming magazines. Most
of all, he loved telling jokes.
Survivors include his daughters, MaryAnn (Dennis) Buske of
Garner, Marie Peterson-Weant of Mountain Home, Idaho and
Marjorie (Michael) Gabriel of Papillion, Nebraska;
daughter-in-law, Jayne Peterson of Montrose, Colorado;
granddaughters, Sara Dannettel Williams and Lora Buske;
grandsons, Eric Williams, Weston & Wyatt Weant, Christopher
Buske and grandchildren in Omaha, Nebraska; and thirteen
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents, Carl and Esther
Peterson; wife, Barbara Ann (Harris) Peterson; and son,
Marcus Paul Peterson.

Dustin VanLaningham
December 12, 1994 - September 22, 2012
Dustin
J. VanLaningham, 17, of Oelwein, Iowa, died on Saturday
evening, September 22, 2012, at the Mercy Hospital of
Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein.
Funeral
services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, September
27, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein, with Rev. Charis
Combs-Lay officiating. Visitation is from 4-9:00 p.m., on
Wednesday, September 26, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home
in Oelwein and for one hour prior to the services on
Thursday at the church. Interment will be in the Woodlawn
Cemetery, Oelwein. A memorial fund has been established in
his name at the Veridian Credit Union in Oelwein.
Dustin John
VanLaningham, was born on December 12, 1994 at Independence,
Iowa, the son of Christopher and Cindy (Everly) VanLaningham.
He was a senior at the Oelwein High School in Oelwein.
Dustin loved to draw, play guitar, hunt and fish. He also
loved spending time with his family and friends. Dustin will
be remembered as a “Jokester”.
Dustin is
survived by his parents, Christopher (Mari) VanLaningham of
Oelwein and Cindy (Jack) Nehl of Garner; siblings, David
VanLaningham of Oelwein, John Nehl of Cedar Rapids, Gretchen
Nehl of Cedar Rapids, Diana VanLaningham of Forest City,
Darci Wagner of Mason City, Jonah Nehl of Garner and Brianna
Sallee of Oelwein; paternal grandmothers, Diane VanLaningham
of Hazleton, Johnette Howell of Strawberry Point and Judy
Bear of Oelwein; maternal grandparents, Melvin Everly of
Charles City, Kathy Sickles of Manchester and Bill (Mary)
Nehl of Hazleton; paternal great-grandfathers, John Williams
of Strawberry Point and David (Bert) VanLaningham of
Independence; paternal great-grandmother, Evelyn Ohrt of
Ankeny; and other relatives and friends who loved him very
much.
He was
preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Harold
VanLaningham, Josephine Williams and Richard Howell.

Everett Tesene

John
Everett Tesene, 92, of Manly, died on Wednesday, September
26, 2012, at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday,
September 28, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly,
with Rev. John Gossman officiating. Burial will be in the
Clear Lake Cemetery, with military graveside honors
conducted by members of the Edward Tosel American Legion
Post #110 of Manly. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m.,
with a scriptural wake service at 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, at
the Bride Colonial Chapel in Manly.
John
Everett Tesene, was born on September 2, 1920 on a farm in
Clear Lake, the son of Roy and Mabel (Everett) Tesene. While
John was an infant, his father was struck by lightning and
killed while he was baling hay. John graduated from the
Mason City High School in 1939 and worked on the uncle’s
farm in Manly, until he enlisted in the Navy on December 15,
1942. John was stationed in Boston, Massachusetts and
Melville, Rhode Island for Motor Torpedo Boat training.
While in Boston, he met his future wife, Barbara Stevens on
a blind date. John spent three-and-one half years on a
Torpedo Boat, Squadron 5, in the South Pacific. While on
leave, he married Barbara on May 13, 1945, at the St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake. After his honorable
discharge on October 12, 1945, John farmed for eleven years
in the Manly and Mason City areas. In April 1958, John went
to work at the Farmers Coop in Manly were he worked for 27
years until his retirement on December 31, 1985. John also
enjoyed helping Dennis, his son-in-law work in the fields
during harvest.
John was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and
enjoyed family time spent with all his family. John enjoyed
playing cards, watching auto races on TV, reading traveling,
and camping. John and Barbara spent 16 years wintering in
Alamo, Texas. John was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Manly, charter member of the Manly Lions Club, a
member of the Edward Tosel American Legion Post #110 of
Manly, was on the RSVP advisory board for 6 years and former
president of the Manly Senior Center.
Those left to cherish his memory is his wife of 67 years,
Barbara; his children, Steve (Pat) Tesene of Clive, Patricia
(Gene) Bryant of St. Charles, Missouri, Roy (Connie) Tesene
of Garner, Kathy (Dennis) Kruger of Manly and Deb (Perley)
Holloway of Mason City; 18 grandchildren; 29
great-grandchildren; his sisters, Betty Jacobson of Clear
Lake and Beverly (Tom) Burnett of Northfield, Minnesota; his
brothers, Bob (Lea) Roberts of Ridgeway, Colorado and David
(Karen) Roberts of Falls Church, Virginia; sister-in-law,
Florence Cusick of Gloucester, Massachusetts; as well as
many nieces and nephews and many other extended family
members and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mabel
(Roberts) Tesene; and a grandson, Scott Christeson.
The Bride Colonial Chapel of Manly, was in charge of the
arrangements.

Duane
Malek
October 3, 2012
Duane
Malek, 62, passed away on Friday, September 28, 2012, at
the home that he so lovingly built for himself and his
wife Bev, surrounded by family and friends.
A Mass
of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, October 2, at
10:30 a.m., at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in
Duncan, with Rev. Paul Lipstock and Rev. Dennis Miller
being concelebrants. Burial was in the St. John’s
Cemetery in Duncan. Visitation was on Monday, October 1,
from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in
Britt. A Knights of Columbus rosary was said at 7:00
p.m. Visitation continued for one hour prior to the
services at the church.
Duane was born in Mason City on April 22, 1950, to
Ernest and Clara (Drabek) Malek. He grew up in the
Duncan area and attended school at Hayfield and then
later Garner-Hayfield, where he graduated in 1968.
He married Bev Hesley on August 1, 1970 in Duncan.
They lived on a farm by Britt when first married and
then moved to Wesley, where he worked for the K&H
Coop. Three kids later, they decided to move to
Duncan and made that their home for the past 35
years. Duane started working construction when they
moved to Duncan, walking in the same footsteps of
his father and grandfather. Duane started his own
construction business in 1987, Duane Malek
Construction, and worked as a general contractor for
25 years. He was a true craftsman and took much
pride in his work which can be seen throughout the
community.
He
was a hardworking, strong, honest and humble man who
was adored and respected by many. He loved to laugh,
spend time with family and friends and to share
stories, of which there were many. He was always
giving of his time and talents to help others. He
enjoyed fishing, building, landscaping, gardening,
had an enormous sense of curiosity, and loved
finding solutions to problems. He was very active in
his church, St. Wenceslaus in Duncan, where he was a
member for 62 years, and he was a charter member of
the Britt Knights of Columbus.
He
is survived by his father, Ernest Malek; his wife,
Bev; three children and spouses, Jason Malek and his
wife, Amy, Jeremy Malek and Jen Swearingen and her
husband, Mike; five grandchildren, Taylor, Logan,
Kaitlyn, Madison and Parker; three sisters, Darlene,
Bev and Diane; three brothers, Gary, Ed and Marvin;
and many nieces and nephews.
He
was preceded in death by his mother, Clara Malek;
his nephew, Brent; and three brothers-in-law, John
Roberts, Bill Edington and Steve Hesley.
