Nettie Marie Eden
February 15, 1927 - August 8, 2012

Nettie M. Eden, 85, of Woden, died on Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, August 11, at the First Presbyterian Church in Woden, with Rev. Dr. Glenn Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Bingham Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church.

Nettie Marie Eden, the daughter of George and Jennie (Bruns) Eden, was born on February 15, 1927 on a farm near Woden. She attended school in Woden and graduated from high school in 1946. Nettie lived on the family farm caring for her parents and siblings. After her mother's death in 1976, she continued the farming operation with her brother, Calvin. In 1984, she moved into Woden.

She enjoyed cooking and gardening. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Woden, UPW and taught Sunday School for twenty-five years.

Nettie is survived by her brother, Calvin of Britt; two sisters, Delores (John) Hansen of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Della Manning of Mesa, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Darlene Eden Klasse of Forest City; two nieces; and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Jeanette Mary Eden; brothers, Harold Eden and Glen (Mary) Eden; and a brother-in-law, Curtis Post.

Robert "Bob" Ollenburg
August 24, 1926 - August 13, 2012

Robert "Bob" Ollenburg, 85, of Ventura, died on Monday, August 13, 2012, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, August 15, at the St. John's Lutheran Church east of Garner, with Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Visitation will be held from 4-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the St. John's Lutheran Church.

Robert Emil Ollenburg, was born on August 24, 1926, to parents Emil and Olga (Boehnke) Ollenburg on the family farm near St. John's Corner, rural Ventura. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. John's Lutheran Church. He attended elementary school at St. John's Parochial School and graduated in 1944 from the Ventura Community High School. He enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served as a tank sergeant in the Korean Conflict. On November 28, 1951, Bob married Elaine Lovick. He farmed and milked cows until his heart attack at age 33. He then worked in the Hancock County Engineers Office for 18 years before purchasing his car dealership, Ollenburg Motors. Anyone who knew Bob well knew of his passion for nice cars. He was very proud to be a member of the National Chrysler Advertising Board.

Bob was an active member of the Garner community, serving as the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce Presidents. Throughout his life Bob was a loyal member of St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Garner. He was the congregational president, vice president and treasurer, but his favorite position for over 18 years was that of Sunday School Superintendent. Bob loved kids and kids felt the same about him. Over the years Bob remained close with his Army buddies and attended many reunions, including one in Hong Kong and Korea.

Bob enjoyed spending summers at the cottage in Clear Lake and winters in Mission, Texas. He always said that his favorite places to be were on his porch at the acreage, his deck in Clear Lake and patio in Texas (with a cigar in hand of course.) Bob enjoyed being with family and friends and his homes were always the center of wonderful get-togethers. Bob had many heart related health issues over the years, but he always fought back and never let it get him down for long. He was grateful for the blessings life had given him. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He set a good example for the rest of us.

Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elaine; children, Sherry and Tim Becker of Mason City, Scott and Karen Ollenburg of Ventura, Kim and Bill Larson of Clear Lake, Jeanne Ollenburg of Savannah, Georgia and Dan and Kristen Ollenburg of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Ben Becker and Stacy Smith, Rex Ollenburg and Dani Breitkreutz, Emily and Thomas Zanios, Grant and Amber Larson, Renee and Matt Washburn, Christopher Ollenburg, Zachary Becker, Bridget Ollenburg, Kathryn Ollenburg, Sophia Ollenburg, Ava Ollenburg, Henry Ollenburg and Ella Ollenburg; great-grandchildren, Natalie Washburn, Eliza Zanios, Noah, Parker and Haley Larson and Piper and Keely Breitkreutz; his sister, Darlene and Rev. James Wolfram of Spirit Lake; two brothers-in-law, James and Alvera Lovick of Fertile and Leo and Marlys Lovick of Ackley; four sisters-in-law, Alice Toresdahl of Clear Lake, Doris Bonnstetter of Chapin, South Carolina, Anita Lovick of Washington, Iowa and Diane Lovick of Forest City; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his son, Reece; parents, Emil and Olga Ollenburg; in-laws, Henry and Ida Lovick; brothers-in-law, Paul and Gladys Lovick, Ardie Lovick, Gordon Toresdahl, Larry Lovick and Frank Bonnstetter; sisters-in-law, Amy and Don Brakke, Irene and Harvey Brakke, Pearl and Raymond Hanna and Murlette and Gilman Hagen.

Loretta Jahnke Armstrong
July 7, 1918 - August 14, 2012

Loretta V. Jahnke Armstrong, 94, of Garner, died on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, August 17, at the United Methodist Church in Garner, with Rev. Paul Evans officiating. Burial will be in the Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church.

Loretta Verlee Jahnke Armstrong, the daughter of Earl and Lillian (Velau) Kahler, was born on July 7, 1918 at Klemme. She attended the Twin Lakes Township No. 3 country school near Klemme and ninth grade in Klemme. On August 20, 1937, she was married to Fred Jahnke at the Methodist Parsonage in Garner. They lived in Garner where they raised their two children. Loretta was employed at Roe's Super Value, the Garner A & W and also helped Fred in their trucking business until his death in 1966. On August 15, 1970, she was married to Delos Armstrong at the United Methodist Church in Garner. They made their home in Clear Lake. In August of 2004, Loretta moved to Cardinal Grove in Garner.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, fishing, square dancing, the color red, traveling and wintering at Mission, Texas for twenty years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Loretta is survived by her two children, Ronald (Ruth) Jahnke of Cedar Rapids and Judy Whitfield of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Michael (Raquel) Jahnke of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Kimberly (David) Ackley of Ft. Myers, Florida, Michelle Magwood of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Patricia Whitfield of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Elaine Whitfield of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and Mike (Lauren) Whitfield of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Jackson of Lakeville, Minnesota; three step-children, Robert (Sally) Armstrong of Detroit, Michigan, Paul (Linda) Armstrong of Des Moines and Irene (Lyle) Alshouse of Dubuque; and several step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Fred and Delos; two sisters, Alice Gruben and Amelia Smidt; a son-in-law, Lonnie Whitfield; and a step-son, James Armstrong.

Frederick O. Bell

August 29, 2012

Frederick O. Bell, age 89, a lifelong resident and farmer in the Klemme area, died on Thursday, August 23, 2012, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, August 27, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme. The Reverend Donna Buckman officiated. Burial with full military honors, was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. Visitation was on Monday, at the Andrews Funeral Home, Klemme and continued prior to the services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the family, Immanuel Reformed UCC Church or to the donor's choice.

Frederick Orville Bell, the son of Fred and Elsie (Henschen) Bell was born on August 1, 1923, on the farm in rural Gamer, Ell Township, Iowa. His mother passed away when he was one and he was raised for most of his childhood by his grandparents, the Henschens. Fred was confirmed in the Immanuel Reformed Church in his youth. He was active in the Ell Reformed Church (today's Peace Reformed Church, south of Gamer). He attended rural Hancock County Schools and later Klemme High School where he graduated with the class of 1941.

Following his education Frederick enlisted in he United States Army serving during WW II. He spent parts of his military tenure in the United States, Japan, and Pearl Harbor. Upon completing his military service, he was united in marriage to Lula Arlene Peterson, The Rev. Groscious at the Immanuel Reformed Church, Klemme, on January 20, 1949. Following their marriage the couple farmed and raised their family east of Klemme. Their union was blessed with four children: son, William "Bill", daughter Elsie, son, Lynn, and a daughter Eva. The couple farmed for 53 years together. In addition to farming for themselves, Fred had also drove tanker truck for a time, and had done custom farming and baling for many area farmers over the years.

Fred and Lula moved into the town of Klemme in August 2004 and have resided there since.

Throughout his life Frederick had a very active faith and served his church in many roles. He had served for many years as a deacon, usher, and had been on the church consistory in various roles. In earlier years Fred had been involved as a leader in 4-H. He loved to dance and over the years could be found tooling about the dance floor in ballroom venues such as the Surf and the Duncan Ballrooms. Frederick and Lula enjoyed spectating at many of the events of their grandkids activities and sporting events. They relished each and every opportunity to be there to watch and support them.

Fred was also known to have a competitive side to him. During winter months he looked forward to times spent around the pool table or ping-pong table with his children and grandchildren. He truly enjoyed playing Pinochle and a challenging intense game of Dominoes. Fred and the grandkids shared some wonderful times around the card table over the years, as he often would tell them, "I'll beat you at a game of cards!". Fred was a lifelong member of the Garner VFW Post and the Klemme American Legion.

His memory and legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of his wife and life partner of 63 years, Lula Bell of Klemme; his son, William "Bill" (Joleyne) Bell of Klemme, daughter, Elsie (Keith) Frohwein of Zearing, son, Lynn (Dayle) Bell of Klemme and daughter, Eva (Lester) Schnabel of Sheffield; sisters, Julia Gordon of Rowan and Ruth Marchant of Kanawha; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Lisa (Robby) Smith, Stephanie (Jeff) Baker, Travis (Deb) Bell, Brandon (Jo) Frohwein, Todd (Tara) Frohwein, Dennis (Callie) Frohwein, April (Steven) Watson, Paula Schnabel, Matthew Schnabel, Laura Schnabel, Rebecca Schnabel, Christopher (Tera) Bachman, Danielle (Nick) Neubauer and Nikka (Donn) Ashland; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; his parents; great-granddaughter, Shelby Jo Smith; and three brothers-in-law, Dutch "Junior" Pringnitz, Dick Marchant and Lloyd Gordon.

Delores A. Barrett
June 19, 1927 - August 24, 2012

Delores Agnes Barrett, 85, of Garner, died on Friday, August 24, 2012, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, August 28, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, with Fr. Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m., on Monday, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Scriptural wake service. Memorials may be directed to the family.

She is survived by her children, Tim (Deb) Seckar of Newton, Lillian (Glenn) Abelson of Zimmerman, Minnesota, DoLoras Demaray of Cedar Falls, Ann Johnston of Klemme, Lisa (Steve) Colby of Owatonna, Minnesota and Philip Seckar of Smithfield, North Carolina; eleven grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Fink of Nora Springs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Seckar, Jr.; a daughter, Kathy Jo; and five siblings.

Harold "Bud" Haugen
September 16, 1928 - August 27, 2012

Harold Junior "Bud" Haugen, 83, of Woden, died on Monday, August 27, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, September 6, at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden, with Revs. Bob Wolfert and Jon Rollefson officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Lutheran Cemetery, rural Woden, with military rites by the Woden Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Visitation will be from 4:30-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church.

Harold Junior "Bud" Haugen, was born on September 16, 1928, to Ole Haugen and Elizabeth (Gjertson) Haugen on a farm north of Woden. He was baptized and confirmed at the Grant Lutheran Church, rural Woden. He attended rural schools in Winnebago County. Bud did farm work until he was 17 years old when he enlisted in the Navy. He was stationed in San Diego, California, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Shanghai, China, serving four years. For several years Bud did road construction work. He later worked for the Woden Co-op Elevator and worked for 23 years doing concrete work for North Iowa Grain in Garner, until he retired.

Bud enjoyed bowling, going to tournaments, fishing in Canada, watching Western movies and the History channel. He especially enjoyed spending time and playing cards with his nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He is survived by three sisters and four brothers, Gerdis Haugen of Woden, Russell (Colleen) Haugen of Thompson, Alice (Gunter) Walkusch of Loveland, Colorado, John (Debra) Haugen of Klemme, Betty (Norris) Anderson of Thompson, Donald (Liv) Haugen of Bergen, Norway and Ole Haugen of Los Angeles, California. Buddy was very much loved by his nieces and nephews, Julie Haugen, Colleen Walkusch, John (Denise) Walkusch, Deanna Haugen, Diana Myers, James (Tuesday) Haugen, Nancy (David) Moklestad, Jason (Laura) Haugen, Elizabeth Ann Haugen (Thomas Calder) and Cathrine Haugen; great-nieces and nephews, Ryan Keck, Sean and Logan Mayfield, Jonathan Burress, Samantha Haugen, Megan Moklestad, Alexis and Nicholas Myers, Alexander and Joshua Haugen, Samuel and William Haugen, Albert Calder, Dawn (Alex) Zaharis, Annah, Kadence and Harper Sue Zaharis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Bernice; brother, Elliott; and sister-in-law, Gloria Haugen.

Delores Hrubes
August 25, 1954 - August 27, 2012

Delores Ann Hrubes, 58, of Britt, died on Monday, August 27, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 5:00 p.m., on Friday, August 31, at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner, with Pastor Brian Lund officiating. Visitation will be held from 2-4:30 p.m., on Friday, at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa or the Hancock County Health Services. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner, is in charge of the arrangements.

Delores Ann Hrubes, the youngest of four children of Orval and Pearl (Haes) Barkema, was born on August 25, 1954 in Belmond. She graduated from the Garner-Hayfield High School in 1972. After high school she worked for Winnebago Industries in Forest City. She met her husband, Dean, at a Duncan Hall dance and they were united in marriage on December 10, 1977 at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner. They lived on a farm south of Duncan all of their married life. Besides raising their three children, Delores also helped out on the farm.

She was active with her children's activities being a 4-H Leader, chaperone and a football mom. Delores' other passions in her life were playing cards, organizing photos, fishing and driving her John Deere tractors. She was a member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan and Rosary Society.

Delores is survived by her husband, Dean of Britt; three children, Sheri Hrubes of Mason City, Amanda (Andy) Martin of Mason City and their two children, Brayden and Kinley and Chuck Hrubes of Garner; her mother, Pearl Barkema of Garner; three siblings, Ed (Chery) Barkema of Garner, Phyllis (Paul) Spade of Goodell and Ivan (Pam) Barkema of Bruel, Wisconsin; mother-in-law, Margaret Hrubes of Garner; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Boho of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and Diane (Bill) Elling of Estherville; two brothers-in-law, David (Sharon) Hrubes of Fort Dodge and Gerry Hrubes of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Orval Barkema; father-in-law, John Hrubes; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Vernon Jurgemeyer

September 5, 2012

Vernon Jurgemeyer, age 67, of St. James, Minnesota, died on Thursday, August 30, 2012, at the Mayo Clinic Health System-St. James.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, September 5, at the First Lutheran Church in St. James, with the Revs. Christian Johnson and Ken Bowman officiating. Visitation was on Tuesday, from 4-8:00 p.m., at the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James and will continue one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Concord Cemetery at Garner.

Memorials may be directed to the St. James Ambulance or St. James Hospital Foundation.

Vernon Alfred Jurgemeyer, was born on June 26, 1945 at Garner, Iowa, the son of Alfred William Jurgemeyer and Gladys Louise (Meinders) Jurgemeyer. He graduated from the Klemme High School, Klemme in 1963. Vern then received his B.S. Degree in Dairy Science from Iowa State University in February 1967. Vern was an active member of 4-H and the ISU Dairy Judging Team, served as an IFYE Ambassador to Israel in 1967 and started farming in 1967. On August 23, 1970, Vern was united in marriage to Diane M. Feldt in Garner. In May 1985, Vern became an Ag Lender with the Farmers Home Administration in Garner, moving to the Hancock National Bank of Garner in 1990. In 1995, Vernon started work at Odin State Bank in Odin, Minnesota and in 2004, began working as the Ag Loan Officer at First National Bank in St. James.

Vern was a member of the St. James Chapter of Rotary International, Minnesota Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association and the First Lutheran Church, where he had served as a council member.

Vern is survived by his wife, Diane Marie Jurgemeyer of St. James, Minnesota; daughters, Raquel (Mike) Linch of Creston, Karla Jurgemeyer of Northfield; his mother, Gladys Jurgemeyer of Garner; two grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Egon Weaver of Boone.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Jurgemeyer; and a sister, Elaine Weaver.

Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James, Minnesota.
