Reva Darlene "Muggs" Fredrickson

Northwood, Iowa- Reva Darlene "Muggs" Fredrickson, 86, of Northwood, died on Friday, November 23, 2012, at her home.

Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Mona Lutheran Church, Mona, Iowa, with the Rev. Lydia Mittag officiating.

Visitation was held Sunday, Nov. 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, Iowa.

"Muggs," as she was known to her family and close friends, was born on April 20, 1925, in Pleasanton, Kansas, to Frank and Grace (Rees) Hinds. She married Harold Fredrickson on September 11, 1944. She was an avid quilter and well known around the Carpenter and Osage areas for their interest in auctions.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; parents; brothers, Claude, Pat, Skinny, Lefty and Hubert; and sisters, Hazel, Maxine and Alice.

Muggs is survived by two sons, Gary (Becky) Fredrickson of Byron, Minn., and Scott (Ginny) Fredrickson of Placerville, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Carol (Jerry) Anderson of Utah; and numerous nieces and nephews, especially Kyla, who frequently visited Muggs.

BELMOND - Marjorie E. "Marj" Granzow, 91, of Belmond died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.

June J. Stevens

Manly - June J. Stevens, 94, of Manly died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service for June will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 E. South St., with Pastor Don Preston officiating. Burial will take place at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be donated to Hospice of North Iowa in June's name.

June Joyce Stevens, daughter of Amandus and Cora (Alitz) Tietjens, was born Sept. 20, 1918, in rural Cerro Gordo County. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1935. June taught private music lessons before marrying Ray Field. Ray and June moved to many places, including Phoenix and Canada, before returning home to rural Kensett where she moved back to the farm. Ray passed away in 1956 and June married Morris Stevens, and they lived in rural Kensett before he died. June has lived at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past five years.

June enjoyed being outdoors, especially gardening and mowing. Sewing and quilting are what she did as a pastime. She also had a passion for shopping and making purchases. Most importantly, she had a gift of giving, donating her time and money to anyone who needed it.

She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, past member of the Kensett Methodist Church where she was active as a music director, and organist and past member of the Ladies Aid at the Kensett Methodist Church.

She leaves behind her nieces and nephews, Roger (Cheryl) Tietjens, Mason City, Mike (Jan) Seidel, Rochester, Minn., Clyde Tietjens, Mason City, Jerry (Barb) Tietjens, Waterloo and Peggy Tietjens, St. Paul, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, three brothers, Irvin, Harold and Merrill, one sister, Delphia Seidel, and three nieces and two nephews.

Northwood - Ryan Michael Weisert, 25, of rural Northwood died on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, as the result of a traffic accident.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be in the State Line Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Ann (Rickoff) Bogdan

Indianapolis - Ann (Rickoff) Bogdan, 95, of Indianapolis, passed away Nov. 23, 2012. She was born March 15, 1917, in Mason City, Iowa, to John and Rose Rickoff.

Ann enjoyed being a homemaker and was extremely creative with crafts. She was married to Edward J. Bogdan for 53 years, and they enjoyed their retirement years in Denver, Colo. After Ed's passing in 2007, Ann moved to Indianapolis to be closer to her niece and nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Lena Hausauer; brothers, George, Pete and Bill Rickoff; and sister-in-laws, June and Stella Rickoff.

Ann is survived by nieces, Kris McCready (Bob) of Indianapolis, Ind., and Paula Gahn of Mason City, Iowa; nephews, John (Jill) Rickoff of Carmel, Ind., Jim (Lynda) Rickoff of Winona, Minn., and Bill (Chris) Rickoff of Winona, MN; three great- nieces; eight great-nephews; and numerous Bogdan relatives.

Terry Allen Cook
U.S. Army (1971-1975)

Indianola, Iowa - Terry Allen Cook, 59, of Indianola, Iowa, passed away Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, after a long illness. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be noon today, Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City with the Rev. Keith Scott. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City where full military honors will be conducted by Mason City Veterans Association. Visitation will be one hour before the service. The family suggests memorials to Terry A. Cook Memorial Fund.

Terry was born May 16, 1953, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of DeLos Emmet and JoAnn Darlene (Beery) Cook. He served in the United States Army from 1971-1975. After proudly serving his country, he made his home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for most of his life. He moved to the Des Moines/Indianola area in 2008, where he was employed by the Veterans Hospital. Terry loved his job and took great pride in doing it well. He will be missed by his many friends and co-workers there.

Terry will be remembered by all who loved him as a kind-hearted and gentle-natured man with a beautiful smile and easy laugh. We will miss him greatly.

He enjoyed golfing, playing cards and was a big fan of the Green Bay Packers.

He is survived by his father, DeLos and step-mother Dee Cook of Kensett, Iowa; his sister Rebecca "Becky" Chiafos, of Watkins, Iowa, brother Robert"Bob" (Kim) Stehno, sisters, Maureen(John) Corcoran and Colleen Monahan, all of Cedar Rapids, step-sisters Vickie Hukill and Julie Welsh and his best friend Terry Hutchinson and many nieces and nephews.

Terry is preceded in death by his mother, JoAnn Burns and his step-brother, Russel Herbert.

Agnes Irene Gilbert

Clear Lake - Agnes Irene Gilbert, 98, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, Iowa with the Rev. Rhoda Preston officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Ward-Van-Slyke Colonial Chapel. Interment will be in Concord Cemetery, Garner, Iowa.

Agnes was born June 30, 1914, in Thompson, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Inga (Havnen) Hestness. She graduated from Thompson High School in 1931.
She married Dean Alfred Gilbert Nov. 9, 1940, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Agnes worked at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for twenty years as a nurse's aide retiring in 1985. She enjoyed crocheting, baking and sports. She also volunteered at Opportunity Village and A.E.A. She was a member of Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

Agnes is survived by her four children, Joanne Gilbert Stebbins, Longwood, Fla.; Judy (Dr. Jim) Schrader, Glendale, Ariz.; Dr. Michael (Dr. Deirdre) Gilbert, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ron Gilbert, Ocala,Fla.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dean in 1958; son Dennis in 2002; six brothers and four sisters.

Michael P. Goodsell

Mason City - Michael P. Goodsell, 55, of Mason City, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Private family services will be held at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City with Pastor Stephen Wolfe of Temple Baptist Church officiating. Michael's family will host a time for refreshments and sharing of memories on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 409 First St. N.W., beginning at 3:30 p.m.; all are welcome to attend.

Michael Paul Goodsell was born on Nov. 27, 1956, in Denver, Colo., the son of Shirley Malara. He attended and graduated from Lajunta High School in Lajunta, Colo.

In 1982, Michael moved to Mason City where he worked for various construction companies as well as Huffman Buses before beginning to work for Kraft Foods through Kelly Services, where he had been employed for the last nine years.

In his free time, Michael loved to spend time with his family and his beloved dog, Daisy. He enjoyed family barbecues, the outdoors, bird watching, and trips to the casino. Michael was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Mason City.

Those grateful in sharing in Michael's life are his common-law wife, Debra Ingle, Mason City; children, Tamra (Tony) Ollar, Livermore, Calif., Darci (Kevin) Tyler, Davenport, Ryan (Angie) Ingle, Oquawka, Ill., Michael (Sheila) Goodsell, Jr., Lakewood, Colo., Anthony Goodsell, Mankato, Minn., and Zachary Goodsell, Mankato; his sister, Cindy (Tony) Panetta, Brighton, Colo., several additional brothers and sisters, all residing in Denver, Colo., 12 grandchildren; his brothers and sisters in law, Frank and Terri Baltierra, Roger and Vicki Myhre, Jolene Erickson, Kenneth Taylor, Tim and Cheryl Lewis, and Dale and Stephanie Lewis, Jr.; as well as several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Susan J. Gottfried

Clear Lake - Susan J. Gottfried, 85, Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, Nov, 25, 2012, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A visitation will be held at Ward Van-Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Wednesday, 4 to 7 p.m. with a time for sharing at 6:30 p.m. Pastor Rich Murray will officiate. Inurnment will be held at the Riverside Cemetery, Friday, 11:30 a.m., Nov. 30, with the Rev. Bonser officiating. Following the graveside service, family and friends will be gathering at the Moose Lodge, Marshalltown, to share memories and have refreshments. Memorials may be given Susan Gottfried Memorial Fund.

Susan was born June 27, 1927, in Quarry, Iowa, the daughter of Guy and Fern (Dudley) Gummert. She obtained her G.E.D. at the age of fifty-two and received further education as a medical aide.

She married Ed Buchanan Sr. and to this union three children, Jane, Edward and Joyce, were born. She later married Reuben Franklin Gottfried Sr. in 1959, and to this union they had one son, Frankie. She moved to Ventura in 1995 to be closer to her family. After she moved to Ventura she enjoyed going to family events and helping at her daughter's café Downtown Café, Fertile.

Susan lived most of her life in Marshalltown where she was very active. She was a loving care giver and worked as camp director at Pilgrim Heights for ten years; she was a foster parent for special needs children for over thirteen years; worked at Iowa Veterans Home and at Marshall County Home. She loved talking on the CB and her handle was Gypsy Lady. She enjoyed having her children and grandchildren to her house where she always had a treasure keepsake for them and looking for four leaf clovers. She was well known as the women with a flower in her hair. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandbabies. Susan took people under her wing and enjoyed being needed.

Susan is survived by her children, Jane Ramon and her husband Al, Fertile, Iowa, Edward Buchanan Jr. and his wife Jan, Lake Mills, Iowa, Joyce Hanson and her husband Mike, Ventura, Iowa, and Frankie Gottfried, Clear Lake; six grandchildren Laurie Buchanan and special friend Dan Bolz, Mason City, Iowa, Alvino Ramon and his wife Mary, Nora Springs, Iowa, Julie Grell and her husband Doug, Thornton, Iowa, Jeremy Buchanan and his special friend Krista Carlson, Belmond, Iowa, Ryan Buchanan Waterloo, Iowa, and Tammy Ramon-Young and her husband Dan, Nora Springs; ten great- grandchildren; five sisters Fern Mull, Marshalltown, Iowa, Gladys Long, Gilman, Iowa, Edith Pothast, Van Cleve, Iowa, Margaret Judge, Marshalltown, and Emma Richardson and her husband Duane, Marshalltown; many nieces and nephews and extended family Chuck Waage.

John F. Hunchis

Lake Mills - John F. Hunchis, 76, of 43061 Maple Dr., Lake Mills, Iowa, passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, in his home.

Rodney Allers officiating and Monsignor Wayne Ressler co-officiating. Internment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, luncheon following at St. Joseph. The family suggests memorials to John F. Hunchis memorial fund.

John was born Dec. 18, 1935, in Mason City, the son of Fred and Kathleen (Dorsey) Hunchis. Later he and his siblings were adopted by his stepmom Julia (Spaanum) Hunchis. While attending school John was very involved in athletics, including basketball and baseball. He graduated from Plymouth High School 1954, and then attended St. Thomas College.

John married Carol Jordan Dec. 26, 1978, in Albert Lea, Minn.

He owned and operated Hunchis Cattle Co. rural Plymouth, where he bought and sold cattle through out the United States and raised and raced quarter horses. He later sold cars in the North Iowa area and most recently was employed by Forest City Ford.

He was an avid and competitive golfer and enjoyed playing various courses both regional and abroad and built his home on No. One fairway at Rice Lake Golf and Country Club. John enjoyed entertaining and grilling out, attending his children and grandchildren's events; landscaping around his new home and planning an annual sporting event with his family. One of John's favorite things to do was spontaneously travel with his best friend and wife Carol. He was very proud of his Catholic faith and was a loyal Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan.

He was a past board member of Rice Lake Golf and Country Club.

John is survived by his wife Carol Hunchis, Lake Mills; five children Mary (Jim) Stichter, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Francie (Randy) Maakestad, Plano, Texas, Julie (Roger) Morrison, Omaha, Neb., John (Candee) Hunchis, Northwood, Iowa. and Jordan (Jill) Hunchis, Rochester, Minn.; fourteen-grandchildren Jamie Sickles, Jill Mast, Patrick Schneider, Meagan Schneider, Jimmie Hunter, John (Jack) Stichter, Joseph Stichter, Katie Maakestad, Matthew Maakestad, Anna Calgaard, Sarah Calgaard, Nicole Morrison, Hannah Hunchis and Molly Hunchis; three great-grandchildren Keira Sickles, Leah Sickles and Stella Mast; one brother William (Bettie) Hunchis, Scottsdale, Ariz.; one sister Katy (Lowell) Holden, Burnsville, Minn.; brother-in-law William (Jeanne) Reynolds, Minneapolis, Minn. and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by father Fred Hunchis; mother Kathleen Dorsey and his adoptive mother Julia Hunchis; sister Marianne Reynolds; aunt Dorothy Hunchis and a nephew Billy Reynolds.

Lillian B. Johnson

DECORAH - Lillian B. Johnson, 93, of Decorah, Iowa, formerly of Mason City, passed away Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah of natural causes.

Visitation was held at 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 23, with funeral services following at 4 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah. Burial was in the Bricelyn Cemetery in Bricelyn, Minn.

Lillian Bernice Johnson was born December 6, 1918, the daughter of Guy and Mabel (Range) Beaver, in Rake, Iowa. She attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated in 1936 from Rake High School.

illian married Clarence C. Johnson of Bricelyn, Minn., on December 9, 1939, at the Bricelyn Lutheran Church Parsonage. Lillian and Clarence farmed in rural Bricelyn, where daughters Vivian and Mary were born. In 1952, the family moved to Northwood, Iowa, where Clarence worked for Johnson's Feed Supply, and Lillian attended classes at Mason City Junior College and Drake University. In 1959, the Johnsons moved to Mason City, Iowa, where Clarence worked for the Hy-Cross Chick Company, and eventually purchased the hatchery business along with partner Garth Rathjen. Lillian continued her education, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Drake University. Lillian was a teacher for elementary and middle school students at Grafton, Iowa, and Mason City for 25 years. She was an active church member and Sunday School teacher everywhere she lived.

After her husband's passing on December 1, 2004, Lillian lived in several care facilities, including the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home and Assisted Living facility, and the Aase Haugen Home, both in Decorah. Lillian enjoyed RV traveling, the company of family and friends and spending winters in Arizona with her husband. She freely dispensed her wisdom about getting the work done before play, and the value of taking nature walks.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband Clarence; her parents, Guy and Mabel (Range) Beaver of Rake, Iowa; one sister, Bonnie (Beaver) Carlson of Rake; four brothers: twin brother Lyle of Warrensburg, Mo., Maynard of Albert Lea, Minn., Vernon of Traer, Iowa, and Robert of Albert Lea.

She is survived by her brother, Gene Beaver of Costa Mesa, Calif.; two daughters, Vivian Achenbach of Prairie du Chien, Wisc.; and Mary (Peter) Jorgensen of Decorah; five grandchildren, Mark (Debra) Sunde of Harrisonville, Mo.; Mike (Ruth) Sunde of Spokane, Wash.; Greg (Karen) Sunde of New Glarus, Wisc.; Sara (Jason) Nottestad of Decorah, and Zachary Jensen of Decorah. Lillian is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Marcus, Dallas and Savannah Sunde, Raymond and Lane Sunde and Joseph Nottestad.

Phyllis Ann Robinson

Forest City - Phyllis Ann Robinson was born on December 11, 1930, to Claire and Helen (Lynn) Doyle in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

She was baptized and confirmed in Linden, Iowa, in 1949. She lived most of her life in Thompson, Iowa, where she attended country school and graduated from Thompson High School in 1948.

On June 17, 1948, she was united in marriage to Milton Hauan at the parsonage in Crystal Lake, Iowa. They resided in Thompson until 1956 and then moved to Whittier, Calif. Milton passed away in 1992. On September 30, 1997, Phyllis was united in marriage to Kenneth Robinson at the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas, Nev.

Phyllis was a homemaker until her children got older, and then took a job as a cook for a school in Montebello, Calif. She was a loving wife and wonderful mother, and will be greatly missed.

She was an active member in her church, teaching Sunday School and was active in Ladies Aid and in church circles. She especially enjoyed the quilting. She also really enjoyed gardening and canning.

Phyllis is survived by her beloved husband Kenny of Forest City, Iowa, her children; Becky (Gary) Bowling of Henderson, Nev., Jean (Dave) Heyer of Thompson, Brenda Allstun of La Habra, Calif, Barbara (Dale) Bowling of Olancha, Calif., and Margaret Zanitsch of Hesperia, Calif. She also has twelve grandchildren; Jason (Stephanie) Koontz, Heather (Dan) Angell, Amy and Lisa Hauan, Matthew (Aryn) Koontz, Zachary (Melissa) Koontz, Brittany (Johnny) Hultman Rodriguez, Jeffrey and Jennifer Allstun, Joseph (Jessica) Bowling, Nicole (Jeremy) Hale and Travis Zanitsch, as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and her sisters Mary Thorland and Char Hamlin and her brother Richard Doyle.

She is preceded in death by her first husband Milton Hauan, her parents Claire and Helen Doyle, mother and father-in-law Margaret and Ole Hauan, her son Lyle Hauan and her sisters Clarice (Joe) Wubben, Dorothy (Elwood) Norstrud and her brother Bill Doyle.

Ryan Michael Weisert

Northwood, Iowa - Ryan Michael Weisert, 25, of Northwood, died on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, as the result of a traffic accident.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday, Nov, 28, at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be in the State Line Cemetery, rural Northwood. Visitation is scheduled for today, Tuesday, Nov. 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S. Northwood, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Ryan was born on July 19, 1987, in Mason City, Iowa, to Michael and Wendy (Willand) Weisert. When young, he would be dressed in his blue jean overalls, cowboy boots and cowboy hat and was going farming at grandpas. He attended Northwood-Kensett schools, graduating with the class of 2006, where he was involved in football (All State selection), wrestling, track and baseball. He attended North Iowa Area Community College in the Building Trades program for one year and was employed by Kenison Construction of Northwood.

Ryan coached youth wrestling in Northwood since 2006. He enjoyed kids, frequently teasing and picking on them. He loved to hunt and his dogs, Drake and Benelli, were his pride and joy. Every evening after work he stopped by his father's shop for a Gatorade before heading out to work on friends projects. Ryan loved Hawkeye football and wrestling. He enjoyed snowmobiling, golfing and his Harley. He would tease his grandmother (constantly), stopping at Hy-Vee to visit and eating the sample pizzas she would be handing out.

Ryan's gleam in his eye and smile on his face got him out of a lot of trouble.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Joyce Willand; paternal grandfather, Harold Weisert; also his great-grandparents.

Judy Lynn (Aves) Bird

Manly - Judy Lynn (Aves) Bird passed away on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. Her loving family was at her bedside.

A funeral service for Judy will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 North Broadway, Manly, with the Reverend Neil J. Manternach officiating. Following the service on Thursday, cremation will take place with inurnment on Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly. There will be a scriptural wake service at 4:30 p.m. followed by a visitation from 5-7 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring Street, Manly.

Judy was born on Dec. 28, 1960, in Mason City, the daughter of Raymond and Mary Aves. She was baptized and confirmed at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly. Judy graduated from North Central Schools in Manly in 1979, and graduated from North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City with a Medical Assistant Degree in 1981.

On April 1, 1989, she married her loving husband Mike Bird, and on Jan. 28, 1996, their son William Michael Bird was born.

Judy was a terrific wife and mother, her home was always filled with Will's friends. Her great love was her family for which she always made time. She was a big supporter of the Minnesota Vikings and rarely missed a game.

Judy worked for Mercy International and Mercy Medical Center for more than 25 years as a medical transcriptionist.

Judy was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a big supporter of many causes. She was a Cub Scout leader, even though she was battling cancer. She and Mike coached Will's Little League baseball team.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Mike and son Will of Manly; her parents, Ray and Mary Aves of Manly; her brother, Marty (Sandy) Aves of Manly; her sister, Amy (Steve) Wendt of Mason City; her maternal grandmother, Mary Smith of Manly; and her mother-in-law, Karen Henaman of Manly. Also left to cherish her memory are five nieces, Allison (Carter) Bair of Wichita, Kan., Joanna (Andrew) Weinberg of New Hartford, Chelsie (Cole) Shook of Manly, Mandie Bird of Cedar Falls, and Shelby Bird of Manly; her brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Tammy Bird of Manly and a very special friend, Marnie Mueller of Manly, as well as other extended family members and friends.

Marjorie E. (Marj) Granzow

BELMOND - Marjorie E. (Marj) Granzow, 91, of Belmond passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.

Graveside services for Marjorie E. (Marj) Granzow will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls. Burial will take place in the cemetery.

Marjorie E., the daughter of Clifford and Hazel Rummel Simpson was born on Good Friday, March 25, 1921, in Iowa Falls. She grew up on a farm near Iowa Falls where she attended school. Marge graduated as valedictorian from the Iowa Falls High School in 1937 and Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls in 1939. Marj also attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. Marjorie taught school in Ferguson, Garwin, Denison, Iowa, and Iowa Falls.

Marjorie was united in marriage to Jack Granzow on May 8, 1944, in Hiawatha, Kan. The couple made their home in Iowa Falls where she taught. Jack and Marge lived in Iowa Falls until 1957 when they moved to Belmond, where they owned and operated the Ford and Mercury auto dealership until Jack's death. Marj also substitute taught in Belmond. She belonged to Clarmond Country Club, Belmond Country Club, Century Club, and American Contract Bridge Club. She was active member in PEO and United Methodist Church in Belmond. Marj served the United Methodist Church in Belmond in several positions, most noted, Rebecca Circle and the UMW. The Belmond Public Library was very dear to Marjorie. She served on the Belmond Public Library Board of Trustees for 37 years. She was instrumental in forming the Belmond Public Library Foundaton Board, on which she also served. More recently, Marj established the building fund. That fund, through successful private donations, increased the size of the library building. The fund's remaining donations established the Talbott Belmond Public Library Endowment which will continue for years to come.

Marjorie is survived by her son, Mike and wife, Ann, of Wellington, Fla.; grandson, Jack Michael Jr. and wife, Tracy, of Rincon, Ga.; granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Slaman and husband, Steve, of Lake Worth, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Jack Alexander Granzow, Nicolas Georges Granzow, Steven Michael Slaman, and Rex Michael Slaman; sister, Lucille I. Kane of Aurora, Colo.; three nephews, one niece, and god-daughter Susan Marjorie Kane of Sacramento, Calif.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Jack in 1977.

Todd was also a "sports nut" and especially enjoyed football, baseball, and cheering for the Cubs.

Elmer A. Arthur
U.S. Air Force   Korean Conflict

Mason City - Elmer A. Arthur, 79, of Mason City, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., Mason City, with Pastors Mark and Cassie Hicks presiding. Military honors will be provided by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Elmer Arnut Arthur was born on June 4, 1933, in Clarion, Iowa, the son of Gaylen Earl and Bertha Alice (Lundy) Arthur. He attended and graduated from Clarion High School amongst the class of 1950 before enlisting in the United States Air Force. Elmer honorably and faithfully served his country during the Korean War where he attended Intelligence School at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado, before being stationed in London, England, where he worked in Air Force Intelligence. On August 6, 1955, he was honorably discharged from the Air Force at Manhattan Air Force Base in New York.

Following his time in the Air Force Elmer attended Luther College as well as the University of Iowa, majoring in history.

On December 29, 1957, Elmer was united in marriage to Phyllis Ann Wigg in Clarion; this union would be blessed with six children.

For over 27 years Elmer served the communities of Mason City, Clinton, Marshalltown and Webster City as a claims specialist with the State of Iowa Employment Services, he served twenty of those years as an assistant manager before retiring in October of 1983.

Elmer had a gift of compassion and was always willing to help others in need to the best of his ability. He had a true sense of caring that was evident to everyone he met.

In his free time Elmer enjoyed fishing, gardening, NASCAR and collecting a little bit of everything! He cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren and could always keep his family entertained with the stories he would tell.

Those grateful in sharing in Elmer's life are his children, Sheryl Arthur, Mason City, Joel Arthur, Mason City, Sandra (Doug) Neuberger, Clear Lake, Jim Arthur, Mason City, and Jeff (Jacquelyn) Arthur, Mason City; and their mother, Phyllis Arthur, Mason City; his grandchildren, Rachelle, Spencer and Elliott Neuberger, Kyle and Andrew Arthur, and Dylan McLaughlin; his siblings, Leo (Carole) Arthur, Clarion, Lelon (Carol) Arthur, Clarion, Gale Arthur, Alexander, and Wayne (Barb) Arthur, Alexander; his sisters-in-law, Maureen Arthur, Donna Arthur, Aileen Arthur and Judy Weir; as well as his extended family and many friends.

U.S. Navy (1951-1955)


ROCHESTER, Minn. -Arlyn Peter "Pete" Boman passed away on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn., after several weeks of ongoing illnesses.

Pete was born Oct. 6, 1931, at the farm home of his parents, Albert and Leonore (Gettis) Boman, in Mount Valley Township, Winnebago County. Pete attended Forest City Schools, graduating with the class of 1950. On March 20, 1951, Pete entered the United States Navy, serving in the Philippines, Guam and Kwajalein as part of the Seabees, a construction battalion, until his discharge on March 7, 1955.

Pete returned to his parents' home that fall to farm with his father while also working as a butcher at Jacob E. Decker and Sons Packing Plant. He worked in the Armour processing plant, later known as Con-Agra, retiring in 1994. After retiring, Pete was hired by Arlyn Rauk and Mark Egesdal to help with planting and harvesting for many years.

Pete's father farmed with horses until Pete's return from the Navy and at his urging bought a tractor. But the love of horses never left either father or son. Pete was given his first pony at age 4. Field work was done with teams of Belgian or Percheron horses which were raised on the farm.

On June 3, 1961, Pete married Elizabeth Fredrickson at First Baptist Church. They lived in their first home in Mason City 11 years. They moved to an acreage northeast of Forest City, residing there for 35 years. In December 2007, the couple moved to a new home right beside the house where he was born.

Pete taught his children so much about life on the farm and lived before them a testimony of faith in a God they could trust. Pete accepted Christ as Savior and was baptized by immersion. He became a member of First Baptist Church serving on the Board of Trustees. Over the years he became increasingly thankful for the way the Lord blessed his life. He loved his family of 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and enjoyed being with them as often as possible.

Family members anxious to join Pete who is now in the presence of the Lord are his wife, Elizabeth; son, Tom (Julie), children Breeanna (Kevin) Erickson and Arlyn Peter Boman II (all of Des Moines), son Theo (Teri) (Webster City), children Elizabeth (Clear Lake), Barb (Matt) Etcher (Lovillia), Peter, Michelle and Samuel (Webster City), daughter, Nancy (Matt) Gjerde (Dunnegan, Mo.), children Sonja (Columbia, Mo.), Mason (U.S. Navy) and Jamison (Dunnegan, Mo.), great- grandchildren, Kinnick and Kloe Etcher, sister, Vinita Cady, nephews David and Steven Cady, brother-in-law, David and his wife, Shirley, and his family, Tim and Karen Fredrickson, Lynnea and Danika, Carol and Doug Tweeten, Ryan, Drew and Luke, Sue and Jeff Port, Josh and Zach, and several cousins.

Greeting him are his parents, brother-in-law Carl Cady and sister-in-law Charlotte Fredrickson.

E.D. "Red" Buntenbach

GARNER - E.D. "Red" Buntenbach, 85, of Garner, Iowa, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. Cataldo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edward Duane "Red" Buntenbach, the son of Edward C. and Martha (Rockow) Buntenbach, was born November 9, 1927, at Klemme. He graduated from Klemme High School in 1945. He continued his education at Upper Iowa University and the University of Iowa. During his time at Iowa he was a member of the Hawkeye football team.

On August 28, 1949, he married Patricia Phillips at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme. They lived in Garner where they raised their family.

Red worked with his father, Ed, in the family cattle business in Garner from his early childhood years until his retirement in 1982. In his later years, Red worked at Diamond Jo Casino in Northwood as a part-time black jack dealer. He enjoyed flying his airplane, golfing, playing cards and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Garner, Garner Rotary Club and a thirty- year member of the Garner Volunteer Fire Department.

Red is survived by his four children, Mary Pat Hastings and her husband, Steven, of Blaine, Minn., Edward P. "Phil" Buntenbach of Des Moines, Brian Buntenbach of Klemme and Andrew Buntenbach and his special friend, Teresa, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Benjamin Hastings, Adam (Rachel) Buntenbach, Eric (Brandi) Buntenbach and Wesley Buntenbach; four great-grandchildren, Naiya and Jaeda Hastings and Gavin and Kennedy Buntenbach; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia, Feb. 18, 2009; and two sisters, Lorraine Rygh and Elaine Keraus.

Clear Lake - J. Steve Shook, 64, of 2307 1st Ave. S., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Open Bible Church, Clear Lake, with Pastor Will Hunsaker officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Saturday at the church. Steve was born June 4, 1948, in Charleston, West Virginia. He graduated from high school in Hayward, Calif. He enlisted in the United States Navy serving in a patrol squadron during the Vietnam War; he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

He married Michele Groth on May 23, 1991, in Turlock, Calif. He worked in Human Resources for Orchard Supply Hardware in California until 2003 when due to health issues he retired and moved to Clear Lake.

He enjoyed riding motorcycles, boating, fishing, backpacking, playing guitar and the last nine years with his involvement in A.A. He was a member of A.A.

He is survived by his wife, Michele Shook, Clear Lake; three sisters, Sue (Fred) B., Toni (Anthony) B. and Tina C. all of California; two stepchildren, Steven Groth, Minnesota, and Dianne (Stephen) Daignault, R.I.; step-grandson, Dylan Daignault, Rhode Island, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law William C. and two sons, John and Michael Shook.

James B. "Jim" Parks

Manly - James B. "Jim" Parks, 67, of Manly died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.

James B. "Jim" Parks, son of William and Teresa (Ballard) Parks was born Feb. 4, 1945, in Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1963 before enlisting in the United States Navy. Jim received an honorable discharge in 1966 and began working for the railroad, being employed by the Great Western, the Chicago Northwestern, and the Union Pacific Railroads for 38 years before retiring in 2005.

On Feb. 24, 1968, he was united in marriage to Vicky Olson of Lakota. To this union, three children were born: Greg, Gary and Julie.

Jim will be missed by his wife of 43 years, Vicky; sons, Greg (Kristie) of Northwood and Gary (Lisa) of Kensett; daughter, Julie (Dan) Pate of Raeford, N.C.; grandchildren, Kole, Jaela, Dylan, Kaylee, James, and Tyler; sister-in-law, Betty (Dewey) Kruger of Northwood along with other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William.

MANLY - Larry G. Romig, 76, of Manly, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Committal services will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City where military honors will be provided by members of the Mason City Veterans Association.

Visitation will be held Sunday evening (Dec. 2, 2012) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, from 4-6 p.m. and one hour prior to Larry's service on Monday.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Larry's name in care of his family.

Larry Gene Romig was born on Dec. 20, 1935, in Mason City, the son of Harry and Elsie (Schmidt) Romig. He attended Mason City High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force where he faithfully served his country until his honorable discharge on Nov. 13, 1957.

Following his time in the Air Force, Larry returned to Mason City where he began working at the Rose Bowl in Mason City. It was while working at the Rose Bowl that Larry would meet his future wife, Joyce Patten.

On Nov. 26, 1977, they would be united in marriage in Sioux Falls, S.D. Together they would share 35 wonderful years.

Larry worked as a production supervisor at IMI Cornelius in Mason City until his retirement. Following his retirement Larry stayed busy around the house by working outside and tinkering around his garage. He prided himself on keeping his 1987 Cutlass Supreme in prime condition and could often times be found outside giving it a quick wash.
In his free time Larry also enjoyed watching NASCAR, listening to country music and dancing. Larry's pride and joy was his family. He cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren and was known to "torment and tease" the grandkids on occasion. He and Joyce would spend many nights together playing Triominoes and other card and board games. And even though he was reluctant to admit it, he liked spending the days with the family cats, Charlie and Rosie.

Those grateful in sharing in Larry's life are his wife, Joyce, Manly; his daughters, Tawnya (Tad) Foster, Lakewood, Colo., Teresa (Doug) Hershey, Mason City, Shelly Kirk and Michael Mathis, Thompson, Marjorie (Paul) Quintero, Mason City, Susan (Todd) Fingalsen, Nora Springs, and Carrie Davis, Mason City; his grandchildren, Finn Foster, Amanda Catlett, Steven Catlett, Ryan Hershey, Chris (Cy) Kirk, Shawn Kirk, Joshua (Kiersten) Kirk, Jessica Kirk and her fiancé, Mike, Natalie Quintero, Rob Quintero, Joey Quintero, Lizzy Quintero, Mitchell Fingalsen, Maxwell Fingalsen, Haley Davis, and Jason Davis, Jr.; his great grandson, Cooper Kirk; his sister in law, Jean (Wayne) Roberts, his brother in law, Robert (Sue) Patten; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Shirley Cooper, Jerry Romig, Gary Romig, and Roger Romig.

Frances Sophia Schafer

Greene - Funeral services for Frances S. Schafer, 93, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Frances S. O'Brien was born Feb. 6, 1919, at home in rural Vilmar, Butler County, Iowa, a daughter of George and Dora (Drogemuller) O'Brien and died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Liebe Care Center in Greene. She received her education in public schools graduating from Greene High School . She earned her teaching certificate and taught in country schools, east of Greene, from 1937-1946.

Frances was united in marriage to Ivan D. Schafer on March 21, 1943, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. This union was blessed with five children. Frances was devoted to raising her children as she worked side by side with Ivan caring for the family farm.

Frances was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Vilmar Feb. 11, 1919. She was confirmed June 4, 1933, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene and has remained a faithful member since. Frances was an avid reader that read her Bible from cover to cover many times. She taught Sunday school, belonged to the women's circle and quilted.
She enjoyed gardening, flowers, watching wild birds, observing the night sky, working with little children, sewing and quilting. Frances was a wonderful cook who always had dozens of cookies stored in ice cream pails to share with her family when they visited.

Living family members include her children: Donn (Cherie) Schafer, Charles City, Phillip (Kathy) Schafer, Charles City, James (Linda) Schafer, Greene, Joan (Don) Gordon, Creston; daughter-in-law Christine (her husband, Mark) Jellum, Osage; 13 grandchildren: Andrew (Jennifer) Schafer, Matthew (Jennifer) Schafer, Trula Schafer, Jeffery (K.T.) Schafer, Joshua (Kristina) Schafer, Amy Valladares, Brian (Jodi) Schafer, Todd Schafer, Holly Schafer, Chad Schafer, Lisa (John) Carpenter, Dana Gordon, Will Gordon; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Fontell (Joe) Deines, Cordova, Ill., Georgeann (Lloyd) Kingery, Royal, Ill.; one brother: John (Diane) O'Brien, Rockford, Ill.; many nieces and nephews.

Frances is preceded in death by her husband Ivan in 1992, her son, Gary, her parents, sister, Alberta (James) Dolan.
