Carolyn K. Peterson

Carolyn K. Peterson, 47, of Ventura, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 30, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Belmond, Iowa, with the Fr. Jack Paisley officiating. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery, Belmond.

Carolyn Peterson was born Oct. 28, 1950 in Belmond, the daughter of James T. and June (Lester) McLaughlin. She attended school in Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School in 1968. Carolyn then attended Weaver Airline School in Kansas City, Kan.

After completing airline school, she was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Mason City. She married Richard Stadtlander in 1975.

On June 4, 1983, Carolyn married Robert Peterson at Las Vegas, Nev. They lived in Tulsa, Okla., until they retired from the telephone company. After they retired, the couple spent the winter months in Park City, Utah, and Lake Havasu City, Ariz; and they spent the summer months in Ventura.

She is survived by her husband, Robert of Ventura; mother, June McLaughlin of Belmond, Iowa; one brother, Phillip McLaughlin and his wife, Nancy of Thornton, Iowa; three sisters, Marty Taylor and her

husband, Charles, of Clear Lake, L.D. McLaughlin of Clear Lake, and Kathy Hunt and her husband, Brian, of Colo, Iowa; one niece; four nephews; one great-niece; one great-nephew; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, James McLaughlin in 1992.

Honorary pallbearers were Steven Ainger, Michael Peterson, Jeff Ainger and Charles Taylor.

Pallbearers were Mark Taylor, Craig McLaughlin, Rebecca Anderberg, Richard Stadtlander, Ryan Taylor and Jane McLaughlin.


 

James R. Henze

James R. Henze, 60, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Monday, June 1, 1998 at his home from complications of cancer.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 4, at the Church of Christ, Clarksville, Iowa, with Pastor Val Swinton officiating. Burial was in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa.

He was born on Jan. 6, 1938 in Grundy County, Iowa, the son of Chris and Mabel (Immings) Henze. He attended school in Shell Rock and following his schooling he went to work for the Rath Packing Company and then the John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo, Iowa. On June 5, 1960, he was united in marriage to Barbara Friis in Janesville, Iowa. They made their home in Cedar Falls, Iowa, until 1976 when they moved to Waverly. Jim retired from John Deere in 1977 after 20 years with the company. In 1993 they moved to Shell Rock where they have since lived.

He attended church at the Church of Christ in Clarksville and enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons, Scott Henze of Clear Lake and Todd Henze and his wife, Stephanie, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; one sister and brother-in-law, Lavelle and Joe Schneider of Shell Rock; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Shirley Rae Schmidt.


Catherine Eleanor Winga

Catherine Eleanor Winga, 93, of Washington, Iowa, died Saturday, June 5, 1998 at the United Presbyterian Home, Washington.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 9 at the United Presbyterian Church, Washington, with the Rev. Ron McMenamin and the Rev. Jim Edwards officiating. Interment was in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington.

Memorials contributions can be sent to the United Presbyterian Church or United Presbyterian Home.

Catherine Winga was born July 30, 1904 at Columbus Junction, Iowa, the daughter of Rowland and Margaret (Humphrey) Rees. She graduated from Wyman High School and received a BA degree from Iowa State Teachers College in 1927. She taught school for several years.

On Oct. 1, 1932 she was united in marriage to John A. Winga near Columbus Junction. She was a hostess and cashier at Winga’s Restaurant with her husband and son for 60 years. She had lived in Washington since 1928.

Catherine was a member of the United Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Fortnightly Club, Order of Eastern Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem and Iowa Welsh Society.

She is survived by sons, John Albert Winga, Jr. and his wife, Carol, Washington, Dr. Edward Rees Winga and his wife, Sharon, LaCrosse, Wis., and Richard Rowland Winga and his wife, Betty, Clear Lake; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1976; eight brothers; and four sisters.


Darrel R. Hein

Darrel R. Hein, 73, of Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 8, at the Warner Funeral Home, Spencer, Iowa, with the Rev. Tom Dettmer of Bethany Lutheran Church, Spencer, officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Spencer. Full military rites were provided at the cemetery by the Spencer V.F.W. Post.

Darrel was born Oct. 17, 1924, to Jessie and Lewis Hein of Spencer. He was raised at Spencer and educated in the rural and Spencer school systems. In the summer of 1942, Darrel moved to Cherokee, where he learned the shoe repair business from his older brother, Dale. In the late fall of 1943, Darrel entered the U.S. Navy (Sea-Bees) and served in the South Pacific from Guadalcanal to the Philippine Islands and was discharged from the navy in February of 1946.

After returning to Spencer, Darrell purchased an existing shoe repair shop which he operated until 1950. In 1947, Darrel joined the Spencer National Guard unit, which was called to active duty in August of 1950 for the Korean War. The Spencer unit reported to Camp McCoy where Darrel was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant with a direct field commission.

Later, Darrel was sent to Korea. He served six months with a U.S. Quartermaster and was adviser to the Korean Army. In January of 1954, Darrel was released from active duty. Darrel received many citations and medals while in the military.

After returning from Korea, Darrel’s older brother passed away suddenly and Darrel returned to Cherokee and took over his brother’s shoe repair shop. In 1960, the shop was destroyed by fire. In 1962, Darrel took over the Trianon Roller Rink at Spencer and the Majestic Roller ink at Arnolds Park. Darrel was also a professional roller skater. He married Lorna Klatt on Feb. 11, 1971, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

In 1975, Darrel sold the two rinks and purchased the Surf Ballroom and Convention Center in Clear Lake, where he initiated the annual Buddy Holly Tribute. Darrel operated the Surf until 1991. Darrel served on the Board of Directors of the National Ballroom and Entertainment Association and was elected president of that association in 1986. Darrel owned and operated H & H Shoe Service from 1990 until his death, as a certified reflexologist and an OST. Darrel was past Post Commander of the .F.W. Post in Spencer, a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine Club of Spencer and Aka Beker Shrine Temple in Sioux City, and was an associate member of the El Kahir Shrine Temple in Cedar Rapids.

He is survived by his wife, Lorna Hein of Mason City; a daughter, Dianna Peterson of Des Moines; sons, Dennis Hein and his wife, Jackie, of Spirit Lake, and John Hein of Forest City; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Clinton, Dale and Harold.


 

William Dean Boell

William Dean Boell, 64, of Carroll, Iowa, died Thursday, June 11, 1998 at the St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll following a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 13 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with the Pastor Charles Haake officiating. Interment was in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors by the Maurice Dunn Post of the American Legion.

William Boell was born Dec. 27, 1933 at Carroll, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Eva June Callaway Boell. Bill was baptized on July 12, 1938 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on May 16, 1948. He attended Carroll schools. On July 14, 1953, he married Violet Wenck at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with the Pastor Mark Bergmann officiating.

Bill was a lifelong resident of Carroll. He was best known for working for the City of Carroll at the Water Department for many years until his retirement in 1994 due to ill health. He was a lifelong resident of Carroll. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran church and served as church usher for many years. He was a member of the Maurice Dunn Post of the American Legion of Carroll.

He is survived by his wife, Violet, Carroll; three daughters, Charlene Vonnahme and her husband, Gene, Carroll, Bev Brincks and her husband, Alan, Carroll, and Karen Swartz and her husband, Doug, of Clear Lake; his mother-in-law, Hulda Wenck of Carroll; and seven grandchildren, Greg and Julie Vonnahme, Scott, Keith, and Kevin Brincks, and April and Emily Swartz; a sister, Marlene Heuton and her husband, Roland, Albert City, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Mary Boell of Bimigi, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Donovan; and his father-in-law, Harry Wenck.

Pallbearers were Greg Vonnahme, Scott Brincks, Keith Brincks, Kevin Brincks, Gary Heuton, and Randy Heuton.


Tammy Aileen (Lord) Barron

Tammy Aileen (Lord) Barron, 27, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998 of pancreatic cancer.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 13 at First Evangelical Free Church, Ames, Iowa, with the Rev. David Staff officiating. Burial will be held at Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

Memorials may be directed to the Aileen (Tammy) Barron Memorial Fund, 1535 Grand Ave., Ames.

Tammy was born Mary 14, 1971 in Olean, N.Y., the daughter of Richard M. and Doyce (Sadler) Lord.

Tammy was a Mary Kay consultant and an elementary school teacher. She married William Barron on July 25, 1992, in Clear Lake. She lived in the Garner/Clear Lake area for nine years.

She was active in Campus Crusade for Christ in college and continued studies in church after graduation from Iowa State University in 1994. She lived in Ames for nine years.

Tammy enjoyed spending time at home with her two-year-old son, Josiah, and being a homemaker. She also was involved in mission work overseas. Her favorite pastime was being a friend.

She is survived by her parents who live in Burnsville, Minn.; her husband, William; and one son, Josiah, of Ames; one brother, Richard Keith Lord and his family, of Perry, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Christopher Lord, in 1987.

Donald L. Gasaway

Donald L. Gasaway, 80, of Mason City, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

A scriptural prayer service was held Thursday, June 18, followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary.

Donald L. Gasaway was born June 19, 1917, in Mason City, the son of John and Nellie (Conroy) Gasaway. He married Arlyne Virginia Jackson on Feb. 24, 1941 in Manly, Iowa.

Donald graduated from St. Joseph High School and Hamilton Business College. He worked as parts manager at S & R Chevrolet for 45 years and then also worked for Schukei and Sedars Motors until retiring.

He was an avid golfer. He enjoyed playing cribbage and walking in the mall. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church where he ushered for many years, and also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1006, Mason City.

He is survived by his son, Donald D. Gasaway, Marion, Ill.; one brother, John Gasaway, Concord, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Barb Gasaway, Mason City, Colleen Dillon and her husband, Kenneth, Folsom, Calif.; and one brother-in-law, Delbert Jackson and his wife, Jeanette, St. Mary’s, Ind., and Dale Jackson and his wife, Lucille, Tuscon, Ariz.; 13 nieces; seven nephews; and a long lifetime friend, Kenny Krieger, Mason City

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlyne on Nov. 15, 1997; two brothers, William and Charles Gasaway; one sister, Agnes Fitzgerald; and a sister-in-law, Laura Gasaway.


Norma Sorensen

Norma Sorensen, 65, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, June 20, 1998 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), June 24, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Following the service, the body will be cremated.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Norma was born April 30, 1933 in McCallsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Raynard and Sanna (Harestad) Skartvedt. She married Dale Sorensen of Exira, Iowa on Aug. 15, 1953. The couple had four children. She was a graduate of Ellsworth Consolidated School and Iowa State Teacher’s College. She taught elementary education at several Iowa locations, including Mapleton, Goldfield, Estherville and Corwith-Wesley. Active in her community, church and music, she was a member of several community choruses, church choirs, WELCA and PEO. She also enjoyed membership in Grace Circle at Zion Lutheran Church and Questers. After living in Lake Mills, Iowa for 10 years Dale and Norma retired to Clear Lake in 1994.

Norma enjoyed reading, lake activities and having her family and grandchildren around her.

She is survived by her husband, Dale Sorensen, Clear Lake; three sons, Michael Sorensen and his wife, Juliette, Irving, Texas, Mark Sorensen and his wife, Jennifer, Raleigh, N.C., and John Sorensen and his wife, Lynette, of West Des Moines, Iowa; a daughter, Susan Haupts and her husband, Ben, of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Britt, Becky, Lucia, Katy, Danen and Jordie Sorensen, and Bradley Haupts.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Raymond Skartvedt; and a sister, Arlene Skartvedt.


Jennie T. Lorenz

Jennie T. Lorenz, 88, of Kahl Home, Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Ames, Iowa, and Clear Lake, Iowa, died Friday, June 19, 1998 at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 23, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline, Ill. Burial was at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the church or Kahl Home, Davenport.

Mrs. Lorenz was a school teacher in North Dakota and Iowa for 20 years. She retired in 1950.

Jennie Jensen was born July 16, 1909, in Valley City, N.D., to Peter and Marie (Leegard) Jensen. She married Paul Lorenz on July 22, 1931, in Oriska, N.D. He died in October 1972.

She was a graduate of Valley City Teachers College, Valley City, N.D.

She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and Moline Senior Citizens and a life member of Catholic Daughters of America.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Mary Ellen Lorenz, East Moline, Ill ; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and John Koppel, Valley City.

She was preceded in death by a son, Duane Lorenz, in 1976; grandsons, Christopher Lorenz in 1995, and Scott Paul Lorenz in 1997; and a great-granddaughter in 1985.


Golda Kirk

Golda Kirk, 84, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at Ebenezer Ridges Care Center, Burnsville, Minn. The funeral service will be Thursday, June 25, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. at the Agape Christian Family Church, Clear Lake.

Interment will follow at Lincoln Township Cemetery, Fertile, Iowa.

Visitation will be held today (Wednesday), June 24, from 4-7 p.m.

Further arrangements are incomplete at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.
