Eleonore was the last descendent
of Henry Toeter, founder of the
Village of Toeterville, living
in Union Township, Mitchell
County, Iowa. May she rest
in peace in the Lord Jesus
Christ.
Eleonore J.
Grube, was born on October 2,
1899, on her grandfather’s farm
in Union Township, Mitchell
County, Iowa, to Carl W. and
Emma Grube of Toeterville. She
was baptized on October 15,
1899, by the Rev. G. Landgrebe,
Pastor of the St. Petri Lutheran
Church, Toeterville, with Mrs.
John Ehlke, Sr. and Mrs. Amanda
Toeter serving as sponsors.
Eleonore attended the St. Petri
Lutheran School for three
winters and made her
confirmation of Christian faith
on March 16, 1913, after
instruction by the Rev. E.M.
Lehmann.
Eleonore attended
the Union Township Public School
#4 and graduated from 8th grade
in the spring of 1915. She then
attended the St. Ansgar High
School and graduated in 1919.
Eleonore attended Iowa State
Teachers College in Cedar Falls
and taught for 25 years in rural
schools in Mitchell County.
Her distinguished career as a
teacher was recognized by her
nieces and nephews through the
establishment of a scholarship
for students preparing to be
elementary school teachers at
Grand View College in Des
Moines. Many former students
have remembered her through the
years with visits and gifts in
appreciation of her kindly and
effective manner of instruction.
Eleonore’s
interest in education extended
beyond secular subjects into the
area of religion and life. She
taught Sunday School for 60
years and served as the Sunday
School Treasurer at the St.
Petri Lutheran Church for 50
years. This service brought her
immense enjoyment. In some
families, she taught three
generations of students.
After her public school teaching
career, she returned home to
care for her aged parents. She
also cared for her sister, Adie
in her home, until Adie’s death.
Eleonore found
deep satisfaction and joy
participating in the life and
work of the church. She took
part in youth groups, choirs,
single and double quartets and
women’s organization. She
approached her life in the
church as an opportunity for
service to God and His Creation.
Eleonore's life
was an inspiration to members of
her family and friends. Her firm
but kindly approach to children
caused them to love and respect
her. Her legacy to us is
measured in her great concern
for welfare, the brightness of
her spirit and the strength of
her Christian faith.
