William (Bill) M.
Westberg
Mr. William (Bill) M. Westberg, 72, of Clear Lake,
Iowa, died Wednesday, July 28, 1998 at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City,
Iowa.
Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 3, at the
United Methodist Church, Clear Lake. Interment was
in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. The Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
arrangements. The family suggests memorials to the
Clear Lake Community School Athletic Dept.
Bill was born Dec. 4, 1925 in Boone, Iowa, the
son of Gust Espe and Esther (Moard) Westberg. He
graduated from Boone High School in 1942. Following
high school he enlisted in the United States Navy
and served during World War II.
After the service Bill moved back to Iowa and
graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with
a degree in education. He then taught at Urbana High
School, Urbana, Iowa, then Klemme, Iowa, where he
was physical education dept. and also boys
basketball coach. Bill married Betty Etchen in
Klemme. They moved to Clear Lake in the fall of 1961
where he was in the physical education dept. and
later athletic director until his retirement in the
spring of 1987.
Bill officiated many girls softball games and
boys basketball games. He was an avid Hawkeye fan,
Cub fan, and enjoyed playing golf and cribbage.
Bill was a member of the United Methodist Church,
Clear Lake, and the Iowa State Education
Association.
He is survived by a son, Dr. Mark Westberg and
his wife, Rebecca, Clive, Iowa, and one daughter,
Susan Anderson, and her husband, Harlan, Englewood,
Colo.; five grandchildren, Jonathan Westberg, Curtis
Anderson, Laura Westberg, Meghan Anderson and Ashley
Anderson; one sister, Jane Seiffert and her husband,
Jerry, Iowa City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife
in 1976.
Thelma Mathews Best
Thelma Mathews Best, 88, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
formerly of Thornton, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 28,
1998 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 31, at
the United Methodist Church, Thornton. Interment was
at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton, with the
Rev. Jim Gochenouer officiating. The Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements. The
family suggests memorials to the Thelma Mathews Best
Memorial Fund.
Thelma was born Oct. 5, 1909, south of Thornton
to Alvin and Nellie (Ashby) Baker. She attended
country school and graduated from Thornton High
School in 1927. On Nov. 29, 1928 she was united in
marriage to John Mathews. To this union was born a
son, Donald, and a daughter, Marilyn, deceased at
birth. They lived in Charles City, Iowa, a short
time before moving back to the Thornton area, where
they farmed until John’s death in 1957.
In 1959, she was united in marriage to Floyd Best
and they made their home on a farm near Rockwell,
Iowa. In 1966, Floyd passed away and she returned to
her home in Thornton, where she continued to live
until this spring, when she moved into Oakwood Care
Center in Clear Lake.
Thelma loved to play cards, work in her garden
and always enjoyed visiting with her many friends
and family.
She is survived by her son, Donald Mathews and
his wife, Shirley, of Clear Lake; three
grandchildren, Kirk Mathews and his wife, Elizabeth,
of Hampton, Iowa, Karmen Bauer, of Clear Lake,
Jolene Huinker and her husband, Larry, of West
Union, Iowa; and one great-great grandchild,
Brittany Vrchoticky.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two
husbands; her daughter, Marilyn; and one brother,
Lloyd Baker.
Duane R. Floy
Mr. Duane R. Floy, 69, of Clear Lake, died
Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 6,
at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church,
Clear Lake, with the Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka
officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake
Cemetery. Military honors will be by the Clear Lake
VFW. A scriptural wake
service will be held today (Wednesday), Aug. 5,
at 7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel,
Clear Lake, followed by K.C. Rosary. Duane was
born Sept. 19, 1928 in rural Forest City, Iowa, the
son of John and Pearl (Johnson) Floy. He attended
school in Fertile, Iowa. Following school he served
in the Army during World War II. After the service
he moved back to the Clear Lake area.
Duane drove school bus for Ventura Schools and
drove truck for Lau Trucking Lines in Fertile. He
later worked at the Feed Mill in Garner in late fall
of 1951 to early spring of 1952. He married Ida
DeWeerdt on Nov. 7, 1951 at St. Boniface Catholic
Church, Garner, Iowa. Hen then went to work for
Clear Lake Sand and Gravel. He worked for Cerro
Gordo Road Maintenance Department for over 29 years,
retiring in 1991. After his retirement he was the
custodian and handy man for St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church.
Duane enjoyed working in the garage, helping his
neighbors, visiting with people and the fishing
trips to Leach Lake.
He was a member of St. Patrick���s Catholic Church
and the American Legion in Clear Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Ida Floy, Clear Lake;
three children, Kathy Kliven and her husband, Don,
Valley City, N.D., Mark Floy and his wife, Pam,
LeMars, Iowa, and Lisa Floy, Clear Lake; two
sisters, Roselee Stockseth and her husband, Merlin,
Belmond, Iowa, Vida Sutherland and her husband,
Robert, Sandy, Ore.; and one brother, Lehman Floy
and his wife, Shirley, Mesa, Ariz.; six
grandchildren, Tania Kliven, Holly Kliven, Chad
Kliven, Ryan Floy, Andrew Floy and Samantha Floy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one
brother, Marlowe Floy; and one sister, Mavis Stehn.

Dorothy Lucile
Gobeli Dorothy Lucile Gobeli, 82, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Friday, Aug. 8, 1998 at the home of her
daughter in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 11 at
Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev.
Randy Scheil officiating. Burial was in Memorial
Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.
Dorothy Lucile Gobeli was born Jan. 12, 1916 in
Green Mountain, Iowa, daughter of Charley A. and
Minnie Vernal (Randall) Hill. She married Albert
Phillip Gobeli on Sept. 29, 1936 in Clear Lake.
Dorothy grew up in Green Mountain and throughout
the years worked as a nurses aid. She and her
husband farmed near Thornton, Iowa, for 14 years and
then farmed north of Clear Lake for 42 years until
retiring and moving into Clear Lake in 1991.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, quilting and
baking. She was an active member of Evangelical Free
Church, where she helped cook for Senior Citizens.
She is survived by one son, DeLon R. Gobeli,
Waterloo, Iowa; two daughters, Marlys Law and her
husband, Jerry, Cedar Rapids, and Marcella Manyik
and her husband, Earl, LaJunta, Colo.; six
grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren;
one brother, Richard Hill, and his wife, Ruth, Clear
Lake; three sisters-in-law, Merridy Hill, Mason
City, Charlotte Hill, Ventura, Iowa, and Madeline
Hill, Waterloo, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband; one son, Albert DeLoss Gobeli; two
grandsons; and three brothers.
Brian Stewart Wilder
Brian Stewart Wilder, 38, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, while working in DeWitt,
Iowa.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, Aug. 11 at
Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with
the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial was in the
Clear Lake Cemetery.
Brian Stewart was born Feb. 28, 1960, in Mason
City, Iowa, son of Stewart and Lenna (Mariner)
Wilder. Brian grew up in Clear Lake and graduated
from Clear Lake High School in 1978.
Shortly after graduating Brian worked as a meat
cutter then worked seven years at Water Tower Paint
and Repair. He then worked two years at Clear Lake
Sanitary and Sewer, three years at Rochester
Sanitary and Sewer, and then returned to Water Tower
Paint and Repair where he worked the past seven
years. He enjoyed archery, hunting, fishing, running
his dogs, and playing cribbage.
He is survived by his son, Nathan Wilder,
Humboldt, Iowa; his parents, Stewart and Lenna
Wilder, Garner, Iowa; five sisters, Bonnie Gehringer
and her husband, Ron, Longmont, Colo., Beth Moen and
her husband, Barry, Sheridan, Wyo., Barbara Wallner
and her husband, Jeff, Virginia, Minn., Becky
Spilman and her husband, Randy, Clear Lake, and
Brenda Hughes, Peoria, Ariz.; his maternal
grandmother, Yolanda Mariner, Mason City; 11 nieces
and nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal
grandfather, Wilson J. Mariner; his paternal
grandparents, Frank and Lillian Wilder; and several
uncles.
Vera Mae Hanson
Vera Mae Hanson, 77, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died
Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at her home.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday),
Aug. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th St., Clear Lake, with
Hospice Chaplin John Ayers officiating. Burial will
be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy. 18 West,
Mason City, Iowa.
The family of Vera Mae Hanson has requested that
memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North
Iowa in her memory.
Vera Mae Hanson was born on Aug. 22, 1920, in
Garner, Iowa, the daughter of John and Rosina Della
Mae (Maitland) Hyde. She attended and received her
education in the Ventura Schools, graduating from
Ventura High School in 1938. She also attended and
graduated from LaJames Beauty College in Mason City.
She was united in marriage to
Allan Dale Hanson on Jan. 8, 1942, in the Little
Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded her in
death on Dec. 18, 1989. Vera owned and operated her
own beauty shop in Meservey, Iowa, for a few years
and also worked for Fatland Bakery in Clear Lake and
sewed cap and gowns in her home for over 10 years
for P.T. Castle Cap and Gowns. She enjoyed
gardening, knitting, flowers, and playing Bingo, but
her great love and enjoyment was her family.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Clear
Lake and was a former member of the Moose Lodge.
She is survived by her four children, Thomas L.
Hanson and his wife, Judy, of Lake Crystal, Minn.,
Michael A. Hanson and his wife, Joice, of Ventura,
Iowa, Caroline M. Arthur, and her husband, David, of
Austin, Texas, Richard D. Hanson and his wife,
Loreen, of Todville; eight grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Marsh and her
husband, Albert, of Clear Lake; as well as other
relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan;
her parents; two sisters, Mildred Hyde and Velma
Jasperson; two brothers, Russell Hyde and Kenneth
Hyde, Sr.
Ethel (Maggie) B.
Carrell
Ethel (Maggie) B. Carrell, 93, died Tuesday, July
21, 1998 at the St. JamesNursing Center, St. James,
Mo. She was a former resident of Clear Lake, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 30, at
the St. James Christian Church, St. James, with the
minister David Menge officiating. Burial was in
Davis Cemetery, Maries County, Mo.

Ethel Carrell was born on Jan. 2, 1905, the only
surviving sibling of the W.E. Ballance family. A
native of Phelps County, Mo., she lived in various
locations in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. The past
18 years were spent in St. James. Her kindly
feelings and concerns touched the lives of many
friends and family. She was a devout Christian and a
member of the St. James Christian Church.
Soloist was Guy Gardine with Ann Luther as
organist.
Pallbearers were her grandsons Tom, Ted, Sam,
Greg and Gerald Carrell, and nephew, Homer Halbert.

Michael B. Wood
Michael B. Wood, 25, of Hampton, Iowa, died
Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998 at North Iowa Mercy Health
Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 15 at
the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, with the
Rev. Gregory Smith officiating. Burial was in
Hampton Cemetery, Hampton.
Michael Wood was born on Dec. 5, 1972 in Hampton,
the son of Robert Wood and Tonda Overton. He
received his education at Hampton High School. He
married Brandy Rapp on March 24, 1994 in Mason City.
Michael was employed at Andrews Prestressed Concrete
In., Clear Lake.
He enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Brandy Wood, Garner,
Iowa; three children, Robert Wood and Dakota Wood,
of Garner, and Alisha Wood, Hampton; mother, Tonda,
Hampton; brothers, Art Wood and David Wood, of
Hampton, and Russel Wood, Eldora, Iowa; sisters,
Jennifer Arenholz, Dumont and Bethany Beresford,
Northwood, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father;

Beulah M. Carlton
Mrs. Beulah M. Carlton, 80, of Clear Lake, Iowa,
died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998 at the Oakwood Care
Center, Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 15, at
the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with
the Rev. Fred Lewis of the United Methodist Church,
Clear Lake, officiating. Following the service, the
body was cremated.
The family suggests memorials be made in her
name.
Beulah Margaret Carlton was born May 17, 1918 at
Lawrence, Penn., the daughter of James and Edith
(Griffith) Barron. After living in several small
southwestern Pennsylvania towns, her family moved to
Washington, Penn., where she resided from the age of
seven to the time she left home for college.
She graduated from Washington High School in
1936. After working for a year as a telephone
operator, she took a year of college work at
Waynesburg College, Waynesburg, Penn. She then
transferred to The National College for Christian
Workers, Kansas City, Mo., from which she graduated
in June 1941.
In the spring of 1940, she met Lawrence Carlton,
the young minister-brother of her classmate, Harriet
Carlton, when he came to visit his sister at their
college in Kansas City. Following her graduation,
she accepted a position as the chaplain for 90
student nurses at Sibley Memorial Hospital in
Washington, D.C., a position she held for two years.
On Aug. 30, 1943, she was united in marriage to
Rev. Lawrence Carlton at her parents’ church in
Coraopolis, Penn. At that time, Lawrence was pastor
of the Logan/Prairie View charge in northwestern
Kansas. Their daughter Nancy was born there.
In September 1944, her husband was appointed to
the Cunningham/Cairo charge in southern Kansas,
where they served for three years. Their son, James,
was born there.
In 1947, Lawrence arranged a transfer to Iowa,
where they lived the rest of their lives.
Beulah was an invaluable aide to her husband as
he served the following appointments: youth director
of the Iowa Area of the United Methodist Church,
during which time they lived in Des Moines, Iowa,
(1947-1949); Riverside Church, Sioux Cit, Iowa,
(1949-1957); associate pastor of St. John’s Church,
Davenport, Iowa, (1957-1967); Charles City Central
(1967-1969), during the tornado that community
experienced; West Liberty, Iowa, (1969-1975), from
which her husband retired in June, 1975.
At that time they moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where
Lawrence served as the minister of visitation for
First United Methodist Church for seven years.
Beulah worked as a secretary in the Davenport
Medical Laboratory from 1962-1967, and as a
secretary in the University of Iowa College of
Business from 1977-1987.
In August 1987, they moved to Clear Lake to be
near their daughter, Nancy Plorins, and her family.
Her special interests were love of family and
friends, office work and computers. She enjoyed
keeping up a large volume of correspondence with
their many friends and relatives who are scattered
throughout the United States. She enjoyed music and
had a wonderful gift of playing the piano. She was
active in church work throughout the years of her
life.
She is survived by two children: a daughter,
Nancy Plorins, and her husband, Ziedonis (Zeke), of
Clear Lake, and their children, James Plorins and
his wife, Diana, of Ankeny, Iowa, and David Plorins
and his wife, Tracey, and their sons, Matthew and
Nicholas of Davenport, Iowa; and a son, James
Carlton, and his wife, Trudy, of Omaha, Neb. She had
a special relationship with her husband’s sisters,
Harriet Casey, Naomi Carter, Rachel Carter and Mary
Smith, and with her brother’s wife, Ann Barron.
She was preceded in death by her husband,
Lawrence; her parents; her brothers, James and Roy;
and a nephew and niece.
Russell C. Davis
Russell C. Davis, 62, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died
Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, at North Iowa Mercy Health
Center’s East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.
Memorial services were held Monday, Aug. 17, at
the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.

Russell Davis was born June 6, 1936 in Waterloo,
Iowa, the son of Mae and Alfred Davis. He graduated
from West High School in Waterloo in 1954. He
received his B.A. and M.A. from UNI and received his
doctorate while he lived in Berlin, Germany in 1981.
He was a guidance counselor in Iowa and in Berlin at
the John F. Kennedy Schule. In the middle 1960s Dr.
Davis was the Senior American Editor/Radio
Journalist for Deutsche Welle Radio located in
Cologne, Germany.
In August of 1972 he married Deanna Bentley. In
the last few years Dr. Davis had worked in several
capacities as a counsultant. He was a self-employed
family counselor. Russell wrote several books and
magazine articles. He wrote a book for policemen to
help them deal with hostage takers. He also wrote a
book about Mountain Man lore, because he loved that
part of American history.
Russell was also very involved in hypnotherapy
and became a board member and editor of the journal
for APRT (The Association for Past-Life Research and
Therapies). He was also the head of an agency that
certified Regression Therapists, IBRT.
He was a trainer for police officers at Hawkeye
Tech in Waterloo. He was the head of Midwest Law
Enforcement Consultants.
Dr. Davis was a recent resident of Clear Lake and
fell in love with the lake the instant he saw it. He
spent time sitting by the lake and enjoyed the sail
boats. He was a loving husband, dear friend, uncle
and cared very much for all people in pain.
He is survived by his wife, Dee; a sister, Zepha
Mae Turner of Springville, Iowa, and her family; his
father, Alfred Davis, Springville.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mae
Davis; and a sister Kathleen.
Winston Miles Perry
Winston Miles Perry, 57, of Scottsdale, Ariz.,
died Aug. 14, 1998. Funeral services will be held
today, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19 at Guaranty
Mortuary, Phoenix, Ariz.
He was born in Forest City, Iowa. He was a
proprietor shutter.
He is survived by his daughter, Jill Pawlak; his
son, Chadwick; three grandchildren; and his mother,
Mildred Perry.
C. Clarence Smith
C. Clarence Smith, 91, Iowa Falls, Iowa, died
Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at Skoenic Manor Nursing Home
in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 18, at
First Congregational United Church of Christ, Iowa
Falls, with the Rev. Paul Schultz officiating.
Interment was at Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Memorials can be made to the Congregational Church.
C. Clarence Smith was born Nov. 16, 1906 in rural
Alden, Iowa, the son of Charles S. and Fannie May
(Kelley) Smith. He moved to Iowa Falls in 1918.
Clarence attended and graduated from Iowa Falls High
school in 1925 and attended Ellsworth Community
College.
On June 20, 1928, he married Dorothy Bacon at
Titonka, Iowa. For 10 years he was half owner of
Scotts Grocery. For 15 years he was manager of the
Iowa Falls Creamery. Clarence worked 12 years for
the State Department of Revenue.
Clarence loved to play golf and played the sport
regularly until age 85. He was a long time member of
the Iowa Falls First Congregational U.C.C. Church,
and held every office in the church. He also served
on the school board.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, Iowa Falls;
three sons, Ron Smith and his wife, Doris of
Vancouver, Wash., David Smith and his wife, Helen,
Des Moines, Iowa, and James Smith and his wife,
Ruthe, Mason City; a sister Marguerite Wilbur of
Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and 12
great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law,
Rosemary Isebrand of Okeechobee, Fla., Shirley Neel,
Clear Lake, and Vern Bacon, Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two
brothers, Benjamin and Gilbert; and sisters and
brothers-in-law, Florence Heifner and Don Bacon.

Anthony (T.J.)
Hillburg
Anthony (T.J.) Hillburg, 19, of Thornton, Iowa,
formerly of Algona, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998 in an
automobile accident south of Ventura.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday),
Aug. 19, at 1 p.m. at the Ventura High School Gym,
Ventura, with the Rev. Daird Korth of Redeemer
Lutheran Church, Ventura, officiating. Interment
will be in Ventura Cemetery. The family suggests
memorials to the T.J. Hillburg memorial fund to help
refurbish the Ventura track.
T.J. was born July 17l, 1979 in Mason City, Iowa,
the son of Daryl Hillburg and Trudy
Duitscher-Hillburg. He attended Seton grade school,
Algona Middle School and one year at Algona High
School. In 1995 he moved and lived with grandparents
south of Ventura and continued his education at
Ventura High School, graduating in 1997. He loved
athletics and participated in football, track and
baseball. He enjoyed running the bases in baseball.
His relay team qualified for Drake Relays in 1997
and their 4x100 placed sixth and their 4x200 placed
fourth at state.
T.J. could make friends easily, loved people and
always had a smile. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and
bike riding with his father. He was an avid Packer
fan.
He is survived by his father, Daryl Hillburg,
Algona; his mother, Trudy Duitscher-Hillburg,
Algona; a brother, Adam Hillburg, Algona; maternal
grandparents, Arnold and Madelyn Duitscher,

Waddington
Donald Eugene Waddington, 62, of rural
Hanlontown, Iowa, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998 at
the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 25 at
the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church in Forest City, Iowa,
with the Rev. Robert Snitzer and Rev. Orville
Walters officiating. Burial was in the Brush Point
Cemetery, rural Hanlontown, with military graveside
honors by the Edward Tosel American Legion Post
#110, Manly, Iowa.
Donald Eugene Waddington was born on Oct. 23,
1935, in Belmond, Iowa, the son of George and
Elizabeth (Gabrielson) Waddington. He attended and
received his education in the Belmond community
school system. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on
Jan. 27, 1955, serving with HQ Company 2nd Bn., 30th
Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict and was
honorably discharged on Jan. 25, 1957. He was united
in marriage to Betty Tuttle on July 13, 1958, at the
Fertile Church of Christ. After their marriage
together they farmed in the Fertile, Sheffield and
Thornton, Iowa, areas For the past 26 years they
farmed west of Hanlontown, and enjoyed raising his
Brush Point Belgian draft horses. Donald also was an
auctioneer for the S&W Auction Company and also
drove truck for several trucking firms.
Don loved the Lord, was a devoted husband,
father, and grandfather, and also enjoyed children
and raising his draft horses. Meeting and talking
with people was a favorite past time.
He was an active member of the Pilot Knob
Lutheran Church and was head usher at the church for
several years.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Waddington of
rural Hanlontown; his mother, Elizabeth Waddington
of Belmond; three children, Penny Miller and her
husband, Dan, of Fertile, Iowa, Tammy Waddington of
Clear Lake, and Bruce Waddington of Fertile; four
grandchildren, Heather Schulze and her husband,
Joshua, of Clear Lake, Joshua Miller of Fertile,
Jordan Bakkum of Fertile, and Kandice Waddington of
Fertile; two sisters, Carol Ann Williams and her
husband, Larry, of Ackley, Iowa, and Mary Jane
Charlton and her husband, Norman of Albion, Iowa;
two brothers-in-law, Robert Tuttle of Mason City,
and Merle Tuttle of Clear Lake; as well as many
nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, George
Waddington.
Organist Deanna Jordan accompanied soloists Linda
Tuttle and Carol Ann Williams.
Honorary pallbearers were John Van Maanen, Lloyd
Bloom, Severin Severson, Raymond Jordan, Norman
Nyhus, Russ Vander Weerdt, Wayne Bang, Don Sunne,
Otto Anderson, Harold Nyhus, and other members of
his prayer group.
Pallbearers were Tom Renchin, Andy Oswald, Wally
Mayland, Pat Renchin, Randy Osward, Russell Hein.
Maurice E. Buckley
Mr. Maurice E. Buckley, 69, of Ventura, Iowa,
died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998 at St. Mary’s Hospital,
Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 25, at
St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, Iowa, with
the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Interment was in
the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. Military honors
were performed by the Clear Lake VFW.
Maurice was born June 2, 1929 in Britt, Iowa, the
son of Raymond and Meta (Klinge) Buckley. After
graduating from Klemme High School in 1947 he farmed
on the family farm until entering the Army during
the Korean Conflict.
Maurice married Donna Dempsey Boller on April 26,
1952 in Belmond, Iowa. He farmed in the Belmond and
Klemme, Iowa, area until 1966. He then started
working for Iowa Mold and Tool in Garner, Iowa until
1968. From 1968-80 he was employed at Winnebago
Industries in Forest City, Iowa. In 1979 they moved
into their present home in Ventura. He started
working for the Ventura School system in 1980 as a
bus driver and mechanic. He continued driving bus up
to the time of his death. He enjoyed driving for all
activities and especially liked being around the
kids. He loved his family and friends very much.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church,
Mason City, Clear Lake VFW, the American Legion, and
the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Buckley,
Ventura; six children, Gary Boller and his wife,
Loretta, Blanchard Okla., Mary Meier and her friend,
Jay Michael, Littleton, Colo., Mark E. Buckley and
his wife, Connie, Berthoud, Colo., Jane Reysack,
Clear Lake, William R. Buckley and his wife,
Charlie, Loveland, Colo., and Nancy Stadler and her
husband, Leo, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; 11
grandchildren, Troy Gray, Joanna Southard, Tracy
Gray, Joshua Boller, Tony Reysack, Jamie Boller,
Kelli Buckley, Derick Stadler, Gabriel Buckley,
Peyton Stadler and Josephine Buckley; one brother,
Elmer Buckley and his wife, Marion, Garner, Iowa;
and two sisters, Ella Marie Ridder and her husband,
Jim, Garner, and Margaret McLaughlin and her
husband, Tony, Kensett.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one
great-grandson, Tanner Southard; and one brother,
Leonard Buckley.
Organist Nancy Mennen accompanied soloist Tracy
Gray.
Honorary pallbearers were William Chizek, Patrick
Stork, Gary Schichtl, Henry Bokelman, Jerry Dempsey,
Delwyn Stromer, Chuck Bredlow, Merle Janssen, and
Paul Hartwell.

Tracy Gray, Joshua Boller, Tony Reysack, Jamie
Boller, Kelli Buckley, Derick Stadler, Gabriel

Donna H. Duncan
Donna H. Duncan, 91, Mason City, Iowa, died
Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998 at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Memorial services were held Monday, Aug. 24 at
the First Presbyterian Church. Interment was at the
Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.
Donna Duncan was born July 15, 1907 in Greeley,
Iowa, the daughter of W. Arthur and Oral C. (Lillibridge)
Hindal.
Kay Elizabeth Sutton
Kay Elizabeth Sutton, 56, of Clear Lake, died
Monday, Aug. 24, 1998 at her home in Clear Lake.
Private graveside services will take place at a
later date in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
arrangements.
Kay Elizabeth Sutton was born on April 7, 1942,
in Mason City, the daughter of Lyle Ray Sutton and
Elizabeth Pearl Thurtle.
She is survived by her mother, Elizabeth Thurtle,
Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her father.
