Paul Sherman Bruns Sr.
Mr. Paul Sherman Bruns Sr., 74, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday,
Dec. 8, 1998 with his family present.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 11
at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred
Lewis of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, officiating.
Graveside services were held at the Carroll Cemetery, Carroll, Iowa,
with the Rev. David Clark of the United Methodist Church, Carroll,
officiating. Military honors were held. The family suggests memorials
to Hospice of North Iowa.
Paul was born Nov. 10, 1924 in Titonka,
Iowa, the son of Henry Albert and Clara Mary (Sherman) Bruns. He
attended grade school and began high school in Titonka. He graduated
from Mason City High School, Mason City, Iowa, in 1943. While at Mason
City High, he received many awards in football, basketball and
baseball. He played on the undefeated football and basketball teams in
1943. After his graduation he served his country over seas with the
105th Artillery Unit during World War II.
Following the service, he graduated from
Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, with a bachelor of science degree in
physical education and social studies. He married Arleen M. Garrison
on July 28, 1945 in Mason City. To this union three children were
born. From 1950-1953 he taught social studies and physical education
programs as well as coaching boys and girls basketball. Then in 1953
he moved to Carroll, where he was the high school history teacher plus
head basketball coach, golf coach and also assistant football coach.
Paul moved to Clear Lake in 1967 where he
owned and operated J & N Trailer sales until 1974, when he opened the
Jack of Diamonds Restaurant in Clear Lake until 1977. In 1978 he
returned to coaching at Charles City, Iowa until 1980.
Paul married Geneva H. Daugard on May 13,
1978 in Las Vegas, Nev. They later worked together in Los Angeles and
the San Diego, Calif. Area until they moved back to Humboldt, Iowa.
After his wife’s death in 1996 he moved to Clear Lake to be closer to
his family.
Throughout Paul’s life he was highly
regarded as a fierce competitor and an outstanding coach. He had a
keen interest in basketball and had a zealous attraction to golf. He
always had a loving fondness for his family.
He was a member of Clear Lake United
Methodist Church, Clear Lake, and Clear Lake VFW.
He is survived by his son, Paul G. Bruns,
Clear Lake; one daughter, Tamara A. Bruns, Longbeach, Calif.; two
grandchildren, Paul Robert Bruns, North Sioux City, S. D., and Robyn
R. Davidson and her husband, David, Clear Lake; one brother Dennis
Lawrence Bruns and his wife, Diane, Lake Forest, Ill.; and one sister,
Shirley Reeff and her husband, Nick, Everett, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
wife, Geneva; one son, David Allen Bruns; one brother Lee V. Bruns;
and two sisters, Joanne G. Bruns and Mary Uhl.
Melville William “Bud” Hughes
Melville William “Bud”
Hughes, 84, a lifetime resident of Clear Lake, Iowa, died of natural
causes Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec.
12 at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev.
Thomas Healey officiating. Memorials may be made to the First
Congregational Church Endowment Fund.
Bud was born in Clear Lake on April 7,
1914, the son of Melville P. And Celia “Clack” Hughes, and dedicated
his life to family and service to the community and church. Bud’s
grandparents settled in Clear Lake in the mid-1800’s.
Bud was active in the Boy Scouts. He earned
Eagle Scout in 1930; the Silver Beaver, Scouter’s Key, and the
Explorer Silver Award in 1958; and the Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor
in 1961. Bud served as first scoutmaster for Troop 199 at Opportunity
Village in 1981. His oldest scout was 70.
Bud attended the First Congregational Church
founded by his great-grandfather, Elder Wood, and was a member of the
Boards of Trustees and Deacons for many years. He gave the keynote
address at the third annual meeting of the National Association of
Congregational-Christian Churches in Hartford, Conn.
Bud was an active business man supporter of
Clear Lake his entire life.
He served on the Clear Lake School Board from 1947 to
1953, was honored as Clear Lake’s Man of the Year in 1951 for serving
as General Chairman of the Clear Lake Centennial, and was a long time
member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions Club where he received the Melvin
Jones Award, the highest award given in the Lions organization.
In 1984, Bud was honored with the Iowa
Governor’s Volunteer Award.
Bud married Lois Padelford in 1939.
He is survived by four sons, Melville P.
“Duke” Hughes and his wife, RoseMarie, Novato, Calif., Justin R.
Hughes and his wife, Joyce, Federicksburg, Va., Alan D. Hughes and his
wife, Salimah Majeed, Minneapolis, Minn., and Craig B. Hughes and his
wife, Barbara, San Diego, Calif.; one brother, Dick Hughes and his
wife, Joan, Clear Lake; four sisters Mary Ann Hughes, Clear Lake,
Elizabeth Morrissey, Edina, Minn., Margaret Doudna, Colorado Springs,
Colo., and Katherine Short, Clear Lake; 11 grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; and countless children of all ages touched by his
tireless devotion to service.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
and wife, Lois, in 1989.
Dorothy Louise Hoit
Dorothy Louise Hoit, 89, of Clear Lake,
Iowa, formerly of Columbus, Neb., died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the
Manly Nursing & Rehab Center, in Manly, Iowa.
Graveside services were held Monday, Dec.
14, at the Clear Lake Cemetery, with the Rev. Fred Lewis of the United
Methodist Church in Clear Lake officiating.
The family of Dorothy Louise Hoit has
requested that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s
Foundation in her memory.
Dorothy Louise Hoit was born on Sept. 23,
1909, in southern Iowa, and was raised in Clear Lake. Dorothy was
adopted an an early age by Jesse Cooper and Anna (Lottie) Davenport
and was blessed with a large number of brothers and sisters.
She was united in marriage to Roy Vernon
Hoit on Jan. 4, 1930, in Clear Lake. He preceded her in death on April
26, 1978.
She was raised a Methodist, and was a
member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.
She is survived by a daughter, Anna Craig
and her husband, Rikk of Dunnellon, Fla.; a son, Ronald Hoit and his
wife, Doris, of Mason City, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Susan, Linda,
Ellen, David, JoAnn, Tom, and Robert; a number of great-grandchildren
and a couple of
great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Sanford of Aurora,
Colo.; as well as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; and brothers and sisters.

Lucille M. Rowe Mrs. Lucille M. Rowe, 81, of
Ventura, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998 at her son’s home in North
Mankato, Minn.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, Dec. 17, at the Ventura United Methodist Church, Ventura,
with the Rev. Paul Hasel officiating.
Graveside services were held at
Wayside Cemetery, Chapin, Iowa. The family suggests memorials be made
to the Ventura United Methodist Church or Hospice of Immanuel-St.
Joseph Hospital, Mankato, Minn.
Lucille was born Aug. 18, 1917
in Clear Lake, the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Holmes) Nettleton.
She graduated from Mason City High School in 1936. Lucille worked for
Boomhower Hardware in Mason City, Iowa.
Lucille married Rolland G. Rowe
on June 22, 1941 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City. They
moved to the family farm in the rural Hampton, Iowa area. In 1946 they
moved to a farm three and one-half miles south of Ventura where they
lived until her husband’s death in 1985. She continued to live in the
Clear Lake and Ventura area until moving up to live with her son and
family due to ill health in 1995.
She enjoyed the companionship of
the family dog, Lucky, cooking, club activities, reading, and most of
all, her family. She was a charter member of Union Dozen Club and
member of the Ventura United Methodist Church, Ventura.
She is survived by a son,
Rolland C. "Rollie" Rowe and his wife, Linda, North Mankato; five
grandchildren, Kyle Rowe, North Mankato, Lorri Lastimosa and her
husband, Darrell, Mankato, David McMains, Eagle Lake, Minn., Elizabeth
Ratjatawan and her husband, Sunya, Los Angeles, Calif., and Lis Rowe,
Mankato; and one great-grandchild, Adrianna L. Lastimosa, Mankato.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband; infant son, Arthur; a sister, Olive Frahm; and one
infant sister, Lois Julia Nettleton.
Ann N. Netzel
Ann N. Netzel, 83, of Sunrise
Care Center, Mason City, Iowa, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998 at North
Iowa Mercy Health Center.
Funeral services were held
Monday, Dec. 21 at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, Mason City, with the
Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic
Church officiating. Interment
was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Ann N. Netzel was born Sept. 15,
1915, in Mason City, the daughter of Gus and Pauline (Radio) Radio.
She attended Mason City schools, married Carl Netzel in Mason City and
worked for a short time at Jacob E. Decker. Ann had attended Holy
Family Catholic Church.
She is survived by a son, Jim
Netzel and his wife, Mary, of Charlotte, N.C.; a granddaughter, Emily
Netzel, of Charlotte; and a sister, Mary Eliason of Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; and husband, Carl in 1986.
Lois Marcille Petersen
Lois Marcille Petersen, 80, died
Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998 at her home in Clear Lake, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held
today (Wednesday), Dec. 23, at 1:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 112
N. 4th St., Clear Lake. Officiating the service will be Rev. Kermit
Roisen. Inurnment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made in her name.
Lois was born March 9, 1918 in
the Mason City, Iowa area, the daughter of Carl and Mable Agnes
(Nielsen) Peterson. She first attended Mason City schools and
graduated from Garner High School in 1936. Lois married Horace
Petersen, Feb. 9, 1938 in Mason City, Iowa. They farmed north of Clear
Lake until moving into town in 1987. Lois was a member of Zion
Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
Lois enjoyed getting together
with her family and friends. Among her many interests were crocheting,
knitting, reading, gardening and canning, doing crossword puzzles in
the paper, playing cards and baking lots of cookies and bread. Special
times and memories were made at the Surf. Horace always said she never
lost an argument.
She is survived by her husband,
Horace Petersen, Clear Lake; five children, Peggy Christensen and her
husband, Dick, Daytona Beach, Fla., Pat DeBerg and her husband, Newt,
Iowa Falls, Iowa, Bob Petersen, Des Moines, Iowa, Joan Nash and her
husband, Jim, Antelope, Calif., and Doug Petersen and his wife,
Jackie, Rockwell, Iowa; three sisters Leona Greiman, Garner, Iowa,
Vera Osslund, Mason City, and Phyllis Coyier and her husband, Jim,
Albertville, Minn.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; two brothers, Johnny and Carl LuVerne Peterson; and one
sister, Arlene Peterson; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Peterson; two
brother-in-laws, Ron Greiman and Lee Osslund.
Raymond "Swede" Bergvig
Raymond "Swede" Bergvig, 80,
Fort Dodge, Iowa, died Thursday, Dec. 17,1998 at his home.
Funeral services were held
Monday, Dec. 21, at the chapel of Laufersweiler Sievers Funeral Home,
Fort Dodge, with the Rev. Jana Swenson, pastor of Zion Lutheran
Church, Clear Lake, officiating. Burial was in Corpus Christi Cemetery
with military graveside rites by V.F.W. Post 1856. Memorials may be
left to the discretion of the family.
Raymond "Swede" Bergvig was born
Sept. 1, 1918 in Brook Park, Minn., where he attended country schools.
Following his education he worked as a farm hand on the Hansen Farm in
Scared Heart, Minn. He entered the U.S. Army on Dec. 9, 1941, and
served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his
discharge he returned to Sacred Heart for a brief time before moving
to Lincoln, Neb. where he worked as a mechanic on construction
equipment. He married Leona Mae Willcoxon in 1947 in Lincoln, Neb.
Following their marriage they lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for a
short time before moving to Cherokee, Iowa, where they resided for 14
years. They moved to Fort Dodge in 1966 where he was employed at Gibbs
Cook Equip. and then Zieglers. He retired in 1984.
He was a member of the Pine City
Minnesota American Legion.
He is survived by his daughters,
Chyrl Bergvig, Clear Lake, and Terry Jordan, Iowa City, Iowa; and a
sister, Evelyn Mikkelson, Minneapolis, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his
parents Elias and Gullaug Nilsen Bergvig; his wife, Leona Mae in Jan.
1977; and a brother, Earl.
Emory (Bud) Thoe
Emery (Bud) Ulve Thoe, 80,
formerly of Webster City, Iowa, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998 at the Iowa
Veterans Home, Marshalltown, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held
today (Wednesday), Dec. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess
officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials
may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Emery was born July 23, 1918 at
Lake Mills, Iowa, the son of Lewis Emery and Ida (Ulve) Thoe. He grew
up in Lake Mills and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1936. On
Feb. 1941 he married Gertrude Oss of Spring Valley, Minn. He was in
the Army Airforce during World War II for five years. Most of his time
in service was spent at Tampa, Fla., and Greenville, S.C. Emery
received the Good Conduct Medal while serving in the service. He has
been a member of the American Legion since 1945.
When Emery was discharged from
the service, he went to work at Woodford Wheeler Lumber Company in
1945. While there he received on the job training under GI Bill of
Rights. While at Clear Lake, he joined Zion
Lutheran Church when Reubon
Mostrom was pastor. He was also a Boy Scout leader while in Clear
Lake. In 1951 they moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, and Emery worked for a
Wisconsin Lumber yard. In 1957 they moved to Webster City and he
worked for Raven Lumber Company until it was destroyed by fire.
Continuing to live in Webster City, he was employed at Blairsburg
Co-op Elevator from 1960 to
1970. In 1970 he was asked to be employed at the Kamrar Co-op Elevator
and did so until 1980 at which time he retired. The family continued
to live in Webster City.
On June 16, 1994, Emery became a
resident at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa after becoming
ill with the devastating illness called Alzheimer’s.
He is survived by his wife,
Gertrude Thoe, Webster City; three children, Emery Richard Thoe and
his wife, Elaine, Colorado Springs, Colo., Larry Donald Thoe,
Fairmont, Minn., and Pamela Sue Reginold, Evansdale, Iowa; two
sisters, Laurene Parker, Newhall, Calif., Lillian Haag, Des Moines,
Iowa; one brother, Donald R. Thoe, Skagway, Alaska; seven
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; one son, Gerald Lee Thoe, who was two years old when he died
in 1949; and one sister, Elaine Brattrud.
Ruth Ann Bregante
Ruth Ann Bregante, 69, a former
Mason City, Iowa resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998 at Magnolia
Gardens in Burlingame, Calif.
Funeral service were held
Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, Mason City, with the
Rev. Ronald Stein officiating. Interment was in the Elmwood-St. Joseph
Cemetery.
Ruth was born Oct. 10, 1929, in
Mason City, the daughter of Harold and Gladys (Davison) Jones. She
graduated from Mason City High School. Ruth enjoyed working with arts
and crafts and was known as a "Craft Lady." She was a devoted
homemaker and was very active in the school system while her children
were growing up. She was an accomplished horticulturist who
specialized in roses. Ruth was also an avid John Wayne enthusiast.
She is survived by one son,
Michael and his wife, Cheryl Bregante, San Mateo, Calif.; two
daughters, Karen and her husband, JIm Church of Hayward, Calif., and
Jane and her husband, Paul Dettner, of Eureka, Calif.; a step-sister,
Jane Satter Kayser, Palm Springs, Calif.; and two granddaughters,
Jessica and Erin.
Ruth was preceded in death by
her parents; husband, Al, in May 1988; and one sister, Phyllis
Schaumburg.

Clifford R. Mott
Clifford R. Mott, 89, of Mason City,
died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998 of a lengthy illness at the Heritage Care
Center.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 28, at
St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Michael
Schueller officiating. Burial was in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Clifford R.
Mott Memorial Fund or to the Mason City Senior Center in his
memory.
Clifford R. Mott was born May 9, 1909 in Mason
City at the address which he lived all his life, 686 8th Street SE,
the son of Leonard W. and Ann (Iler) Mott. He attended Mason City
Public Schools and began work at the Peoples Gas and Electric Company
(later Interstate Power) in 1929. He was employed there until 1974, a
total of 45 years in the gas and service department.
He was married to Cecelia Krapp on June 20, 1935
at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Mason City.
Clifford was a charter member of the local
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, #432. He also
belonged to the Mason City Senior Center, the Hawkeye Camera Club, the
American Association of Retired People, the Interstate Power Quarter
Century Club, the Retired Breakfast Club, the North Iowa Golden
Wedding Club and was also a longtime member of the North Iowa Men’s
Garden Club and the Chamber of Commerce Senior Men’s Club. He was the
Boy Scout Leader of the Explorer Troop for many years.
Clifford was also well known for raising
vegetables, especially sweet corn, for many years, and his hobbies
included fishing, traveling, taking pictures and playing
cards.
He is survived by his wife, Cecelia Mott, Mason
City; one daughter, Marcele Kaduce and her husband, Carroll, Mason
City; four sons, Kenneth R. Mott, Dubuque, Douglas C. Mott, Dubuque,
Roger E. Mott, Waterloo, Bryan A. Mott, Mason City; 11 grandchildren,
Dr. Kevin Mott, Columbia, Mo., Mrs. Scott (Kenia) Riddle, Mundelein,
Ill., Mrs. John (Julie) Ely, Cedar Rapids, Michael Mott, Council

Betty J. Shane
Betty J. Shane, 63, of Garner, died
Friday, Dec. 25, 1998 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City, after a four-year struggle with cancer.
There was no visitation. Her body was cremated.
Memorial services will be held today
(Wednesday), Dec. 30, at 1 p.m. at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, with
the Rev. John Ayers, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating.
Betty JoAnn Shane was born Dec. 9, Rockford,
the daughter of William and Marie (Frenz) Carrott. She graduated from
Clear Lake High School.
On Aug. 30, 1967, she married Neal Shane in
Canton, S.D.
Betty was an open-minded, out-going, trusting,
caring person, who loved helping people. She was mom to many, many
“adopted” kids. She loved to fish and collect teddy bears, of which
she had close to 250. She also enjoyed good country music and working
crossword puzzles.
Betty commanded respect without asking for it.
She will be dearly missed, for she was one of a kind and the world was
a brighter and more cheerful place for her being in it.
She is survived by her husband, Neal Shane,
Garner; five children, Marcy Ackley and her husband, Neil, Garner,
Lori Avise and her husband, Jerry, Rockwell, Jean Felts and her
husband, Lonnie, Lexington, N.C., Michelle Shane, Mason City, Tracy
Molnar and her husband, Jim, Abalene, Texas; grandchildren, Chris
Avise, Marie Felts, Billy Felts and Rebecca Molnar; one sister, Sharn
Bailey and her husband, Larry, Plymouth; two brothers, Michael Carrott
and his wife, Virginia, Clear Lake, and Jeff Carrott and his wife,
Pame, Mesa, Ariz.; many nieces; nephews and cousins; and her cats,
Puff and Mitten Kitten.
She was preceded in death by

Caroline B. Thoresen
Caroline B. Thoresen, 80, formerly of
Iowa City, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998 at Manor Care Health Services in
Cedar Rapids following a lengthy illness. There will be no service.

Thoresen was born Aug. 21, 1918 in Clear Lake, the daughter of
Benjamin and Margaret (Nielsen) Fredricks. Caroline graduated from
Clear Lake High School in 1937. She was married to Carlyn Thoresen on
Dec. 23, 1939 in Mason City. In 1968 she moved with her family to Iowa
City. She lived in Cedar Rapids the past five years.
She is
survived by a son, Carlyn (Carl) Thoresen and his wife, Jane, of Cedar
Rapids; and a brother, Andrew G. Fredricks and his wife, Rosalynne of
Hiawatha.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1994; and a sister, June
Peterson.

regarded as a fierce competitor and an outstanding coach. He had a
keen interest in basketball and had a zealous attraction to golf. He
always had a loving fondness for his family.
He was a member of Clear Lake United
Methodist Church, Clear Lake, and Clear Lake VFW.
He is survived by his son, Paul G. Bruns,
Clear Lake; one daughter, Tamara A. Bruns, Longbeach, Calif.; two
grandchildren, Paul Robert Bruns, North Sioux City, S. D., and Robyn
R. Davidson and her husband, David, Clear Lake; one brother Dennis
Lawrence Bruns and his wife, Diane, Lake Forest, Ill.; and one sister,
Shirley Reeff and her husband, Nick, Everett, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
wife, Geneva; one son, David Allen Bruns; one brother Lee V. Bruns;
and two sisters, Joanne G. Bruns and Mary Uhl.
Melville William “Bud” Hughes
Melville William “Bud”
Hughes, 84, a lifetime resident of Clear Lake, Iowa, died of natural
causes Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec.
12 at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev.
Thomas Healey officiating. Memorials may be made to the First
Congregational Church Endowment Fund.
Bud was born in Clear Lake on April 7,
1914, the son of Melville P. And Celia “Clack” Hughes, and dedicated
his life to family and service to the community and church. Bud’s
grandparents settled in Clear Lake in the mid-1800’s.
Bud was active in the Boy Scouts. He earned
Eagle Scout in 1930; the Silver Beaver, Scouter’s Key, and the
Explorer Silver Award in 1958; and the Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor
in 1961. Bud served as first scoutmaster for Troop 199 at Opportunity
Village in 1981. His oldest scout was 70.
Bud attended the First Congregational Church
founded by his great-grandfather, Elder Wood, and was a member of the
Boards of Trustees and Deacons for many years. He gave the keynote
address at the third annual meeting of the National Association of
Congregational-Christian Churches in Hartford, Conn.
Bud was an active business man supporter of
Clear Lake his entire life.
He served on the Clear Lake School Board from 1947 to
1953, was honored as Clear Lake’s Man of the Year in 1951 for serving
as General Chairman of the Clear Lake Centennial, and was a long time
member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions Club where he received the Melvin
Jones Award, the highest award given in the Lions organization.
In 1984, Bud was honored with the Iowa
Governor’s Volunteer Award.
Bud married Lois Padelford in 1939.
He is survived by four sons, Melville P.
“Duke” Hughes and his wife, RoseMarie, Novato, Calif., Justin R.
Hughes and his wife, Joyce, Federicksburg, Va., Alan D. Hughes and his
wife, Salimah Majeed, Minneapolis, Minn., and Craig B. Hughes and his
wife, Barbara, San Diego, Calif.; one brother, Dick Hughes and his
wife, Joan, Clear Lake; four sisters Mary Ann Hughes, Clear Lake,
Elizabeth Morrissey, Edina, Minn., Margaret Doudna, Colorado Springs,
Colo., and Katherine Short, Clear Lake; 11 grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; and countless children of all ages touched by his
tireless devotion to service.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
and wife, Lois, in 1989.
Dorothy Louise Hoit
Dorothy Louise Hoit, 89, of Clear Lake,
Iowa, formerly of Columbus, Neb., died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the
Manly Nursing & Rehab Center, in Manly, Iowa.
Graveside services were held Monday, Dec.
14, at the Clear Lake Cemetery, with the Rev. Fred Lewis of the United
Methodist Church in Clear Lake officiating.
The family of Dorothy Louise Hoit has
requested that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s
Foundation in her memory.
Dorothy Louise Hoit was born on Sept. 23,
1909, in southern Iowa, and was raised in Clear Lake. Dorothy was
adopted an an early age by Jesse Cooper and Anna (Lottie) Davenport
and was blessed with a large number of brothers and sisters.
She was united in marriage to Roy Vernon
Hoit on Jan. 4, 1930, in Clear Lake. He preceded her in death on April
26, 1978.
She was raised a Methodist, and was a
member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.
She is survived by a daughter, Anna Craig
and her husband, Rikk of Dunnellon, Fla.; a son, Ronald Hoit and his
wife, Doris, of Mason City, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Susan, Linda,
Ellen, David, JoAnn, Tom, and Robert; a number of great-grandchildren
and a couple of
great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Sanford of Aurora,
Colo.; as well as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; and brothers and sisters.

Lucille M. Rowe Mrs. Lucille M. Rowe, 81, of
Ventura, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998 at her son’s home in North
Mankato, Minn.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, Dec. 17, at the Ventura United Methodist Church, Ventura,
with the Rev. Paul Hasel officiating.
Graveside services were held at
Wayside Cemetery, Chapin, Iowa. The family suggests memorials be made
to the Ventura United Methodist Church or Hospice of Immanuel-St.
Joseph Hospital, Mankato, Minn.
Lucille was born Aug. 18, 1917
in Clear Lake, the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Holmes) Nettleton.
She graduated from Mason City High School in 1936. Lucille worked for
Boomhower Hardware in Mason City, Iowa.
Lucille married Rolland G. Rowe
on June 22, 1941 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City. They
moved to the family farm in the rural Hampton, Iowa area. In 1946 they
moved to a farm three and one-half miles south of Ventura where they
lived until her husband’s death in 1985. She continued to live in the
Clear Lake and Ventura area until moving up to live with her son and
family due to ill health in 1995.
She enjoyed the companionship of
the family dog, Lucky, cooking, club activities, reading, and most of
all, her family. She was a charter member of Union Dozen Club and
member of the Ventura United Methodist Church, Ventura.
She is survived by a son,
Rolland C. "Rollie" Rowe and his wife, Linda, North Mankato; five
grandchildren, Kyle Rowe, North Mankato, Lorri Lastimosa and her
husband, Darrell, Mankato, David McMains, Eagle Lake, Minn., Elizabeth
Ratjatawan and her husband, Sunya, Los Angeles, Calif., and Lis Rowe,
Mankato; and one great-grandchild, Adrianna L. Lastimosa, Mankato.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband; infant son, Arthur; a sister, Olive Frahm; and one
infant sister, Lois Julia Nettleton.

Ann N. Netzel was born Sept. 15,
1915, in Mason City, the daughter of Gus and Pauline (Radio) Radio.
She attended Mason City schools, married Carl Netzel in Mason City and
worked for a short time at Jacob E. Decker. Ann had attended Holy
Family Catholic Church.
She is survived by a son, Jim
Netzel and his wife, Mary, of Charlotte, N.C.; a granddaughter, Emily
Netzel, of Charlotte; and a sister, Mary Eliason of Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; and husband, Carl in 1986.
Lois Marcille Petersen
Lois Marcille Petersen, 80, died
Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998 at her home in Clear Lake, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held
today (Wednesday), Dec. 23, at 1:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 112
N. 4th St., Clear Lake. Officiating the service will be Rev. Kermit
Roisen. Inurnment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made in her name.
Lois was born March 9, 1918 in
the Mason City, Iowa area, the daughter of Carl and Mable Agnes
(Nielsen) Peterson. She first attended Mason City schools and
graduated from Garner High School in 1936. Lois married Horace
Petersen, Feb. 9, 1938 in Mason City, Iowa. They farmed north of Clear
Lake until moving into town in 1987. Lois was a member of Zion
Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
Lois enjoyed getting together
with her family and friends. Among her many interests were crocheting,
knitting, reading, gardening and canning, doing crossword puzzles in
the paper, playing cards and baking lots of cookies and bread. Special
times and memories were made at the Surf. Horace always said she never
lost an argument.
She is survived by her husband,
Horace Petersen, Clear Lake; five children, Peggy Christensen and her
husband, Dick, Daytona Beach, Fla., Pat DeBerg and her husband, Newt,
Iowa Falls, Iowa, Bob Petersen, Des Moines, Iowa, Joan Nash and her
husband, Jim, Antelope, Calif., and Doug Petersen and his wife,
Jackie, Rockwell, Iowa; three sisters Leona Greiman, Garner, Iowa,
Vera Osslund, Mason City, and Phyllis Coyier and her husband, Jim,
Albertville, Minn.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; two brothers, Johnny and Carl LuVerne Peterson; and one
sister, Arlene Peterson; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Peterson; two

Raymond "Swede" Bergvig, 80,
Fort Dodge, Iowa, died Thursday, Dec. 17,1998 at his home.
Funeral services were held
Monday, Dec. 21, at the chapel of Laufersweiler Sievers Funeral Home,
Fort Dodge, with the Rev. Jana Swenson, pastor of Zion Lutheran
Church, Clear Lake, officiating. Burial was in Corpus Christi Cemetery
with military graveside rites by V.F.W. Post 1856. Memorials may be
left to the discretion of the family.
Raymond "Swede" Bergvig was born
Sept. 1, 1918 in Brook Park, Minn., where he attended country schools.
Following his education he worked as a farm hand on the Hansen Farm in
Scared Heart, Minn. He entered the U.S. Army on Dec. 9, 1941, and
served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his
discharge he returned to Sacred Heart for a brief time before moving
to Lincoln, Neb. where he worked as a mechanic on construction
equipment. He married Leona Mae Willcoxon in 1947 in Lincoln, Neb.
Following their marriage they lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for a
short time before moving to Cherokee, Iowa, where they resided for 14
years. They moved to Fort Dodge in 1966 where he was employed at Gibbs
Cook Equip. and then Zieglers. He retired in 1984.
He was a member of the Pine City
Minnesota American Legion.
He is survived by his daughters,
Chyrl Bergvig, Clear Lake, and Terry Jordan, Iowa City, Iowa; and a
sister, Evelyn Mikkelson, Minneapolis, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his
parents Elias and Gullaug Nilsen Bergvig; his wife, Leona Mae in Jan.
1977; and a brother, Earl.
Emory (Bud) Thoe
Emery (Bud) Ulve Thoe, 80,
formerly of Webster City, Iowa, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998 at the Iowa
Veterans Home, Marshalltown, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held
today (Wednesday), Dec. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess
officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials
may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Emery was born July 23, 1918 at
Lake Mills, Iowa, the son of Lewis Emery and Ida (Ulve) Thoe. He grew
up in Lake Mills and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1936. On
Feb. 1941 he married Gertrude Oss of Spring Valley, Minn. He was in
the Army Airforce during World War II for five years. Most of his time
in service was spent at Tampa, Fla., and Greenville, S.C. Emery
received the Good Conduct Medal while serving in the service. He has
been a member of the American Legion since 1945.
When Emery was discharged from
the service, he went to work at Woodford Wheeler Lumber Company in
1945. While there he received on the job training under GI Bill of
Rights. While at Clear Lake, he joined Zion
Lutheran Church when Reubon
Mostrom was pastor. He was also a Boy Scout leader while in Clear
Lake. In 1951 they moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, and Emery worked for a
Wisconsin Lumber yard. In 1957 they moved to Webster City and he
worked for Raven Lumber Company until it was destroyed by fire.
Continuing to live in Webster City, he was employed at Blairsburg
Co-op Elevator from 1960 to
1970. In 1970 he was asked to be employed at the Kamrar Co-op Elevator
and did so until 1980 at which time he retired. The family continued
to live in Webster City.
On June 16, 1994, Emery became a
resident at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa after becoming
ill with the devastating illness called Alzheimer’s.
He is survived by his wife,
Gertrude Thoe, Webster City; three children, Emery Richard Thoe and
his wife, Elaine, Colorado Springs, Colo., Larry Donald Thoe,
Fairmont, Minn., and Pamela Sue Reginold, Evansdale, Iowa; two
sisters, Laurene Parker, Newhall, Calif., Lillian Haag, Des Moines,
Iowa; one brother, Donald R. Thoe, Skagway, Alaska; seven
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; one son, Gerald Lee Thoe, who was two years old when he died
in 1949; and one sister, Elaine Brattrud.
Ruth Ann Bregante
Ruth Ann Bregante, 69, a former
Mason City, Iowa resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998 at Magnolia
Gardens in Burlingame, Calif.
Funeral service were held
Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, Mason City, with the
Rev. Ronald Stein officiating. Interment was in the Elmwood-St. Joseph
Cemetery.
Ruth was born Oct. 10, 1929, in
Mason City, the daughter of Harold and Gladys (Davison) Jones. She
graduated from Mason City High School. Ruth enjoyed working with arts
and crafts and was known as a "Craft Lady." She was a devoted
homemaker and was very active in the school system while her children
were growing up. She was an accomplished horticulturist who
specialized in roses. Ruth was also an avid John Wayne enthusiast.
She is survived by one son,
Michael and his wife, Cheryl Bregante, San Mateo, Calif.; two
daughters, Karen and her husband, JIm Church of Hayward, Calif., and
Jane and her husband, Paul Dettner, of Eureka, Calif.; a step-sister,
Jane Satter Kayser, Palm Springs, Calif.; and two granddaughters,
Jessica and Erin.
Ruth was preceded in death by
her parents; husband, Al, in May 1988; and one sister, Phyllis
Schaumburg.

Clifford R. Mott
Clifford R. Mott, 89, of Mason City,
died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998 of a lengthy illness at the Heritage Care
Center.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 28, at
St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Michael
Schueller officiating. Burial was in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Clifford R.
Mott Memorial Fund or to the Mason City Senior Center in his
memory.
Clifford R. Mott was born May 9, 1909 in Mason
City at the address which he lived all his life, 686 8th Street SE,
the son of Leonard W. and Ann (Iler) Mott. He attended Mason City
Public Schools and began work at the Peoples Gas and Electric Company
(later Interstate Power) in 1929. He was employed there until 1974, a
total of 45 years in the gas and service department.
He was married to Cecelia Krapp on June 20, 1935
at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Mason City.
Clifford was a charter member of the local
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, #432. He also
belonged to the Mason City Senior Center, the Hawkeye Camera Club, the
American Association of Retired People, the Interstate Power Quarter
Century Club, the Retired Breakfast Club, the North Iowa Golden
Wedding Club and was also a longtime member of the North Iowa Men’s
Garden Club and the Chamber of Commerce Senior Men’s Club. He was the
Boy Scout Leader of the Explorer Troop for many years.
Clifford was also well known for raising
vegetables, especially sweet corn, for many years, and his hobbies
included fishing, traveling, taking pictures and playing
cards.
He is survived by his wife, Cecelia Mott, Mason
City; one daughter, Marcele Kaduce and her husband, Carroll, Mason

Betty J. Shane
Betty J. Shane, 63, of Garner, died
Friday, Dec. 25, 1998 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason
City, after a four-year struggle with cancer.
There was no visitation. Her body was cremated.
Memorial services will be held today
(Wednesday), Dec. 30, at 1 p.m. at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, with
the Rev. John Ayers, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating.
Betty JoAnn Shane was born Dec. 9, Rockford,
the daughter of William and Marie (Frenz) Carrott. She graduated from
Clear Lake High School.
On Aug. 30, 1967, she married Neal Shane in
Canton, S.D.
Betty was an open-minded, out-going, trusting,
caring person, who loved helping people. She was mom to many, many
“adopted” kids. She loved to fish and collect teddy bears, of which
she had close to 250. She also enjoyed good country music and working
crossword puzzles.
Betty commanded respect without asking for it.
She will be dearly missed, for she was one of a kind and the world was
a brighter and more cheerful place for her being in it.
She is survived by her husband, Neal Shane,
Garner; five children, Marcy Ackley and her husband, Neil, Garner,
Lori Avise and her husband, Jerry, Rockwell, Jean Felts and her
husband, Lonnie, Lexington, N.C., Michelle Shane, Mason City, Tracy

Caroline B. Thoresen, 80, formerly of
Iowa City, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998 at Manor Care Health Services in
Cedar Rapids following a lengthy illness. There will be no service.

Thoresen was born Aug. 21, 1918 in Clear Lake, the daughter of
Benjamin and Margaret (Nielsen) Fredricks. Caroline graduated from
Clear Lake High School in 1937. She was married to Carlyn Thoresen on
Dec. 23, 1939 in Mason City. In 1968 she moved with her family to Iowa
City. She lived in Cedar Rapids the past five years.
She is
survived by a son, Carlyn (Carl) Thoresen and his wife, Jane, of Cedar
Rapids; and a brother, Andrew G. Fredricks and his wife, Rosalynne of
Hiawatha.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1994; and a sister, June
Peterson.
