George R. Mikesh, 1924-2005

January 12, 2005

George R. Mikesh of Belmond, died on Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at the Mercy Hospital in Mason City. He was 80.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 9, 2005, at the Belmond United Methodist Church. The Rev. Michael Druhl officiated. Burial was in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Goodell, with full military honors provided by the Belmond Area Military Funeral Squad. The Andrews Funeral Home of Belmond was in charge of the arrangements. The family suggests memorials to the Belmond United Methodist Church, Goodell United Methodist Church, Belmond Area Arts Council Prairie Homestead or to the donor's choice.

George Richard Mikesh, was born on May 20, 1924, in the Klemme area. He was the son of Charles and Kathlyn (Pannhoff) Mikesh. The family moved to the Forest City area, and from there to Belmond where he finished his last two years of high school.

George served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the 63rd Division, 254 Infantry Regiment attached to the 3rd Army in France and Germany. George received the following military medals: Bronze Star Medal With "V" Device, First Oak-Leaf Cluster to the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars for the Rhineland and Central European Campaigns, World War II Victory Medal, Distinguished Unit Emblem, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, and Combat Infantryman Badge, Presidential Unit Citation and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm for Colmar and the Battle of the Bulge.

At the end of the war, he was sent to Berlin as Cadre to set up the Office of Military Government for the Berlin Sector. He served as honor guard and received training in military intelligence. In 1947, he was discharged from the Army. He joined the Civil Service as Deputy Chief Warden at Spandau Prison in Berlin. He returned home after his father's death in 1949.

George was united in marriage to Emily Goll in 1955. He farmed near Hickory Grove north of Belmond. George enjoyed farming and the challenges it presented. Following his retirement in 1989, he enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, auctions, inventive cooking, and nature watching. He also enjoyed polka music and photography. George was an avid reader and loved a good debate.

George spoke highly of his parents and the values that they taught him. He also had an unselfish nature for helping others in need.

Survivors include his wife of over 49 years, Emily of Belmond; children, Sheila Johnson of California, Kim Campbell of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, George Mikesh Jr. and wife, Sarai of Atlanta, Georgia, Michael Mikesh of Goodell and Suzanne Mikesh of Belmond.

Survivors also include sisters, Colona Hahn of Belmond, Ruby Dwyer of Harper's Ferry, Constance Roley of Minnesota, Gladys Pals and husband, Pete of Belmond; brother, Charles Mikesh and wife, Wanda of Belmond; grandchildren, Lesley, Rebecca, and Kandiss Campbell, James and Joseph Mikesh, Lynne and Christopher J. Akin, Tracy Mikesh and Amber (Mikesh) Powell and Kathlyn and Rachal.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Kathlyn Mikesh; and his sister, Grace Zaspel.

Fred Weiss, 1920-2005

January 12, 2005

Fred Weiss, 84, of Mason City, formerly of Garner, died on Thursday, January 6, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 10, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City. The Rev. Mark Lavrenz officiated. Interment was in the Concord Cemetery, Garner, with military honors conducted by members of the Garner Veteran Ceremonial Unit. Memorials may be directed to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City and the Hospice of North Iowa.

Fred Weiss was born on September 29, 1920 in Selby, South Dakota. He was the son of Gust and Katie (Riddle) Weiss. Fred served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

On January 14, 1945, he was united in marriage to Vera (Woiwod) Weiss and to this union two children were born. After returning from active duty, Fred farmed near Garner. He also worked and retired from Winnebago Industries. He spent his retirement years woodworking and refinishing projects. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City and the V.F.W. Post 5515 in Garner.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Weiss of Mason City; daughters, Sharon (Art) Hitz and Linda (John) Hamilton; grandsons, Jeff (Jennifer) Hamilton and Bryan Hitz; three sisters; and one brother.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; three brothers; one infant daughter; and two infant grandsons.

Gertrude C. Flood, 1912-1930

January 12, 2005


Gertrude C. Flood, of Garner, died on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at the Concord Care Center, Garner. She was 92.

Her funeral was held on Tuesday, January 11, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Lector was Pat Doble. Music was provided by organist, Carolyn Kumsher who accompanied the church choir. Ushers were Robert Kral and Lawrence Engstler. Casket bearers were Dan Kadrlik, Thomas Kadrlik, Michael Naig, Matt Naig, Jayme Lentz, Kris Bro and Bill Pappas. Burial was in the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Gertrude Cecilia Flood, the daughter of Michael Henry and Katherine Gertrude (Engstler) Tobin, was born on January 10, 1912, at Garner. She graduated from the Garner High School in 1930 and that fall began work in the office of the Hancock County Recorder in Garner. She worked in the recorder's office until 1939, when she began her duties in the office of the Hancock County Abstract Company, a position she held until she retired in 1976.

On September 9, 1969, she was married to Daniel E. Flood at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. Gertrude enjoyed reading and her church and club activities. She was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church, CD of A, Rosary Society, Contesters Club, Progressive Club and several card clubs.

Gertrude is survived by her niece, Sandra Naig and her husband, Terry of Cylinder; great-nieces and nephews, Melissa Naig Lentz and her husband, Jayme of Iowa Falls, Matthew Naig and his wife, Carrie and their daughter, Madison of Peoria, Illinois, Michael Naig and his wife, Jaime of Des Moines and Marsha Bro and husband, Kris of Des Moines; her step-daughter, Catherine Kadrlik of Garner; step-grandson, Daniel Kadrlik and his wife, Lori and their three children, Thomas, Kendra and Riannan of Garner; two step-granddaughters, Debra Bannister and her husband, Randy and their daughter, Miranda of Crystal Lake and Debra's daughter, Ryen Kothenbeutel and her daughter, Brianna of Forest City and Polly Kothenbeutel and her children, Amber and Kory of Sheffield.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel on October 17, 1983; her father, Michael in 1962; her mother, Kate, in 1975; a brother, Joseph L. Tobin and his wife, Virginia; a sister, Katherine, who died in infancy; and her step son-in-law, Wencl Kadrlik.

Catherine Hiscocks, 1937-2005

January 19, 2005

Catherine "Kay" Hiscocks, 67, died on Sunday, January 9, 2005, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, January 12, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt. The Rev. Michael Schuller and the Rev. Jerry Kopacek officiated. Irene Raber and Becky McCormick were lectors. Music was provided by organist, Brenda Smith who accompanied song leader, Darla Yeakel and flute soloist, Barbara Brcka. Allan Doughan and Roger Jacobson ushered.

Honorary casket bearers were Jeffrey Haan and Ted Smith. Casket bearers were Monte Bill Hiscocks, Michael Hiscocks, David Hiscocks, Lisa Loecher and Carmen Jamtgaard. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. The Ewing-Dugger Funeral Home of Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Catherine Elizabeth Hiscocks, was born on May 1, 1937 in Duncan. She was the daughter of William J. and Blanche B. (Kopacek) Paca. She attended the Garner High School where she majored in office training. She was employed at Maben Insurance her senior year for on the job training and after graduating in 1955 started working at the First State Bank in Britt.

She married Monte B. Hiscocks on April 22, 1958, at the St. Wenceslaus Church in Duncan. They lived and worked on a farm South of Britt. She was a 60-year member of the Catholic Workman and was a very active member of St. Patrick's Church in Britt.

Kay loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed Thursday morning coffee clatch, her card club groups and outings with friends. Kay lived her life with a strong faith, genuine kindness, compassion and thoughtfulness for others.

Survivors include her children, Monte William of Britt, Michael and his wife, Elisabeth (Lisa) of Plano, Texas, David and his wife, Hanh of Katy, Texas, Lisa Loecher and her husband, Ron of Cedar Falls and Carmen Jamtgaard and her husband, Mark of Britt; eight grandchildren, Cory, Zachary and Emma Hiscocks, Ty Hiscocks, Isaac, Luke and Cael Loecher and Katherine Jamtgaard.

Also surviving are her mother, Blanche Paca of Britt; four sisters, Marjorie Hansen and her husband, Ronald of Britt, Irene Raber and her husband, Jan of Kanawha, Rita Haan and her husband, Ralph of Richmond, Minnesota and Becky McCormick and her husband, Paul of Rollingstone, Minnesota; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Monte; and her father, William.

Arthur G. Wilhelm, 1923-2005

January 19, 2005

Arthur G. Wilhelm, of Harmony, Minnesota, died on Sunday, January 9, 2005, at the Cresco Care Center. He was 81.


Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 12, at the Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony. The Rev. Donald Schmitz officiated.

Arthur Wilhelm, was born on December 2, 1923, in Waucoma. He farmed most of his life except for two years driving a semi-trailer for Hubbard Milling of Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his wife, Sadie; three daughters, Diane (Larry) Anderson of Ostrander, Minnesota, Denise Schultz of Lanesboro, Minnesota and Angela (Kyle) Colbenson of Rushford; two sons, Rich (Judy) of Garner and Michael (Lisa) of Preston, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a son.

Services Held For Justin Meier

January 19, 2005

Justin Lee Meier, infant son of Gerry and Angie Meier of Garner, entered into rest on Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Justin were held on Tuesday, January 18, at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt. The Rev. David Wagner officiated. Burial was in the Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Justin is survived by his parents, Gerry and Angie Meier of Garner; sister, Jennifer Regan of Garner; brother, Jacob Meier of Garner; grandmother, Lannie Hartema of Garner; aunts and uncles, Becky and Terry Newberry of Pontoonsuc, Illinois, Helen and Kent Kehlenbeck of West Des Moines, Mary Meier of Waterloo, Phillip and Kathy Norris of LaPorte City, Jeff and Tosha Regan of Lughoff, South Carolina, Todd Regan of Mason City, Mary Peterson of Garner and Chris Ditmars of Garner; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Earl and Dorothea Meier; grandfather, Kenneth Regan; and uncle, Henry Meier.

John J. Liska, 1923-2005

January 19, 2005


John J. Liska, 81, of Hayfield, died on Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 15, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with Fr. Michael Schueller officiating. Lectors were Mike Liska and Tom Lucke. Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who accompanied the church choir. Mary Ricke and Melvin Wellik ushered.

Casket bearers were Travis Jorgensen, Kelly Bohl, Cody Liska, Cory Lucke, Jay Olson, Missy Liska and Emily Lucke. Interment will be at a later date in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Duncan. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner was in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hospice of North Iowa.

John Junior Liska, the son of John Anton and Mary Eleanore (Chizek) Liska, was born on April 29, 1923, on a farm north of Duncan. He attended the Hayfield Consolidated School.

On January 23, 1946, he married Agnes Brcka at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. They lived in Duncan where John was employed at the Brcka General Store. They later moved to a farm near Crystal Lake where he farmed and did custom work in the area. In 1967, they moved to their home in Hayfield. John also had a trucking business, which he operated until 1984.

He enjoyed his family, fishing, gardening, playing cards, old time music and dancing. He was a member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

John is survived by his wife, Agnes, of Hayfield; seven children, Dan Liska of Fort Dodge and his two children, Jamie and Missy, Linda (Tom) Lucke of Lancaster, Wisconsin and their three children, Ryan, Emily and Cory, Mary (Rick) Bohl of Cedaredge, Colorado and their two children, Kelly and Teri, Beverly (John) Olson of Forest City and their three children, Angie, Jay and Rhonda, Jim (Jackie) Liska of Kingman, Arizona and their son, Travis, Mike (Carla) Liska of Britt and their two sons, Cody and Andy and Larry (Rose) Liska of Wimberley, Texas and their son, Noah; and four great-grandchildren, Remington, Austin, Natalie and Trevor.

Survivors also include two brothers, Walter Liska of Sun City, California and Cletus (Marjorie) Liska of Clear Lake; two sisters, Rosemary Schroeder of Anaheim, California and Barbara (Lewis) Nedved of Garner; a sister-in-law, Marian Liska of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leo and Donald Liska; sisters, Veronica Thada and Doris Fosdick; and many other relatives.

Shirley Holck, 1931-2005

January 19, 2005


Shirley Jean Holck, 73, of Britt, died on Friday, January 14, 2005, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 19, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Britt. Rev. Dr. John Meyer and Janelle Siffring, AiM will officiate.

Music will be provided by organist, Donna Tech, who will accompany congregational hymns. Ushers will be Ron Eden and Don Weiland. Honorary casket bearers will be Shirley's grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Active bearers will be Todd Johnson, Torry Johnson, Charlie Lundberg, Dwight Nall, Troy Holck, John Hanna, Nick Veldhouse and Doug Bauer. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt, with the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home of Britt in charge of the arrangements.

Shirley, the daughter of Clarence and Sylvia Applegate Nall, was born on February 13, 1931, in Corwith. On August 7, 1963, Shirley was united in marriage with Maynard Holck in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The couple made their home near Britt. She was employed by Winnebago Industries in Forest City for a time and later at Casey's General Store in Britt, making donuts.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, attending their sporting events and dining out. Shirley was a gracious host and an excellent cook and baker. She also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, bowling, taking drives and golfing. She was an avid gardener and especially liked to mow the lawn. Shirley was well known for her sewing and quilting.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Britt and the church's Ladies Circle Group. Shirley was President of the Senior Citizens, a Rebekah and a member of The Red Hat Society.

Shirley is survived by her children, Gene Veldhouse and his wife, Mary of Nampa, Idaho, Richard Veldhouse of Danville, California, Dan Veldhouse and his wife, Deb of Britt, Doug Veldhouse of St. Paul, Minnesota, Curtis Holck and his wife, Sondra of Mason City, Mark Holck and his wife, Jodi of Clear Lake and Mona Bauer and her husband, Ron of Britt; 16 grandchildren, Nick, China, Marquita, Jennifer, Kathryn, Natalie, Nicole, Jaime, Jessica, Cody, Chelsey, Macey, Sonya, Doug, Rob and Emma; and four great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by two brothers, Kenneth Nall and his wife, Virginia of Salem, Oregon and Richard Nall and his wife, Betty of Corwith; two sisters, Lucille Kennedy and her husband, Calvin of Salem, Oregon and Phyllis Mount and her husband, George of Claremont, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maynard in 2000; and one grandson.

Sherman A. Ekeland, 1922-2005

January 26, 2005

Sherman Adrian Ekeland, 82, of rural Belmond, died on Thursday, January 13, 2005, at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 16, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Belmond, the Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson officiated. Music was provided by organist, Marlys Nail who accompanied vocalists, Lori Mathahas, Lisa Sweet and Terra Johnson and congregational hymns. Merlyn and Marcella Halvorson ushered.

Casket bearers were Clifford Toft, Jim Moore Jr., Paul Rokke, Mike Snider, Tom Hill, and Mike Lette. Honorary bearers were Mr. Ekeland's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burial was in the St. Olaf Cemetery, Belmond. The Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home of Belmond was in charge of the arrangements.

Sherman A. Ekeland, was born on April 15, 1922 in Kelly. He was the son of Hans and Karina (Westvold) Ekeland. He graduated from the Kelly High School. In 1941, the family moved to a farm north of Clarion.

On August 20, 1966, he married Gladys Anderson Johnson. He was a member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church where he served as trustee and usher for many years. Sherman continued to farm until his health began to decline. He enjoyed being outdoors, farming, and spending time with his family. Because of Parkinson's disease, he resided at the Belmond Health Care Home for the last four years of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys; two step-sons, Edwin Johnson of Belmond and Alfred Johnson and his wife, Donna of Kanawha; five grandchildren, Laurie Mathahs and husband, Jeff of Garner, Lisa Sweet and her husband, Matt of Cedar Rapids, Brent Johnson and his wife, Terra of Clarion, Rene Retterath and her husband, Dan of Elma and Darren Johnson of Clarion; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Survivors also include a brother, Erwin Ekeland and his wife, Anita of Parker, Colorado; sister-in-law, Tillie Ekeland of Newton, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Ann Johnson of Belmond; and several nieces and nephews.

Donald Pletcher, 1928-2005

January 26, 2005

Donald Pletcher, 76, of Britt, died on Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 21, at the United Methodist Church, Britt. The Rev. Robert Dodge officiated. Music was provided by Tammy Johnson who accompanied vocalist, Darcy Eisenman. Harry Smith and Dennis Zuehl were ushers.

Honorary casket bearers were Mr. Pletcher's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Active casket bearers were John Pletcher, Ron Pletcher, Scott Gilbert, Todd Hildman, Eric Eisenman, Rod Crowder, Al Heginger and Richard Savoy. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. Military graveside services were provided by the Britt Veteran's Ceremonial Unit. The Ewing-Dugger Funeral Chapel of Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Don Pletcher, the son of Lloyd and Florence (Hecker) Pletcher, was born on July 25, 1928 in Ada, Minnesota. The family later moved to Iowa where he attended the Hayfield Schools and then farmed with his father. Don served with the U.S. Army from 1946 until 1948.

Don was united in marriage with Vivian Riekena on July 31, 1947 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. The couple made their home in the Britt area and lived in their current home for 49 years. Through the years, Don worked for Kabrick Distributing, Sankey's, Buns and Son Construction, Clark's Sawmill and Winnebago Industries. He retired from Winnebago in 1984. He owned and operated various businesses in Britt including Don's Hob Nob, The Krispie Shop, The Timber Inn and Don's Koffee Kup. In recent years he enjoyed running the Little Red Shack at the Hancock County Speedway.

Don loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed cutting and splitting wood and tinkering in his garage. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed visiting with people. He was a member of the Britt American Legion and VFW.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Vivian; six children, Diane Eisenman of Britt, Linda Hildman of Britt, John Pletcher and special friend, Darlene Weber of Britt, Connie Pletcher of Mason City, Bonnie Vavrik and her husband, Bill of Britt and Ron Pletcher and his wife, Lilia of San Jose, California; eight grandchildren, Scott Gilbert, Eric Eisenman, Todd Hildman, Michelle Hildman, Kristie Crowder, Daniel Pletcher, Nicholas Pletcher, Karina Pletcher; six great-grandchildren, Joshua Crowder, Christopher Ramos, Jacob Crowder, Hailey Crowder, Logan Brown and Kasey Brown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Ruth; and his father and mother-in-law, Henry and Amanda Riekena.

Jill A. Schultz, 1952-2005

January 26, 2005

Jill A. Schultz, 52, of Coralville, died on Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at the Lantern Park Rehabilitation and Care Center, surrounded by friends and family.

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 21, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. Timothy Zimmermann officiating. Burial was on Saturday at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. The Cataldo Funeral Home of Garner was in charge of the arrangements.

Jill Annette Schultz, was born on November 8, 1952, in the Park Hospital in Mason City, the daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Greimann) Anderson of Ventura. She graduated from the Ventura High School in 1971 and graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Radiology and furthered her education becoming a Nuclear Medical Technologist.

In 1986 she transferred to the University of Minnesota in the Department of Nuclear Medicine. In 1990, she transferred to the University of Iowa and worked in the Nuclear Medicine department until her death. During her professional career she helped in training and educating many students in the field of nuclear medicine now practicing throughout the United States. She was a member of the American Association of Radiological Technologists and the American Association of Nuclear Medical Technologists.

Jill married Steven Schultz on July 28, 1973 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Miller. The couple owned and operated the Willowbrook OK Hardware Store in Mason City. Jill and Steve had a strong commitment for child care and were deeply involved in the foster care program in Mason City and Iowa City.

Jill and Steve were blessed with the birth of their son, Jonathan Schultz on March 23, 1982. In the spring of 2003, they visited their son in Australia for their 30th wedding anniversary.

In July of 2003, Jill suffered a massive stroke along with surgical complications at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, which left her in a coma until her death.

Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, traveling, reading books and spending time with her family and friends. Jill was also strongly involved in her church, holding various positions serving her Lord and Savior.

Survivors include her husband, Steven Schultz; her son, Jonathan Schultz; her mother, Dorothy Anderson of Garner; her two sisters, Carolyn Luscomb and husband, David of Clear Lake and Jackie Mathewson and husband, Robert of Littleton, Colorado; three brothers, Robert Anderson Jr. and his wife, Maria of Ventura, Tom Anderson and his wife, Kathy of Tempe, Arizona and Greg Anderson and his wife, Julie of Edina, Minnesota.

Cory D. Shields, 1981-2005

Cory Dean Shields, 23, of Britt, died on Friday, January 21, 2005, at his home near Britt.

Cory Dean Shields, the son of Jeff and Debbie Shields, was born on December 23, 1981, in Creston. The family moved to Britt in 1990. He attended the West Hancock High School where he was active in golf, wrestling and baseball. He graduated from West Hancock with the class of 2000.

Following graduation, Cory was employed by Prairie States Management Company as a manager of swine production.

Cory enjoyed hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, spending time with Megan and his friends and talking on the phone with his sister, Morgan. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Britt.

Survivors include his parents, Jeff and Debbie Shields of Britt; a sister, Morgan Shields of Mason City; very special friend, Megan Eno of Mason City and her parents, Jack and Cheryl Eno of Sheffield; grandparents, Harvey and Dorothy Shields of Thayer and Orlin and Angie Berger of Grand Forks, North Dakota; great-grandmothers, Florence Mosman of Creston and Mrs. Henry Dovark of Grafton, North Dakota.

Also surviving are his aunts and uncles, Jon Shields of Lorimor, Julie and Gary McFarling of Clive, Sandy and Steven Sand of Emerado, North Dakota, Gary and Margo Berger of Emerado, North Dakota, LaVerne and Elizabeth Berger of Emerado, North Dakota; 12 cousins; and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Chester Mosman, Lucille Shields, Ingvald and Pearl Berger, Steve Rudnik, Sr. and Henry Dovark; and a cousin, Ryan Shields.

Anna M. Falada, 1922-2005

February 2, 2005

Anna M. Falada, of West Des Moines, formerly of Garner, died on Wednesday, January 26, 2005, following a stroke.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, West Des Moines. Private family interment services will be held at the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Garner.

Anna Margaret Simper, was born on April 1, 1922, to Frank and Anna (Spangler) Simper. She was educated in the Garner schools and received her high school diploma and Normal Training Teacher's certificate in 1938. She assisted her mother and brother in the family farming operation on a farm west of Garner.

She was united in marriage to Francis G. Falada on September 16, 1947, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Garner. The couple made their home on the family farm and continued farming until 1953. They moved to Garner in 1954 and to West Des Moines in 1999.

She began entering baked goods at fairs in 1941 and continued to enter baking exhibits at the Iowa State Fair and North Iowa Fair until 1960. During those years, she won over 650 ribbons and honors. In 1959 she received top honors for yeast breads at the Iowa State Fair for her Anniversary Cinnamon Rolls. She was awarded the first of only three gold and diamond pins awarded for this honor. In 1999, she received top honors at the Iowa State Fair for her chiffon cake and angel food cake entries.

Anna demonstrated her cooking skills to others during the years she worked in area restaurants. She and her daughter, Linda, published their recipes in cookbooks in 1977 and 1987. She retired in 1990. Anna enjoyed cooking, raising Stargazer lilies, having coffee with the neighbors and being with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Francis Falada of West Des Moines; her daughter, Linda and son-in-law, Ron Playle; two grandsons, Nolan of Mason City and Brandon of Clear Lake; two step-grandsons; five step-great-grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; six brothers; a son-in-law, John Webster; nephews, Roger Miles and Raymond Young; and a special "son", Douglas Stromer.

Kenneth E. Stahl, 1963-2005

February 2, 2005

Kenneth E. Stahl, 41, of Klemme, died on Sunday, January 30, 2005, at the Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, February 2, at the Peace Reformed Church, south of Garner with the Rev. Jeff DeBoer officiating. Music will be provided by organist, Connie Greiman who will accompany a congregational hymn and a duet of Brenda Anderson and Brent Renner. Ushers will be Bill Katter and Steve Lenz.

Casket bearers will be Merlyn Assink, Sam Velau, Chuck Helps, David Dirksen, John Larson and Todd Waage. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Cataldo Funeral Home, 160 E. 4th St., Garner and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Kenneth Eugene Stahl, the son of Virgil and Berniece (Ruter) Stahl, was born on April 28, 1963 at Belmond. He was baptized on June 23, 1963 at the Peace Reformed Church. He attended Happy ARC in Garner and was tutored at home by Mrs. Don Bacon. He lived at home for 17 years until he entered the Concord Care Center in Garner. In 1993, he moved to the Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. He was a member of the Peace Reformed Church.

Kenneth is survived by his parents, Virgil and Berniece Stahl of Klemme; his brother, Wayne (Brenda) Stahl of Belmond; nieces and nephew, Renee, Breanna and Nathan Stahl; and his paternal grandmother, Myra Stahl of Belmond.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Pete and Anna Ruter; his paternal grandfather, Lewis Stahl; and a nephew, Joshua Stahl.

Thomas G. Hughes, 1933-2005

February 9, 2005

Thomas G. "Tom" Hughes, of Britt, died on Sunday, January 30, 2005, at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City. He was 71.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, February 3, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Britt. The Rev. Michael Scheuller officiated. Music was provided by organist, Brenda Smith who accompanied soloists, Joleen Leerar and Jennifer Hughes. John Fangman, Robert Horstman and Roger Jacobson ushered.

Honorary casket bearers were the grandchildren of Mr. Hughes, Bailey, Lucy Rose, Ella and Thomas Hughes. Also serving as honorary bearers were Paul Horstman, Leo Wellik, Joe Wellik, Tom Holck, Larry Kerns, Don Eisenman, Harry Smith and Russ Bode. Casket bearers were Ted Smith, Mike Smith, Mike Gremmer, Jeff Gremmer, Ken Campe, Bob Theis and Steve Witte. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery. The Ewing-Dugger Funeral Home of Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Tom Gilmore Hughes, the son of Leo and Winifred (Gilmore) Hughes, was born on May 29, 1933 in Britt. As a young boy he shined shoes on Main Street, delivered papers and telegrams and worked at the local grocery store. Tom attended and graduated from the Britt High School in 1952.

Tom was united in marriage to Rose R. Wellik on November 8, 1954, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. During his lifetime Tom was employed by the Britt Farmers Coop, Kabrick Distributing in Britt and J&W Distributing in Mason City. In 1984, Tom and Rose established RTC's Lounge in Algona. Tom held various part time jobs including driving cars for Pritchard Auto, janitor at the Kanawha School and seasonal work at AgMax Partners. He retired in 1994.

He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt and a member of Catholic Workman Branch 51.

Tom's pride and joy were his four grandchildren. He enjoyed driving his car and solving the world's problems on the corner with the gang.

Survivors include his five children, Becky of Marion, Connecticut, Mary Jo of Britt, Linda of Britt, Todd and wife, Jennifer of Thompson and Jeffrey of Britt; three granddaughters, Bailey, Lucy and Ella; and one grandson, Thomas.

Survivors also include four sisters, Mary Leverenz of Santa Clara, California, Coleen Davison and husband, Joe of Mary Ester, Florida, Michele Horstman and husband, Robert of Britt, Kathryn Smith and husband, Paul of Britt; an uncle, Forrest Gilmore and wife, Mildred of Trenton, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Winnie; his beloved wife of 48 years, Rose in 2002; and a brother-in-law, Clifton Leverenz.

Marvin Hoick, 1931-2005

Marvin Hoick, 73, of Britt, died on Sunday, January 30, 2005, at his home in Britt.

A funeral Mass was held on Friday, February 4, 2005, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with Father Jerry Blake officiating. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Ewing-Dugger Funeral Chapel, Britt, was in charge of the arrangements. Rosary services were conducted by the Knights of Columbus.

Marvin Hoick, the son of William and Margaret (Jacobson) Hoick, was born on July 19, 1931, on the family farm near Britt. He attended the Britt Grade School and graduated from the Britt High School. While attending high school, Marvin was an Iowa Golden Glove Boxer.

On March 15, 1965, Marvin was united in marriage with Peggy Sue Davis in Britt. The couple made their home in Britt where they raised their family.

Marvin was employed by Herman Buns and Son Construction, Winnebago Industries, Hancock County and IMT Transport. Following his retirement, he enjoyed farming with friends and relatives until well into his 70s. In his spare time, he also worked for Ed DeGeus.

He loved spending time with his grandchildren and hearing about their successes and achievements in school and sports. Marvin enjoyed fishing, hunting and racing. He was involved in helping to bring great racing to Britt. He was instrumental in helping build the Hancock County Speedway and was dedicated to maintaining the great condition of the track for three years.

Marvin was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and was enthusiastic about being involved with the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed helping with the rides at the county fair and food stand at Hobo Days. He achieved 4th Degree Knight status and served as Grand Knight for one year. He also volunteered to provide communion to all in need.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Peggy Sue of Britt; six children, Jacqueline Marie and her husband, Dan Hampe of Ames, Tracie Lee and her husband, Matt Covey of Lincoln, Nebraska, Kristie Lynn and special friend, Doug Suby of Garner, William Marvin Holck II of Britt, Connee Rennee and special friend, Tom Blumer of Garner and Kathy Parks of San Antonio, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Christopher Covey, Ryan and Chris Hampe, Jesse and Dakota Lambert, Nakita and Todd Holck, Megan and Jacob Balsley, and Shelly Parks; sisters, Edith Drabek of Garner and Evelyn Buffington and husband, John of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Jade Marie Holck; and two brothers, Kenneth Hoick and Lloyd Hoick.
