Elaine Weiland, 1934-2006

March 8, 2006

Elaine Weiland, 71, of Klemme, died on Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at the Muse-Norris Hospice, Mason City, following a battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 4, at the Klemme United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paddy Druhl officiated. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery. The Andrews Funeral Home, Klemme was in charge of the arrangements.

Elaine Carlson was born on July 30, 1934, on her parent's farm west of Kanawha. She was the daughter of Adolph and Ruth (Paskin) Carlson. Elaine attended Kanawha area schools and graduated from the Kanawha High School in 1951.

Elaine was united in marriage to Vernon F. Weiland on January 1, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Their marriage of more than 40 years was blessed with five children, Kenneth, Karen Jo, Kelly, Kay and Kathy.

Following their marriage, the couple farmed for a time in the Kanawha area and later moved to a farm near Klemme in 1960. There they raised their family and Elaine was a partner with Vernon in the day to day farm operations.

Following their retirement in 1990, they moved into Klemme. In addition to being a devoted wife, farming partner, dedicated mother, and loving grandma, Elaine was a life long home maker. She was employed for many years at Par Products in Klemme.

Elaine adored her grandchildren and this relationship was a mutual love which they felt towards her as well. She received great pleasure in the simple things of life such as conversations with her family, grandchildren, friends, and the children of the community.

Some of her favorite past times included collecting souvenir playing cards and cow memorabilia. She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her many friends. She enjoyed listening to country music. She was an avid sports fan.

Survivors include her daughters, Kay and husband, Joe Jackson of New Baden, Illinois and Kathy and husband, Verlyn Olthoff of Klemme; sons, Kenneth and wife, Donna Weiland of Klemme and Kelly and wife, Deb Weiland of Klemme; a brother, Carroll and wife, Beverly Carlson of Owatonna, Minnesota; four sisters, Marjorie Omvig of Kanawha, Maxine and husband, Cecil Eliason of Kanawha, Jeanie Bonjour of Idaho Falls, Idaho and Janice and husband, Rex Liekweg of Rockwell; and nine grandchildren, Travis Olthoff, Jenny Olthoff, Jayme and husband, Eric Dougherty, Brandon Weiland, Joshua Jackson, Jared Jackson, Krystal Jackson, Katie Weiland and K.C. Weiland; and a sister-in-law, Jeannine Carlson of Kanawha.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon in March of 1993; daughter, Karen Jo Weiland in 2004; brothers, Leo and Harlan; sister, Leona Freerksen-Abbas; a nephew, Dennis Carlson; an infant sister; a nephew, Dennis Carlson; and a niece, Darci Bonjour.

Mabel N. Barz, 1912-2006

March 8, 2006

Mabel  BarzMabel Barz, 93, of Klemme, died on Thursday, March 2, 2006, at the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, April 21, at 11:00 a.m., at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, with the Rev. Donna Buckman officiating. Burial will be one hour prior to services at the church in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. There will be no visitation. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner is in charge of the arrangements.

Mabel Norma Barz, the daughter of Ralph Johannes and Ida A. Louise (Schlawin) Brouwer, was born on September 17, 1912, on a farm east of Garner, Iowa. She received her education in the rural schools near Garner. After the death of her mother in 1923, she made her home with older brothers and sisters.

On November 24, 1932, she was united in marriage to Harvey E. Barz at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme. They resided in Klemme for 60 years. In July 2001, she moved to the Prairie View Apartments in Garner and in March of 2002 to Sheldon where she resided at the Northwest Iowa Health Center, Senior Care. She enjoyed playing cards, quilting, embroidery, fishing and travel.

She was a member of the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, where she sang in the choir and participated in church circles. Mabel also was a member of several community organizations.

She is survived by two sons, Harley (Dora) Barz of Sheldon and Graydon (Marlene) Barz of Southport, North Carolina; a daughter, Myrna (DeLoss) Main of Green Valley, Arizona; five grandchildren, Kerstin (Jerry) Kaiser of Raleigh, North Carolina, Matthew Barz of Longmont, Colorado, Graydon Barz Jr. of New York, New York, Christa (Jeff) Duncanson of Brandon, South Dakota and Carrie (Michael) Dvorak of Superior, Colorado; eight great-grandchildren, Griffin and Mason Kaiser, Riley and Kailee Duncanson and Caitlin, Mackenzie, Carley and Findley Dvorak; and in-laws, Eugene and Doris Greimann, Gladys Barz and Emma Palmby.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; her parents; six brothers, Elmer, Arthur, Raymond, Clifford, Clarence and Richard Brouwer; and four sisters, Esther Holt, Helen Brouwer, Iris Greiman and Meta Roper (twin).

Marlene J. Peterson, 1934-2006

March 8, 2006

Marlene J. Peterson, 71, of Britt, died on Thursday, March 2, 2006, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

The body of Marlene Peterson was donated to science. There will be no services. The Ewing Funeral Home of Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Marlene Joyce Peterson was born on May 2, 1934, in rural Hancock County to Edward J. and Florence Almy Baker. She attended country schools, helped on the family farm and was baptized into the Lutheran faith.

On February 3, 1954, Marlene married James Peterson at the Crystal Lake Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Washington state for a few years where James finished his tour in the Army and Marlene worked at a large pet shop.

In January 1957, James and Marlene came back home to Britt and made their home north of Britt. They raised over 30 breeds of dogs for quite a few years before Marlene started doing taxidermy. She retired about three years ago.

Marlene loved to hunt, fish, travel, work with crafts and sculptures, and anything dealing with the outdoors. She was a member of the Upper Flat Evangelical Free Church.

Survivors include her husband, James; sister, LeAnne Shipler and her husband, Kenny of Britt; three nieces and a nephew, Julie Adams and her husband, Rick of Kensett, Tracie Eden and her husband, Gene of Wesley, Brian Shipler and his wife, Harmonica of Britt and Robin Kudej and her husband, Jeff of Britt; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; along with numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

John F. Buzicky, 1931-2006

March 15, 2006

John F. Buzicky of Britt, died on Friday, March 3, 2006, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. He was 75.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, March 7, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. The Rev. Michael Schueller officiated. Burial was in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery near Duncan. Graveside military services were provided by the Britt Honor Guard. The Ewing Dugger Funeral Home of Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

John Buzicky was born on January 27, 1931, in Britt. He was the son of John C. and Helen (Falada) Buzicky. He attended the country school in Liberty Township and graduated from the Britt High School in 1948. He served two years in the Army during the Korean War.

On June 28, 1960, John married Elaine Nowak at the St Casimir's Catholic Church in Wells, Minnesota. He farmed on the family farm south of Duncan and also operated a TV repair shop. He played in several bands for 25+ years, including the Northern Bohemians and the Cal Smith Band. After retiring from farming in 1979, he worked for the Wellik-DeWitt Implement for 20 years.

He was a life long member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan and a member of the Catholic Workman Branch #51 for 60+ years, where he served as past treasurer, reporter, and messenger. He was a life time member of the American Legion Post #315 - Britt, Knights of Columbus Council #8610 - Britt, and the Federation of Musicians Local 230 in Mason City.

John enjoyed music, gardening, woodworking, children, grandchildren, and family. He loved to travel.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; five children, Myron Buzicky (Loida Martinez and son, Christopher) of Queen Creek, Arizona, Karen Connor (husband, Brad and son, Ian) of Britt, Mark Buzicky (wife, Julie, daughter, Ashlea and son, Austin) of Woodbury, Minnesota, Sharon Jannusch (husband, Matt) of Mahtomedi, Minnesota and Mike Buzicky (wife, Tina and sons, Chase and Lake) of Hudson, Wisconsin. He is also survived by brother, Joe Buzicky.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Vincent; two sisters, Cleta Stupka and Sally Malek; and grandson, Nicholas Connor.

Marie R. Schleuger, 1920-2006

Marie R. Schleuger, 85, of Britt, died on Saturday, March 4, 2006, at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 8, at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, Britt. The Rev. Jerry Blake officiated. Music was provided by organist, Brenda Smith who accompanied soloist, John Weishaar.

Casket bearers were J. R. Schleuger, Curt Schleuger, Matt Schleuger, Kim Schleuger, Danielle Waymire and Jamie Kaauamo. Burial was in the Bingham Township Cemetery, Woden.

Marie, the daughter of Carl and Rose (Markl) Watson, was born May 11, 1920, in Burt. She attended country school and the Woden High School.

In 1939, Marie married Henry Schleuger. The couple farmed and made their home in the Garner area and later moved to Britt where they farmed and were in the trucking business.

Marie was dedicated to raising her family. She asked for little, but did everything she could for her family. She was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and St. Patrick's Ladies Guild.

Survivors include four children, Glenn (Jackie) Schleuger of Britt, Darold (Sondra) Schleuger of Forest City, Rosie (Roger) Gerdes of Fair Grove, Missouri and Dan (Julie) Schleuger of Britt; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Watson; and one brother, Clarence Watson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; three sisters, Lucille Ebeling, Florence Stuflick and Dorothy Miller; brother, Kenneth Watson; infant brother, Donald Lawrence; daughter-in-law, Vanessa Follman; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Herma Lauen, 1910-2006

March 15, 2006

Herma Lauen, 95, of Garner, formerly of Meservey, died on Sunday, March 5, 2006, at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 8, at the First Reformed Church, Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Interment was in the Meservey Cemetery. The Retz-Grarup Funeral Home of Meservey was in charge of the arrangements.

Herma (Vierkant) Lauen was born on July 6, 1910, on the family farm near Meservey. She was the daughter of George and Dena (Beenen) Vierkant. She was baptized in the Alexander Reformed Church and attended country school. At a young age her mother died during a flu epidemic and Herma helped to raise her brothers and sisters. She also worked as a housekeeper to help support her family.

On December 2, 1936, Hernia was united in marriage with Andrew H. Lauen at the First Reformed Church Parsonage in Meservey. They moved to Sunnyvale, California for a few years then returned to Marshalltown, for a couple years before settling in Meservey where they raised their family.

Herma was a devoted member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey and a loving mother and grandmother. For 42 years she had children in her home, whether her children or grandchildren. She was active with a big garden and even walked beans after having her knees replaced. She was continually playing games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Spending time with her sisters was special for her.

Herma moved to Garner when Andrew entered the Concord Care Center. She lived at Cardinal Grove Assisted Living for a few years and then resided at the Concord Care Center the last two years.

She is survived by her children, Dean (Mary) Lauen of Clear Lake, Dianne (Marv) Josten of Garner and Robert (Sandra) Lauen of Ventura; grandchildren, JoDeane (Scott) Hafermann of Goodell, Todd Lauen of Meservey, Anne (Michael) Balek of Mason City, Lynne (Brian) Bovenmyer of Garwin, Eric (Staci) Josten of Ankeny, Kimberly (Erik) Dorenkamp of Norwalk and Nicholas (Christelle) Lauen of Mason City; great-grandchildren, Lyndsay, Jeffrey & Samantha Hafermann, Zachary & Cale Josten, Owen Bovenmyer, Ethan and Megan Dorenkamp.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Bill, Herman and Ted Vierkant; and four sisters, Sina Wenzel, Alice Dirks, Wilma Pals and Anna Nordman; and one great-granddaughter, Sarah.

Marian Stevenson, 1922-2006

Marian Stevenson, 83, of Britt, died on Monday, March 6, 2006, at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 11, at the United Methodist Church in Britt with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. The Ewing Dugger Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Marian Alice (Munson) Stevenson, the daughter of Nels and Hulda Anderson Munson, was born on December 23, 1922, in Britt. She attended the Britt schools and graduated from the Britt High School. After graduation she went to Britt Junior College.

On November 17, 1946, Marian was united in marriage to James Stevenson in Britt. The couple made their home in Britt and raised their two sons, Jeff and Mark there. Marian was very proud of her children and supported them in all of their endeavors.

Marian taught in a one-room schoolhouse for a few years, was a substitute teacher and then became a full-time teacher's aide for several years in the Britt Elementary Schools.

She possessed a positive attitude, was a strong-willed woman who was outspoken and always had a laugh ready to give.

Marian was a member of local card clubs and enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt and taught Sunday School for over 30 years.

Survivors include two sons, Jeff and his wife, Elizabeth of Panama City Beach, Florida and Mark and his wife, Lori of Murrieta, California; four grandchildren, Mathew, Eric, Shawn and Cassandra; sister, Helen Bridwell; and other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; and two brothers, Frank Munson and Norman Munson.

Auty Griggs, 1908-2006

Auty Griggs of Fort Collins, Colorado, formerly of Britt, died on Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at the Golden Peaks Care Center, Fort Collins, Colorado. She was 98.

Funeral services for Auty Griggs were held on Friday, March 10, at the United Methodist Church in Britt. The Rev. Robert Dodge officiated. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Ewing Dugger Funeral Home of Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Auty was born on February 9, 1908, in Liberty, Kentucky and moved with her family to Britt, at the age of 2.

She married John Griggs in 1932 and they farmed northwest of Britt. After her husband's death in 1984, she lived in Britt until 1995 when she moved to the Prairie View Apartments in Garner. She moved to Fort Collins in 1998.

She is survived by daughters, Patricia (Donald) Okland of Fort Collins and Betty (Gordon) Fortier of Loveland, Colorado; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Ruby Farris of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers and three sisters.

Memorial contributions will be forwarded to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Donald A. Haes, 1922-2006

Donald A. HaesDonald A. Haes, 84, of Garner, died on Friday, March 10, 2006, at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Funeral services were held on Monday at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Fr. Jerry Blake officiating. Music was provided by organist, Carolyn Kumsher who accompanied the church choir. Ushers were Robert Kral and Lawrence Engstler.

Honorary bearers were Aimee Noehren, Amanda Haes, Angie Cornelius, Chelsea Cornelius, Maddie Haes and Brooke Haes. Casket bearers were Thad Haes, Beau Haes, Chad Noehren, Jason Haes, Jeff Haes and Craig Haes. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald Arthur Haes, the son of Arthur and Bertha (Goll) Haes, was born on February 9, 1922, on a farm north of Garner. He received his education in the Garner schools. After graduating from the Garner High School in 1939 he began farming.

On February 21, 1944, he married Ann Schmidt at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They lived on a farm north of Garner until 1974 when they moved into Garner. After retiring from farming in 1984, Don and Ann enjoyed spending their winters in Texas and Arizona. Don loved farming, traveling and fishing.

He was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church and had served on the Farmer's Cooperative Elevator Board in Garner.

Survivors include his wife, Ann of Garner; three children, Dick Haes of Ankeny, Bill (Pat) Haes of Garner and Nancy (Dennis) Cornelius of Ankeny; 11 grandchildren, Jeff Haes, Craig Haes, Jason (Melissa) Haes, Maddie Haes, Brooke Haes, Aimee (Chad) Noehren, Thad (Renae) Haes, Amanda Haes, Beau Haes, Angie Cornelius and fiance, Eric Miller and Chelsea Cornelius; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Carleton Haes.

Ralph W. Dodd, 1922-2006

March 29, 2006

Former area resident, Ralph W. Dodd, of Clearlake, California, died on Friday, March 10, 2006. He was 84.

A funeral Mass was held on Thursday, March 16, at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Clearlake. Interment was in the Lower Lake Cemetery, Lower Lake.

Ralph W. Dodd was born on May 4, 1922, in Clear Lake, Iowa. He was in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 and a truck driver for 27 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Ralph was not only devoted to his family and close friends, but to his church as well. He will be remembered for his many talents, warm smile, great personality, sense of humor, and story-telling abilities.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Theonella (Schneider) Dodd; children, Doug, Rick, Ray, DeAnne, Becky Wheeler, Bryan and Mary Gilbert; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, Myrna Schmidt of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

Rose Etchen Lewis Bell, 1895-2006

March 22, 2006

Rose Bell, 110, a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, formerly of Klemme, died peacefully on Saturday, March 11, 2006, at the Belmond Health Care Center, where she had lived an active and vibrant life since January 2001.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 20, 2006, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme, with the Rev. Donna Buckman officiating. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. The Andrews Funeral Home of Klemme was in charge of the arrangements.

Rose Etchen was born to John and Elizabeth (Eichmeier) Etchen on August 22, 1895, on a farm in Twin Lake Township, Hancock County. She was the fifth of six children. Rose attended rural schools through the eighth grade and spent much of her youth working on the farm where she grew up.

Rose was united in marriage to Henry Lewis on November 26, 1914, in Garner. Henry and Rose owned and worked at the Lewis Produce Store in Klemme together. After Henry ("Heinie") died in 1944, Rose continued to operate the business herself, until she sold the store to Fred Bell in 1946.

Rose and Fred were married on September 22, 1946. The couple continued to run the business until retirement in 1978.

Rose was a hard worker throughout her entire life. She was a meticulous housekeeper and loved to garden. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed baking cookies and making sure there was something sweet to go with coffee when she had visitors.

Her love for others continued to shine through even in her years at the care center where she greeted the staff and other residents with a warm welcome and friendly smile.

Rose crocheted and did other handicraft work, creating heirlooms for her family to enjoy. Those who knew her will remember her as a hard working, caring and dignified lady who carried herself in a vibrant and meticulous manner until the very end of her life's journey.

Survivors include her son, Duard Lewis, and wife, Mildred of Logan, New Mexico; two step-daughters, Julia Gordon of Rowan and Ruth Marchand of Clear Lake; one step-son, Frederick O. Bell and wife, Lula of Klemme; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Henry and Fred; daughter, Eva Mae; a sister, Lillian; and four brothers, Louis, Albert, Fred and Jack.

Florence M. Nerem, 1912-2006

March 15, 2006

Florence M. Nerem, 93, of Kanawha, died on Sunday, March 12, 2006, at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 16, at 1:30 p.m., at the Kanawha Lutheran Church with Janelle Siffring, AiM officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Florence Margaret Lund was born at Bancroft, on November 20, 1912, the eldest of eight children born to Olaf Sigvart Lund and Lydia (Rentz) Lund. She grew up in Bancroft and LuVerne, graduating from the Bancroft High School. After leaving home, she worked for a farm family near Renwick, where she met her husband-to-be, Tjeran Nerem, when he rescued her team of horses from a snowdrift.

They married on Christmas Day, 1936. The couple lived in the Renwick area until World War II. Florence then lived with her sister, Dorothy in Algona until she was able to join Tjeran at military bases in Texas and Georgia. After the war, they again settled in the Renwick-Corwith area farming for over 30 years before retiring to Kanawha. They adopted a daughter, Kristi in 1948. She performed the many tasks of a farm wife superbly. Tjeran Nerem died in 1992.

Florence later married Edward Schroeder and shared her last years with him. She loved music and played the piano and organ. She was active in the Kanawha Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie Schroeder, of Kanawha; her daughter, Kristi Nerem of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two sisters, Delores (Walter) Rekward of Davenport and Lillian Wier of Renwick; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Tjeran Nerem; two brothers, Olaf and Adolph Lund; and three sisters, Martha Vaudt, Dorothy Zeigler and Jennie Nerem.

Herbert Irving, 1919-2006

Herbert H. IrvingHerbert Irving, 86, of Garner, died on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 17, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who accompanied soloist, Bernie Urich and congregational hymns.

Casket bearers were Steve Casperson, Paul Anderson, Thomas Sammons, Tim Casperson, Tim Schmidt and Dennis Drabek. Burial was in the Concord Township Cemetery, Garner with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Herbert Haskell Irving, the son of Clinton William and Ida Josephine (Haskell) Irving was born on September 21, 1919, at Winnebago, Illinois. The family moved to a farm southeast of Garner in February of 1920. Herb attended the rural schools of Ell Township and then the Garner Public Schools. He worked with his father for nine years. He served his country during WW II in the U.S. Army.

On February 12, 1943, he married Gelaine Evelyn Palma (Jensen) at Bethany, Missouri. Herb worked for Elmer Urich, Iowa Electric Light & Power Company, was a business partner with Buck Nonnweiler and in 1955 had his own electrical business. From 1978-80 he worked at Lauritsens and then retired.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Garner American Legion.

William Boeshart, 1920-2006

William B. BoeshartWilliam B. Boeshart, 85, of Garner, died on Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 18, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Fr. Michael Schueller officiating. Donna Young was the lector. Music was provided by organist, Carolyn Kumsher who accompanied the church choir. Ushers were Robert Kral and Lawrence Engstler. Honorary bearers were Sid Heitmeyer, Dan Sobek, Bill Stoynoff, Bob Gray, Maurice McCabe, Dale Meyer and Dean Meyer.

Casket bearers were Jennifer Dickens, Amanda Boeshart, T.J. Boeshart, Shane Boeshart, Kevin Boeshart, Sarah Bakehouse, Andy Bakehouse, Joshua Bakehouse and angels, Jeff and Ryan Boeshart. Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

William Bazil Boeshart, the son of Edward Francis and Mary (Blubaugh) Boeshart was born on July 19, 1920 at Danville, Ohio. He attended school at Danville, graduating in 1938. He farmed with his parents for several years.

On November 18, 1943, he married Bonnie Zoe Robison in Danville. They moved east of Garner where they farmed until 1956, when they moved southwest of Ventura. They retired in 1985 and moved into Garner the following year. He enjoyed bowling and gardening. Bill was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of Garner; four children, Fletcher Boeshart (Carol) of Clear Lake, Penelope Bakehouse (John) of Mason City, Thomas Boeshart (Flora) of Clear Lake and Lori Harmon (John) of Denver, Colorado; ten grandchildren, Amanda Boeshart, T.J. Boeshart, Kevin Boeshart, Shane Boeshart, Sarah Bakehouse, Andy Bakehouse, Joshua Bakehouse, Kim Haag, Jennifer Dickens and Janice Harmon; four great-grandchildren, Aaron Boeshart, Bailey Boeshart, Ryanna Boeshart and Jamie Dickens.

Survivors also include brother, Anthony Boeshart (Loretta) of Danville, Ohio; a sister, Lucille Bross of Michigan; 2 sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Boeshart of Mount Vernon, Ohio and Mary Louise Boeshart of Columbus, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Ryan Boeshart and Jeff Boeshart; two brothers, Charles Boeshart and Edward Boeshart; and a sister, Florence Collier.

Grace B. Ausmus, 1913-2006

Grace B. AusmusGrace B. Ausmus, 92, of Garner, died on Friday, March 17, 2006, at the Westview Care Center, Britt.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 20, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who accompanied soloist, Warren Torkelson and a congregational hymn. Ushers were Maynard and Marvin Schoneman.

Casket bearers were Gary Schisel, Don Mathahs, Mark Ricke, Larry Schisel, Bob Schisel and Dana Simmons. Burial was in the Concord Township Cemetery, Garner. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Grace Bonnadean Ausmus, the daughter of Francis and Ivy (Sweet) Stanley, was born on October 7, 1913, at Ridgeway, Missouri. She attended school at Ridgeway. Grace taught at a rural school west of Brooklyn, Missouri, for six months in 1936 before working as a waitress in Bethany, Missouri, where she met her future husband, Claude Nelson Ausmus.

On July 17, 1938, they were married in Chillicothe, Missouri, at the home of Claude's oldest sister, Rena. They lived in Kansas City, Missouri, for over 40 years where Grace was employed as a school cook. In 1998 she moved to Garner to be closer to her family. In March of 2005, she moved to the Concord Care Center in Garner and in May of 2005 to the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Grace loved to cook, bake and entertain. She was known for her cinnamon rolls she loved to make from scratch and her dill pickles. She enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing and crocheting.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner and UMW. Grace was involved in bowling leagues, church groups and other activities. She also was an Easter Star member for many years.

Grace is survived by her two daughters, Sue Mathahs of Thompson and Jean (Gary) Schisel of Garner; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Francis (Jean) Stanley of Des Moines; two sisters-in-law, Avis Stanley of St. Joseph, Missouri and Polly Stanley of Carmen, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude in 1989; her parents; a son-in-law, Dale Mathahs; sister, Clare Kimm; and brothers, Forest, Charles, Clark and Claude Stanley.

Frank C. Chizek, 1914-2006

Frank C. Chizek, 91, of Modesto, California, died on Saturday, March 18, 2006, at the Dale Commons Assisted Living. Private services were held at the Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel.

A native of Mason City, Frank Charles Chizek, was born on April 19, 1914. He was the son of Frank James and Mary "Mamie" (Brozik) Chizek. He lived in Modesto two years and previously lived in Palm Desert for 35 years.

He was a crane operator for 60 years with Operating Engineers Local 12. He was a member of the Palm Springs Elks Lodge and enjoyed hunting and working on cars.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie Chizek of Modesto; stepchildren, Barbara Singer of Penn Valley and John Naylor of Ripon, California; a sister, Eleanor Jensen of Britt; and four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his stepson, Jim Naylor; and one brother.

Anna R. Knoll, 1910-2006

Anna Rose "Annie" Knoll, 96, of Kanawha, died on Monday, March 20, 2006, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services for Annie Knoll were held on Wednesday, March 22, at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Steve Schulz officiating. Burial was in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha. The Ewing-Dugger Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Annie, the daughter of Ole and Mary Marks Eenhuis, was born on March 15, 1910, at Britt. She grew up in the Kanawha area where she attended country school.

Annie was united in marriage with DeWayne Knoll on June 26, 1934, by Rev. D. H. Plesscher at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Parsonage. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Kanawha.

Annie was a life long member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church and a member of the Ladies Aid Society. She enjoyed traveling to see family, especially her grandchildren. In her spare time Annie enjoyed fishing, quilting and embroidery work, cooking and baking.

She is survived by a daughter, Marlene Blankespoor and her husband, Harvey of Holland, Michigan; son, Marvin Knoll and his wife, Dolly of Willis, Texas; six grandchildren, Doug, Curt, Amber, Debbie, Chris, Cathy; nine great-grandchildren, Mitch, Jenna, Emily, Sidney, Emmett, Carson, Tanner, Collin, Kyla; and numerous other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, DeWayne on March 19, 2003; an infant daughter; a great-grandson; and five sisters and two brothers.

Rose L. Thompson, 1917-2006

Rose Lorraine Thompson, 88, of Kanawha, died on Thursday, March 23, 2006, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 27, at the Kanawha Lutheran Church, Kanawha. The Rev. Ron Kallen and Janelle Siffring, AiM, officiated. Music was provided by organist, Marilyn DeKruyff who accompanied vocalists, Lance and Christy Banwart. Honorary casket bearers were Rozanne Gross, Jodi Pedersen, Renee Jackson, Christy Banwart, Becky Leavitt, Angie Vitzthum, Melanie Lumley, Kelly Thompson, Stephanie Thompson, Lindsey Thompson and Katelyn Thompson.

Casket bearers were Bill Thompson, Don Thompson, Rick Thompson, Chuck Thompson, Randall Thompson and Brent Thompson. Burial was in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery. The Ewing-Dugger Funeral Home of Kanawha was in charge of the arrangements.

Rose, the daughter of Edward and Louise (Hanson) Kallem, was born on May 16, 1917, in Rothsay, Minnesota. At a young age she moved with her family to Nashua, Montana. They then moved to Iowa where Rose received her education in the country schools.

Rose was united in marriage to Milford Thompson on February 11, 1940, at Fort Dodge. The couple lived and farmed in the Kanawha, Gowrie and LuVerne areas.

She was a long time member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church. She loved her family and the many hours spent with her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, sewing quilts, and working with her flowers.

Survivors include her husband, Milford of Kanawha; five children, Virginia (Harlan) Hansen of Rutland, Daryl (Ruby) Thompson of LuVerne, Dennis (Ruthanne) Thompson of Humboldt, David (Holly) Thompson of Kanawha and Douglas (Wendy) Thompson of Goldfield; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are four sisters, Elsie Minor of Marshalltown, Dorothy Cripps of Marshalltown, Jean Lee of Bellevue, Nebraska and Joyce Champlin of Torrance, California; two brothers, Kenneth Kallem of Marshalltown and Floyd Kallem of Alden; along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Louise Kallem; four brothers, Ernest, Donald, James and Robert; and a sister, Vivien Jones.

John H. Zrostlik, 1919-2006

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 28, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan, with Fr. Jerry Blake officiating. Lector was Amelia Golwitzer. Randy and Rusty Hadacek ushered.

Casket bearers were Jerry Kern, Mike Zrostlik, Steven Zrostlik, Pat Hendricks, Dale Golwitzer and Marvin Zrostlik. Burial was in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Duncan. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

John Henry Zrostlik, the son of John and Mary (Hadacek) Zrostlik was born on July 15, 1919, at Duncan. He attended the rural schools of Garfield Township. John worked for Frank Zrostlik, Peter Engstler and Elmer Urich, retiring in the early 1980's.

In December of 1996 he moved to the Westview Care Center in Britt due to ill health. He enjoyed visiting and listening to Czech music.

He was a member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Catholic Workman FCSLA Branch W51.

John is survived by his sister, Rose Kern of Wesley; his brother, Paul Zrostlik (Lila) of Garner; nine nieces and nephews; eight great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph and George Zrostlik; two sisters, Betty Holecek and Mary Zrostlik; and two brothers-in-law, Ambrose Kern and Ed Holecek.

Fern Bartik, 1918-2006

Fern  BartikFern Bartik, 87, of Britt, died on Sunday, March 26, 2006, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 29, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt with the Rev. Edward Bard, Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Music was provided by Beverly Cataldo.

Casket bearers were Jay Ryerson, Aaron Ryerson, Larry Sharp, Mike Niedert, Jim Novinger and Brad Sharp. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Leona Fern Bartik, the daughter of the Rev. Clarence Oliver and Lelah Maye (Scott) Arnaman, was born on April 25, 1918, at Exline. She was raised and educated in Centerville.

On August 1, 1934, she was married to Willie Frank Bartik at Unionville, Missouri. They moved to Britt where they raised their family. Fern enjoyed her family, grandchildren, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and raising cats.

She was a member of the Congregational Church of Britt, HCMH Auxiliary and was active in community affairs.

Survivors include two daughters, Janis (Larry) Sharp of West Des Moines and Francine Ryerson of Forest City; four grandsons, Brad Sharp, Stan Sharp, Jay Ryerson and Aaron Ryerson; three great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; one great-great-granddaughter; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Bartik of Lake Havasu, Arizona; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Bartik on January 3, 2000; son-in-law, Jerome Ryerson; her parents; a sister, Evelyn F. Bartik; three brothers-in-law, Arthur Bartik, Ernest Bartik and Anthony Bartik; and a sister-in-law, Minnie Loo Bartik.

Pearl DeGroote, 1921-2006

Pearl I. DeGroote, of Corwith, died at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, on Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at the age of 84.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 1, at the St. John Lutheran Church, Corwith. The Rev. Kay Wold officiated. Music was provided by organist, Helen Burrington who accompanied several congregational hymns. Casket bearers were her grandchildren, Brent and Beth DeGroote, Bethany DeGroote, Benjamin DeGroote, Holly DeGroote, Wayne DeGroote and Heather and William Ramirez.

Honorary bearers were Mrs. DeGrotte's great-grandchildren, Gabriel Rameriz and Ethan DeGroote. Burial was in the Corwith Cemetery. The Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of Corwith was in charge of the arrangements.

Pearl Irene (Hollatz) DeGroote was born on April 6, 1921, in Garner. She was the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Bohn) Hollatz. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended the St. John Parochial School through the 8th grade and graduated from the Ventura High School in 1939. Following high school, Pearl worked at a defense plant in Council Bluffs, Iowa for two years during WW II.

She was married to Darrel DeGroote on April 6, 1947, in Mason City. Darrel and Pearl farmed for 37 years in the Corwith area. Pearl enjoyed her flowers, gardening and crocheting. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participating in all of their sports and other activities. She also enjoyed listening to the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Twins on the radio. The couple enjoyed spending their winters in Mesa, Arizona. Pearl's husband, Darrel preceded her in death on February 6, 2005.

Pearl became a resident of the Kanawha Nursing Home in Kanawha in April of 2004.

Survivors include her sons, Douglas and wife, Carol and Gary and wife, Elizabeth, all of Corwith.

Also surviving are her grandchildren, Brent and wife, Beth, Bethany, Ben, Holly, Heather and husband, William and Wayne; and two great-grandsons, Gabriel Ramirez and Ethan DeGroote. She is also survived by her sisters, Edna Albers of Clear Lake, Ethel Schoenwetter of Klemme, Helen and her husband, Ray Harms of Clear Lake, Stella and her husband, Brynes Lemke of Mason City and Ardith and her husband, Wayne Toppin of Ventura.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel DeGroote; her son, Mark Everett DeGroote; her parents, Henry and Bertha Hollatz; her brothers, Ellsworth, Wilbur and Melvin Hollatz; and her sisters, Edith Poohl and Alma Reed.

Edna Tindall, 1912-2006

Edna A. Tindall, of Corwith, died on Thursday, March 30, 2006, at Kanawha. She was 94.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 3, at the St. John Lutheran Church, Corwith. Pastor Kay Wold officiated. Music was provided by organist, Helen Burrington, who accompanied a special selected by Mrs. Tindall's granddaughters. Burial was in the Corwith Cemetery. The Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of Corwith was in charge of the arrangements.

Honorary bearers were Brenda Ochs, LuAnn Neuroth, Mark Tindall, Charles Tindall, Roberta Widen, Rebecca Poe, Cynthia Tindall, Dean Tindall, Teresa Tindall, Katherine Williams and Nicholas Tindall. Casket bearers were Mark Shipman, Tom Shipman, Kenneth Tindall, David Tindall, Paul Tindall and Michael Tindall.

Edna A. (Ernst) Tindall, was born to Oscar and Amalie Miller Ernst on January 7, 1912, at Schuyler, Nebraska. She received her education at Schuyler, graduating from the Schuyler High School.

She was united in marriage to James W. Tindall at Shenandoah on October 24, 1928. The couple lived for a time at Corning and moved to Schuyler, Nebraska and farmed. In 1942, they moved to Corwith to a farm, and lived there until moving into town in 1959. Edna and James ran the hardware store in Corwith for 15 years.

She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church. She was a Sunday School teacher, a Circle member and took care of the church flowers for many years. Edna loved to garden and grow beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed sewing, pottery, making quilts and taking care of her family.

Surviving are her two children, Mrs. Robert (Natalie) Shipman and Duane D. Tindall, all of Corwith. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. George (Maurine) McNally; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Walter (Billie) Ernst, both of Schuyler, Nebraska; and her daughters-in-law, Sylvia Tindall of Britt and Beverly Tindall of Corwith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, James Jr. and Oscar; one grandson, Timothy Shipman; one sister, Mrs. Martin (Clare) Schulz; and one brother, Walter Ernst.

Kenneth Schlawin, 1912-2006

Funeral services for Kenneth Schlawin, 93, of Garner, who died on Thursday, March 30, 2006, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader, were held on Tuesday, April 4, at the Zion Evangelical Reformed Church in Garner, with the Rev. Tim Diehl as officiant.

Mary Witt was the organist. Dean Goll and Daryl Upmeyer ushered. Honorary bearers were Kenney's grandchildren.

Casket bearers were Earl Webner, Dennis Webner, Keith Carolus, Craig Schlawin, Monty Schlawin and Greg Schlawin. Burial was in the Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. The Cataldo Funeral home of Garner was in charge of the arrangements.

Kenneth Louis Schlawin, the son of Reinhold and Esther (Greiman) Schlawin was born on September 1, 1912, on a farm near Klemme. He was baptized in October of 1912 and confirmed on April 7, 1927 at Frieden's Reformed Church near Garner. He attended the rural schools of Hancock County and then worked for various farmers in the Klemme area. In 1937, he began working as an Allis Chalmers mechanic and salesman for Garner Motor Sales Company, retiring on July 14, 1978.

On October 4, 1939, he married Syble Bernice Webner at the Peace Reformed Church, south of Garner. They lived in Garner all of their married life. Due to ill health, Kenny moved to the Elkader Care Center to be near his son and daughter. He enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Zion Evangelical Reformed Church in Garner.

Survivors include his son, Robert Schlawin (Carrie) of Alexandria, Virginia and their son, Robert Schlawin, Jr. (Catherine) of Herndon, Virginia and their two sons, Eric and Jack; a daughter, Judy Wellendorf of Elkader and her three children, Scott Wellendorf (Laura) of Cedar Falls and their two children, Alaina and Mason, MMC Steven Wellendorf (Madonna) of Yorktown, Virginia and their children, Brandon and Allison, Timothy Wellendorf (Heather) of Onalaska, Wisconsin and their two sons, Riley and Isaac, Jerry Schlawin (Kathryn) of Elkport and their two children, Carol Johnson (Greg) of Elgin and their children, Jarrett and Kenneth, Gary Schlawin (Eileen) of Elgin and their children, Dustin Pensel, Hunter and Carter; a daughter-in-law, Delawn Schlawin of Garner and her children, Kaitlin and Max; sisters-in-law, Nadine Schlawin of Forest City, Etta Lou Bier of Garner, Amy Webner of Mason City and Doris Palmer (Willard) of Holland.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Syble on May 26, 1995; his son, Ronald on April 5, 2002; his parents; and three brothers, Wayne, Glenn and Virgil.

Milvern I. Barz, 1919-2006

Milvern Irwin Barz, 86, a life long Klemme area resident and farmer, died on Friday, March 31, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, with his family at his side.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 3, 2006, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme. The Rev. Donna Buckman officiated.

Burial was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. The Andrews Funeral Home, Klemme was in charge of the arrangements.

Milvern Barz was born on July 27, 1919, on a farm east of Klemme, the son of Albert and Esther (Hartbeck) Barz. He attended and graduated from the Klemme High School with the Class of 1936.

Milvern was united in marriage to Mary Jane Holm on June 14, 1946, at Garner. Their union was blessed with two children, David and LuAnn. Following their marriage, Milvern and Mary Jane farmed and raised their family on the homestead east of Klemme that Milvern had helped build with his father. Their farming operation had included raising crops and a wide array of livestock. In addition to farming Milvern was employed as a machinist at Winnebago Industries from 1970-1984.

Milvern and his wife lived on the farm until moving into the town of Klemme four and one-half years ago to the community apartments. In September of 2005 they moved to the Prairie View Retirement Community in Garner.

Throughout his entire life Milvern was a loving, devoted, and caring person. He received great satisfaction from times spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family and friends.

Both he and Mary Jane were very active in their church. Milvern served numerous times on the Immanuel Reformed UCC Church Consistory, even as recently as his last term ending in January of this year. He also served many years as Sunday School Superintendent, a Sunday School Teacher, and participating in the adult Bible study program.

The couple was involved with the operation of the Slippery Elm Golf Course in Klemme for 18 years, where he served as the club's treasurer. He also served on the Ell Township Board of Trustees.

Milvern enjoyed the simple things of life. He enjoyed singing, dancing, playing cards and dining out. He enjoyed watching sports and was a fan of the Hawkeyes and Cyclones.

Survivors include his wife and companion of nearly 60 years, Mary Jane Barz of Garner; his son, David and wife, Jane of Tripp, South Dakota; his daughter, LuAnn Verdoorn and husband, Mike of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Bradford Barz and wife, Lisa of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, Rebecca Barz of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Elizabeth Noonan and husband, Ryan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mary Barz and fiancée, Matt Fosness of Brookings, South Dakota and William Rucker of Clear Lake. Milvern was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his first great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ethel Josten; and a brother, Edward Barz.
