John A. Dahlum

John A. Dahlum of Myrtle, Minnesota, died on Thursday,
September 10, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center, Albert
Lea, Minnesota. He was 57 years old.
Funeral services were held
at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, September 12, at the Bethlehem
Lutheran Church, Myrtle. Pastor Krista Stokke officiated.
Visitation was from 4-7:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Bonnerup
Funeral Service and one hour before the service at the
church. Interment was in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.
John was born in Scarville,
Iowa, on December 29, 1951, the son of Harry and Sylvia (Fjelstad)
Dahlum. He graduated from the Glenville High School in 1969.
John was married to Frances Oakland on August 4, 1969 at the
Gordonsville Methodist Church. He was a member of the
Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He had lived in Freeborn County
most of his life. John had owned Myrtle Trucking and John
Boys Bar in Myrtle for 20 years. He worked as a foreman at
Deluxe of Lake Mills, Iowa; Berg Corp of Albert Lea; Nelson
Trucking; and Lukes Brothers.
He was a member of the
Sons of American Legion in Glenville. John was an outdoor
person and enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren, hunting
and ball games. He especially enjoyed spending time with his
children and grandchildren.
John is survived by his
wife of 40 years, Frances "Fran" of Myrtle, Minnesota; son,
Dean (Lynae) Dahlum and children, Carter, Dawson and Gracie,
all of Glenville, Minnesota; daughter, Tracy (Jamie) Dahlum
of Gordonsville, Minnesota; sisters, Janice (Jerry) Van
Ryswyk of Albert Lea, Minnesota and Deb (Marty) Dahlum Olsen
of Lyle, Minnesota; brother, Mike (Sandy) Dahlum of
Glenville, Minnesota; mother-in-law, Carol Oakland of
Northwood; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and numerous
brothers and sisters-in-law.
John was preceded in death
by his parents; father-in-law, Lawrence Oakland; nephews,
Nicholas Dahlum and Darin Oakland; and brothers- in-law,
Peter Oakland and Rick Van Ryswyk.

Glenn O. Ferley
September 16, 2009
Glenn O. Ferley, age 88, of Northwood, Iowa, died on Friday,
September 11, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held
at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, September 14, at the Silver Lake
Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, with Pastor Randy Baldwin
officiating. Burial was in the Silver Lake Lutheran Church
Cemetery. Visitation was on Sunday, September 13, from
3-7:00 p.m., at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills
and continued one hour prior to the services at the church
on Monday. Memorials may be directed to the Silver Lake
Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund.
Glenn Orville Ferley, was
born on December 7, 1920 in Hartland Township, Worth County,
Iowa, to parents Alfred T. and Gena (Loken) Ferley. He
attended country school and was baptized and confirmed at
the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. On
December 19, 1943, Glenn was united in marriage with Lyla C.
Jacobson at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea,
Minnesota, by the Rev. Knutson. The couple made their home
in rural Northwood, where Glenn and Lyla farmed.
The couple enjoyed dancing
and traveling together, visiting places such as Norway,
Alaska, the Ozarks and Branson. Glenn was a lifelong and
active member of the Silver Lake Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his
children, Cheryl (Larry) Schuttler of Grafton, Paul (Sharyl)
Ferley of Northwood, Linda (Jerry) Holty of Hastings,
Minnesota, Gerald (Lucretia) Ferley of Northwood, Shirley
(Terry) Turvold of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Duane (Solla)
Ferley of Hastings, Minnesota and Glenda Schiller of
Hastings, Minnesota; 16 grandchildren; 23
great-grandchildren; brother, Seymour Ferley and his wife,
Darlene of Emmons, Minnesota; a sister, Ardella Hagen of
Manly; and many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and
friends.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; wife, Lyla on October 29, 2003; a baby
brother; and a brother-in-law, Leo Hagen.
The family wishes to
extend their most sincere thanks to the staff at the
Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood and also to the
Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, for the kindness and
respect shown to Glenn and to them during this transition.

Barbara Anne (Boeset)
Kirchgatter

Barbara Anne (Boeset) Kirchgatter, age 60, of Fort Myers
Beach, Florida, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2009,
at her home in Fort Myers Beach. She had courageously been
fighting cancer since the spring of 2008.
Memorial services will be
held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 26, at the
Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar. Visitation
with the family will be one hour prior to the services.
Barbara Anne Boeset, was
born on March 23, 1949, to Hugo and Maxine (Munsell) Boeset
in Grafton, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the
Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. She attended grade
school in Grafton and graduated from the St. Ansgar High
School in 1967. She married Leland Kirchgatter on June 8,
1979. Barb and Lee managed country clubs and golf courses
near Cresco, Iowa, Bemidji, Minnesota and Walker, Minnesota,
between the years of 1980 and 2005. Barb was currently
working at a Walgreens in Fort Myers Beach.
She loved butterflies,
chocolate, her Yorkies Katie and Kodie, Florida and her
family.
Barb is survived by her
husband, Lee; two children, Michael (DeAnn) Read of
Northwood and Amy (Mark) Wallin of Alden, Minnesota; two
step-children, Scott (Mona) Kirchgatter of Anthon, Iowa and
Mark Kirchgatter of Grafton; seven grandchildren, Joseph and
Justin Read of Northwood, Spencer, Jacob and Ryan Wallin of
Alden and Allison and Megan Kirchgatter of Anthon; mother,
Maxine (Norbert) Pint of Forest City; siblings, Hugh (Jan)
Boeset of Naperville, Illinois, Kathleen (Stan) Miller of
Plano, Texas and Angela Anderson (fiancée, Deron Steiner) of
Montgomery, Indiana; half-sister, Phyllis (Harvey) Norby of
St. Ansgar; sister-in-law, Shirley (James) Brock of Osage;
and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death
by her father, Hugo; half-brother, Donald Boeset;
brother-in-law, Donald Kirchgatter; and in-laws, Emil A. and
Mabel Kirchgatter.
Barb’s courage and
positive attitude will be treasured by her family and
friends.

Doyle Boutelle
September 30, 2009
Doyle Boutelle, 88, of Northwood, died on Monday, September
21, 2009, at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.
A graveside service was
held at 9:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 24, at the
Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway, 18 West, Mason City with
Pastor Wendi Gillan officiating. Military graveside honors
were conducted by members of the Our Buddies VFW Memorial
Post #6779 of Northwood. A celebration of Doyle’s life was
held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 24, at the United
Methodist Church, Northwood, with Pastor Wendi Gillan
officiating. Visitation was held from 5-7:00 p.m., on
Wednesday, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood.
Doyle was born on August
2, 1921 in Kensett, the son of Raymond and Mabel (Hildreth)
Boutelle. Doyle graduated from the Kensett High School and
Mason City Junior College. Doyle was inducted into the U.S.
Air Force on March 27, 1943 at Camp Dodge, Iowa and served
with the 492nd Bomb Squadron serving in Burma and India
during WW II, and was honorably discharged as a Corporal on
November 13, 1945, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. On January
16, 1944, Doyle was united in marriage to Dorothy Flarup at
the First United Methodist Church in Mason City and to this
union two daughters were born, Carol and Lonnie. Dorothy
preceded him in death on May 31, 1988. On December 28, 1991,
Doyle was united in marriage to Thelma (Frandle) Krull at
the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.
Doyle’s working years
included working at International Harvester in Mason City
and Hanlontown. In 1957, Doyle and his family moved to
Northwood where Doyle was part owner in the Northwood
Implement Company. After many years Doyle was ready for a
new challenge. Doyle and John Thompson started J-D One Stop,
which they operated for many years. Doyle’s other
accomplishments included establishing a garden center,
building and operating a car wash, building the Viking
Restaurant and the development of the Northwood Mobile Home
Park.
Doyle was the proud
grandpa of five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Doyle was an avid golfer, loved boating, was a die-hard
Minnesota Viking and Northwood-Kensett Viking fan, loved to
go camping in his travel trailer and enjoyed attending his
grandchildren’s activities wherever they might lead him. He
loved woodworking and built many things in his shop for
family and friends. He was very active in the United
Methodist Church in Northwood, serving on and chairing
numerous committees and singing in the church choir. He was
also very active in the Northwood Lions Club and was very
community minded.
Doyle was an extremely
easy going and patient person. He always looked on the
bright side of things and always had a quiet and positive
demeanor. “Well isn’t that nice” was always Doyle’s response
when one of his family showed him something new.
Those left to cherish his
memory are his wife, Thelma Boutelle of Northwood;
daughters, Carol (Phil) Johnson of Mason City and Lonnie
(Steve) Forland of Northwood; grandchildren, Lance (Tina)
Johnson of Mason City, Todd (Sarah) Johnson of Cedar Falls,
Amy Scheib of Ankeny and Chad (Tara) Forland of Emmons,
Minnesota; great-grandchildren, Reid Johnson, Reilly, Tate
and Vance Johnson, McKenna, Raegan and Kamryn Scheib, Kyle
Dion and Brooke Forland; step-children, Brenda (Russ) Ober
of Leesburg, Georgia, Linda (Tom) Engstrom of Mankato,
Minnesota, James (Teresa) Krull of Northwood, Eldon (Janice)
Krull of Marshall, Minnesota and Paul (Cynthia) Krull of
Northwood; step-grandchildren, Erika (James) Livermont,
Christopher Ober, Kristin Engstrom, Peder Engstrom, Jesse
(Erin) Krull, Chad (Allyson) Krull, Benjamin Krull, Katelyn
Krull, Kayla, John and Tara Krull; one
step-great-granddaughter, Emma Livermont; sister-in-law,
Gayle Boutelle of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews as
well as other extended family members and friends.
Doyle was preceded in
death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy;
granddaughter, Carrie Joy Forland; and a brother, Don
Boutelle.

Linda Lee Tucker
September 30, 2009
Linda Lee Tucker, 58, of Northwood, died on Monday,
September 21, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa
in Mason City.
At this time no service
will take place. As per her request, cremation has taken
place. The Conner Colonial Chapel is in charge of the
arrangements.
Linda Lee Tucker, was born
on September 24, 1950 in San Francisco, California, the
daughter of Milton and Wanda (King) Tucker. She graduated
from high school in the bay area in California and attended
junior college. Linda worked as a technician for 30 years
for Pac Bell Telephone Company in the Bay area until her
retirement, moving to Northwood in 2003.
Linda loved horses,
gardening and the outdoors and was an avid photographer.
Those left to cherish her
memory are her mother, Wanda King of Northwood; her brother,
Daniel (Joanne) Tucker of Northwood; special friends, Geno
Buttafoco of San Francisco, California and Gene LaChapelle
of St. Ansgar; as well as extended family members and
friends.
Her father, Milton Tucker,
preceded Linda in death.

Helen Joan Latch
Nelson-Carroll

Helen Joan Latch Nelson-Carroll, died peacefully and quietly
on Monday, September 28, 2009, after a lengthy battle with
cancer.
A memorial service and
celebration of Helen's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on
Friday, October 23, at the St. Francis-in-the-Valley
Episcopal Church in Green Valley.
She was born in LuVerae,
Iowa on August 17, 1922, to George Latch and Mary Barnes,
the first of three children. Helen went to grammar school
and graduated from the Renwick High School in 1940. She
graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in music
and later earned her Masters at the University of
Minnesota-Duluth (her thesis has been used as a reference by
music teachers everywhere). She was married for almost 50
years to Shelby Nelson and they had one daughter, Mary Lynn.
Helen taught music in schools in Iowa and in Duluth,
Minnesota and she was supervisor of music for the Duluth
city schools for a number of years.
During her teaching and
supervisory years, Helen was a featured speaker at many
National Music Educators' conventions, she was elected to
the Minnesota Educators Music Hall of Fame and she developed
a nationally recognized television program for elementary
students. In addition to her educational career, she was an
accomplished pianist, a soprano soloist and an outstanding
choral director.
Helen and Shelby bought
land and built a rustic cabin on Murphy Lake northwest of
Duluth. Helen and Shelby retired to Green Valley, where
Helen immediately became involved in the local music scene,
as a member of the Green Valley Chamber Music Society, as
director of music at St. Francis-in the Valley Episcopal
Church and as director of the Green Valley Community Chorus
for many years.
A few years after Shelby's
death, Helen married Robert Carroll, whom she had met at a
Green Valley Community Chorus rehearsal. They had more than
11 years together, filled with music and travel.
She is survived by her
husband, Bob; her brother, George Keith Latch; her sister,
Nancy (Hank) Hinrichsen; her daughter, Mary Lynn Steele;
grandsons, David and Brian Steele; and great-grandson, Sam
Steele; as well as numerous friends and family members.
