MARK HAUGEN
August 24, 1957 - December 22, 2013

Mark D.  HaugenMark D. Haugen, 56, of Clear Lake, died Sunday Dec. 22, 2013 at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City. Do to his wishes, he was cremated. Celebration of his life will be held at later time.

Mark was born Aug. 24, 1957 in Mason City, the son of Dale and Darlene (Dodd) Haugen. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1975.

He married Patty Lenz and to this union they had two sons, Josh and Jake. In 1988 he married Shari Brower and to this union had a daughter Shana Haugen.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, card games and tinkering with motorcycles. If you were lucky enough to have met Mark, you would never forget him.

Mark is survived by his three children, Joshua Haugen, Fairbanks, Alaska, Jacob Haugen, Geneva, Iowa, and Shana Haugen, Clear Lake; grandchildren, Cheyenne, Sky and Cole Haugen; stepfather, Robert Butner, Clear Lake; brother, Michael Haugen, Clear Lake; and a sister, Alice Bramley, Clear Lake.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, uncles and aunts.

KEITH HAUGEN
August 24, 1957 - December 22, 2013

KKeith E. Haugeneith Earl Haugen, 74, of 217 Asbury Drive, Clear Lake, passed away from natural causes on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at home.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and no services will be held.

Keith was born May 20, 1939 in Fertile, Iowa, the son of Wallace and Idelle (Garlock) Haugen. He graduated from Clear Lake High School.

Following high school, Keith enlisted in the Navy. After he was honorably discharged, he worked on an oil platform in Alaska. He then sold motor homes for a short time.
Keith then worked at the Clear Lake Bakery for many years. After that, he worked for a locating service as a utilities locator until his retirement.

Keith married Cathy (Carrington) on New Year’s Eve 1994. They renewed their vows on March 2, 2012.

Keith enjoyed spending time with and cooking for his grandchildren. He enjoyed his frequent trips to the Village Store and any grocery store where he could find a bargain. He loved playing golf and was a member of the Veterans Memorial Golf Club. Keith also spent his
time refinishing furniture or working on his motor home, in which he had plans to travel next summer. His cats also held a special place in his heart.

Keith is survived by his children, Todd Haugen, Las Vegas, Nev., Traci and Sabrina Haugen; step-children, Travis (Theresa) Glidden, Garner, Iowa, Matt Glidden (fiancee Ally Monson), Clear Lake, and Mark (Lisa) Glidden, Clear Lake; grandchildren, Cody, Autumn, Tristin and Ty Glidden of Garner, Cassie and Callie Glidden, Clear Lake, Alec Glidden, Ames, Iowa, Shae Glidden, Mason City, and Rhys Glidden, Clear Lake; Sage, Ian, Cole, and
Sheridan (Dani), and Beau Haugen; great-grandchild, Jackson Glidden, Mason City; and brother, Myron (Pat) Haugen, Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy; parents; daughter, Selena Haugen; brothers, DuWayne, Mark, and Dale Haugen; and sister, Deloris Haugen.

CHARLES TIFFT
December 2, 1926 - December 23, 2013

Charles S. Tifft, 87, of Greene, IA, formerly of Clear Lake, IA, died Monday, December 23, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th Street, Clear Lake, with Rev. Kirk Wilkie officiating. Inurnment will take place at the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, IA at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Charles Tifft memorial fund in care of the family.

Charles was born December 2, 1926, in Clear Lake, IA, the son of Hannah (Thompson) and Charles S. Tifft Sr. He attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Clear Lake high school in 1944. He loved growing up in Clear Lake. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1953. Charles married Imogene "Ileen" Burns on April 9, 1950, in Rockford, IA. He worked at Armours Meat Packing Plant, formerly Deckers, for 33 years before his retirement at age 58. Charles loved traveling – making many trips to Europe, Alaska, and throughout the US – he especially enjoyed the annual Alaska Army Reunion. Charles was able to visit all but 4 states. He enjoyed spending time with his family & friends, listening to Big Band music, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeye's. Charles was a lifetime member the Moose Lodge.

Charles is survived by his wife of 63 years: Ileen Tifft of Greene, IA; five children: Bill Tifft and wife Mary of Omaha, NE, Linda McCoole and husband David of Jacksonville, NC, Donna Ponto and husband Mark of Greene, IA, Dennis Tifft and partner Steve of Minneapolis, MN, and Larry Tifft and partner John of Minneapolis; 7 grandchildren: Michael, Renee, Zeke, Shelley, Mandy, Shiloh, and Shanna; 5 great grandchildren: Cooper, Megan, Chloe, Emma and Clara.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son: Dean Tifft; and a sister in infancy.

OSCAR DAVIS
February 6, 1924 - December 30, 2013

Oscar DavisThurman “Oscar” Davis, 89, Clear Lake, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013 at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 10, 2014 at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave. N., Clear Lake, with Rev. Bernie Colorado officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 9, from 4 - 7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Marine Corp. Honor Guard. According to his wishes, his body has been cremated. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery, Swaledale, Iowa, at a later date. Memorials may be left to Hospice of North Iowa or the Clear Lake United Methodist Church. Please no flowers or plants.

Oscar was born Feb. 6, 1924 in Carpenter, Iowa, the son of Thurman Allen
and Verna Iva (Jones) Davis. He graduated from Swaledale High School in 1941. Oscar married Maxine Oehlert June 2, 1941 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Oscar enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1943 and served in the Pacific during WWII. Following an honorable discharge, he returned to Clear Lake and “tried farming, didn’t work!”

He did work in sales in the farming industry selling seed corn and fertilizer. Oscar would say he was the happiest when working! Winter times saw him moving snow and other seasons he did dirt work. He loved being with people.

Oscar loved to do hog roasts and he did many. He enjoyed
entertaining. You could always hear him say, “What ever is fair.” He went fishing up north for many years. Oscar gave away $2 bills for tips and to little kids.

Oscar is survived by his children, Darlene Porter, and her husband, Budd, Apple Valley, Calif., Linda Smeby, Clear Lake, Ronald Davis and his wife, Russalyn “Rusty,” Hanlontown, Iowa, and Rosann Fredin, and her husband, Jerry, Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren, Craig Davis, Terry Smeby, Todd (Tracy) Smeby, Troy Smeby, Jeremy (Kellie) Fredin and Jaynann (Ryan) Donker; great grandchildren, Ashley Smeby, Brielle Smeby, Morgan Davis, Ava Davis, Trevor Davis, Jordan Smeby, Collin Smeby and Amber Donker, Cayden Donker, Liam Fredin and Nora Fredin.

Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine. (Feb. 2, 2000); six brothers, Gerald, Thomas, Eugene, Burl, Lawrence Stepletons and Ray Davis; sister, Verna Oehlert; brother-in-law, Howard Oehlert; son-in-law, Byron Smeby; and grandsons, Christopher Catania, and Chad Davis.

PRISCILLA WALLACE
November 9, 1952 - January 2, 2014

Priscilla  Ann WallacePriscilla Ann Wallace (Maise), 61, of Mason City, formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel with Rev. Arthur Zewert officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will take
place on a later date.

Priscilla Ann Wallace, the daughter of John and Shirley (Anderson) Wallace, was born Nov. 9, 1952 in Mason City. She attended and graduated from Clear Lake High School.

After high school, she worked for Opportunity
Village as cottage staff. She also became a certified medical aide.

Priscilla was married to John Siesseger. Together they had a daughter. Later she found Richard Maise, and she was by his side for 29 years.

Priscilla loved caring for people, being with her granddaughter, and loved Harley Davidson Motorcycles. She was a friendly person with a heart of gold. Priscilla was a good baker and was known for her cookies.

Priscilla is survived by her husband, Richard Maise; daughter, Heather (Brad) Siesseger; granddaughter, Tana Dean; mother, Shirley Wallace; sisters, Margaret Bagur, and Patricia (John) Abele; two nieces and two nephews, as well as some great-nieces and nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Wallace.

ROGER RUHS
October 29, 1952 - December 28, 2013

Roger D. RuhsRoger D. Ruhs, 61, 113 S. 9th St., Clear Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. Memorials may be given to the Roger D. Ruhs Memorial Fund.

Roger was born Oct. 29, 1952, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Talleta “Tillie” (Appledorn) Ruhs. He grew up playing little league fast pitch softball and pony league fast pitch in Basco, Ill. Roger did not play baseball
until high school in Warsaw, Ill., where he graduated in 1971. After playing baseball and basketball at Keokuk Community College, Roger moved to the Des Moines area and was immediately picked up with the Bondurant town
softball team. He then played with the Des Moines Jets and moved on to play with Jerry Sands and Moe Eubanks on the C&P Vending team.

In 1975, Roger got a call from Bill Peters asking him to join the Bombers and to learn to play first base. Roger made a smooth transition to first base, and held it down until he and Tom Stokesbary traded positions and he
remained a top fielding shortstop for the rest of his career.

Roger moved to Clear Lake in 1980 to work for the Clear Lake Bakery and play for the Clear Lake Butt'r Top softball team. Roger played on two state championship teams in his three years with Clear Lake Butt'r Top team. Butt'r Top and Modern Piping merged to form the Iowans, and Roger played for the team one season. Roger finished his career playing for the Mankato Happy Chef team. After the 1985 season, Roger decided it was time to call it quits while he was still on top of his game. In all, his career included six state or regional championship teams.

Roger batted over .300 every year of his career and a high of .367 in 1983. As a left handed hitter, Roger used his speed to get on base, yet he still managed to have a season with 11 home runs.

Roger married Sheryl “Sherri” Weber on Sept. 28, 2002, in Clear Lake.

Besides softball and bowling in his younger years, Roger enjoyed playing golf with the Sunday Funday Group where you were never quite sure of what was going to happen. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He and Sherri hosted many Hawkeye parties and their annual
Frog Leg Fry. Roger was also very fond of his dogs.

Whether playing softball in the yard or reading stories, Roger loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
 
Roger is survived by his wife, Sherri Ruhs, Clear Lake; mother-in-law, Kira Weber, Osage, Iowa; step-children, Jacqlyn (Bill) Ferjak, Eden Prairie, Minn., Jennifer (Tom) Faber, Clear Lake, and Jessica (Pete) Cash, Ventura; grandchildren, Kennidy and Andrew Faber and Lorelei and James Cash; brothers, Larry (Vicki) Ruhs, Quincy, Ill., and Ronnie Ruhs, Rockport, Texas;
brother and sister’s-in-law, Donna and David Hanna, Owatonna, Minn., Kenneth and Patty Weber, Manly, Iowa, Diann and Michael Butters, Lincoln, Neb., Darrell and Carol Weber, Osage, and Theresa and Brian Farmer,
Charles City, Iowa, Bert Miller, Bushnell, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, JoAnne Ruhs and Karen Miller; sister-in-law, Debbie Ruhs; father-in-law, Robert Weber; and niece, Dawn Hanna.

THELMA "GRACE" HESTON
February 26, 1918 - December 29, 2013

Thelma Grace HestonThelma “Grace” Heston, 95, Clear Lake, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral was held on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with Rev. Kirk Wilkie officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Family suggests memorials to Thelma Grace Heston memorial fund in care of Dr. Michael Heston, 1411 4th St. S.W., Mason City, Iowa 50401.

Grace was born Feb. 26, 1918 at the family home in Abingdon, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Lora (Schooley) Ireland. She graduated from Fairfield High School and AIB (American Institute of Business). Grace married Robert
Heston on Jan. 13, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in Sumner, Iowa, Clear Lake, Princeton, Ill., Mason City, and Iowa Falls, Iowa, before retiring back to Clear Lake.

Grace was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed her bridge groups, watching birds, word games, puzzles, cooking, baking, traveling, family gatherings and the family fishing trips to Canada.

Grace is survived by her children, Dr. R. Michael Heston, Mason City, Rose Anne Wallace, Durham, N.C., Kathleen Henriksen, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Dr. James Heston and his wife, Laurie, Homer, Alaska; grandchildren, Sue
Heston, Merriam, Kan., Dr. Pam O’Connor and her husband, Terence, The Woodlands, Texas, Steven Heston, Britt, Iowa, and David Ballard Heston, Anchorage, Alaska; great-grandchildren, Katie and John O’Connor; and nieces and nephews.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert (May 29, 1996); sister, Bernice Turner; and brother, Floyd “Bub” Ireland.

GEORGE WENDEL
March 30, 1927 - January 1, 2014

George Harold Wendel, 86, of Mason City, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 at Major Erickson Funeral Home with Chaplain Rev. Father Jerome Baker officiating. Interment was at Memorial Park
Cemetery. Military Honors were conducted by the Mason City Veterans Association. Memorials may be directed to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), 1603 S. Monroe Ave., Mason City, Iowa 50401. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.majorericksonfuneralhome.com.

George was born March 30, 1927 in Mason City, the son of Harold Leroy (H.L.) and Liola Mary (Kilfoil) Wendel. He attended Mason City public schools. At age 18, George was drafted into the U.S.A.F. during WWII as an Airline and Engine Mechanic and served his country while stationed in
Munich, Germany, until his honorable discharge on Jan. 28, 1947.

George married Jeannine DeVoIa Lucken on Aug. 21, 1949, in Kensett, Iowa. Together they farmed for many years (Wendel Grain & Cattle Farm). George started farming in 1950 and rented property and a home from Alex Wohler. In 1958, George and Jeannine bought their first land and moved their family to the existing home site, which was located northwest of Mason City near his father's homestead. George lived at this farm site for
approximately 60 years until he needed assistive and long-term care and resided in Mason City, Willow Pointe, and Good Shepherd Nursing Home. George had several secondary jobs to help sustain the farm operation
including the following: Mason City Brick & Tile, Weavers Readi Mix and snow removal for the Willowbrook area.

George is survived by three daughters, Tanya Wendel, and husband, Thomas Norris, of Indian Wells, Calif., Kimberly Wendel, of Clear Lake, and Valerie Wendel-Filkins and husband, Lyle Filkins, of Omaha, Neb.; four sisters, Lila Perry, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary Ann Wendel-Baker and husband, Rev. Jerome Baker, of Mason City, Loyola "Sherry" Bohnsack and friend, Roy Myers, of Mason City, Paula Chambers and husband, John, of Waterloo, Iowa; two brothers, Tom Wendel, of Clear Lake, and Harold Wendel, and wife, Doris, of Mason City; and two sisters-in-law, Della Wendel, of Charles City, and Iris Wendel, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2012; three brothers, Howard, Clifford and Gerald Wendel; one sister, Juanita May Johnson; sister-in-law, Sharon Wendel; and brother-in-law, Vernon Perry.

DENNIS HENNINGSEN
January 16, 1937 - January 5, 2014

Dennis Neary HenningsenDennis N. Henningsen, 76 of Clear Lake, passed this life on Sunday (January 5, 2014) at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A Celebration of Denny’s life will be held on his seventy-seventh birthday, Thursday (January 16, 2014) from 4 to 7 pm at the Mason City Country Club, 3331 19th St SW, Mason City, where a time of reflection and sharing will begin at 5:30 pm. Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place. Denny gave the gift of research through tissue donation to the Mayo Clinic.

Dennis Neary Henningsen was born January 16, 1937 at Atlantic, Iowa, to Einer and Helen (Neary) Henningsen. He graduated from Atlantic High School in 1955 and attended and graduated from the University of Iowa where he was a member of ROTC and the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

He was united in marriage to Linda Halsey on February 23, 1973 at Reno, Nevada. To this union, he felt the greatest joy in the arrival of his two sons, Christian and Nicholas.

Denny owned and operated Henningsen Construction in Mason City for 26 years. He constructed many commercial and industrial buildings in North Iowa and Southern Minnesota. His interests changed and his passion for real estate and development led him to join Edwards-Brandt and Associates. There he helped bring many of the businesses that are now on the West side of Mason City. He also served on several boards around North Iowa.

Denny loved life. In his younger years he thoroughly enjoyed racing cars, especially his Shelby Cobra, around the Midwest. He always had an obsession with cars even though he had no mechanical skills. He very much loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, skiing, and backpacking. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and would either attend football games with his wife and sons, or watch it on TV with a black Lab at his feet.

His life was centered on his family. He very much looked forward to events that would bring them together, especially holidays. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and boys, whether it was a couples trip to Hawaii or Paris or a boy’s only trip to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. In retirement, he and Linda felt fortunate to spend some time in Florida during the winters. His time on Anna Maria Island included golf, walking on the beach and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, Clear Lake; two sons, Chris (Jenny) Henningsen, Iowa City, Nick (Beth) Henningsen, Clear Lake; granddaughters, Aubrey and Rilynn, Clear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Einer and Helen, a brother, Tom Henningsen, and sister in-law, Jody Henningsen.

LESTER G. HEITLAND
January 4, 1926 - January 8, 2014

Lester Gene "Les" Heitland, 88, of Mason City, died Jan. 8, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014 at Epiphany Parish - St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Rodney Allers as Celebrant.

Burial immediately followed in the Clear Lake Cemetery where military honors were provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Memorials may be left in Les' honor to the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Lester Gene Heitland was born on Jan. 4, 1926 in Clear Lake, the son of Ed and Carrie (Buss) Heitland. Les attended country schools, graduated from Clear Lake High School, and attended Mason City Junior College.

He enlisted in the Naval Air Corps in 1943 in Ottumwa, Iowa, and transferred to the Navy because pilots were not needed. During WWII he was a fire control personnel, directing outgoing gunfire on the USS Detroit and
later on the USS New Kent. He served in the Pacific theater and Asian theater in 1945-46 and saw action in the Battle of Iwo Jima and Battle of Okinawa. His ship was docked next to the USS Missouri for the signing of the peace treaty with Japan. Les attained a rank of Fire Control 3rd Class and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Les married Alberta Hickey on June 20, 1949. They shared many hours of golfing and traveling together. Their favorite Minnesota fishing spots were Round Lake, Cut Foot Sioux Lake, and Winnibigosh Lake. Time spent at their cabin on Little Cut Foot Sioux Lake with family and friends was special.

He began his career with Northwestern Bell Telephone in 1947; retiring in 1984. He held numerous positions in the company beginning as a lineman. He transferred from Clear Lake to Northwood and then to Mason City during which time he worked in the warehouse, as a service man in
central equipment, and as a business customer representative.

Les owned and operated Heitland Stump Removal from 1950-1990, grinding up stumps in Iowa and southern Minnesota. Les and Alberta delivered Winnebago Motor Homes for Morgan Drive Away delivering in California, Oregon, New England states, and Florida. He made 18 deliveries
to Alaska. From 1988 until about 2005 he drove pilot cars for oversized loads.

He proudly participated in the Winnebago Honor Flight of 2008. Les was also a member of the Moose, Elks, The Telephone Pioneers, Clear Lake V.F.W., AMVETS, Knights of Columbus, and the Communication Workers of America Union.

Surviving Les are his children, Janis, and husband, William Garrard, Doris Perau, Bonnie, and husband, Gary Farman, Gregory, and Glen; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Roger "Bud" and wife,
MaDonna Heitland; sisters-in-law, Billie and husband, Terril Weydert, and Renee and husband, Don Babbitt; brother-in-law, Ed Callanan; aunt, Dorothy Buss; and good friend, Denny Haaland.

Preceding him in death are his wife, Alberta in 2001; daughter, Constance in 1951; great-grandson, Thaddeus Garrard; parents, Ed and Carrie Heitland; in-laws, Leo and Agnes Hickey; sister, Ardis Callanan; infant brother, Virgil; and brothers-in-law, Maurice and Robert Hickey.

Rodney D. Hanson, 66, 1120 N. 5th St., Clear Lake, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa, Mason City.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Inurnment will be at a later time at Rock Grove Cemetery, Nora Springs, Iowa. Family suggest memorials to Rodney D. Hanson Memorial Fund.

Rodney was born July 1, 1947 in Mason City, the son of Helmer and Iva (Fuston) Hanson. He attended Clear Lake High School. He enlisted in the United State Navy and served on the USS Ticonderoga during the Vietnam
Conflict. He married Pat Cree May 7, 1969.

He was a member of Local 234 and worked as a heavy equipment operator and worked thru out Iowa. He retired in 2006 due to health issues. He enjoyed spending his time outdoors fishing, bow hunting, and shooting guns with his good friend, Mike Cookman. He also enjoyed darts
and playing foosball and helped organize tournaments in the area. He especially enjoyed attending his daughter’s basketball games.

Rodney is survived by his wife, Pat Hanson, Clear Lake; daughter, Shannon Hanson, and her fiancé, Dave Jackson, Clear Lake; sisters, Maxine (Bill) Worsley, Clear Lake, and Laurel O’Rourke, Maryville, Mo.; brother-in-
law, Donnie (Bernice) Cree, White Oaks, Calif.; sister-in-law, Jeanne Cree, Clinton, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents; three brothers, Gary, Curtis and Roger Hanson; two sisters, June Johnson and Sylvia Paine Burkheimer; brother-in-laws, Donald Johnson, Clem O’Rourke and Max Cree; and sister-
in-laws, Dixie Schaer and Shirley Tanner.

February 16, 1948 - January 3, 2014

David Edwin Erickson, 65, Circle Pines, Minn., died Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 at Golden Living Center, Fridley, Minn.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 at the Mueller-Bies Funeral Home in Roseville, Minn., with the Rev. Bob Burmeister officiating. Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn., with military honors conducted.

David was born Feb. 16, 1948 in West Union, Iowa, the son of Edwin J. and Betty C.(Harvey) Erickson. He attended school there until the family moved to Clear Lake, Iowa in 1959. David was a 1966 graduate of Clear Lake High School. After graduating, he attended the University of Iowa before serving as a medic in the Army in the Vietnam War.

David and Beverly(Maynard) were married in 1974 and they had two sons, Daniel and Drew. They later divorced and David and Marge(Shilson) were married in 2007.

David had various jobs throughout his lifetime. However, he found his perfect fit as a Para at Crossroads School in Minnestoar, working with the behavioral and mentally challenged children. He was there until August 2012 when he was diagnosed with ALS.

David is survived by his sons, Daniel, Arden Hills, Minn., and Drew, Champlin, Minn.; step-son, Jay Shilson, Circle Pines, Minn.; two sisters, Barbara Hefty, Carrollton, Ga., and Marsha (Jerry) Bezely, Clear Lake; and a brother, Dr. Steven C. (Krista) Erickson, Saginaw, Mich.; and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janelle, at birth; wife, Marge, in 2010; and his parents.

JEAN R. LARSON
April 21, 1930 - January 11, 2014

Jean R. Larson, of 4266 S. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 in the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa, Mason City. Private family interment services were held Jan. 14 at Riverside
Cemetery, Marshalltown, Iowa, where Jean attended school, married and raised her family.

Born April 21, 1930 in Butler County, Iowa, Jean Rowley moved to Marshalltown at an early age where she was educated in the Marshalltown public school system.

She enjoyed playing piano and organ at church as a
substitute. On June 10, 1950 she was united in marriage to James R. Larson in the United Methodist Church of Marshalltown. She and her husband had four children. Jean dedicated her life to her family as a homemaker, but she still found time to be an active member of the Marshalltown Jaycettes, Marshalltown Assistance League, Marshalltown Rotary Ann's, Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary, as well as, delivering “meals on wheels” and other volunteer activities as a resident of Marshalltown, Ames
and Clear Lake.

Jean enjoyed working outside in her garden with her
flowers. She was also an avid reader. Through the years she supported her children and husband in their diverse activities and organizations.

She is survived by her husband, James R. Larson; two sons and their wives, Jami (Teresa) Larson, of Ames, Iowa, and Todd (Becky) Larson , of Clear Lake; and two daughters, Kimberli Kelly, of Clear Lake, and Lori (Roger)Hamblin, of Ames; sister, Alice Pentz, of Marshalltown; nine
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Keith and Neva Rowley.

Memorials might be given in Jean R. Larson's name to the Hospice Of North Iowa Center, The Clear Lake Arts Center or Opportunity Village.

PATRICIA SCHERF-SMITH
October 30, 1930 - January 12, 2014

Patricia Scherf-Smith, 83, Urbandale, Iowa, long-time family resident of Clear Lake and the Ventura area, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at the Deerfield Village in Urbandale.

A graveside inurnment service for Patricia was held on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at the Clear Lake Cemetery, with Pastor Bernie Colorado officiating.

Patricia’s family would like to suggest that in lieu of flowers, donations to Unity Point Hospice of Des Moines or the Souvenir Building Collectors Society be made in Patricia’s memory. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Patricia Scherf-Smith was born on Oct. 30, 1930, the daughter of Earl R. and Laura R. (Swenson) Scherf in Canton, S. D. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/Journalism from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, in 1952.

She was united in marriage to Carlton Smith in Chicago, Ill., in 1965. Carlton preceded her in death on March 9, 1981.

Patricia was a reporter for the Marshalltown Times-Reporter from 1952 until 1954; she then moved to Chicago in 1954-1955, where she was public relations assistant for the Rock River Conference; at a Methodist Church from
1955-1959; news release editor for the American Medical Association; and from 1959-1963 was press relations specialist for the American Hospital Association. From 1963 until 1965, she was the public relations director for the American Academy of Pediatrics before moving to New York. In both cities she worked for national non-profit organizations, among them the American Medical Association, American Hospital Association and American
Society of Mechanical Engineers. Patricia was responsible for national television and radio promotional campaigns, production of feature films, TV spots and a few features. She administered publications as a division within
the department. The program ranged from full-length books to research reports, pamphlets, and newsletters, with about 150 titles in print. Patricia exercised editorial judgment and selection, and supervised writing, copy
editing, production and distribution of all publications.

She served as executive editor of the field’s leading monthly professional journal, grant procurement for audio-visual training materials, and supervised a professional library of 35,000 volumes, the Helen Keller Archives and the Foundation’s Record Center.

Her professional affiliations were Phi Beta Kappa from Cornell College, PRSA accredited member, Women Executives in Public relations, president-elect from 1984-1985, National Association of Science Writers, and Women in
Communications, Inc. She was an avid collector of miniature souvenir buildings and houses, and a lifelong member of the Souvenir Building Collectors Society.

Those left to cherish her memory are her brother, Larry J. Scherf (Carolyn); niece, Teresa (Craig) Hill, all of Clarinda, Iowa; nephews, Steven (Heidi) Scherf, of Grinnell, Iowa, and Douglas Scherf of St. Paul, Minn.;
grandnephews, Tyler (Brittany) Hill, Casey Hill and fiancé, Megan Kearney, and Lucas Scherf; great-grandniece, Emma Hill, all of Clarinda, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

FRANK J. HEJNA, JR.
June 6, 1937 - January 14, 2014

Frank J. Hejna, Jr., 76, of Barnett, Mo., formerly of Ventura, but had been living with his daughter in Hickman, Neb., peacefully joined our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014 at Homestead Rehabilitation
Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan, Iowa, with Fr. Dennis Miller officiating. Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek, who accompanied cantor, Louise Zrostlik. Casket bearers were Alan Hejna, Mike Hejna, Scott Hejna, Eric Hejna, Chad Hejna, Joe Hejna, Bob Hejna and Dan Burger. Burial was at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Frank was born in Mason City to Frank and Agnes (Korn) Hejna on June 6, 1937. He was baptized on June 20, 1937 and confirmed in 1948 at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church at Duncan. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1955. After high school, Frank served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955-1961. While living in Leigh, Neb., he owned Frank’s Auto and was an active member of the community, including serving on the
Leigh Fire and Rescue squad. After a back injury left him unable to work on vehicles, he attended college in Curtis, Neb., earning a degree in 1979 in Natural Resources and Conservation. This gave him the opportunity to combine his love of the outdoors and a long career of surveying and conservation. He worked for the NRD of York, Neb., from 1979-1987, and was
a volunteer firefighter. From there he worked as a contract supervisor for the Missouri Conservation Department until retirement in 2010.

Frank was a member of the Knights of Columbus at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eldon, Mo. He enjoyed polka music, fishing, working on tractors, restoring classic automobiles, and socializing.

Frank is survived by his wife, Jean, of Lincoln; children, Frank III, of Hump Tulips, Wash., Preston, of Hoquiam, Wash., Shelli Ziemke, and husband, Mike, of Hickman, Sherri Leyva, and husband, Gilbert, of Las
Vegas, Nev., and Sunni Harper, and husband, Colby, of Hickman; grandchildren, Tori and Sydni Ziemke, Evan, Emma, Sammy, and Charley Leyva, Delaini and Presli Harper; as well as, three adored brothers, Jerry
(JoAnn) Hejna, of Ventura, Ron (Rose) Hejna, of Garner, Iowa, and Ed (Connie) Hejna, of Floyd, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Joseph; and sons, Vincent and Shawn Hejna.

Audrey Maxine SpilmanAudrey M. Spilman, 95, Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake. According to her wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. A private family inurnment will take place at the Clear Lake Cemetery later.

Audrey Maxine was born Nov. 27, 1918 in Nora Springs, Iowa, the daughter of James Fenton and Viola Elsie (Benson) Rhodes. She lived and attended school in rural Hanlontown, Iowa, Lincoln Township # 2 Cerro Gordo
County School. After moving to rural Mason City, she commuted by railroad to Hanlontown thru 10th grade. She graduated from Mason City High School where she spent her junior and senior years.

Audrey married Dale Sidney Spilman on June 8, 1939. They lived on a farm in rural Clear Lake, and then in 1947 they moved to a farm in rural Thornton. In 2004 Audrey moved to her Clear Lake condominium.

Audrey’s “favorites” include Big Band music at the Surf Ballroom, watching and recording “The Lawrence Welk Show” on Saturday night, riding her horse, Buster, going to the cinema, attending plays and concerts, reading, walks on the farm and along the lake, keeping up with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, traveling (she traveled 25 states, Canada, and Mexico, but especially loved seeing the Branson, Mo., shows) and watching "Regis" during breakfast. She was most fond of caring for her family and having coffee and treats with her friends.

Audrey was admired for her curious mind, kind heart, positive attitude and independent spirit, and loved by all who knew her. She enjoyed studying the scriptures with Bob, Jean and Sue Wilson.

Audrey is survived by five children, David James Spilman, Clear Lake, Donita Jeanne Spilman, Clear Lake, Dale Wayne Spilman, Mason City, Virginia Viola (Dan) Suby, Westgate, Iowa, and Cynthia Audrene Spilman, Mason City; grandson, Christopher Suby, Marshalltown, Iowa; four granddaughters, Holliday (Steve) Miller, Waterloo, Iowa, Wendy Honken, Mason City, Mary Ann (Tony) Behrens, Forest City, Iowa, and Betsy (Jesse) Tibodeau, Nevada, Iowa; 10 great-grandchildren, Kole McKenzie, Alexandra Joy, Taylor Morgan, Izaak Storm, Ashley Elizabeth, Nicole Rae, Corey Allen, Colton Chase, Caitlyn Elizabeth, and Melissa Ann; and one great-great-grandchild, Jayden Scott Walker; half-sister, Jean Jacobson, Littleton, Colo.; step-mother, Ruth Rhodes, Fertile, Iowa: sisters-in-law, Betty Thomas and Phyllis Till-Spilman, Clear Lake; and brother-in-law, Danny Spilman, Rockwell, Iowa; lifelong friend, Paulina Loehndorf, Aitkin, Minn.; and special friends,

July 1, 1923 - January 17, 2014

James Robert  LawJames “Bob” Robert Law, 90, 9643 315th St., Clear Lake, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A memorial service was held at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, on Monday, Jan, 20, 2014 with Reverend Bernie Colorado officiating and with Pastor Randy Vaage participating. Following visitation his body was cremated. Military honors were provided by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Inurnment will be at Lincoln Township Cemetery, Hanlontown, Iowa. Memorials may be given in memory of James R. Law.

Bob was born July 1, 1923 in Mason City, the son of James Garfield and Vera (Vawter) Law. He attended country school and Hanlontown High School. Following high school, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater.

Bob married Ruth Stokesbary on Sept. 9, 1950 in Garner, Iowa. The couple enjoyed 63 years together.

After the service, he came home to farm. Bob was a lifelong farmer. He farmed the Century Farm his grandfather homesteaded in 1863. In 2013, the farm was recognized as a 150 Year Heritage Farm Award.

Family was important to him and he loved having his children and families live close to him. Bob retired from farming in 1985. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger days and enjoyed having his private plane pilot license.

Bob loved music. He said it was his therapy to play the guitar with the dance bands, Hal’s Ramblers and Char’s Band. Many North Iowan’s enjoyed their music in dance halls, the Fourth of July parades, and later at assisted
living and nursing homes. He played for 50 years, with his last performance being Dec. 24, 2013. He learned early to play by ear.

Bob was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, VFW Post 733, Mason City, and was a Lincoln Township Trustee.

Bob is survived by his wife, Ruth Law, Clear Lake; son, Randy (Leslie) Law, Clear Lake; daughter, Patti (Denny) Baker, Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Zachary (Dominique) Law, Clear Lake, Quincy Law, Lafayette, Ind., Cameron Law, Clear Lake, Jeremy (special friend, Rosalie) Baker,
Troutman, N.C., Jacob Baker and Rebecca Baker, Clear Lake.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, James G. Law, and Vera and Frank Kluseman; brother, Eldon G. Law; half-sisters, Charlotte Saliger, and Sandy Hamlin; and half-brother, Dale Kluseman.

Ileen was born Aug. 25, 1931 in McIntire, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis Warren and Helen (Paul) Burns. She attended country school through eighth grade. Her family moved to Rockford, Iowa, when Ileen was 14. She then
worked in the local grocery store with her dad, who was the manager.

Ileen married Charles S. Tifft on April 9, 1950 in Rockford. She was a CNA for many years before retirement. Ileen loved spending time with her family and friends and traveling with her husband. She enjoyed working in her
yard tending to her flowers, camping, reading, shopping and volunteering through the local Area Education Agency. Ileen was a member of Saint Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs and Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake where she was active in church circle.

Ileen is survived by five children, Bill Tifft, and wife, Mary, of Omaha, Neb., Linda McCoole, and husband, David, of Jacksonville, N.C., Donna Ponto and husband, Mark, of Greene, Iowa, Dennis Tifft, and husband, Steve, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Larry Tifft, and partner, John, of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Shiloh, Shanna, Michael, Renee, Zeke, Shelley and Mandy; five great-grandchildren, Cooper, Megan, Chloe, Emma and

Tiffany Jean Banta, age 19, of Forest City, Iowa, passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 west of Forest City as a result of injuries received in an auto accident.

Tiffany Jean, the daughter of Tom and Teya Zwierzycki Banta, was born June 20, 1994 in Iowa City, Iowa. Tiffany grew up in Forest City and Garner.

Tiffany attended school in Garner and graduated from the Garner Hayfield High School in 2012. While in high school, Tiffany participated in cheerleading and art. She was currently working at Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

Tiffany was a good friend to all and a hard worker. She loved to listen to music and was a huge fan of Justin Bieber. The love and life she shared with her family, friends and especially her sister, Chyann, is a holy eternal bond.

SIMON HEMMINGS

Simon Wesley Hemmings, infant son of Peter and Gina Hemmings, of Ventura, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2014 at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City.

Simon Wesley Hemmings passed from the womb into the loving arms of Jesus around 5:16 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, and his lifeless, but beautiful body was delivered at 5:58 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23. His perfect little body
that was fearfully and wonderfully made by his Heavenly Father weighed 9 lbs. 6.4 oz. and was 21 3/4" long.

Left to cherish Simon’s memory are his loving parents, Peter and Gina (Van Der Molen) Hemmings, Ventura; maternal grandfather, Roger “Papa” Van Der Molen, Pella, Iowa; and paternal grandparents, Roger and Beth
Hemmings, Ottumwa, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Jean “Meema” Van Der Molen.
