Lois B. Bryan, 1921-2006

Lois
B. Bryan, 84, of Garner, died on
Thursday, June 1, 2006, at the
Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa
in Mason City.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, June 5, at
the United Methodist Church in
Garner with the Rev. David
Wagner officiating. Music was
provided by organist, Mary
Kopacek who accompanied soloist,
Beverly Cataldo and a
congregational hymn. Ushers were
Marvin and Maynard Schoneman.
Honorary bearers
were Andrew, Carter and Riley
Henken and Spencer Bryan. Casket
bearers were Ben Bryan, Jason
Henken, Marlin Stadtlander, John
Spratt, Bruce Sankey and Bob
Haugland. Burial was in the
Concord Township Cemetery in
Garner. The Cataldo Funeral
Chapel, Garner, was in charge of
the arrangements.
Lois Burneis
Bryan, the daughter of William
and Grace (Pals) Tinkey, was
born on October 8, 1921, at
Osterdock. She moved to
Alexander as an infant and
graduated from the Alexander
High School in 1939, sharing
honors as valedictorian and
representing her school as Miss
Alexander at the North Iowa Band
Festival.
Lois attended the
Midland Radio and Television
Schools in Kansas City, Missouri
and received her license as a
radio-telegraph operator in
1942. She was then employed by
Delta Airlines from 1942 to 1945
in Atlanta, Georgia and later
Fort Worth, Texas.
On September 21,
1945, she was united in marriage
to Harold E. Bryan at Alexander.
They lived in Dows until 1956
when they moved to Plainfield
and owned Bryan's Self-Serve
Store. In 1962, they moved to
Garner where she was a
bookkeeper at local implement
dealerships from 1964 to 1983.
Lois also clerked in her
husband's auction business and
for a short time was a dental
assistant for Dr. Hayes.
She loved to read
and enjoyed her home, family and
friends. At the age of 70, she
learned to play the piano with a
home study course and
occasionally accompanied her
Sunday School class and circle.
She was a member
of the United Methodist Church
in Garner and The Welcome Class
serving as secretary sending
cards to the sick and bereaved.
She held offices in the UMW and
Rebekah Circle and taught Sunday
School in Alexander, Dows and
Plainfield.
She is survived
by her son, Barton (Nancy) Bryan
of Garner; daughter, Kristin
Bryan of Cedar Park, Texas;
granddaughter, Heather (Jason)
Henken of Crystal Lake;
grandson, Benjamin Bryan (Tari
Rollefson) of Forest City; four
great-grandsons, Andrew, Carter
and Riley Henken and Spencer
Bryan; sisters, Loraine (John)
Halfwassen of Belmond, Dilene
Orpen of Northwood and Jollene
(Marvin) Jaacks of Alexander; a
brother, Delbert (Mardel) Tinkey
of Coralville; a sister-in-law,
Vadona Pell of Brazil, Indiana;
and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her husband, Harold
on August 15, 1992; parents; and
a brother, Loren Tinkey.

Evelyn E. Schramm, 1908-2006
June 14, 2006
Evelyn
E. Schramm, 97, of Klemme, died
on Monday, June 5, 2006, at the
Belmond Health Care Center.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, June 9, at
the Clear Lake Evangelical Free
Church with Rev. David Wiersbe
officiating. Burial was in the
Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason
City. The Cataldo Funeral Home
was in charge of the
arrangements.
Evelyn Ethel
Schramm, the daughter of Gus and
Lydia (Hesley) Schramm, was born
on December 26, 1908, on a farm
south of Hayfield. She attended
the Hayfield Consolidated School
graduating in 1927. Evelyn later
continued her education at the
Hamilton Business College in
Mason City.
In 1929, she
moved to Chicago where she
worked at the Moody Bible
Institute and also attended
classes. In the 1930's she
returned to Garner where she
worked for seven years as an
assistant to Dr. Alder, a
chiropractor in Forest City. In
1940 Evelyn moved to Seattle,
Washington, and worked at Boeing
Aircraft for several years. She
then worked in Omaha for an
airplane manufacturer until
1945. In 1949 she moved back to
Chicago where she worked for the
Moody Bible Institute until
1960. In 1964 she began working
as a secretary for Kemper
Insurance in Chicago until
retiring in 1973. In December of
1973 she moved to Kanawha and in
1974 to Klemme.
Evelyn sold and
delivered livestock feed for
McNess Inc. for 22 years,
retiring in August of 1995. She
enjoyed people, gardening,
helping others and remodeling
her home.
She is survived
by her sister, Ruby Lackore of
Clear Lake; niece, Doreen
(Richard) Johnson of Garner; her
nephew's wife, Betty Lackore of
Clear Lake; special friends,
Donna and Kenneth Weiland of
Klemme; and many great-nieces.
Evelyn was
preceded in death by her
parents; sister, Floy Lackore;
brother-in-law, Clark Lackore;
and a nephew, Doran Lackore.

Carol J. Rasmuson, 1921-2006

Carol J.
Rasmuson, 84, of Britt passed
away on Tuesday, June 6, 2006,
at her home in rural Britt.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, June 10,
at the First Lutheran Church in
Britt with Pastor Arlen Lloyd
officiating. Burial was in the
Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The
Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in
Britt was in charge of the
arrangements.
Carol, the
daughter of Edward Leo and
Gladys Beatrice (Bailey)
Cosgriff, was born on June 19,
1921 in Britt. She grew up in
Britt where she attended Britt
schools.
On October 31,
1938, Carol was united in
marriage with William James
Rasmuson in Blue Earth,
Minnesota. The couple lived in
Stilson for two years and then
moved to the family farm near
Eagle Lake where Carol still
resided.
Carol worked on
the family farm many years. She
later worked at the milk plant,
then Britt Tech and later at
Winnebago Industries retiring in
1987.
She loved
spending time with her family
and friends and attending her
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren's
activities. She had a great love
of the outdoors, especially
Eagle Lake Park, with its deer
and wildlife. Carol enjoyed
traveling, golfing and fishing
and loved to sew. Her great
passion was quilting and she had
pieced and quilted many
beautiful quilts.
She was a long
time member of the
Congregational (UCC) Church in
Britt. Carol currently was a
member of the First Lutheran
Church in Britt and the
Elizabeth Circle at First
Lutheran Church. She volunteered
with various groups including
PTA, Music Mothers, Sunday
School, Choir, Unity Class,
Scouts, 4-H, American Legion
Auxiliary, Women's Club and the
Historical Society.
Carol is survived
by five children, Marilyn Bruns
and husband, Raymond of Britt,
Robert Rasmuson and wife, Erlis
of Britt, Marjorie Schrader of
St. Paul, Minnesota, James
Rasmuson of Britt, William J.
Rasmuson of Cape Girardeau,
Missouri; 18 grandchildren,
Brian Bruns, Dirk Bruns, Eric
Bruns, Wade Bruns, Matthew
Bruns, Robin Earles, Gregory
Rasmuson, Todd Rasmuson, Kelly
Rasmuson, Miner Jay Schrader,
Cynthia Cronick, Kurt Schrader,
Troy Rasmuson, Traci Goll, Scott
Kraft, Doug Kraft, Dan Kraft and
Tom Rasmuson; 40
great-grandchildren; sister,
Catherine Devine and husband,
James of Corwith; brother,
Kenneth Cosgriff and wife,
Carolyn of Winton, North
Carolina; and numerous nieces,
nephews and friends.
She was preceded
in death by her parents, Gladys
Bailey Cosgriff and Edward L.
Cosgriff; husband, William James

Caroline L. Kluckhohn, 1922-2006
June 14, 2006
Caroline
Lillian (Schwartz) Kluckhohn,
age 83, most recently a resident
of the Westview Care Center,
Britt and a long time resident
of Klemme, died on Friday, June
9, 2006, at the Westview Care
Center, Britt.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, June 13,
at the Immanuel Reformed United
Church of Christ, Klemme. The
Rev. Donna Buckman officiated.
Burial was in the Ell Township
Cemetery, Klemme. The Andrews
Funeral Home of Klemme was in
charge of the arrangements.
Caroline Schwartz
was born on November 7, 1922, on
a farm at Wesley. Her parents
were Pearl and Celia (Bergman)
Schwartz. In 1929, the family
moved to Klemme where she
attended school and worked for
different families cleaning and
babysitting.
On July 10, 1946,
she was united in marriage to
Kenneth Kluckhohn at Cedar
Falls. To this union were born
two children, a daughter, Carol
and a son, Larry.
She enjoyed going
on bus trips with her husband,
doing embroidery, playing cards
and especially playing bingo.
She also liked to sit by the
window and watch the squirrels
and birds (especially the
Goldfinches) in their backyard.
Caroline worked
at BMD cleaning the offices
while Kenneth cleaned the shop
area. They also did odd jobs
helping people around town. One
thing about Caroline is that
when you stopped by at dinner
time, she always made sure you
had something to eat. She was a
great wife, mother, and
grandmother. You could always
tell when it was Sunday
afternoon because the house was
always filled with polka music
from the radio. Her real
enjoyment was walking to Carol,
Angie, and Jeffs house and
taking care of their dog,
Hershey, her little buddy. While
she was at Westview, she enjoyed
seeing Carol and Angie's new
dog, Pepper, which she named.
She was a member
of the UCC's Women's Fellowship.
She was always willing to help
out at funerals and with
cleaning of the church. Caroline
had been a resident of the
Westview Care Center in Britt,
from October 24, 2003, until the
time of her death.
Left to cherish
her memory is her husband of 59
years, Kenneth Kluckhohn of
Klemme; one daughter, Carol
(Kluckhohn) Marchant of Klemme;
a granddaughter, Angie Kluckhohn
of Klemme; a grandson, Jeff
Marchant and special friend,
Susie of Mason City.
Also surviving is her son, Larry
Kluckhohn and his wife, Marcia
of Garner; a granddaughter,
Kristi Foyt and her husband,
Bruce of Rosemount, Minnesota;
two grandsons, Jason Kluckhohn
and his wife, Nicole of Greer,
South Carolina and Todd
Kluckhohn of Kansas City,
Missouri; three
great-grandchildren, Ryan and
Lauren Foyt, Caleb Kluckhohn; a
sister-in-law, Jean Schwartz of
Belmond; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; two
brothers, Herbert and Harold
Schwartz; a sister, Christina
Olsen and an infant sister.

Yvonne Mattis, 1953-2006
June 21, 2006
Yvonne
Mattis, 52, of Garner, died on
Monday, June 12, 2006, at the
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit, Mason City.
Memorial services
were held on Saturday, June 17,
at the United Presbyterian
Church in Garner with the Rev.
Linzy Collins, Jr. officiating.
Music was provided by organist,
Karen Pedersen. Ushers were
Butch Whitehurst and Gordon
Pringnitz.
Honorary bearers were Vance
Hagen, Travis Hagen, Jason
Eenhuis, Jeremy Eenhuis, Lucas
Eenhuis, Nick Mattis, Matt
Mattis and Jeff Mattis.
Interment was in the St.
Boniface Catholic Cemetery,
Garner. The Cataldo Funeral Home
was in charge of the
arrangements.
Yvonne Mattis,
the daughter of Fred and Tini
(Voskamp) Van Dam was born on
August 24, 1953, at Arnhem, The
Netherlands. She graduated from
high school in The Netherlands.
Yvonne met her
future husband, John Mattis,
while he was serving his country
in the U.S. Air Force in The
Netherlands. On January 20,
1979, they were united in
marriage at the St. Boniface
Catholic Church in Garner.
They lived in
Duncan until 1983, when they
moved to a military base in
Spokane, Washington. In 1984,
they were reassigned to
Ramstein, Germany and in 1988
moved to the Grand Forks Air
Force Base in North Dakota.
During their time at Grand
Forks, Yvonne became a citizen
of the U.S. and was employed as
a chef in the Officer's Club. In
1997, John retired from the
military and they moved back to
Garner where Yvonne worked at
the Concord Care Center, Stellar
Industries and most recently in
the dietary department at the
Hancock County Memorial Hospital
in Britt.
In 2004, she was
diagnosed with lung cancer.
Yvonne had been receiving
treatment at the Cancer Center
in Mason City, St. Marys
Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota
and the Cancer Center in Tulsa,
Oklahoma. She enjoyed partying,
bowling, dancing, exercising and
quilting. She especially enjoyed
visits from her family and
friends from Holland.
She was a member
of the United Presbyterian
Church in Garner.
Yvonne is
survived by her husband, John of
Garner; three children, Yvette
(Michael) Ohotto and their
children, Holden Mattis and
Emmidee and Michael, Jr. Ohotto,
all of Mason City, Johnny Mattis
of Clear Lake and Zachary Mattis
of Garner; her father, Fred Van
Dam; step-father, Salvatore
Adamo; brother, Natale (Katja)
Adamo and their son, Camiel;
brother, Nino Adamo; sister,
Vincenza Adamo; uncle, Joop
(Yachinta) Voskamp and their
children, Maureen and Mark
Voskamp; her mother-in-law,
Catherine Mattis of Garner;
sisters-in-law, Barbara (Larry)
Eenhuis and Ann (Larry) Hagen;
brothers-in-law, Michael (Judy)
Mattis and Mark Mattis; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her mother, Tini
Voskamp Adamo; and her
father-in-law, John Mattis.

William
C. Velau, Jr., 69, of rural
Klemme, died on Tuesday, June
13, 2006, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, June 16, at
the United Methodist Church in
Klemme with the Rev. Paddy Druhl
officiating. Music was provided
by organist, Madelyn Priebe who
accompanied soloist, Lance
Arnold and congregational hymns.
Usher was Raymond Schoenwetter.
Honorary bearers were Pvt. Bryan
Tull and Leah Reinert. Casket
bearers were Lonnie Schmidt,
Gary Tull, Adam Schmidt, Mark
Reinert, Wayne Stahl and Kevin
Stahl. Burial was in the Ell
Township Cemetery, Klemme. The
Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner
was in charge of the
arrangements.
William Christian
Velau, Jr., the son of William
and Lydia (Herwald) Velau, was
born on October 4, 1936, on the
family farm west of Klemme. He
attended the rural schools of
Liberty Township until the
eighth grade and graduated from
the Klemme High School in 1953.
On June 30, 1956,
he married Janet Stahl at the
Methodist parsonage in Klemme.
They made their home on the
family farm west of Klemme where
Bill farmed for 52 years before
retiring.
Bill was a
do-it-yourself type of man
spending many hours in his shop
tinkering. He enjoyed flying
airplanes, motorcycles, antique
cars, hunting, gun collecting
and many other hobbies.
He was a member
of the United Methodist Church
in Klemme.
Bill is survived by his wife,
Janet, of Klemme; four children,
Christine Schmidt and her
husband, Lonnie of Klemme,
Marlene Velau of Klemme, Eileen
Tull and her husband, Gary of
Humboldt and Sam Velau of
Klemme; three grandchildren,
Leah Reinert and her husband,
Mark, Adam Schmidt and Pvt.
Bryan Tull; a sister, Kathryn
Alden of Clear Lake; and many
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded
in death by his parents;
grandson, Sgt. Gregory Tull; and
a sister, Eva Fatland.

Mary A. Kucera, 1918-2006
June 21, 2006
Mary
Agnes Kucera, 88, a resident of
the Sunny Hill Care Center in
Tama, and formerly of Garner,
died on Saturday morning, June
17, 2006, at the center
following a lengthy illness
under the care of the Iowa River
Hospice.
A Funeral Liturgy
was held on Monday, June 19,
2006, at the St. Patrick's
Catholic Church in Tama with
Rev. Michael Schueller as
Celebrant. Interment followed in
the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in
rural Clutier. The
Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home,
Tama, was in charge of the
arrangements.
Mary was born on
January 21, 1918 in rural Tama
County, the daughter of Anton
and Anna Zmolek Kucera. She
worked as a housekeeper for
Monsignor John Chihak from 1945
until 1986, following him to
several parishes.
Mary was a member
of various Altar and Rosary
Societies and KD Lodge #130. She
enjoyed sewing, fishing, hunting
mushrooms, canning and gardening
and mastered the art of smoking
fish.
Survivors include
two sisters, Frances (CJ)
Wobeter of Toledo and Genevieve
Kucera of Clutier; many nieces,
nephews, great-nieces, and
great-nephews; and three
sister-in-laws, Margaret Kucera,
Mamie Kucera, and Lillian Kucera
She was preceded
in death by her parents; four
brothers, Philip, Anthony,
Joseph, and Frank Kucera; a
sister, Anna Hlas; and
sister-in-laws, Agnes (Philip)
Kucera and Agnes (Tony) Kucera.

Duane K. Juhl, 1936-2006

Garner native
Duane K. "Tooley" Juhl, 70, of
Fairbury, Nebraska, died on
Sunday, June 25, 2006.
Funeral services will be held on
Thursday, June 29, at 10:00
a.m., at the St. Michael's
Catholic Church in Fairbury.
Burial will be in the Fairbury
Cemetery. The Gerdes-Meyer
Funeral Home of Fairbury is in
charge of the arrangements.
Duane Juhl was
born on March 22, 1936, at
Garner to Kenneth and Reta
(Knoll) Juhl.
Survivors include
his beloved companion of 30
years, Sue Meredith of Fairbury;
daughters, Anne Schoemaker of
Lincoln, Nebraska, Theresa
Buchli of Fairbury and Monica
Meredith of Deerfield, North
Dakota; sons, John Juhl of
Lincoln, Paul Juhl and J.D.
Meredith of Fairbury; ten
grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
