Charlene F.
Bromley, 69, formerly of Osage,
went to be with our Lord on
Sunday, May 2, 2004, in her
home, following a courageous
battle with cancer.
Funeral services
were held on Thursday, May 6, at
the First Lutheran Church, with
Rev. Kay Slocum of the First
Lutheran Church and Rev. Dennis
Hanson of the Our Savior’s
Lutheran Church in Osage
officiating. Graveside services
and interment was in the Dubuque
Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Charlene was born
on April 3, 1935 in Bellevue,
Iowa. She was an insurance agent
for Farm Bureau for 15 years.
She was an active member of the
First Lutheran Church and a
former member of the Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church in
Osage.
She loved to
crochet, trap shoot, hunt,
garden, liked horses and
especially spending time with
her grandchildren.
Survivors include
four children, Janet Saunders
and husband, Galen of Maquoketa,
Dennis MacInerney of Osage, Deb
Gillen-Hauri and husband, Roy of
Lancaster, Wisconsin and Lori
MacInerney of Cedar Rapids; a
sister, Luanne Gohlmann of
Maquoketa; five grandchildren;
two step-grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; and three
step-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; two
brothers; one sister; and a
daughter, Susan MacInerney.

Owana M. Minor

Owana Margaret
Minor, age 95, of Riceville,
passed away on Tuesday, May 4,
2004, at the Riceville Community
Rest Home.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, May 8, at
the First Congregational United
Church of Christ. The Reverend
Gale Richards and Reverend Gary
Gilbert officiated. Burial was
in the Riverside Cemetery,
Riceville.
Owana Minor, was
born on December 26, 1908 in
Riceville, Iowa, to James W. and
Olive Coyer Benson. Ten days
after her birth and the passing
of her mother, Owana was raised
by Charles and Ada Root and
their daughters, Fannie and
Velma, until she was 16 years
old. Owana graduated from the
Riceville High School in 1926.
On November 5, 1927, Owana was
united in marriage to Harry D.
Minor in Riceville. She was an
active member of the Riceville
and David communities. Owana was
a homemaker and helped her
husband in farming.
Her survivors
include two daughters, Barbara
Lenth and her husband, Dale of
Riceville and Margaret Scott of
Des Moines, Iowa; nine
grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren; three
great-great-grandchildren; a
half sister, Bernice Wright of
Santa Ana, California; and a
special niece, Anita Minnis of
Riceville.
She was preceded
in death by her husband, Harry;
one granddaughter; and one
great-granddaughter.

Alvina J. Brown

Alvina J. Brown,
age 89, of Stacyville, died on
Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at the
Stacyville Community Nursing
Home in Stacyville, Iowa,
following a long struggle with
Parkinson's disease.
A Memorial Mass
was celebrated on Saturday, May
8, at the Visitation Catholic
Church, Stacyville. The Reverend
Mark Reasoner officiated. Burial
was in the Visitation Cemetery,
Stacyville.
Alvina J. Brown,
was born on April 20, 1915 in
Randolph, Nebraska, to James and
Anna (Gubbels) Reding. As a
young girl of four she moved
with her family to a farm south
of Stacyville. She attended the
Visitation School in Stacyville
and graduated in 1933. On
November 23, 1937, she was
united in marriage to Adrian B.
Brown of Stacyville in a double
wedding ceremony with her twin
sister. They lived on a farm
southeast of Stacyville where
she became a full-time partner
in agriculture, milking, raising
hogs and operating a
7,000-chicken laying barn.
Alvina enjoyed
many activities, dancing,
playing cards, bowling,
quilting, growing flowers,
leading 4-H groups and playing
golf. She excelled at all,
especially golf, where she
managed to do what most golfers
dream of and got a hole in one,
not once, but twice. Alvina's
faith was important to her. She
was a member of the ACCW
(Christian Mothers), Lady
Foresters and her parish circle.
To cherish her
memory are her children, Robert
(Christina) Brown of Glendora,
California, Mary (John) Blong of
Bettendorf, Edward (Deborah) of
Cedar Rapids, and Joseph (Sally)
Brown of Stacyville;
grandchildren, Thomas (Debby)

Virgil LaVerne
Haganman, age 68, of Wapello,
Iowa, died on Wednesday morning,
May 5, 2004, at the Mercy
Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, May 8, at
the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral
Home at Wapello, with Mr. Tim
Sullivan officiating. Burial
followed in the Parsons
Cemetery.
Virgil Haganman,
was born on December 12, 1935 at
Swedesburg, the son of Robert
and Eva Lee Haganman. He married
Margery Ehrlich on May 31, 1959
at Fairfield. Virgil graduated
from the Birmingham High School.
He then served in the U.S. Army
from 1954 to 1956. He attended
the Northeast Missouri State
Teacher's College and received
his Bachelor of Science in
Education and later completed
his Master's Degree in
Industrial Education. Virgil
taught for 30 years in the
Wapello Community School
District teaching Power
Mechanics, Industrial Arts,
Driver's Education and Junior
High Social Studies and English.
After his retirement in 1991, he
owned and operated the Haganman
Garage.
He enjoyed auto
mechanics and also playing
cards. However, most important
to him was his family,
especially his grandchildren.
Virgil was
preceded in death by his
parents; a sister, Doris; and
three infant siblings.
His survivors
include his wife, Margery; two
sons, Dr. Mark and Nancy
Haganman of Osage and Drs. Chris
and Kari Haganman of Solon;
seven grandchildren, Kyle, Matt,
Katie, Jenna, Jordan, Kirk and
Luke; two brothers, George
Haganman of Mt. Pleasant and
Roger and Janet Haganman of
Stockport; nieces, nephews and
many close friends.
A Memorial Fund
has been established for a
Scholarship Fund at the Wapello
High School and for the Wapello
Rescue Unit.

Kenneth K. Schaa,
age 66, of Osage and formerly of
Patterson, California, died on
Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at the
Mitchell County Regional Health
Center Hospice Unit in Osage.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, May 10, at
the Champion-Bucheit Funeral
Home in Osage. The Reverend
Christian F. Gugel officiated.
Interment was in the Osage
Cemetery.
Kenneth Schaa,
was born on February 14, 1938 at
Hartley, Iowa, the son of Marvin
and Bessie (Knicker) Schaa.
Kenneth graduated from the
Hartley High School. On October
8, 1960, he was united in
marriage to Alice Mae Diesburg
at La Mesa, California. Kenneth
owned and operated AMS Metal
Products in California until his
retirement. His interests
included fishing and attending
his grandchildren's activities.
Kenneth is
survived by his wife, Alice
Schaa of Osage; three sons,
Scotty Schaa and his girlfriend,
Marce Slazas of Patterson,
California and his sons, Joshua
and Dana Schaa; Troy Schaa and
his wife, Karen of Turlock,
California and children, Troy II
and Patricia Schaa; Guy Schaa
and his wife, Barbara Schaa of
Patterson, California and
children, Brandy, Brooke and
Dalton Schaa.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; and one
stepbrother, Charles Schaa.

Alice Norby

Alice Norby, age
94, of Osage, passed away on
Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at the
Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, May 8, at
the Rock Creek Lutheran Church,
Osage, with Rev. R. Dawson
Tornes officiating. Interment
was in the Rock Creek Cemetery.
Alice was born on
March 16, 1910, on the family
farm in Cedar Township in
Mitchell County, Iowa, the
daughter of George and Olava
(Finsand) Moe. She grew up in
the Rock Creek area, attended
country schools and graduated
from the Osage High School in
May, 1928. She took her normal
training at the Cedar Valley
Seminary in Osage. She taught
school in the Rock Creek area.
Alice was united in marriage to
Herbert Norby on September, 6,
1933, at the Rock Creek Lutheran
Church in Meroa and they made
their home on the family farm in
rural Osage. She has resided at
the Faith Lutheran Home since
September 1990.
Alice was a life
member of the Rock Creek
Lutheran Church, where she was
confirmed in 1924. She was
active in teaching Sunday
School, Ladies Aid and Bible
Study Circle.
Alice is survived
by her husband, Herbert Norby of
Osage; two daughters, Joan
Jacobs and her husband, Frank of
Osage and Marlys Smith and her
husband, Will of Germantown,
Tennessee; two sons, Marvin
Norby and his wife, Edna and
Dean Norby and his wife, Jane,
all of Osage; 10 grandchildren;
and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; three
brothers, Olvin Moe, Clarence
Moe and Edward Moe; and one
sister, Mabel Moe.
The

Hazel Johnson
May 12, 2004
Hazel Johnson,
age 77, of Osage, died on
Thursday, May 6, 2004, at the
Osage Rehabilitation and Health
Care Center, where she had
resided for over 30 years.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, May 10, at
the Osage Rehabilitation and
Health Care Center. The Reverend
Roy Ott officiated. Interment
was in the Osage Cemetery.
Hazel was the
youngest of five children, born
to Gustave Sigfrid and Hulda
Marie Johnson on January 20,
1927 in Chicago, Illinois. When
she was 18 years of age she
suffered severe depression after
the death of both parents. She
never fully recovered from her
illness and spent many years in
nursing facilities such as the
Osage Rehabilitation and Health
Care Center.
Hazel is survived
by a niece, Linda Moskalski of
Fort Mill, South Carolina.
The

Christian "Chris"
Miller, age 90, of Ashby,
Minnesota, died on Thursday, May
6, 2004, as the result of a fire
at his home.
A memorial
service will be held at 1:30
p.m., on Monday, May 17, at the
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in
Osage, Iowa. Gary Gilbert will
be officiating. Burial will be
in the Osage City Cemetery,
Osage. A gathering of family and
friends will be held from 12:30
p.m. to 1:00 p.m. before the
service.
Christian Miller,
was born on July 3, 1913 in St.
Paul, Minnesota, to Carl and
Helga (Bang) Miller. The family
moved to Osage, Iowa, when he
was a baby. He grew up near
Mitchell, Iowa, where he
attended school. Throughout his
younger years he worked at
different farm jobs. Later he
took over his dad's farm near
Stacyville, Iowa, to help his
brothers out. He moved back to
Mitchell, Iowa, where he farmed
and worked at Armour & Company
(formerly Decker & Sons) at
Mason City, Iowa, for 25 years
taking early retirement when the
plant closed. He then began
milking cows and working for
different farms in the Mitchell
area.
On September 13,
1964, he married Leanna Wigant
at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua, Iowa. They had two
children, Karl and Laura. In
1979, they moved to the Ashby,
Minnesota, area where he farmed
and milked cows until a near
fatal tractor accident in 1986.
He continued to farm until
renting the farm out in 1999. He
loved to be in his garden and
lived for his grandchildren. He
loved them all so much.
His survivors
include his wife, Leanna of
Ashby, Minnesota; children, Karl
(Darlane) Miller of Battle Lake,
Minnesota and Laura (Paul)
Heitke of Breckenridge,
Minnesota; three stepchildren,
Dawn Young of Osage, Wanda Quam
of Texas and Bruce (Wendi)
Alderman of Charles City; 12
grandchildren, Benjamin,
Kristina, Candie, Kaitlyn, Luke,
Erica, Erin, Brandon, Jesse,
Christian, Ethan and Myckaela;
one great-grandchild, Chadler;
two sisters, Annie Pajer of
Osage and Helga Nemeth of St.
Ansgar; and a brother, Kenneth
Goplerud of St. Ansgar.
Christian was
preceded in death by his
parents, Carl and Helga Miller;
step-mother, Gina Miller; two
sisters, Elfrieda Uzlik and Irma
Weldin; and four brothers, Hans
and Lawrence Miller and Linton

Mildred Christine
Feldt, 88, of Mason City, Iowa,
formerly of St. Ansgar, died on
Saturday, May 8, 2004, at the
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services
were held at 10:30 a.m., on
Wednesday, May 12, at the First
Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar,
with the Rev. Robert Porisch
officiating. Burial was in the
Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St.
Ansgar.
Mildred married
Edward A. Feldt in 1934 and to
this union, one son and three
daughters were born. They owned
and operated elevators in
Carpenter, Meltonville and St.
Ansgar for many years, until
they sold out and purchased the
Benson farm south of St. Ansgar,
where they farmed for many years
before retiring and moving into
St. Ansgar. After she lost
Edward in 1980, she and Suzie
stayed in St. Ansgar until 1990
when they moved to Mason City to
be closer to her other daughter.
Mildred was a
very loving and devoted mother
and spent 64 years of her life
caring for her disabled daughter
"Suzie" until she lost her in
June of 2001. She had such a
beautiful and special bond with
each one of her children. She
loved watching all kinds of
sports, especially her Iowa
"Hawkeyes." She also liked Bingo
and puzzles.
Left to cherish
her memory are her son, William
Feldt of Albany, Missouri;
daughters, Sherlyn Phares of
Escondido, California and Donna
Jamison of Mason City; nine
grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren; three
sisters-in-law, Marion Feldt,

Robert W. Minnis

Robert W. Minnis,
age 90, of Osage, died on
Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at the
Mitchell County Regional Health
Center Hospice Unit.
Memorial services
were held on Thursday, May 13,
at the United Church of Christ
in Osage, with Rev. Robert
Melhorn officiating. Inurnment
will be in the Riverside
Cemetery in Riceville at a later
date. It was Robert's wish to
donate his body to the Des
Moines University Osteopathic
College to further future
doctor's learning and skills.
Memorials may be directed to the
Faith Lutheran Home in Osage or
the United Church of Christ in
Osage.
Robert was born
on November 27, 1913, on the
family farm near Riceville, the
son of Arthur and Ethel (Barker)
Minnis. He graduated from the
Riceville High School in 1931
and from Hamilton Business
College in Mason City in 1960.
Robert was united in marriage to
Allene McCord on July 6, 1940,
at Allene's parent's home in
Iowa Falls. Robert farmed with
his father, Arthur, from 1934 to
1955. He worked as a bookkeeper
at the Olson Motor Company from
1960 to 1982, at Cooper's Osage
Chrysler for a short time and at
Paul's Plumbing and Heating for
ten years until 1999.
Robert enjoyed
antique tractors and cars, and
the company of relatives and
friends. He was a member of the
United Church of Christ in
Osage.
He is survived by
his wife, Allene (McCord) Minnis
of Osage; two sons, William
Minnis and his wife, Debbie of
Shepherd, Michigan and Frank
Minnis and his wife, Sara of Des
Moines; one daughter, Sara
Krueger and her husband, James
of Neenah, Wisconsin; eight
grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; and many
nieces and nephews.
Robert was
preceded in death by his
parents; his son, Bruce Minnis;
a grandson, Nathan Krueger; one
brother, Roy Minnis; and two
sisters, Isabelle Coleman and
Anna McClanahan.

Darwin L. Fossey

Darwin L. Fossey,
78, of St. Ansgar, died on
Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the
Good Samaritan Center, St.
Ansgar.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, May 17, at
the First Lutheran Church in St.
Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert
Porisch officiating. Burial was
in the First Lutheran Cemetery
in St. Ansgar, with military
rights by the American Legion
Post #358 of St. Ansgar.
Darwin Lowell
Fossey, was born on February 12,
1926 in rural Stacyville, Iowa,
the son of Alf Oswald and Amanda
Mary (Nelson) Fossey. He was
baptized at the Six Mile Grove
Lutheran Church, Lyle,
Minnesota, on March 16, 1926 and
confirmed at the St. Peter's
Lutheran Church, Toeterville,
Iowa on March 17, 1940. He
graduated from the St. Ansgar
High School in 1944. He was
inducted into the United States
Navy in July of 1944, and served
his country at Treasure Island,
California and San Jose,
California for two years during
World War II. Following his
honorable discharge in 1946, he
returned to northern Iowa and
purchased the garage in
Toeterville, which he operated
as Fossey Garage for 57 years
until October of 2003.
On September 23,
1950, he married Betty Cummings
at the Methodist Church in
Austin, Minnesota. To this union
two daughters were born, Sherry
and Julaine. He enjoyed fishing
in northern Minnesota and
Canada, woodworking, playing
cribbage, spending time with his
family including his
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren and being
with friends. He was a member of
the First Lutheran Church in St.
Ansgar.
Left to cherish
his memory is his wife, Betty,
of St. Ansgar; one daughter,

Rose Weber, age 76, of
Stacyville, died on Monday, May
17, 2004, at the Hospice Room of
the Stacyville Community Nursing
Home, after a courageous battle
with cancer.
Funeral services
will be held at 11:00 a.m., on
Thursday, May 20, at the
Visitation Catholic Church in
Stacyville, with Father Mark
Reasoner officiating. Interment
will be in the Visitation
Cemetery in Stacyville.
Visitation is from 4:30 p.m. to
7:30 p.m., on Wednesday, at the
Visitation Catholic Church in
Stacyville, where there will be
a Scripture Service at 6:30 p.m.
Visitation will continue one
hour before the services at the
church on Thursday.
"Butch" was born
on December 20, 1927 in
Stacyville, the daughter of Ben
and Mary (Wingert) Adams. She
was married to Edmund Mathew
Weber on May 14, 1946 at the
Visitation Catholic Church in
Stacyville. To this union was
born three children, four
grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. In her
early years, she was employed at
Pitzen Produce in Stacyville and
later worked at Fox River Mills
in Osage.
"Butch" enjoyed
fishing, crocheting, latch hook
and spending time at home with
family.
Her survivors
include three sons, Denny Weber
and his wife, Linda of Cedar
Rapids and their children,
Nicole Kemp and her husband,
Cory, Chad Weber and his wife,
Jamie; Tom Weber of Robins; Don
Weber and his wife, Sue of
Stacyville and their children,
Jackie Hanna and her husband,

Lonergan, age 87, passed away on
Thursday, May 20, 2004, in
Montica, California.
He was born near
Brownsdale, in Mower County on
February 25, 1916.
Charles married
Carol Olson on February 23, 1945
in Mason City, Iowa. To this
union was born two children,
Cindy Ferril and Frank. He was
in the Navy and lived in Iowa,
Minnesota, California and on
naval bases.
His survivors
include a daughter, Cindy
Ferril; three grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; two sisters,
Bertha Flatness and Dora
Weiland; two brothers, Neil
Lonergan and Mahlon Lonergan;
and nieces and nephews.
Preceding Charles
in death were his parents, Lloyd
and Tillie Lonergan; two
sisters, Ila Ebbers and Maxaline

Billie Stanley,
age 81, of Newton, formerly of
Spirit Lake, Iowa, died on
Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the
Park Centre Care Center in
Newton, Iowa.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, May 25, at
the First Methodist Church,
Newton, Iowa. The Reverend Mary
Schnepf, assistant pastor
officiated. Burial was in the
Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.
Billie Stanley,
was born in Spirit Lake, Iowa,
on December 19, 1922, to William
F. and Clara A. Pfeiffer
Barrett. She graduated from the
Spirit Lake High School in
Spirit Lake, Iowa in 1940 and
was also a graduate of Iowa
State University in Ames, Iowa.
Billie was a registered
dietitian and worked as an
inspector for the Jasper County
Health Department.
She was a member
of the First United Methodist
Church, where she sang in the
choir for 40 years and taught
Sunday School for many years, a
member and past president of the
PEO Chapter LC, member and past
president of the Jasper County
Historical Museum and past
president of the YMCA Board and
member of the Skiff Hospital
Auxiliary. She enjoyed her
flower gardens, doing
needlepoint and antiquing. Most
of all she loved to be with her
family.
Her survivors
include her husband, Robert of
Newton; a son and
daughter-in-law, David (Lori)
Stanley of Osage; daughter and
son-in-law, Susan (Tim) Morrison
of Altoona; four grandchildren;
two sisters and brother-in law,
Marie Barrett of Spirit Lake and
Helen (Ed) Edmondson of Ames,
Iowa; and several nieces and
nephews.
Billie was
preceded in death by her
parents.
Memorials may be
made to the Barn Project of the
Jasper County Historical Museum
and may be left at the Wallace
Family Funeral Home or at the
church.
The Wallace
Family Funeral Home in Newton,
Iowa, had charge of the
arrangements.

Edmund "Ed"
McCarthy, formerly of the New
Haven area, died on Saturday,
May 22, 2004, at the Cedarview
Care Center, Owatonna,
Minnesota.
A
Mass of Christian Burial was
held on Tuesday, May 25, at 2:00
p.m., at the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church, with Rev. Peter
Klein officiating. Interment
followed in the Sacred Heart
Cemetery.
Ed was born on
November 16, 1913 in Douglas
Township, to Henry and Allie
(Schweiger) McCarthy. He was a
member of the graduating class
of 1931 at the New Haven High
School in New Haven, Iowa. He
married Magdalene Gray on
September 6, 1939, at the Sacred
Heart Church in Owatonna. Ed
worked at Jostens Manufacturing
Co., Owatonna, until 1947 when
he and his brother-in-law, Merle
Gasner started a plumbing
contracting business and named
the business Gasner and Mac
Plumbing and Heating. Ed became
sole owner in 1973 and renamed
the business McCarthy Plumbing
and Heating. He continued to run
the business along with his two
sons until 1977 when Ed retired.
Ed then sold the business to his
sons, Jack and the late Larry
McCarthy.
He was a member
of the Owatonna Knights of
Columbus, Elk's Catholic Order
of Foresters and golf league at
Brooktree. His life interests
included dancing, bowling,
golfing, watching the Owatonna
Aces, playing cards, fishing and
spending time with his wife and
family.
Ed is survived by
his wife of 65 years; children,
Jack and Judy McCarthy of
Owatonna, Patrick and Shirley
McCarthy of Waseca, Jan and Russ
Bower of Owatonna, Dan McCarthy
of Owatonna, Cathie and Jack
Butler of Crawfordville,
Florida, Carol and Jim Huntoon
of Excelsior, Philip and Tracy
of Aurora, Illinois and
daughter-in-law, Karen McCarthy
of Lakeville; 18 grandchildren;
nine great-grandchildren;
brother, Tom and Dorothy
McCarthy of McIntire, Iowa;
sisters, Marian Pitzen of Osage,
Mary and Lynn King of

Thornton of Austin, Patricia
Detrick of Dallas, Texas,

Ed was preceded
in death by sons, Dennis in 1972

Delia Jewett
June 2, 2004
Delia Jewett,
long time Osage resident, died
on Wednesday, May 26, 2004,
after a total hip replacement in
early February.
Following the
death of her husband, Clifford,
a county civil engineer, she
traveled visiting her sons and
families, Dwight in Connecticut,
Darrell (December 2001) in
Hawaii and California and
Raymond living in Europe and the
Middle East where he was on
assignment for his company.
She made her home
in Venice, on the Florida gulf
coast and was active in hospital
volunteer service where she
accrued over 20,000 hours with
the Bon Secours Venice Medical
Center.

Roberta M. Pelleymounter

Roberta M.
Pelleymounter, age 78, of Osage,
died on Wednesday, May 26, 2004,
at the Mitchell County Regional
Health Center-Hospice Unit in
Osage.
A Mass of
Christian Burial was held on
Saturday, May 29, at the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Osage,
with Rev. Mark Reasoner
officiating. Interment was in
the Sacred Heart Catholic
Cemetery, Osage.
Roberta was born
on October 7, 1925 in Colwell,
the daughter of Leo and Minnie
(Herzog) Smith. She graduated
from the Immaculate Conception
High School in Charles City. On
June 17, 1946, she was united in
marriage to Robert Pelleymounter
in Charles City. They lived in
Osage their entire married life.
Robert died in 1989. Roberta was
employed at Salsbury in Charles
City, then Pfaltzgraff Plumbing
and Heating in Osage and for 27
years as a radio dispatcher for
the Osage Police Department and
then the Mitchell County
Communications Center, retiring
in 1999.
Roberta was a
member of the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church, the Ladies
Guild and the Covenant Choir.
She belonged to the Osage
American Legion Auxiliary and
the Osage VFW Auxiliary. She
enjoyed playing 500 and Bridge
with her family and lady
friends. She enjoyed picnics and
breakfasts at Spring Park with
family and friends. Roberta was
very active in her church and
had a strong faith.
Roberta is
survived by four daughters, Ann
(Joe) Longo of Jacksonville,
Florida, Carol Newton of Osage,
Julie (Jeff) Voaklander of Osage
and Dawn (Bill) Johanns of New
Haven; two sons, Gregory (Vandy)
Pelleymounter of Venice, Florida
and Charles (Cindy)
Pelleymounter of Madison,
Wisconsin; 17 grandchildren; one
great-granddaughter; four
sisters, Bernadette Madsen of
Long Beach, California, Betty
Marth of Charles City, Sharon
(Alan) Davidson of Charles City
and Jan Pull of Colorado
Springs, Colorado; and her twin
brother, Bob Smith of Osage.
She was preceded
in death by her parents; and her
husband, Robert Pelleymounter in
1989.
The

Mary E. Johnson,
age 70, of Osage, died on
Thursday, May 27, 2004, at the
Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, June 1, at
the Rock Creek Lutheran Church,
Osage, with Rev. R. Dawson
Tornes officiating. Interment
was in the Rock Creek Cemetery.
Mary was born on
April 12, 1934 at Rockford,
Iowa, the daughter of Luke and
Alberta (Hiltabidel) Collins.
She was educated in schools at
Rockford and Mason City. Mary
was united in marriage to Dean
Johnson on July 5, 1970, at the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason
City. She was employed for many
years as a waitress at the
Troika in Mason City. Mary was a
member of the Rock Creek
Lutheran Church, where she was
involved in Circle, Ladies Aid,
and was a Sunday School teacher.
She enjoyed cake
decorating, shopping, cards,
following her grandchildren's
activities and traveling. Mary
always made you feel welcome.
Her kitchen was always open, as
was her heart, to friends and
family. Mary faced her death as
she did her life - with strength
and fortitude.
Mary is survived
by her husband, Dean Johnson of
Osage; son, David Johnson of
Charles City; daughter, Helen
Burrington and her husband, Ken
of Corwith; grandchildren,
Adrian, Lucas, Eric, Zachary,
Jacob and Laurel;
great-grandson, Mason; a sister,
Michele Guldberg of South Bend,
Indiana; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her parents.

Robert Byrnes
June 9, 2004
Robert Byrnes,
age 54, of Cedar Falls, died on
Friday, May 28, 2004, at the
Satori Memorial Hospital,
Waterloo.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, June 1, at
the Blessed Sacrament Catholic
Church, Waterloo, Iowa. Father
Dennis Juhl officiated and
interment was in the Fairview
Cemetery, Cedar Falls. The
Dahl-Van-Hove School Funeral
Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
Robert was born
on July 20, 1949 in Osage, the
son of Erwin Bernard and JoAnne
Yager Byrnes. He attended the
St. Mary's School in New Haven
and graduated from the Osage
Community Schools, the
University of Northern Iowa in
1971 and earned a Master's
Degree in Music from UNI in
1974. He had taught at UNI since
1972 in the School of Music and
was also an administrative
assistant. He was campus
carilloneur and was director of
the UNI Varsity Men's Glee Club.
Those that
survive him include his mother,
JoAnne of Osage; three brothers,
James of San Diego, California,
Mark and wife, Candace of
Oceanside, California and Casey
Joseph of Alameda, California;
four sisters, Mary Cathryn
Briles of Buhl, Idaho, Patricia
Jo Byrnes of Las Vegas, Nevada
and Dr. Jill Byrnes and husband,
Kevin Lange of Cedar Rapids; and
10 nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in
death was his father; two
brothers, Jonathon and Jason;
and a sister, Molly.

Hans Hveem

Hans Hveem, age
91, of Osage, died on Monday,
May 31, 2004, at the Mitchell
County Regional Health Center
Hospice Unit in Osage.
Funeral services
were held on Thursday, June 3,
at the Our Savior's Lutheran
Church in Osage, with Rev.
Dennis Hanson officiating.
Interment was in the Osage
Cemetery.
Hans was born on
May 11, 1913 near Wolf Point,
Montana, the son of Nels and
Julia (Rosie) Hveem. Hans was
united in marriage to Joyce
Paulson on June 4, 1939 in
Osage. Hans started farming in
Cedar Township, Mitchell County,
later moving to the family farm
six miles north of Osage,
retiring and moving to Osage in
1981. In addition to his
farming, he did custom
combining, corn shelling and
trucking in the surrounding
area.
Hans was a member
of the Our Savior's Lutheran
Church. He enjoyed watching TV,
sports and fishing.
He is survived by
his wife, Joyce Hveem of Osage;
two sons, Gary Hveem and his
wife, Frances of Rio Rancho, New
Mexico and Howard Hveem of Cedar
Falls; one daughter, Marcia
Dedic and her husband, Bill of
Waterloo; three grandchildren,
Todd Hveem and his wife, Jacque
of The Woodlands, Texas,
Jennifer Jennings and her
husband, Rick of Coralville and
Joshua Hveem and his wife, Debra
of Coralville; two
step-grandchildren, Christopher
Dedic of Waterloo and Melissa
