Barbara Joyce Wright, 46, of
Osage, died on Tuesday, October
1, 2002, at the St. Mary's
Hospital in Rochester,
Minnesota.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, October
5, at the Our Savior's Lutheran
Church in Osage. The Reverend
Dennis Hanson and Reverend Roy
Ott officiated. Cremation
followed the services.
She was born on
February 12, 1956 in Osage, the
daughter of Muriel Jeffries and
Lionel Olson. She was educated
in the Osage Schools and
graduated from the Osage High
School in 1974. She then
attended the University of
Northern Iowa and graduated from
the Waterloo College of Men's
Hairstyling. Barbara was united
in marriage to Herbert Wright on
October 27, 1979, at the United
Methodist Church in Osage. They
made their home in Osage, where
she owned and operated a
barbershop until the birth of
their son, Chris.
She was employed
at Fox River Mills for several
years and was a homemaker the
past 12 years. In 2000, Barbara
returned to complete her
education at NIACC. She was a
member of the Our Savior's
Lutheran Church, PEO, the Order
of the Eastern Star and the
American Legion Auxiliary.
Preceding Barbara
in death were her grandparents;
and an uncle.
She is survived
by her husband, Herb Wright of
Osage; mother, Muriel Jeffries
of Naples, Florida; father,
Lionel Olson of Osage; daughter,
Cassandra Wright of Osage; son,
Christopher Wright of Osage;
five brothers, Douglas Olson and
his wife, Linda of Waterloo,
Richard Olson and his wife,
Carol of Waterloo, Jeffrey Olson
and his wife, Lory of
Hutchinson, Minnesota, William
Olson of Hutchinson, Minnesota
and James Olson of Chicago,
Illinois; three nieces; and two
nephews.

Esther Marie Hartogh, 93, of
Elma, died on Wednesday, October
9, 2002, at the Colonial Manor
in Elma, of natural causes.
A Mass of
Christian Burial, with Rev. John
Hemann officiating, was held on
Saturday, October 12, at the
Immaculate Conception Church in
Elma. Burial was in the Calvary
Cemetery in Riceville.
Esther Marie
Hartogh, was born on February
23, 1909 at Meyer, Iowa, the
daughter of Nicholas John and
Rachael (Goergen) Mueller. She
received her schooling in Meyer.
Esther was united in marriage on
October 6, 1931, to J. Michael
Hartogh in Meyer. Following
their marriage they farmed in
the Mitchell County area until
retiring in 1974, when they
moved to Elma. She was a 4-H
Leader for 25 years and was a
member of the Immaculate
Conception Church in Elma, where
she was an active rosary society
member. Esther enjoyed 4-H
projects, gardening, canning,
sewing and refinishing
furniture.
Preceding her in
death were her parents; husband,
J. Michael; three brothers,
Francis, Raymond and Carl; two
sisters, Rose Durben and Agnes
Bees; and a daughter-in-law,
Sandra Hartogh.

James Arthur Myers

James Arthur Myers, 71, of
Belleview, Florida, died on
Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at
Summerfield, Florida. His body
was cremated.
Graveside
services, with full military
honors were held on Saturday,
October 26, at the Highland
Cemetery in Iola, Kansas.
James was born on
July 9, 1931 in Osage, Iowa, to
Doan and Ruth Parker Myers. He
grew up in Osage and graduated
from the Osage High School.
Myers served in the U.S. Navy
during the Korean War for four
years. On April 12, 1955, he
married Geri Arndt of Osage. He
graduated from the University of
Iowa in 1960 with a degree in
marketing and business
administration, then worked as a
salesman and later as an
independent truck driver before
his retirement. The couple moved
to Iola, Kansas, in 1973 from
Watertown, Connecticut. They
retired to Florida in 1995.
Myers was a
member of the Iola American
Legion and the Veterans of
Foreign Wars in Belleview.
Survivors include
his wife; son, Jim of Iola;
daughter, Jackie Thompson of
Iola; seven grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.
The Waugh-Yokum &
Friskel Memorial Chapel had
charge of the arrangements.

Dianne Irene Lowe

Dianne Irene Lowe, 56, died on
Thursday, October 10, 2002, at
the Good Shepherd Health Center
in Mason City.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, October
12, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore
Colonial Chapel in Mason City.
The Rev. Paul Finger of the St.
Paul Lutheran Church officiated.
Cremation followed the services
with inurnment at a later date
in the Manly Cemetery.
The family
requested that memorial
contributions be made to St.
Paul Lutheran Church in Mason
City in her memory.
Dianne Irene
Lowe, was born on January 7,
1946 in Osage, the daughter of
Mervin and Irene (Roberts)
Muller. She received her
education in the Orchard and
Osage Community Schools. Dianne
spent several years at
Opportunity Village in Clear
Lake. She was united in marriage
to Don Lowe in 1979, in Jackson,
South Dakota. He preceded her in
death in 1997. After their
marriage they made their home in
an apartment in Mason City and
they both entered the Good
Shepherd Health Center in Mason
City in 1995.
Dianne babysat
for various families in the
Mason City area and also loved
and enjoyed children. She had a
very strong faith and was a
member of the St. Paul Lutheran
Church in Mason.
Preceding her in
death were her mother, Irene in
1971; husband, Don in 1997; and
her sister, Kay in 1995.
Survivors include
her father, Mervin Muller and
step-mother, Phyllis Muller of
Nora Springs; three
step-brothers, Daryl Roberts of
Omaha, Nebraska, Jerry Roberts
and Keith Roberts, both of
Britt; a step-sister, Karen
Roberts of Grapevine, Texas;
four step-grandchildren, Leah,
Sonja, Linda and Dustin; two
step-great-grandchildren; and
several aunts, uncles, nieces
and nephews and other relatives
and friends.

Kevin J. Mayer

Kevin J. "Rocky" Mayer, age 51,
of rural Mantorville, Minnesota,
died on Thursday, October 10,
2002, following a courageous
battle with cancer.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, October 14,
with a 10:30 a.m., Mass at the
Holy Family Catholic Church in
Kasson, Minnesota. Reverend
Charlie Collins officiated. The
75th Regiment of the U.S.
Airborne Rangers and the Kasson
Legion accompanied the services.
Kevin was born on
October 15, 1950 in Osage, Iowa.
He grew up in the Stacyville
area and graduated from the
Marian High School, Stacyville
in 1968. From 1970 to 1972, he
served as a Ranger in the U.S.
Airborne in Vietnam, receiving
two Purple Hearts. On August 5,
1972, he married Grace M. Blake
in Johnsburg, Minnesota. Mayer
earned a Bachelor's Degree in
business and accounting from the
University of Wisconsin in La
Crosse in 1979. He was employed
by the Menards Building Centers
for 30 years and lived in
various places in Wisconsin
before moving to rural
Mantorville in 1987. He was
manager of Menards North in
Rochester and was a member of
the Airborne Ranger Association.
He enjoyed woodworking and
sports.
Preceding Mayer
in death were his grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mayer and
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Thome; and
father-in-law, Gene Blake.
His survivors
include his wife, Grace; two
sons, Travis and wife, Sarah of
Rochester and Waylan at home;
one daughter, Michelle and
husband, Kirk Skogebo of Spring
Valley; six grandchildren; his
parents, Gene and Marjorie of

Grace Naoma Earl Lafferty, 89,
died on Friday, October 11,
2002, at the St. Ansgar Good
Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar,
Iowa.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, October 14,
at the St. Ansgar United
Methodist Church. The Rev. Jay
Amundson officiated. A graveside
service was held in the
afternoon, at the Fairview
Cemetery, Oakland, Minnesota.
Grace was born on
August 11, 1913 in Freeborn
County, Minnesota, to Casper and
Lilly (Lerum) Earl. She
graduated from the Austin High
School and Mankato State College
(Minnesota State
University-Mankato) and started
teaching in 1932 in Freeborn
County Country Schools. Earl
taught in Lansing, Lyle and
Hayfield Schools (Brownsdale)
before retirement in 1978. She
lived most of her adult life in
Austin, Minnesota, before moving
to St. Ansgar in 2001. On
December 28, 1939, she married
John D. Lafferty in Austin.
Grace enjoyed
reading and playing bridge. A
special treasure were the memory
of her many trips to Ontario,
Canada to fish with her family
and friends. She was a wonderful
mother, grandmother and aunt and
will be missed by her family.
Preceding her in
death were her husband; parents;
five brothers; and four sisters.
Survivors include
her son, Dr. John D. and Rebecca
Lafferty of St. Ansgar; her
grandchildren, Jill Lafferty and
her husband, Alan Pierce of
Golden Valley, Minnesota and
Anne Lafferty of Minneapolis;
one sister, Anna Arett of
Austin; and nieces, nephews and

61, of Glidden and formerly of
Lawton, died unexpectedly on
Sunday, October 13, 2002, at the
St. Anthony Regional Hospital,
Carroll, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at
7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, October
16, at the First Presbyterian
Church in Glidden. Rev. Dr.
William Skinner, Rev. Mike
Pappadachis and Rev. Betty
Weidert officiated. An
additional service was held at
7:00 p.m., on Thursday October
17, at the Christy-Smith
Morningside Chapel in Sioux
City, with Pastor Bruce Zellmer,
Chaplain of the St. Luke's
Regional Medical Center
officiating. A service was also
held on Friday, October 18, at
the Community Presbyterian
Church in Lawton, with the Rev.
Dr. William Skinner, Rev. Mike
Papppadachis, Rev. Richard

officiating. Interment was in

A son of Kenneth
and Alice (Collins) Peters, he
was born on January 4, 1941 at
Lennox, South Dakota. He married
Lorna Forbes on August 20, 1961,
at the Third Presbyterian Church
in Sioux City, by Rev. Loren
Parker. He attended and
graduated from the Anthon High
School in 1959, Morningside
College in 1963 and from the
Dubuque Theological Seminary in
1967. He received his Doctor of
Ministry Degree from McCormick
Seminary in Chicago in 1983.
Pastor Bob as he was known to
most, served churches in
Bronson, Iowa, Elliot Creek
Presbyterian church as a student
pastor during his Morningside
College years, the Hazel Green
Methodist Church in Hazel Green,
Wisconsin while he was a
seminary student. He then served
as Pastor of Eden Presbyterian
Church at Rudd, Iowa Community
Presbyterian Church of Lawton,
Elliot Creek Presbyterian
Church, Bronson and presently at
the First Presbyterian Church in
Glidden, where he has served for
the past 1½ years. He spent
three years at the Camp and
Conference Center at Zephyr
Point, Nevada, as the
Program/Fund Development
Director prior to coming to
Glidden.
While at the
Lawton-Bronson area Pastor Bob
was the "Voice of the Eagles"
announcing at the football games
and track meets for many years.
He kept score for the basketball
team and drove the team school
bus to away games. He was a
substitute school bus driver and
he was a city council person for
9 years in Lawton. He served for
23 years on the Lawton Fire
Rescue squad. He enjoyed sports,
camping, and interacting with
people.
Survivors include
his wife, Lorna of Glidden; two
daughters, Beverly Logsdon and
her husband, Joe of Sioux City
and Susan Logsdon and her
husband, Jeff of Sioux City;
son, Tim Peters and his wife,
Roxanne of Lawton; eight
grandchildren; sister, Kay

He was preceded

Mayme Ida Orvedal

Mayme Ida Orvedal, 89, of
Northwood, died on Tuesday,
October 15, 2002, at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, October 18,
at the First Lutheran Church in
Northwood, with Reverend Paul
Holmer and Reverend Allan Stoa
officiating. Burial was in the
South Shell Rock Cemetery in
Northwood. The Conner Colonial
Chapel of Northwood was in
charge of the arrangements.
Mayme Ida
Orvedal, was born on April 30,
1913 in Calamus, Iowa, the
daughter of John and Cora
(Bousselot) Dralla. She was
baptized on June 1, 1913, in the
German Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Clinton County and
reaffirmed the faith of her
baptism through confirmation in
the Lutheran faith. She attended
and received her education in
the Northwood Community Schools,
graduating from the Northwood
High School in 1932. She was
united in marriage to John
Orvedal on February 26, 1940 in
Northwood. He preceded her in
death on June 9, 1964. After
their marriage together they
farmed in the Northwood area.
Mayme worked as a
nurse's aid for many years at
the Lutheran Retirement Home in
Northwood until her retirement.
After her retirement she did
volunteer work in the community
and the church.
She enjoyed
crocheting, embroidering,
sewing, being in 4-H, flowers,
plants, music and playing the
piano. She was an active member
of the First Lutheran Church,
the altar guild, and church
circles in Northwood.

her memory are her children and

Lawrence L. Johnson, age 72, of
Osage, died on Friday, October
18, 2002, at the Mitchell County
Regional Health Center in Osage,
from complications of a stroke.
Funeral services
were held at 1:30 p.m., on
Wednesday, October 23, at the
Our Savior's Lutheran Church in
Osage, with the Rev. Dennis
Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott
officiating. Interment was in
the Osage Cemetery. Military
rites were conducted by the
Osage American Legion Post 278.
Lawrence was born
on April 8, 1930 in Rolfe, Iowa,
the son of Vernet and Mildred
(Neilsen) Johnson. He attended
school at Rolfe. He served in
the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.
Lawrence was united in marriage
to Faye Dohlman on January 5,
1955, at the Little Brown Church
in Nashua. They lived and farmed
in the Riceville area and moved
to Osage in 1997. He continued
to help with farming in the New
Haven area and he was noted for
being the neighborhood mechanic.
He was a member of the Our
Savior's Lutheran Church.
Lawrence was
preceded in death by his
parents; one brother, Herb
Johnson; and one granddaughter,
Jodi Oulman in 1995.
His survivors
include his wife, Faye Johnson
of Osage; two daughters, Vickie

Leslie Henry Milton, age 96, of
Osage, passed away on Friday,
October 18, 2002, at the Osage
Rehabilitation and Health Care
Center.
Funeral services

Funeral Home in Osage.
Lay-pastor Gary Gilbert
officiated. Interment was in the
Osage Cemetery.
Leslie was born
on December 23, 1905 near Little
Cedar, the son of Henry and
Agnes (Mitchell) Milton. He grew
up in the Little Cedar area and
attended school at Little Cedar.
He farmed with his father and
his brothers and later with his
wife, Alma. Leslie was united in
marriage to Alma Williams of
Little Cedar on September 17,
1928. They farmed in the Little
Cedar area until retirement and
moved to Osage in 1979. Leslie
also worked for the ASCS for
several years.
Leslie was
preceded in death by his
parents; wife, Alma; daughter,
Joan Pearson and son-in-law,
Paul Pearson; son, Russell
Milton; one grandson, Neal
Pearson; one sister, Laura
Ethen; and one brother, William
Milton.
Milton's
survivors include a
daughter-in-law, Gloria Milton

Lorraine Hartwig Koster

Lorraine Hartwig Koster, age 80,
of St. Ansgar, Iowa, died on
Monday, October 21, 2002, at the
Good Samaritan Center, St.
Ansgar, where she had resided
for the past six years.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, October 25,
at the Immanuel Lutheran Church,
St. Ansgar. Pastor Byron
Northwick officiated. Burial was
in the Newburg Cemetery,
Carpenter, Iowa.
Lorraine was born
on September 3, 1922, to Alvin
and Josephine (Rosenberg)
Ruechel and grew up on a farm
near Carpenter. She graduated
from the Carpenter High School
in 1940. She then married
Raymond Hartwig and lived on the
Hartwig family farm south of
Otranto where they raised six
children.
Lorraine loved
living on the farm where she
grew flowers and had a large
garden. She loved the outdoors
and looked forward to yearly
family fishing trips in northern
Minnesota. Music was a great joy
to her. She looked forward to
participating in "The Messiah"
at Easter and was active in the
church choir. She enjoyed Ladies
Aid and quilting with her fellow
church members.
Raymond Hartwig
passed away in February 1971 and
Lorraine then moved into St.
Ansgar. She married Al Koster in
1973. He passed away in 1993.
Lorraine worked as a waitress at
the Maple Inn Cafe in Osage for
several years where she enjoyed
meeting new people and visiting
with her customers.
Preceding her in
death were her beloved daughter,
Audrey Miller who died on
October 20, 1987; two husbands;
her parents; and brother, Wayne
Ruechel.
The greatest joys
in her life were her faith and
her family. Those thankful for
sharing in her life are her
children, Arlynn of Davenport,
Andy and wife, Susan of
Northwood, Craig and wife, Nancy
of Port Orchard, Washington,
Michael of Des Moines and Connie

Bertha Mullenbach

Bertha Mullenbach, age 106, of
Osage, died on Monday, October
21, 2002, at the Faith Lutheran
Home in Osage.
Funeral services
were held on Friday, October 25,
at the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Osage, Iowa. The
Reverend Philip Recker
officiated. Interment was in the
Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery,
Osage.
Bertha was born
on May 8, 1896 in Stacyville
Township, the daughter of
Nicholas and Helen (Blake)
Huemann. She was united in
marriage to Fred Mullenbach on
February 13, 1917 and they
farmed near Stacyville and Osage
until 1949, when they moved to
Osage where Bertha did housework
for many years. Fred died in
1957. Bertha was able to live in
her own home until the age of
93, when she had surgery. She
then lived with her daughter,
Marce Kisner until she entered
the Faith Lutheran Home in July
1996.
Preceding her in
death were her parents; husband,
Fred; sons, Gervase, Harold and
Melvin; a daughter, Marce; three
brothers; and six sisters.
Bertha is
survived by two sons, Germaine
Mullenbach and wife, Helen of
Ames and LaVerne Mullenbach and
wife, Bonnie of Osage; two
daughters-in-law, Millie
Mullenbach of Osage and Marie
Mullenbach of Tucson, Arizona;
son-in-law, Tim Kisner of Osage;
15 grandchildren; and 24
great-grandchildren.

Funeral services
were held on Saturday, October
26, at the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Osage. The Reverend
Christian F. Gugel officiated.
Interment was in the Osage
Cemetery.
Laurina Perau,
was born on November 17, 1912 in
Rock Township, of Mitchell
County. She was the daughter of
Emil and Selma (Wilde)
Steinberg. She was baptized at
the St. Johns Lutheran Church in
Rock Township on December 15,
1912 and confessed her faith in
Confirmation on May 29, 1927.
Laurina was united in marriage
on November 15, 1936, to Orlan
Perau at the Immanuel Lutheran
Church in St Ansgar. They made
their home on a farm southwest
of Osage. Two children were born
to this union, Margaret and
Marlys Perau. She liked
gardening, her flowers, her
family, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in
death were her husband, Orlan in
1988; and a daughter, Marlys in
1993.
Laurina is
survived by her daughter,
Margaret Hegland and husband,
Paul of Osage; four
granddaughters, Sheryl Nelson
and husband, Alan and their
children, Jacob, Maria and Leah
of St. Ansgar, Sharlene Sorensen
and husband, Fred and their
children, Lezlie and Lyle of
Waltham, Minnesota, Mary Ann
Hudziak and husband, Kevin and
their children, Darren and
Tanner of Wild Rose, Wisconsin,
Marjorie Simpson and husband,
Kevin and their children,
Spencer and Connor of Hudson,
Iowa; one grandson, Merlyn
Hegland of Orchard; one brother,
Edwin Steinberg and his wife,
Maxine of St. Ansgar; and many
nieces and nephews.
The Champion

Ida Emilie Groth
October 30, 2002
Ida Groth, age 101, passed away
on Saturday, October 26, 2002,
at the Good Samaritan Center in
St. Ansgar.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, October
29, at the Immanuel Lutheran
Church, St, Ansgar, Iowa. The
Reverend Byron Northwick
officiated. Burial was in the
Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St.
Ansgar.
Ida Emilie Groth,
was born on June 13, 1901 in
Barton Township, Worth County,
Iowa, to George and Martha
(Ruehlow) Belz. She was baptized
by Rev. Johnnes Becker on July
7, 1901. She was confirmed by
Rev. John Landdeck on April 16,
1916, at the Emmanuel Lutheran
Church in Grafton, Iowa. She
attended country school in
Barton Township in Worth County.
Ida married Henry Groth on
February 24, 1924 at her parents
home, by Rev. John Landdeck.
This union was blessed with four
children.
They lived on a
farm north east of St. Ansgar
until 1954. Ida moved into St.
Ansgar in 1959. She entered the
Good Samaritan Center on July 9,
1990. She was a member of the
Immanuel Lutheran Church in St.
Ansgar and a member of Ladies
Aid and circle.
Ida was preceded
in death by her parents; her
husband, Henry in 1954; a
daughter, Arlene; two sisters;
and one brother.
Her survivors
include a daughter, Dorothy and
her husband, Harlan Sponheim of
St. Ansgar; two sons, Arnold and
wife, Gladys Groth of St. Ansgar
and Paul and his wife, Barbara
Groth of St. Ansgar; 11
grandchildren; 21
great-grandchildren; many nieces
and nephews and a host of
friends at the Good Samaritan
Center.

Mishap Kills
Riceville Man
October 30, 2002
One Riceville man was
killed and two others
were hurt early Saturday
morning after the car
they were in struck a
bridge 2.5 miles north
of Riceville.
An Iowa
State Patrol report said
Jim Shane, 22, died as a
result of injuries
sustained in the
accident, which occurred
at 2:21 a.m.
The
driver of the 1991
Pontiac Grand Prix was
Cameron Byrnes, 22 of
Riceville. He and
another passenger, Ryan
Grimm, 22 of Riceville,
were transported to the
Mitchell County Regional
Health Center in Osage,
by the Mitchell County
Ambulance Service. They
were treated and
released.
The
report said the Grand
Prix was southbound on
T-68 when the driver
lost control and struck
a bridge. Charges are
pending, the report
noted.
The Iowa
State Patrol was
assisted at the scene by
the ambulance service,
plus the sheriff's
departments from
Mitchell and Howard
counties.

James Robert Shane
October 30, 2002
James Robert Shane, 22, of
Riceville, died on Saturday,
October 26, 2002, in an
automobile accident.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, October
29, at the Lindstrom Funeral
Home in Riceville. The Rev.
James Shelton officiated. Burial
was in the Calvary Cemetery,
Riceville. Father Ray E. Atwood
and Rev. James Shelton
administered graveside rites.
James Robert
Shane, son of Alan Gene and
Leesa Jo Wyatt Shane was born on
February 1, 1980 in Cresco,
Iowa. He was a 1998 graduate of
the Riceville Community High
School and was employed at Heim
Drywall of Rochester, Minnesota.
He was preceded
in death by his grandfather,
Robert Shane; one uncle, James
D. Shane; maternal
great-grandfathers, Thomas
McCarthy and Howard Wyatt;
paternal great-grandparents,
Paul and Anna Mayer; and
paternal great-grandfather,
Robert Shane, Sr.
Survivors include
his mother, Leesa Shane of
Riceville; his father, Alan
Shane of Riceville; three
brothers, Adam of Mason City,
Jacob and Jonathon, both of
Riceville; one sister, Ashley of
Riceville; maternal grandmother,
Nancy Wyatt of Osage; maternal
grandfather, Pete Wyatt of
Riceville; paternal grandmother,
Mary Ann Shane of Riceville;
maternal great-grandmothers,
Lillian McCarthy and Marcella
Wyatt, both of Riceville; and
paternal great-grandmother, Ruth
Shane of Taopi, Minnesota; and
many aunts, uncles and cousins.
