Evelyn Gordon Funeral July 6
Funeral services for O. Evelyn Gordon, 89, of Carpenter, who died on Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center, were held on Saturday, July 6, 2002 at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, with the Rev. Kathy Larson officiating. Evelyn was born in Montpelier, North Dakota on February 28, 1913, the fourth daughter of Bendick and Hilda (Erickson) Holstad. She was baptized April 27, 1913 at Montpelier Lutheran Church. At five years of age she moved with her parents to a farm west of Northwood and was confirmed at Shell Rock Lutheran Church, west of Northwood. She graduated from Northwood High School in 1932 and went on to teach in the Hartland and Grove Township rural schools for five years.

Evelyn married Roy Gordon on June 13, 1937 at Deer Creek Lutheran Church Carpenter. They have two sons and two daughters.

Evelyn was active in Deer Creek Lutheran Church choir and small groups, taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years, held many offices in women's circle and aid, and was financial secretary of the church.

Roy and Evelyn lived in Carpenter their entire married life. except for a few years spent working the Gordon farm. She was employed by the United States Government for 20 years at the Carpenter post office, serving as Post Master for eight years. While raising her family, she was a substitute teacher in the Carpenter Consolidated School District.

Evelyn was a lifelong learner, historian, card shark, crossword puzzler, fisherwoman and traveler. During her last years spent in St. Ansgar, she enjoyed her old and newfound friends at the St. Ansgar Senior Center. Her greatest passion was being surrounded by family and friends.

Evelyn is survived by two sons, Robert and Sharon (Hanson) Gordon of Spirit Lake, and Bruce and Carol (Severson) Gordon of Grundy Center; two daughters, Mrs. John (Ruth) Rollefson of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Mrs. Ken (Marjean) Hoeg of Prior Lake, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; one brother, Aldon Holstad, Glenville; five sisters, Mrs. Jewel (Lillian) Thompson of North
wood; Mrs. Curtis (Luella) Leidal of Northwood; Mrs. Leon (Burnette) Sanderson of Glenville; Mrs. Max (Mildred) Patterson of St. Ansgar; Mrs. Stan (Idena) Hagen of Plymouth, Minnesota; and Dorothy Holstad, sister-in-law of Austin, Minnesota.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, parents, two brothers, Marvin and Irving Holstad, and two sisters, Gilma Holstad and Julia Stumo.
Burial was at Deer Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

Al Maxwell funeral

July 20, 2002

Richard Alan Maxwell, age 67, of Osage, died Saturday July 13, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa in Mason City. Al was born June 10, 1935, at Fairfield, IA, the son of Ralph and Mildred (Freshwater) Maxwell. He attended school in Fairfield, and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1953. He attended Parsons College in Fairfield where he received his Bachelor's Degree. He was united in marriage to Shirley Harrison on November 27, 1955, at the First Christian Church in Fairfield. Al taught school and coached one year at Traer, IA, and then moved to Osage in 1959 where he taught 7th grade Life Science and 9th grade Physical Science, along with coaching 7th grade football and boys basketball for a time. Al retired from teaching in 1993. He loved to golf, and spend time with his family and friends. Al was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osage.
Funeral services were held Tuesday July 16, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Interment will be at the Osage Cemetery.
SURVIVED BY: Wife: Shirley Maxwell of Osage. Daughters: Susan Maxwell of Monroeville, PA; Shari Wells and her husband Jay of Marengo, IA, and their children Alyssa, Ryan, and Scott; Cynthia Johnson and her husband Tracy of Osage and their children, Steven, Christopher, Courtney; and Lindsey James and her husband Jeremy. 1 Sister: Carol Nemgar of Eveleth. MN.
PRECEDED BY: His parents; 1 son Mark Alan Maxwell; 1 brother-in-law Fred "Fritz" Nemgar.

Margaret Eske Funeral July 27

July 27, 2002

Funeral services for Margaret Eske, 89, of St. Ansgar, who died on July 24, 2002, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, will be held on Saturday, July 27 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Rock Township, with Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating. Visitation will be after 12 noon at the church on Saturday.
Margaret was born on August 1, 1912 in Scarsboro, Iowa to George Glenn and Evelyn (Talbot) Bowen. She graduated from William Penn College in 1934 with a teaching degree. Margaret married Roland Eske on April 4, 1937 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Township.
Margaret taught in the St. Ansgar School system for 17 years. She was church organist for 50 years and was involved in the music programs at St. John's. She was a farm wife and wonderful mother and grandmother.
Margaret is survived by her daughters, Phyllis Knight and  husband Jerry of Anchorage, Alaska, and Clarice Earles of Rochester, Minnesota; Charlotte Billings and husband Steve of Rochester, Minnesota; Marilyn Stelter and husband Dennis of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Ralph Bowen and son-in-law Richard A. Earles.
Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Dorothy Mae Ruehlow

July 27, 2002

Dorothy Mae Ruehlow, age 89, of Osage died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage. Dorothy was born on August 29. 1912 in Kerkhoven, MN., the daughter of Thomas and Lillian (Shoars) Beck. She was baptized November 30, 1917 and was confirmed June 19, 1927 at the Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven. MN. She graduated in May of 1931 from the Osage High School. On June 14, 1933, Dorothy was united in marriage to Walter Ruehlow at her parent's farm northwest of Osage. They made their home on a farm near Osage, where they farmed for 60 years, until moving to Osage in 1994. During their retirement, Walt and Dorothy enjoyed spending their winters in Florida. Walter died August 30, 2001. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage. She sang in the church choir for many years. She was treasurer of May Country School for many years and also was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed her hobbies, painting, making afghans, quilting, and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren and attending their sporting events.
Funeral services were held Friday. July 26, 2002, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiating. Interment was at the Osage Cemetery.
Survived by: Son: Charles Ruehlow and his wife Lois of Osage and their sons Darwin, Terry, Steve, Michael, and James; Daughter: Janice Duenow of Osage and her daughters Laura Duenow and Janelle Dokken, and 15 great grandchildren.
Preceded by: Parents; Husband Walter in 2001. 4 brothers and one sister.

Alice Kirchgatter Smith Dies At Kansas

July 27, 2002

Doris Hanson of Northwood received word of the death of her sister, Alice Kirchgatter Smith of Coffeeville, Kansas on July 12.
Alice had moved to Kansas with her son. Darryl and wife Edie about four years ago and had been a resident of the Medical Lodge Nursing home most of the time since.
Alice was also a sister of Ruth Kitchgatter Braun of Waterloo; Lloyd Kirchgatter of Tracy, California and LaVerne Kirchgatter of Mason City.
Services will be held in Manteca, California.
