Grace Ione Graves

April 10, 2002

Ione Graves, age 81, of Riceville, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 4, at the United Church of Christ in Osage. The Rev. Robert Melhorn officiated and burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville, Iowa.

Ione was born on March 7, 1921 in Marshall County, to Merrill and Marguerite (Teeters) Mitchell. She was united in marriage to Marion L. Graves on August 11, 1940, at the Congregational Church in Marshalltown, Iowa. Marion and Ione moved to Riceville in 1950, where they engaged in farming until their retirement.

Ione enjoyed china painting, crocheting, knitting and quilting. She was a 4-H Leader for 10 years, a member of Eastern Star and a lifetime member of the Congregational Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Marion in 1998; and a sister, Helen Mitchell.

Survivors include one son, Dean Graves and his wife, Joni of Osage; three daughters, Marilyn Butters and her husband, Jerry of Mason City, Peggy Gall and her husband, Jim of Union and Jean Affeldt and her husband, Phillip of State Center; 11 grandchildren, Kenneth Butters and his wife, Karla and their four children, Brandon, Rachel, Blake, Rachel of Washington, Iowa; Keith Butters and his wife, Sherri and their three children, Breanne, Zach and Brooke of West Des Moines; Kevin Butters and his wife, Tammy of Des Moines; Kyle Butters and his wife, Amy and their two children, Jessica and Katelyn of West Bend, Wisconsin; Marian Gall of Urbandale; Brian Gall and his wife, Rebecca and their two children, Walker and Taryn of Union; Nicole Affeldt of Phoenix, Arizona; Chad Affeldt and his wife, Steph of Clemons; Richard Affeldt and his wife, Karen of Coralville; Robert Graves of Osage and Russell Graves of Norfolk, Virginia; and one brother, Merrill Dean Mitchell and his wife, Mary of Marshalltown.

Marie Juenger

April 10, 2002

Marie Juenger, 46, of St. Ansgar, died on Monday, April 1, 2002, near Carpenter, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, at the St. Ansgar Catholic Church in St. Ansgar. Rev. Joseph Schneider officiated with burial taking place in the Newburg Cemetery, Carpenter.

Marie was born on September 27, 1955 in Rochester, Minnesota, to Virl and Betty (Heaps) Deal. She attended the St. Ansgar High School and graduated from La’ James College. She married Maurice Juenger on March 13, 1982 at the Methodist Church in St. Ansgar.

Marie enjoyed bowling, gardening, fishing, camping, playing cards and making bread. Her family and grandchildren were her greatest joy. Marie was a member of the St. Ansgar Catholic Church.

Preceding her in death were her mother, Betty; uncles, Mel and Ross; and her grandparents.

She is survived by her husband, Maurice; three sons, Donnie, Nathan and Noah, all of St. Ansgar; two daughters, Ellena Rivers of Carpenter and Toleka Juenger of St. Ansgar; two grandchildren, Alex and Jacob Rivera; her father, Virl Deal of Grafton; two sisters, Lorraine Beland of St. Ansgar and Nancy Short of Stacyville; and one brother, Virl Deal, Jr. of Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Arminda E. Buechele

April 10, 2002

Arminda Elizabeth Buechele, age 98, of Grafton, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 6, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiated. Interment was in the Grafton Cemetery.

Arminda was born on March 11, 1904 at Belgrade, Minnesota, the daughter of Harry and Minnie (Lutz) Rappath. She attended school at Belgrade, Eden Valley and Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was united in marriage to Emil Buechele on September 14, 1923 in Minneapolis. The couple moved to Grafton in 1926. She worked in Walk’s Store for over 25 years and was a faithful member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton.

Arminda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emil in 1985; three sisters, Hazel Gerstenkorn, Vera Bork and Elsie Rappath; and a brother, Bill Rappath.

Survivors include a daughter, Jane Buechele of Grafton; a sister, Berneice Maker (who made her home with the couple) and her husband, Bob of Corvallis, Montana; a brother, Rev. Harry Rappath and his wife, Evelyn of Prescott, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.

Louis E. Folkestad

April 10, 2002

Louis E. Folkestad, 77, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the Missouri Rehab Center in Mt. Vernon, Missouri.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, April 6, at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Mitchell, Iowa.

Louis was born on May 22, 1924 in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Edward A. and June (Russell) Folkestad. He married Fern Tabor on December 11, 1943. They were married 58 years. Folkestad worked as an appraiser and was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Fern of Grove. Oklahoma; one daughter, Lori Ann Daughtrey of Fort Belvoir, Virginia; and four grandchildren, Nicholas, Aaron, Adam and Cayley.

Kathryn Fox-Orth

April 10, 2002

Kathryn “Kate” Fox-Orth, 47, of Gladstone, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2002.

Memorial services were held on Sunday, April 7, at the Mount Moriah Terrace Park Chapel. Funeral arrangements were made by the Mt. Moriah Terrace Park, Kansas City, Missouri.

Kate was born on December 15, 1954 in Osage, Iowa. She worked in sales for many years before devoting her time to her two children and her husband of 20 years. In addition she cared for their two boxers Titus and Penny. She loved the mornings and having that peaceful time to fulfill her favorite hobby of reading. Kate will be remembered as a loving, caring mother and wife as well as for her quick wit and humor which she shared with all she encountered. Kate’s loving spirit will remain close to all those she loved.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Judy Fox.

Survivors include her husband, David Orth; two children, Connor Orth at home and Megan and her husband, Jeremy Buckler of Dearborn, Missouri; and her parents, Vic and Sally Fox of Osage, Iowa.

Wilma Ruth Perkins

April 10, 2002

Wilma Ruth Perkins, age 88, died on Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 8, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, Iowa. The Rev. Kathy Larson officiated with burial in the Deer Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter.

Perkins was born on October 24, 1913 in Northwood, Iowa, to Sam O. and Marie (Allanson) Thompson. She graduated from the Northwood High School and received a teaching certificate from the Iowa State Normal College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school in rural Worth County for several years. Wilma and Clinton "Happy" Perkins were married in St. Ansgar, on August 21, 1937. She enjoyed her life as a homemaker and helper to her husband on the various farms they lived on in Worth and Mitchell Counties.

She was a bookkeeper for the Deer Creek Cheese Factory, an expert seamstress, an active member of the Deer Creek Lutheran Church where she sang in choir, member of the woman’s quartet, circle leader and held various offices in the Ladies Aid. For several years she served as Christmas Seals Township Chairwoman, was active in the Republican Party, Worth County Farm Bureau Women, Carpenter Friendship Club and participated on a bowling team. Wilma enjoyed music and encouraged her daughters in piano, instrumental and vocal music. Playing cards was a favorite pastime.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clinton; and sister, Fern Thompson.

She is survived by her five daughters, Carol (Lloyd) Tinkey of Yankton, South Dakota, Doreen ((Duane) Dorenkamp of Sheffield and Lansing, Iowa, Eileen Brunsvold of Clear Lake, Nancy (Richard) Vaught of Greer, South Carolina and Barbara (Dale) Eppens of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Anna “Ann” Schwab

April 10, 2002

Anna “Ann” Schwab, age 89, died on Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, April 9, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Father Philip Recker officiated and interment was in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Osage.

She was born on March 20, 1913 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Katherina (Frank) Kloberdanz. Anna was united in marriage to Alex Schwab on February 1, 1932, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They made their home at 1209 Walnut. She worked at various places around town and will be remembered for her kindness to others and her hard work ethics.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially the activities and accomplishments of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Schwab was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Guild.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Alex; four sisters, Christina, Elizabeth, Margaret “Peggy” and an infant sister, Regina; five brothers, Joseph, Peter, Jacob, John A. and an infant brother, John.

Survivors include three sons, Paul Schwab of Osage; Phil Schwab of Osage and his children, Mike Schwab and his wife, Katie and their children, Jacob, Morgan and Andrew, Mark Schwab, Julie Marley and husband, Jay and children, McKenzy and Avery and Doug Schwab; and Ron Schwab and his wife, Elaine of Osage and daughters, Kristy Miller and husband, Kenn and Jessica Schwab; a sister, Magdalene Wagner and husband, Eugene of Osage; a brother, George Kloberdanz and wife, Luella of Waterloo; three sisters-in-law, Elsie Kloberdanz of Waterloo, Gertrude Kloberdanz of Canon City, Colorado and Lou Kloberdanz of Austin, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law, Sue Schwab of Osage; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Adeline Johanns

April 10, 2002

Adeline Johanns, age 80, of Osage, died on Monday, April 8, 2002, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 11, at the Sacred Heart Church, Osage, with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m.

She was born on November 12, 1921, on the family farm near St. Ansgar, the daughter of Anton and Mary Ann (Kleinowski) Royek. Adeline married John R. Johanns, Sr. on January 23, 1941 at New Haven, Iowa. They farmed near McIntire for five years and then moved to a farm northeast of Osage in 1946. They moved to Osage in 1991.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, the Ladies Guild and the MI Club.

Adeline was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John R. Johanns, Sr. in 1996; and seven brothers.

She is survived by a daughter; Patricia Theis and husband; Donald of New Haven; three sons, John R. Johanns, Jr. of Grand Island, Nebraska, Donald J. Johanns, of Fridley, Minnesota and Governor Michael O. Johanns of Lincoln, Nebraska; two sisters, Francis Dempsey of Elma and Sylvia Churak of Chicago, Illinois; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Christopher Douglas Kronemann

April 17, 2002

Christopher Douglas Kronemann, infant son of Tara Richardson and Nick Kronemann, died shortly after his birth on Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 12, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage. Gary Gilbert officiated and burial was in the Osage Cemetery.

Preceding him in death were his maternal grandfather, Gene Richardson; paternal great-grandfather, Harold Benson; and maternal great-grandparents, Rowland and Pearl Grendel.

Survivors include his parents, Nick Kronemann and Tara Richardson; a sister, Courtney Michelle Kronemann of Osage; maternal grandmother, Gloria Richardson of Mason City; paternal grandparents, Doug and Linda Kronemann of Osage; maternal great-grandparents, Charles and Janet Richardson of Mason City; paternal great-grandmother, Jean Benson of Osage; paternal great-grandparents, Glenn and Delores Kronemann of Carpenter; aunts and uncles, Cindy and Jeff Riser of Mason City, Laurie and Joe Nuesh of Orlando, Florida and Stephanie Hungate of West Des Moines.

Golda F. McPhail

April 17, 2002

Golda F. McPhail, age 95, of Osage, died on Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 13, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Interment was in the Little Cedar Cemetery.

She was born on February 25, 1907 in Mitchell County, the daughter of George W. and Mabel (Jester) Donnor. She attended the Little Cedar School. Golda was married to Reed McPhail on September 13, 1924. They lived in Mitchell County all their married life.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Reed in 1977; one sister, Allene Roehr; and two granddaughters.

She is survived by two daughters, Marla Rosel and husband, George of Cedar Rapids and Judith Ann Fletcher and her husband, Bob of Katy, Texas; three sons, Robert McPhail and his wife, Louise of Osage, Darrell McPhail and his wife, Evelyn of San Diego, California and Richard McPhail and his wife, Ruth of Austin, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Gilbert John Weber

April 17, 2002

Gilbert John Weber, age 93, died at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, on Thursday, April 11, 2002. 

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 13, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. The Reverend Jospeh Schneider officiated. Burial was in the Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.

Gilbert was born on July 24, 1908, the son of Joseph and Ann (Gilbenbach) Weber at Stacyville. He attended the Visitation School. November 15, 1930, he was united in marriage to Martha Brumm at Rochester, Minnesota. He farmed his entire life in the Stacyville area, retiring and moving to Stacyville in 1973.

He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and had been a resident of the Stacyville Community Nursing Home since November of 1996.

Preceding him in death were his wife; parents; and brothers, Aloysius and Kenneth.

Survivors include two sons, Melvin Weber of Palmetto, Florida and Leslie and wife, Beverly of Stacyville; one daughter, Janet Mayer and husband, Glen of Stacyville; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Theresa Blake of Stacyville; and three brothers, Edmund Weber and wife, Virginia of Stacyville, Sylvester Weber of Marshalltown and Leo Weber and wife, Marjorie of Charles City.

Anton “Tony” Pike

April 17, 2002

Anton “Tony” Pike, age 90, of St. Ansgar, died on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at his daughter’s home in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will take place in the First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar. Visitation will continue on Thursday until one hour prior to the services at the church.

Anton Edwin “Tony” Pike, was born on January 19, 1912 in Deer Creek Township, Iowa, to Edwin Roy Pike and Mary Johanna (Johnson) Pike. He married Alice Campbell on July 5, 1942 in Austin, Minnesota. He lived in the St. Ansgar area all of his life and was a member of the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. He enjoyed his garden and playing cards, but his biggest joy was his family.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Alice in 1995; four sisters, Laura, Evelyn, Pearl and Dianna; and four brothers, Erwin, Earl, Lawrence and Warren.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet and husband, Earl Randall of Waterloo and Susan and husband, Gary Squier of Mason City; one son, Gerald and wife, Judy Pike of Albert Lea, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Teresa Zuke of Waterloo, Tamara and husband, Jeff Whalen of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Brian and wife, Andrea Halama of St. Paul, Minnesota, Jodee and husband, Ben McCallum of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Michelle Squier of Minneapolis, Brian and wife, Ann Squier of Colo, Iowa, Kelly and husband, Kenny Walker of Hampton and Kyle and wife, Heidi Pike of Buffalo Center; nine great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Matthew, Joshua, Danielle, Kailey, Mason, Noah, Paige and Logan; one great-great-grandchild, Abigail; three sisters, Edna Knutson of California, Deloris Thompson of Toeterville and Crystal Braun of Grafton; and one sister-in-law, Bernice Pike of Clear Lake, Iowa.

Emma Minnie Skjeveland

April 17, 2002

Emma Minnie (Rasmussen) Skjeveland, age 86, of St. Ansgar, died on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, April 17, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter. Rev. Kathy Larson will officiate and burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Bernard John May

April 17, 2002

Bernard John May, 91, of Stacyville, died on Sunday, April 14, 2002, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, April 17, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with Father Joseph Schneider officiating. Interment was in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Stacyville.

Bernard John May, was born on December 31, 1910 in Meyer, Iowa, the son of Henry J. and Anna M. (Hackenmiller) May. He was united in marriage to Regina Anne Bissen on November 15, 1938 at Johnsburg, Minnesota. Bernard was a life long farmer in the Johnsburg area, retiring to Stacyville in 1977. He was a member of the Visitation Catholic church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and was instrumental in starting both the St. John’s Council 3812 of Adams, Minnesota and the Marian Council 8650 of Stacyville and he served as the Marian Council’s first Grand Knight. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Jean Pierre Aluneau Assembly in Austin, Minnesota.

May was instrumental in organizing and in the building of the Stacyville Community Nursing Home being an original board member and its first president. He also served on the Stacyville Creamery Board. After retirement he made many rosaries for family, friends and the missions.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; son, John in 1974; three brothers, Edmund, Othmar and Clement; and two sisters, Sister Margaret May and Dorothy May.

Survivors include his wife, Regina of Stacyville; nine children, Robert (Audrey) May of Stacyville, Rita (Daniel) McCoy of Rochester, Minnesota, Carol (John) Sullivan of Osage, Ann (Tom) Wolf of Sheffield, Gerard (Janet) May of Osage, Edward (Teresa) May of Stacyville, Pamela (Richard) Fox of Cedar Rapids, Mark (Rosanne) May of Adams, Minnesota and Catherine (Daniel) Moellenbeck of Granger; two brothers, Fred (Dorothy) May of Rose Creek, Minnesota and Anthony May of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; three sisters, Elizabeth (Joseph) Martyniak of Taunton, Massachusetts, Olivia (Robert) Pitzen of Stacyville and Evelyn (Ralph) Brumm of Osage; sister-in-law, Irma May of Stacyville; 27 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Kirby Jean Pappas

April 24, 2002

Kirby Jean Pappas, 15, of Nora Springs, died on Tuesday April 16, 2002, at her home.

A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, April 22, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, with Rev. Dennis Cahill, officiating. Graveside services were conducted in the Orchard Cemetery in Orchard.

Kirby Jean was born on July 1, 1986 in Mason City, the daughter of James A. and Sandra J (Fink) Pappas. She was a sophomore at the Nora Springs High School and a cheerleader. She enjoyed attending school and going to many sports events.

Kirby loved fashion, shopping, fixing her hair, watching movies, listening to music, going with her family to her grandparent’s cabin where she would fish, swim, other water sports and where Grandpa George always had treats for her in the boat. Kirby babysat for her cousins, friends and worked at the Juke Box Drive Inn. She was always happy, outgoing and had a beautiful smile. She was a good friend to all.

Kirby was confirmed on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, where she was a member and also she was a member of the class of 2004 Nora Springs High School.

She is survived by her parents, James A. and Sandra J. Pappas of Nora Springs; sister, Jody Pappas and brother, Theodore Pappas, both of Nora Springs; maternal grandmother, Margaret Fink of Nora Springs; and paternal grandparents, Marguerite and George Pappas of Mason City; and several aunts, uncles and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her brother, David; and grandfather, James Fink.

Gladys Ahlf

Gladys Ahlf, 73, of Osage, died on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Friday, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar. Rev. Byron Northwick of the Immanuel Lutheran Church officiated. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Beverly Jean Riehm

April 24, 2002

Beverly Jean Riehm, 66, of Des Moines, died of leukemia, on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines.

No services are planned. Riehm was immediately cremated with burial in the Hamilton’s Crematory, Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa Leukemia Society of America, Des Moines, Iowa.

She was a homemaker and resident of Des Moines for the past 43 years and prior to that lived in Osage.

Norma Shaw

April 24, 2002

Norma Shaw, age 84, died on Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Hospice Unit in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 20, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. Rev. Mike Carey officiated. Interment was in the Orchard Cemetery.

Norma was born on November 18, 1917 at Nora Springs, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Lila (Dean) Hedden. She graduated from the Nora Springs High School. Norma was united in marriage to Glen Shaw on January 13, 1940 in Nora Springs. They resided in Mitchell and Floyd Counties and lived in Orchard for over 40 years. She liked reading, fishing, camping, traveling and gardening.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Glen in 1997; one daughter, Dorothy Davison; two brothers, Glenn Hedden and Lyle Hedden; one sister, Nona Halama; and one grandson, Scott Hewitt.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty Starr and husband, Herb of Clear Lake, June Edwards and husband, Roger of Cedar Rapids and Barbara Jeffries and husband, Leo of Osage; three sons, Harley Shaw and his wife, Joyce of Orchard, Howard Shaw and his wife, Sharon of Osage and Richard Shaw of Orchard; one son-in-law, James Davison of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 27 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Neva Johnson of Dunkerton and Nina Eyster of Des Moines.

Ruth Ida Wolff

April 24, 2002

Ruth Ida Wolff, age 83, of St. Ansgar, died on Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in St Ansgar.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 22, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. Reverend Byron Northwick officiated. Burial was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Ruth Ida Wolff, was born on March 17, 1919 in Osage, to Lee and Agnes (Seffinga) Hobbs. She was baptized on September 1, 1930, at the Congregational Church in Osage and later was confirmed on February 19, 1939, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. She was united in marriage to Theodore Wolff on August 1, 1936, at the Congregational Church, Osage. She loved her family and her church.

The last 33 years she was a resident of the Good Samaritan Center.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; one son, Gary; two brothers, Hilmar and Merle; and one sister, Mary.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Griga of St. Ansgar and Carol Power of Osage; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and also the loving staff of the Good Samaritan Center.

Dorothy D. Kindschuh

April 24, 2002

Dorothy D. “Doudna” Kindschuh, age 76, of Osage, died on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 23, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage. Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiated. Interment was in the Osage cemetery.

Dorothy was born on March 13, 1926 in Burr Oak Township near Osage, the daughter of Vivian and Anna (Benson) Doudna. She graduated from the Osage High School in 1943 and following graduation worked as a secretary for the Osage High School for three years. She was a secretary for Marr Knitting Mill in Osage from 1946 to 1970. Dorothy was united in marriage to Dean Kindschuh on November 19, 1950, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, where she was a member. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in the fall of 2000.

Dorothy worked in the Mitchell County Auditor’s Office from 1970 to 1979 and was appointed Mitchell County Auditor in 1979, retiring in 1988. She enjoyed attending the different events of her nieces and nephews. She found great pleasure in gardening and spending time with close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and LaVonne Doudna.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Dean Kindschuh of Osage; one sister, Ann Lewis and husband, Robert of Osage; three nieces, Karen Brumm and husband, Richard, Kathy Lessard and Dawn Lewis; five nephews, James Doudna and wife, Kathy, Donald Doudna and wife, Barbara, Michael Lewis and wife, Kim, David Lewis and Daniel Lewis and wife, Kelly; 22 great-nieces and nephews; and special friend, Emily.

Wilbur Bednar

May 1, 2002

Wilbur “Chic” Bednar, 83, of Osage, died on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at the USA Healthcare in Mason City.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, April 27, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton, Iowa. “Chic’s” grandson, Pastor Frank A. Bednar of Covington, Kentucky officiated. A prayer service was held at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

He was born on March 5, 1919 in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Frank A. and Antonia (Koutny) Bednar. “Chic” was united in marriage to Violet Young on September 12, 1940 in Cedar Rapids. They made their home in Vinton and in 1962 moved to Osage, where he was the machinist for Osage Motor Supply until retiring in 1984. He loved to fish and bake pies for his friends.

Bednar was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Violet in 1984.

Survivors include one daughter, Julia E. Jones of Mason City; two sons, Frank E. Bednar of Rockford, Illinois and Kenneth W. Bednar of St. Jacob, Illinois; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Gene R. Neis

May 8, 2002

Gene R. Neis, age 60, of Chatfield, died on Friday, April 26, 2002, at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, following a lengthy illness. He had lived in the care center since April 28, 1997.

A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, April 29, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chatfield, with the Reverend Thomas Loomis officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Chatfield. Memorials may be sent to the Seasons Hospice in Rochester.

Gene was born on January 2, 1942 in Osage, Iowa. He lived in a number of Iowa communities and in Wyckoff, Spring Valley, Rochester, Albert Lea and Stewartville, Minnesota before moving to Chatfield in 1975. He served in the Army from 1962 to 1966 and was a member of the Eyota American Legion. He was an exterminator with Quality Pest Control Co. before starting Gene’s Pest Control in 1980. He was married on November 26, 1963 to Mavis Musel who died in 1968. Gene then married Carole Bingham on November 2, 1968 and she preceded him in death in 1992.

Also preceding him in death were his father; a brother; and a sister.

Survivors include four sons, Michael (Patty) of Dover, Allan (Tamra) of Chatfield, Tim (Sheila) of Lakeville, Minnesota and Thom (Amy) of Spring Valley; seven grandchildren; his mother, Christina Neis of Rochester; three brothers, Ronald (Eloise) of Spring Valley, Raymond, Jr. of Rochester and Robert (Lois) of Milwaukee; two sisters, Maridean (Marv) Fernelius of Okoboji, Iowa and Rosemary Neis of Rochester.

William F. Frein, Sr.

May 1, 2002

William F. Frein, Sr, 73, died on Saturday, April 27, 2002, at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, May 2, at the All Saints Parish in Des Moines. Visitation with the family present, will be from 4-6:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 1, at the All Saints Catholic Church, with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Highland Memory Gardens, Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to the All Saints Catholic Church or the Holy Family School.

Bill was born in Osage, Iowa and has resided in Des Moines since 1963. He was a route deliveryman for the Prairie Farms Dairy before his retirement. He served in the US Air Force and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, The American Legion, Am Vets Post No. 2, Des Moines and a member of the All Saints Catholic Church in Des Moines.

Immediate survivors include his wife, Alice Frein of Des Moines; two daughters, Julie Schomer of Des Moines and Rebecca Montijo of Mesa, Arizona; three sons, Tracy Frein of Chicago, Illinois, Randall Frein and Bill Frein Jr., both of Des Moines; two brothers, Marvin of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Bob of Osage; two sisters, Mary Alice Merrick of Minnesota and Pat Ahrens of Mason City; and eight grandchildren.

Larry G. Walk

May 1, 2002

Larry G. Walk, age 59, of Little Cedar, died suddenly on Saturday, April 27, 2002, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 1, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with Father Joseph Schneider officiating. Interment was in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Stacyville.

Larry was born on May 26, 1942 in Mason City, the son of George and Dorothy (Luth) Walk. He graduated from the Little Cedar High School in 1960. He married Louise Adams on July 20, 1974 at Stacyville, Iowa. He farmed and worked at White Farm in Charles City, Fieldstone Cabinets in Northwood and was a mechanic at Fox River Mills in Osage.

Larry loved his family and enjoyed gardening, yard work, building things and many other outdoor activities.

Walk was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Duane Walk in September 2001; and many aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his wife, Louise of Little Cedar; one son, Lynn Joseph Walk of Little Cedar; sister-in-law, Carolyn Walk of Rochester, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Virginia Schrandt

May 1, 2002

Virginia Schrandt, 52, of Stacyville, died on Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, May 2, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Interment will take place in the Visitation Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7:30 p.m., on Wednesday, with a Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Visitation Catholic Church.

She was born on September 6, 1949 in Osage, Iowa, to Wilfred and Rita Niess Schrandt. She attended the Visitation Grade School and graduated from the Marian High School in 1968. She worked at Easter Seals in Mason City and Cedar Valley Rehabilitation in Austin, Minnesota. Virginia worked in the housekeeping department at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home until ill health caused her to retire. She became a resident of the home in September 2000.

Virginia was a member of the Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters and the American legion Auxiliary.

Preceding her in death were her father; her maternal grandparents; and her paternal grandparents.

Survivors include her mother, Rita of Stacyville; two brothers, Dick and his wife, Susan of Caldwell, Idaho and Charles and his wife, Beverly of South St. Paul, Minnesota; one sister, Marie and her husband, Kelly Hendrix of Caldwell, Idaho; three nephews, Christian, Michael and Nathan Schrandt; and four nieces, Krista and her husband, Jesse Naymik, Kara Schrandt and Allison and Claire Hendrix.
