Dorothy Hampel

Dorothy Hampel, 82, of Garner, Iowa, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church with the Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Interment was in Concord Township Cemetery.

Dorothy Esther Hampel, daughter of William L. and Reka Christina (Goll) Haberkamp was born May 11, 1916 at Garner. She attended school at Garner, graduating in 1933. After receiving her Normal Teaching Certificate, she taught in a rural school near Garner for three years. On Nov. 28, 1936, she was married to Arnold "Bub" Hampel in Garner. They made their home in Garner. She began working for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Garner in 1945. After moving to Clear Lake in 1963, she continued to work for Northwestern Bell as a PBX instructor in Mason City, Iowa, retiring in 1981. In 1983, they returned to Garner and built their retirement home. Dorothy enjoyed quilting, knitting, golfing, flower arranging and gardening.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church where she taught Bible School, Woman’s Fellowship and was a life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and the D.A.V. Auxiliary. She also was a member of the Knit and Pearl Club, Telephone Pioneers, Ventura Federated Garden Club and a former member of the Sweet Adelines and Toastmaster’s Club.

She is survived by her husband, Arnold "Bub" Hampel, Garner, currently residing at Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City; four children, Bill Hampel and his wife, Minnie, of Denver, Colo., Kay Griffith and her husband, Michael, of Oxford, Ohio, Patricia Hampel of Boulder, Colo., and Elizabeth DenHartog and her husband, Michael, Clear Lake; 10 grandchildren, David Hampel, Walter Hampel, Serena Eads, Cameron Griffith, Laura Austin, Arian Hampel, Elise Chipman, Daman DenHartog, Neal DenHartog and Kelsey DenHartog; two great-grandchildren, Christie Lyn Hampel and Kayla Hampel; and four sisters, Stella Hase of Odebolt, Iowa, Frances Revland of Garner, Lyda Swanson of Klemme, Iowa, and Margaret Rutz of Garner; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Barbara Hampel; her parents; and a brother, Clarence Haberkamp.

Music was provided by organist, Mrs. Margaret Jass who accompanied soloist, Loren Kalkwarf. Ushers were Dean Goll and Al DeWitt.

Honorary pallbearers were Kirk Kinsella, Alfred Peterson, Opal Hamilton, Shirley Haes, Gordon Haes, Eunice Kinsella, Teressa Anderson and Grace Ausmus.

Pallbearers were Daman DenHartog, Neal DenHartog, Michael DenHartog, Tom Hyde, Michael Griffith and Dick Rutz.


Kenneth Wayne Post

Kenneth Wayne Post, 75, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held today (Wednesday), Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. His body was cremated. Inurnment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Kenneth W. Post Memorial Fund.

Kenneth was born Sept. 14, 1923, in Algona, Iowa, the son of Walter and Nellie Ada (Stewart) Post. The family moved to Clear Lake in 1926 where Kenneth attended school. Kenneth was a salesman for Kelco Economentte Co., a drug sundried company, from 1951-1972. In 1972 he purchased the Coffee Shop. Later he worked for Garth Restaurant (now known as the North Beach), Easter Foods as the dairy supervisor for 10 years. He worked with Walt Leslie painting and doing other odd jobs, and the Milepost 194 Truck Stop. Organizations he enjoyed included the Clear Lake Evening Lions and Toastmasters.

His greatest love was going and having coffee with the guys and sharing jokes. Clear Lake was the best place in the world for him and he had the greatest friends here.

He is survived by his children, Cal Mohr and his wife, Doreen, Surprise, Ariz., Kim Bliss, Kit Post, Kelly Mohr, all of Phoenix, Ariz., and Lori Dickerson and her husband, Darren, Clear Lake; 14 grandchildren, Chris, Jeremy, Jennifer, Rick, Nicole, Johnny, Rana, Zachary, Megan, Nikia, Chanz, Benjamin, Alexander and Brianne; three great-grandchildren, Timothy, Douglas (twins) and Richie.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents.


Helen B. Farwell

Mrs. Helen B. Farwell, 73, formerly of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), Oct. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Graveside services will be held at the Elmwood Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa. The family suggests memorials to the Helen B. Farwell Memorial Fund in lieu of flowers.

Helen was born Nov. 18, 1924 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Elsie Turner and Howard Sandergard. She graduated from East High School, Waterloo, in 1942. She married John R. Farwell July 21, 1946 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa.

Helen worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo until 1960. They then moved to Clear Lake.

Helen owned and operated the Tasty Freeze on South Shore Dr., Clear Lake from 1963-68. She then owned and operated the Chalet Lamp and Gift Shop on South Shore Dr. for over 20 years retiring in 1990.

Helen enjoyed serving the public, being with people, playing bridge, Bingo and going to the Casino’s. She moved to the I.O.O.F. in Mason City in November 1995.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Weber, and her husband, Wayne, Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband in 1990.


Rev. Kenneth H. Ubbelohde

Rev. Kenneth H. Ubbelohde, 79, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, in Miami, Ariz. He was cremated and memorial services will held at a later time. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, is in charge of services.


 

Jane R. Schultz

On Sunday, Oct. 18, there will be a service of interment for the mortal remains of Jane R. Schultz, formerly of Clear Lake.

The brief service will be held after regular Sunday services at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, 1st N.E. and Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, Iowa. It will be held at the Columbarium in the  church at 11:15 a.m.

Following the service, in the Parish Hall, there will be an opportunity to visit with Jane’s husband, A.W. "Dutch" Schultz. Jane was born on July 12, 1922, and died in St. Joseph, Mo., on July 15, 1998.


Mary Rose Maxson

Mary Rose Maxson, 61, of Clear Lake, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 13, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with the Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

Mary was born March 28, 1937 in Mankato, Minn., the daughter of Roland and Ursala (Wagner) Siebenbrunner. She graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School, Garner, Iowa in 1955. She later attended North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City.

Mary enjoyed her grandchildren, reading, raising flowers, practical jokes and collecting knick knacks. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake.

She is survived by six children, Daniel P. Johnson and his wife, Judy, Council Bluffs, Iowa, R. Lee Johnson and his wife, Cinda, Broomfield, Colo.; Susan Kennedy and her husband, Charles, Fertile, Iowa, Russell D. Johnson and his wife, Lora, Milo, Iowa, David Walter Maxson and his wife, Angeleeta, Des Moines, Iowa, and William J. Maxson, Iowa City, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Kristin Johnson, Summer Johnson, Heather Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Erik Johnson, Nicholas Johnson, Baree Weber, Eric Weber, Troy Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Shane Maxson, Stuart Maxson, Chelsea Maxson and Eric Maxson; two sisters, Jean Haight and her husband, Robert, Mason City, and Anita Friest and her husband, Ken, Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Richard Johnson in 1988.


Jane Berhow

Jane Berhow, 74, of Garner, Iowa, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner, with the Rev. David Wiersbe of the Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake officiating. Burial of the cremains was in Concord Township Cemetery.

Nancy Jane Berhow, the daughter of Leonard Frank and Ann Elizabeth (Colburn) Hare, was born May 14, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa. She attended school in Des Moines, graduating from high school in 1943. On July 19, 1944 she was united in marriage to John Harlan Berhow in Des Moines. They made their home in Des Moines where she worked at the Ankeny War Plant. In 1949, they moved to Hampton, Iowa, and in 1962 in Garner where they owned and operated Berhow Plumbing and Heating for 13 years. Jane also operated J & K Woodfinishing for many years. In December of 1997, she moved to Westview Care Center in Britt, Iowa. She enjoyed her family, fishing, cross-country skiing and teaching her grandchildren to play baseball.

She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Mason City, Wa Tan Ye’s and Sweet Adelines.

She is survived by four daughter, Susan Berhow-Rivera of Apple Valley, Minn., Sandra Quintus and her husband, Steven, Garner, Christine Greiman and her husband, Bill, of Klemme, Iowa, and Jennifer Berhow Hanson and her husband, Kevin, of Ventura, Iowa; grandchildren, Jonathan Berhow-Rivera, Andrea Berhow-Rivera, Nelson Berhow-Rivera, Erin Fortin and her husband, Andy, Terra Bill and her husband, Rodney, Abraham Quintus and Samuel Quintus, Natasha Berhow, Rockford Berhow, Brandon Berhow Goll, Blair Berhow-Goll and Dalton Berhow-Goll; a great-granddaughter, Mikaella Berhow-Rivera; and five step-grandchildren, Thomas Greiman, Sheena Greiman, Tara Greiman, Rebecca Hanson and Katie Hanson; a brother, Charles M. Hare and his wife, Esther, of Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Opal Clark and her husband, Max, of Tyler, Texas; six nieces and nephews, Richard Hare, William Hare, John Hare, Mary Swarm, Barbara Griemer and Frank Hare.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, Dec. 9, 1976; a daughter, Nancy Berhow, May 23, 1966; her parents; and a brother, Richard C. Hare.

Mrs. Dean Cataldo, organist, accompanied Joel Doble, soloist.

Honorary pallbearers were grandsons, Jonathan Berhow-Rivera, Nelson Berhow-Rivera, Abraham Quintus, Samuel Quintus, Rockford Berhow, Brandon Berhow Goll, Dalton Berhow Goll, Charles Hare and Richard Hare.


Virgil and Sydney Bridges

Word has been received of the deaths of former Clear Lake residents, Virgil and Sydney Bridges. They were killed in an accident near Nashville, Tenn., when their car collided with a semi.

They are survived by their daughter, Mrs. Gary (Marilyn) Ward, 2317 Roundtree Road, Knoxville, Tenn. 37923.


Rod Taylor

Rod Taylor, 61, of Ionia, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the Congregational Church in New Hampton, with the Rev. Carol Krause officiating. Private inurnment will be held at a later date in the New Hampton Cemetery.

Rodney Albert Taylor was born in Lime Springs on Jan. 7, 1937, the son of Albert and Evaline (Schumause) Taylor. At the age of 10, his father died and he made his home with his mothers, brothers and sister at their grandmother’s. He graduated from Cresco High School where he was a star wrestler.

On Aug. 5, 1955, he was married to Elinor Foote in Sioux Falls, S.D. They lived in various towns before settling in Ionia where Rod set up his asphalt plant. Rod worked for many years laying asphalt and digging graves for many cemeteries in Floyd, Chickasaw, and Howard counties.

He is survived by his wife, Elinor; one daughter, Shirly Holm, of Charles City; four sons, Rick, Gary, Randy and Mike, all of Ionia; 11 grandchildren; his mother and step-father, Evaline and Ray Fulcher of Cresco; two brothers, Pat, Cresco, and Tom of Stevens Point, Wis; two sisters, Betty Shea of Lime Springs, and Elenor Wubben of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his father, Albert and a sister, Shirley.


Malcolm Dale Wissler

Malcolm Dale Wissler, 73, of Atlantic, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, at 1:30 p.m. at the Roland Funeral Home, Atlantic, with the Pastor Ron Barnett of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Malcolm, the son of Max and Velma Ruth Mauk Wissler, was born Aug. 10, 1925, east of Lewis where he grew up. He graduated from Lewis High School in 1943. His marriage to Lela Mae Anderson took place on Dec. 16, 1944, at the Methodist Church in Lewis. They lived in Shelby and Cass Counties where he farmed from 1944 to 1957; worked for International Farm Equipment from 1957 to 1962; and was then employed by Walnut Grove Products in Atlantic. They moved to Sun Lakes, Ariz., in 1983. Lela died Feb. 3, 1994, in Sun Lakes and Malcolm moved back to Atlantic in June of 1998 following health problems. Malcolm was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge; Atlantic Elks Lodge #445; and was a 4-H leader.

He is survived by a son, Clyde Eugene Wissler and his wife, Kathy of Clear Lake; one daughter, Janet Gruber and her husband, Jim, of Murray, Neb.; four grandchildren, Amber, Brooke, and Marshal Wissler, all of Clear Lake, and Byron Gruber of Murray, Neb.; one brother, Marion Wissler and his wife, Carolyn of Des Moines; one sister, Betty Watson of Lincoln, Neb.; and a number of nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Lucille Alff, of Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lela; and one son, Larry Wissler, May of 1962.


 

Bula Mae Becker

Bula Mae Becker, 86, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at her home.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 19, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel. Graveside services were held at the Masonic Cemetery, Dallas Center, Iowa. Memorials can be made to the Hospice of North Iowa.

Bula was born on Aug. 27, 1912, in Perry, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer Martin and Mary Louise (Young) Brelsford. She attended Boone County schools. Bula married Matthew John Hill in 1933. They had four children. They lived in Perry, Iowa. On May 29, 1956, she married Marlowe Becker. They moved to Clear Lake in the late 1960s where she had lived ever since.

Bula loved crocheting, traveling, metal detecting and fishing.

She is survived by her son, Don Hill and his wife, Sandy, Boone, Iowa; two daughters, Velma Brown and her husband, Dean, Leavenworth, Wash., and Betty Erwin, Everett, Wash.; two step-daughters, Sandy Heard and her husband, Rollie, Rockford, Iowa, and Elaine Smith, and her husband, Keith, Mannford, Okla; one daughter-in-law, Erma Hill, Everett, Wash.; one step-daughter-in-law, Sophie Becker, Eagle River, Wis.; two sisters, Betty Heffern and her husband, Cletus, Mason City, Iowa, and Katherine Fisher and her husband, Claude, Mountain View, Mo.; three brothers, Marion Brelsford, Perry, Iowa, Lloyd Brelsford and his wife, Lila, Jefferson, Iowa, Delbert Brelsford and his wife, Fern, Perry; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Brelsford and Goldie Brelsford, Perry; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and 14 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marlowe, in 1993; a son, Robert in 1988; two brothers, Kenneth and Harold Brelsford; one step-son, Dean Becker; and one sister-in-law, Erna Brelsford.


 

Phyllis M. Rod

Phyllis M. Rod, 50, of Yuma, Ariz., formerly of Denver and Clear Lake, Iowa, died Oct. 21, 1998 at her home in Yuma of cancer.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 25, with the Rev. Dean Hess and the Rev. Doctor Steven Ullestad, Bishop, conducted the service. Graveside services were held Monday, Oct. 26, at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denver, Zion United Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, or Gloria de Cristo Lutheran Church building fund in Yuma.

Phyllis was born Feb. 3, 1948, in rural Lone Rock, Iowa, the daughter of A.B. and Ella Jensen Cherland. She received her education at Central Schools, rural Fenton, Iowa; Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, and graduated from Fairview Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minn. in 1970 as a registered nurse. She married Robert Rod on May 29, 1971 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley, Minn. She worked most recently in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, before moving to Arizona in April of 1977.

She was a member of Gloria de Cristo Lutheran Church in Yuma, the women of the ELCA, and was a volunteer in the surgical family waiting area at Yuma Regional Medical Center.

She is survived by her parents, of Algona, Iowa; her husband, Bob, of Yuma, Ariz.; a son, Jason of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a daughter, Sonja, Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers and wives and children, Donald and Debra Cherland, Tim and Andrew of St. Paul, Minn; Roger and Cheryl Cherland, Jennifer, John and Jill of rural Lone Rock, Iowa, and Steven and Darlene Cherland, Keith, Kevin and Cole of rural Lone Rock; her mother-in-law, Inge Rod of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, John and Sharon Jahnke and their children, Kristin and Hans, St. Paul, Iowa.  


Shelly J. Rose

Shelly J. Rose, 42, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1998.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 24, at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Internment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Shelly was born Dec. 24, 1955 in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Orvin and Margaret (Baker) Vaage. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1974. She worked at Pamida and the Lake Theater. Shelly married Darvin Rose on Nov. 6, 1976 at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake. They lived in Forest City, Iowa, and Garner, Iowa, before moving permanently to Clear Lake in 1988. She owned and operated her own day care center since 1978. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School at the Methodist Church both in Garner and Clear Lake.

Shelly enjoyed going to antique shops and craft shops. Friends and family remember her for always putting others first before herself, her great sense of humor, her love of music, her good cooking and most of all she enjoyed family gatherings. She loved doing crafts, arranging flowers, painting, being outdoors and drawing pictures for her kids. She loved the fall.

She is survived by her husband, Darvin Rose, Clear Lake; her mother, Margaret Vaage, Clear Lake; two daughters, Carrie Rose and Angie Rose, of Clear Lake; one brother, Randy Vaage and his wife, Linda, and their children, Jennifer, Michele and Jeff Vaage, Clear Lake; mother-in-law, Laura Rose, Morgan, Minn.; two brother-in-laws, Russell Rose and his wife, Karen, Sleepy Eye, Minn., DuWayne Evenson, Minnesota Lakes, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Sandy Torkelson and her husband, Bernie, Granite Falls, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her father, Orvin Vaage, August 1987; her sister-in-law, Mary Lou Evenson; and her father-in-law, Marvin Rose.


Marvin G. Hansmeier

Marvin G. Hansmeier, 68, of Fertile, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998 at North Iowa Mercy Health Center’s east campus, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Church of Christ in Fertile, with the Rev. Denny Ganz officiating. Burial was in Brush Point Cemetery, rural Fertile.

The family suggests memorials to the Marvin G. Hansmeier Memorial Fund.

Marvin was born Nov. 13, 1929 on a farm near Foley, Minn., the son of John and Anna (Meier) Hansmeier. He married Joan Gray on Oct. 8, 1949 in Foley. The couple moved to Fertile in the spring of 1954. He worked for farmers in the Fertile area and was employed at the soybean plant in Mason City, Iowa, for more than 25 years. He also worked at the Cenex Station, which he later owned and operated under the name of Marv’s Service until the time of his death.

Marvin enjoyed working and watching sports, as well as the companionship of his buddies and customers at his station. He will be greatly missed by his family and a host of friends.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in Fertile.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, Fertile; five sons, Bruce Hansmeier and his wife, Glenna, Clear Lake, Mick Hansmeier and his wife, Deb, Minneapolis, Minn., Doug Hansmeier and his wife, Lisa, Maple Grove, Minn., Craig Hansmeier and his wife, Dawn, of Fertile, and Todd Hansmeier of Clear Lake; two brothers, Robert Hansmeier and his wife, Jerry, of Aberdeen, Wash., and Roland Hansmeier of Foley, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Joe, Renee, Courtney, Brent, Shane, Dan, Tara, Abby and John; and one great-granddaughter, Taylor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ralph and Willard Hansmeier.


Leland E. (Lee) Harthan

Leland E. (Lee) Harthan, 88, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998 at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Inurnment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. The family suggests memorials to the Leland E. Harthan Memorial fund. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of services.

Lee was born Oct. 1, 1910 in rural Ventura, Iowa, the son of Benjamin and Ethel (Auchampach) Harthan. He farmed in the the Thornton, Iowa, and Ventura area. He later moved to Clear Lake where he worked for the Iowa Liquor Control Commission until his retirement.

He is survived four children, Jack Harthan, Ventura, Joan Collins and her husband, Duane, Clear Lake, Janice Harthan-Kerdus and her husband, Robert, Mason City, and Jerry Harthan and his wife, Carmella, Clear Lake; one brother, Harris B. Harthan and his wife, Henrietta, West Los Angeles, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn (Miller) Harthan; and one sister, Kathryn Jante.


Arthur Gilbert

Arthur Gilbert, 88, of Delmar, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998 at his home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Arthur was born Sept. 12, 1910 in Lockport, N.Y. On May 17, 1936 he was united in marriage to Annabelle Neilsen in Northwood, Iowa. She died November 1992. They farmed in the Clear Lake area and Delmar area where the couple lived for 33 years near his son. Arthur was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

He is survived by a daughter, Diana Carlson and her husband, Gary, Blooming Prairie, Minn.; two sons, Delbert Gilbert and his wife, Dorothy, Delmar, and Duane Gilbert and his wife, Patricia, Clear Lake; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Jennie Eaton, Olean, N.Y., Viola Mazza, Frendale, Wash., Mary Avery, Boston, Mass., Kathryn Scutella, Olean, and Grace Brastad, Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one sister; and two brothers.


Darlene G. Reysack

Darlene G. Reysack, 70, of Thornton, Iowa, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998 at the Sunrise Healthcare Center, Mason City, Iowa.

She was cremated and inurnment will be at the Pleasantview Cemetery, Thornton, Iowa. Memorials may be given to the Darlene G. Reysack Memorial Fund c/o Elizabeth Reysack, PO Box 181, Thornton, Iowa 50479. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

Darlene was born June 10, 1928, in Thornton, Iowa. She was raised by her mother Lucille E. (Harken) Prilipp and maternal grandfather, George M. Harken. She graduated from Thornton High School in 1945 with honors. Darlene lived there until her marriage to Theodore R. (Ted) Reysack Dec. 10, 1954. She worked in the Mason City-Thornton area as a telephone operator for a number of years until she lost her voice for over three years. Ted worked as a farm hand in the surrounding area for a time until they moved to Hampton in the late 1950s and lived there over 30 years. She and her daughter, Beth, moved to rural Swaledale. In 1993 Darlene and Beth’s family moved to Thornton. Darlene move to the nursing home Nov. 20, 1997.

Darlene was baptized, confirmed and married in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thornton, Iowa. In her later years she was unable to attend churches due to her ill health. While she was able, she attended various Non Denominational Pentecostal affiliated churches.

Darlene enjoyed her children and extended family, especially her grandson Tony. They were the ones who gave her, her greatest joy in life as well as her abiding faith in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She liked to read, knit, word puzzle books, listen to the radio and watch TV, and talk with her family in person and on the phone.

She is survived by her son, Randy D. Reysack and his wife, Sandra, Thornton, Iowa; one daughter, Elizabeth (Beth) Reysack and her husband, Gary Overbeck, Thornton; one grandson, Tony Reysack, Clear Lake; step-grandchildren, Lucinda McDonald and Benjamin McDonald, Thornton; a special friend (like a daughter) Barb Benge; and other special relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandfather, George M. Harkin, and infant son, Timothy Vernon Reysack.
